Corazon Salvaje - Monday, Feb. 22: Thunder and Lightning

Episode #1:

* A violent tumultuous thunderstorm begins this romantic adventure. First we have the brief and rapid summary of the story starting with Juan and Maria’s courtship, then jumping to Rodrigo with twins Aimee and Regina. Then it jumps to Juan Jr. and his meeting the twins on his ship La Promesa. Gabe meets Jimena on the dance floor. Renato on horseback through pastureland. Woman threatens Leonarda with secret about Juan Jr.; Juan Jr. states his regrets and the promise.

* Julio Aleman (Narrator) starts to describe the time period (1850) and location (Veracruz) for our story of love and jealousy.

* In the midst of a major thunderstorm, we see a soaking wet Juan de Dios thinking of his soulmate Maria del Rosario.

* Back in the home mansion, Leonarda is fearful of the thunderstorm, thinks it is a premonition of what the future holds. Noel calms her down.

* Maria del Rosario meets with Rodrigo. He gives her a very expensive necklace. She’s surprised and humbled by the gift. In the hallway, Clemencia drops a tray on the floor and the other maid talks with her about something being a premonition of trouble to come.

* Leonarda, Rodrigo, Noel and Maria del Rosario have dinner together in the family dining hall. Noel and Rodrigo discuss the financial and legal arrangements to unite them permanently as family.

* Man (Benny?) in group of fisherpeople (pescadores) discuss Juan and Maria’s plan to marry.

* Juan, dressed as Zorro, sneaks into Maria’s room at the mansion. He tells her that after tonight, they will forever be together. They are enchanted by the thought of being together in marriage.

* Noel and Rodrigo discuss Rod’s plan to propose to Maria.

* Juan and Maria make love in her bedroom.

* Rod and Noel discuss Rod’s plan to marry Maria and what he may plan to do about the fishermen (pescadores) accepting it.

* Leonarda is jealous over Rod’s obsessive interest in her sister Maria. She throws a ring on the floor. She has a guilty conscience and picks it up - apparently it was a gift from Rod. She vows to split him and Maria up permanently (so she can have him for herself).

* Noel and Rod discuss a man named Santiago.

* Santiago is talking with his girlfriend, Mabel on the fisherman camp on the beach. He has to leave to meet with his new business associates. She’s not happy as she watches him walk away.

* Juan and men are in town market. Soldiers stop by and try to get them to leave. Juan tells them they are not doing anything wrong and will stay. The soldiers provoke a fight - Juan swipes one of the rifles and points it at the soldiers. The soldiers leave - one vows vengeance for this set-back.

* Clemencia and Maria are in Maria’s bedroom. Maria tells her about her plan to marry Juan and asks Clemencia to go to her sister, Leonarda, to get her to back the plan. Clemencia has misgivings.

* Fulgencio meets with Leonarda at the mansion. Leonarda tells him that he is the administrator of the hacienda at the sea and orders him to return there until further notice. He obediently leaves.

* Clemencia tries to talk Maria out of the idea of getting Leonarda to understand. Maria is focused on her happiness and plan to marry Juan. Leonarda enters and asks about the flower arrangement. Maria asks Clemencia to leave. Alone, Maria tells Leonarda of her plan to marry Juan de Dios.

* Rod sits in his office, admiring his engagement ring. Leonarda walks in and tells Rod the horrific, shocking news. Maria has disgraced the family - she wants to marry a lowly fisherman! Leonarda plays up her horror and shock and cries to Rod. Rod is mortified and impactado. He can’t believe it. She says Maria confirmed it herself. She doesn’t love Rod at all, she loves a lowly fisherman. Rod leaves the office, impactado. Leonardo grins over her “Oscar-winning performance” with Rod.

* Maria and Juan at the altar of the town church. We are at the exchange of vows. Maria says “I accept”. As Juan is about to speak, the soldiers storm in and stop the wedding ceremony.

* Rod stands in his office and vows vengeance against Maria and especially Juan.

* Soldiers have orders to arrest Juan for stealing expensive jewels. Juan denies the charges. Maria cries and whines against the soldiers. Juan fights with the soldiers (the same ones he fought with on the street earlier). Maria cries in horror.

* In the mansion, Rod and Leonarda fight about Rod’s plan to stop the wedding and separate Juan and Maria.

* Soldiers are beating up Juan right there at the altar of the church.

* Rod grunts to Leonarda how much he disgust and hatred against Juan.

* Soldiers drag an unconscious Juan from the church. Maria and Padre follow them down the aisle. Mabel and (Benny?) follow them. Mariel blames Maria for bringing this violent bad luck to Juan’s life.

* Maria sits with Padre in the church rectory/office. Rod enters. Maria starts to beg Rod to help Juan. Rod is angry and hurt because Maria went behind his and the family’s back to marry with Juan. She begs him to help her and Juan. He is disgusted and asks why? She finally blurts out that she is pregnant with Juan’s baby! Rod is muy impactado.

