Las Tontas - Thurs 3/12 - Nobody escapes the anvil...

Yesterday:
Patricio finds the boys trying to work for their money. "Dad, would you like your windshield cleaned?"
Raul grows weary of Mariloca's foul plot.
Santi tells Zamoro that his friend's diagnosis is very serious and he needs counseling because it appears his friend has HIV.

Today:
Pato brings the boys to their moms at the institute; the kids were working in the street, why? (Does Pato infer that the moms were busy at work when they should have been looking after the kiddies?) They were trying to earn money to help Tio Meño! Ahhhh... the moms are proud but they gently scold the boys. Tio cries, hugs the boys and asks, how much did you make?

Suddenly Meño is at Santi's office. Santi called him there to discuss Zamoro who has worriesome test results. He doesn't know if they were Zamora's or not but they confirmed the subject is HIV-Positive. Meño is muy impactado.

Candy's having a pow-wow with the Instituto ladies. She and Mariloca are no longer friends but they have agreed to work together. Alicia shows up to apologize to Candy...she says. The ladies look doubtful.

Gregoria is on phone harassing somebody. She's calling calling calling to enter some sort of contest.

Candy tells Alicia she doesn't believe anything she says. Al sneers that Candy enjoys hurting her. Candy retorts "You destroyed my life. I should forgive you?" Al insults Candy; she always had to be the best Little Miss Perfect. If Al could go back in time she'd do the same thing all over, she'd steal Pat because he's the love of her live. Well that was some apology Alicia.

Meño's freaking out and Santi tries to calm him down. He's not sure the test results were Zamoro's but HIV can be fought with information and condoms. He says this over and over, OK we get it.

Over at the restaurant Zamora gives the results to Candy. They are Charly's and he's HIV positive. What are they going to do? Zamora needs to give the results to Charly but Candy grabs the papers and says she'll tell him. Meño walks up and they try to maintain but their faces give it away. Meño, thinking the test results are for Zamora, presses Candy for an explanation but she doesn't give it up.

Sven and Ole stand behind a customer and discuss the use of condoms. Have a nice lunch. Pretty soon the whole town except Charly will know.

Pato slides into the Instituto and forces Barb to shrink his head during her one free hour.

Shortly afterward Santi strolls in and Chayo scolds him for leaving Mari at the altar, he's no Julia Roberts. However she likes his haircut, it makes him look at least a year younger. She gives him a hard time, Candy's not there but Pato, Candy's husband, father of her first and only child, the first love of her life, is. He tells her he's been nothing but a friend to her and here she is making him pay for the poor behavior of all mankind.

Santi advises Chayo that if she doesn't take the job of being the carpet then nobody will trample her. (Tu no tiene vocacion de alfombra y nadie va a pisotearte.) He's interested to hear that Pato is still there.

Babs accuses Patricio of trying to gain her sympathy so that she'll put in a good word to Candy.

Santi interrupts and they mock his haircut, it makes him look 10 seconds younger. Santi thinks Pato needs therapy because Candy loves Santi. Pato asks how recently did she tell him that? Yesterday? Today?

Rocio instructs a bored Chava in the proper way to play with dolls. Jaime and Isabel are nostagically amused. They seem to be getting along quite well.

Santi and Pato argue while Babs observes and takes notes. Santi gets a call on his cellular and puffs his chest, he's important because he has a patient. Pato gets a call and puffs his chest, he's an important businessman! Babs becomes very annoyed and tells them the only way to find out who is the most macho is to have a duel. She's interrupted by their dueling cell phones.

Meño's family tries to give him all the money they have earned. Candy asks Greg, don't you have something to give? No matter, she has a surprise, Santi's banker friend will give him a loan. Candy looks at an oblivious Charly and hopes that money can cure all their problems.

Barb's idea of a duel is to have a dance-off. Whoever can salsa better wins. No? How about rock? No? Then how about an egg battle? (Huevos = eggs and also testicles as we know) Now she's talking! The guys feel very prepared for this. But no, she means throwing eggs, whoever has the best aim wins. They were more excited to display their eggs than to throw them. They finally agree on a round of chin chan pu (ro sham po). Suddenly both their phones ring. Santi answers his first with an "I win!!" Babs, unnoticed, leaves in a huff.

