Gancho Wed Feb 3 #160 - Love notes, a role, growls, and a new friend?

Rolu announces to Arni that he needs to repursue Xime and begs him to help write a love letter to Xime. Arni finally agrees if Rolu will turn over the clorox!!

Lalu writes a "love" letter to Arni, Xime reads it and her burned eyes tell us it's really a "lust" letter. She tells Lalu he can't write something like that, it's not from his heart but other body parts and that he needs a professional love consultant, her! Get your pen out Lalu, youpi will be writing a newpi!!

Papi and Con discuss Issy. Pa tells her to stay away from Moni. Coni blames her for evrything bad, but Pa is not swayed, he prohibits her from getting anywhere near our Monkey. Ooooh.

Papi tells her to forget about Vale and do yoga or pick up a sport. HA! Guess what she has...boxing, and she is going to knock the living sh.. out of Valentina Lopez, who is national champion. He all but laughs in her face. It takes years to reach that level he tells her, no way you'll do it, now cut it out and leave her be or you'll answer to me. Basically. Hrmmph.

Issy is spewing more venom at Mau...Mau saying she deserves her Pa, her saying that Pa abandoned her in the trash too. She then plays a little game, ok let's go right now to tell her everything, including how much I hate her. You want this? Of course our boy's balls shrivel and he leaves without saying a word.

Back to Rolu and Arni, he's trying to think of something to say. He looks at the photo for inspiration. He says beauty, my love, you arouse so many emotions in me that I wanted to write them down to make them more tangible for you. He continues on about her as a surprise box that he opens and she's kind and candid, he loves all of her. Arni realizes what he said to himself and drops the photo. Rolu says it's a masterpiece and asks again if he's not gay. Arni repeats it twenty times. Echo Sylvia's comment, um not worried about your bro and your wife eh? Nice.

Over at the restaurant Xime writes a similarly inspiring love note about his sensual aroma and his company being the most beautiful thing. This is too cute, so are these guys going to end up together? Anvils are pointing this way....

Speaking of more anvils, Estrella is at Televisa chatting with Angelis and Nesma about her getting the part of the lover. She is over the top excited to be an actress. The anvil is lowering, you have to be with us for the whole show. A little lower...It will last 8 -10 months. Lower still....You have to watch your figure and your image. You are single right? Good, so sometimes gals get pregnant and it affects production a lot. Boom the anvil has smacked our queen. Whoops. Well if you are pregnant you should tell us now. Ha..not at all allowed in the US to even make such insinuations or questions. Anyway...Estre lies of course.

Back at the house Marc is still lecturing Coni, look Issy is my friend and Moni is her daughter and that's all you need to know. Speak of the Monkey, here she is, what's this crap about my Mom being alive and faking her own death.

Jacqui and Tere are together in the vecinidad chatting about Britney Sofia, the new maid over at Coni's. Jacqui misses Tere. tere misses kids. No one misses Coni, Jacqui knows how everyone feels about her daughter. She was waiting for Nieves who hasn't shown up, but there she is with Cesar. Jacqui notes them smooching.

Back over to the cold house, Coni asks Papi what she should tell Valentina. He is shocked it's her. She remembers him as the lawyer talking to Nieves. Coni wants to know what he was doing talking to the Mama of Beto. Whoops, anvil time, Nieves is that tapujo's (subterfuge's) Ma??

Jacqui meets up with Nieves who has nothing good to say to her, thinking she is there on behalf of her daughter. Nopis. It's about her ex-husband Marc. Que? Marc is your ex hubby??

Ok now we go back to the dueling chicas. Vale finds out he's Coni's pa and thinks he's bad for faking being a lawyer, Beto is worth gold, the one who isn't worth anything is this bitter Momia. They break into a fight and like the good papa he stands in the middle of his two supposed hijas and keeps them apart.