* Soldier/guard splashes Juan with a bucket of cold water in the prison cell. He demands that Juan tell them where he stashed the jewels. Juan tells them he never stole any jewels, as they well know.

* Rod is angry and calls Maria a flirt and harlot and played on his emotions. She begs him for forgiveness and understanding. He only has disgust for her and her way of throwing away all the kindness and gifts he had showered on her. She loves him only as a brother. She loves Juan in her heart and soul. Rod says that Juan will never be with her, he will remain in prison for his lifetime. Maria breaks down and yells that she hates him! Rod tells her ‘touche’ (now she knows how he feels about her and Juan).

* Guards talk about Juan’s denial of the charges and Rod’s orders.

* Leonarda and Maria in Maria’s bedroom. Maria is distraught and is sure she is the only woman in Juan’s life. Leonarda tries to convince her sister that maybe Juan and Mariel were a couple also.

* Mabel and Juan’s friend (Benny?) go to the prison to try and convince the warden to let them see Juan/ he is innocent. The warden and guards don’t want to hear it and send them away.

* Leonarda acts to console Maria - talk about Rod.

* Noel and Rod discuss Juan’s arrest and how long Rod plans to keep Juan in jail on trumped up charges. Arcadio sides with Rod and says Juan will remain in prison forever.

* Mabel and fishermen at night at beach campfire, discussing how to help Juan, get him out of prison. Soldiers approach and fight with the group.

* Juan prays to self about his love, Maria, in his prison cell.

* Clemencia promises Maria that she will always be there for her. Maria thanks her for her support and tells Clemencia to leave all the jewelry from Rodrigo there on the dressing table, she doesn’t want any of them.

* Fishermen and Mabel continue to fight with soldiers at beach campfire.

* Clemencia thought bubbles as she helps Maria. Leonarda enters and tells Maria the coach is there to take them to the ranch by the sea.

* The coach pulls up at the ranch by the sea. Fulgencio stands in silence as Clemencia, Maria and Leonarda walk passed him and into the house.

* Juan is still lamenting Maria in his prison cell.

* Clemencia and Maria discuss Maria’s desperate plea to leave the ranch and visit Juan. Clemencia has misgivings, but Maria is so focused and desperate, Clemencia gives her a pendant for luck and says she will support her always. Maria is excited and they leave.

* Leonarda is meeting with Rod at the city mansion. They discuss Rod’s plan for Maria’s baby. Rod tells Leonarda that when the baby is born he wants her to make the baby disappear for good and forever.

* Celestino stops Maria and Clemencia as they walk out to the patio of the ranch. They beg him to keep quiet and let them leave. He thinks and lets them go. He thought bubbles to self as they leave.

* Maria and Clemencia stop on the path when they see Mabel. Mabel is still angry about what happened with Juan and blames Maria. Maria explains that she wasn’t to blame and is just as hurt as Mabel over what happened. Mabel offers to accompany/help them.

* Soldiers lay Juan on the bed of hay in his prison cell.

* Arcadio meets with Maria, Clemencia and Mabel. He refuses to let them visit Juan. They offer him a bribe (a pearl necklace). He accepts it and says only one of them can visit. Clemencia watches as Mabel tells Maria to go visit Juan.

* In the cell, Juan wakes and sees Maria - Maria tells him she is really there with him.

* A gala in the ballroom. Noel stands on the stairs as the orchestra plays. Leonarda and Rod greet and mingle with the guests. They talk discreetly with a Doctor about Maria.

* Maria and Juan talk in the cell. Juan can’t believe this is happening, wonders why? She says that because they fell in love - Rodrigo is angry and jealous of them - he did this to separate them. She can’t live without him, she loves him. Juan loves her just as much. They kiss.

* Leonarda continues to talk with the doctor about Maria. She explains that they need the utmost in discretion and privacy in regards to Maria’s pregnancy and the birth of her baby. Leonarda thought bubbles to self over her plan as Rod watches her.

* Maria cries to Juan. He consoles and assures her of their future together. She tells him that she’s pregnant with his child. He is surprised and happy by the news.

ADVANCE: Maria’s pregnancy continues Rod’s violent jealousy and rage against Juan.

alright, crew members, the first episode really flew by fast. i hope i at least got the names of the characters correct. if there are any errors, please let me know.

happy sailing!
Jody :)

goodness they really did pack a lot in didn't they! I was out sawing away on my fiddle and missed it but have fun you guys!

Capitana Jody, A WOW performance for the opening night. Thanks for all the work, that was a staggering amount of detail flung at us. I like how it started with a telenovela mainstay, a wedding, albeit an incomplete and tragically ending one. Let the games begin.

Is it just me or Mariel has a really bad tan or fake tan? Interesting soldiers unifrm. I don't recall seeing it worn during that time period. I think I missed something. Who are Maria and Leonarda's parents? I thought Leonarda looked a little bit older than Maria. I even thought she might be her mother.

Ibarramedia

Just saw you here. Good to have you back Cheryl. :)

Ibarramedia

Awesome job mi capitana! I loved this first episode and am very thankful for the great job you did. It really helped me understand what was going on. Honestly, without you I would be lost. I like Clemencia, now there's a woman who thinks ahead.

