Mañana es para siempre, March 2, in which Eduardo tells his ma they'll live by a lake and go fishing...
A few thoughts at this, my first viewing of the characters now that they are older, way older. I suggest that all of you who have beanies should dial them to a 25-year time gap rather than 15.
On the other hand, Barbara is doing the Dorian Gray thing - in the attic, no doubt there's a picture of her looking like a scary wrinkled hag, but in the present day she looks like Fernanda's sister...
My only complaint, other than this, is Fernanda's eyebrows, the eyebrows of a villainess, in fact she looks like Alicia in Las Tontas. I just can't warm to her as the ingenue. So sad - I loved the long-ago Fernanda so so much!!
Well, anyway.
- Jacinto and Eduardo are reunited in town; Eduardo gets filled in on the seamy goings-on we've been witnessing. "Why didn't you tell me any of this sooner?" "I didn't have your address or phone number." Ed asks Jacinto not to tell anybody he's back, he wants to operate incognito for a while to scope things out. He's horrified to hear his mother is sick.
- There's a tussle over powdered milk at the office. Daddy Elizalde is opposed, not because it's illegal or expired or contraband or whatever (because he doesn't know that), but because he fears it will harm the livelihood of the area's small dairies. Barbara and Damian and Anibal and Anibal's wife Priscila are pro-powder.
Anibal and Priscila get sent out of the room. Barbara plies her nigh-infarcted hubby with booze and frightens him with stories of the competition, which I believe includes Priscila's family. "It's go with the powder, or lose your clients..." - Fer tells her BFF Erika about the handsome dude she sprayed with mud on the road. With much giggling she moans about his enchanting smile. "He acted as if he knew me... He rattled me a bit when he asked why I was marrying."
She tells Erika her love of Damian is relaxed, mature, not like silly young things with butterflies in their stomachs.
Erika teases Fer for still being a virgin. "It's cause I want a really special wedding night."
- Erika told Fer she hopes to win back Camilo's love, but I'd guess Camilo's love is not worth the paper it's printed on: he's next seen smooching in a Jacuzzi with some bimbo. [He is the orange-tanned stupid oversexed jerk who was Ludwika's novio (Ludwika who is now Liliana) in 'Niña Amada Mia.' --Ed.] UPDATE: Jarocha pointed out Liliana is actually Dominika Paleta, Ludwikak's sister. Ooops, there are two of them!?
- The doctor says Soledad has pneumonia compounded by a "tired heart." He doesn't seem hopeful but writes out prescriptions. Jacinto gives the doc 200 pesos and Margarita [who played the sexy sister in Juan Querendón] asks where he got it.
Poor Jacinto, he's not long on brains and is certainly not ready for all the lying Eduardo's expecting him to do! Fact is, it was Ed who gave him the dough, but Jacinto can't say so. "Father Bosco lent it to me."
Margarita goes off for the medicine, Eduardo sneaks into the cottage. Jacinto tells him he's got an hour.
His ma is asleep under her crucifix. He looks at a picture of his parents and whispers, "Papa, don't take Ma away, I need her. She's suffered all these years... She was so happy when I was young..." He's shocked by the changes a quarter-century have made and swears the Elizaldes will pay.
Ma wakes up and says "What are you doing here? You have to go away!" "Let's go away together!" he says sweetly, and they have a tender reunion (at the expense of Jacinto, who is desperately trying to keep Margarita from going back to the cottage and is a rotten liar).
Ed gives his ma her medicine and asks if all this misfortune came from his innocent kiss with Fer. Ma, though she doesn't tell him, remembers Barbara's threat ("Say anything about Artemio Bravo and I'll kill your brat and the Elizalde children just like I offed Montserrat") and desperately asks Ed to stay away from the Big House.
He tells her he's incognito and then goes on with his wistful fantasy: that he and she will go off and live in a house near a lake, with a garden and a boat, and go fishing on the weekends...
She coughs and coughs. "Ma, I'll take you to the hospital!" "No, for what I have there is no cure." - The Elizaldes are all lounging around their living room. Santiago has sent them a letter, he'll be back for the wedding. [Did I catch a glimpse of Raul from Las Tontas, aka Meester James, wearing ridiculous curls and a faux ingenuous expression -- is he gonna be Santiago, the youngest son? Oh no, oh no! --Ed.]
