Our problem here at Caray, Caray!

1. We have willing and able bloggers

2. We have readers

3. We don't have a novela we like

I too was horrified to hear that Barrera is so long. Maybe it will improve after taking the long leap into the future today - but what if it doesn't?

I love Chris's recaps of La Fea Mas Bella and hope he keeps it up - and maybe he'll even win some viewers - but I just can't watch this show. The whole idea of calling people ugly offends me mightily, I don't like bimbos, and since I strongly suspect that the "happy ending" is going to involve Lety taking off her glasses, getting cool clothes, and becoming foxy, what's the message really? I'd rather be rooting for somebody who actually IS smart and plain. I'm tired of miniskirts and big breasts.

How long is Peregrina going on? Maybe whatever follows it will be better, in which case I would happily jump ship. Or maybe they'll realize what a dog Barrera is and take its good time slot away.

Thoughts?

I can't agree more with your suspected happy ending. And I mean that in a strictly non-massage parlor way. Honestly if this were a show in English and I weren't watching it to help learn a language, there's no way I'd watch it. There are so many really GOOD shows that don't make it here in the USA, it's amazing that this pile stays on in Mexico. I'm chalking it up to cultural differences. That being said, as a learning exercise, La Fea is a very fun way to learn. But really that's all it is. I hope you can all find a show you like, I'm sure Alborada will tough to follow. Here in Chicago there are couple channels that show Novelas each night, what about where the rest of you are? Maybe Univision needs to feel the combined power of your remotes changing the channel.

I was thinking along the same lines, Melinama. As soon as ANYTHING better comes along, we drop Barerra like a used tissue and go for the new one. A good place to check out the novela inventory, so to speak, is the Esmas website: http://www.esmas.com/telenovelas/
There are two new ones that are on in Mexico: Duelo de Pasiones stars Pablo Montero. He is quite cute. And there is Heridas de Amor. I don't like Jacqueline Bracamontes too much and the male lead, Guy Ecker, doesn't look too great either (but he's better than Unibrow!). Peregrina ended in Mexico in the first week of April so I guess it will be ending here soon. I haven't seen any Ultimos capitolos ads for Peregrina yet but with TiVo, I don't see all the ads.
Then there's Telemundo. I watched a little of Pasiones de Gavilanes on that channel a while ago because I like Mario Cimarro but the titles were in English. They have a much cooler website than Esmas does:
http://www.telemundo.com/novelas/index.html.
I guess we keep on with Barerra until something better comes along.

While I check in from time to time to see what's happening on the blog, I am watching Mi Destino Eres Tu on Telefutura. It's no Alborada, but it sure beats anything that is on Univision these days. It has three easy-on the-eyes actors for those who consider that important (one has already died two weeks into the story - but there will be flashbacks). It is on at 6:00 in the morning in this area. One problem may be that not everyone has access to Telefutura. I am going to start checking Telemundo to see if anything is ending soon. I really don't like coming into a telenovela in the middle, and I will drop one in midstream in a hot minute if I find something starting that I think will be better. At my age (I'm retired) life is too short to watch bad telenovelas. For me it's better to rent Spanish language movies to work on comprehension during a telenovela dry spell.

I have seen the number of Barrera episodes listed three ways:
1) 130 (200)
2) (130) 200
3) 200

So I don't know if this means they originally had 130 episodes and increased to 200 (why?) or the other way around (makes more sense but I doubt it), or whatever.

I despaired after watching Barrera for the first time after Alborada. It was a big let-down and I couldn't imagine trying to translate it week after week. Such hard work for such a dismal show. Melinama gave me a bit of a pep talk and I recognized the whole point was to work on Spanish skills while at the same time having some entertaining interaction with readers and other bloggers. The recaps are hilarious and it would be a shame for them to stop. I think it would be fun if more people got involved, either on a regular or irregular basis. I love that ferro94 is doing just this.

Although I have warmed up somewhat to Barrera I would drop it in a second for a better novela. The thought of watching/working on it from now until December kind of scares me. I don't know if I get Telefutura, I'll have to check. I'll also keep my ears and eyes open for something better.

I haven't been watching the other show at all, just La Fea, but from what you say maybe it should be called "Barrera de Diversion." Or - why didn't I think of this before "El Feo"

I think it feas end that way as well. I have never seen this type of story end with the duckling staying downtrodden. I was horrified to hear how many episodes are left. I really don't like feas or barrera that mich either. But am also using the show for Spanish comprehension practice. I have been existing on netflix copies of old Fernando Colunga telenovelas.
I also really enjoy the recaps and look forward to the laughs that I get over reading your impression of what's going on. I would really hate for it to end. It's a highlight of my day.
There is a novela on telemundo that stars Gabriel Spanic, the same girl who was in la usurpadora. She was really great in it. I have watched it a few times. Everybody on the show is gorgeous but I don't speak enough to know if it has a plot or more cheese. I will gladly jump ship with the rest of the gang! Whether you think that's a good thing.....

First thing I want to say is..you guys are all greatly appreciated for what you do here. I agree with Catherine & Sylvia, it would be a shame for these recaps to end. I also understand that it is just as much about learning as it is about enjoyment. I know that my understanding of the Spanish language is only about 50%. I wish there was a way for all of us 50%'ers out there to be able to translate for a recap, I'm sure my 50% is different than someone else's 50%. It would be great if we could get those two halves together somehow.
Maybe there could be an "open comment/recap Thursdays" where some people could post the parts they understood and other people could fill in the blanks or something.

If you guys want to jump ship and go onto another telenovela...I am with you!

Thank you,
Marie--a recap wantabe.

I found the name of the show on telemundo. It's called Teirra Des Passiones. It's on at the same time as barrera. Has any body else watched it? I only was interested because the lead actress was so good in la usurpadora. So I tuned in one night, looked good but I don't speak enough to follow it. The opening is a little strange with the lead actress singing and dancing but a little cheese is a good thing...

I will gladly jump ship. Then we can post an ending to Barrera when it ends sometime next year. Ha!

I have to admit that I have a hard time seeing children being mistreated. Even Jacintas method of sending the child to bed without dinner is sick. Soooo Im game!

I've also been watching Tierra de Pasiones on Telemundo with Gabriela Spanic. I was watching it as well as Alborada, and it suffered in comparison, but it's way better than Barrera or La Fea Mas Bella. The problem is that it's so far along for anyone else who wanted to start watching. Its set in the wine country, about owners of vineyards. One assumes it's Napa Valley in California, but the funny thing is whenever they go to "la ciudad", it's Miami!

I did some recaps as a sub for Alborada, but I just can't watch Barreras. Does everyone who logs on here get Telemundo, or do some of you only get Univision? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, have a satellite dish, and get about 6 Spanish language stations, none of which requires me paying more to get them.

Hello All,

I agree Barerra Stinks. La Fea is silly and over the top. However, Chris's recaps are keeping me watching. Thanks to all you Bloggers' hard work.

Rhonda

for everyone who is interested - "La Fea" will probably get more interesting towards the second half (whenever that is) because Ernesto LaGuardia will be introduced as a rival to Fernando for Lety's affections, so to speak. Also, from the preview reports on HOY, Joanna Benedick has also signed up for a special role in this novela.

just thought you'd like to know this tidbit - I was briefly watching Galavision last night and spotted a short promo for "El Privilegio de Mandar," which is the comedic parody produced by Carla Estrada; it will start May 21. Unfortunately, I didn't catch what time it will be airing.