Capitana JR you rock, huge kudos for the first recap of CS!!

Hey thanks for the welcome, Ibarramedia! It's great to be back. This show should be silly and fun with lots of jealousy, greed, vengeance and twins! All premium qualities for a promising telenovela.

Clemencia is played by the actress who was Eduardo's mother Soledad on MEPS, am I right?

xlntperuvian
That's Maria Rojo. I guess she always plays the servant now. She used to be the hot number. "Esmeralda de noche", "Danzón"

Ibarramedia- Mariel is a white Mexican actress with straight hair (I have seen her in another novela)that they have put in black face and made her hair super curly so that she looks like what used to be called a mulata (a mixed race black person). I was taken aback by it, had to get up close to my tv sometimes, and then had to look the actress up to see what she really looks like. I am going to let it go, just like I let go that little scene I saw last week with Rocky on Guapos putting on black face to look like Morgan Freeman. Having lived in Latin America for a time as a black woman, I know there are just some things that don't quite compute as far as racial sensitivity go. I have seen so much worse! The stories I could tell...

Anyway, I'm letting it go. The actress is beautiful both in and out of black face. :)

Thanks for the recap, Jody. :-) It was a good first episode; enjoyed it.

Thank you for the recap, Jody!

Thanks for the recap Jody. The first week or so is always so confusing. This is probably a dumb question but who is Rodrigo? is he related to the two sisters? I thought he was their dad at first but now I'm not so sure. Has anyone see the guy that plays Juan de Dios before? I don't recognize him.

Osvaldo Rios is Juan de Dios; I like him, but I've only seen him in scandalous news articles before. I like his looks. He's the perfect guy to play the father of an Eduardo character.

I posted something on Cristina last night. Not sure where it went though.

Connie:
Rodrigo is a cousin, or another distant relative of the sisters, and I guess they're also his wards.

Connie- Your Cistina post is still there. It keeps moving around though. Not sure why. Here is the link: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=25394992&postID=3192560230632793581

Ok, somebody just told me that Osvaldo Rios was stunning in Zorro; did not see that, but might make an effort to now.

Jeri: Two (?) years ago Telemundo produced a remake of La Mentira with Osvaldo and Natalia Streignard. I heard the novela failed, but it would be interesting to check him in Guy Ecker's role. :-)

Gracias, Jody...quite a lot going on last night, and I'll probably be relying on your recap for names tonight :) Too much info too fast...or too slow, depending on how I think about it. I wonder if all this exposition will actually be all that important later or if they could have cut out most of it.

The difference in age between the actors and their characters is making it difficult for me to figure out things like, how much older is Leonarda supposed to be than Maria? A few years? A decade? At least this puts to rest some of the complaints about EY playing Juan. Now we know that premature aging is just something that runs in the family. :)

I forgot the title of the remake: El juramento.

Thanks, Capitana Jody! BTW, should I salute when addressing you, now that you're an officer?

I missed the first half but even if I saw the whole enchilada, I still need help. Thank goodness for the recappers!

Si, Mariel looked like she was dipped in a knock-off brand of bronzing gel. Vivi, thanks for the insight.

Weclome back, Cheryl!

Maggarita
:-D

Thanks, Capitana. You have helped us set sail quickly. Osvaldo plays Zorro's papa in Zorro which is now playing in the afternoons on Telemundo. He looks very hot as Zorro's papa. I don't think that he is quite as attractive with the long locks. In Zorro, he has shorter gray hair and a beard and mustache. It's nice to see so many familiar faces : Pad Tad from FELS, the actress who played Fr'ed mama in MEPS, Helena Rojas who was Matilde's greedy , conniving mama in Amor Real. It looks like Leonarda is going to be super bad .~~~Mad Bess

Thanks Aribeth. I was afraid he was really their brother. Gack! Thanks for the link Vivi. I'm never sure where the darn things go after I post them. I really like the costumes in this show. I wonder how long it takes them to get dressed? Can you imagine wearing all those petticoats and skirts! There would definitely be no room for my tool belt. 8(:-)

5ft Latina:
"Premature aging runs in the family" - thanks, you gave me a good laugh. :-)

Thank you for your recap to what I thought was a confusing first episode, you've put it all together for me. thank you. It was good to see Osvaldo Rios, his last novela El Juramento was cut show on another network without warning and without ending, it was horribly cruel to women. I'm glad he's back if even for a few episodes.

Did you recognize the servant that Clemencia was talking to ? He played the evil worker on Manuel's hacienda in Amor Real.

What a start...''It's like thunder..lightening..the way you love me is frightening...you better knock on wood.'' In PA. Dutch ''dunnerweter'' which means thunder weather is a curse word. Yikes...Fulgencio is muy creepy. I wouldn't be happy about going to a remote finca with him . Blecchhh. Who is Mariel ? How is she connected to Juan?--friend, relative, or exlover ? Wow..a little overacting going on there. Someone has to tell this chick to dial it back a little. Who is Santiago ? The guy on the beach with Mariel is Benny , Gaviotta's Italian buddy from Destilando Amor. Leonarda just shot herself in the foot. If she wanted Old Rod for herself [and one has to ask oneself...why ???...money, I suppose] she should have kept her mouth shut and let MR run away with poor Juan...but then , we wouldn't have our telenovela. Clemencia was using her head when she took the pearls. She knew that they would come in handy for MR.

