Gancho Oct. 21 - Trouble in River ..er.. Mexico City or while the cat's away, the mice will get themselves all messed up

Well I had awful reception tonight so endup having to get most of this from the net without subtitles or clear images. Just couldn't get my TV to work right until the very end of course. Plus I'm super busy getting work done as I'll be out of town for the next two weeks on my way to Mexico. Captain offered to post a header and everything for me, but if anyone wants to put forth a recap of sorts feel free to let me or her know. I will not have internet or Univision after Saturday but thanks to Hombre, I will try to download the episodes to take with me!! So anyway tonight is a super quicky...have to get back to work. But it was a goody for sure...I'm not sure if I'm right on all the locales so anyone can feel free to pipe up if you recognize them.

Estrella enters into the bordello and finds Aldo’s room. We see that cops eat doughnuts in Mexico too. Cristian and Pau happen to be hanging out near the location when the broadcast about the corruption of a minor comes on.

Alo sings Estre’s praises to Estrella without him knowing it. Until she comes out from behind the curtain. They chat under the kick me sign.

Coni and Jero laugh at how the police are on their way to the bordello.

Cris parades all the women into the cars. Whoops they find Estre and Aldo. Pau didn’t know she worked here. Pu tries to keep Cris from taking them away. He is not swayed, bet he would be for a few hundred bucks. He continues loading them into the car while Ivan and Beto look on.

Mau and Mona are learning about the Mayans I think at the Convento de San Bernadino or Museo San Rocque in Valladolid near Merida. He tells her he loves her in Mayan. Ilyakumetch or so. She wonders if there are two rooms, he says don’t be silly we’ve slept in the same bed many times, it will be fine. We see him put her in bed and lie fully clothed next to her. Damn her cleavage looks sexy…

Aldo gets out of jail courtesy of Sal, but Estre well she’s going to have a harder time since she was not the minor. Aldo says he won’t go without her. Sal tells him he is not in a position to demand anything, only to obey and he jeopardized the adoption again.

Tere, making sandwiches with Bimbo bread yells at Ivan. He claims innocence, but accepts responsibility. Even Luisa is cold to him.

Estre tells Aldo to act like the man he wants to be, go home and be with his sisters. Estre cries.

M&M enjoy breakfast in Merida. Coni calls to wish him fun and that she will watch his kids. Mau hangs up on her. She realizes Sal hasn’t called him. She is with the DUMB squad, I think someone called them, at the judges.

Nieves is going to bring Estre tortas. Beto is disagreeing with her. He wears a soy Puerco pero no trumpudo shirt. He denies bringing the boy to the bordello. She sees through him and yells at him for corrupting minors.

M&M go shopping for local clothes, go on a boat ride in the Celestun Biosphere mangrove swamp to see the flamingos.

Aldo goes home and gets his punishment. Sal warns him not to mistep. Coni shows up with the judge and Sal wonders how she knows already and figures she’s messed up in this injecting poison, of Course Coni says it was a casual meeting up with the judge. The judge thinks poorly of Mau. Sal defends him. Coni agrees, but the judge says he has proof and shows off the pics of Aldo with Estre and Lu in lingerie. Judge says Mau lost custody for sure and the kids have to go somewhere.

More M&M on boat. Aldo says he’s not going anywhere. Tere defends Mau. I van shows up and gets blamed and slapped for taking the pics of Luisa!!!!!

Estre enjoys Nieves’ tortas, and Nieves says she’s there because Mona can’t be. She does talk down to Estre too, that her life is a mess. She tells Nieves she loves Aldo like no one else and he loves her the same, but Nieves says the age difference is too much and she could almost be his Ma and she worries about Aldo still wanting her when he gets to be her age. Estre worries about M&M fighting over this.

Aldo attacks Ivan too. Tere throws him out of the house and Coni is mildly amused and surprised. Coni tells Sal th kids will never be ok with him. Sal says he’ll try to find Mau. Aldo cries this is all his fault and Coni hugs him that she’ll do what she can to keep them to gether.

