La Fuerza del Destino #43 Wed 10/05/11 Everyone attempts to straighten things out, but there are still kinks in the road

Lucia brings Alex to the hospital to visit Ivan, who is happy to see him. They talk about Bruno.
Nuevo

Hospital Reception Room:  Camilo comes in to visit Ivan, running into Lucia, Alex, and Benito.

Ivan's Room:  Ivan and Camilo talk about Lucia.  Camilo tries to tell Ivan that if he reconciles with Lucia just because he's hot for her it's going to go badly.  Ivan confronts Camilo about possibly having the hots for Lucia himself.  Camilo hotly denies it and exits, but comes back immediately and apologises.

Café:  Saul and Carmen makes pigs of themselves over the food he can now afford because JJ took him back.  He gives her some money (a single banknote) with a promise of more and she reminds him that her information is worth a lot.  Maldita sea.

Casa Curiel:  The housekeeper tells Gerardo she doesn't know where Lucia is.
Carlota:  Gerardo, what a surprise!
Gerry:   How are you, Carlota?  I'm looking for Lucia.  Do you know where she went?
Carlota:   She took Alex to see Ivan.
Gerry:  You don't say.
Carlota:  Does that bother you?
Gerry:  No.  Although it hurts, it was inevitable.  I trust Lucia not to tell Alex he is of Ivan's flesh.  [Obviously he doesn't realize the boy overheard a lot of major stuff about this.]
Carlota:  Yes, but you need to control your sister-in-law.  I understand she is incapable of allowing Alex to leave her side, and this is not good.
Gerry:  Yes, I know.  And Lucrezia?
Carlota:  You know she likes to go to the Benevelents' Association to look good in front of strangers.  She's donating clothing and food to victims of the last hurricane.
Gerry (incredulous):   So she has a heart?
Carlota: Dear God, you know her just as well as I do!  She does this so people will think she is charitable and generous.

Benevolents' Association, outdoors:  Lucrezia is playing Lady Bountiful, donating clothes to charity while pretending to be sincere.  Margarita praises her, but Olga says something about how if only her daughters were there to help.  Lucrazia talks about how Lucia studies psychology to help children.  But Olga is only to a metiche who knows how other tenants in MP's building are talking about how mala she is.  Esther Mondragon is at the edge of this scene.
Olga:  But the other one, Maripaz es una fechita. [?]  Well, it's true, isn't it?
Lucrazia:  I don't know what you're referring to.  What things do you know about my daughter?
Olga:  None, but I know other tenants from her building who say she gets going from bad to worse.    She gives parties till all hours of the night, scandalous stuff, and stuff that...well, I don't know what to say to you.
Esther:  [didn't get this all because the music was loud]  You have to talk to her about the ugly things people are saying.
Lucrazia:  Don't tell me any more.  I've tried talking to her but she doesn't listen to me.  It gives me much anguish.
Esther:  I understand problems at home.  I have some horrible ones.
Olga:  What is it?  What happened?
Esther:  My husband.  The other day he got very ill.  The doctor says it could be leukemia.  If he isn't careful he will be worse than ever before.
Lucrazia:  Juan Jaime ill?  I don't believe it.  He always seemed so strong.
Esther:  Well, apparently not.  I'm praying to God he doesn't get worse because it will cause a destruction in the family.
[Actually, it would be the best thing to happen to the Mondragons.  Better than the gossip fest Olga will invite the rest of Alamos to as soon as this event is over.]
Commercial Break that leads with a promo for Protagonistas.which starts next week and for tomorrow's hot episode of Mujeres Asesinas with Asesina Belinda and Victim William Levy.  That's the best episode yet this season, but when are we getting new ones?

Casa Curiel:  Alex tells Gerry about meeting Bruno, and hugs Carlota while Lucia tells her dad they visited Ivan.

Casa Galvan:  Camilo comes home talking about Ivan's hospitalization and they all give Carmen the hell she deserves about what she did to Bruno.  She acts like an entitled brat.
Antolin:  I don't get it.  How is it in a town this careful there are poisonous snakes?  Did it get near the house [?]
Camilo (nodding toward Carmen):  Ask this one.
Carmen:  It wasn't my fault that the dog got out.
Camilo:  And do you know why Ivan went looking for Bruno?
Carmen:  That damned old man fired me because of this arronoso [?] just as I was about to quit [?]
Aracelia:  Carmen, you left the door open.
Antolin: How could you let something like this happen?  Don't you realize Ivan could have died?
Carmen:  How could I know?
Camilo:  Of course!  You do these stupid things; you never know anything.
Carmen:  Shut up!
Camilo:  No. you will shut up!
Aracelia:  Stop this argument!
Carmen:  You're always against me and you never do anything for me.  No I'm out of work and how am I going to support my daughter?
Camilo:  Stop playing the victim.  I maintain this house, you, and your daughter, too.
Carmen:  Yes, but you don't buy me clothes.
Camilo:  From this day forward you will buy nothing.  You will leave this house and support yourself and your daughter.
Carmen:  You are nobody to give me orders.
Antolin (shouting):  Camilo is right.  No doubt you'll find another guy and have another baby.
Carmen gets up in a snit and leaves the table like the petulant child she is.  Aracelia has been observing her sons through the last of this.

Hospital Room:  Ivan tells Tony about Lucia and Alex's visit and his conversation with Camilo.  Tony is disappointed that Ivan and Lucia aren't firmly reconciled.

Casa Galvan:  Aracelia despairs of Carmen.
Antolin:  She should find a husband.
Camilo:  To begin with, nobody will want a cualquiera.
Aracelia:  It worries me a lot.
Camilo:  Ja, mamacita, be calm.
Antolin:  Don't get so upset.
Aracelia (crying): Yes, it's true.  She can't stay here in this house.  She needs to look for another job, then... I don't know.  Why isn't she satisfied with her life?
Antolin:  But she lacks for nothing.  Ademas, where is the money coming from?  Mama, do you know who Lichita's father is?
Aracelia:  I don't know.
Antolin:  Because if you tell me we can force the guy to marry her and give Lichita a name.
Aracelia:  Antolin, you will not interfere.  (turning to Camilo)  And you won't either.  (She gets up from the table).

Casa Curiel:  Lucrazia speaks of MP's shameful rep.
Lucrazia:  You don't know the anger and the shame I feel.
Carlota:  Neither should this come as a surprise to you.
Lucrazia:  She has these shameful parties that bother the neighbors.
Lucia:  But, Mama, people exaggerate.
Lucrazia:  Suppose they do exaggerate, but gossip spreads and your sister has a bad reputation.
Carlota:  And this just occurred to you?
Lucrazia:  And are we sitting around with crossed arms about this?  She's a Lomieli-Curiel, just like us.
Carlota:  Since you repeat she is a Lomieli-Curiel.  I'm annoyed because it doesn't matter if she is a      Perez or Sanchez.  What is important is that Maripaz is a brazen hussy, [descocada], a madwoman without morals or decency.
Lucrazia:  Very well, I agree with you.  What do you suggest we do?  Are we to allow our names to be in everyone's mouths?
Carlota:  Stop talking like that.  We've had enough shameful things in this family.
Lucia:  Why don't we talk to Maripaz and get her into rehab?
Lucrazia:  So the whole world knows about it?
Carlota:  At times I just want to [?]
Lucia:  We could say she took a vacation.  I could go with her because I don't have work... or classes.
Carlota:  What's going to happen with Ivan and Alex?
Lucia:  Abue, we'll have to make a decision.
Carlota:  The decision has been made.
Lucrazia:  What decision is that?
Carlota:   I'm not going to tell you.  (Gets up and leaves the room)
Lucrazia:  Now I know where your sister's madness comes from.  Your grandmother.  She's like a goat [cabra].
You wish, loca who has the hots for Camilo.

Casa Galvan, Outside:  Antolin and Camilo review what just went down.  They speculate on who could be the jerk who knocked up their sister.  When Camilo asks whether Antolin has a child anywhere he answers that he's always been careful about that.  The conversation turns to Ivan, Alex, and the issues with Carolina.  Antolin won't propose to Carolina not because she's blind but because of his lifestyle.  That she doesn't deserve a desgraciado like him.

