Tontas no van wed 1/7 - Peace, Love, and more lies without videotape

Wow, I had a long hiatus...so busy before the holidays, and then no shows during. Well that worked out just fine. Hope you all have a happy New year. I was asked about the Roscas and I have something for you I'll post in the morning, so check back...

OK here you are. This is my name sake for the last year so I have a special affinity for it. You can see it in my blog image too....

For those of you who don't know, 1/6 is the Epiphany, and known as the Day of Kings, Dia de Reyes and celebrates the three kings visit to the baby Jesus in the manger that you always see in the nativity. More info is here in an article ironically written by "Oscar Reyes"...this is also the traditional day for children to receive their presents. We went to the store to see about trying one of their Roscas when we were met with this line (hard to see but easily 80 -100 people all the way to the back of the store) and an announcement that the bakers were working really hard and the next batch would be ready in about 40 minutes. Caray! But the people waited....we decided to go home and make another one instead....I don't have a pic of ours... but here's actually Wikipedia has some great information about the various iterations of this delight and traditions that accompany it...

NO ROSCAS ON THE SHELF
....WAITING FOR THE BAKERS TO FINISH

At the 60’s fest Charly is nervous that Lu’s Unc and Grandma will see them together. Lu isn’t worried about this prospect though, she thinks they’ll get along well and shoves a sandwich in his mouth. Wish I thought of that a couple of times.

The little kids, best actors in the show, are on the stage trying to get each other to dance, but Chava is staying there with his perrito. Roci says he has to dance with his novia so give the dogs to Beto

Jaime shows up and Izzy loves his costume. He too is worried About running into her son. She says it’s a night of peace and love and no one will get angry. She runs off to put on her costume.

The ladies talk about the impending performance and Candi remarks that dr plastic will take any chance he can get to act like a clown. Then she apologizes remembering peace and love.

Tio summons happiness to come. Venga Allegria

Ok our mineral water band Agua mineral looks more like an eighties heavy metal band to me. Maybe they were going for the Kiss look, but heck, that was more 70’s, no? Not sixties....but ok, whatever.

Johnny Laboriel comes on stage to get the party hoppin’.

He announces Joan Baez and John Lennon (Izzy and Jaime) who will sing the ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti. They lip sync to this bizarre choice of songs in English.

Tina warns Donato that Madam will scream to high heaven when she sees him. He doesn’t care.
Ma shows up at Alicia’s who thought she was in the DF. Ali wonders why she’s here she manages to get to talk to Pat and asks him how he’s been feeling in light of the anniversary day. He thinks he saw Candi. She says thinks or did? He responds Candi’s dead. She says she sees her and Vero everyday too.

Donato shows up and angers the peacemonger because he is apparently playing the wrong music, or something. I didn’t exactly get the extent of his offense. He claims he is Mick Jagger and she accuses him of being from the 50’s.

Charly and Jaime go to get the band saying that they have to come out and sing to break up a problem. Of course Santi wonders who these two are. He questions that they are both "friends" of the women in his life.

Ma having done her best to perpetuate Candi’s lie goes to leave, Ali wants to send her by chauffeur to her hotel but Ma refuses that she’s staying with a friend. Ali of course is extremely suspicious of all this and doesn’t want to let Ma go. She follows her out the door.

Fiesta of paz turns a little rocky...

While our peace and lovster continues to argue with her help the band comes out playing, yes what I still would call 80’s rock and the attention turns to them. Santi slides all over the stage and is pretty acrobatic for a while until there is a pause. The crowd agrees by their silence that he looks quite goofy. He says they haven’t played for so long. They try to shake it up with He hey hey fabit albubert I guess it works because they keep singing about horrifying tacos. Fun stuff.

Alicia and Ma end up at the restaurant. Zamora is there and Ali wants to know where Meno is. Ma is trying to get Zamora to disappear but this bright bulb doesn’t get the hint.

Zamora says Meno went to the festival with Candy, but Ali says Candy is dead. Zam begins to mourn her. Ma tells her he means Candido the boyfriend of Meno, and well, they say Candi for short because you know those types like to be called women’s names. She tells Ali he’s a relative so he’s upset.

