Amar Friday 1/4/08 In which the show drags on even more

How could there be two more weeks of this!

I'm a fill-in recapper here, and I haven't been watching (or reading recaps) every day, so I'm doing my best to understand plot twists that I have missed. As you all said regarding Thursday, it's like there's a personality transplant for everyone.

We open with a recap of the last three scenes: Caty overhears about the bracelet, Azul thinks longingly about the past while looking at her bracelet. Gloria tells Silvana that it's never too late to do the right thing. Sure . . .

Silvana overhears Diego and Caty talking. Caty tells him she doesn't want him to marry that evil witch. Well, she doesn't call her an evil witch. Silvana interrupts before she can say much more.

LF is having a conversation with some older guy who is his father? The father seems to want him not to marry Azul, because why should he give a name to someone else's kid?

Ceci tells Clem and Anibal about her recent almost kiss with Mario. They talk about how LF is now free and she can go out with him. (I missed any episodes where the chronology with LF and Ceci is explained. Did Ceci go out with him before he met Azul?) Clem says she doesn't trust Silvana.

LF continues to talk to his father.

LF talks to the camera and says "where are you, Azul." Azul moons at the camera and thought bubbles "I miss you." But who is she talking about?

Silvana is talking to her mother, who is still trying to get her to take the righteous path. Silvana talks to Azul on the cell phone and asks for her drunken jailer, er, Manuel. Mom wonders who it is. Silvana says it's about a modeling assignment. Floria wonders why she's so agitated about just a modeling assignment.

Silvana wants her mother's help in winning over Diego's family. Mom says she should treat them nicely (use honey). I can't stand watching this psycho liar anymore!

Now Caty tells Diego that Silvana yelled at her when they were out last week. Diego tells Silvana they can't marry. His daughter's opinion is paramount. Caty doesn't want to change Azul for Silvana. Silvana goes on and on in a very boring scene where she begs for another chance.

Lidia is talking to one of the plastic surgeons about her business, which I don't understand. Tavo lurks jealously in the hall and listens.

Silvana comes into Caty's room to talk. Caty has the largest mountain of stuffed animals I have ever seen. Silvana tries to win her over by telling her how much she loves her.

Silvana talks to Clem and says that Clem has finally succeeded in breaking her up with Diego. Gee, when I first was watching this show, wasn't Clem trying to put them together? What happened? When did Clem wise up?
Anyway, Silvana suddenly comes up with a diabolical plan. She tells Clem that she has something of Diego's to remember him by--implying it's a baby. Tell me, folks--did Diego and Silvana actually sleep together recently? I thought it was an abortive attempt. Or does Diego think they did it? He's such an idiot.

Caty asks Diego if Silvana's having a baby. She tells him that Silvana asked that she not tell anyone. Diego calls Silvana. She checks her caller id and smiles conspiratorially but doesn't answer. I"ve got you now, she says. Suffer a little. She swaggers out. She is at the airport waiting for a flight to Guadalajara, apparently.

Tavo now springs out from his hiding place and tells Lidia he can't marry her. I can't follow this story and his annoying tests. Is he really rich? She convinces him she really wants him even if he's porr. All she wants is him. Haven't we heard this before? She is going to work to get back his money? Can someone fill me in on what is going on here?

The reporter finds Frijolito. How'd you find me, Frijo asks. Well, that's what reporters do, he's told. The reporter tells Frijo that he knows that Silvana accused Frijo unjustly and wants more info. Frijo won't tell tales. He wants to genius reporter to figure it out for himself.

GSD worries about his baby. He blows enough smoke to kill three babies.

Clem and Diego discuss Silvana's baby alert.

Lidia and the plastic surgeon rehash her situation with Tavo. Just then the phone rings. It's GSD calling to say there's a problem with his baby.

GSD blows more smoke while worrying. There's a long talk between him and LF where nothing happens.

Clem and Diego call Gloria and find out that Silvana went to Guadalajara. They're all beginning to smell a rat.

