Club Gancho... raise your hand if you think the CCs are fine

Welcome Ganchodores. This week's featured drink is the Tequila Sea Breeze as we continue tracking Sylvia's amazing voyage while struggling to stay cool in this heat which most of us are enjoying in varying degrees.

Let me take this opportunity to update you on my efforts to try to encourage Univision to improve the quality of the CCs. I filed a complaint with the FCC and did stimulate a lot of attention from our local Univision provider. To make a long story short, a lawyer for channel 45 sent a response to the FCC which asserted to the investigator that they had looked into the matter and found that... surprise surprise... that they were in compliance with the law. He said that there were lapses of 6-8 seconds, which he thought was fine and apparently so did the FCC lady. I received a letter from her today declaring the matter resolved unless I pursue it further. I did get a phone number to call if I disagreed or had other questions. I've sent another Email to the lady representing Univision and am waiting for her reply. I plan to call the FCC lady, Cheryl King, if I don't hear from Ms Oliveres at channel 45 in a few days.

Meintras tanto... if you guys would like the phone number or Email address of Ms King, I'll post it in the comments. Now, once more, let's see a show of hands of those who think the CCs at Univision are just fine.

Elna June, you asked about the effect of the oil spill on our seafood from the Gulf. Thursday I had some oysters that were very good for this time of year, but learned that in a very short time, all the oyster beds along the Louisiana and Texas coast will be closed. The gulf shrimping appears to be close behind. I'm afraid that they'll not be back within my lifetime, so for me, and even more so for those whose livelihoods depend on Gulf oysters and shrimp... it is a very sad thing.

Now a few pictures representing young love

Luisa ... lamb

Andres ... wolf

Aldo ... puppy

Estrella ... Cougar?

Dani ... crowd pleaser

Ximena ... making a point

This has nothing to do with anything but for some reason I love this picture... one of those Walmart shoppers

Estrella... mama bear?

el Fantasma Vengador and Friend

Paula and CristianGabi and Coni... serious accusation

Carlos, gracias for opening up Club Gancho for another week. Just another iced tea for me. I'll sit in the shade on the patio and sip it dreaming of young love and sailing the seas.
I don't think Andres was as much of a wolf as we made him out to be. And, Estrella, not a cougar, too many connotations now with cougar and Estrella, just not old enough. :) A young lioness compared to Aldo's puppy.

Elna June, Tour de France, watch it every year. Been watching since the early 80's and there was one American in it, Jonathan Boyer I think his name was. During the 80's, could only find about 1 hour or so of it on the weekends, CBS Sport Spectacular or something. Got to be more of it once Greg Lemond started winning. I think early 90's, could be late 80's was on every day with ESPN, then OLN, and now Versus. I just love to watch to it. Now, TNs cut into it quite a bit. At least a rest day today. Back to the Alps tomorrow. Love the scenery. I don't ride enough bike myself any more, walk every day.

With everyone's comments last week, did score some sweet corn over the weekend and grilled up corn and potatoes Saturday night. Started our summer ritual, Saturday night vegetable supper, grilled corn and potatoes with and tomatoes. Corn wasn't as sweet as I like it, but it wasn't too bad. I'll have to look more closely this weekend to see who has corn at the farmer's market. Sort of forgot about it until the end and I had my hands full when I remembered the corn. Found corn right where I was, so bought that and went on my merry way.

Oh, and Carlos, thanks to you and others for doing the heavy lifting on the CCs. I do think they are on average better than they used to be. They do seem to waver and turn bad every once and awhile, but I think new and improved. :)

Carlos:

Thanks for hosting the party. I am so SAD to hear this news about the shellfish from your corner of our fine country. It is horrible to think of all of the people whose entire way of life/livlihood will have to change in order for them to survive. Not to speak of all the fish, birds, marine mammals and others who are suffering. Sigh.

Yeah, Jeff, another devoted Tour geek! I wasn't at all surprised that Lance came in for some bad luck. My goodness he has been just golden for so long! I hope he works really hard for Levi and/or Kloden and goes out with real bike racing class.