The crowd begs for more Mineral Water but instead gets a completely unrelated ballad called Nadie se va a marchar, a Jaime Camil song. Paula sent me the words and translation, so here you have them. This from his latest album.

o..=======Nobody is going to go away
So life doesn’t weigh you down so much
I’ll pack a suitcase w/ your disappointments
And send it on a trip far away
So that pains don’t cloud your sky.
So your laughter shines anew
I’ll paint your afternoons a deep blue
tie a ray of sunshine in your hair
so you don’t fear the cold in winter
ChorusTo explain that I want you so much
And I can’t stand to see you cry
Let me show you that life is good
And it's never too late to dream
You know that I’m staying
and tomorrow I’ll do it again.
I’m not going to deceive you.
So your doubts open your path
and your heart follows your destiny
I’ll give you a night in the center of the world
so you can enjoy every second
So the pieces of your soul are put back together
I’ll build your house within my embrace
And we’ll stay there nights and days
And it won’t matter what life brings us
ChorusThe storm will pass and moon will rise
And you will be with me, with me.

Santi tells Candi he wrote the song especially for her it’s not a cover. IN this conversation he tells her he wants to make love with her and she says yeah except that’s something he already does with his girlfriend. This converation was just weird, but anyway he gets it out that the song is all about her and his love for her. I’m thrilled if I’m Marissa right now. She comes over and of course gets told the song was for her. Blech. He also tells her he has to keep an eye on his alcoholic bandmates.

Zamora tells Tono about Candi’s unfortunate passing.

Santi and Mr. Raul are having breakfast and Santi is telling him to leave Candi alone because he will only suffer. Raul isn’t stupid he says he knows Santi likes her but he is also dating his sister. He says that she wants nothing to do with men because one treated her badly once. He just reminds him to forget her and makes like a hypnotist. Raul smashes his hand away but Santi tells him it works for Tony Kamo.

A funeral wreath shows up from Zamo and Tono to the house. Meno wonders who they killed now. Little does he know.

Tono is sad because Candi was the love of his life. They reminisce about her agreeing to sing a song in her honor over her coffin.

Candi and Sole have a chat and Sole promises not to give up Candi’s game to Pat. Sole worries more about Ali. Candi is surpised she knows her and hears about when she came to offer Sole money to stay away from Pat. Sole thinks he’s an ok guy. Candi asks if she loves him. She doesn’t know but Candi says you always know. Sole then rightly asks her about the doc. Candi reminds her that Pat slept with Sole while they were novios. Sole didn’t know and didn’t care. Anyway, Candi says she can’t get him out of her head and Sole wonders if she is in love with him again. Candy leaves.

Ma leaves a note she’s gone back to the DF. Pat’s on the way to work but Ali stops him and wonders if Candi walked through the door right now if he would drop her He tells her not to make him answer questions he’d have to lie about.

Candy and Santi argue again. This time she’s miffed because he goes into the building without adressing her. Blah blah....talk about needing a psychiatriast. He ends that she pretends to tell the whole world how to be a women when she doesn’t even know how to be one herself. Yep.

Pat stops by to tell Sole that his parents want to meet their grandson. She agrees that would be good. He likes Sole’s perfume and remarks that his former wife wore it. He tells that he is widowed, but lately it seems like his wife is following him around everywhere. Sole smiles uncomfortably.

Meno brings the wreath to the restaurant. Just then Ali yells for Meno and wants to know what’s up. He’s a little impactado.

This was great, a funeral march toward the restaurant with Zam and Tono and the hearse in tow.
Meno stalls while the music plays. Tio points out Tono as Candido, a special friend. She says he has the face of a candido. She’s done so she leaves and gets some condolence hugs on the way out.
Tono gives Meno condolences but he breaks a hug to smack him in the face and ask what the stupid ones are doing.

Back to Santi and Candi arguing as usual about what mens’ favorite activities are about, sex, friends and soccer.

The mariachi/waiters tell them the girl told them of Candi’s death. Meno tells them they should check with him first. He wonders about the bill for all of this. Zam says it cost him nothing so Meno thanks Tono, but he says he paid neither. Turn out it was all put in Meo’s name. He asks to borrow Zamo’s guitar who wonders if he’s going to play, no, he’s going to chase them away and beat them over the head with it.