Back at Xime's she arrives with the note and tells Arni to read it and go for it and not let what happened to her happen to him, whoops, that wasn't supposed to slip out, I think. They look at each other very seriously. He decides to go read upstairs. Xime recovers from her look towards him and tells Rolu that he doesn't want us to see his true reaction and hopefully he'll enjoy the letter. Rolu wants to talk again about the shares. He thinks she should sell them, the business isn't really hers. She gets an idea of what she needs to do but doesn't tell us. Rolu gives her the love note, but she is too excited about her idea and leaves. She'll read the card later.

Back at the stone house the girls are separated but that is not enough to let evil words slip out like how Mona stole a married man but Momia got pregnant by her lover. Papa asks if she is pregnant and she says no. Mona reminds it's because she lost the baby, but she wonders if it was an accident or deliberate... Momia denies this to her Pa - this goes back and forth until he finally makes her say that was the worst mistake of her life.

And like magic we are in a park at night staring at that mistake aka Beto and Estrella walks up. They seem to talk to each other while merely talking to themselves. This was quite cool. Neither wants to go back to the vecinidad. She about to lose all of her dreams when they find out she's pregnant, and he swears off women forever, they ripped out his heart. He can't believe he lost his fantasmita, she can't believe she's having a bebita. In unison, un hijo, mi hijo. She for the one that comes, he for the one that has gone. Masterpiece.

Back again Papa Marc can't believe that Coni was pregnant and never told him. She asks what he would have done, come to Mexico to console her? He says of course. She says yeah you didn't even come for my wedding. Val says she's off, she just wanted to tell her not to mess with her Ma. Coni says she can't answer the questions re Ma, but ask Mau, he can tell her. marc escorts Moni off.

Xime is at Mau's new pad. He tells her he's in the street that Coni took it all. She curses Coni's badness, but...she can help. you are not in the street. I'm giving you my 10% of Grupo Sermeno!!! Claro que si!!!

Marc wants to invite Val to coffee, he wants to chat. In typical rebellious fashion, she refuses. he worries about her late at night. She says I'm a stranger why are you so worried. He's proud she's a boxer. Again why. Please accept my invitation, you are wrong. I want us to get to know each other better. He tells her she doesn't know who she is and what she means in his life. Whoa.

Kris, Wow. I can only repeat the word you used to define the Beto/Estrella conversation -"Masterpiece".

You had my total, rapt attention throughout and "youpi will be writing a newpi" and "the cold house" were wonderful.

Ximena and Arnie. There seems to be yearning and attraction, but leaving one mansib for the other is never a good idea.

Estrella always seems on the verge of happiness but never quite attains it. She now has the world at her feet. She should go for it! Take the job! We love her and so will the audience. I have no doubt she will become so popular they will incorporate her pregnancy into the storyline or work around it with lots of head shots and strategically placed objects. It's been known to happen on occasion!

Thanks again Kris for starting my day off with a smile.

Diana

Never a dull moment in Gancholandia, is there? I also loved the masterpiece scene with Estrella and Beto. They could actually be a great consolation to each other if only they would quit calling each other less than nothing. Oh the irony of it all.

Diana, good point about Estrella, poor chica, it always seems that what she wants is just out of her grasp. She's such a good-hearted soul. Maybe she doesn't always make the right decisions but she means well.

It does seem like the anvils are pointing toward Xime and Arni hooking up but that pairing is still hard for me to imagine. However I wouldn't mind Xime dumping Rolu. With his recent agreement with Marcos he has once again proven that he's a deceitful little rat.

And hooray for Xime! Giving her shares to Mauricio is a great idea!

Will we get to see Marcos and Xime face off? Wouldn't that be awesome? He's always in total control and used to things going his way. I think Xime would win though.

Now...where in the heck is Gabi and how is Salvador doing? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks Kris, loved the recap and your zippy, clever style is always a joy to read. Sipis, you are maraviguau, aja!

Kris, what an excellent recap of this very satisfying episode. Like you, Diana, and Sylvia, I was charmed by the scene with Beto and Estrella.