Fer reminds her loutish middle brother Camilo that Erika is going to be one of her maids of honor, it's awkward because of Camilo and his bimbos. Fer also sez she wants dear doped-up Liliana and nanny Soledad to sit at the same table at the wedding.
Dad gets up and makes a speech, apologizing for the scene earlier in the day. He thanks Priscila: "You betrayed your family for us." "But we'll never tell, we're discreet" sez Barbara. (There is some complicated wheeling-and-dealing over Barbara's milk scheming, without captions it eluded me.)
There is talk of expanding their operation into the U.S. Fer is worried, like her dad, about the livelihood of the Little Guys. She is mollified when Damian is called on to discuss the plans for some giant mega-center (maybe a community center) they're building. (But the baddies remind each other, "Don't let her anywhere near the site.") - The meeting is over; Fer and Damian are leaving but Barbara barks, "Where are you going?" "To see my nanny Soledad, she's sick."
- Jacinto can't keep Margarita away from the cottage any longer with his feeble stories of soup and Father Bosco, and Gardenia is already banging at the cottage door... Ed, your time is running out... Hearing Gardenia outside, Ed flashes to the letter she gave him when he went away... "Ma, it's not safe to tell Gardenia and Margarita that I'm here, they both go to the Big House."
Soledad realizes Ed is still in love with Fer and is still wearing Fer's communion medallion... She struggles out of bed to answer the door... - While driving to Soledad's in their nice car, Fer and Damian encounter Jacinto and Margarita walking down the road. Fer offers them a ride, since they're all going to the same place. (When the others get out, Damian stays behind for a moment to wipe the lower-class coodies off his pristine upper-class back seat.)
These four plus Gardenia converge at the door. Soledad slips out and greets all five in her shawl and jammies. Fer hugs her, they go in the house (except Jacinto, who lurks outside with Eduardo watching through the window as Damian drifts around spying on everything).
"So that's the fiancé!..." Ed sez he doesn't want to see Fer here...
Fer wants to take Soledad to the hospital but Soledad just wants to stay home with her herbs. Fer is impactada to hear that Eduardo will be home soon.
Tomorrow: Liliana is injected with drugs as she screams and sobs, "They're waiting for me in the garden!"
Ed and Fer have a nice juicy kiss -- as do Barbara and Damian.

For what it’s worth, I have a distant relative named Anibal (I think he’s a third cousin) who is very sweet and very handsome. Haven’t met a nice Hanibal though (or a bad one for that matter, I think that’s one of those names people no longer wish to use, like Jezabel). Melinama’s right though, it was the middle brother who kissed the girl his kid brother liked. Anibal is the oldest.
Anon from Feb 25th – the yellow banner was a code for Fern (are we allowed to use that one again yet?) to know Ed was waiting for her. They apparently had dreamed up some secret adventure fantasyland where he was some crime fighting rider type character (el jinete justiciero). If your Spanish is not too bad, you can go on YouTube and look for episode one. Thing to keep in mind for those who miss epis and want to go to YouTube: the first few were half an hour (I think someone said it was the first 10), so keep that in mind when you go looking for them. Type in the whole title and add Capitulo 1 (or whatever episode you’re looking for) and should be able to find it.
To add a little more on the already ample definition of the word “ladino” – one definition, the one I was most familiar with, is cunning and/or smooth talking, which made me think Montserrat thought Ed was just a manipulative kid. A few years ago I learned that it was also a word for Sephardic Hispanic Jews and that you can find songs in that language (a friend of mine who’s a cantor was trying to add some to her service repertoire). Makes me wonder if the definition I originally knew evolved from a racial slur towards Jews. What I didn’t know, is that it can also be a term for a “half breed” (mestizos originally being half white (usually Spanish, though sometimes Portuguese) and half Native American Indian). This would fit in with Melissa’s explanation that Monsty called Ed “indio” not because he was “indian,” but because he was darker. About 95% of all Mexicans are mestizos, and we all tend to have some percentage of that native indian blood; it’s just a question of which features and to which extent (such as skin tone, hair color, facial hair) we inherit. The more obvious those traits, the more likely you are to get the nickname as finding a pure-blooded “indio” in Mexico is highly unlikely (though not impossible, they still comprise part of that remaining 5%). Montsy probably has some native blood too!