JudyB: Just how are you dear? Mike and Emilia and Vivi and Hombre:I hope you guys are surviving the heat OK. I have heard it has just been dreadful.

I have to look for sweet corn at the Farmer's Market Wednesday evening.

Hello to PaulaH. Just where are you in the Bay Area? Also, I intend to answer your last's weeks question about shining moments when my houseguests are gone. Just don't have time to write anymore right now.

Sandy in TN are you out there?

Go Sylvia and Cinnabar!

EJ

Good morning Carlos, Jeff and EJ.

Despite the heat, I will take my usual strong cup of coffee which will no doubt provide a brief but necessary caffeine boost this morning.

Carlos, while I don't use CC's, I appreciate all of your efforts to improve them. It sounds as though you are making notable progress.

While the oil spill affects all of us, I extend my deepest sympathies to everyone directly impacted, whose lives and livlihoods have been and will be devastated. This ecological disaster should stand as a warning and deterrant to anything similar in the future.

On a lighter note, Carlos, your pictures brought back so many happy memories. I must respectfully disagree with your captioning Estrella as a cougar though. A mother bear fiercely protecting her cub or as Jeff noted, a lioness might be better options.

After Friday, I will be away in Jersey for the next week and a half. I'll be visiting my brothers and aunt (amazing at 90). I'm sure I'll go "down the shore" for a day, walk the boardwalk and beach, savoring the sand between my toes and the smell of the ocean. I think few things in life are better.

Wishing all of you sunshine (with less heat). I keep thinking of Sylvia - what an adventure!

Diana

Carlos, thanks for opening the Gancho doors again. I’ll take you up on the Lucianne Tea, I’ll just hop over your back fence and grab a lemon from your neighbor’s tree, will a rolled newspaper deter the dog?

I’m just sick about the oil spill. We operate our lives with a benign trust of others who are in positions of responsibility, how could we have a situation in which an oil well shoots gallons of oil for weeks and weeks into the Gulf? The ramifications get more and serious each day… From what I hear, Saudi Arabia had a similar oil leak a while back and they got the skimmers over immediately and no oil ever reached shore.

Jeff, we do summer vegetable dinners too. Try this, cut steamed corn off the ear and combine with cooked baby lima beans, half and half. Brush tomatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper, bake them for only 5 minutes or so. Remove tomatoes from oven and cut off the tops then scoop out a little of the tomato. Fill that hole with the combined corn and lima bean mixture and serve…..wonderful!!! You can add chopped onion or red bell peppers to the corn mixture if you like.

EJ, we’re fine, thanks for asking. Have you unpacked all your boxes?

Well, Heck. I guess I'll put the Tequila away since ice tea and coffee are the preferred beverages this morning. Luzianne Tea of course and Hawaiian coffee, which was some of the best I've ever drunk. Sylvia of course will soon be drinking some right at the source.

I didn't realize that the pictures (well the captions at least))would provoke a minor controversy. Jeff, I agree that Andres never developed into the predator that we thought he might be. Perhaps wolflet, wolf-lite, or even sheep in wolf's clothing is more appropriate. As for Estrella, I too am very fond of the character, but I'm afraid that the definition (I suppose there is a definition of cougar) seems to fit. Diana, I'm a little queasy with mother bear and cub, though I really don't know if incest is that common among bears. I added a ? to the caption though. Perhaps cougarette? As for Aldo, hornpuppy might suit him better as well. I think the lamb appellation applies to Luisa though at times during the show, banshee might have been more appropriate. Maybe I'd best just post the pictures without editorial comments.

The big news here in Houston has all eyes turned to the Cockrell Butterfly Center of the Museum of Natural History. We are waiting with bated (in this case baited might apply) for the corpse flower (very rare here in US) to bloom. Crowds are gathering to witness this grand event due to occur today or tomorrow. I'm not sure if one must bring his own barf bag.

Sandy, that sounds absolutely delicious. Maybe sprinkled with Paula's Tajin powder. I love the local fresh vegetables this time of year.

