Cuidado #67, Tues Dec 30. Juan Miguel Just Can’t Shake His Ball and Chain.

Casilda and her nasty minions encounter Purita under attack by the Lecherous Loser on a busy street. They demonstrate just exactly how upstanding and Christian they are by calling her rude names and chasing her back to the apartments, then throwing big rocks at her and Olga. Olga is hit with a rock and collapses. I haven’t been desensitized at all; this scene is every bit as grim the second time.

Viviana is lying on the sofa after her “fainting spell,” while Onelia rubs her face and arms with a tissue or something. She says she’s not feeling well enough to go to Eduardo’s office, so Juan Miguel says Ed can come to them. Viv tries to protest that it isn’t necessary. JM fidgets and looks irritated and amused.

Out in the countryside, the orchards are under A LOT of water, and the rain is still coming down. Marichuy is sleeping peacefully, and Cande/Lala enters and tells Micaela about Viv’s pregnancy. Just then Mari yells and grasps her belly.

Ceci laments Viv’s pregnancy; what betrayal of her daughter! Patricio arrives at home to hear the horrible news.

The winged monkeys argue over who threw the stone that hit Olga while Purita wails and accuses them of murder. All but Casilda flee; Casilda looks maybe a little bit sorry. Perhaps more sorry that she might get in trouble than sorry about what she’s done. She hesitates before leaving, and if she hasn’t run to call for an ambulance there’s probably no hope she’ll ever get out of purgatory.

Omar finally decides that the time has come to deliver Marichuy’s baby. Thunder rolls, lightning cracks, and the ladies look stricken. This is HIGH DRAMA.

Patricio comments that Viv is a fine upstanding lady, but Ceci counters that she’s always been frivolous and selfish, and abandoned her husband and daughter. Pat says JM didn’t love Viv any more than she loved him, and hopeless romantic Ceci says he only ever loved Marichuy, and maybe their first meeting (the terrorizing encounter in the woods) was predestined because they’re meant for each other. By that logic, Purita and Loser Lech have a hot passionate future in store.

Padre Anselmo is praying (in the chapel, not the hallway!) when Clemencia runs in to fetch him to deal with the Casilda/Olga tragedy. First Isabela’s “heart problem,” now this. People, you need a doctor or paramedics for FIRST aid. The priest is, like, SECOND aid in matters of illness or injury. Nevertheless, PA is the first help on the scene. The first thing he asks is, “haven’t you called an ambulance?” No, they haven’t. PA recruits some young chaps to carry Olga to her apartment. WHEN will anyone in a telenovela EVER learn proper first aid? Would it help if we sent handbooks to the Televisa writers’ offices? Purita continues to howl. PA reassures her that her mother is still alive.

Omar the trained doctor is doing a little better with the medical necessities. He sends Mica to fetch his doctor bag and boil all the instruments for ten minutes. Then he sends Cande for alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and gauze, probably just to get her out of the room with her unhelpful crying.

Pat tells Ceci she’s just biased and romantic, thinking more existed between JM and Mari than really did. Ceci insists that she’s right, and that Viv is a horrible person who deserves to be punished, not to have back everything she walked out on once and to have another child with Juan Miguel.

Viviana looks out the window, but dashes back to the sofa when she hears JM coming. He’s going to work; she repeats that she doesn’t want Ed to pay a visit. She asks Juan Miguel if he hates her. He hesitates, but only because it’s time for a commercial break, not because he has to think about it.

Elsa watches useless Nelson sleep and remembers happier times. Her mama Luisa drops by to order her to come home, like she’s a rebellious teenager or something.

Omar has Cande pour alcohol on his hands. Then he prays and whatnot all melodramatic-like.

JM tells Viv he doesn’t hate her; he just pities her. He leaves, and Viv says to herself she would rather he felt anything passionate about her, even if it was hate. Then she says he’ll never be rid of her unless she’s dead. However, she rejects killing herself, as he’s not worth it.

Luisa thinks Nelson is also not worth either living or dying for. She tries to drag Elsa away, but Elsa insists that she can’t leave him; it would be cruel right when he’s trying to stop drinking. Nelson gets up in his filthy clothes and promises to change and begs her not to leave him. They hug. Luisa gives up.