Babs goes to her office and utilizes anger management therapy on herself by punching a pillow.

Greg gets a call, it's that game show she called earlier. They want to ask her some questions. Every family member knows an answer, Candy knows that Garcia Marquez wrote 100 Years of Solitude, Charly knows the Chicago Bulls won the most basketball championships (oops! that would be the Celtics, not the Bulls, but nevermind), Meño knows Marlon Brando was the lead actor in The Godfather, Gregoria knows how to make a custard, and Chava knows that T-Rex is the most famous carnivorous dinosaur. "We all win!!!" Greg gushes happily.

She reveals she entered the contest to win money for the family. "Fuera dolor" they happily chime in unison. (Ugh, my stomach hurts.)

Mariloca is increasingly bitter and Raul advises her to leave Candy alone. "She opened her mouth and now I'm alone with my belly!" She threatens she's too far along to abort but she'll not be responsible for the child. Raul frowns, he's not really hangin' with the crazy sister.

Lalo the couch potato comments that Chayo looks very elegant tonight, she must be going out with her little friends. The doorbell rings and it's Alejandro her "special friend". She presents her EX marido Lalo who is rude and sticks out his tongue.

Meño pulls Tono aside and says Zamoro has AIDS, he wants to help him. (This is weird, are they trying to introduce comic relief or something? I'm confused.)

Chayo returns to the living room, finds Alejandro has been infected by Lalo's indolence and is watching the game with his new best bud. Can Chayo order pizza and grab some beers?

Meño, who really seems to be getting around tonight, grabs Candy for a serious talk. A person close to him has HIV. Candy is impactada, he knows? Did he talk to Charly? Meño keeps blabbing about Zam being in a state of denial; Candy's confused. Nevertheless she calms him down and in typical Candy fashion leaves.

Over at Sole's Pato is playing with the kids. He's very thankful and Sole asks him to stay a minute so they can make up and be friends. I'm happy to report her next statement is, "So...you think you can introduce me to one of your friends?" Too bad his only friend is Santiago.

Candy calls Chava and they pray together which makes Candy sad. Probably because he mentioned Charly. Speaking of whom, Charly the Torta comes home chattering on the phone to Lucia, "I love you baby." (Again, stomach ache.)

Candy decides it's time to have the talk with Charly. Before arriving in Guadalajara he had relationships, right? He denies it at first, but oh my, he did and it was with a married woman from the states. (Damn those American sluts.) Candy breaks the horrible news to him. His test came back positive, HIV positive that is. Caras impactadas and the anvil falls.

Sleeping Santi is interrupted by Mariloca and his son. "Come to papa" he urges. Mariloca laughs, her son doesn't want to! Poor Santi wakes up from his nightmare and calls Mariloca. Serves her right after all her midnight calls to him. For the love of God he wants to be close to his son, it's his right. She cackles "bye", hangs up on him and sticks her finger in her bellybutton. "Ombligo ombligo ombligo" she chants. Creep me out why dontcha.

Beto and Chava stay up late and talk. Chava is worried about his ma, she sounded sad. Beto responds that mamis are always sad. Maybe a gift would help? They mutter "what to give, what to give" in unison. Man, these kids are amazingly astute and cute.

Santi calls his sleepy lawyer Arsenio and explains his serious problem, the mother of his child is talking crazy. Sleepy lawyer agrees to see him first thing in the morning.

Isa hears and has the solution! It's in the cellar. (I'm thinking wine here.)

Candy comforts a weeping Charly. Uh oh, Meño-who-is-everywhere interrupts, what's up? "I'm going to die, dad." Charly cries.

Mañana - Muchas caras impactadas.

Sylvia, Thanks for handling this difficult episode so well. I actualy missed the first half getting home late so I appreciated your thorough description. I am bummed about Charly, where is the funny light heartedness of this telenovela.

Just a thought. I think I heard the solution was in the sótano which is cellar or basement, not attic. Did you hear a different word?

Oops! Thanks amiga, you are so right. I'm changing it right now. Maybe it's a good bottle of wine!

Great picture added while I was writing the first thank you. Thanks for the boat and especially the flamingo to cheer us up. this is certainly a dire set of circumstances but maybe there is only one way out of this deep hole, UP!