Casa Curiel:
Lucrazia:  Daughter, if you marry Ivan tell him you want to live in the US and take Maripaz with you.
Lucia:  Don't start this, Mother.  (She gets up and leaves.)
Lucrazia:  You don't give a damn about this family's reputation.  You're all ingrates!
The phone rings.
Lucrazia:  Who is calling at this hour?  (answers)  Bueno.
JJ:  Lucrazia?
Lucrazia:  Juan Jaime, I was just thinking about you.  Esther said you were ill.
JJ:  My wife always exaggerates.  A little problem, but nothing of importance.
Lucrazia (grinning):  You don't know how happy that makes me.
JJ:  Thanks.  I need to talk to you.
Lucrazia:  Of course.  About what?
JJ:  It's better if we talk in person, mi reina.
Lucrazia:  As you wish.
JJ:  If it's good with you, let's do it tomorrow.
Lucrazia:  Where?  In your office?
JJ:  No, no.  In a restaurant, as it must.  Yes, I have a diet but a glass of wine won't hurt me.
Lucrazia:  That pleases me.  Where?  Good, I agree.  It will be a pleasure to see you.
JJ:  For me, too.  Mi reina.
Lurazia:  Juan Jaime.  (hangs up)  Juan Jaime will be my salvation.
[Editorial comment:  I dearly hope we don't have to suffer through any sex scenes with these two.  It would have the same Ick Factor as the ones in the original Mujeres Asesinas.]

Casa Lomieli:  Alex wants a dog of his own (can you blame him?) and Carolina is going on again about keeping the truth from Alex.

Alex:  Tia! Tia!  I just met this fabulous dog.  Dad, can we get a dog?
Gerry:  This house is small; a dog wouldn't be comfortable.  But when you visit Lucia you can play with Bruno.
Carolina:  Who is Bruno?
Gerry:  Ivan's dog.
Alex:  But I want my own dog.
Gerry:  We'll see, we'll see.  Now go wash your hands for dinner.  (Alex exits)
Carolina (clearly annoyed):  Lucia took him to Ivan's house?
Gerry:  Yes.
Carolina:    And so you want to say that this is [?]
Gerry:  Carolina, I don't want to have the same argument.  I ask you – I'm begging you -- don't go telling Alex bad things about Ivan or I might have to take other measures.
Carolina:  Like what?  You going to try to shut me up?
Gerry:  No.  I'm going to ask Lucia to have Alex stay at her place for a few days while we settle this matter.
Carolina:  Don't you try that.
Gerry is impactado, but at least this is the first sensible thing he's said in the past 20 episodes.

Casa Curiel:  Camilo arrives to talk about Ivan.
Camilo:  I've just come from Ivan's house
Lucia:  He's OK?
Camilo:  Yes.  I had a talk with him yesterday.
Lucia:  Have a seat.  (they sit down)
Camilo:  I don't have much to say.  He says he loves you and I believe him but...
Lucia:  .He can't forget...
Camilo:  It's not to forget, it's to understand.  I know you have a solid family, but he didn't.  At least since his mother died.
Lucia:  But he has Señor Anthony.
Camilo:  Yes. I'm sure he would give his life for him, but I'm referring to someone of his blood.  I don't want to tell you he won't reconcile with you because love is also a very strong tie, but I'm going to tell you exactly what I told him.  If after seeing Alex over a few months and he doesn't react as you want him to, he'll blame you.  He'll be annoyed with the situation and you'll both be very unhappy.
Lucia:  Yes.  You're right.
Camilo:  I could be wrong, of course.  It could be that Alex will start loving his father and there won't be a problem.  It would be great between you.
Lucia:  Thanks, Camilo.  Thanks for your sincerity and for being a good friend.  I love you (te quiero) very much.
She hugs him, but I am wondering whether he isn't up to something here since he knows about Carolina's Poison Pills.
Commercial Break

McGuire Home Office:  Ivan is back in the saddle (as in office chair), but appears to be tired.
Tony:  Need anything?
Ivan:  No, Papa, everything is good.  Thanks.
Tony:  I have to do stuff in the office.
Ivan (starting to get up):
Tony:  No, no, no, no.  Your first day out of the hospital you need to rest.  You think because I'm old I'm [murradas?]
Ivan:  No, no! Of course not.
Tony:  You need to be calm.  I'm going to tell Benito to stand by if you need anything.
He exits and Ivan makes a phone call.
Ivan:  Lucia?
Lucia: How are you?
Ivan:  Content.  I'm home now.
Lucia:  Good.  That pleases me.
Ivan:  I want to thank you again for coming to the hospital yesterday and for bringing my son.
Lucia:  Well, he was a little distrustful at the beginning but he's a good an intelligent boy.  Like his father.
Ivan:  I don't believe you can see me as that smart. [brief pause]  I so want to see you.  I really do.  Can I come to your house?
Lucia:  But you're just out of the hospital!
Ivan:  Therefore, can you come over?
Lucia:   Of course!
Ivan:  When?
Lucia:  If you want, right now!
Ivan:  Of course I'd want that.
As he ends the call Ivan has a dream sequence about getting it on with Lucia near a large fan surrounded by flying doves.  He must have seen Juan and Sofia in Fuego en la Sangre on Univision when he was in los Estado Unidos.  He's embellished this by having them dressed in white, as though their wedding was earlier that day.  They start undressing and lay down on red and white satin sheets on the floor.

Park Bench:  Carlota is nicely dressed and wearing her pearls.  This looks like an AARP ad.
Tony:  I knew sooner or later we'd get back to this.  Maripaz is a young, pretty girl living alone.  It's normal for her to have parties.
Carlota:  I agree with you, but this isn't Los Angeles.  This is a provincial town and we all know the people would whisper bad things about her.  It doesn't matter to me that much; I'm resigned to it.  But I hurt for her.  Good or bad she is my granddaughter.  Tony, I'm afraid she could end up in a bad way.  I don't know... drunk, lost, addicted to drugs.
Tony:  I understand, Carlota.   Let's get serious.  What should we do?  Maripaz has no sense [?]
Carlota:  Yes, but it could upset her if you took away the apartment or the allowance.
Tony:  Of course I could do that.  But I did this for you.  For your good name.
Carlota:  Good name?  At this late date [estas alturas] my “good name” isn't important to me.
Tony:  Neither for your daughter, Lucrezia?
Carlota:  I don't think Maripaz is foolish enough to put her neck in the noose [soga].  A scandal would hurt her, too.
Tony:  I don't know.  Young people think very differently.  In todos modos I will take care of this.  I will talk to her.
Carlota:  Tony, you don't know how grateful I am.  You're an angel from heaven helping us.
Tony (laughing):  How can you think that.  At most destiny is reserved.

Iglesia:  Alex, Carolina, and Rosa are taking a walk.  When Carolina asks whether Alex wants to play football with Antolin, he says he'd rather play with Bruno and Ivan told him it was OK.  Carolina is not pleased about this.  She tells the maid to take him home and they will buy him a toy later.  [I am really getting to hate this pathetic creature.]  Rosa runs after Alex.  Carolina turns back and reenters the church.

Park Bench:
Tony:  You know how many years I've lived alone?  I had friends, and dogs.  But when I met Ivan I found a son.   A son.  Since we've been here I found a family.  Problems, difficulties, yes, but a family.  And an angel.  You.
Carlota (covering her face and gently laughing):  Ayeee!  I'm no angel.  [She must be a Mae West fan.]
Tony:  For me you are.
Carlota:  Ay, Tony,
Tony:  And how about the trip to the beach?
Carlota:  Do you still want to do that after all these problems with Alex?
Tony:  Lucia can convince him.  He's a child.  While Carolina may have put lies in his head he won't be able to resist a good trip, a good toy.  Near the place Ivan rented is an amusement park with rides and ..an aquarium.  With dolphins, sharks, manta rays...
Carlota:  He will love that!
Tony:  Of course he will!
Carlota has a 1000 watt smile at this.