Isabel isn’t sure if Jaime should meet with Santi. He wants to, but Izzy isn’t sure that he can handle it. She yells at Donato for being nosy. He replies he’s a butler, he can’t be unnosy.

Candi now asks what he thinks of women, he goes on about wanting them in a box called a house and that they don’t think or anything just that they yell every onve in a while. Nice. She notes he’s afraid of love. She says this isn’t him, she didn’t kiss a man who is angry at women, she kissed a man who knows how to love women. He says look, he sees only Candi despite being associate with Marissa, his girlfriend everything brings him back to Candi.

Ma saved the day with Pat tand Ali telling about the "Candido" friend.

Candy looks at her computer and asks for Ma to leave her alone. Ma calls her bipolar and she says look who’s talking.

Candi and Pat chat on line. He knows the picture wasn’t her, and that he doesn’t want to play games about seeing her anymore. He tells her story of their anniversary, and he hasn’t been able to forget her. He’s not good company today.

Pat gets a call from Ali She is outside of Meno’s house waiting for her Ma, she doesn’t believe Ma went back to the DF so she is waiting there. So of course she’s drinking her coffe and doing god knows what else when Candy with Chava come outside and stand right within view of Ali’s car.....

Thank you for the recap, Kris. Fun stuff!

You're right about Santi's band. Four of the Abandonados, Santi, Ed, Raul, and Hector had a band back when they were in school, so it would've been an 80s rock band. They revived it for the party.

Monday I said I like two of Camil's songs. One is Maleta, and now I can say that the other is Nadie se va a marchar. The link is for a Mother's Day Concert from last May, and Camil sang the entire song. In tonight's show we only see a chopped up version of it.

I was thinking today, how many photos play an important role in this show:
1. Pat sees Candy's photo at Meño's
2. Suegrita swipes Pat's childhood photo, and Pat later sees it at Meño's
3. Santi Photoshop's himself posing in a Speedo in the Zoccolo
4. Ali throws Candy's photo and carving in the dumpster
5. Candy sends Lulu's photo to Pat
6. Vicki thinks her e-date will look like the photo of Sebastian Rulli.
7. Candy gives Chava a photo of a guy purported to be his dad, and Chava proudly shows it to anyone who will listen
8. Ali draws all over Santi's photo when she's mad at him
9. Santi has his family's photos on his cabinet, but leaves Mar's in the drawer when she's not around.
10. Santiago's dad's portrait is a focal point of the room, watching his family from "above."

Notice how many of the photos are part of a deception?

Oops. Here is the link. Nadie se va a marchar

Good Morning "K"...thanks for that fun recap, you had quite a lively episode! And I really enjoyed the link to Johnny Laboriel...he's a new one for me.

For some reason the link to Tony didn't work for me but I'll look him up when I have time.

Once again I was in and out of the tv room and missed a lot so I beholden to you, partner, for filling in the gaps.

Thanks, Fuego~~~I only catch a few minutes of this novela, but I did feel a connection to it when Pat and Candy were at the harbor and they showed the Noprwegian Spirit ...that's the cruise ship that my daughter was married on in September.

Well, looked up Tony Kamo and it was very interesting. I've only been hypnotized once (in a medical setting) and it was very effective. Would certainly not want to do it as part of a show though!

Terrific recap Kris, thank you. Agree with you that: "The little kids, best actors in the show..."

Paula, very insightful comments about the photos.

Candy has thus far skillfully avoided direct contact with Pat. One of the highlights of this telenova would have been to see Candy and Pat run into one another to see what their initial, honest reactions would have been. However, Ali finding out that Candy is definitely alive (which appears will happen tonight) will change the dynamics of the inevitable first Candy/Pat meeting.

I also think Pat and Candy belong together. They started out together, made (and are still making) major missteps along the way but have a chance to rectify many mistakes by reuniting as a family with Chava. Diana in MA

I think maybe Pat + Candy is a good idea after all, too. But then who does Santiago end up with? He doesn't seem to have much of a future with Marissa. Any chance he'll fall in love with an ugly girl?