Mayita drops by to say hi to her mama, learns that Viv isn’t feeling well, thinks Viv needs candy, then starts rummaging through the drawers. Highly authentic child-like behavior, as far as I can tell. She pulls out some of Viv’s earrings to try on, but says she likes Blanca’s better, and describes them. Viv looks thoughtful, probably remembering where she’s seen a pair like that.

Omar gives Marichuy a shot. He’s trying to speed up her dilation. More hand-sterilizing and praying.

A very pregnant Beatriz tells Elsa it’s going to be great being a mom. Elsa says if she and Nelson had a child, everything would be different. Beatriz seems to think she’s wasting her time with him, but Elsa says he wants to change. They haven’t heard from either Israel or Becky in awhile, and Ed doesn’t know that Elsa’s gone back to Nelson. Come on, ladies, at least spice up this episode with a little juicy gossip we don’t already know. You two are useless.

JM arrives home in a different shirt than he left in. Blanca wants to talk to him about something serious. She’s tired of Viv attacking her and following her every move. JM says that if a person has nothing to hide, being watched shouldn’t matter. No, Juan Miguel, being scrutinized is very annoying even if you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, especially if you’re as introverted as Blanca is. Where did he get that shrink degree? JM notes that she won’t look him in the eye, but she insists that she trusts him more than anyone else, which makes him smile and fluffs up his ego some more, so even less shrink knowledge fits in his head. He apologizes for having put off the psychological help she asked for like six months ago and asks whether she wants to go to his office soon to get going on that, but she says no and runs off.

Viv and Onelia have a pointless conversation. When Viv is alone again, she lights up a cigarette, then JM arrives and is, like, you must be feeling better, and by the way stop poisoning my imaginary baby.

Cecilia can’t sleep, possibly because an owl is staring at her from the brightly-lit trees right outside her window.

Viv wants to go back to the way things used to be between her and JM (when?!?). JM says it will never happen. He still loves Marichuy.
Ceci has fallen asleep, but wakes up screaming. She dreamed that Marichuy died. Pat comforts her.

Marichuy lies in bed asleep while her crack medical team sits around waiting for something to happen. Thunder rolls.

Ceci continues to cry.

Cande cries. A lot. Some more.

JM tells Viv yet again that Marichuy is his one true love. Viv thinks it’s despicable that he loves that nasty street urchin. JM forbids her to insult Marichuy and declares that Marichuy is Viv’s superior in every way. Viv tries to play the amnesia and pregnancy cards again.

Marichuy lies motionless in bed.

Ceci insists that her dream is real; something bad is happening to Marichuy. Pat goes to get her tranquilizers.

JM apologizes for losing his patience. He says he feels anxious and has the sensation that something terrible is happening, something he should be aware of and should be able to prevent. (Yeah, Juan Miguel, that SOMETHING terrible is this episode, and you have the power to improve it immeasurably. Pick up Eduardo and head to the gym and talk about something funny in the looker room. We’ll rejoin the others after the kid is born and the tears are over.) Viv divines that Marichuy must be having her baby, and tells herself that JM will never find out about it.

Viviana asks JM whether he’s going out that night. He says no; he’s going to go work in the library.

Ceci tries to call Padre Anselmo. The phone rings in the church hallway. Padre Anselmo is probably still out wondering whether they should get a doctor for the woman who has been knocked unconscious by a big rock.

Onelia snoops through Blanca’s room. She reports to Viv that Blanca isn’t in the house; she’s disappeared mysteriously just like the other nights. Viv plans to search her room even though everything’s locked up. Locks are no obstacle to Vile Viv.

Juan Miguel is in his study, but he can’t concentrate on his work. Probably because he doesn’t have the faintest clue how to be a psychiatrist. He daydreams about Marichuy instead and wonders where she is and if she ever thinks of him.

Ivette calls JM and says she wants to see him. He says he can’t go out; he has work to do. She insists, she must see him tonight, even for just a moment. He says he’s not in the mood. She says she’ll get him into the mood. He agrees to go.