Iglesia:  Carolina kneels and Antolin enters.  After telling him in her usual play-the-victim style that Lucia and Ivan are plotting something, he hands her a big wad of cash [Of course, we're wondering where it came from]..  He explains it's so she can see a doctor about an operation that will enable her to see again.  She responds that it isn't important.  He reminds her about seeing trees, flowers, etc.    She still resists.   She is really playing her disability for everything she can get out of it.  Finally she tells him he is a good guy.   He tells her yes, but he's taking the risk that when she sees him she may not like what she sees.  That she will look at the face of the devil and never want to see him again.  She tells him she can see his soul and he asks how she can see something black.  As she smiles he turns away.
[The closeup of Antolin made me think of the Corleones in The Godfather.  Made me wonder whether he's a lost son of that family.]
Commercial Break

Casa McGuire:  Benito escorts Lucia to Ivan's office.  Ivan is looking better than in the last scene in the office.  Benito leaves them alone.  They kiss across the desk.  Reconciliation?  Perhaps.

Merry Piece's Den of Iniquity:  Tony arrives for a The Serious Conversation.  She greets him in what looks like a tunic top that needs tights at the very least.
MP:  Don Anthony, come on in, please.
Tony:  Thanks, Maripaz.  Forgive the bother, but I need to talk to you.  Can we sit down?
MP:  Of course, come in.  (They do.  Tony has to pick something up off the couch so he can sit and Maripaz takes up most of the couch with her legs stretched out.  She must have seen Basic Instinct)  And what can I do for you?
Tony:  I've come here because your family is very worried about your lifestyle.
MP:  Really?
Tony:  If you recall, my intention in giving you this apartment is to avoid a scandal to protect the good name of your family.  Not for you to have parties that result in people talking against you.
MP:  Excuse me, Don Anthony, but since I don't let my family dictate my life, I won't let you either.
Tony:  I'm not trying to, but advising that you do so healthily, and above all with discretion.
MP:  I am of age and I will do what I feel like [antojar]
Tony:  You seem to have forgotten who is paying for this apartment.  Just as I have been generous, I can take it all away.
MP (grinning, as in no puede creer):  To stop buying my silence?
Tony:  Not precisely that.  I said I was protecting the good name of your family.
MP:  As you wish.  I know many men would pay for the privilege of being my lover?
Tony:  So it appears.  You have one month to think about it.  After which I will stop paying the rent and stop your allowance.  Think about it. (gets up and puts on his hat)  Have a good day. (He walks out.  Merry Piece's face isn't so merry anymore.  She doesn't bother to get up to escort him out.)
MP:  Damned old man!
Casa McGuire:  Lucia and Ivan talk about Alex.  She understands how he feels and feels guilty about what her family has done.  He decides to give up on Alex considering the consequences of disclosure.  Ivan is angry that Carolina has been poisoning the boy's soul about him but doesn't want to cause Alex any more pain.  Lucia still feels that despite all this he should still fight for Alex.
Obviously neither of them knows that Alex overheard most of this when eavesdropping on Gerry and Carolina.

Street:  Tony calls Carlota to tell her about his meeting with MP.
Tony:  Carlota, I'm calling to tell you that my conversation with Maripaz did nothing.
Carlota:  Nothing is important to that girl.  I think it's better you should take away the apartment and the allowance.
Tony:  I threatened to do so, but it seemed unimportant to her.
Carlota:  Let's see how important it is when she has nothing to eat.
Tony:  I gave her some time to think about it.
Carlota:  I don't think that will do any good, Tony.  She is too stubborn and you know what?  This may not be the way to do it.

Casa Lomieli:  Alex confronts Carolina about what he overheard.
Alex:  Why did dad say I'm his grandson?
Carolina (impactada, like the music):   Where did you hear this?
Alex:  The other day you were talking and he said I was his grandson.
Carolina:  Look, Alex, antes que nada you aren't supposed to listen to other people's conversations.  And your heard badly.
Alex:  I didn't hear badly.
Carolina:  Of course you did.  I don't remember talking about this.  Are you sure we weren't talking about something else?
Alex:  I heard stuff I didn't understand and that I didn't like.
Carolina:  Sit down with me, son.  Sometimes adults talk about things that children don't understand.
Alex:  You were saying that Ivan is evil and was going to steal me.  Lucia says this isn't true and Antolin also.  My dad, too.  Therefore whom do I believe?
Carolina (starting to get uneasy):  I don't know.  At best I was mistaken.  Sometimes I feel things that aren't right.
Alex:  Therefore Ivan isn't bad.
Carolina:  I don't know, mi amor.
Alex:  But he told me I could play with Bruno whenever I want to.  That can't be bad.
Carolina:  Maybe that's to look good in front of Lucia.  I don't know.
Alex:  So you still think Ivan is bad?
Carolina (getting real uneasy):  I said I don't know.
Alex:  He said I'm his grandson, so that means he is my grandpa.
Carolina:  You know what, Alex?  I'm getting a headache so I can't talk well.  We'll talk later, yes?  (She gets up and leaves the room)
Alex:  I don't understand.  (collapses back on the couch in frustration)
La cobarde goes into her room and has a crying fit before calling Antolin about the eye specialist.  He's already on the way there.

Eye Specialst's Office:  Antolin talks to the doctor about Carolina, explaining that she sometimes sees shadows.  He tells him he needs to examine her.

Casa MdGuire:  Tony almost sounds like JJ as chews Ivan out for weakening in the battle for Lucia and Alex.  He hopes that it's the medications Ivan has had to take for the snakebite.  They can't leave for the trip until they complete a business deal that's worth a lot of money.  The money from that deal isn't important except that money is for making the people you love happy.  He didn't work his butt off for ten years for failure.  Ivan was a hard worker for ten years, not a silver-spoon son, which Tony doesn't want.  He tells him he wants to see him energetic and alert again or else he's fired!
Commercial Break starting with a promo for tonight's La Rosa de Guadalupe

Outdoor Restaurant:  Lucrazia arrives to meet JJ
JJ:  Lucrezia, you are always so beautiful.
Lucrazia:  Thanks, you look well, too.
JJ:  Would you like something to drink?
Lucrazia:  Water, please.  You look better than I thought.  I was upset when Esther said it was serious.
JJ:  You know her; she always exaggerates.
Lucrazia:  And that's good because I have to ask you a favor.  It's about Maripaz.  She's out of control.  She's always partying and I'm afraid she's becoming an alcoholic.
JJ:  I understand your worry.  What can I do?
Lucrazia:  I feel that she needs a father figure and an authoritative man like yourself can convince her...
JJ:  Lucrezia, Maripaz is a weed.  [mala hierba]  If I couldn't convince her to not divorce David, how do you expect me to be effective about this?  No, mi reina.  There are women who born with whores' souls.
Lucrazia:  Juan Jaime!  How can you say that?  She's my daughter.
JJ:  It's not your fault, it's hers.
Lucrazia:  You aren't going to help me?
JJ:  I could, but I don't think it will help.  I'm sure she will slam the door on my nose.

Casa McGuire, Office:
Camilo:  Did you fight with Señor Anthony?
Ivan:  You know what's up.  In a few words, he called me a coward.
Camilo:  We all have our bad days, no?
Ivan:  And you?  What's going on?
Camilo:  The workers are operating below potential and that's not good.  We're also needing more product volume.
Ivan:  The fruit from Gonzales?
Camilo:  That will be ready for harvest [cosecha] in a week.
Ivan:  And your ranch?  How does it go?
Camilo:  I've found water.  And with water I'll have [?]
Ivan:  Camilo, congratulations!
Camilo:  Ivan, why did you give me this land?
Ivan:  Well, first because I didn't need them.  Second, because I owe a lot to your family and third because I didn't want anything to do with the Curiels.
Camilo:  And Lucia?