Oh, Bonney, I think the word you were thinking of was “indigo” – a very dark shade of blue that is almost black. In Spanish it’s called “añil.”
La Paloma – good point on Ed’s hair straightening. You can make a case for his skin getting darker over time as he got older, but his hair? Then again, my hair was so ridiculously straight as a child I couldn’t even put bobby pins in it without them sliding off. Now it’s a little wavy and can actually hold curl if I use rollers (when I tried it for prom it barely survived through the pictures), so maybe it can work the other way too.
Jeff – I won’t give anything away (esp since I haven’t seen any future stuff in this and stopped watching FELS ages go), but the reasons that most consider Gaby more hateful than Babs are 1) Gaby did her deeds by choice (except for the occasional manipulation from Feonando), whereas Babs is basically a henchwoman (no idea what kind of hold Artemio has on Babs) and 2) Gaby imparted a ton of damage on her own children, Babs doesn’t know these people (though she apparently also killed her parents, but we don’t know if they were abusive or something).
Anon from Feb 27th, do you mean for Augie from FELS to play Gonzo? He’s certainly much older than Colunga. If memory serves right, he’s at least a grandfather in real life.
Lola – Anibal is actually the eldest brother. In the 1992 years, he was heading off to college. Having said that, both Guillermo Capetillo (Anibal) and Colunga are indeed older than Lucero (Babs). For a bit of useless trivia, this is at least the second time Capetillo’s played Rogelio Guerra’s son. The previous time I saw them together this way was in “Los Ricos Tambien Lloran” waaaay back when.
Doris, it’s been a year since Ed graduated and he apparently got some awesome job straight out of college (not unheard of with a Masters degree and possibly an impressive internship), probably on Wall Street since it’s New York. Some of the big banks do ridiculous sign-up bonuses and/or year-end bonuses if you generate enough revenue. Guess that’s my roundabout way of saying he could probably afford some nice bling. Besides, most jewelers take plastic and offer financing offers so he can pay it over time one way or another if he needed to. Not necessarily sound financially, but alas, people do it all the time.
Is it me, or is the actress playing Erika our beloved Jimena from Pasion? I think it was her with a hair cut and dye job.
Oh, for some useless trivia, “engendro” = spawn (“engendro del demonio” = “spawn of satan”). Not a very nice term when referring to someone’s child, even if it is technically correct.
Nice recap Melinama! Just one thing, Liliana is played by Dominika Paleta, Ludwika's older sister.
I agree about the eyebrows on Fernanda/Silvia, they need to be a litlle... softer?
Margarita Chilaquiles, when Montserrat mentioned "Ladino" I originally thought she meant manipulative, but it wasn't until reading here that I thought she might have meant "indio", it's been a while since I have heard that word used in that way, but it did made sense that she was implying that, now I'm back to confusion. And glad you mentioned the fact that most of us mexicans are mestizos, no matter how pale our skin might be.
By the way, to add to your trivia, Rogelio Guerra has also played Lucero's father, about sixteen years ago, in the novela "Los Parientes Pobres".
Jarocha
My first introduction to the word ladino/a was Alborada, my very first telenovela. Coincidentally the actress who plays Soledad in MEPS played the pirate queen in Alborada. She was a ladina, i.e. hispanic jew, and the story line was quite powerful. Plus, as the Pirate Queen she seriously kicked a**.
The actress playing Fernanda looks a little softer and prettier when framed by her straw hat. Otherwise, she's a bit hard to cotton to as the heroine. But needs must! Maybe she'll grow on us by virtue of her sterling character.
I also agree on the eyebrows. I was going to comment yesterday, but I was afraid to sound mean. But they are really ugly and make her look like a science fiction character (like a Klingon or Vulcan).