Silvana arrives and finds Manuel passed out drunk on the couch. She tells him that Diego broke up with her but she planted the pregnancy idea. Manuel has a "scathingly brilliant idea." (courtesy Hayley Mills in "The Trouble with Angels." He will impregnate Silvana. I'll pause while you all barf. Anyway, that was the end. Does he think this will be a way to outsmart DNA testing? Is he going to do it the traditional way, or turkey baster. I don't want to know. Yuck.

You evil, evil woman! If I'd been drinking anything, you would so owe me a new keyboard right now :) Hilarious recap! Don't worry, a lot of what's going on doesn't make much sense even if you do watch on a daily basis.

Turkey baster?! Priceless.

Thanks, Nina, for the recap. Ewwww..I just took a shower, but I feel like I should take another after reading Manuel's great idea. He is beyond redemption. Silvana drugged Diego, and we had a scene of her on top of him, but neither Diego or the audience know whether or not they did the deed. I think not, and Silvana is just a big , morally bankrupt Ceci met LF before Azul met him. When Azul said ''I miss you''...she meant LF because Silvana talked her into running away from LF when she found out that Azul was pregnant. Azul and LF fell in loooove after he rescued her as she was roaming around in her haze of amnesia. liar. I think that Tavo has money , but he has been ''testing'' Lidia to see if she is just after his cash. Lidia doesn't look like she's very good at taking tests. Thanks for the recap.

Whoops...I inserted a comment and screwed things up. That should have read that ''Silvana is a morally bankrupt liar.'' That's what I get for hurrying to type a comment in between tasks!

Nina, thanks so much for doing this. As grating as this novela is I think those of us who watch it have that special kind of love-hate relationship that you can only have for a novela that has been extended past its expiration date.

LF is having a conversation with some older guy who is his father?

I think that LF called him Ceferino. So I got the sense that he's just another guy from his town, family freind, handyman? maybe looking after his mom's place while she's gone off to do whatever it was. I think I heard a religious connotation, like a pilgrimage or retreat. Maybe to pray for her son and (so she thinks for her new grandchild).

On LF-Ceci: You probably didn't miss anything. We see them meet at the reception for Azul's dad, he spills a drink on her. He offers to pay for the drycleaning. Ceci sees it as an excuse to meet up later. She invites him to the fashion show but he sends flowers instead because they moved up is flight for his post grad studies in Spain in neonatology. They correspond via email for awhile but when he gets back to Mexico it trails off. Ceci keeps hoping but we know that LF has moved on because he gets instantly smitten by Azulcena.

I fail to understand the Lidia/Tavo thing as you do. Yeah he still thinks that Lidia is still a golddigger. Apparently he's also worried about him cheating on him too because he's decided to stalk her when she visits business prospects. Granted, Mario seemed to be casually putting the moves on her (brushing her hair back--ick! Ceci, look out!). Lidia's plan to make more money is to sell plastic surgery insurance policies. I am not sure if this is malpractice lawsuit insurance for the doctor or for the patient somehow. But I am sure with all the failed plastic surgery, there's a market.

This Silvana fake pregnancy is mirroring Sonar no Cuesta Nada. If we get meses despues, they will actually be able to pull off a plot in a week that took about two months of episodes in that novela, with the evil character faking a pregnancy and kidnapping the heroine's baby and pretending that it was her own. (The same father was involved also.) Based on the look that Silvana gave Manuel, I don't think she's going to go that route unless she absolutely has to.
I don't know that Diego and Silvana have actually done the deed. I remember that Silvana drugged Diego and HE THINKS they did it. In Diego's mind they did do it at least once so it's not crazy for Diego to think that he might have knocked her up. Silvana has been going around telling everyone that they've been doing it like bunnies so it is plausible to everybody else that she's pregnant.

The subplot involving Emilia's at risk pregnancy is interesting. When it first came up I wondered if they were going to use it as an opportunity to go for some other controversial topic like abortion. Then they chose to go through with it. But what if they find out that the baby has serious birth defects or something? Still could happen, although LF being a neo-natologist would seem to rule that out, since he needs to show off his skills or why have that specialty for the plot? Loved how GSD lights up in the kitchen right outside their bedroom door where Emilia is. That is the way tobacco addicts are. He's stressed so without even thinking about it, out come the coffin nails. LF is a doctor, he probably should have said something.

