Gancho Thursday 1/14/10 - This looks like a job for Supermonkey!!

Carlos, I couldn't resist transforming your comment into tonight's title. I hope you don't mind. Anyway, my other ideas were in extremely poor taste so this was my only hope.

Folks, it was a tough night tonight in Gancholand, maybe the worst ever. A good thing happened, and then there was all the other stuff...

We start with wash day in the barrio, Ivan's not doing it right, etc. Then we move to a scene that sends a chill into any woman's heart, hell I'm sure it sends a chill into most men's hearts too. Estrella is being held down by two strong lads who want to have a "little fun" with her. They didn't come to this sewer (cloaca) for nothin' and they want somethin'. Monita, at the wash basin with Ivan, doesn't take Estre's cries for help seriously but finally, "Ahi voy, I'm coming!" Monita sets down the wash and runs into Estre's house.

Hooray Super Monita! The stupid baboons think she's come to join the fun, "Fresh meat!" they say, but our strong little monkey pulls the schoolboys off of her friend and schools them right proper. A few punches to their faces and stomachs sets them packing. As they run away whining for mommy Aldo rushes in wondering what in the heck his "pals" are doing there.

Estre sobs to Aldo that this is what his bragging to the whole school has led to, his friends thing she's a slut (golfa) and they tried to rape her.

Over at Grupo Sermeño Gabi and Sal are thrilled for Mau. Gabi blabs a mile a minute that she's so happy Mau and Moni have resolved their differences. She's sure her romance and love with Salvador are contagious and soon everyone will catch it. Poor Sal can't seem to get a word in but no matter, Gabi is saying it all. Mau tells them his divorce with Coni is war but he'll win. He says nobody and nothing will come between him and Valentina. Oh dear...anvil time. But at least Gabi and Sal are happy at last. Right? Right?

Estrella, who was unable to defend herself against the wannabe rapists, now uses her strength to lash out against Aldo. Because he bragged about her intimate life they now have nothing to talk about. "Largate!" she screams! Of all the ways to tell someone to beat it in Telenovelalandia "largate" seems to be the worst. Aldo tearfully tries to explain but Estrella is on her own tear. She yells at Moni to throw the kid out (sácalo) and Moni finally convinces him to leave. Estre screams "Largate!!! I'm not pregnant with your baby!" as she pushes him out and slams the door shut. She cries on Moni's shoulder that she thought he was grown up but he's just an immature brat (escuincle). This was a tough scene where nobody came out a winner. However it could have gone much worse for our Estrella so let's be thankful for that.

Back at GS it's revealed that Sal plans to travel to Venezuela tomorrow for business. Tonight even simple facts like this seem sinister. Gabi butts in and starts yacking again, this time about their suspicions of Jeronimo and Oscar's shady dealings. Sal thinks Gabi talks too much and should come up for air. Then when she tries to add her two pesos worth about Jero he tells her to shut it, he knows just a little more about business than she does. (Then why did you sign Jero's contract Sal? And when did you become suspicious? Oh yeah, it was AFTER Gabi expressed her suspicions.) Sal tells Mau he's suspicious of Jero and Oski's great deal (ganga). Yes, he signed their documents but he arranged it so they can't have any money until after Licenciado Araujo investigates and reports back this afternoon.

Gabi stops Pau on her way out and asks her to deliver her wedding invitations, or maybe bachelor party invites, to all her pals in the hood. Pau is envious and bummed cuz Chris avoids marriage talk. Gabi tells her to have confidence in herself. Pau also speaks a decent "Very good thank you" in English as evidence her classes in English are working. She talks about being promoted to secretary to the president but Gabi gently smacks her back down to recepcionista. Anything but the janitorial closet should do.

Jero and Oski, fresh from their failed visit to the bank, question Sal about the lack of funding, what's the problem, does Sal need more details (pormenores)? Sal says the answer is easy, he doesn't trust them. He needs to investigate. If everything is OK then tomorrow the bank will release the money, BUT if not watch out.

Oski runs after Sal with a letter opener but of course Sal is gone. They sit down and try to figure out what to do next. This is a problem, if Sal and Mau discover the deal is Monita's neighorhood there will be hell to pay and millions are at stake.

Speaking of the hood, Beto comes home to find his ma getting ready to go to Gabi's despedida. I think she means bachelor party (despedida soltera). She's still got her baby bottle earrings on and is fishing for compliments on her getup. Mau joins them and Nieves leaves the men alone. Beto sits down to tell Mau his problem...