The band reminded me of Spinal Tap. Funnily enough Meester Raul looked pretty good in his eighties getup except for the horrible pants.

Isabel and Donato have had this running feud about who is better, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. Isabel bought a Sargento Pimiento (Sgt Pepper) costume for him to wear to the party but he showed up as Mick Jagger instead. Hence he was in hot water.

Diana makes a good point with Candy and Patricio. Clearly they can't seem to get each other out of their heads after all this time. The question now is are they in love with their dreams of each other or with the real people? It will be interesting to see their inevitable encounter and the results of such.

Kris, such a funny and entertaining recap as usual. You are a delight amiga! I can't wait to see our special treat of the Rosca de Reyes.

Julie, regarding the pairings I also don't see Santiago and Marissa ending up together. I still think he and Candy must unite; maybe after she gets back with Patricio she will be disillusioned by her past love as so often happens. But Santi has got to break it off with Marissa before he legitimately pursues Candy, no woman in her right mind would explore a relationship with him while he is still deeply involved with Marissa. Oh wait, Candy's not really in her right mind, is she? Somehow I think Patricio and Soledad could end up together. He's such a sad soul but he really perks up when he's around that kid. Wouldn't it be fantastic if some hunk showed up on the program and fell in love with Lulu? She's such a cutie.

By the way, didn't Marissa look fantastic at the party? Wow, that girl's got some figure!

Hello everyone - I haven't been watching for a couple weeks but I just caught up on the recaps. I'm so angry, I deleted all my recordings (including this one) last night and now I wish I had it to watch the party. I'll have to try and find it on youtube.

Thanks to everyone for all the great recaps, I feel like I haven't missed a thing.

My daughter was born 12/31, I still haven't gotten any sleep. She is an angel, she doesn't fuss or cry unless she needs something, but she has day and night backwards. Sleeps all day, up all night. I suspect it's because all day long she is being held and hugged by her abuelos from Mexico so she is all comfy and warm and sleepy, maybe when they go home she'll get her day and night straight. Thanks to everyone for all the congrats and well wishes you sent last week.

Wow, what a fun episode and what a fun recap as well. I was not a big fan of John Bass (I succumbed to Judy Collins' beautiful voice and deep blue eyes instead). I too thought that song was a curious choice. The mixup over Candi"s death was hilarious. Kris, my Spanish profesora brought Rosca de Reyes on Tuesday, and the first cut was right into the baby Jesus. It really was a nifty treat. Carlos

Ferro, if you look for it on YouTube, it's Cap 22. Although it's US Cap 24, the US cap's have shifted from the MX cap's.

Thanks Paula! I was going to have to dig around but you saved me the trouble. You're doing a great job recapping too, I must say. Great group on this show, you and Hombre certainly made the right choice to join in, you both do a great job.

I agree that the band looked and sounded sort of late 80's, reminded me of Van Halen (not as good, tho:) The guitar solo sounded like that, too. But of course, that would make sense, given Santi, Ed and Raul's age in the show.

Paula, I definitely think you've hit on something with the photos. Candy's Institute is trying to help women with their image, and the photos are all images. The irony is that Candy talks about authenticity, when many of the photos are not authentic.

Loved watching the sixties dances. I remember we had names for lots of them, such as the swim, the jerk, the mashed potato. Can't remember if there was a name for the one where you put your fingers in a vee in front of your eyes. There were so many dances with names back then that there was even a song called Land of 1000 Dances!

Chris: Congratulations to you and your entire family! I'm so happy for you. Glad you posted, I know many of us have been thinking about you.

Cap'n Sylvia: Excellent point about Candy and Pat: "The question now is are they in love with their dreams of each other or with the real people? It will be interesting to see their inevitable encounter and the results of such."

I do hope they have the opportunity to at least see if they can build a future together. Pat has 2 wonderful sons and I don't think he and Soledad are a real match. It would be a shame if he couldn't be a live-in father to at least one of them. Parenting may be his best quality. Diana in MA

Chris, I just re-read your comment which says you posted your new daughter's arrival last week. I was away and not sure how but I missed it. Please aceept my belated but sincere congratulations. Diana in MA

Diane - now that I think back I didn't post it, I shared it with the crew here via e-mail. You didn't miss it. Thanks for the congrats! I'm as excited as someone who hasn't slept in a week can be.