I loved the scene with Marcos and his 2 headstrong daughters. What a good actor he is. One could see and feel his pride coupled with frustration. He really has his hands full and we haven't even thrown Katia into the mix. King Lear had it easy compared to poor Marcos.

I could not stop laughing at Ximy's reading of and reacting to Lalo's letter. Even now I find myself chuckling.

The CCs were very much improved yesterday, with only a slight lapse near the end of the episode.

Thanks again, Kris for a super recap.

Carlos

Carlos, the CCs have been a bit better. Do you suppose our letters threatening to go to the FCC had anything to do with it?

I like how you compare Marcos to King Lear. It feels right.

My favorite part of Xime's conversation with Lalu was when she wanted a daiquiri, Lalu decided to have one too and said "OK then, two", and Xime ordered two EACH. This was completely symbolic of Xime and how she manages to turn things to her advantage.

Great Episode & great recap. Who knew that the writers were such students of French lit. First Moliere and now Cyrano. The look on Arny's face when he realized what he was saying -- and feeling -- was priceless. And I loved Xime's reaction when she told Lalu that the sentiments in his letter came from another part of his body than his heart.

I, too, was moved by the parallel monologues of Estrella and Beto. Each was touching in its own right but the interweaving under the light of the yearning moon was masterful. Not to mention the excellent timing of the two actors. That scee stands up to any drama anywhere.

Güera from Syracuse

Sylvia, you know, it seems like every time we write to complain, the CCs seem to improve shortly afterward. ¿Por casualidad? No sé. It was so nice yesterday however. Let's hope this keeps up for a while.

Carlos

Carlos, I think they just gave y'all our CCs. They have gotten funkier than usual this week. I hate to rely on them all the time and miss the wonderful acting, but..........

Great recap, Kris. I also loved the Beto / Estrella scene. And the "youpi" and "newpi".

I don't like the idea of Xime / Arnie. Just seems wrong somehow. But, hey, I'll just put on my beanie!

That Coni sure is a great actress - both the actress and the character. The way she hisses the final 's' in so many words - she could almost have a forked tongue!

Wow Kris...thanks for a stellar recap of an equally stellar episode. This was one of my favorites. Loved the poetic Estrella-Beto scene and the poignant dawning of recognition on Arnie's face as he dictated the love letter. Couldn't help feeling sorry for Rolu though as Ximena had so little interest that she dashed off without reading it. But Lord knows, he's earned her indifference.

Looks like Marcos is a typical Latino father, rules the roost and no explanations needed. Monita may not be happy to discover her biological parent but I'm certainly looking forward to the fireworks.

Thanks for another great one, Kris.

Emilia, I'm with you on the Ximy Arnie thing. She's too much of a race horse, and he's an hypochondriacal donkey.

I hope our Judy is OK. She is usually at the top of the comments.

Carlos

Hello all. Just a shout out to Capn Sylvia~~~Don't forget to watch Amor Real tonight because it's bath night at the hacienda. Enough said. I'm enjoying rewatching this delicious novela. I just wish that I could understand exactly what the characters are saying, but I only catch a few words. When you watch the dvd cutup version you miss seeing all the subtle changes the characters go through as Matilde and Manuel grow closer, Antonio and Nana grow eviler, and Adolfosolis grows crazier in loooovvvveeee. So, Sylvia, get your bath gel and rubber ducky and get ready for a good episode.

Hypochondriacal donkey? Love it!!

Thanks Susanlynn, I'm several days behind (boo hoo!) and have something to do tonight so might not see Manual the Beautiful until tomorrow. Well...maybe I'll take just a peek. Thanks for the heads up!!

Emilia, Racehorse and donkey..too right!

Everyone wring your hands in pity for poor Mikey, who had a crown prep this morning and will have to suffer through homemade mac and cheese this evening. Altogether now: "Pobrecito, Miguelito!"