Thanks to all for the concern for our Gulf Coast. Let's hope this latest effort to stop the leak succeeds and then let's get this mess cleaned uo.

Continued good wishes for all our Ganchodores and a special prayer for your brother, Diana.

Carlos

Thank you for your good wishes for Brian, Carlos.

I probably should change/clarify my comment about Estrella to say she reminds me a bear (taking mother and cub out of the equasion). She was fiercely protective of all whom she loved (particularly Moni and Aldo).

Every time I see your pictures Carlos, I get so nostalgic for the show!

Sandy, I'm salivating over your vegetable dinner. Yum.

Diana

Hi Carlos, Guess I'll start with iced tea and move to the tequila later on. We always use Luzianne for our iced tea.

Thanks for the photos. Leave in your editorial comments, please, that makes it all the more fun. What would we do if we couldn't squabble a bit?

Hello to Jeff, EJ, Sandy, Diana, and whoever shows up later.

Our heat has been, ummm hot, but mostly dry and bearable. Not the humidity has moved in - Mike describes it as "dogs' breath." But we are finally getting a few rain showers here and there.

Mike and I had sliced tomatoes mixed with a little olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Greek seasoning, pepper and feta cheese. We piled them on warm tortillas and that was our lunch on Sunday - yum!

EJ, please tell us about your 10 days of silence at your retreat. I'm certain that Mike would have liked for me to go with you!

About the captions - some nights ours are almost where they should be and some nights they might as well be from another tn for all the good they do. We wondered one night if the fellow responsible for rolling the captions was maybe trying to eat pizza at the same time.

In 1969 I worked in a TV station in the early, early morning. We had to type the 'crawls' on white ribbon and manually pull them across the bottom of the screen. Surely things have improved since then?!?

Hi, Emilia, Sandy, Diana, Carlos and all other beloved Ganchodores:

Diana, I think of your brother often—what adversity he has had this year! I, too, will do a special prayer for him. My he have abundant joy even in this terrible loss! Also, have a great trip to New Jersey.

Carlos: I must now extend an official invitation for you and the lovely Linda to visit us here. The Pacific is about 25 miles west of my home and the bays and inlets have some pretty great oysters—at least according to my son, an oyster lover from way back. The plan would be, drink a lot of wine (local, of course) and get you and Linda to Hog Island Oysters for a fix. I hear oyster addiction is pretty hard to break!

Sandy, so good to hear from you. No, I have not unpacked all my boxes. I am at, maybe 85%, I guess. Strangely, even though we are still remodeling the kitchen and are not fully unpacked and sorted, East Coast friends/family have come out of the woodwork with a desire to visit Sonoma County this summer. Grin. Do you think the appeal is the hubster and I, seven cats and a very upturned house, or could it be our (mostly) mild but sunny summer weather? Hahahaha.

Love the recipe. I will try it today.

Julia! I forgot to say hi to you! How is the weather in Seattle? Are you finally having a summer? Today my houseguests are coming from rain-weary Portland, OR. I hope your weather has been better than theirs.

Carlos, don't put away the tequila just yet. I'll have one of those fancy drinks you were talking about.

Emilia: How is Mike's new job? I'll write more about retreat in my next post.

Go, Sylvia and Cinnabar! Go Levi and Team RadioShack in the Tour de France.

xoxox to all,

Elna June

P.S.: What is Luzianne tea and why do I like it?

EJ, displaying a little west coast ignorance, but always willing to learn...My girlfriend from Texas swears she has never had a decent glass of iced tea here in California. Could our ignorance of Luzianne be the reason why this is so?

For the answer to this and other burning questions I await you kind replies,

EJ

EJ, I'm down on the Central Coast where the weather has been gray for more than a week. But gray weather makes delicious strawberries - they take longer to ripen, and the longer they spend on the vine, the more flavor they develop.