Gabi and Sal again? They sure are getting a lot of screen time tonight. She makes a point of saying she won't see him later that night because it's her bachelor party. Again, an innocent statement that sounds sinister.

Beto tells Mau that Coni has asked him to help find proof that Mau is Furia Enmascarada. As if that's not bad enough he has other news. Beto asks Mau did he know that Monita's mom is alive? Cara impactada de Mauricio.

Mau asks Beto why does he think Moni's ma is alive? Beto says Constancia saw and told him. In fact she bumped right into her. (Hah, nice choice of words, little does he know.) Beto is supicious of our dim hero's reaction and immediately suspects Mau already knew. I think hanging out with Coni is making Beto smarter or maybe just suspicious because he reasons that Mau must have helped Isabel. Beto wants to know how Mau could hide this and Mau wants to know how much Coni knows.

Again with the Gabi and Sal. They're out to dinner making goo goo eyes and discussing their wedding. Sal apologizes for wasting so much time and Gabi says no importa they have forever ahead of them. Oh no, oh yes, oh crap! He tells her that he leaves early in the morning so don't worry about him; he calls her the future Mrs. Ulloa, his savior (salvador) and the love of his life. Clearly they are doomed as evidenced by their perfect happiness.

Beto refuses to listen to Mau because Mau knew! He knew how Moni felt and said nothing? Mau explains that Isabel had him in her hands. Isa hates Monita and he felt it would be better if Moni thought her mother were dead than if she knew her mother was alive and hated her. Mau gets a bad pain in his stomach and Beto asks him if he needs to take a dump (dar portaza a la rata, we've seen this before). Like I said before, I don't write it I just translate it. If Mau were a female he would surely be pregnant, but he's not so what new diabolical plot line to our writers have in store for us? Anyway, Mau tell Beto that they have to work together to keep Monita from finding out.

Back at Grupo Sermeño Sal tells Gabi not to do anything crazy and she happily and ignorantly leaves after a brief PDA. Licenciado Arauja is there and confirms Sal's, supicions, the plans are false and the property is a neighborhood with families. The pics those slimeballs showed Sal were of another property. He hands Sal the real pictures and, oddly, Sal has a black and white flashback of this very colorful neighborhood. In his colorless recollection Gabi comments what a lovely neighborhood it is and what friendly people live there.

If any of you readers imbibe now would be a good time to pour yourself a stiff one. Be it wine, whiskey, tea or anything else, get it now.

Oski, waiting in front of the building, answers his phone. It's Jeronimo who is bugging him every five minutes. Oski tells Jero that the licenciado is inside with Sal and surely they will figure out the the property is Monita's neighborhood then this plan will be their downfall (nuestra derrota). Oski insists he will find a way to make sure Sal isn't a hindrance to them. Suddenly Oski sees Isabel walk into the building. I guess he recognizes her.

Licenciado Araujo leaves and as the elevator doors open Isabel walks in asking for Mauricio. She says she is Isabel lopez, the mother of Valentina. She tells Sal she is more alive than ever and Mauricio knows it. Witch.

Outside, Oski pays off Araujo's taxi driver to leave. He sees Araujo, says sorry your taxi had to leave and can he give him a ride? Clearly Oski's slimy reputation precedes him because Araujo refuses. Oski says they need to talk so Arauja had better join him for better or worse. Araujo refuses because Oski and Jero are slime and he suggests Oski get himself a good lawyer. Holy Crap, as Araujo walks away Oski grabs him and smashes his head against the wall once, twice, thrice. "Nobody's going to get me!" yells Oski. Araujo crumples leaving a smear of blood on the wall. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot????

Sal tells Isa he's Mau's confidante. Why is her business with Mau so mysterious? He can only imagine it's nothing good. Sal presses until Isa answers that she and Mau had a contract...and he helped her fake her death. Satisfied?

Mau tells Beto that Isa isn't a good person, she hates Monita. Beto asks then why did she come around asking forgiveness? Because she was very sick and needed a marrow (medula) transplant from her own daughter. Beto thinks this sounds like a friggin' telenovela what with the MEDUSA transplant and all. (Good malapropism there Beto.) Mau tells Beto that he fooled Monita for her own good. Isa is cold blooded and Moni can't know her mother is alive.

Oski roughly throws the limp Licenciado in his trunk. He sees Coni drive up and hides behind his car, the little rat.