Great recap Jody. Looked like a lot of melodrama and bad wigs to me. The Rodrigo character is supposed to be the guardian of Leonarda and Maria. So, he gets to slap them around, plan their lives, and generally abuse them.

The actor who plays Juan de Dios looks like he's been surgically altered. It's scary.

When we all watched Pasion, Colunga played the part of the pirate captain with a toung-in-cheek spin. From the previews, it looks like Eduardo Y is going to follow this formula.

After, who in the world could take this stuff seriously.

I meant to end with "After all,..."

Aribeth, thanks for the tip about Osvolado Juramento. And susanlynn, thanks for the tip about Osvaldo in Zorro on Telemundo now.

So it begins! They really threw a lot of characters at us fast last night. Great job keeping up with all of 'em in the recap.

The "premature aging runs in the family" quip is spot on. I think they're intentionally trying to avoid telling us the age differences between the characters (ie Maria and Leonarda) to keep us from noticing it.

Jody, thanks very much for the immensely helpful recap. I watched the first episode last night and was muy confundida. Reading your recap and some of the comments really helped, though I'd hate to have to explain this TN to anyone at this point!

If I continue to watch Corazón Salvaje, I suspect it will be mainly because the recaps are such fun.

Wow. Recapping the first night of a telenovela has to be the hardest job in the world. Thanks for doing this Jody. Didn't see it, but possibly it got recorded. Think I'll still be confused but eventually the plot and characters will sort themselves out. Sounds like it's going to be quite a dramatic romp.

Vivi, tell us more ,when you can, about your time in Latin America. How long were you there? Your Spanish is absolutely terrific so I assume it was for a year at least.

Forgot to say thank you for the recap. That was a lot to cover, and a heck of a lot of characters! The link to the character list says Mabel and not Mariel. But I don't have CCs, so I don't know what the characters called her.

Since these characters only appear for a few beginning episodes, I don't understand why they can't have younger actors play the characters, and then replace them with the more well known older actors when it's 20 anos despues. We'll figure out that they're the same people. It is really hard to accept Maria, Leonarda, etc. as fresh, innocent teens/20-somethings? My beanie kept slipping last night. Lol! It does look like this will be a fun, snark-worthy ride. I don't think I will let my self get hooked and watch everyday, but I will check the comments regularly because I know you guys will provide some entertaining comments. :)

Thanks, Jody, for the clarifying recap. I got so lost on character names, I was hoping some of that would be cleared up in this morning's recap and it was. I'm still lost on who's who and what are the familial and love connections, but that should all become clear with time.

Looks like a rollicking romp is on its way in this TN--just hope it stays on track. Good to see so many Caray Mates are back.

Thanks for a great first episode recap and lots of super comments. Iberra I also thought that Marials color looked odd. Thanks Vivi, for clearing that up.
SusanLynn does your school system teach separating differebt thoughts into paragraphs? You always have something interesting to say but it's confusing when it's all ran together into one continuous paragraph. It's like the subject changes without warning. I'm not sure it would be as obvious if you weren't a school teacher.

Judy- I lived in Ecuador for almost a year 14 years ago during my junior year of college. I lived with a fantastic, fun, crazy Colombian family while there, which was a good thing because I faced lots of prejudice from the middle/upper class host families of the other foreign students. Quito was really the worst place- I wasn't let into some clubs, I was shunned by upper class Ecuadorian students at the university, I was given the cold shoulder by some of the host families, and one of the host moms asked my American friend not to invite me back to their house. She very soon after moved out and rented an apartment with two other foreigners who were appalled by the intolerance of their host families. Throughout the rest of the country, which was primarily indigenous, and mixed-black along the coast, was totally different. People were really friendly and welcoming in the other regions of the country, so I took the opportunity to travel throughout the rest of the country and to Colombia and Peru during weekends and holidays and got the heck out of Quito. Ecuador and the whole Andean region is gorgeous!

Gracias, Jody! Great job.

Wow, there was a lot going on, I see. I actually fell asleep in the first fifteen minutes though. Sadly, I missed the Christina Show too. :(

The actress playing Leonora played Cecilia in CCEA I think. I am also thrown off by the age thing.

Should get interesting though. First few episodes are always confusing for me.

Thank you Capitana Jody.
Did anyone else experience strange sound quality like the sound was coming from inside a box?

BTW, my moniker Bonney is what was left from my pirate name Captn. Bonney Mc something. When the naked baker tn started I enthusiatically dropped captain and added the sweet bread churros to the name. Loved the bread but couldn't stick to that tn. I always got a howl out of Mad Bess's name with adjectives.

