MEPS, Thursday, September 3, 2009. So Many Cliffs; So Many People Ready to Fall Off

Readers: I will not be able to do the recap next week. Will someone out there sub for me? Thanks.

Flor heads to Purification in a taxi and tells Fer that she’ll be there in about half an hour. She’ll get there and as soon as she does Fer wants her to call. The cab driver is flattered when Flor calls him “joven.” With that encouragement, he steps on the gas.

Steve talks with Camilo and Venus. Venus tells him that Barbara is making all the arrangements for the party. They are going to invite everyone Camilo knows in his personal and business life to the party announcing their engagement. Camilo takes his leave and says goodbye to “tio” Steve. Venus gives Cam a hot kiss and asks him to call her. Steve has a fit with Venus. He tells her Camilo is not only a parasite, but irresponsible and abusive to women and those who cannot fight back like Jacinto. She says she’ll keep that in mind. Editor: What is Venus plotting? Maybe she’ll do a strip dance at the big shindig and invite her friends from the cantina. Wouldn’t that be cute.

Barb gives little Rocio at the country house instructions to leave with the maid when the work is done. Barb flashes back to the day that she pushed Rosendo down the hill. The maid is finished and Barb gives her a tip.

Aurora is knitting at the convent. She talks to the nun who went on that little adventure with her. They are very remorseful for having told Mother Superior so many lies. The nun wants to know what she talked to the man about. Aurora tells her Barbara Elizalde. Aurora doesn’t understand why she was released. She now knows that Barbara is very interested in her and it worries her.

Damian gives an envelope to Barb with half the money in it. Barbara calls him an imbecile and he tells her that the only way to get Aurora is by force. He curses the nuns. If she wants, he’ll go back to get Aurora. Barb says no. Damian says let’s not let this trip be in vain. We’ll succeed. Editor: So, he is his old dastardly self working Barb like she’s worked him.

Aurora tells the nun about her relationship with Barb. They wonder what will happen if Aurora doesn’t go. The nun wants to pray. Aurora tells the nun that if he wanted to do her damage it would have happened. It’s all up to Barbara to get me out of here.

Barb threatens Damian some more and decides that she’ll go talk to Aurora herself. Damian smiles his sweet Cheshire cat smile.

Editor: OK, readers, do you think Damian has turned over a new leaf? Nah, this grifter sees that there is money to be made here, and he’s getting in line for his share.

Meanwhile Flor’s taxi has a flat tire and she is stranded on the highway. I did not see this coming

Vlad is following Pris in the garage. She tells him to get in the car. They roll the windows down so we can hear better. She tells him he doesn’t listen and is complicating the situation. He says he’s afraid for her and for the child. He’s afraid that Ani will not comply with his word. Once again he states his paternal rights. She says we can’t talk like this. Vlad is visibly disturbed. She tries to calm him down because it’s not good for the baby. Pris is disgusted with him. He says the only reason she came to him was to get pregnant. But, he’ll forgive her and not be bitter, but what he needs and loves most in this life is that his child is not taken from him. He wants her to swear. Pris cries.

Erika shows the invitations to Steve and Franco. Franco leaves the room. Erika asks a big favor of Steve and says her wedding with Franco depends upon it.

Steve asks Erika what she’s talking about. She tells Steve about Father Bosco’s failure to give them a copy of Franco’s Baptismal Certificate. She says that what she has in mind is simple.

Gardenia is manning the front counter again. Fer asks her about papa – gone; Anibal – gone; Barbara – gone. Fer shows Gardenia a sample of possible career paths. Gardenia of course doesn’t know how to answer. Fer tells her that she will acquire security and that she has to give reality to her dreams.

Pris assures Vlad that he has nothing to worry about. Ani will respect his paternity and that his pride and desire to punish her and humiliate her by making her infidelity public drives him onward. It doesn’t matter to her, but to Vlad it does. They are both crying. Vlad has the solution to make Anibal tow the line and humiliate her no more.