Sal has a hard time wrapping his head around Isa's comment. He starts rubbing his arm and heart; Sal's heart attack is pretty much right on cue. Isa doesn't notice, she leaves her number with Sal to give Mau. Meanwhile Sal is losing feeling in his left hand. He tries to follow Isabel while rubbing his left arm and accuses her of only coming for more money. If that's what it's about just tell him how much she wants. Naturally Coni walks in and overhears. Oddly neither of the women notice Sal is having a serious attack. Are they blind? Isa tells Sal that Mau has 24 hours to contact her. She has ice for blood and does a great job of ignoring Coni.

Isa leaves and Sal grabs Coni to prevent her from following. Coni pushes him away and she starts to leave too. By this time Sal can hardly stand, he tries to call Mau and gets weepy Aldo. Where's your dad?

Poor Aldo is still sobbing over Estre. Sal wants Mau's number and writes it down. Of course evil Coni listens and snatches the phone away and eats the number. Hey, shouldn't she be over her food cravings by now?

More Mau and Beto with Mau asking Beto not to judge him before he knows all the truth. Mau flashes back to the creepy scene where Isa explains she loathes Monita because will always remind Isa of the horrible thing that happened to her. Monita is the product of that violation. Isa gives her word that if Mau helps Isa then Isa will never come back. After the operation she'll disappear. The scene goes on MUCH longer but we get the point. Mau tells Beto that's the only reason he agreed to help, so that Monita would never know how her mother really felt about her.

Sal is clearly having a heart attack (or stroke?) and now Oski walks in to further agitate our Sal. Stupid Sal, instead of sitting, continues to scream at Oscar and tells him he'll see him and Jero in jail. Finally Coni looks concerned and asks him to calm down. Of all the dumb things, Sal decides to give Oski a punch. Of course Oski starts beating Sal. Coni tries to call for help but Oski grabs the phone out of her hand as Sal falls to the floor. Coni runs to Sal, quickly runs through her litany of excuses and concludes with "Forgive me Salvador, forgive me!"

Sigh...end of episode.

On a brighter note, I spoke to Schoolmarm Jeanne a couple of days ago and she learned a couple of new dichos that I'll share with you:

Yo no soy uno por poner un alacrán en la espalda = Can't pull one over on me, I'll keep a close eye on the situation (I'm not someone to put a scorpion on my back)

La persona no ha nacido que puede contar mis muelas = The person hasn't been born who can put one over on me. (The person hasn't been born who can count my molars)

Thanks, Cap'n, for your recap. Yikes! Another DARK episode. And I came over to Gancho for a little light relief...

The only lite thought I can post is that I figured out just who Mau reminded me of—it's been driving me crazy. Tonight I realized that he reminds me of Red, my very first, very sweetest, very intellectually challenged Irish Setter. Same soulful eyes, same silky hair that trembles artfully when he shakes his head. Red's was a soul without guile, just as Mauricio's appears to be. But bless him, he could barely remember the way to the food bowl and simple doggie tricks were completely beyond him. When his best pal, a Boston Terrier, would do tricks and roll over and tuen a summersault in the air, Red would just flop down next to him and wait for the treat's be be passed out. He was so pretty and sweet he got a treat just for looking good.

I hope Mau doesn't get in trouble when he secret is discovered...

Oooh, I could hardly watch the show tonight. I thought last night's episode was difficult to watch, but two days in a row have been unbearable! I'm glad things didn't go any further with Estrella. That was torture to even think about.

It's so sad that Aldo was stupid enough to do his bragging with his buddies, but even more distressing that Katia pulled the trick she did. I was beginning to like her and thought she had potential, but it seems that her sister's ways have somewhat rubbed off on her.

What the heck is Isabel doing back? (Not that we didn't suspect she would pop up again...)She is definitely giving Coni a run for villainess of the year! And why does Coni always seem to pop up when she can catch something that will hurt someone else? When the elevator doors opened and she walked in to Grupo Sermeno, I thought,"No puede ser!" She of all people. Why would she show up at night anyway? That was a bit of a stretch--just too convenient of the writers to have her show up when Sal is having a heart attack, getting Mau's new number, and talking about Isabel.

Oscar is even more callous and self-serving than I thought. He seemed a bit surprised and disgusted at what he did to the Licenciado, but then recovered quickly and was ready for his next victim: Sal. How convenient for him that Sal just happened to be having a heart attack.