Connie: I didn't hear you sigh last night. Did you get your FC fix? Even with a somewhat reality-suspending script, he is
just
so
fine.
Wow, Margarita! Thanks for all of the info. Who says watching TNs isn't educational? (well, we could debate the educational benefits of Spanish soap operas but there is NO argument against Caray Caray's incredibly talented recappers & commenters.)
Liliana is Jimena from Pasion? Missed that completely. Put her in a tight orange gown & get her out of her catatonic state & maybe then I'd recognize her.
Ciao!
Maggarita
;-)
Margarita Chilaquiles: enjoyed your backgrounder on Ladina vs. indio. Now, the question is, as a native speaker, how easy is it for you to capture everything Silvia is saying? Even the actor playing Jacinto fairly sprinted to the end of his lines with FC in the first scenes last night.
Santiago, I think the painter kid is Carlos de la Mota, who was so cute in Destilando, what on earth have they done to him werewolf eyebrows & goofy hair?
I find peque to mean kid or child.
I noticed that Margarita called Jacinto monstruo also. In addition to monster, it means genius, giant, phenomenon & fantastic. She also called him flaco, which I can't find any meaning other than skinny, thin, poor.
Anibal the eldest son (pudgy, dark hair) is married to Priscila (black hair)
Camilo the middle boy (orange tan, snide expression) took Erika away from the youngest brother Santiago (whom I am horribly forecasting is going to be Meester James in a fright wig) who still loves her but Camilo has moved on to bimbos while Erika languishes for him.
Abuelo P
I won't get to watch this MEPSisode, or the rest of the week, so am relying on the recappers to carry me. :-) Please accept my enduring gratitude to y'all for your time and labors.
Margarita Chilaquiles- thank you for the great insight and info. I missed the episode where the grown-up Ed was introduced to us viewers.
So happy to see 'Jimena' back...
jb
Abuelo P: you spent some serious dinero on a top-of-the-line beanie! Hang with us! Love your humor!!!!! After all, what fun is a TN that has nothing to criticize?
Maggarita
:-D
Babs did impart one bit of useful information: whisky is better for someone with high blood pressure than cognac, who knew?
I can't decide if Priscilla most resembles Xena or Suzanne Sugarbaker. Either way, even though she may be evil, she's easy on the eyes.
Carlos
And Priscila is Ivonne from Querendon. Quite a few alumni from that TN (Ivonne/Priscila, Yadira/Margarita, Naco?/Jacinto).
The way things are with Soledad, the right thing to do for Eduardo is to announce who he and take his mother to a hospital to get proper care. Have to take care of her, plain and simple. :-)

Thanks for your info Margarita. We really do learn so much here.
Marggarita, you mean FC is responsible for global warming?
I noticed he didn't take that jacket & scarf off even when he slept next to mamá. The suitcase didn't look like it had anything in it.
Did we hear what Ed's major was at Harvard?
I am fascinated with the Sephardic (Ladino) traditions from Spain, especially the wonderful music. It is interesting to contemplate how long ago the Jews must have come to Spain, probably came with the Romans but never mind when Isabel wanted the Catholic supremacy in Spain in the late 1400's, they were driven out with more hatred and fear than the invading Muslims who had only been there for 700 years or so. Small wonder that the word ladino became an insult.
Happy Birthday Dear Fernando and many more!! I just put FC's birthday in my perpetual birthday reminder so I can plan ahead. I will postpone the chocolate cake event until I can take it to a party. Willa is forbidden chocolate since she is a dog and I don't need to eat one alone...
I have less faith in Fernanada's appeal as a heroine, but I'll still hang around for the GGs (gorgeous galans).
I'd missed Jimena as Erika, so thanks for the comments on that. I'll pay more attention the next time she's on screen.
Pobre Soledad. Not only does she have an apparently fatal illness, she's oppressed by the BOW and doesn't get to see her handsome son for years. She's very fiesty over on Mariana de la Noche, where she's mother to Jorge Salinas and keeps her staff and customers in line in her lovely cantina on the water.