Viv won’t tell Onelia what she’s up to, but she needs to search Blanca’s room to prove what she suspects. There are too many coincidences. She sees JM drive away and calls him a hypocrite.

JM arrives at Ivette’s creepy casa and she immediately has her hands and lips all over him, but gets no response. He says again he’s not in the mood. She says lots of men would love to be in his place right now. He says he doesn’t love her and never will. She looks angry. This is the weirdest relationship ever.

Isabela calls Amador to see if he knows anything. His hair is sticking up even more than usual.

Ivette tries to convince JM that it’s useless to try to resist her very unsexy seduction. No man has ever gotten away from her. He doesn’t know who she really is, that she… She stops talking suddenly and stares blankly. Juan Miguel can’t figure out what’s going on.

Onelia calls Viv “necia,” meaning foolish. She tries to get her to think about what she’s planning to do. I’m guessing that a woman who would fake her own death, abandon her husband and daughter, kill a man, and try to seduce her sick friend’s husband won’t be stopped from searching the nanny’s room no matter how many times she reconsiders that evil plan. Onelia would rather just fire Blanca if something funny’s going on. Viv sends her off to bed.

Ivette is finally roused from her stupor, but awakens as Blanca and is terrified and tries to hide from JM under a sofa pillow. She asks how she got to that place and why she’s wearing such tarty clothes, then thinks to herself that the demon who lives inside her must have done it. JM asks her why she called herself “la dama de los puñales” (the lady of the daggers) and why she’s acting so strangely. He begs her to tell him what’s going on, but smiles like he thinks maybe it’s a joke. She just trembles.

Amador calls Cande to find out how Marichuy’s doing, and when the baby will be born. Cande says she’s doing fine; still no baby, then hangs up fast. She says, “me cae gordo,” which is slang meaning that Amador is a pain or annoying.

JM tells Ivette she doesn’t seem like the same woman. He tries to get her to tell him what’s going on, but she runs away.

So: Tears, seven gazillion. Babies, zero.

Avances: Marichuy has her baby, at long last! Also, Ivette/Blanca catches Viv rummaging through the secret suitcase.

The best thing about this episode was your clever and hilarious recap. Thanks, Julia.

Absolutely...let me second that comment Anonymous 6:45. In fact Julia your final sentence Tears: 7 gazillion, Baby: zero was a hilarious summation.

A couple of commnents really made me smile. When Viviana asks JM if he hates her and he hesistates...but only because a commercial is coming up....
and then your suggestion for improving the episode by stashing JM and Eduardo back in the gym. Hear hear! And the fewer clothes the better.

Normally, I'm quite fond of the character Candelaria, but her constant crying and mewling during the past week has gotten on my last nerve.

I suppose the stoning of Olga was a reference to the Bible story of the stoning of the woman taken in adultery. Padre Anselmo didn't get there in time to play Christ, but at least he suggested calling an ambulance!

Julia: Great recap. Like the comments before me, I'll third the motion. Your recap was far better than this go nowhere chapter.

Candi (agreed - she is a pain in the butt)for once thought before she spilled the beans to Amador. One up for her at this point.

Thanks for the great recap, Julia. I just love your humorous comments.

I am getting tired of Vivana and her attitude towards JM, Bianca, and even her daughter, Mayita. I don't believe she is pregnant really. She is making excuses to going into see Eduardo. She doesn't belong with JM. I personally want her out of that house. Someone should kill her or something.

Hopefully, we will see Marichuy will give birth in the next night or so. She has been having contractions for a few days now. I wonder if it will be a boy or girl.

Gnevieve

Thanks for the recap Julia. I agree with the others it was hilarious (unlike the episode).

Genevieve - based on the plot summary we know that dear Viv will meet her maker. The exciting question is who will do the deed since we know she can't leave too early or JM and Mari could get together.

Great recap, Julia. I for one thought that JM could not stifle his laughter during that scene with simpering Bianca.

Purita gets a 10 on Ferro's ugly crying scale.