Julie, I don't see Santiago with any of the present characters. I think if he were "really into" Candy, he would not still be with Marissa.

I don't buy Santiago's procrastination by rationalizing his daughter calls Marissa "mom" and that it would be too complicated business-wise to end his romantic relationship with her. I think he likes the idea of being in love but isn't ready (at least yet) to do what it takes to achieve it. Diana in MA

Thanks for the recap. Ferro~Congratulations . My younger daughter also had her days and nights turned around. She slept a lot during the day, but by 10 at night she was restless and crying. After being home alone all day with her and her 2 year old sister, I used to hand her over to her daddy [who was often still in his softball uniform] and say, ''Here, you try to calm her down.'' And, he always did...often by humming ''The Marine Hymn'' to her . It will all work itself out. I vote for Candy ending up with Pat. Santi could get his son's mommy or Alicia [Yikes.]

Ferro...have thought so much about you and your family and so glad you posted in today.

It's not the grandparents fault the baby sleeps during the day. (You're going to want them back when they leave, believe me).

Your wife was moving around during the day, so the baby in utero was rocked to sleep. At night when your wife was asleep, baby woke up and moved around. So as far as your wee one is concerned, you folks are the ones who have your days and nignts mixed up!

This too shall pass...but the first few months are really rocky. We feel for you! And once again send all our love and congratulations!

Whatever decade it was from, The Blinging of the Band was one of the funniest sequences I've ever seen. Especially the pistol-shaped belt buckle that Santi later pretended to shoot Candy with.

Thanks for the excellent recap; sometimes even when I've watched the whole show I have no idea what's going on but you cleared up a lot.

I don't like the idea of Candi getting back together with Pat. She's definitely making her share of mistakes, but he's no good. He cheated on her twice before they were married - once with Soledad just a month before the wedding, and then with the prostitute that his friends bought him who turned out to be Candi's sister. Recently he cheated on Alicia with Soledad - the guy's is just a cheater period.

He goes on and on about how he still loves Candi, blah, blah, blah, but he has no problem having sex with other women in the meantime.

Diana, you said, "I don't buy Santiago's procrastination" (of dumping Mar). Tontas' plot development is weak, and this is one of the main places it simply breaks down.

He's crazy in love with Candy and can't have her, he knows she's falling for him, Candy has made it obvious that the biggest obstacle is the presence of Mar, and Santi doesn't like Mar anymore. The only way he would not dump Mar is if he's: A. too weak to face Mar, which he's not; B. too stupid to realize that keeping Mar loses him Candy, which he's not; or C. too arrogant to give up having too women, which he's not. There is no credible reason. I think we just need to put on our Cd. Serdan beanies on this question.

YES!!!!! SPINAL TAP!!!! EXACTLY!!!! You always nail it Cap'n!!

"But mine goes to 11..." :)

So Carlos, did you make that first cut? Are you inviting us all for tamales??? :) wink, wink!!

The one we made we didn't have a baby for, but we made one this weekend and shared it with our friends and we had to use a black gatito (from Zeller Scwartz Katze wine - don't ask...) instead. One person was cutting for everyone and it ended up unclear who was supposed to have that slice. We may have to draw straws instead for the tamales!!

Interesting photo notes Paula.

I noticed the Norwegian Spirit too Susan Lynn forgot to include that somehow....how cool that was the one your daughter was married on. I know someone I know has been on that ship as well but I can't remember who at this point....

Oh and posted the Rosca story. I'll try to get a pic of ours and post it as well. It must have been in another camera I don't have today...

PS there is a recipe in one of the links...not the one we used but one you can try if you want...

I fixed the Tony Kamo link...it's pretty dramatic

That party scene had a ton of charm in it especially, as has been pointed out, with those little kids. I really feel for them. They are all hurting in some way with missing parents but have forged a sweet little alliance of their own. In 20 years we'll probably have a novela with the three of them bickering over who gets the girl. LOL

I don't see Pat and Candy at all in then end. He was her teenage love and therefore holds a special place in her heart. The way she found out about his cheating froze her in that adoring frame and she hasn't wanted to or bothered to grow up and move on. When she does I'm sure she will remember, he is a serial cheater and will look to the warmer more sensitive Santi. (For what it is worth I find there was/is little chemistry between Valentine and Jackie which is probably not too surprising because they were a big item years ago).