Mudberries (ones that saw rain) spoil fast.
Sunberries (ones that ripen during a hot spell) are sweet but don't have much flavor.
Fogberries just explode with flavor. And right now, since we are at the peak of the season, they are even better than a typical fogberry. So yesterday I made the run and picked up four flats from the grower for me and friends - spectacular!!!

Hola all.

I don't usually use the captions except when I'm recapping. Most of the time they are fine, just a few mistakes, but occasionally they are horrible and useless. I don't know why. Maybe the good captioner goes on vacation and they pull in someone who owes community service, but who doesn't know Spanish and can't type, to give it a whirl.

You all are welcome to some of our cool weather. Here, I'm blowing some toward you ))))))))). It was 51*F when I left home this morning but it's supposed to get as hot as 70* this afternoon.

We did have nice weather on the weekend, though. On Saturday I went skating at the beach, where a huge crew of pirates had just landed (this is part of Seafair). So I got a free cardboard pirate hat to wear, and listened to a (not very good) band, and watched a pole-vaulting competition.

Good afternoon Club Gancho!

I hope you all had a nice weekend.

Carlos I'm sorry for the way life has been altered in the states affected by the oil spill. We are extremely worried about that situation here in México as you can imagine, especially in the states with coasts on the Gulf.

I've been keeping up with the news and Phillip Cousteau (Jaques Cousteau's grandson) was talking several days ago about how this particular oil spill was very dangerous because of the pressure inside the rupture and how BP had to be extremely careful while stopping the spill because it may cause an explosion somewhere else on the ocean floor. That may have something to do with how much time has passed. Hurricaine Alex also made things more difficult. Hopefully this new cap they used will be successful.

Our specialist were anticipating the spill getting to Mexican coasts in august since last march but the government kept assuring that it was not going to happen. Unfortunately it seems an inminent thing now.

Jarocha

Hi everyone. Enjoyed reading all the comments and always love hearing about food. Sandy and Emilia, wish I had either (or both) of your meals right now. Sounds fantastic.

Elna June, glad you're getting settled in (85%) sounds good. Throw the other 15% away and you're done!

The cc's have seemed pretty adequate here in Columbus. As long as we dont' have macro-blocking, in which case, one can neither see, hear, nor read cc's, we're doing okay. However, my comprehension goes way down if I'm not using the ear phones. They really clarify the conversations for me.

Diana...you know my thoughts. We're pretty good communicators, you and I, but I'm especially delighted to know you'll have a week, not just of visiting family but of sinking your toes down into warm sound and hearing the sound of the ocean waves. The waves bring such peace to my spirit, wish I lived within earshot of the ocean by that is not to be. Enjoy and soak up every minute of your week's visit and come back refreshed and renewed.

Fogberries?? Paula, we're on the next train! We ate about 2 flats of NC strawbs this spring, every one of them delicious.

Mike's job is going ok. It will be better when he gets an office, a phone and a computer.... It's the commute that is a bear. (couger?) We have bridge/tunnels here, mostly bridge and then a dive underwater - so that any size ship can use the waterway (Hampton Roads) without drawbridges. Mike says a 3 mile backup going south and a 6 mile coming back north is the norm. No wonder he's pooped when he gets home. His last commute was about 7 miles!

I'm off to the nursing home to visit his mom. I'm getting to know the 'inmates' and have started to give manicures to a few ladies. Kinda fun and you can tell they are starved for touch.

Paula, I grew up in Pasadena, Texas which was once an area of endless strawberry fields. In fact directly behind our house when we first moved in was a huge strawberry farm. The strawberries were fantastic and must have been fogberries since a good bit of the time the city was immersed in fog. Now there are no strawberry fields but the city has a strawberry festival each year. I love strawberries. Wish I were there.

Elna June, thanks for the invitation. I've had west coast oysters and like them very much. They have a little more robust flavor than our Gulf oysters. Glad you are getting settled in.

Jarocha, sorry about the oil headed your way. This has been a fracaso from the very beginning.

Julia, I enjoy kvetching about the heat, but your weather is a bit cool for my taste. Glad you got to enjoy some beach time.