Yesterday, Bianca was thought-bubbling that she would have to kill Viv.

Did I hear correctly that Amador called Isabela "tia"?

I still don't know the connection between Leopardo and Ivette. Was she married to him? Then she had some trauma and split her personality? I have been reading most of the recaps when I missed the shows, but I don't remember this.

NinaK-nobody knows the connection between Leo and Ivette, YET! He just mentioned her name one night while crying on the steps of the hacienda if I recall.

Yes, Amador did call that horrible woman, Tia. It's been so nice without her being on recent episodes, hasn't it?

Julia, I don't have much new to add to the accolades of your fine talent in humorous writing but thanks from me too for elevating this whiny, crying jag episode. I did like the melt down of Blanca to almost Ivette and later Ivette to almost Blanca. Funny how the great psychiatrist Juan Miguel is totally clueless in both instances about what he sees displayed in plain sight. He also misses Vivianas great acting job to play the madonna victim. I wonder if she somehow faked the pregnancy tests or did we ever see her in a passion scene with anyone else? We only have her word that she had sex with the drunken or drugged JM. I'm sure something fishy will come out of this.

We know that Omar/Leo and Ivette were involved, and that he blames her for destroying his life, but I'm not sure whether that's because she delayed him in helping the mother and baby who died, or for other reasons.

I also thought JM was just trying not to laugh at Ivette. He also seemed like he was laughing at Viv earlier. Maybe William Levy was having giggle fits that day.

I truly do not understand why JM keeps seeing Ivette. He knows that she only wants one thing, yet he keeps going over to her place and sitting there insisting that they can have no romantic relationship while she slithers on him. What an idiot.

I don't get the JM/Ivette scenes either. She is all over him and he just sits there talking about his love for MC. What a riot! Everytime she says "Jean Michel" I have to laugh.

Julia, thanks for the stellar recap, you slay me ;)

I think I must stand corrected on my Viv getting poisoned theory. She’s obviously faking. As for the baby, I can only think of two things: 1) she found herself a doppelganger (not easy to do last minute, especially a pregnant one, but doable as long as Ed didn’t ask for a physical description) or 2) she found a pregnant woman and got herself a proxy urine sample. A similar device was used on DB. Either that or she found herself a lover somewhere.

RE Ivette and Leo – So far I’ve pieced this together: Blanca says her sister (not sure if she was a twin or just a sister) committed suicide over a man. This is what led Blanca to her split personality (not sure if the sister was named Ivette and that’s the personality she got, and added the accent or just an avenging angel she made up) and for her alter ego to take revenge on men in general by enamoring them and destroying them. She and Leo were a couple (I don’t think they made it to an engagment), and it’s possible she even loved him (Ivette has told JM that she was on love once, but she destroyed him). As Julia mentions. Leo tells Cande that Ivette romanced/cajoled Leo to stay with her long after he should have left to assist in a delivery, and both mother and child died of complications (hence his decision to give up medicine and his fear in delivering Mari’s baby). Then Ivette disappeared and moved on to her next victim. I think this is what destroyed him. It wasn’t until then that he discovered she’d been going around destroying men as some sort of sick sport. Obviously our girl ran out of victims where she lived and has since moved on to the DF to find a new crop, thus finding JM.

I also tend to think Viv got her hands on a positive pregnancy lab slip somehow. She is a devious little thing. No way is she pregnant!

ur recap made this boring show hilarious. something new needs to finally happen it's like they're just making episodes full of fluff. that scene with Olga was hard to watch wth is wrong with those people? and is everyone too dumb to call an ambulance?

that comment about Purita having the ugly cry was funny too

i felt like William Levy was a good actor in the beginning, but is it just me or does he seem to not act as well anymore? his posing and cliche-d dramatic expressions and speech... maybe it's just a bad script lately?

Maybe JM does his best acting when he is in scenes with Mari...I'm sure those scenes will be coming!!

JM and Mari need to reconnect soon--the show just isn't the same without their sizzling chemistry!

It's tough to watch these episodes where EVERY scene is a downer. Something happy needs to happen! I hope Mari's baby is born on Friday, because I can't take much more of this drawn-out she-might-die nonsense. Obviously she's not going to die; she's the star of the show.