Speaking of the devil, Anibal drives up and sees Pris and Vlad talking in the car. Vlad is investigating and is going to try to prove that he’s the father of the child and that they can beat Anibal. Anibal looks like the devil himself because he knows these two are up to no good. Anibal drives away.

Pris says that Vlad is right but tests to prove paternity can be very dangerous. He wants to make sure that nothing happens to the baby and he wants Anibal to know that the two of them are ready to fight for the child. Editor: I’m getting sucked in by the tears welling up in the eyes of this pair. I wonder if is Pris being more sympathetic towards Vlad or is it my imagination.

Back at the taxi, Flor is on the road again. They finally arrive near the convent. None other than Barb is getting out of her gas guzzling SUV. Flor tells the driver to put on the breaks. She doesn’t want Barb to see her. The taxi backs up down the street.

Barb knocks and a nun answers. Barb says she wants to see Aurora. The nun runs to Aurora and tells her that the stepmother is there to visit her. Aurora tells her that they are going to see Mother Superior.

Flor has to offer the cab driver a good tip to continue.

Aurora asks Mother Superior for permission to see Barb. Mother Superior agrees and Aurora asks to see Barb in her room. Mother agrees.

Fer says she has to see somebody in person and will wait in her office.

Flor calls and tells Fer that she couldn’t do the job because Barbara arrived at the convent at the same time. Flor says don’t worry, Barb didn’t see me, but Flor is terrified. Fer tells Flor to return so that Barb won’t see her. Why does Barb go to see Aurora? Fer muses.

Barb goes into Aurora’s room. With catlike maternal pride, she says “Aurora, daughter, how pretty you are.”

Erika and her co conspirator, Steve, plan to visit a museum tomorrow. Conveniently, Franco’s cell rings. It’s Fer. He says you aren’t interrupting anything. She would like to see him in her office and she knows exactly where Barb is. Franco takes his leave and says he has to go to Lactos. Dear Erika tells him not to get too distracted. Franco looks at the two of them quizzically. Steve and Erika are going to Villa Madera apparently to get the papers needed for the wedding.

Aurora flatters Barb and tells her how happy she is to see her. Barb eats it up and asks about the baby. Good, says Aurora. It’s not moving yet. Barb lies and says she’s never touched the belly of a pregnant woman. She reaches out to touch Aurora and a tear trickles down her cheek. She offers her help. Aurora asks why did you order my removal from here.

Pris says hello to Gardenia. Anibal is in and Pris goes to his office. Pris tells Anibal that they have to talk right away.

Editor: At this point Pris could tell Anibal the truth, or she could make up a lie. In either case, Anibal is holding the trump card.

Aurora wants to know why Barb sent those people. Barb says she was afraid that Aurora wouldn’t talk to her because she might think that all the Elizaldes were all the same. She asks if Aurora hates her. Aurora says no. Barb says that what she did was very bad. She didn’t give Aurora time to explain. Camilo told her what happened and that she knows that Aurora is innocent. Aurora wants to know what Camilo said.

Barb tells her about the drug, but says now there is an opportunity to repair all the damage. Aurora wants to know about Santiago. Barb says that Santiago will never forgive his brother and Aurora says that’s what she thought, too. Barb wants Aurora to know something else. Gonzo is very sick and Camilo is his favorite child (consentido). Barb wants her to give birth to the baby in secret with just Santiago and her. Barb wants her to go with her on a trip so that she can take care of her and the baby. What’s your answer? Break.

Pris tells Anibal that Vlad suspects that they will not comply with their word and that Vlad wants a paternity test. Anibal is not going to let that imbecile interfere with his plans and that he will do whatever it takes to stop Vlad.