Judy, today you can dig right in to the foods under discussion. Right now here all the fresh vegetables are so abundant and so good. One of my patients has a fruit and vegetable stand that is right on our way home and I love stopping by and browsing. The hill country peaches are at their peak right now and are wonderful. I suspect that peaches and strawberries are consumed in heaven. (Probably sweet corn as well.)

Emilia, my heart goes out to Mike over his commute. I took advantage of my 40 min. commute after we moved to the country to learn Spanish from CDs. It worked pretty well for me. How precious of you to socialize with the other folks at the nursing home. Stars in your crown.

Carlos

Carlos, you're a man after my own heart. Strawberries, peaches, and sweet corn - I think that's the OTHER holy trinity! The could well be three of my five favorite foods, the other two being chocolate and cheese. I'm blessed to have direct connections to a strawberry grower and a peach grower, so I get both by the case, picked the same morning, fully plant-ripened. But good sweet corn still eludes me. I guess I'll need to schedule an early visit to the farmer's market, because it sells out fast.

Emilia, Carlos reminded me of something. Mike should investigate The Teaching Company, www.Teach12.com . Very well presented, very interesting lectures by professors at top notch universities. I was just listening to a fascinating series on the history of language. It does make the commute seem shorter. If you watch for the sales, you can get 18 hours of lectures on one topic, MP3 download, for $50.

Elna June, I thought that Luzianne Tea (And coffee with chicory) is sold pretty much everywhere. It has a very rich, bold flavor that stands up to ice very nicely. It's served in many if not most most of the restaurants here in Texas. I'm sure that your Texas friend would find it acceptable. If you'll Email me your address to

carlosloma@att.net

I'll be glad to send you a sample.
The coffee is excellent as well, but not everyone likes New Orleans style coffee.

Carlos

Hi, all. The heat in Baltimore has lessened a bit, and it has rained a few times, providing welcome relief.

I enjoyed watching the World Cup Final over the weekend. I really started liking soccer during these last few weeks. It helps that each team represented a country, and the matches were so close and filled with so much emotion and drama!

One show I had been watching was Las Muñecas de La Máfia. The Gran Final was last night. Remember when the Gran Final for one of our shows was 3 hours? The one for Muñecas was only 20 minutes! I'm not kidding. They basically killed off half of the people, the rest went to jail, except for the female lead, who ended up pregnant (but her boyfriend, the main druglord, never found out, and is now spending life in a US prison). I was a little disappointed in that they had spent so long setting up all the bad guys, only to have it over so quickly. I wanted them to suffer!

Now, I'm considering watching Rosario Tijeras, but from last night, the slang and the heavy Colombian accent really make it hard to understand the characters. And the captions don't seem to be working at all. This is Telefutura. Telemundo's captions are bad, too. So we should be happy that Univision's are working at least half of the time. Not satisfied, of course, but at least grateful for what we have.

Great to hear from all of you.

Today's snapshot... Dani

Vivi, Karen, check in please. Susanlynn, we haven't heard from you in a while. And Kris, Stephe, Cheryl, we miss you guys, and Mike, the ice in your mint julep is starting to melt.

Carlos

Thanks for adding Dani, Carlos. I remember at the very start of the novela, her acting was pretty gauche and I was uncomfortable with her; but she really developed into quite a creditable little thespian. Still missing Gancho days immensely. Oh well...Fea Mas Bella and Gancho. Two super shows in what...four years? Well, that's not bad.

Fea? Fea? Did somebody say Fea?

Ah, little Dani... Thank you, Carlos. She just kept getting better and better, bless her heart.

Hombre, glad your weather is a little more tolerable. Ours is cooler, but the humidity is such that we're not sure there is any air outside!

All this talk of fresh fruits and veg have changed my plans from the bookstore to the farmers' market. Paula, you and I have the same favorite foods. (Y'all do know the four southern food groups? salt, sugar, grease and alcohol!)

Paula, I'm not sure what Mike listens to as he inches along the highway. I'll give him your suggestion, though. Thanks...