Soledad is getting on my nerves a bit. She like Candy seems to enjoy being a victim. She knew Pat was married when she salept with him for the second time, as she is herself, and didn't let it bother her so perhaps in the end the two cheats will end up together and poor Jorge will be left out in the cold.

Nice carch with the photos. That is very clever writing to have an ongoing motif that holds things together.

Thanks for the Rosca pics and explanation Fuego. The French do something like that too. Being raised Presbyterian is totally boring in comparison with all the wonderful Catholic rituals and Saints' days and Guardian Angels and what have you....

Oh and I agree with whoever said Raul looked better than usual in the band...I liked his hair!

Yes Judy, exactly, the tradition originated with the French (well really like the southern France, Northern Spain border area).

Anyone living near or influenced by Louisiana also knows a form of this tradition, though typically the "king cakes" are a little different recipe from those typically made in Mexico, and tend to come out around Mardi Gras instead of the Epiphany...those are delicious too and I am going to make one like that later! Yum!!

If these kids come back in 20 years with their own novela, here's what it will be.

Santi and Candy got married, so Chava and Rocío grew up together. She was vulnerable because her mother rejected her. Chava was always at her side to comfort her, so she grew emotionally dependent upon him. They remained novios, and Roc is certain that he's her one and only, her Super-Chava, and they'll marry one day.

But Chava, remember, likes to have lots of girlfriends, while stringing her along. When they grow up he takes over Pat's family business (he fought tooth and claw against Beto for control of it), and falls hopelessly in love with Hortensia's daughter, his ugly assistant.

Aye, Rocía!

Fabulous recap Kris. I think you may be giving our linkmeister Paula a run for her money ;) I missed the first few minutes of this one, but with the mess on the numbering of epis on YouTube versus how they show them here, I’m afraid I’ll end up ahead again. It was nice to hear it from you and not feel left out ;) I take it Johnny Laboriel didn’t sing. I saw him in the audience and wondered if he had. He’s pretty good, and I hadn’t heard him in ages!

Paula, Kris is catching up, but you’re still the linkmeister ;) Thanks for the “Nadie se va a marchar” link. You’re also the listmeister! Interesting points about the near misses and the photos.

Oh, Donato was not only dressed as Mick Jagger (though he looked more like one of the Ramones or the Sex Pistols than Mick Jagger), he was carrying a boom box playing Rolling Stones music.

Welcome back Ferro ;) Glad to hear the munchkin is behaving, and hope she gets her schedule gets fixed real soon so you guys can get some sleep! I bet JudyB’s right about the baby getting rocked in the morning, etc. They do tend to be more active when their mothers are trying to sleep!

Loved the “20 years later scenario.” So far there hasn’t been a love triangle with the children, but ya never know.

The other thing I thought was funny was when Candy called Santi a "rato de dos patos" (which he did not deserve, imo). I was hoping she'd get sauced and sing the song, like Luciana in Guapos.

Just read that Candy and Pat were novios in real life for a while. Interesting....

I meant "rata." I can't type.

LOL, Paula... I wish there was a way to warn poor Rocio!

Actually, I have to say I think Julie was the original linkmeister. All of my linking (or anything other than just typing, really) skills were learned from her waaayy back in La Fea days. Paula is definitely more generous with the links though, for sure!

Hysterical assessment of the children's future novio traumas Paula...

I totally see it....

I forgot too, thanks for the fun links and the pictures too. I listened to Laboriel on your link and he was truly rock and roll! I'm going to make that cake, it sounds delish. I don't have any babies but I do have a mini pig and since you used a gatito I think it'll be OK to use a little piggie.

Oh, and I forgot to say that in Scandinavian cultures we put an almond in the Christmas dessert (traditionally rice pudding but any dessert will do) and the recipient is supposed to get married or have good luck or something like that in the new year. My sis and I are into instant gratification so we just give the recipient a gift.