Aurora tells Barb that she wants to wait a while. Barb tells her to take however much time she needs. Aurora says she’s a little confused. Barb understands perfectly and caresses Aurora. She says that she hopes that one day Aurora will forgive her. There is no hurry, you can give me a reply when you want. Barb wants to visit her daily but she understands she can’t. One last favor. says Barb, I beg you that when I come to look for you please receive me. Don’t refuse me. Aurora nods, yes. Barb thanks her.

Camilo is having a fit over the news Fer is giving him about the division of his father’s wealth. He says he’ll never change his mind. Fer says that this transfer will be convenient to them.

After all the drama between Barb and Aurora, we’re back at Lactos. Flor arrives and Gardenia starts to fill her in on the gossip. Before they can get going, Franco enters and tells Gardenia that he has an appointment with Fernando. Flor and Gardenia fight over who will give Fer the message. So, they both try to call. Flor tells Fer that she’s back and that Franco is there to see her. Camilo says so what about the rest of this conversation? Sorry, I have to talk to Franco. With Franco present, Fer repeats the story of Gonzo’s division of property. Franco says that it was he who suggested that his father make this division of wealth. Another break.

At Villa Madero, Erika talks to Chelsea and sets up a coffee date for tomorrow. Padre Arcadio enters and asks what he can do for them. Erika introduces Steve as her fiancées best friend. She tells the priest that Franco lost his Baptismal Certificate. She retells her conversation with Padre Bosco. Steve is willing to swear that his friend has been baptized. He calls the secretary and tells her to take the information (datos) to issue the copy. Erika begins giving her the information.

Aurora goes to see Mother Superior.

Barb drives onward with a big smile on her face.

Yes, says Franco, it sounds absurd that such a transfer will be beneficial to them. Gonzo is an old man, his company fears that if he dies his interests will pass to all the children, people that Power Milk doesn’t know. So, says, Camilo, give Lactos as a gift to make your guys happy. No says, Franco – it will establish stability. Power Milk will amend it’s contract with a stipulation that 100% will ultimately go to the heirs of Gonzola Elizalde – they’ll end up with double. Fer hopes he understands completely her father’s decision. Editor: It’s kind of hard to do the math here, and I don’t think Camilo is any better at multiplication than I am.

Avances: Aurora is a great point of interest. Steve tells Franco that he has to cancel his wedding with Erika.

Now that we're in the ultimas semanas, I finally figured out how to post to the sidebar. Thank you Jardinera and Melinama for your joint instructions.

And, I hope someone will recap next week. I will be travelling to the East Coast and will not be available Thursday evening. Thanks.

Thanks for the recap Pasofino. I was having a hard time following the Lactos conversation. Even with a recap I don't see how it makes sense. Oh well...beanie adjustment...

Babs is getting just plain creepy.

I can't believe that Estif would go along with the baptismal record thing. I think once Erika sees the picture of Fr/Ed and Nanda together she will call off the wedding. Wasn't that the plan in the first place?

This comment has been removed by the author.

Connie: I don't know what Erika's reaction to the photo of Fer and Franco will be. Wouldn't you like Chelsea to be your best friend?

Fer and Franco were sort of holding hands - or at least touching hands. Erika might blow up from stress. The baptismal record scenes are somewhat puzzling. I wonder if the secretary knows something that Steve is just about to find out.

Carlos: Damian. Nice guy? That's a stretch. But, in Novelaland you could be on the money.

I've had friends like that and I certainly don't miss them. Nice to your face and stab you when your back is turned. Who needs them!

I'm sorry, I inadvertently deleted my earlier posted comment.Basically I said that I'm thinking (actually hoping that Damien has seen the light and has become a good guy. Not a widely held opinion I'm sure.

Also, that Gardenia seemed inspired by Nanda's little pep-talk, but likely not in the way Nanda intended.

Once again, a great recap, Pasofino.

Carlos

Pasofino, great recap, thank you. You had me cracking up with "Vlad is following Pris in the garage. She tells him to get in the car. They roll the windows down so we can hear better."