Poor Sal! Is he dead? He didn't look like he was breathing. Poor Gabi!

Poor Sylvia! What a downer you had to recap tonight. Yet you did so with much clarity, expression, and fortitude. Boy this show really needs a little Xime and Rolu. It's getting very depressing! Too many anvils coming down at once...

Good morning, Sylvia. Thanks for a rippin' good read. The title serves nicely. I whole-heartedly approve. As I was watching my heart went out to you. Moni making quick work of dispensing with the naughty boys was satisfying though I wish she'd called on Cristian to haul their sorry butts off to jail. It might have given us a chance to look in on our favorite dope-dealer, Chubi.

Wow, how things are changing. First they change the time without consulting us and now this unanticipated stroll though the valley of the shadow of death which I also don't recall being consulted about. Jarocha was right when she said thing will get dark. Guess we'd best all hitch up our britches and get ready for some very stormy weather. Judy, looks like you were more right when you pointed out the storm clouds gathering.

Elna June and Deb, good morning. Elna June, Mao as an Irish Setter. Right on target. My dog training mentor said that they get lost at the end of the leash. Our first family dog, Curly was an Irish Setter and a real love. When my mother would scold my brother and me, Curly would get between her and us and utter a barely audible protective growl. She was a hunter and the mother of Rosy, the best hunting dog I ever knew, though dad said Curly was even better.

Deb, I lay that whole debacle at Aldo's feet. I'm disappointed in Katia, but I'm furious with Aldo. Oscar is a big disappointment to me. I flahed back to more innocent times when Jero asked him if he'd ever killed anyone. I forget Jero's analogy but it now seems so ironic. I fear now that Oscar, though he seemed momentarily appalled at what he did, has quickly developed a taste for blood.

Carlos, hoping for happier times by Monday.

I was in full tantrum mode last night. First the network hijacked our show, tossing it to the afternoon. Then turns out the writers hijacked it, turning it from delightful comedy to gruesome tragedy.

I was miserable all during the sweet cappuchino time with Gaby and Salvador. When he said something like I could die right now I'm so happy and she cheerily responded that they had years and years of happiness ahead of them....well, my heart sank.

And the long long time of him cluctching his chest, his arm, clenching and unclenching his left hand...oh, absolute misery! Déja vu all over again.

Beyond shock when Oscar slammed the lawyer against the wall and that huge red smear of blood appeared. I don't watch shows like this! Ugh ugh ugh.

Why is Isabel back? She probably wants more money. From the looks of her, she's been living high on the hog and expects a new infusion of cash to keep quiet.

ELNA JUNE-love your description of Red...who would get a treat just for looking good. Yep, that's our Mau.

DEB - Y'know, I didn't even feel sorry for Aldo. He should never have bragged about his conquest to his pals. Katia's act was despicable, but she is Estrella's enemy so it's not surprising.

Aldo is Estrella's lover and should have protected her rather than betraying her by boasting about their intimacies. Now he's reaping the consequences, that's all. And the consequences to her could have been horrendous...they already are in terms of her feelings.

This is a growing up time for Aldo. The first step was physical. The next step will be realizing the consequences of his carelessness and not acting that way the next time he falls in love.

Hi Carlos. Looks like we were writing at the same time. And I see you agreed with me about Aldo. What's the saying in Spanish?--Caballeros no tengan memoria. He needs to learn that one.

Oh, and Sylvia...I'm in such a snit I forgot to thank you for a wonderful recap, written with humor when possible and also for Jeanne's dichos. I spoke with her by telephone yesterday and she told them to me also, but the cell phone connection was poor and I wasn't quite sure of the spelling. Muchas gracias amiga. I'm so proud of the way she is serving as interpreter for her pastor in this situation. Wow!

Sylvia, your recap, unlike the episode, was a joy to read. It was sensitive, insightful and intuitve. You gave us the truth but cloaked it with beautifully written words. Once again you transformed bitter dregs into sweet nectar. Gracias, amiga.

I loved your "largate" explanation which is completely true. Appreciated the embedded vocabulary and dichos.

elna june, I smiled at your Mau/Irish setter comparison. Soulful indeed!

Deb, Carlos and Judy, there is much blame to go around for Estrella's near rape and several that are culpable. Aldo's bragging was inappropriate and hurtful. How could he tarnish the reputation of the woman he loves? I hold Katia equally culpable however as her intent in spreading the lie was malicious. I agree this is probably the end of Estrella and Aldo. This will be a hard, deeply regretted lesson for Aldo and should certainly hasten his journey to maturation.