Thanks for the beanie update, Abuelo P. Very cool! I'm trying to make do with retrofitting my FELS beanie with an additional layer of non-stick foil. Maybe if I add a lining of the really thick, cushy bathroom tissue between the foil layers?
By the way, which part of Mexico is this supposed to be? I didn't catch that in the synopsis. I seem to enjoy the TNs that have a rural setting with lots of nice scenery.
La Paloma
I watched some of the Sunday night FELS program. I had a hard time following because the captions lagged the dialogue. There were some brief 'interviews' of the major players including Diana Bracho and Susanna Zabaleta. Long enough to see that they are not the characters they played on FELS. It was a kind of 'making of FELS' program with interviews with director and shots of the filming being done.

La Paloma
I live in CH, too!! My captions have been OK, and I don't even have cable. I wish my Spanish were good enough to help you out, but even with the captions, this one is a bit too fast for me.
Beth
Enjoying FC and am also thrilled to have Jimena back. Too bad she is completely wasted on Camilo who possesses no charm, personality or looks. She deserves someone of "Mario" caliber. Diana in MA
I may be in the minority, but I do like Fernanda's eyebrows. To me, she's bewitching, in a good way, like Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched. It makes her different from the typical ingenue, and I like that.
Carlos: I, too find Priscila very sexy and attractive.
I knew I'd seen the actress who plays Erika somewhere before, I would have never guessed in a million years it was Jimena from Pasion. Look what a modern haircut in a darker color can do!!
Let's see, my next question is where have I seen the actress who plays Gardenia? I keep thinking she was the wife stealer from Fea, but I'm not sure. Anyone know?
Speaking of eyebrows, our heroine's continue up into outer space but Ed's are a little strange as well, especially the inner part right between his eyes on his handsome face. These new HDTV closeups reveal too much including age lines. Sorry for picking on the the TMBMOE (is that the right sequence?)
I hope there is a sideplot in which Erika realizes Santiago has pined for her his entire life and they end up as a couple, since Camilo is such a cruel person and a cheating spouse. Also we can see more of that curly yet flat thing that is sitting on top of Santiago/Meester James' head.
I haven't seen many novelas but the more rural the setting, the less sense the characters seem to have. Rod of the agave plantation, the entire population of CD Serdan and now this rural dairy area. Yes, call a taxi or ambulance and have Mom taken to a hospital. Mr. Harvard MBA. I am retrieving my beanie which I thought would get a little rest but I was obviously mistaken. GinCA
One of the men (I don't recall which) said that this made Priscilla a traitor to her own family, and the answer to that was that her family was secretly planning to steal the Elizaldes' clients.
I don't know how much, if any of this story is true; I believe Barb and Damian and Pris concocted it to explain why they need to be quiet about the powdered milk.
In any case, there's something illegal about the milk and they are planning to stash it in some new community center that Fernanda and her dad want to build. I think Barb told Damian to keep Fernanda away from the place so she won't see it.
At this point, I am thoroughly confused about the grown-up characters, especially the denizens of the casa grande. I rely on all of you to set the record straight and maybe in a few weeks I'll get the hang of it. But they seem like a fairly unattractive lot ¿verdad?
Cathy, yes, she is Yazmin from LFMB. She was the one stealing Senor Checque.

That's one of the most fun things to do at the beginnig of a show is to figure out where I've seen the actors before. I even play a little game to see if there is someone from each of the novelas I've watched before----there usually is and the more novelas I watch the easier it seems to become.
Khalilah
So everyone has aged, and Babs is now married to the dad whose wife she offed last week, yes?
So to age her did they just use less hair spray? The only thing that looks different is her hair doesn't have its own zip code now.
Ed (FC) is hot, even covered with mud! Was there a clean up scene after that, that I need to youtube? I do love a good water feature.
Carlos

Dont' know if this is Sunday's show or one earlier in the production.
Priscilla's family and Anibal's family should join forces and merge the companies so that they would be stronger instead of competitors. That is the logical reason for them to be married to each other anyway, other than love. Yeah, I know Beanie time...
I wonder which of you ladies consider the king of novelas and the guy you really want. Is it Eduardo Yanez, Fernando Colunga, Sebastian Ruli or Mario Cimarro? Maybe there should be a poll.