I do keep hoping Damian turns it around and is only slightly a jerk.

Thanks for the excellent recap, Pasonfino.

Several people seemed to tell fish stories in this episode. First, Barbara, with her halfway explanation of why she's suddenly friendly with Aurora, followed by asking if Aurora will come away with her. I was hoping Aurora would just say no, but at least she asked for more time. It makes no sense to go away with a woman whom you saw cheating on her husband, who has abused you from day one, all based on one sweet conversation.

Second, Fr/Ed's story to Camilo. Again, Pasofino, you're right, the math doesn't seem to add up. Power Milk doesn't trust the heirs, but will sign an agreement to ultimately give the heirs double? Fortunately for Fr/Ed, Camilo doesn't have a clue. But would Anibal go for this one?

Thanks, Pasofino, great recap!!

What I understood from Franco's explanation to Camilo was that there already was?? or would be?? a clause in the Lactos/Power Milk agreement that 10 years worth of Lactos profits going forward would go directly to the heirs. They just wanted Barbara to be the majority owner of the bienes because of Gonzo's age and that they knew of her steady hand (ha!) on the tiller of the business. He told Caaammmi that these 10 years of profits would be worth much more than the current value of the assets being transferred. Fernanda's face hearing this was wonderful. It's a complete crock, of course, but she was admiring the smooth way he came up with it, especially since he didn't even expect Camilo to be in her office.

It sorta looks like Vlad looking at that file was a red herring. His proposal was just DNA testing of the fetus right now to prove his paternity.

Jarocha, where are you? Does this witness of the same age who would have also been a baby at the same time being able to certify the baptism of a child hold water? (Wow, what a convoluted sentence!)

One more thing. I thought Gardenia really was interested in Fernanda's educational ideas. Sounded like Lactos would pay for her to take these classes while still working there and thus get out of the criada job market and into something better. One more sign of how kind and smart our Fer is.

You're right, Novelera. Even though Gardenia lied to Fer about Fr/Ed's kiss and sexual harrassment and caused her great anguish, Fer turns around and offers her a chance at a better life, and perhaps, a way to get Gardenia out of her and Fr/Ed's life.

By the way, are Margarita, Jacinto, Artemio and Lily on vacation on that yacht used a couple of episodios ago by Fer and Fr/Ed? Haven't seen hide or hair of them lately.....

My impression of Pris's conversation with Vlad was that maybe she was playing him - actually, playing both Vlad and Anibal, hoping one of them will off the other.

As for Damian: he can be nice to Aurora while being pragmatic and dastardly towards Babs at the same time. I think that's how he lives with the bad things that he does. He's nice to a few people once in a while and convinces himself that that makes him a decent person.

Just another crackpot theory!

Thanks for the recap Pasofino. Glad you now know how to post to the sidebar also.

I'm trying to keep focus on the interesting plots as opposed to things like Steve/Cami/Venus. I'm wondering who will discover that Barb is Aurora's mom. First they've got to find out that Barb is really Rebecca S. and then Santi can faint.

Pasofino thanks so much for your fun and informative recaps.

Errika's forging ahead with this wedding with Fr/Ed come h** or high water. Fr/Ed said he wasn't ready as yet to obtain the baptismal certificate so she did go against his wishes. And Esteve's going along with Errika's covert action trying to help Fr/Ed with his looney wedding plans by being a good friend but if he were a good friend he would not want him in a loveless marriage at least on Fr/Ed's part. He and Fr/Ed just want out of Dodge, I guess. Errika is very self centered and insecure and really wants a wedding for self esteem especially since Fr/Ed is the ultimate candidate and she is denying the fact that he doesn't love her. This reminds me of the college dorm. There were too many of these women who were desperate because they were graduating without a prospective husband but then that was eons ago. Hopefully, things have changed now.

You don't have to have a baptism certificate to get married. Catholics marry non-catholics all the time, in the church! They make the church seem to archaic, it makes me crazy.