As for our dear Sal, I am hoping for many loving, sun drenched happy days ahead for he and Gabi.

I do however hold out no hope whatsoever for Isabel. Has she reared her ugly head again for money?

I'm out until Wednesday. Wishing everyone a safe and happy weekend as we remember the great Dr. Martin Luther King.

Diana

Good morning all. Elna June I absolutely love your Irish Setter comparison to Mau. I say Yes Yes Yes! It's perfect. I guess you've noticed we love to make animal comparisons on our recaps.

Lest it sound as if I don't have a life I'll admit that I have given last night's episode a lot of thought. I was numb during and after doing the recap, and the only way to power through it was to be rather objective and uninvolved. This was the hardest one yet for this TN.

My first thought was that Oscar has really done it this time. So far we have only seen him attempt and bungle murder, the bungling largely due to Jeronimo. Oski is much more effective on his own. So if the Licenciado is dead then Oski is a premeditated murderer.

Isabel is also a murderer, she doesn't know it but she killed Betito.

Deb, you are so right, how does Coni always end up at the right moment that will serve her purposes? However last night could be different. Oski has killed (?) the Licenciado, he was involved in Sal's heart attack and we don't know Sal's status yet, now Coni has shown up and what will he do about her? Coni, you are going to have to be fast on your feet tonight, that's all I can say.

Judy and Carlos, I still feel very sorry for Aldo. He helped set in motion the horrible thing that happened to Estrella but he didn't make those horrid boys do what they did nor did he control Katia's vile machinations. But it doesn't matter what I think, Estrella blames him and I probably would too in her position. Bottom line, I agree that it's growing up time for Aldo. If he loses Estrella forever he will blame himself and that's appropriate. I hope she's OK.

Finally, thanks everyone for all your support. This was a difficult one!!

Can we talk about food or is it too early?

Sylvia, even when I was sniveling mocoso, hearing other guys boast about their conquests would almost make me want to fight. Maybe my love and respect for the women in my life, mom, g-mom, aunts, cousins, teachers, mom's friends, brought out a fiercely protective instinct when ever I would hear such talk. Such betrayal seemed unthinkable to me. I was furious with Aldo when he first began boasting.I think we all knew something bad would come of it, though this dark turn was more than I expected. Judy absolutely has it right,

"Caballeros no tengan memoria."

I went back to check the late posts and found this charming quote from our favorite Mexicana, Jarocha:

"Elna June: I started studying english in secondary school and then high school. This past summer I asisted a summer english program at the Toronto University in Canada."

Almost surely she meant attended.
How many times have I used a Spanish word to mean what a similar English word means. An early lesson on my Spanish CD sternly warned against using introducir instead of presentar. Jarocha, thanks for being human.

Carlos

Jarocha has such a fantastic command of the English language that it made perfect sense to me that she assisted in an English progam. Hell, she could teach it.

Gotta love those false friends. I fall victim to them all the time, even when I know better.

Carlos, you (and all the men that comment here) are such gentlemen. I just knew you would be particularly sensitive to that horrible scene with Estrella. Judy was spot on with her dicho. I'm going to remember it well.

Sylvia, you're right: I had forgotten that Oscar had attempted murder before. Wasn't it he and Jero who cut the brakes on Mau's car early on in the series? I guess I shouldn't be too surprised at his deeds last night. Only this time he had the blood right on his hands and you could see the distaste, only momentarily, for what happened.

He seemed much more relaxed when it came to letting Sal suffer, suffer, suffer as he egged him on to more distress. It was chilling to watch how cold and uncaring he was, just stepping over his body like it was no big deal.

On the other hand,I was surprised at Coni's caring words to Sal and her attempts to call 911, or whatever the Mexican equivalent is. Nevertheless she is tied up in this, and Oscar, I'm sure will press a full advantage. Her life is spiraling down, down, down. I don't see a happy nor redeemed future for her. Sorry, Carlos, but I think the telenovela gods will have a tragic end for her.

In the meantime, how are we to endure how dark this show has become? I need just 5 minutes of Xime or Lalu tonight to provide a temporary emotional reprieve.

Now, I am off to the real world to teach and hope I can slap on a smile and not worry too much about my imaginary tele friends!