M&M are in the square I think in Valladolid noting how much they miss and love the kids who look at her as a Ma.

She grew up without a Ma and Pa and will do all she can so the kids don’t get taken away. They go off and we see that he leaves his jacket, which we later learn has his cell phone in it.

Sal gets only voicemail so calls Gabi to leave him a message. He is short with her. Tere is destroyed. Sal tries to comfort her. Coni says she’ll talk to the judge to try and get them a little more time.

Mau takes Mona to the caves, maybe Cenote Dzitnup? Hard to know but it’s quite famous. There he proposes to her, with a ring too. The water is super clear. She says she was born to be with him and of course she’ll marry him. Kisses and cut.

Great title, Kris. So sorry you had all those problems. It's not fair, is it.

I thought the same thing you did...Monita looked especially lovely and sexy as she curled up to sleep.

Loved the scene between the hidden Estrella and Aldo. He won her over when he said her body was to die for but it was really her heart and her noble character that he loved. What "sadder but wiser" girl could resist that.

You're going to Mexico!!!!! Have a wonderful time...(and I'll try not to be green with envy.)

PS Thanks to Jarocha and Anonymous 10:02 for the translations of puzzling sayings in Tuesday night's recap.

"Peinar la cotorrita" means stroke the feathers of the parrot/in other words to have sex

"chota" is a slang term for cops and "metale chota" would mean "Step on it, cop" urging Christian to drive lickety-split to the airport.

Many thanks to both of you, and I put the corrections in the recap.

Kris: Thanks for your perseverance and dedication in posting this despite all the problems. Hope you have a wonderful vacation and safe travels.

I wondered last night if Estrella has any family? I really felt for her in jail, alone and endearingly vulnerable. It seems that she's always been more or less on her own.

Connie crossed the line for me last night. The photo op of Aldo and Estrella is rather damning but she's displaying amazingly flawed logic if she thinks Luisa isn't going to speak up about who took her pictures. Not only did she crush Aldo and break up Mau's family, she's now succeeded in breaking up Teresa and Ivan's little family as well. Blech.

Judy, may I borrow your "Miss Crankypants" expression this morning? :)

Thanks Kris, this episode was so appealing to the eye, what with all those scenes shot in the Yucatan. I think that we are going to have to make a trip there soon.

I would think that the photos of Luisa would be incriminating for Coni since they were taken in her shop with Luisa wearing some of the items from the boutique.

I do have one little quibble with you, however, and that is that I think that Cristian is pretty much incorruptible. After all, for him,"La ley es la ley," and he feels bound by duty.

I got a big kick out of Estrella checking those rooms, seeing her reaction with each. And did ya'll notice the handcuffs hanging from the ceiling from a chain in Aldo's room? "Oh no! Oh yes! Oh dear!"

Kris, I envy you and your trip. We'll hold the fort down while you're away. Have an absolutely wonderful time.

Carlos

Kris, thanks for the recap (loved the title). Hope you have fun in Mexico.

I feel sorry for Estrella, too. If this were a serious, heavy melodrama, her character might start drinking or doing other destructive behavior. Hopefully, everything will be cleared up, and she'll be out of jail by next episode.

Mau (and Moni) sure have some good self-control, sleeping like that, and not going any further, especially in such a romantic locale.

I hate the judge! He doesn't look like a slimeball, but he's apparently accepting money to change the custody, he's not questioning where the pictures came from, and there's no hearing, no chance for Mau to respond on his own or with a lawyer. They just send the kids to a group home, and don't fight it, or the full force of "the law" will come down. I think they did this a few times before, too, once with a social worker, and once with someone from the judge's office. It doesn't seem like a fair system to me, that they have no evidence, no hearings, etc.

wOW...Here I go again, missing details. Was so fixated on the dialogue, I missed the handcuffs. Oh no, oh yes, oh dear and OH MY!!!

Thanks, if I have time I may be able to post some pics later, have to see what I managed to grab inbetween tuner blackouts.

Judy, I was able to skim your recap and your title is just hysterical!!