Excitement at the nursing home yesterday - the fire alarm went off and the firetruck full of handsome, young, buff, ummmm.... where was I? Oh yes, firefighters, right firefighters, came to check it out. Did I say buff?? Great entertainment for the oldsters, since there was no fire. Turns out the heat sensors in the attic were on the fritz, so the heat sensor repairman (probably NOT buff!) was summoned to fix them.

We're tracking Sylvia's progress on her way to Hawaii. I hope she's having a wonderful time.

I just noticed that none of the pictures that I've posted so far this week have any happy faces. This afternoon I'll try to find a photo of someone who looks happy... or maybe lusty.

Paula, want to talk about la Fea? I loved that show almost as much as Gancho. Lety, Fer, Tomás, Alicia, Omar, Luigi... what a great cast and what delightful memories. OK, maybe the detour to Acapulco could have been stronger... or left out entirely. I also was very fond of Juan Querendon, though I think that Mike and several others had big problems with Paula. I see Juan Jr. a lots in ads for cereal and pizza.

Sylvia is over halfway to Hawaii.

Still waiting breathlessly for the corpse flower to bloom.

Emilia, excitement at the nursing home? Glad it was a false alarm. Probably a good test for several pacemakers.

Carlos

Breathlessly for the corpse-flower to bloom. Then you really will be breathless, if it smells as advertised!

And, yes, Carlos, I hadn't thought about the pacemakers. The firefighters probably got their hearts going pitty-pat again!

Today's snapshot... anybody missing Ximena?

Carlos

Carlos, I could talk about Fea until the cows come home, as ALL my friends will attest! The character development was spectacular - nothing else comes close! Many people hated the Aurora phase (the period from when Lety broke the engagement, to the end). Of course I was angry about how they tacked on that part with zero plot continuity. But apart from that, there really was a lot to love about the Aurora phase.

Conversation starter: what did you love most about Fea?

Emilia:

What is it with firefighters? Those folks tend to be real specimens and brave, too. And the four food groups...love it.

Carlos:

Do I miss Ximena? Are there cows in Texas?

EJ

Paula, I loved the romance between Leticia and Fernando, I liked the easy camaraderie between Fer and Omar, Alicia was always a hoot, but the single thing I loved the most was the wonderful endearing and enduring friendship and trust between Lety and Tomás. The chemistry between them was always so believable and so refreshing.

Elna June, so do I.

Carlos

Yikes Carlos. That Walmart photo is scary. How about some buff firefighters?

Well, here is a firemen photo for you, Judy.

Wow, been busy here at the Club. Carlos are you keeping up with al of those drinks. We've been keeping you busy. :)

Got home yesterday and we had to do our walk, then eat, and then I had to go to my Astronomy Club. I was hoping to get back in time to watch Schleck and Contador tear everyone to pieces climbing Col de la Madeleine, but they were already on the other side by the time I got home. Stayed talking to long in the parking lot.

Judy, new job is going good. I like it so far. There's plenty of stuff that seems old hat and plenty of new stuff to keep in somewhat challenging and busy.

Sandy, the tomato dish sounds interesting. We would have to do some kind of variation on it. My wife will not eat lima beans, not a favorite of mine either, but she flat out won't eat them. She does like any kind of bean like that, baked beans, etc. She is from New Mexico where frijoles reign and everyone eats them, but she will not. :) That's why we would have trouble as vegetarians like Judy as beans supplies a lot of the protein and we wouldn't have them. I love baked beans. Just not much into lima beans.

Diana, that's right. Estrella was quite protective. Perhaps Carlos can find a picture of her in her mother bear mode.

Emilia, your little tomatoes and tortillas dish sounds good. We'll have to give that a try sometime, too.

Paula, also for the Teaching Company, anyone who may want to see them, check your local library. We checked out quite a few of them from the library.

Today's snapshot is for Jeff. Estrella is in full protective mode in this shot. The guy is Mao's disloyal chauffeur who is searching the barrio for Monita.