My goodness didn't she conceive fast!? I said out loud that was quick!

Great recap, Capitana Jody! I especially like how you got all the names of the characters, which is very helpful.

I agree with those who said that Leonarda is actually young, not much older than Maria, but since the actress is in the later part of the novela (20 years later) at her actual age, they just decided to costume her and make her up to be a young girl (and we, the audience didn't quite buy it).

I love the over the top nature of this novela, the sound effects explosions, and the crazed expressions.

The frist 5 minute or so is like a preview of what will happen in the series. A quick short clip.

Vivi, I did not even think Mariel was supposed to be black. She can still be a dark haired Mexican girl. I wasn't even offended. More like confused. I'm chalking that up to bad make up and special effects. If they wanted Mariel to be a tad tanner, she probably would have to use some pro-tan or Jan Tana tan. Lol. :)

If they really wanted to make her black, they can do it with the right special effects. Eddie Murphy has doen the opposite when playing various characters. A good example is the film Coming to America. One of his 7 or 8 characters was an old white Jewish man. You would not even know it was a black guy until the end credits.

I have also seen on some tv shows, I gorget where, but A white guys went under cover as a black guy and you really could not tell the difference.

I was very confused about who Rodrigo is. As I was watching, it seems he is a legal guardian of sorts who is also a suitor to Maria. How messed up is that? Even more so if they are somewhat related. Another case of cousins hooking up, or uncles hooking up with a niece? Hmmmm.

But even if Maria is supposed to be in her 20's, Rodrigo(the Character) looks to be in his late 50's early 60's. Maybe old enough to be her grand father, certainly old enough to be her father.

I guess their parents died when they were younger. We will find out soon hopefully, since no one here knows.

I think Mariel and her significant other are close friends of Juan de Dios. That's why they are witnesses. Mariel is just a little emotional considering what happened. She is pretty nut not too educated so I think she is displacing the blame to Maria, who clearly has no fault. It would not be logical. Maria is clearly getting married to Juan and she protested vehemently to the arrest.

Unless of course, Mariel had a romantic interest in Juan and was jealous, so she lashed out to Maria at the very chance she had. there is more to this and I', sure there will be some flashback to the back story of this.

Ibarramedia

Ibarramedia- They clearly intend for her to be a mulata, and not indigenous. Trust me on this. I don't think they care too much about proper special effects in this tn. ;-) Plus, she's not too off from what a mixed race black woman would really look like, so it's not horrible.

Ahoy, me Hearties! I thought I'd come along for another pirate adventure. I was a bit confused with all the info packed in the beginning but what a way to start with the thwarted wedding.

Vivi, I was wondering if I was seeing things and Mariel really was in black face. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Thanks for a great recap, Jody. There was a lot happening and you captured it all.

I'm not to keen on Eduardo Yanez (who I think had a bad botox job, I didn't even recognize him!!) but I will stick with it.

I hope we won't have to endure a lot of sobbing by Maria. She's an annoying cryer.

Ann-NYC

Ah-hoy there Pirate Babe.

And speaking of the wedding, in this instance there is no question as to if they are married or not. They are not. Right? And yet the jailer is allowing her to spend the night in that cell? Or is it that we viewers, like the two lovers are forgetting the passage of time?

Ok Vivi. I will trust your explanation on this one. I did not look up the character yet and was going by the first episode. Saw this on Youtube the day after it's premiere in Mexico around the same time we started Sortilegio. I thought seeing it on HD would give me a better perspective.

I've seen quite a few mulattoes. Even briefly dated one. ;) I'm much more familiar with Mestizas and criollas.

Ibarramedia

It just drive me nuts how we can't correct our typos when we post. the preview window does not do much cause it is small.

Ibarramedia

Bonney, did she really spend the night there? I thought she was just visiting? I think she got pregnant after Juan came in from the rooftop all dressed in black A la Zorro. They procedded to kiss and get it on...

Ibarramedia

Ibarra, I agree. I thought she was jealous too.

Thanks for explaining the "black face". I thought she just had a lot of soot on her face or my TV was whacked out or something. I hope I can get all the characters straight by Thursday.

Ann-NYC:

"I'm not to keen on Eduardo Yanez (who I think had a bad botox job, I didn't even recognize him!!)"

Wait, are we talking about the same man? Yanez didn't appear in the first episode - it's his "daddy", played by Osvaldo Ríos, who indeed has an ehm, interesting face. :-)

Great start Capitana! I read this last noght when it was posted but my internet connection went away. You did a great job keeping up with all the characteres and the action.

They truly go fast during the backstory but I think even fans of the '93 version could enjoy this part since it will be new to them.

Vivi I'm sorry for the bad experiences in Quito. I don't really think there was a bad intention behind using a white actress to play Mabel. Salvador Mejía had to go through casting too quickly because he had several problems at the beginning and there are no black actresses currently working on Televisa right now and even the black actors they do have are inmigrants.

Unlike the Caribean and some countries in South America, México doesn't have a big population of African ascendence. The only parts where there was a mulato population were the central parts of Veracruz and Guerrero but by now the porcentage has diminished to less than 0.2% of the total population.