Sylvia, as I read it I didn't even blink at thinking she assisted in the course, but her English is so perfect that I had second thoughts when I saw that she said asisted a course rather than assisted in a course.

I am profoundly disappointed in our Oscar. He was such a bumbling rogue, but thinking back, he had no compunction about poisoning Sal. He did a marvelous job in that transformational scene, but just why did it have to be in our happy little cartoon?

Carlos

Deb!! That makes two attempted murders by Oski and Jero! First Mau and then then Coni's psychologist played by Tio Meño (well not Tio Meño but you know what I mean.)

Hmmm...good point about her redemption. Betito was her saving grace. Now what? It seems we are in the phase of the telenovela where the character's decisions have life or death implications.

Diana, I forgot to say that ITA with your comment regarding Isabel and money. Why else would she be back? Mau was right when he said she had ice in her veins. Thanks for checking in before your long weekend and we'll talk to you next week.

Judy, it was great catching up with Schoolmarm. She wishes everyone well and wishes she had time to check in with us but she is one BUSY LADY.

Carlos, I missed your addition. Oski = 2 attempted murders, 1 poisoning, 1 trying to get a kid addicted to drugs (remember?), 1 murder (if Araujo is dead which he probably is), and now Salvador? What else has that villain done?

Deb, you saw exactly what I saw. Only momentary distaste, much like one's first sip of a martini, or tasting that first oyster. What great acting, but why now? Why us? Our little funfest is losing it's innocence.

Carlos

Yes, what happened to our sweet little telenovela with no body count? I don't really care for this turn of events. I'm with Diana, I have hopes for a long and happy life for Sal and Gabi.

Uh oh, it looks likes my customers are waking up. I may not be able to check back in for a while. Pesky work!!

Sylvia, I guess we've been cutting him slack because of his ineptitude and oily charm. My profa has always thought that the actor is handsome and charming but always seems to play a bad guy.

Carlos

Thanks for the recap Sylvia. I'm glad nothing happened to Estrella but am sorry you had another downer episode.

Most of us feel our funny sweet TN has been hijacked (thanks Judy). For a writer I guess its creative to have these type of plot lines but must it be so dark.

ITA with you Deb about Coni and her downward spiral. But even Coni pales in comparison to Isabel. While Isabel's trauma was awful, I guess I'm used to seeing devastated women inflict more pain on themselves and not others. It makes her character one of the scariest I've encountered b/c if given an opportunity to do real harm, she would have no qualms.

Karen, I think one of the problems is that we have been spoiled by quality and good-natured well-executed good humor of this show. Many have remarked on its similarity between this and cartoons that we grew up with. this is seemingly confirmed by the way the picture becomes a cartoon between the commercials. Like with Haydn's Surprise Symphony we have been lulled for quite sometime now only to be abruptly and harshly jarred by ugly reality. Just as we were breathing a collective sigh of relief as Moni satisfactorily dispatched the rotten boys who intruded on our bliss, one of our own (Oscar, granted naughty, but nonetheless lovable) commits a heinous act. I'm feeling a little betrayed.

Carlos

Thanks, Sylvia, for a steady, solid and caring recap of a troubling episode.

I've long felt that Oscar was the worst of the bunch of villians. Sylvia listed some of the things he's done, and there are probably more. Connie, while very cruel, has shown several times that she doesn't really want anyone to be killed. Oscar and Jero once proposed killing Monita, and Coni recoiled at the thought, it was just too much. She doesn't want Sal to die, either, but of course Oscar wouldn't let her call 911.

Usually (but certainly not always), the lighter telenovelas have 2-3 days of terrible things, and then some relief. So I'm hoping things will get better tonight. If not, they'll probably get even worse, and then Monday will be happier. In Querida Enemiga, several times things were so bad we almost wanted to jump ship. Then the next day, a breath of fresh air. Let's hope.

I would also place Isabel as worse than Coni.

As for Estrella, I think the majority of blame should go to those two punks. She told them she was not a prostitute, and that should be enough. I thought they taught all young people nowadays that no means No!

Oh for the days when Moni dressed up as a geisha.

Great recap of a hard-to-watch episode. I had to turn away when the lawyer was getting bashed and again when Sal was in agony and then attacked. Yikes! Where are Ximena, Rolu, Lalo and Arny? There is so much grimness.

This is only my second telenovela (MEPS was my first) and I have a very hard time with the rape and other violent scenes. When I see these scenes I keep flashing back to Camilo with Aurora and all things Barbara.
I hope it gets better soon.