Muchas gracias Pasafino por una muy interesante versión.
Just a few quick comments before I head out the door for work.. On the one hand I can understand Erika being so infatuated with Ed/Fr that she's missing all the subtle signs and symptoms that those of us looking in from the outside can see. But the thing that I don't understand is how she's clueless to the lack of courtship in this relationship. Most women would require that a man show some affection, take them to romantic places, the beach, the movies, call on the phone, talk for hours. Even if not having sex, show some sort of physical attraction. But if a man was just going along like a puppet in whichever direction I pull the strings, I sure wouldn't be interested in pulling his strings towards the altar.
Next, Aurora puzzling over what Babs interest could be. If someone had treated me the way Babs treated her complete with degrading name calling and being thrown out of the house, the first thing that would come to my mind would be that the person was ready for round two of butt kicking. It's going to be fun seeing her in a future novela playing the part of someone with an adult brain unstead of a doormat.
I can't comment on the scenes with Lovely, because thats when I hit FF.

Who has a baptismal certificate anyway? Why can't you get married if you aren't baptized?

You can get married but you cannot receive the Sacrament of Matrimony unless you are both baptized Catholics.

Ah, I see.

Great recap Pasofino.

I usually don't pay that much attention to the Lactos stuff, most of the time I don't think it makes that much sense.

Novelera I don't think they can use the testimony of a friend to get him to marry, in any case they could probably use the first communion certificate. My grandfather was baptized in secret during the Christian War so there was no record of it and he used his first communion certificate to get married (I have no idea how he did his first communion without a baptize certificate though).

Jarocha

Hombre: Aurora could actually have a brain.

Novelera: Thanks for your comments further clarifying Franco's tale as told to Camilo.

Julie: Pris might be playing Vlad and Anibal, but her survival depends upon Anibal, the abuser.

Molly: More beanie powerneeded.

Alice: Thanks for the dose of insight.

Seems strange that Gonzo wouldn't be trying to convince Camilo, but it's not in the script.

So, Franco, Fernanda, Babs know about an agreement with Powhere Meelk but Gonzo doesn't. I guess Anibal will go for it, since Jr. gets 40% plus Anibal will get more as an heir. And since nothing is on paper, what difference does it make anyway, Babs will be able to do what she wants. destroy the Elizaldes & get out of town with Aurora. I need heavy equipment to adjust my beanie.

I guess Camilo can always get a job as a Chippendale.

"You can get married but you cannot receive the Sacrament of Matrimony unless you are both baptized Catholics." Maybe Erika wants a wedding/mass with communion, in which case FrEd would be denied communion without proof he was baptized a Catholic. Ask me how I know . . .

Ewww, Variopinta, now I have a mental picture of the Orange One on stage with his shirt off. Gag! Damian not so bad. But Camiiii---ack! 8-}

Ok Doris...How do you know?!

Correct Doris, but they can get married in the Church. A non-Catholic will not spontaneously combust near the Host or if they inadvertantly get spalshed with a little Holy water when they are flicking it at everyone. Despite what I try to convice my friends of when they happen to attend Mass with me.

It still has to be a first marriage for both the Catholic and non-Catholic. None of those crazy divorced folks (like me). You only get to recieve the sacrament of marriage once unless you are willing to jump through annulment hoops. Or if your previous spouse has passed away.

Variopinta: I'm with Connie. Double gag here.

Thanks for the great recap!

I'm one of those hoping (against hope?) that Damian has some good waiting to ooze out. Should I be embarrassed that I'm taken in by the squinted eyes behind the glasses? And the mustache, and the voice. Not that handsome = good, but it makes a good story. Sigh ...

-Netgirl from the East Coast

Whether or not they'll let you get married in a Catholic church without doing the sacrament depends VERY much on the, whatchamacallhim, head padre. The parish I grew up in (now defunct) was very welcoming, but my sister's ex-parish was very, very strict about EVERYTHING. As strict as any church in a telenovela!