I wrote "kickme" sign, but those are the referred to handcuffs. Frankly, I couldn't tell if they didn't say "lick me" instead, that would be a bit raunchy, but since it's English, well the same impact just isn't there.

I agree Cris manages to evade the overarching stereotype of cops in Mexico being completely prone to corruption. I made that little joke cynically jabbing at the entire law enforcement institution there, I guess not so much at him. Generally, though I depressingly have to snicker at his character in that regard and remind myself this is a telenovela and fantasy land.

Sadly, an honest cop is usually only a dead one, so who can blame them.

I have friends who are the lucky ones because they managed to get themselves and their families out of the country and managed still to actually gain asylum here or in Canada because they were forced to break "the law" on behalf of powerful wealthy drug cartels and the like, and if they did not continue gleefully doing the dirty work, their families would be picked off like fleas on a mangy dog or worse, tortured in unimaginable ways.

We are very lucky here.

What a frightening insight, Kris. I have heard scary things over the years about the police in Mexico. Some folks with a travel company were raped on the beach (nighttime stroll) and nothing was done...because the rapists were cops. Not a reassuring picture.

And a friend traveling alone in Mexico in the 60's had a man crawl through the transom opening of her hotel door not once but twice! (not easily discouraged). She was also very unflappable so she just kicked him out each time.

Evidently women are viewed strictly as targets. No wonder they have "women only" taxis now.

This adoption situation is just ridiculous. Mauricio has been waiting for months for things to be finalized, and now the judge is inhumane enough to just take the kids away (and instantly grant an adoption by Constanza, it looked like in the avances)?! Even if the judge is corrupt, you'd think he'd go to Mauricio for a better deal.

Those handcuffs...all I could see was "ck me" which gave a few options...saucy place, that bordello. Not nearly as gross as some of the icky places I've had to visit for work, though.

Once again, Julia, you tantalize us...

I have a cousin who was a probation officer in Cincinnati and she was familiar w/ icky places, too. Is that kinda sorta your line of work?

Agree w/ Hombre that this Senor Juez is a real piece of "work." But one is reminded that lawyerdom is the garden from which juez'es are harvested.

Mike, you DO know Julia had to visit a bordello for work, don't you? Seriously. She's an engineer and evidently there was some structural problem that needed investigating. At least that's how I remember it. Anyway, Julia can tell this story better than I.

Judy, no, I hadn't heard that. Besides, Julia said "icky placeS" (plural).

Julia: dish! Somehow I don't associate "bordello" with "engineering structural issues." Though at my age I find the latter more interesting than the former, except for humor purposes. For example:

"This hooker comes up to me and says, 'I'll do anything you want for $50.'" "Fine", I tell her, "go paint my house!"

Ta dum bum.

Shoot, Julia, come to think of it, you are probably right and I was in denial because in taht moment I couldn't for the life of me imagine they would stage with such a blatant prop, but again, it is written in English, muting the impact, and this is Mexico where such things are more funny than offensive, so that would make the most sense, of course!!!!

Well, not an actual bordello. I'm pretty sure those are illegal here, so if they had needed investigating they would have cleared out before we got there. But I have visited a porn shop and some strip clubs, including one with a shower on the stage. It's pretty funny, because we're just there to look at the building, so we're measuring and taking notes, but as soon as we pull out the cameras most of the clientele will sort of turn around and slide behind the furnishings. I just sort of turn off my ears when we have to walk down the corridors with the...booths, but one of my co-workers (26-year-old guy) couldn't stop snickering.

Mostly, though, those places are just run-down and nasty. I was surprised Beto of all people would pick one that seemed so much cleaner.

Thank you for the recap Gancho. I love your title. Have a fun trip!

I know the law here is mostly corrupt, but I could believe Christian as he seems (like most of these characteres) to live in his own world. Plus, I've encountered nice cops on the street (who helped me find my puppy when it got lost once, not that deal with them regularly) so I try not to think about how corrupted they really might be or I'd probably get depressed.