Den of Iniquity:  The maid informs Merry Piece she's prepared vegetable soup.  Not-so-Merry Piece dismisses her as she calls Antolin to get him to come over.  She tells him about Tony's threat.

Restaurant:  JJ and Lucrazia talk about water and their lands.
Lucrazia:    How much will you pay me?
JJ:  Nothing.
Lucrazia:  Then forget it.
JJ:  Ivan and Maripaz have a son, don't they?  (Lucrezia looks surprised).  Oh, I know all about it.  And if you don't want a reporter blabbing this all over you'll give me the water for free.
Lucrazia:  You're a “respectable” man, no?  And what will people say when they know that you had it off with a servant girl that resulted in a son and that son is the famous Ivan McGuire?
JJ:  It's not the same thing for a man to have a bastard son here as for a society girl-child to become pregnant by the son of a servant.
Lucrazia (wipes her mouth and gets up):  You are a pig!
She grabs her purse and leaves.  We are spared a sex scene with them for at least the next five episodes.

Den of Iniquity:  Merry Piece pours Antolin a drink.
Antolin:  I understand but you haven't explained why he would take away the apartment.
Maripaz:  It's a family matter.
Antolin:  Yes, I know, but if you don't explain, how can I help you?
Maripaz:  The only thing I want is for you to find me a lover.  Young, rich, and handsome, who will support me.
Antolin:  That's not going to be easy.
Maripaz:  Why not?  Am I ugly? (She pulls a Sharon Stone on Antolin, per no sirve para nada)
Antolin:  No, but I want to know what's behind this.
Maripaz:  Stuff I can never tell anyone.
Antolin:  When have I betrayed you?  Therefore...
Maripaz:  You really won't tell anyone?
Antolin:  Of course not.  I'm a man of my word.
Maripaz:  Very well.  Señor Tony is in love with my grandmother and wants to protect her.  It's that my grandmother was pregnant by another man when she was married and my mother is not the daughter of Teodoro Curiel.
Antolin:  Such a fuss over that?
Maripaz:  You're a pelado to whom this doesn't matter, but to those of us in high society it's very important.
Antolin:  If only they knew what a little whore you are.  (She throws her drink in his face, but Antolin keeps his cool)
Maripaz:  I am not a whore!
Avances:  Capitulo Estremecedor!
Alex knows!
Maripaz runs someone down with her car and Antolin is nearby taking a picture with his cell phone camera!

Vocabulary:
cosecha   harvest
delfin   dolphin
descocada   brazen, cheeky
estas alturas   late date
fechita   ????
mala hierba   weed
mantarayito  manta ray
pelado   insolent person
soga   (hangman's) noose

Augie strangles Areli when she tells him she was the one that ruined his wine/grapes., When lazaro comes to her rescue Augie takes his exit… She wants Lazaro to stay with her. She tells him it was her that ruined Augie’s grape reserve. Lazaro is impactado.

Gina/Jero talking at hospital… Gina asks Jero if the fact that Nata’s mother was the one that murdered Rafa would be an impediment for him to get back with Nata. He confesses that he can’t deny that the fact that Nata is the daughter of a murderer concerns him. Nata hears this and thinks that always something comes up that separates them… Nata leaves before she can hear Jero tell Gina that despite that, he loves her and, like Matt said, it’s a flame that not even the big blue sea can put out..

At Connie’s, doctor and Hono are in awe of how fast Connie is recuperating. Smiles all around.

At the prison nut house, in doctor’s office, Blanca is teasing him with ‘what I will let you do to me’ (MAJOR BARF!!) Blanca calls Hono again using the phone in the doctor’s office… Hono gets real mad at her. When he hangs up he calls Matt to tell police Manriquez and find out where that phone is.

At Ensenada church Carlos and Mati are waiting for the ‘prenup classes’ from padre Severino but he is a no show… they decide to go look for him.
Padre Severino just got what Marina is guessing is the flu, he will have to stay in bed for a few days.

Areli/Laz and Mati/Carlos are talking to Areli, she asks Carlos if he thinks its ok for her to stay at La Bonita for a while until she leaves town. Carlos sure Jero won’t mind.… They meet up with Padre Seve out in town… he tells they he is sick and will have to postpone his activities (including their wedding). Mati begins to think it is her curse again that is spreading to others.

Augie is having another hissy fit by his ruined grape tanks… yells at Ezeq to leave. He takes it on the poor barrels with a sledgehammer…

Adri/Matt at office. Adri tells Matt she made her decision. Matt guesses wrong and says she is there to tell him she chose Chema. Nope, she chose him but she wants to speak to Chema and tell him personally before she and Matt go public as a couple again. Matt asks her not to play with him, then he says you might want to wait but I don’t … he kisses her and they agree that they will keep their ‘recon’ a secret until she talks to Chema.

Nata prays at chapel… its not easy to feel you are the daughter of a murderer. My mom hurt so many folks… She is nuts/sick. What if I carry the ‘genes’ of ‘crime’? and pass them to my children? (OH PLEEEEEZZZEEE!! SPARE MEEEE!!)
Gonzo visits Berta at her hosp room.. they get mellow (I wonder if these two ever went to a father daughter night at her school…). She is scared, thanks God she has him for a dad. She regrets all the harm she had done. HE is glad she is ok, life gives you 2nd chances … and 3rd… and 4th… and… Berta says she will make good use of this one. She will change.. honest… HE says I hope so.

Nata still at chapel, tells God U know I love Jero more today than ever.. (remembers first stumble at airport, then first kiss outside la mentirosa) For better or worse, it was a great love story. Too bad all the troubles did not let us be happy together.

Gonzo leaves Berta alone and she tells herself she will keep away from her mom, will even change her surname to Gamba (Roberto’s surname), will take off Fina’s surname Alvarez. ‘I hate you’

Gina/Jero talk again, she cares about both Nata and Berta. Wants them to interact as sisters and will provide them a loving environment they never had with Fina. But am afraid of how they will react to the news. (well, one will find out she is NOT the daughter of a murderer … so it might not be so bad after all LOL)

Augie calls Ezeq back and orders him to kill Areli… Eze freezes… Augie senses Ezeq is not quite willing and ready to follow orders. Ezeq hessitates but ends up saying he’ll do it. (I am pretty sure he is lying)

Gonzo comes out of Berta’s room and meets with Gina/Jero… Jero wishes Berta will get well and change for the better with the experience. Gonzo thanks Jero, Jero says only one to blame will pay soon. Gina asks them both to go with her tomorrow to get the DNA test results (Ok, they must have tickets to the Maury Povich show?? Jero, YOU ARE the father! .. oh wait… I got that wrong… Gina, YOU ARE the mother!)
Gina looks visibly nervous, tells Gonzo she wants Berta to come live with her for a while, she will be safe and calm there. They kiss, he is happily shocked… wants more LOL.

Jero calls Nata, she is leaving the hospital curb, he offers to take her to Connie’s but she wants to go alone… thank you for everything… Jero is confused at her new attitude.

At La Bonita Kari watches as Lazaro is serving Areli as if he were her watch dog. Areli tells them (with Mati and Carlos) that Lazaro had saved her before when she was about to jump into oblivion. He is her guardian angel, they say how an animal Augie is, Carlos brings up Alvaro but then freezes at half sentence. Areli tells them Augie would do anything to get what he wants. Kari tells them Augie was kissing Nata when she was drugged when she had the accident. They are all shocked. Mati is mad she never told them before. Mati goes with her hissy fit to the kitchen to tell Manuela about Areli and Lazaro. All about her curse and if she does not marry Carlos she will end up a nun. (ok tantrum cursed girl… go take a hike… maybe some exercise will get you tired of yourself)

Nata visits Adri and tells her ‘I need you my friend’… (so its Nata’s turn for the bad day)

Marina calls Jero, notices he is worried, she asks him to tell her how things are with Nata. Jero tells her he came to tell Nata about her mother being his brother’s murderer. Marina thinks this will widen the abbyss that separates Jero and Nata. Jero stays quiet so she senses something has changed. But Jero won’t tell her over phone. He wants to wait until he returns and then they will talk. Marina is already guessing what he will say…

Fina alone in her hotel room is watching TV.. watches as a news break comes up announcing she is wanted for murdering Rafa Gutierrez. And the whole MR scandal.
I have to hide. (NO KIDDIN!!)