Thanks, it's a friend's boat named Wyle E. Coyote (boat designer - Tom Wylie). I knew I'd have a picture somewhere in my archives. Everytime I see him sailing I think of the telenovelas. See how my mind is tainted? It's nothing like your great and artful photos but it's appropriate and it has a flamingo...bonus!

Good morning Sylvia. First of all, let me thank you for that wondrous photo. I could look at it all day. Something about the quality of the "blue" is so very healing and restful.

I found the comic confusion treatment of the AIDS information very odd and not at all funny. Just strange.

Thanks for pointing out the "huevos" double meaning for our dueling galans. I can't say I enjoyed the episode last night, but I did enjoy your clever recap and the fantastic photo. Thanks, amiga.

Thank you, Sylvia, for the speedy recap. I was watching this episode without captions and had no clue what was going on, so I was so glad to find your recap so early this morning. I didn't know whose test results they were talking about. So sad....

Very impressed that you knew my Celts were the all-time record holders!

And how strange that the writers didn't. How long would it have taken to check that little fact. Perturbed me too that Charly said the "Toros" of Chicago instead of using the English word Bulls.

Sylvia...just have to say again, that photo enchants me. I'll be looking at it all day. Sheer joy.

Thank you for the recap and details that I seem to miss...

I have a question: why did Charly have the blood test? I remember quite a few episodes back that he went to the doctor/hospital. I remember seeing him walk out holding his arm with the band aid, etc. I believe Lucia was with him. At the time it seemed to be one of those random scenes (maybe because I missed why he was there, ya think?) and here we are days (weeks?) later with the follow up.

So sad! I'm praying they got his results mixed up with someone else???? However, it wouldn't be a typical telenovela without someone dying. I hope I'm wrong.

Remember when Charly first came to town, he hated homosexuals and had nothing but disdain for gays, probably thinking in the back of his mind that homosexuals get HIV because of their carelessness, etc. Now the writers are giving it back to him with this storyline and having the message be out there that it's a disease that affects gays and straights and compassion should be felt on all fronts. I'm bad with explaining my thoughts, but you know what I'm trying to say. So, I think this storyline about Charly and HIV will be real and the test results will be his. I hope I'm wrong though!

Violet, that's a very good point about Charlie, originally very homophobic and now dealing with disease that at one time was called "the gay cancer". Thankfully, it seems his being tested HIV positive has not been presented as punitive, simply that it is a disease which can affect anyone. I kind of felt like last night's underlying theme was, for lack of a better description, do unto oneself as one does to others. For example, Meno was very worried about Zamora but he's going to have to pull out a whole new set of skills to deal with the fact that it's his own son who is HIV positive. Santi is very encouraging with Meno as long as he thinks it's Zamora who tested positive, how will he react when he finds out it's his daughter's boyfriend? There was also a theme of redemption...Patricio is redeeming himself (which Meno noted out loud), Gregoria is attempting to redeem herself, and I believe that Raul is on the verge of leaving the dark side.

Yes, Sylvia, that's what I was trying to say!

Deb, Charly had the blood test because one of his friends in the hospital needed blood and he had to be tested in order to donate. It was just one quick scene, not very thoroughly pressented. Easy to miss.

Thank you Sylvia!
OH NO, if I read right (in my morning fog), Charly was with someone BEFORE Luc?
I was hoping it was after and she would be safe. Now it's another tragedy added to the mix.
This comedy is indeed getting darker. I'm hoping for the light.

Carrie L.

Hey Carrie, I was thinking about your comment yesterday about Marissa leaving the baby at a church. In the Twilight Zone, the baby would then have been a girl and would grow up to be Sara from Querida Enemiga.

Sylvia, great recap and I like the photo, too. Sorry about the baggy spinnaker and apparent becalming - hope it didn't last too long!

Sylvia, another great recap of a very difficult and troubling episode. It will be interesting to see how the writers develop this turn of events. Yesterday I was really feeling sympathetic toward Kris who was struggling to come to grips with this situation. I'm interested to see how Santi is going to deal with this being a physician and all. It's difficult enough being dispassionate when it's an unrelated pt. With his niece involved with Charly, I'm anxious to see how much faith he has in condoms.