Still waiting for the corpse flower (Lois) to bloom.

Carlos

Hi folks. We're taking off for Charlotte tomorrow but enjoyed the latest photos, including yours Paula. That trio...definitely buff.

Jeff, my word, no frijoles for you all. Amazing. My husband was raised on cheeseburgers, but fortunately he likes beans, baked, lima, any old way. So no problem. Glad the job is a nice blend of familiar and new. Good mix.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Well, sometimes links work and sometimes they mess with you. Anyway, sounds like everyone's doing well. Emilia's told you about my new job. Work's fairly interesting, but the commute through the bridge tunnel sucketh mightily. Twenty seven miles each way usually takes an hour going their in the morning, about an hour plus fifteen to get home. Whine.....

Julia, we really need to negotiate a temporary abode swap so Emilia and I can cool off and you can come enjoy our lower 90's temps.

Carlos, "Lois"??? Oh, hey, where did you have your Thursday lunch today? I'm afraid you're right about the damage to Gulf seafood lasting a generation.

I'd never tried oysters till about three beers into the seafood buffet at the Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS) O club one night and figured there wouldn't be a better time to try one. Superb, plump, taste of the sea, sublime little bivalve! Life changing experience.

We could have a good debate over where the best oysters are to be found these days. Almost afraid of the few remaining Chesapeake Bay ones, especially this time of year. We went to Ft Walton Beach once and the Appalachicola ones were really good. Had some in Seattle a couple of years ago that were really nice too.

Mike, good to hear from you. Your commute each day is about the same distance as ours, but doesn't sound quite as pleasant. Do you use your motorcycle on pretty days?

Yesterday we ate at a new (for us at least) Mexican restaurant, Alicia's. It's very pretty and comfortable but the food is only so so. I'm looking for some great carnitas these days and though OK, these were not the end of my quest. Linda had the aljambre (shish kabob) beef and shrimp. She said that it was great.

At last the well has been capped.

Lois (the corpse flower) is still dragging her feet.

Carlos

Carlos, maybe Lois is waiting for you all to do a séance. Say, I know of a crazy old lady who could help you out with that...get directions from Ximena.

Mike, it's 55* here right now, and you're welcome to it. Condolences on the tedious commute. Sounds like audiobooks would be almost a necessity.

Good Saturday morning Ganchodores. I posted a new photo yesterday (Beto as FV and Coni) and one this morning (Paula and Cristian). It's fun seeing those familiar faces. Un Gancho al Corazón had a few slow spots but nothing like Dinero is going through at the moment. CS was also dragging until Val shot JM last night.

The folks at the Butterfly Center have resorted to trying to stimulate Lois (the balky corpse flower) to bloom using the scent of rotting bananas. Maybe some corpse flower porn videos would help.

The Cinnabar is rapidly closing in on Oahu. Several of the boats have already sailed in. Sylvia and her crew should be arriving sometime early tomorrow.

My TV returned early this morning all fixed up. Works good... so far. I'm looking forward to recapping Dinero beginning in the middle of August, alternating Fridays with Hombre. Sure hopes the action has picked up a bit by then. Gonna miss Floresazul's recaps, however. She'll be a hard act to follow.

I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend. Hot but beautiful here. A spot of rain would make things perfect.

Carlos

Hi y'all. Carlos, Thanks for all of the photos. Sure make us miss Gancho.

We have been watching Sylvia and Cinnabar also and have been delighted with their progress. Hope they are having the time of their lives.

Hot, hot, hot here and no rain to speak of. A few drops yesterday but not enough that the cars or the driveway looked wet. The splats didn't even touch each other! We'll probably look back on this summer fondly about February. (or maybe not!)

Hope Judy is having fun in Charlotte with the grands.

Our youngest child is here for the weekend so he and Mike are getting ready to visit Mike's mom. I'm taking the weekend off since I go every weekday. She won't notice anybody but her grandbaby (who is 27) anyway!