Blanca watches same news cast ‘poor Fina MR’. But then gets a creepy smile/smirk on.

At La Bonita, Areli keeps getting lots of attention. Lazaro says he doubts Augie will dare come get her here. Carlos tells her she is brave. She says she wanted to hurt Augie where he would feel it. Carlos says yup, THAT you did alright (get his attention).

Kari is visiting Alfonsina, she is also mad (a la Mati) about Areli all around Lazaro. Alfonsina says you have to go there and show face, make yourself noticed.

Gonzo/Hono/Matt/Adri at office are celebrating how well it has gone for the company in last few days, thanks to the Jero loan. Gonzo says there is a convention coming up. He can’t get away from Gina and Hono can’t from Connie so they send Matt/Adri to go to the convention to represent the new blood of MR INC. (WOW, Matt !! Whatever you are wearing, make them your lucky tie and shirt, and eat the same breakfast, you are FINALLY getting lucky, man after so many short ends of the stick!)

Once settled at her house, Gina is caring very nicely for Berta. Berta says I never would have believed you would be this nice to me after I treated you so bad. Will u forgive me? Gina says that’s in the past. Berta says her mom never acted like this with her. She wishes she had a mom like Gina.

Nata is leaving Connie’s house, but she sits with Connie for a min. Connie notices she is sad… I love you / me too. Jero loves you, value him. Nata cries and agrees then leaves.

Marina arrives at Jero’s… he is surprised she is there. She wants the truth from him. He takes a deep breath before dropping the bomb… My heart, my body and my soul want to be with Nata
(end of ep)

Prev: It all leads to Jero/Nata reconciliation (we see Marina upset leaving, but I have a feeling she is leaving Jero’s apt…) but a pregnancy might change everything… (oh no! Could Nata be preggers but Jero will deny the paternity based on assumption that she and Augie had a powaw?)

Una Familia Con Suerte #2 Wed 10/5/11 In which Fernanda does not plunge to her death and instead enjoys comida tipica.

  • Well of course we were all on the edge of our seats the last 23 hours wondering whether Fernanda would really slip and fall to her death.

Wow, she didn't! Pancho's friend Chacho is uselessly glued to the sidewalk and many other onlookers are likewise uselessly stationary, Pancho manages to haul the Doña back up on the bridge by himself. He thanks God for not making him an orphan by letting his newly adopted mother fall to her death. Fernanda and Pancho hug and are very tender (great chemistry, those two).
  • As the three drive away from the scene in his truck ("la burra," the female donkey) Pancho plans to give her crispy pig skin junk food to liven her up. He invites her back to his casa popular, where all are welcome: there will be hot chicken soup for her, and mole!

She's in shock and stupidly repeats everything he says ("like a parakeet" complains Chacho). He points out for her sake (and ours) all his kids, whose photos are up over the dashboard. Oldest, Pepe, next, Ana (the squirt with the accordion), next Lupita, lastly Temo. He enthuses about his happy family and says "we're lucky, we love each other. Nobody should be alone." "I'm alone," she moans. "From now on, you have me," he enthuses further.

  • Vicente's house: he asks his dog: "Who do you love?" He and his nutty (I love her) wife Pina and the dog, all at the table, are served by the perky maid Adoración.
  • Pancho's house: before he and his passengers arrive, we are treated to Pancho's sister Candy practicing her shake-and-thrust dance routine. Chela chides her, recommending less sensuality, there will be children and proper married couples at the celebration, and besides, "you know how guys are, remember what happened that OTHER time..." Candela says no such nightmare will ever happen again. "Don't censor me, don't limit my creativity!"

There is a boisterous welcome for the stranger, the dog Popeye does a little dance, we see that Lupita (sister #2) has a bit of a "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" complex. Pancho introduces his sister-in-law Chela (that's Vicki Vicki Vicki of yore) and his "exotic and exuberant" sister Candela.

Pancho, editing out the suicide attempt, tells everyone his mystery guest has had a bit of a shock due to their vehicle almost being in an accident. All stare as she eats (she has to be shown how to hold a tortilla) and she beams, saying the mole is the most delicious thing she's ever eaten. Applauso!

Temo sticks his nose in the cake as "BITE" is chanted, there is the usual out-of-tune rendition of Las Mañanitas (which is actually a lovely song), Chela brings coffee.
  • The party winds down, Doña Fernanda says she has to leave, she'll call a taxi, Pancho says nonsense, I'm going to take you home Mom. (I have adopted an older woman as my mother too so I'm very pleased with this.) "Pancho, I haven't felt this good in a long time, your family is so loving and united..." "Just a normal family," he insists.

She gushes over his admirable qualities some more, he asks why she wanted to jump, she tells him she has cancer and not long to live. (My son, who is a brain cancer survivor, mutters that anybody who gets cancer in a telenovela always dies but I remember a guero who once had leukemia and was completely cured two episodes later and was as handsome and vigorous as ever.)

He's shocked, she says that's just one of her problems, for instance, "I loved a young man, but my father forbade our marriage as he was not of our social standing, and I had a son, I was told he was dead but I don't believe it." ...

... (So now is the time to tell you that our other roommate Mitzi, who has only watched about three hours of telenovelas total and doesn't understand Spanish, said last night at the first appearance of Fernanda, "that's going to turn out to be Pancho's mother.")

So he tells her about his wife dying and we see the flashback of her in the hospital (and as she is failing, the only medical person in the room, a bored nurse, walks out. No medical person lifts a finger to save this young mother? Who, except for a few bruises on her face, looks pretty healthy to me. Where's the crash cart?) and we see Pancho, in an incongruously wild striped shirt, sobbing with baby Temo in his arms ...

... he recovers from his flashback, regrets the melodrama, and reiterates to Fernanda that from now on she will never be alone, "you can always count on me." She says he's taught her that only God writes the ending and that she should keep on keeping on...

... Then he tells her another of HIS problems, which is, that the neighborhood land has been mortgaged since Pancho's grandfather was the owner, and things are worse lately, and a devil of a lawyer Renzo Enzo Rinaldi has been pressing for payment. "What a small world," Fernanda thought-bubbles, "Rinaldi works for me."
  • In the dark, daughter 3 (Lupita) greets her consentido Tomás (meaning that they are at least sort of engaged). They kiss but when his finger strays toward her clavicle she pushes him away, saying: "when we are married!" "Yeah" he mutters, and leaves. She beams, thinking of their marriage and subsequent "special night" when she will, one presumes, Give All.
  • The dashing and spoiled young Freddy comes down the stairs of the mansion he lives in with his parents and the Pomeranian, he's going out. His wonderful daffy blond mom, Pina, says he can't go, what with all the fuss over aunty, but Freddy doesn't care ("probably she's just wandering around out there with Alzheimers" he says).

"My nerves!" Pina exclaims. She strokes her son's head, he leaves. She announces she will faint, and her well-trained husband takes her in his arms and - puts her over by the comfy sofa so when she falls there'll be a soft landing. Pina: "Nobody loves me! I'm lonelier than the moon! Abandoned! Even you, dog, love your daddy and don't care about me! And your daddy is going to go out, too!"
  • Standing in some dark place by the side of a handy race track: let's see, Prince Freddy (styles himself quite a car racer), his supposed girlfriend Mónica (she's daughter of the evil lawyer Enzzo Renso Menso Rinaldi), and Alex (friend), they're waiting for the "King of the Nacos" - "these lower-class boobs are always late." (Naco is a fascinating word and we did a feature on it once but I can't remember how to find it.)

Well, well, it is a small world, because the King of the Nacos is: Tomás! Lupita's erstwhile boyfriend! And with him, Pepe, Lupita's brother. Tomás has "borrowed" his employer's sports car!