Did anybody notice Estrella's Argentinian accent in her scene with Aldo at the bordello? I loved their scene there and afterwards when he hugged her through the barrs at the prison cell.

I also loved when Nieves went to give Estrella a torta. I like that deep down Nieves does care about her.

Judy I forgot to put a link to show the panuchos yesterday, most states have their own version, but Yucatán's are the most popular, here's a link to how they make them:

http://www.yucatanliving.com/food/how-to-make-panuchos-and-salbutes.htm

Jarocha

I love it when Estrella does different accents. Last night she was telling Aldo she was from the Pampas and kept saying "Pampas, Pampas" over and over in seductive tones. So funny.

Ay yi yi...what a link, Jarocha! That recipe sounded awesome and hilariously sexist. No men were used or harmed in the making of this extraordinary meal. Just women with tiny hands...and a machete.

Mind you, when my parents were growing up on farms in the early part of the 20th, yes, you did go out in the backyard and kill a chicken for dinner. Lambs, calves etc. were slaughtered on the grounds also, to the great distress of my mother. I'm just as glad to do my shopping in the supermarket.

And yes, I did notice Estrella's Argentinian accent. And she kept using "vos" which helped to place it also.

Julia, forgive me. I knew I was messing up somehow...porn shop..different from bordello....still a good story. Didn't realize you had to do you inspection when the clients were there. Ewwwwwww...

Judy, my dad used to buy a crate of chickens and kill 'em in the side yard. We kids had to run them down and take them around the house for my mom and grandma to scald the feathers off. My poor mom, born in Havana, stuck in WV, and having to 'do up' chickens. Dad hunted squirrels and rabbits but Mom made him clean them! ...and the fish!

Forgetful me! The recap was great as usual, Kris. Loved the title.
Poor Aldo, my thoughts are that he only thinks of sex once a day - all day, for the next several years! Estrella was so sweet, hope she gets out of the hoosegow tonight.

I try not to think about how corrupt the legal system is here, too. When I was in high school the mayor was the father of a girl in my class, and she would tell me stories about parties he would have at their house with the police officers and the drugs they had confiscated.

But there were good officers, too. One was a friend of my parents' and although he was pretty straightlaced and definitely not abusing the office, he wasn't as strict as Cristian. At our barbeques he never stopped my brother and his friends from igniting their illegal fireworks and pipe bombs...he just supervised so they wouldn't kill themselves or burn down the neighborhood.

Oh Emilia...your poor mom. Well, those were the days. I remember being horrified when my mom and dad told me that after a chicken's head was cut off, they still ran around for a while. Oh my. Back to the vegetables.
+ + +

You're right, Julia. Corruption is not confined to any one country. It's just an aspect of human nature, alas. There are safe places and good people everywhere....and the opposite. Getting through life unscathed is partly a matter of good luck and good timing.

Your conversation about murdering chickens reminded me of my mom and grandmother (Mema) who would tie their feet to the clothesline and then off with their heads! But Judy's observation about them apparently clinging to life even after execution reminded me of the fact that I watch too much television. There was this great (seriously) documentary on channel 8 (PBS) called the Natural History of the Chicken in which there was a segment chronicling the tragic life of Mike (no relation to our Mike) the Headless Chicken. It's a wonderful, strange world we inhabit.

Carlos

Judy I thought those instructions would be fun.

My mom's family has a small business selling chicken so I've heard all those horrific stories about how they are killed. Sometimes it makes me wish I was a vegetarian, if only I had the strenght to restrain myself.

Jarocha

Jarocha, I say embrace your carnivorocity. There is nothing quite like the experience of a prime dry-aged strip steak barely seared in a white-hot skillet, nicely caramelized almost black on the surface and dripping blood from the red interior. Beats tofu any day. If you haven't clicked on Mike, you must do so. I'm suspicious that he was done in for the insurance.

Carlos

Well, Carlos, THIS Mike agrees with you that there are few things finer than a steak just as you describe. Particularly when served with an unobtrusive baked potato and a cold draft. Used to enjoy a whole jalapeno with that, too.