On Clemi-Silvana. After Silvana came back with Japan, Clemi was one of the first to notice that Silvana had gone off the deep end. You are right, in Phase I of the novela, she liked her better than Azul.

Sorry make that When Silvana came back FROM Japan. Can't type this morning.

Lidia is one of the characters that I believe was "redeemed". She's trying to earn her own money by selling insurance for plastic surgery procedures and she was trying to reassure Tavo she'd be financially supportive of him. The doctor she was talking to, Mario, is Emilia's OB-GYN and also happens to be Ceci's new love interest.

Sorry, you have to go through this, Nina. If you had watched a few weeks ago, you would have seen what looked like a happy ending: Azul & Diego got married and adopted Caty; Clemi divorced sleazy Manuel and married Anibal; Arnie & Julio got maarried and GSD accepted them; Ceci met LF at a ceremony honoring GSD for his work on the toxin cure. Mo was in jail and Silvana was in Japan. Hunky Andres was pushing up daisies but luckily he resurfaced in Passion looking just as good. All was well with the world. I have no clue why they tacked on this dopey post-ending.

I always liked the twists on this show but with the amnesia thing, the train just jumped the track completely.

I was probably typing while Margaret was posting so sorry for being redundant on some points.

Thanks for all your fill ins, guys. I did watch that wedding, actually, Jestena, and I find this extension absurd. Even then, there were questions about what happened to Mo. I think they never cleared up whether Azul and Mo's marriage was ended by divorce or annullment.

Thank you Nina, I am another who must know how the show ends but I don't have the stomach to actually watch it. The whole Amnesia thing, and Silvana (who really hasn't ever been presented as being very smart) getting over on everyone, make me crazy. Sitting through entire episodes makes me frustrated. I applaud you all for helping the rest of us get to the end.

"the train just jumped the track completely" --

Actually, I think este programa se solto' el tiburon . . .
(it jumped the shark . . .)

Silvana's personality change just doesn't ring very true in any respect. In Phase I, it was all about Nico. Just putting Mo in jail meant that now she's forgotten all about him? There was a whole subplot where she started attatching herself to Katy as a surrogate Nico but in Phase II Katy is just an obstacle in her way to getting Diego. I know success spoils some people but this just isn't very credible. They would have done better to kill her off as a character and introduce some totally new person like they did with LF, Mario, the MS et. al.

About Azul and Mo's divorce. Yeah, we heard more about Lidia and Piero's. The only time it was mentioned was that one jail visit that Azul had with Mo, where she tells him that (1) She's getting a divorce and after he starts yelling that he'll put Katy in an orphanage so she can grow up alone (2) that she's got custody of Katy already. It was shortly after that that she and Diego go to pick up Katy at that child protection services place. I never understood why that happened since Azul was already married to Mo, she'd never have lost custody but I don't know Mexican child welfare laws.

Margaret, Silvana's storyline has certainly become darker as the novela unfolded but I always thought of her as being mentally unstable -- unhinged by her son's death. She had just come out of a mental hospital and was being seen by Emilia. Still, to me she was never a sympathetic character. She seemed driven by revenge rather than grief. In her obsession to punish Mo, she was using Caty, and I didn't see any genuine warmth or any understanding of what Caty was suffering. I didn't get any sense of her maternal instincts then or now. Her treatment of Caty and Frijolito is distasteful to watch.

You make some good points, Jestena. It's true that she had just come out of mental hospital and one thing that's been consistent is her obsession with Diego, and in fact, didn't they sleep together in the earlier part of the show? But I saw her earlier relationship with Katy more than her just using her. I think she wanted to use her to find out what happened to Nico but then she becomes as obsessed about what will happen to Caty when Mo's empire collapses--it's the whole pretext for her "alliance" with Azul near the end of Phase I. At one point she even wanted to adopt her until she learned that Azul and Diego would be be doing that.