Ay yi yi...you two (Emilia and Mike) have the same close relationship with the dentist that I do.

However home-baked macaroni and cheese is ambrosial. I only fix it if my son-in-law is visiting since it's not good for my husband.

But we all love it. I combine extra-sharp cheddar and Parmesan cheese for the sauce and put in chopped red and green peppers for color. It goes fast!

Carlos...thanks for worrying about me. I couldn't find Gancho this morning. It was in an odd place but located it when I got back from work.

"Hypochondriacal donkey"...as usual, an elegant turn of phrase. But haven't we learned that LOVE can change people?....and for the better? If Connie can withstand Beto's powerful goat-like aroma, maybe Arnoldo can get past his OCD/Germophobia and live happily ever after with magical Ximena.

I make the sauce with white wine rather than milk. Yum!

We are trying to get all our big dental stuff dine before Mike retires and the insurance goes bye-bye

I think Arni and Ximena would make a great pair. They balance each other. He already seems less OCD when she's around. Do we have any idea what he does when he's not visiting his brother?

Is there a strange correlation between being a member of Club Gancho and needing excessive dental work? I've spent a ridiculous amount of time in the dentist's chair myself lately. Best of luck to Mike, I mean Miguelito.

I'm a little jealous of the mac & cheese though. My grandfather used to make the absolute best. I think it had onion and nutmeg in it. I've tried to duplicate it, but it's never quite the same.

Great recap, Kris, tons of fun to read.

I love all the symmetry. We have Marcos and his two daughters, Beto and Estrella with their simultaneous monologues, Arnie ghostwriting the letter to Xime, balanced by Xime ghostwriting the letter to Arnie.

The arrival of Marcos has really allowed for a whole bunch of impactado moments, as each character learns of his heretofore unmentioned roles in their lives. He also provides some hope for Moni, parent-wise. Previously, it was hard to fathom how things could work out with Moni and Isabel, but now there's a parent who does love her (but she doesn't know it yet).

We wonder what happened to Sal (and Aldo, Oscar, Gabi, and several others whom we haven't seen much recently). I guess with the extension, the writers are just focusing on a few characters at a time, and they probably gave some a week off. I seem to remember in the endless days of FELS that some characters weren't mentioned for weeks, and later, it came out that the actors took rotating vacations.

Fortunately, though, we seem to have a lot of great developments every episode, and I agree, this was a really good episode.

Emilia, was this a Freudian slip, based on all our talk about food? You said "We are trying to get all our big dental stuff dine".

Best wishes to Mike.

oopsy! Dental stuff DONE, finito. Still learning to type... sorta

Good luck at the dentist Mike. Gee,let me extend my heartfelt sympathies on having to "suffer through" mac and cheese;). All of your variations on the recipes are making me salivate.

Gooey cheese. Yum! This blog always makes me hungry!

Diana (rethinking skipping lunch)

Kris - masterful recap, especially of the -as you said- masterpiece scene between Estrella and Beto.

Thanks, all, for the kind thoughts. I've never had to have a crown so this was a new and wonderful experience. Jaw's waking up and it's not so much painful as acknowledging that other people's hands and metal implements have been pushing and pulling away in my oral cavity.

So the assistant (an absolute sweetheart, ask Emilia) takes my blood pressure and it's "uh-oh" time. I ask her how bad it is and she says 154/88. I asked what it was when I was in for a filling a couple of months ago and she says 145/88. I ask her how much it was for my routine exam and she says 120/80. So I said I rest my case.

Very much looking forward to mi esposa's mac & queso tonight! This is gourmet stuff for sure. Every time we have this we think back to when we were first married and subsisting off boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese (16 cents at the time...) and hot dogs.

Hombre, good point about where some of our favorites have gone, but you're right, the recent episodes have been top notch.