AmyK

Hi AmyK and Hombre...let's all keep our fingers crossed that something good happens tonight, but I'm not feeling very optimistic.

Carlos...wow, an analysis of our discomfiture complete with classical music. Who knew?

Thanks, Sylvia for such a great recap. Don't know how you did it...

I've never liked Oscar - too oily. When he was in high school he probably was just like the two who attacked Estrella. He looks like the type who takes what he wants. Don't forget, he bugged Mau's office, for all the good it did him. Wonder what Jero will do when he finds out about Oski's baaaaaaaaad behavior?

Ximena, come back!!

Sylvia, congrats on a job extremely well done. Seemed to me there were words being used that I hadn't seen before plus the lousy dark turn of events. This was one of those episodes where we're reminded that Telenovelas have license to radically change the characters personalities on a dime.

Wasn't it just a few days ago we had a good laugh at Oscar and Jero waking up in a bed w/ Lalu in the middle? And now Oscar is a proven scumbag.

Hombre, I agree with you that the primary culpability lies w/ those two young jerks. Aldo and Katia both share some of the blame - but, yeah, it was the two punks who perpetrated.

Carlos, was Salvador's depiction of a heart attack realistic in terms of being able to yell and take a swing at Oscar?

Jarocha, can you tell me about the title "Licenciado?" My understanding is that abogado is the word for lawyer, but I remember licenciado being used in other shows for people who were not lawyers.

Isabel has eyes like a shark. No light, no life. I sincerely hope that is a matter of technique on the part of the actress, but it's effective for the role of Isabel.

I am pleased to report that I did in fact have a dozen oysters for lunch. Not bad, but the Gulf Coast still has the tastiest.

Lastly, can we have a group hug para mi esposa accompanied w/ wishes for a Feliz Cumpleanos? Ella tiene "29" anos hoy!

Emilia! ¡Feliz cumpleaños! and a long round of Las Mañanitas, which I would sing except that I don't know all the words.

Hombre, it breaks my heart to dispute you and indict mi Constancia with the same stroke, but may I gently point out that Coni actually slept with Jero as fulfilling her part of an ignoble agreement with Jerónimo that if he (with O's help) would polish off Moni while she was still comatose, she would yield to his desire. She kept her part of the bargain and became physically ill when Beto reported that not only was Moni alive but up and about. Coni suddenly realized that she had been raped.

Emilia, feliz cumpleaños.

Carlos

Emilia: Feliz Cumpleanos!

Diana

Wow, Emilia...what's a hip 29-year-old chick like you doin' married to a wild man like Mike? I know...having a helluva good time. Enjoy.

Feliz Cumpleaños, Bonne Anniversaire und herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!

I love these "group hug" things. Makes me feel like Mary Tyler Moore. Once upon a time, I DID have long brown hair and worked for a newspaper...but it wasn't quite the same.

Carlos, I guess you're right. I still see a spark of humanity (very small, though) in Coni, whereas Oscar has none.

Feliz cumpleaños, Emilia!

Hombre, I've not given up hope on our Coni. She made a few mistakes and has been a bit peckish lately but she still hasn't (successfully) killed anyone... yet.

Carlos

WOW! Thanks all... Kinda hard to claim to be 29 when we have a 34 year old daughter. (sigh!) Having a great birthday so far - I got lazy and took a nap! Doesn't get much better. Mike gets his favorite meal - pot roast tonight. That's for putting up with me for lo these many years.

Thanks for the serenade, Carlos. We used to listen to my mom's spanish records and I always cried when that song played. Dunno why.....

You folks have been busy this morning!! Wonderful recap, hysterical title, plagerized or otherwise I like it and agree!!

Ha funny how we always come back to animal connections on this blog. we are definitely critter folks over here!!

Thank heavens Estre was saved the worst.

Poor Sal...he never gets a break, eh?

AH and Happiest Birthday to you Madame Emilia!!!!

Thank you for the fantastic recap! Sylvia. This was a very dark episode and I felt for all of you when I saw what happened to the lawyer.

Emilia! Happy Birthday!

Carlos: Thanks for pointing out the assist error. I'm now gonna try to not make it again. I'm sure that wasn't the first because I have a tendency to write in a haste and after I post my comments I end up cringing when I read them and find some glaring mistakes in my spelling.