With the snowstorm in the eastcoast, my 3 day weekend became 5 and I finished watching the Fuego En La Sangre DVD.
Some observations:
-Padre Tadeo wears a black leather jacket and dark jeans to go along with his priestly garb in Gabriela's party for Bernardo.
- Few cabana building scenes.
-Cuetzalan is the location of Libia's tomb, then later Xochitlan unless they moved it off camera, continuity error.
-The jaripeo was combined with the Santa Semana(Holy Week) festival minus the fist fight against the Uribe boys.
- Nabor was not in the taxi jeeep that was framed for Bernardo's murder. The occupants were different guys.
- Scenes of Franco and Rosario in the hospital fro burns shortened to being admitted and when they finally open their eyes and recover.
-After the Reyes' Bros. revealed that Libia was their sister, fast forward to recovering the hacienda Uribe into Robles-Reyes and sofia pregnant about to give birth.
- Las Barrancas,Llorona,Damien Ferrer never happened. 25-30 episodes gone. Dra. Hotlips is never seen at all. :(
Juan falls into the watrerfall then next he is in the church with no memory at all and is discovered by sofia upon his 'Return'. Rosario and Armand are kiled that night.
-Ruth first appears when it was raining and eva runs into her at the shelter/dispensario.
- Minimal Ruth appearances after Ricardo Uribe shows up.
-Julianna,Elena,La Pau and the possibles never happened. Skipped through Oscar's self pity when he lost the use of his legs.
-Gabriela's 'deathbed confession' wiped out.
-Raquel,Coyote,Ricardo and Ruth die in succession.
-Fernando's faked death scenes removed. No scene of Sarita's rape attempt.
-No stupid scenes of quintina and the spinster sisters Maria Caridad and MAria Esperanza. they are only seen in the wedding scene at the church. This one, I agree with 100% mil beses. :)
Sorry to derail the MEPS thread. Looking forward to tonight's episode......

Ibarramedia, for me it's Jaime Camil all the way, baby, all the way. . . . .
Khalilah
"Thanks for the info on the FELS dvd, Ibarramedia. Just out of curiosity, how many hours long is the the dvd and does it have Spanish as well as English subtitles?"
There are no subtitles whatsoever. If the US version comes out with English subtitles, I may even get it for the heck of it. I alos have the cd. It has some songs by cast memebers that were never sung in the show. ie, Maria Sorte(Eva) and Joaquin Cordero(Don Agustin Acevedo). afew of the songs i was looking for were there, like the incidental/intrumental songs:
- Fuego En La Sangre trumpet version. i wished they had the piano version which would be sofia's baby theme that was also used in Pasion or maybe Amor Real...
Juan,Fernando and Oscar Incidental/instrumentals were there too.
At the very end, you see a lot of musical credits scrolling up. When i have time, I will check them out. The few that I've caught were "Buried Secrets" by Oliver Vessey and "Kyrie" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I think he also did "Sanis". I also saw"Bible Story" and "The Cattle" by someone Richard. Looks like Alyhill Richard. It's difficult reading the Fuego Script....
Another trivia nugget:
Bernardo was wearing a blue Polo Ralph Lauren shirt on the party that Gabriella gave him. That means there are only 2 indications of real worl fashin branding. The other being Sarita's Dolce and Gabbana glasses. One of her many glasses she wore when she finally let her hair down after doing the deed with Franco. :)
Everyone else seem to be wearing FGuego En la Sangre brand of clothes. ;)
Feel free to buy the dvd..... OR NOT. :)
Ibarramedia
signifantly less for a 207 episode novella as opposed to 14 hours or 600-700 minutes for Amor Real,Alborada,Pasion,Pasion De gavilanes which are less than 200 episodes apiece.
Ibarramedia
As for fashions in FELS, don't forget the product placement ad for Illusions (I think that's what it's called), the lingerie catalog. That's the only time anyone mentioned using a phone on that show, too.
I admit that MEPS requires some beanie protection, but I'm glad they seem to have all the modern conveniences!
BTW excellent recap Melinama!