Thanks all- yep hombre I agree this has to have been one of the most well written episodes in a literary sense. You laid it out better in that there were three symmetrys, the sisters, the maybe want tobe lovers, and the sulkers. I couldn't quite piece it together that way or I would have made that the title. I really found the Estre/Beto conversation brilliant.

Ah well, at least they are keeping this somewhat interesting. You know I wonder if I forgot to mention anything important that happened at the very begininning, I realize I started at a later point and forgot to go back.

I'm having a rough mental day today. It's good to know Caray Caray is there, even when I'm not around all the time. And especially Club Gancho. You all are such a great diversion from, well, crappier thoughts.

I sure hope the Estrella thing works out. That is a tough situation and one that bears out soo many times for sooo many folks. Children are wonderful, but timing is key, thankfully in the US there are certain employment protections from descriminating against that sort of thing. It happens I'm sure, and probably acting and image based positions have different provisions than other jobs, and well other dreams just never happen, but it's like Diana says, they could always alter camera views and what not. Whether they will want ot hassle with that for a newbi, who knows, but we wouldn't want her to follow one dream at the expense of another... :)

Oh and Miguel, if you must suffer through Dental work, homemade mac and cheese is the way to do it...enjoy

You all can add me to the list of folks needing dental care, thing is I can't pay for it, so haven't gotten it yet...much worse scenario!!!

Kris - understand as dental work is sky high, even w/ insurance. There is a dental insurance plan for mil retirees but the premiums are high and the benefits could best be described as third world, e.g., only amalgam fillings, even for front teeth. Right now we're on my employer's dental insurance but I maxed out my annual benefit this morning.

Ditto on astronomical dental costs. If it weren't for my dental woes, I'd be a cheap date. I never go to the doctor and never need to (other than pneumonia the year my "first" graduated from college and left town.) Separation sickness for sure!

Thank you Kris. Brilliant recap. Also so sorry you are having a crappy mental day.

Club Gancho:

I loved the Estrella/Beto scene as well. I watched it while taking a conference call and writing a grant proposal. It was so great that while I missed the details of most of the episode due to chronic multi tasking, I rewound to watch it again.

I will hopefully catch up with you all on the weekend. I am flat out with big-girl deadlines until midnight Friday.

PS:

Emilia and JudyB:
The mac and cheese sounds heavenly.

Hope you, Mike, and Julia, are recovered from your various dental episodes. I need to have work done and I am absolutely phobic. Arghhh.

JudyB, I hope you are now sitting pretty with no more pain.

EJ

Thanks EJ. Nopis, not sitting pretty yet. But able to cut back on Advil. So that's a good sign. Mantra: Healing is always at work. Healing is always at work.....(followed of course by a little sub-vocal whining) why me? why me? Except another student of mine has been diagnosed with cancer. So that stopped my whining pronto. She is a wonderful, vital lady who can out-dance all of us. And she's married to a physician so I'm hoping she'll get the best possible care and will be back with us soon.

Judyb~~So glad that you and your bottom are on the mend. So sorry to hear about your student. We do get wrapped up in our students' lives, n'est-ce pas ? p.s Is there snow headed your way ? We're supposed to get snow startinf Friday and going into Saturday. Bah. Basta !

Pobrecito Miguelito!!!! But I'll bet you're enjoying your honey's gourmet mac n cheese by now so I'm a little jealous. I'll bet we all need dental work from clenching our jaws as a result of watching telenovelas. Oh well, every passion has its price.

Kris, sorry you are having a tough day. Work, pffft.

Oh, yeah, y'all, the Mac 'n' Cheese was all one could hope it would be! EJ, you'll be pleased to know Emilia used a bit of a very nice Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc in the cheese part.

Mmmmmmm!!!! Hungry!

Mike and Emilia:

Sounds heavenly. For a really nice quaffing wine try Balletto 2007 Pinot Gris. It won a bunch of awards, it is pretty cheap, and it goes down like lemonade. Great with seafood, all you oyster lovers, and any white fish.

Big grin to you both.