Hola Ganchodores:

Julia: I am SO sorry about your weather. Our friends from Portland just left. They were delighted with our sunny but mild summer. We may just have to have you come down here.

Jeff: I like Schleck over Contador in the Tour, but that might be just hopeful thinking. Contador has NO personality.

Carlos: I mostly eat vegetarian but I make an exception for perfect carnitas. O divine pig! Also, the Cuban version of carnitas with lemon and black beans is, well, it's just fabulous.

Emilia and Mike: So good to hear about Mike's job and the visit of your son. Hopefully, seeing him will really cheer up Mike's mother. Your commute sounds brutal, Mike—we Californian's can truly sympathize.I second Julia's recommendation—Books on tape!

Sandy, JudyB, Diana, PaulaH, weekend greetings to you.

Carlos: How did Lois come by her name?

Woooo Hoooo!! SYLVIA!! SYLVIA!!

Cinnabar was 9.4 nm out from the finish making 9.9 knots at 0600 EST time this morning. She should have crossed the finish juat a little more than an hour later. Alas, in the middle of the night Hawaii time, but a finish is a finish and a celebration's a celebration!

Congratulations, O Cinnabar and crew!

Lost: Mikey's math skills.

So I double checked using my trusty old E6B, Computer, Air Navigation, Dead Reckoning, and find that, at 9.9 knots and 9.4 nm out, Cinnabar had 57 minutess to run.

If you find Mikey's math skills, please drop in any mailbox. Return postage guaranteed. Estoy verguenzada.

Cinnabar finished at 1:00am Hawaiian time this morning. Congratulations to Sylvia and her mates. What a great adventure. Now it's party time in Hawaii.

Elna June, Lois was named for the mom of one of the former staffers of the museum. I'm sure she felt quite honored having a stinky plant named for her. As far as I know, her bloom still hasn't opened.

Nice rain here this morning. Not a bad Summer so far... as Texas Summers go.

Elna June, Julia, Paula, thanks for all the suggestions. We may have a couple of books on tape around here. Also, I want to check out iTunes U and podcasts.

So far, NPR fatigue has yet to take root. But since the radio signal disappears in the tunnel - usually during the most interesting segment of the drive - there's a need for something.

Mike, if the signal disappears during the interesting part, you'll have to download the podcast of the show and listen to the whole thing a day late. :)

Elna June, Schleck has a personality? Well, I suppose a little more than Contador. Schleck needs more than a 31 second lead over Contador before they do the time trial. If not, it's Contador. But, still have three more stages in the Pyrenees. The last one ends on a climb of the Col du Tormalet. That may decide it. Interesting day today. Menchov and Sammy Sanchez looked pretty good. Poor Levi dropped down from 6th to 7th even though he hung in pretty good. All of the other top riders did good, too. Schleck and Contador played cat and mouse and gave 14 seconds to Menchov and Sanchez, not a good idea as you never know. Armstrong has pretty much disappeared. I thought we would see more of him helping out Levi in the mountains, but it looks to be just Kloden and Horner helping him out.

Jeff, thanks, that's a great idea. Most of what's on NPR doesn't get stale in a day, so why not.

Hello, everyone. I will have something cool and icy since the heatwave continues. Day after day in the 90s is very unusual for here. Diana~~I hope that you have a lovely time down the shore. I love it there, and we go to our favorite b and b in Cape May every year. It's about a 3-hour drive. I like to walk along the surf early in the day before the crowds appear and after 5 when the lifeguards go off duyty and people start to leave. The last time we went, I collected an armful of conch shells the morning we left to add to my growing collection. I like to look at them in the winter when it's cold and snowy here. Emilia~~You are a good soul. Wow, Sylvia is having quite an adventure. Good on her. Well, I'd better get some chores done before going over to my daughter's to babysit Janie. Today is Hub's birthday, so we'll go out for a nice dinner together. [I love veggies and fruit , and I appreviated the recipes. We often make ''veggie packs'' for the grill ....zucchini, potatoes, mushrooms, and onions wrapped in aluminum foil. Very tasty.]