Mike: "Licenciado" is the title we receive when we graduate University. It's the same thing as a bachelor's degree. Usually those that study engineering are called "Ingenieros" even though their title is actually: "Licenciado en Ingeniería". Lawyers are called either "Abodado" or "Licenciado", graduates from some of the other careers are called by the name of their careers like "Arquitecto" (In reality "Licenciado en en Arquitectura") or "Contador" ("Licenciado en Contaduría"). It's just that for some reason people have been used to calling them that way and that's how they call them. But still, all University graduates earn the title of "Licenciado".

About the show. I also think Isabel is worse than Coni. There's something in her that's very dark. Poor Moni.

I also thought the conversation between Mau and Beto went on for too long. I've noticed that Mau likes to have very long conversations with everyone (Moni, Coni, Beto).

Jarocha

Emilia...of couse you can have an "older" daughter. You're the Trophy Wife!

Jarocha, I agree that Isabel is worse than Coni. Coni at least seems human. Her evil is motivated by misplaced passion, and a few people bring out a little warmth in her. Isabel just seems soulless, and she's nasty to everyone.

For me, the only really enjoyable Mauricio conversations are when he's talking to Rolu (those are short and usually end in some sort of comic abuse) and Ximena (because anything with Ximena just sparkles).

I thought it was funny when Mauricio looked amused listening to Gabi ramble on and on, then as soon as Salvador brought up business stuff Mau sort of slumped over on his hand and looked totally bored. Then he remembered to act involved.

I guess I also like it when Mau is talking with Estrella, because he looks so dizzy. He can't keep up with her wild effusiveness.

Heh, you are right about the scene with Gaby and Sal Julie. Mau is like a kid that plays to be an adult sometimes. I think that if he felt like he could choose to leave the company and dedicate himself to be a luchador and a car racer full time he would.

It has been a while since Rolu and Mau had any interaction.

~~~***Happy Birthday, Emilia and wishes for many more***~~~
Feliz Cumpleaños Emilia!!! I hope you had a simply marvelous day.
Carlos, thank you for the link to that very sweet version. Emilia, since everybody else was crying while singing that song I think you somehow picked up on the correct vibe as a kid.
Mike, sorry, I wasn't ignoring your question but have been thinking about it. I suppose he could have thrown a punch. I finished my shower (though I didn't shave) even though I thought I might be dying. I guess even facing death we hew to our priorities. I still smile thinking about Judy's esposo "processing some very negative energy," not exactly a traditional observation, but eerily accurate.
Oh, Kelli's parents are both from Olive Hill, not Olive Grove. I've seen photos of Kelli's abuela's home and it is idyllic. Kelli was born in Asheland and grew up in Henderson. My best friend is from Asheland as well. His wife is a gorgeous hillbillie (self-described) from a place with a name like Possumfart or some such. We trade recipes for squirrel which we sometimes had as a treat but her family had on a regular basis as well as other even more unlikely mammals and birds.
Jarocha, I hope you don't mind my commenting on your statement earlier. I thought that it was cute and endearing. So did you assist or attend the course? Spelling errors are almost a prerequisite here. I also look back on things I just posted and cringe, not so much at the spelling flaws, but more so at the incoherency resulting from haste. I clearly recall telling my profa once that, "Yo atendí el concierto de Vicente Fernandez." Ella me dijo, " No, Carlos tú asististe el consietro, tú atendiste la tarea." Yo balbucí, "Pues... no exactamente." I just hope I didn't embarrass (more treacherous similar verbs) you. You are a treasure to us.
Carlos
Don't worry Carlos. I apreciate your corrections because it helps me to see the mistakes I'm making and prevent me from making them again. Hopefully.
Jarocha
Emilia:
Feliz cumpleaños! My birthday is tomorrow!
Capricorns rule.
Have a decadent birthday, Emilia.
EJ
Jarocha, I'm sorry, it's not my place to point out anyone's mistakes. I was just observing how cute, how human, how charming, how much like my own experiences with Spanish on an ongoing basis it is. Thanks so much for joining us.
More grim for us tonight. I hope Hombre saw some hopeful signs. I'm up Monday. Whoa!
Carlos
Elna June, thanks for jumping in. You and Deb have added a great deal of substance and texture to our musings here. Muy feliz cumpleaños, amiga mia.
He is mi cuate y mi idolo. We're the same age and both adore horses. Try not to think about black caterpillars as you focus on his eyebrows and mustache.
Happy birthday, Chula.
Carlos