Yes Julie, sometimes you have to shop around for the right Priest. I'm always surprised when I meet a young one that is uber conservative. I expect them to be a little more with it...go figure!

There is one priest here that my kids love. We are not in his parish, but we go to his church sometimes because its the only time the kids don't complain. You can actually find him on youtube doing his Christmas homily rap. Kids at the mass got it on cell phone. He's a great guy!

Jarocha, don't know if you'll look at this string of comments again, but I find it fascinating that your abuelo had to be baptized in secret during la guerra cristera. In my Spanish class we read a novel called Pensativa por José Goytortua Santos. It was a wonderful novel about a post-Mexican Revolution conflict that I knew nothing about before this book.

There does seem to be latitude....my husband and I, although Protestant, attended a Catholic Marriage Encounter weekend years ago, and the priest there allowed us to participate in Communion, because, as he said, if you're on the weekend, I consider you to be Catholic.

But when we attended a later, "refresher" weekend with a different priest, he would only give us a blessing, not allow us to take Communion.

Individual differences.

The Catholic priest that married us had no problem with doing just the wedding ceremony --- we didn't ask for the full Mass --- and there was no communion because 99% of the guests were not Catholic.

A couple months after we were married, the same priest told my parents to tell me to tell my husband to stop coming to the communion rail, because DH was a baptized Episcopalian; not a Catholic. As IF Jesus himself would care, but I digress . . . NONE of this came up during the 6 prenup sessions.

And now you know why I left the Catholic Church. I'm too open-minded and inclusive.

doris.

Novelera I find it amazing that you have read about la guerra cristera, it is a very obscure chapter of the Mexican history and our textbooks tend to only gloss over that period.

Catholic priests are very different from one another, some are very close-minded and some are quite liberal (one even invited me to the Gay Pride Parade in Toronto), so I think it depends on your luck. I've never been to a wedding without conmunion, it's such a strange concept to me. I've always figured that you can't get married in the catholic church with someone that is not catholic. Turns out I'm wrong. I'm glad about that.

Jarocha

My father was a mining engineer from Minnesota who heard about a big silver mine in Mexico and decided to go explore and that is where he met my mother, married her and spent most of his life working in the mining industry in Mexico. We were all born there and came to the US when it was time to go to school.

But what I started out to say was that my mother was Catholic and he was Episcopalian and they were married in the Catholic Church but not in Mexico because at the time they were married the priests were being persecuted in Mexico so they came to the US to be married.

MEPS In AZ

MEPS,

That is a very interesting story. It seems that this period of Mexican history isn't as talked about as much as other things. Was your father Scandinavian like so many Minnesotans?

I have an unusual religion/wedding story as well. Back in 1968, my husband and I married at a courthouse in Union County, Tennessee. We did this because my family and I were, unlike my husband, Jehovah’s Witnesses. At the time, like Catholics, the Witnesses were very strict on out of faith marriages. When we moved to Boston, Mass, I was told by my Catholic co-workers that I wasn’t married in “the eyes of God” because He didn’t recognize civil ceremonies. I think that there was something about our children would not be "legitimate" or words to that effect. I have always been pretty strong in my core beliefs, so their comments didn't bother me that much. We are Presbyterians now, a more tolerant religion.

Sandy in TN

Jarocha, it doesn't surprise me that la guerra cristera is not emphasized in Mexican schools. It represented a backlash against the revolution. The revolution was strictly anti-clerical because many priests had been complicit with rich landowners in keeping the poor people in their place.

I'm not an expert, but from what I understood about the period, the cristeros were conservative, religious people who were fighting to reinstate the Catholic church to its former position. At the time of the war, baptisms and religious weddings were forbidden and, I believe, priests were forbidden to wear clerical garb outside the confines of the church. The heads of state who participated in the revolution were mostly against the church. The cristeros were eventually defeated.