Carlos

Thank you Sylvia, for the light and lively recap, and terrific picture. Except for the HIV thing (that's a BIG except), I found the show very funny. I liked the scene of Ed and Chayo, where Chayo's date ended up watching the game with Ed; and I thought Santi and Pat's duel was funny. I also liked how everyone contributed to help Meño (I think Candy had about $1000, Charly $50.00, Chava 50 centavos (5 cents?), and I think Gregoria won about $5,000.00).

But of course, the HIV thing put a downer on the whole show. Previously, problems have been resolved pretty quickly. Chava's leukemia lasted about 3 shows, Charly was hit by a car, but was fine, Candy and Alicia both have been knocked out, but recovered right away, Meño lost the restaurant and the Institute for about two days until it was solved. But Charly's HIV (and the fact that they may now have to test Lucía) aren't going to be so easy to solve.

Minor clarification on Charly's previous partner. It was a married woman whose husband was working in the US. Which could imply several things:
1. She was a "bad" woman because while her husband's away she's picking up underage boys for flings.
2. Her husband should be with his family; seperating the family is destructive to everyone involved. In this show you see several brief references to people going to the US for work, and as I recall, it's always negative.
3. Perhaps her husband got infected while living apart from his family and being irresponsible. And when he came home to visit..

Cheers for Soledad! She has finally emotionally let go of Pat, and better yet, she has indicated that she is open to finding someone else. I hope this is means someone will come along soon.

Sylvia, thank you for the great recap. I especially liked your analysis (in the comments) of last night's theme.

Thanks for the recap Sylvia. I'm so glad people are on the ball here and can predict story lines but Charly having HIV is a real downer. As others have mentioned, this was supposed to be the comical (read people don't die) novela.

Loved that picture. I'd like to be on that boat.

Nice Photo and I recognize that flamingo!!!!

Thanks for the cap!! Funny, especially the stomaches in just the right places.

Oh these darned anvils. I agree with Karen. I prefer the "comical" myself.

Still holding out that it's all an error...

Hey Mike, good call on the windless conditions. We bobbed for a while but finally got going when the wind picked up a bit.

I'm hoping that Charly got infected after he slept with Lucia. It's possible that the person who infected him was the drug-using ex-girlfriend of his pal whats-his-name. I did a little (and I do mean little) bit of reading about AIDS in Mexico after my post. Apparently it's not a huge problem in Mexico in terms of percentage of population infected, however, quoting from a report from NPR: "Many Mexican immigrants with HIV/AIDS say their country still has a repressive, sometimes brutal way of dealing with those afflicted with the virus. As a result, HIV/AIDS patients in Mexico are seeking — and getting — political asylum in the U.S."

Perhaps our telenovela is addressing this aspect of the disease. Maybe the writers are trying to enhance awareness that anyone can become infected and there are some easy ways to avoid it.

Judy, I see in the paper today that the OSU women's team has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and it looks very likely that the men's team will also earn an invitation. Our (Baylor) women's team is almost certain to get bid and miracle of miracles our men's team beat Kansas (#11) in the Big12 tournament yesterday so we have some slim hopes still alive. We play Texas tonight. I love March Madness!

Carlos

Oh Carlos, I KNEW we had a psychic connection. March Madness is my favorite time of year. March is a great time for high school basketball too and we were living in Indiana when I was a teenager so I became a dedicated fan then.

So happy about Baylor and AMAZING and WONDERFUL that you beat Kansas...a terrific team.

We, wonder of wonder, beat Wisconsin, something we haven't done in many meetings. So we advance to Michigan State tomorrow (they are slated to win the Big 10 playoffs...they've already won the Big 10 proper.)

Sorry to all you non-fans. I apologize for being off-topic again.

PS I'll be rooting for you tonight. I've heard Texas is slated to win it all but miracles can still happen by golly!

I rarely read the telenovela world forum but I was just lurking around and noticed that someone mentioned that Televisa is working in conjunction with Mexican Health Ministry to educate people, especially young people, about aids. This would explain the current story line, which is intended to h; it is intended to help wipe out the myths and taboos associated with the disease.