Now a days most black people you'll see in Veracruz are tourists but there are some people considered Afro-Mexicans that live here in the state. Being honest, at this point given the level of mixing that has happened between all types of races here I see no difference like someone from another state would. Given the fact that the Port of Veracruz has always been the most important place for international trade, you can find people who's past relatives came from Africa and Asia but they don't know it anymore.

I think what Mejía tried to do here (and failed at) was to add a character that represented the diverse population that existed and was very particular of Veracruz in that era.

Jarocha

Well actually now that I think about it I don't know what gave me the impression she spent the night in jail with him. Could have been the long slow conversation and the lying down in the cell.

Vivi...so sorry to hear about the attitudes in Quito but glad to hear it was not like that in the rest of the country. I was in Rio de Janeiro visiting friends in the 60's and they said that prejudice didn't exist there like it did in the States. But that was Rio. And those were my friends. I guess there are narrow-minded people everywhere but I'm sorry you had to cross paths with that down in Ecuador. On the plus side, your Spanish is fabulous, your host family was great and you were motivated to travel outside of that narrow-minded society and town. Of course you found a way to deal with it that broadened your horizons and didn't dampen your spirit. You strike me as someone of great intelligence, wisdom (even better) and resilience. But how sad to know that university students are so prejudiced. Ugh.

Cielo de Levy, you're right about Leonarda. Helena Rojo was Cecilia in CCEA too. Looks like Leonarda is going to be a very different character from sweet Cecilia.

I agree about Mabel being a representation of the time period and I think, if she's a regular character, we'll get used to it. It was just very striking at first.

I meant the Port of Veracruz is the most important place for international trade IN México. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for not adding that since it sounds awfully arrogant and not to mention false without clarifying that part.

Jarocha

Vivi, In my haste to get my thought together as i'm multitasking, I forgot to say that i'm sorry you had to go through the prejudice that you went through in Quito,Ecuador. I may be wrong, but I think Colombia is more tolerant of Mulattoes and Black people. I know the Dominican Republic and Cuba have a lot of pure Black people, not just mulattoes.

The only Black Mexican actor I've seen in my short experience with Tn's is that dude who was one of a pair of thugs who followed Aurora in MEPs. They lso blew up the cantina. I think I saw him also in the first week of Dinero. His character name at MEPS escapes me at the moment.

Jarocha, did the soldiers really wear those white uniforms with a bicorn hat in 1850? I Wonder if the different states of Mexico back then had different military uniforms? 1850 is the same era as Amor Real and the rebels had a similar outfit to the Texians, jsut wearing those bell bottoms. The Military uniform in Amor Real resembled the American and confederate uniforms 12 years before the US civil war.

Ibarramedia

No need to be too apologetic about Verra Cruz. It was the most important port in Mexico because it was a gateway to Europe and Espana. The Manila galleons carried spices, porcelain, ivory, lacquerware, processed silk cloth gathered from both the Spice Islands, and Asia-Pacific, to be sold in European markets.

The cargoes were transported from Acapulco by land across Mexico to the port of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico, where they were loaded onto the Spanish treasure fleet bound for Spain. It is for this reason that pirates were abundant in that area.

Ibarramedia

Floresdeazul love the moniker. Very cute. ITA, this is a completely different look for the actress. Sweet mother to jealous sister. Let's see how it goes.

Vivi, you're quite an interesting person. So many things you share with us here. Really appreciate it. I mention a lot of things I learn from you all with my friends, and they're all very impressed. Feel like I'm a little gal showing off my Caray buddies and lessons to everyone. Really love to hear about all the different experiences, and believe it or not, they do effect me in my every day life. :)

Ibarramedia

Unfortunately there aren't many black actors and characters in the Mexican telenovelas.
Only one name came across my mind: René Munoz (RIP), who participated in many Mejía and/or Thalía novelas, like Rosalinda, Abrazame Muy Fuerte, Maria la del Barrio, Marimar... I liked him. Btw, he wasn't only an actor, he also wrote scripts (including many Estradas, like Quinceanera and Maria Isabel).

Ibarramedia as far as I remember, the uniforms have mostly been blue. There were some cream colored ones but I can't remember to what era they belong but it was denifitely much later than 1850. The flag for the Mexican Army Forces has white, blue and red so maybe Mejía took some inpiration from it.

Aribeth: René Muñoz was a fantastic actor and writer. He worked closely with Valentín Pimpstein and he was usually in his novelas, that's why he was in so many Thalía novelas. Mejía worked with Pimpstein for years as an asistant and when he started working on his own productions he asked Muñoz to work with him. Muñoz was actually Cuban but he emigrated to México when he was very young that's the reason he had no accent anymore.

The actor who worked in MEPS and Dinero I can't remember his name but he is Cuban too. He always works in novelas with Emilio Larrosa the producer of Dinero.

Jarocha

There is the guy that played Elvis in Destilando and then he was also in Alborada. I don't remember his name though.