To make a long story short, they all trade insults, wager 10,000 pesos on the outcome of the race, Tomás wins but Freddy doesn't pay up, Mónica and Pepe share a few hormone-charged zingers, Prince Freddy and King Tomás and courtiers exchange names and snide threats and part company.
  • Fernanda asks Pancho to drop her in some anonymous place, lying that she's afraid to have the neighbors see her disembark with a man. She calls a taxi. I'm not sure where this is, but Pina and Veens see her disembark (must be a closed-circuit tv camera, maybe at the office?) The aunt calls and curtly announces: "I'm back, see you at work tomorrow," and she hangs up on Veents.
  • Sunrise.
    • Pancho's at the market juggling vegetables, trying to get milk for poor kids when he doesn't have the money for it, and enduring the jibes of his co-workers, who saw him on tv saving Fernanda. They say such things happen only to him and to Pato Lucas (Daffy Duck). "If it hadn't been for you she'd have hung up her tennis shoes." (My son reminds me that in some barrios when a person's killed their shoes are tied together and thrown over a power line.)
    • Fernanda tells her haircutter to give her a whole new look because she's a new woman.
    • Candy tells Ana: stop wearing firemen's clothes, dress more like Greta Garbo.
    • When Pancho gets home, his sister (who claims to have a photographic memory) triumphantly shows him an old magazine with Fernanda on the cover - she's "millonetas" (millionaire-ish)!

BIG MIX from MexicoUPDATE: Sylvia asked about "Big Mix," which was product-placed at the end of this episode. I see it is "Barcel Big-Mix 6 combines six popular Barcel snacks in one mix. It's great when you want to sample different products in one bag." Anybody know what the six popular Barcel snacks in the bag are?

Cuando Me Enamoro #118 Tuesday 10/4/11 Run Fina Run!!!!

Sorry for the delay, I am babysitting a 2 yr old today and I had to read elmo books between scenes, but here it is.

Okay so I think we are in for some crazy shows from here on out. So lets get to the action!!

Jero and Renata are in the hospital waiting room, Jero reveals that Fina may also be the one who attacked Coni. Renata can’t believe it, that her mom could hurt so many people. She finally accepts that her mom is murder. She breaks down on Jero which is very sweet. He holds her why she sobs and tells her that he loves her and tries to make her feel better.

Gonzo tells Regina that Roberta had a heart problem.

Renata recounts her last conversation and her concerns about Rafa. She explains that after the phone call he never met her at the restaurant. Matias walks up behind them and stops to watch this tender moment. Jero is upset that he believed Fina and all the lies she told him, he is blaming himself for everything, Nata takes is face in her hands and tells him that it’s not his fault then she hugs him.

Honi is on the phone Adri, comes in with coffee, he tells her that Roberta should be okay. Roberta’s cell phone rings and Adri answers it and tells Fina she is in the hospital with a heart problem. Fina hangs up. Adri thinks it might be her but can’t be sure.

Matias is talking to Jero and Nata he tells them that Fina has caused many problems and that Fina is the reason that they had the problems they had, and that even though Fina lied and tried to separate them she can’t stop the love they have for each other. He then makes amends with Nata and she accepts. Then Jero puts out his hand to bury things between them and Matias grabs his and an yanks him off the couch into a big hug and they all hug. ( how long will that happiness last? a day or two tops)

Auggie is drinking and making a call and he is not happy, Adri answers Roberta’s phone and tells Auggie that she is in the hospital, he asks for Nata and she say’s she is at the hospital with Roberta, Auggie asks if Jero is with her at the hospital and Adri plays dumb and then makes and excuse to get off the phone without answering his question.

Fina is in a hotel room on the phone with the hospital that won’t give her any information over the phone, she tells her she can’t be there with her daughter and that she needs to know something. As the nurse was asking her co-worker what to do, Gonzo and Gina walk up and the nurse hands him the phone and Fina thinking it’s the Dr starts asking about her daughter, then Gonzo tells her it’s her fault her daughter is in the hospital, then he tell her that they know she is a murderer, also that he knows who she is. ( Oh snap, Fina looks truly freaked out!! hehehe love it)

Gonzo is yelling (veins popping out of his head yelling I think he is upset) He demands that she tell him where she is, then she asks about her daughter and he yells that she wants to know about her daughter, it’s not your daughter. FIna hangs up and curses Coni for talking.

Gonzo tells the recently arrived crowd, Nata, Jero and Matias that Fina just called. They all begin speculating about where she is and what to do next. Adri calls Nata and tells her that Auggie is asking about her and Jero.

Fina is in the hotel, panicking about her daughter and Gonzo. She hears a cop car outside and panics as the cop drives away she breathes a sigh of relief. She says she needs to see her daughter, then she tells herself to calm down she needs to continue with her plan!!

Adri tells Nata that Auggie is upset because he doesn’t know what is going on with her and that he thinks she is with Jero. Nata tells her that she needs to be with him right now.

Jero is talking to Gonzo and Regina they are discussing which daughter is hers they still think it is Roberta, cause of her heart problem. Jero takes an upset Gina for a walk and Matias and Gonzo discuss the differences between the two girls.

Auggie is still upset (good) that Nata is with Jero, his phone rings and it is Nata he answers and asks if she has been real busy, she says yes and then he asks if she can;t answer a cell phone. She tries to explain what is going on, but he gets really upset and yells some more. When she tells him why Jero is there that Fina killed Jero’s brother he gets even more upset that he is not with her during this time. She gets mad and tells him that this is serious and that she will talk to him later and hangs up on him ( you go girl)

Gina tells Jero that it was Fina that she gave the money too, One of the girls is her daughter. Fina took her daughter.

A disguised Fina gets into a taxi.

Jero is telling Gina she thinks it’s Renata. Gina tells him they are going to do DNA to remove any doubts, Jero really thinks its Nata because she is so different and is nothing like her mother. She agrees that Nata is honest, and sweet, but if Roberta is her daughter she does not know what she will do, since she does not understand her.

Nata thanks Gonzo for everything he is doing. She says she does not know who she is. He tells her that she is Renata Monterubbio always and forever. They hug as Gina and Jero look on and smile,

Nata, Jero, Gina, And Gonzo are all asleep in the waiting room as FIna walks by and says she hates them all. Nata wakes and thinks that she is happy to be close to Jero.

Fina is asking the nurse to let her see her daughter and she tells her she is not going to lose her job for her. Fina begs and puts on the crocodile tears. Then she brings out the cash a lot of cash.

Suddenly everyone is awake and talking to the Dr who tells them that she is fine and can go home soon. They are happy that everyone is going to be okay. Jero wants to take Nata home and then Nata thanks Gina and tells her that she is thankful for all that she has done. Gina is happy that they have made up and that she needs to be patient to find out who her daughter is. Inez and Isidrio come in and ask everyone is doing blah blah blah!!

Fina finally gets into see Berta and Berta calls her a killer and tells her to get out, Fina tries to talk to her, but she yells to get out of her life and stay away from her. Fina looks completely shocked. Berta continues to yell at her to get out, Fina tries to talk to her, then a nurse comes in and calls for help as Berta yells at Fina to stay out of her life forever. Fina runs out of the room.

Carlos and Matis are kissing and she asks about his family and he says they still are not on board, she thanks him for choosing her over her family. They are kissing as Kari walks by and daydreams about her and Laza.

Laza is walking and spare girls shows up and surprises him. They catch up go for a walk together.

The same nurse that let Fina in comes to tell them that someone got into his daughters room. Gonzo runs to check it out the Dr. is checking her out and Gonzo tries to calm her down. She tells him that is was her mom. Berta is really upset as Gonzo goes to call the police, Gina looks like she wants to comfort her, but doesn’t.

Nata and Jero are leaving the hospital they are talking about something ( I missed it) but Jero sees Fina walking Nata chases after her and Fina looks back as the cab races off.

Padre is relaxing as Ms. Dr, comes in and tells her Uncle that Jero is on the capital with Nata and her family, she looks like she knows better, but is still in denial. She goes to kiss him and notices something not right so she asks him if he is feeling well. She asks him to let her check him out her agrees.