So, it seems logical to me that anything that would seem to be a different view to the patriotic tales of the revolution, featuring Zapata, Villa, Madero, etc., would not be emphasized to Mexican schoolchildren.

Novelera

Weren't a lot of priests and/or adherents killed during this period of Mexican history?

Sandy in TN

I'm guessing that priests were killed, especially if they sided with the cristeros. In addition to the novel Pensativa I read about this period in Mexican history, there is also a wonderful one by Mario Vargas Llosa called The War of the End of the World about the same war.

The Vargas Llosa book is over 500 pages and was assigned by a substitute one quarter in my long-running advanced Spanish class. Our long-time wonderful teacher from Mexico, Graciela, was ill. I had to cheat and read most of it in English. I can and do read novels in Spanish, but much slower. This one was just too long for me to get enough read for meaningful classroom discussions each week.

Novelera that is all correct, the prosecutions of the priests went to excessive levels.

I think a big factor wich influences the lack of education about that war was that most of the people in the cristeros were poor. They weren't menacing landlords trying to keep their money and properties or even military men. They were poor and hungry and believed their cause to be a fair one. A cause they were willing to fight and died for.

After all, this is a country whose war of Independence was started by a priest holding a flag of the Virgin of Guadalupe. There is a great love for the catholic church and people are always feel the need to protect it.

Up to this day though, the church keeps trying to influence political decisions and I don't think that's right. I agree with that ideal of keeping religious beliefs separated of the goverment and politics.

Jarocha

On reading books in Spanish, it so much easier to read current books than a book set in years past. I have read the history of Mexico in Spanish, don't have the author here where I am baby sitting my grandson, but translating all the weapons, saddlery, and equipment and just generally the life of years ago is impossible. Same with Anna Karenina, impossible in Spanish. From here on out, I only want current books!

Sandy in TN

You're probably right, Sandy, although the Vargas Llosa book was published in 1981. The vocabulary wasn't too bad; it was just very long.

Last quarter (Spring) we finished Doña Bárbara by Rómulo Gallegos. I loved the book. It's about life on the llanos (or plains) of Venezuela. It was published in 1927, and had lots of odd words in it, slang, bird names, tree names, etc. One of our classmates created a special dictionary of "llanerismos" for us and posted it on his web site. What a guy!

Jarocha, your point is interesting. In the Pensativa book by Goytortua Santos the cristeros were well-off hacendados, as I remember it. But surely they must have recruited poor people with strong religious beliefs to fight.

There were hacendados pulling strings in that war, but the people who died in battles were mostly poor:

This site has some interesting pictures, but be alerted that some may be a little bit too disturbing:

http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/cristero-1.htm

If you prefer no to see the those too graphic, this ones are those that I find the most representative of the cristeros as I got to know them by stories of older generations:

Thanks Jarocha,

Very interesting. When I get home I will check out the sites. I'm glad to know more about this.

Sandy

Jarocha,

Do you live in Mexico?

Sandy

Jarocha, I'm just about to leave for an overnight camping trip, but I wanted to take the time to thank you so much for your very informative posts on the Cristero War. The photos were amazing. Because of getting ready to leave, I haven't had time to really review what you sent, but you may be sure I'll do so when I get back tomorrow evening.

This blog has so many interesting people posting. It's the very first place I go when I turn on my computer!!!

Jarocha,

The photos are incredible, especially "three generations of cristeros". Two of the generations are babies!!

I might try Pensitiva, such an interesting period of Mexican history. I'll see if they have it on Amazon.

Novelera, have a great time on your camping trip!

Sandy in TN

Sandy, I do live in México. The "Three generations of cristeros" picture is definitely impresive. Children were at times helping the people fighting the wars.

Novelera, I hope you have fun on your camping trip. I also enjoy this site inmensely. You are all fantastic people!.

Jarocha