Outstanding Julia – loved it!

For those of you who have read the summary: Please have mercy on those of us (maybe it’s just me!) who don’t read those summaries because we want to be surprised. It’s not really a spoiler if it’s in the summary, I know, but for me it takes some of the fun out of it if I know what’s going to happen next or later.

Does anyone else think the idea of having your husband’s best friend as your ob/gyn has a major yuck factor? Would you want to get up in the stirrups for someone you knew socially?

Those were some amazing storm/flood shots. You’d think it would be on the news in Mexico City and that Padre A and Amador would have the sense to worry. Also, I wonder how far the hacienda is from the city and if it’s far, why they didn’t put Mari up in town since they knew she was about to pop.

Funny re-cap, thanks!

Viv smoking has tipped us off 'fer-sure' that she's faking the pregnancy. She can't get away with this charade for long as JM is obviously on to her as he went after her with the suggestion that Eduardo come to the house to examine her. I agree that it's yucky and innnapropriate for him to be treating her anyway.

BTW,I also thought it was weird and innapropriate for him to be treating whats-her-name, then taking her out as freinds, then coming on to her. What is it with these men? Maybe they should just stick to the gym.

Oh the co-dependent Elsa! I'm torn because on one hand I like the idea of her finding true love and happiness with a starving artist type outside her own social class, but on the other hand this rescuing thing can be fraught with so much danger to oneself!

I was thinking about the owl. (I know, I know, why am I thinking about any of this??!!) Yet another animal motif to represent something going on in the story. So I'm thinking the owl represented intuition, prophecy or something as it appeared as Cecilia was having her premonitions. Someone suggested an allusinon to St. Francis and the stories of St. Francis with animals. Kind of cool I guess.

Thank you Julia. Well done.

I know this TN was written for JM and MC to ultimately be together, but I have to say that the more I watch it, the more I have to ask, what are JM's redeeming qualities that make me want our heroine MC to end up with this goober. First of all, he is not very bright. He is clueless about everything that is going on around him. He spends every night with Ivette, but has no clue she is Blanca. The witch he is married to sees Ivette one time, and already is pretty sure she is Blanca and that she is messing round with her husband. Also, there Blancette is having a total psychotic meltdown before his eyes and he stands there saying, "what's wrong - you seem different." Duh! Come on Juan Mi! Pull some psychoanalysis magic out of your little black medical bag and figure this thing out.

I too ask, what is his reason for running to Ivette every night to have her slither around leaving a slimy trail all over him while he professes to love another. Not only is he not faithful to his wife, he is not faithful to the mistress of his heart. I think he could benefit from some psychoanlysis himself.

And just when we thought he was about to grow a spine, he slumped back into the lair of the two predators who rule his castle and he is not likely to figure out what they are up to for quite some time. Then there is that little issue he seems to have with alcohol where he loses his mind, which led him to attack MC, and to end up in bed with Viv with no recollection of how he got there or what he did while he was there. And, oh yes, he has been known to slap a woman or two around. He has done nothing to actively search for MC other than go ask Padre. Maybe Amadork is the one who should have gone to medical school, because he is obviously smarter. And why is JM not suspicious of all the time that Moo-Steffa spends with his wife or curious about what they a might be cooking up together? He knows neither of them has any love for MC. Maybe he should hypnotize Moo-Steffa to find out what she knows. He's not that great a father either. He has put his child in the care of someone he knows nothing about who is clearly timid and becomes discombobulated beyond reason, but that's not a problem for him.

I don't know. I am really just frustrated with JM right now. He is definitely easy to look at, but that wind I hear is between his ears. Sorry JM lovers. Right now, though I know it won't happen, I am rooting for Leo. And thank goodness Leo finally ordered someone to boil water!

Happy New Year!

lol i agree with everyone. I think it was just a really really bad idea for the writers to make him an apparently ridiculously successful Psychoanalyst. he doesn't pull it off and it doesn't go with his character to have the kind of wit to be a psychoanalyst. he should've just been a rich businessman haha. it just makes it seem stupid that the psychoanalyst would have no clue about Blanca/Ivette, Viv, or Steff. it's very frustrating. he's gonna have to fight his butt off for MC from Leo.