Nata runs into the hospital to tell Gonzo she saw FIna, Gonzo tells her that she was in Berta’s room, Jero asks if they called the cops. They all agree that she needs to be in jail, except Nata who can’t hate her mom yet (just wait you will)

Auggie answers his phone it’s spare girl. She says she needs to talk to him, he reminds her of they crap she pulled when he was in prison and she tells him that she needs to talk to him in person and he wants to know why, she says it was about Jero.

The cops are taking Berta’s statement. She tells them that Fina said nothing. The detective tells them that Fina is smart and they need to be patient. Gonzo tells her that they will bring her home soon, she begs them not to take her back to that house and they agree she will stay somewhere else.

Fina is distraught about how Berta found out that she killed Rafa. She can’t believe that she lost her daughter she swears she will never lose her daughter. ( she is cracking)

Gina and Jero are talking about what a creep Fina is an that he swears Nata is her daughter. She says that she feels it’s Berta. Jero tells her he knows its Nata cause of the the way the girls were raised, Fina was cruel to Nata and spoiled Roberta.

Spare girl meets with Auggie and she flashes back to spoiling his wine. Auggie grabs her and starts to choke her when Laza sees him and yells at him then he runs off. She tells Laza that he was the one trying to ruin La Bonita.

Gina and Jero are talking about Renata and Gina asks him if he thinks they will get back together she says she is the daughter of Rafa murderer, Nata overhears that and thinks he won’t love her again.

My DVR cut off the avances so no previews, but tonight is a lot to digest!!! This is getting crazier every episode and we are not even at Ultimos Capitulos yet, goodness!!

Una Familia Con Suerte #1 Tue 10/4/11 Pancho's Lucky Day

Sorry for the delay! I have a feeling I'm going to have trouble with this one... I can't understand half of what Pancho and his friends say. And they talk so fast! Please don't hesitate to point out things that I got wrong. On the bright side, I'm probably going to be learning a lot.
Opening credits are followed by a flashback to the old-timey times of... 1990, it says. (Thank you, producers, for not doing this scene in black & white. That would have made me feel old.) It seems we're at a wedding in Toluca.

A humble white K-car rolls up to a humble curb, and a humble pair of shoes gets out and opens the door for a bride. The humble feet belong to the groom, Pancho, who is sporting an intense mullet. (A mullet? Excellent! That satisfies my rigorous quality check for historical authenticity!) The bride, Laurita, is a gigantic pair of eyelashes with a woman hanging off of them. Pancho and Laurita declare their everlasting, infinite love to one another as he lifts her up and carries her to the reception. A crowd cheers, and there is a jumble of excited talk. I think she tells everyone he's her a napkin. (Sorry, I haven't recapped in a while... this kind of giddy chatter is way over my head - I can't even find definitions for most of these words!)

The bride's sister, Chela, greets them. I don't recall that much bright red eyeshadow ever being popular in the 90s. Maybe the 80s, but we can pretend that she put lipstick on her eyelids by mistake after having a couple of drinks.

Now for the food. Lots and lots of food. I'm replaying it in slow motion. There are plenty of helpful close-ups. I see a moles and salsas and pork and and other meat and bean and vegetable dishes. And rice. There's something wrapped in big leaves. There's a woman making fresh tortillas. There's tequila. I'm sold on this couple - they really know how to throw a party! I hope they stay together forever and ever so I can recap their food!!

Pancho, the groom, gives a speech thanking family and friends. He mentions something about a "cooperacha" and payments. Okay, I think he's saying that of the money they get from the wedding, half is going to be a down payment on some land and half is going towards his honeymoon. Then Laurita, the giggly bride, admits that she's had some drinks and says she has a little surprise. Is it a baby? Phew, no. Not yet. It's a song-and-line-dance routine.

The crowd counts to three as Laurita prepares to throw the bouquet. Ha ha, she fakes them out! What a kidder! "Sis, let's see if you can find your Pancho, too!" she says to Chela, tossing the bouquet directly at her. (Chela does catch it; however, going by the synopsis Melinama posted here last week, Laurita probably should have chosen her words a little more carefully. It seems that she has practically doomed Chela to fall in love with Pancho himself! But let's not get ahead of ourselves.)

Next, Chela collects some money in a shoe. This must be the "cooperacha" - I think they're going to need a bigger shoe unless they are planning to honeymoon in the mall parking lot. Then again, they're already in Mexico, so that should save them on airfare!

Now the cutting of the cake. He makes like he's going to take a bite out of the cake itself. Another kidder! What a perfect couple! I know they will be together forever and always!

Now the garter. She slips as he tugs at her leg, and she jokes that he nearly became a widower. He assures her that they will grow old together and promises that he will dedicate every day to making her happy. "The day that you die, I will die with you, I promise. I love you." Are you worried? I'm not worried.

Now Achy-Breaky Heart, which was recorded in 1992. These people are way ahead of their time!

Later: Most of the guests have left, except for a few close friends and/or relatives. Chela has made a video of Pancho and Laurita's courtship, which they are watching in mysterious, ancient "VHS" format. In the video, the lovebirds are frolicking around a fountain in a beautiful greenhouse garden. At first, they don't realize Chela is taping them on their rated-G date. Then they catch her. Ha, ha! What a bunch of kidders! Happiness forever, etc.

In the next video, they are on another date, again near a fountain (outdoors this time). Pancho gives Laurita an ice cream, in which he has hidden an engagement ring. Fortunately, she does not break a tooth and/or chokes on this ring, so we can look forward to a long and happy future for them! He asks her to marry him, become the mother of his chilpayates (children), the mistress of his quincenas (biweekly wages), even if sometimes they don't have anything to eat and are poor for the rest of their lives.

Despite the serious dent that poverty would put in her makeup budget, she tearfully says yes and eagerly tries to put the ring on. He takes the ring from her and insists on putting it on her finger himself. A crowd of onlookers cheers.

Laurita thanks Chela for the video. Pancho hints to the remaining guests that he'd like to have some privacy with his new bride. Everyone leaves except Chela, who hangs around a little too long with a weird look on her face while Pancho and Laurita kiss.

Let's assume she went home immediately after. We don't want this to get too weird.

Now it's 2011. It looks like Pancho is still living in the same neighborhood. It's early morning, and he's asleep, dreaming about the his wedding day and his promise that on the day Laurita dies, he will die with her. He wakes up in a panic and checks beside him, but she's not in the bed. In fact, it's obvious that she hasn't been near that bed in a long time.

He lights a candle and apologizes to her photo for not making good on his promise; but if he had gone with her, who would care for their children? His maudlin musings are interrupted by the faint chatter of a thousand children, and he excuses himself to the photo and gives it a kiss, explaining that the kids have woken up and will soon be there, and Temo will surely be the first to show up because it's his birthday.

Sure enough, the light comes on and Temo leaps onto the bed, telling Pancho that it's his birthday. Pancho feigns surprise. Temo reports that his siblings don't want to sing him his mañanitas, and asks Pancho to sing it for him. Pancho tells him to have one of his aunts sing it.

Now they are joined by a zillion other kids. (We'll sort them out when they become relevant.) How can these people be so cheerful so early in the morning? It's still dark outside!

Aunts Chela and Candy (Candela, Pancho's sister) join them, and now Temo gets his mañanitas song.

Later, Pancho is driving a delivery van. (The mullet is gone, by the way, and it would appear that he lost his comb as well.) On the front of the van is his name, Pancho López, and the name of his business, which is La B___ (I'm not censoring it, I just don't have a good enough picture to make out what it says.) He turns off the radio, annoyed by the cheerful song. His pal protests. Pancho explains that he and Laurita danced to that song the night of their wedding. The pal remembers, but Pancho tells him about the promise he made to Laurita when she nearly fell off the stage. She died eight years ago, and he still hasn't made good on that promise.

The pal, who I believe is Pancho's brother, says that the kids need him, etc. Pancho says it's just that he's been brooding lately, since Temo's birthday is also the anniversary of Laurita's death.