Ack! I forgot to set the tape and missed it. Thank you so much for the jam-packed recap! I can't wait to watch tonight...its been a long time and I am so ready for a good high seas romance. Yay!

Ay, Jarocha, thank you for these interesting informations about Munoz! :-)

Aribeth, you mean the actor with Laura Flores was not EY???? Well, I'll be damned!!! I don't think I know that actor, but I wonder if he had botox??? Doesn't he resemble EY, though???

Thanks for telling me.

Ann-NYC

Connie: The guy playing Elvis in Destilando was Edgardo Tejeda. He also appears on Gancho playing "Costeño" and he is from Panama.

Jarocha

Ann:
Yes, he resembles Yanez very much, that's why he was chosen to play his father. :-) I'm sure he had botox or something else, this face can't be natural. (Although he's quite charismatic, imho.)

Jarocha, that makes sense now that the dude who was in MEPS and Dinero was Cuban. The Doorman that Connie was referring to in Alborada is Panamanian, interesting. Panama,Cuba and Dominican Republic do have a lot of Spanish speaking black people.

Thanks for the explanation for the uniforms. If it was set 100 years before that, I would easily think those were Spanish Soldiers because at the time, British wore Red, The Americans(Continental Army) Wore Blue, French wore a powder Blue, and Spanish wore cream, or white in most cases...

Ibarramedia

I thought that Juan De dios looked like Yanez. I was surprised someone here said that he was Don Diego in Zorro, Alejandro's father. It does not look like him.... Not saying it is not him. Just that he looks different.

Ibarramedia

Aribeth I have only fond memories of René Muñoz. I think his influence in novelas was wonderful and he was always so nice and humble.

Osvaldo Ríos was in "La Viuda de Blanco" a fantastic lighthearted novela that my mom adores and I also liked very much. He has definitely had some work done because he looks very different from that time and it's not because of natural aging.

Jarocha

Molly, Molly, Molly, there you are! I've been looking all over for you. We better have some naked swimming and bathing scenes in this one.

I thought that guy looked like EY too. Of course it wasn't him but it could be father/son which is what they were going for. At first I thought he was on steroids becuase of his jaw and chin but he wasn't very muscular so I'm guessing surgery.

I don't think I will be hooked on this one. So I WILL NOT sit in front of the TV with the captions on & pad and pen. So maybe this will be the cutting of the caption umbilical cord.
I actually thought that Juan Sr would be a better Juan del Diablo, but I cked & he & Yáñez are the same age, 50 años.

Variopinta: I remember you watched the '93 version, right? Did you noticed the change on Juan's background?

Jarocha

Jarocha
I have watched so many of these on DVD, that I really get confused. After awhile, Alborada, Pasión, Amor Real, Corazón Salvaje all run together. I really don't remember.
I don't have Vivi in DC's recall.

One thing is Cristian de la Fuentes is going to be a much better otro hombre than Ariel López Padilla.

I do like Cristian de la Fuente, he is quite handsome and from what I've seen of him he is a good actor. His character is very different from Ariel's, while "Andrés" was a better represantation of a man from the wealthy class of his era, Cristian's character is more noble and handsome.

Jody: Thanks for a great first night rundown of everything! So much happened last night. It was enough to get Hubby's interest so it had to be a surprise for us both. LOL! It seemed decent despite Mejia being the producer. My only complaint is the same as always: older actors pretending to be 20-30 yrs. younger. Ugh! Otherwise, should be a good romp.

I can't get use to the people in their 40's and 50's playing characters in their 20's. Juan's mother(Laura Flores) is younger than him in real life by the way! hahahah

Thanks for all the background explanation Jarocha. You are such a treasure to have on this site. It must be kind of cool that this novela was filmed in your city.

No worries. I am not insulted by the use of the white actress to portray Mabel. Interestingly enough, each year the Mexican Cultural Center here in DC hosts some sort of Afro-Mexican cultural celebration. And yes, it's focused on that coastal area of Mexico. Very fascinating. Despite the brush off from white/upper class Quitenos, I had a blast when I lived in Ecuador. In fact, I will likely be headed back at the end of this year to visit some friends there and combining it with a trip to Venezuela and Colombia where I also have some friends.

Telemundo has had a habit of unexpectedly ending their novelas quickly if they are doing well in their ratings time slot hint hint.Something Univision should take into account.

I don't understand. Why should Univision end their TNs if it is doing well? It makes no sense at all. You would have unresolved storylines and the audience would be left hanging.

Another thing, The shows are being showed here on a delayed basis. They have already aired in Mexico and in some cases ended their run already. Besides that, Televisa is the one that makes the shows. Univision just shows them.

Ibarramedia

Yay naked scenes Connie! Yup I took a break. William Levy does nothing for me...I have sooo been waiting for this one to start. Woohoo!

Can't wait to watch it tonight. I'll have to look for epi 1 on youtube.

And I loved the doorman in Alborada. I would like to see him in another show with a bigger role.

I meant Telemundo has a habit of taking off or ending the novelas not doing well in the ratings of course it would not make any sense to end a novela doing so well.