I think it's weird that all this time passed by and JM hasn't been looking for MC, although i do remember that when she first left he didn't want to find her because he thought he didn't deserve her. but dang forget that now JM!

I didn't really like Leo in the beginning but I'm really liking his softer side that's come out these past few episodes. now there's a man in his element! he seems like a really good doctor who's very haunted by his past mistake; unlike JM who's making dumb psychoanalysis failures every episode lol.

I know my moniker is JMLover but i'm rethinking that now too lol but i guess for the sake of continuity...

i think the reason why Juan Miguel is such a wealthy "psychoanalyst" is he probably charges by the hour and by the time he guesses what's wrong with his patients he's rich cha-ching! haha just had to add that!!

Interesting comments everyone. And Randy, of course you should think about the owl! Even though we make fun of the writing of these telenovelas, the people who put them together obviously like to throw in visual symbolic clues (along with the music cues as to what to feel) And I agree...the owl seems to signify premonition, wisdom beyond just the "here and now" and warning. I believe in some cultures hearing an owl hoot can presage a death. And of course we're supposed to worry about Marichuy dying even though we KNOW she won't.

And I agree with everyone who is totally annoyed with JM's mental density. I found myself focusing on his incredibly sculted behind in those scenes with Ivette just because what was going on up top was so clueless (awright...that wasn't the only reason...man! is he put together nicely or what!?)

In total agreement with everyone about JuanMi's denseness. For a few episodes there it seemed like the wizard was finally going to give him a brain, and then...no. I'm still not convinced he's really successful as a shrink, though...I think his money in inherited and he just plays doctor for fun. Although, as I've mentioned before, maybe his practice focuses on those who just want to stare at him for fifty minutes to feel better, not people with actual mental illnesses. Well, it will be interesting to see how he finally redeems himself. Right now Amador is almost more appealing.

Marti, I love "Moo-Steffa." Very clever.

JudyB and Randy – yes, there is an old Mexican saying that goes “cuando el tecolote canta, el indio muere” = When the owl sings, the Indian dies. It could certainly be an ominous sign of death (though we don’t have any pure-blooded Indians here, most Mexicans are Mestizos with a little Indian blood in them). It could signal a death is coming, though it probably won’t be that of our lead. Heroes and heroines have been killed off before, but it’s usually not until the last episode, so I don’t foresee Mari being the victim.

As for having an ob that you see socially, someone once pointed out that sometimes you don’t have a choice (small towns without a lot of doctors) but that certainly isn’t the case in the DF! I would be completely uncomfortable being examined by someone I just had dinner and drinks with, but some folks find that sort of thing reassuring. To each their own I guess.

I was trying to think of doctors I would be ok seeing socially (no reflection on any that I actually see) and came up with the following:

chiropractor
dentist (but not an oral surgeon that would put me under)
allergist
podiatrist

Doctors I could NEVER see socially:

OBGyn
Internist/GP
Gastroenterologist
Psychotherapist (or psychologist)
Urologist
Eye, Ear, nose & throat dr.
Dermatologist (unless they only dealt with my face)
Any surgeon that had to put me under.

Not sure how I would feel about my kid's pediatrician, but that one would probably be ok.

Oh, regarding Mari getting stuck for delivery - I think the plan was to take her to the nearest town hospital when the time came. It just never occurred to them that the birth and a flood would happen at the same time.

Actually, I meant to put the Eye, ear, etc doctor on the ok pile, unless they had to put me under for surgery. I would just wonder if I did anything weird while I was under or if they saw me drool and that would always bother me.

Something that I never understood...were JM and Ivette hooking up and it was just never shown? She seemed very comfortable rubbing all over him and trying to kiss him, while all he says in response is that he's not in the mood tonight. I know he's told her that he would never love her due to Marichuy, but I wonder if this scene was supposed to imply that he and Ivette were physically intimate? Yuck!