(Let's try to remember that this is a comedy!)

The pal/bro asks about the birthday plans. Pancho says they're going to pick up a cake and then open their store, or something like that.

An older woman, Fernanda, is standing in a doctor's office. This must be a swanky medical practice - she's wearing a fur-trimmed smock! My doctor's office only has plain cloth smocks!

Ah, perhaps that's just her coat. In any case, she doesn't want to sit down. And if he's got bad news for her, she'd like him to get right to it. "You've always been that way, since you were very young, very decisive, willful, sure of yourself..." he begins, but she cuts him off. He apologizes, but offers us a little more backstory: "I've known you for a long time, since that thing happened with your son..." Again she cuts him off, "you know perfectly well that I never talk about that. Can you tell me what I have?"

Yes he can: she has a malignant tumor. "You have very little time to live." (Ha! He sure told her!) He says he's not just her doctor, but her friend, and he'll be with her to the very end.

Fernanda is bummed, but asks the doctor not to tell anyone. He kisses her on the cheek.

Pancho and his pal/bro arrive at the market. The bro/pal is talking his head off, and honestly I have no idea what he's talking about, but then Pancho worries about how he's going to explain himself to the kids if they end up in the street. I believe they just started this venture at the market and aren't sure if it will succeed (please correct me if I'm wrong). They're behind on some payments. Pancho asks bro/pal to keep quiet about this around the kids until it's all sorted out.

Fernanda exits the medical building and tells herself she doesn't have the strength for a fight. She would have given all her money to have a little bit of love, she thinks, "but now I know what I have to do." She sees her chauffeur waiting with his back turned; she sneaks away without his seeing.

"I know what I have to do," Pancho tells bro/pal. "Pay." And to do this, for his family to be able to go on, they're going to have even less. But hopefully, they'll do well at the festival and that will fix everything. (Meanwhile, Pancho is inspecting some onions in a crate, but he is dissatisfied with their quality, he can't take these to his clients, so he gives the whole crate back to the merchant.)

Chacho! That's the bro/pal's name.

A kid named Filemón comes by with a hand-truck. He's depressed. His boss is still sick. The doctor wrote her a bunch of prescriptions, but they're too expensive. Pancho tells Fil he'll help out and give him a double-tip because it's "happy hour." (He says it in English and pronounces both H's.) "That's 'la hora feliz,' kid, don't know you French?" Chacho jokes.

Chacho asks Pancho how he's going to pay Fil a double-tip when he just finished saying he didn't have a penny. Alas, I don't understand Pancho's answer. If I did, I'd use his magical money-making technique myself.

Back at home, Chela is working with a band for Temo's birthday party. Pancho's daughter Ana plays accordion. (Really? That's Sherlyn? How can she possibly look even younger than she did five years ago?) Meanwhile, Temo practices soccer with a dog as goaltender. There's some discussion about the evening's performances.

Elsewhere...

A fancy white car (not much like any I have ever owned) rolls up to a fancy house, and a fancy pair of shoes gets out of the car and opens the door for Sergio Sendel, aka Vicente, whose shoes are even fancier. "Oh my love, who is the prettiest? Who is it?" And he leans forward a little bit, waving a gift. It's a necklace! A marvelous necklace!

A necklace for... a little fifi dog?

"Because you are the only being on earth that will never betray me." A Pomeranian, I believe. Vicente proudly slips the necklace over the dog's head. The dog, whose name is Abejita (Little Bee?), seems unimpressed and was probably hoping for a dried liver snack.

Vicente's phone rings. (Remembering previous Sendel characters, I fear for the phone's life; however, this would seem to be a kinder, gentler Sendel.) It's Gonzalo, Miss Fernanda's chauffeur. Vicente apologizes profusely to the dog and takes the call. Gonzalo tells him that Miss Fernanda came back after her appointment with Dr. Octavio.

She was with Dr. O? That's news to Vicente.

Fernanda is wandering the streets alone with the report of her biopsy results clutched to her chest, pondering her personal going-out-of-life sale.

Meanwhile, Pancho and Chacho are driving along, and Chacho is talking his head off as usual, saying that for all they have in love, they lack in money. Pancho says that money is just vanity. Chacho thinks it would be very helpful to have money coming out of a faucet. Pancho warns that tough problems would go along with it. (I'm thinking, for one thing, where are they going to get running water if the faucet is plugged up with cash? But I guess you'd at least be able to afford a good plumber.)

Fernanda is on an overpass, feeling sorry for herself. "You've got nobody to cry for you, nor do you have the right to shed a single tear." She looks down to the deadly ground below. She drops her purse, and it falls - dramatically - a mere six inches. (Unless there's another fifi dog inside, I don't think the purse is a big problem.) I think she's taking that old saying "you can't take it with you" too literally!

Vicente is chewing out the staff for losing track of his aunt Fernanda. He takes a phone call, during which it is revealed that most of the world's population will be searching high and low for her. He makes the staff say "¡Sí, Señor!" three times, each time louder than the last, before dismissing them.

Next, a frenzied montage of the staff and authorities (including uniformed security officers from Avon, yep, I'm pretty sure it's THAT Avon) combing the city looking for Auntie, showing her photos to people on the street, etc. while radio show hosts and billboards plead for her safe return. (I notice that most of the vehicles have their logos blacked out.)

While all this has been happening, Fernanda has taken only a few more steps. She climbs up onto the concrete barrier, still clutching her biopsy report. She looks down, and I feel woozy. I don't like heights, even when they're someone else's heights on TV. It doesn't seem to bother her, though. But she's in a different mood than I am.

Pancho and Chacho see her. Pancho slams on the brakes. She puts one foot in front of the railing, which is just low enough to really catch someone's shoe and make them trip prematurely.

That's exciting, so let's go somewhere else. We're at Vicente's house, where Vicente's wife Pina is admiring her fifi dog's new necklace. I recognize Pina's voice before I recognize her face - it's Daniela Castro, who was Lisabeta, Ricardo's scheming cousin in Pasión. She's worried that someone has stashed Fernanda away someplace, and maybe they'll go after their son Freddy, too.

Now we're at a NASCAR race. For years I've successfully avoided watching auto racing every weekend, and now here it is in a telenovela. Sigh. A girl named Mónica is talking to a guy named Alex, who is wearing a NASCAR shirt. She's worried because Vicente and Pina haven't shown up. (It seems that the racetrack was somehow excluded from the search for Fernanda.) Alex gives an unnecessary speech about his beloved sport and the drivers and how it brings families together.

Freddy is one of the drivers. Mó doesn't want to look. She doesn't like the yellow banners.

The pit crew is servicing Freddy's car (#3, wasn't that Dale Earnhardt's number?) and someone else's (#12). I'm not sure exactly what sets Freddy off, but he's unhappy with one of the guys. "I'm going to give that mechanic a good scare," Freddy thought-bubbles, and nearly runs him over as he peels out. "Did you see what Freddy did to me?" the mechanic asks his coworkers. He vows to get the last laugh tonight.

Back to Fernanda. She now has both feet on the death-plunge side of the railing. Ahhh, I feel better now - no chance it will trip her! Pancho begs her to come down. Everything he says (especially "think of your children!") just upsets her more. He begs her not to fall; it will make him suffer.

In desperation, Pancho cries, "what if I adopt you as my mommy?" He tells her to fight for her life; he tells her that only God knows when we will die; "I just adopted you - please don't make me an orphan!"

She almost cracks a smile and finally reaches for his hand, but then she loses her balance and slips. (Drat that railing!) Pancho struggles to keep his grip as Fernanda realizes that she doesn't want it to end this way after all.

Tomorrow:
The avances mostly rehashed what we saw today, but there's enough to confirm that Fernanda will survive. I don't know what the Avon guys are going to do once the search is called off.

Today's episode is covered in Melinama's Recap #35, Thursday segment, at this link.

On YouTube, haguilar78's clips for Cap 89 start at this link.

Carlos, you really outdid yourself today. That last picture is probably my favorite of the whole series.