I remember one novela Amores de Mercado with Paola Rey and Michel Brown they didn't cancel it but they took it out of it's primetime slot at night. I looked for it in the other time periods and eventually found they had moved it into the afternoon period.

Paola Rey and Michel Brown were at the time two of their big stars on Telemundo and it introduce one of their big stars now on Telemundo Carmen Villalobos.

So there is a precedent but i don't know if Univision does this as much as Telemundo. I remember someone was talking about the novela Victorinos and how quickly they ended it.

Vivi: Thank you for your comments. I always enjoy your insights so much and I hope you have a great time in Colombia and Venezuela. Colombia is beautiful and I envy you because I've always wanted to go to Venezuela.

Anon: When I was younger if a novela was doing poorly in Televisa at 9 pm and another was doing better at the 5 pm time the changed the times.

Now a days they still do that but they never change the 9 pm novela no matter what. They initially aired Mi Pecado at 6 pm but they story was too mature for the audience of that time, the producer wanted the 9 pm time but there was no way to move Sortilegio. They changed the novela at 7 pm and it did help alot with ratings. The producer wanted it latar but with Dinero being a huge success they couldn't put it at 8pm either. Even then, in its final episodes they had a better rating at 7pm than Corazòn Salvaje at 9pm.

I remember in the late 90's and early 2000's if a novela was doing poorly on ratings in Televisa they would do what you mentioned anon. The bad side was that some good novelas with different styles were cut before the audience gave them a chance. I remember one story in particular called "Atrevete a Olvidarme" that was pretty interesting because the main story was a mistery that a woman had to discover after losing her memory and going to Real del Monte to look for her grandpa and realizing she had lived there for a while and most of the people living there knew her and hated her. It only lasted 25 episodes because it didn't have the initial response in ratings that was common at that time. They had to do an extremely quick resolution.

Jarocha

Anon, I was the one that said that Victorinos was forced to end 2-3 weeks ago. According to my research, it was brand new and ongoing here unlike the most TNs from Univision and Telefutura where we are getting shows several months delayed.

From what I found out, Vicotrinos was produced by RCN Colombia and the Telemundo studios in Miami. When I wrote that info, They wanted Victorinos ended because they did not want to pay the actors for Feb. The end result was a mishmash of a rush job.

I never followed it religiously but I think it should have ended when 2 of the Victorinos were killed. They tried to extend it with disastrous results. They changed the show to include 3 Victorinas and have a baywatch-esque theme with Jessica Coralles who can also be seen in Vecinos on Telefutura at the same time slot!

It was freaking crazy and only lasted a month. They should have left it alone.

Ibarramedia

Jarocha are you talking about the one starring Jorge Salinas and Adriana Foneseca, it also had Alexis Ayala as the villain?

I don't remember the name but it was shown about five years ago in the day time i remember saying at the time how quickly that it ended.

Jarocha what is the status of CS are they extending it or is it ending in April in Mexico like it originally planned?

Can you believe that for La Duena they had the nerve to tell Adela Noriega in the most politest way that she was too big to play the role.

How sexist is that? Variopinta mentioned this on the Cristina page unbelievable,i would have went Simply Carloca on the powers that be if i was her.

What do you mean too big? As in overweight? Adela is kinda skinny.
I did not think she was overweight When I saw her in FELS and Really skinny in Alborada.

Ibarramedia

Corazón Salvaje was supposed to end in march, then they said it was extended for much more episodes but it was just extended for a month because La Dueña de Tu Amor was behind schedule for a month and a half since they had no lead.

I have heard of the rumors but supposedly they gave her a month period to lose the weight and she didn't lose it. She was aproached before for the role as she was the main choice of the producer Nicandro Díaz but at the time she was about to sign for a remake of "Abrazame Muy Fuerte" in Telemundo. The project never went anywhere and only then she went back to Nicandro to look for the role.

It is unfortunate that that happened to her but producers have the choice to look for a certain look for their lead characteres and it does not only happen to women, guys who were atractive and playing leads before have stoped getting those types of roles because they didn't keep their good looks, child stars stop getting parts because they grow up and stop being cute.

If the rumors are truth I don't think they were asking that much of Adela since she is naturally thin, more so than Lucero or Silvia Navarro who were also offered the role countless times. She is not an actress that tends to gain weight between projects either so I don't know how much she would have needed to lose.

Jarocha

Anon. Yes, that was the novela with Adriana Fonseca and Jorge Salinas.

Jarocha

Maggarita - no, you don't have to salute me.

thank you ibarrameda, jarocha and vivi for all the background race and culture information. :)

susanlynn - thanks for clarifying the two names. i wasn't quite sure about the names of the lady and man on the beach. I will make the changes to the recap using the names Mabel and Benny right now.

Jody :)

I've heard that both Mar de Amor and CS are going to be extended with a few weeks - again.

About Adela: after FELS she gained much weight.* I'm really sorry she didn't get the role of the duena, because I love her and I think it would be nice to see her in a gruffier, stronger role, but I understand the creator's choice.
