La Fea Más Bella #61-62 10/26/10 La dueña de mi vida.

Capitulo 61

Read Julie’s original recap which covers Cap’s 61 to 64, and also her introduction. Then come back here to discuss it.

We now shift into Julie's recaps which cover the next 40 episodes. She recapped the first episode she ever saw! I cannot begin to imagine doing that! If you've never read Julie's recaps, you're in for a treat. Note, I don’t know where the episode breaks are in Julie’s old recaps, and besides, our current episodes might end in the middle of an episode. For that reason, as you read the old recap, you might end up reading part of the next day’s show. If anyone wants to post details of where (in Julie’s recap) our 2010 broadcast ends, go ahead! You’re not stepping on my toes. Otherwise, let the reader beware.

There are several significant points in this episode that are hard to spot the first time around. Pardon me if I take a little extra space to define them. The first was the crab canon toast, repeated from the last cap.

1. The HaHAs ask Tom why FI hasn’t finished the process (e.g. take ownership of Conceptos). Sanchez implies that their waitress is a “working girl,” but Tom doesn’t get it.

2. At the antro, Ricardo Montaner sings “Nada,” and Fernando is stabbed to heart by the lines, “My burden of conscience does not let me breathe. And my people ask me, What’s going on with that woman. I say nothing. I was the owner of nothing, and I did not even know why.” Lety is stabbed by Fernando’s pain. She sees nothing but him, and he doesn’t notice her at all.

3. Fernando resents Marcia’s phone call (the first of many, many, many), checking up / spying on him. But she’s pacified because he’s with Lety. Lety starts to tell Fernando something. The scene is cut short; we don’t see her tell him that Tomás is 1% owner of FI. Ricardo sings “Besame la boca” and greets Fernando and his “pretty companion.” He calls Lety Fern’s novia and says, “Viva los novios!”

4. Tomás asks the HaHAs why Fernando would ever enamorar Lety. As a demonstration, they tell the waitress that Tom is partner in a company worth millions, and she’s all over him. Sanchez says wealth can make a person very attractive. He’s still trying to figure out why Lety is so friendly with her debtor.

5. Lety is nervous about everything, so she tries to keep Fern from saying anything else he’ll regret. Just like in her dance floor fantasy, the song "La dueña de mi vida" plays, and Fernando asks her to dance. Lety prays quietly, “Please let it not be a dream!” Meanwhile Fernando thanks God for Jalisco (the source of tequila).

6. Erasmo and Julieta remember back to when they were novios, their first kiss, and how they filled each other’s thoughts.

7. The dance carries Lety to heaven, and Fern to the inferno. She tells him that he’s drunk and he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Fern says, “I’ve realized I couldn’t stand it if you were gone. I would miss you .. as a woman. When I heard you had a novio, I was upset because I’m jealous of Tomás Mora!” Lety walks away, trying to escape. He catches her, he kisses her, she kisses him, and she runs away.

8. Lety floats home. Mama knows something’s different. Lety writes in her diary, her dream came true. But she knows he’s not for her. He’s engaged to Marcia. She realizes, “Tomorrow, if he regrets that he kissed his fea assistant, I’ll have to leave. And he needs me!” Fernando stumbles into Marcia’s apartment, pours another drink, and picks up their engagement picture for comfort, but he drops it.

9. In the morning, Omar wants all the juicy gossip, and Fernando can’t stand him acting like such a pig. Fern says he betrayed an angel. If she doesn’t have feelings for Tomás, he has committed the worst mistake of his life because it wasn’t necessary. Game over. She thinks he doesn’t remember, and he’ll never do it again. Omar tells him he needs to kiss her again, sober, so she believes it.

Capitulo 62.
Read Julie’s original recap which covers Cap’s 61 to 64. Then come back here to discuss it.

1. Money worries all around. Fernando worries he can’t make payroll. Tom worries FI can’t pay its loan. Lety’s worries about it all. The employees can’t wait for today’s paycheck, which won’t come.

2. Fernando tells Omar he’s like a devil on his shoulder, whispering “Enamorarla!” And he looks awful in red latex!

3. Saimon is eager for Paula to present him to her parents as her novio, but she says they’re not novios. But at least she assures him she’s not close to anyone else. Until one of her ricos calls.

4. Marcia rips into Lety for kissing her man. She accuses her of being a man-stealer, taking advantage of Fernando while he was drunk, and plotting to steal him all along. Marcia says he loves her and he’ll never be for Lety. She wants Lety’s resignation, and she’s going to tell everyone, including Erasmo, what a terrible person Lety is. But it was a fantasy.

5. Alicia goes to Fern’s office to demand her paycheck, and Lety moves to her shield-bearer position. The kiss has changed her position with Fernando. Fern tells Ali payday is delayed a few days.

6. Lola fights with Jazmín. I thought Luigi fired her! Lola breaks Jazmín’s phone. Ali tries to be her patron. Lola claims it was an accident. Lopez takes the side of the ones with big boobs. He orders Lola to pay for Jazmín’s phone. She refuses and is fired.

7. Lety overhears Marcia telling Alicia that Fernando was out drinking with Omar and Lety. She says she won’t do anything; she’ll save her energy for when she has to fight against a REAL woman. Ali jokes about Lety’s ugly clothing then complains that no man pays attention to her despite her beauty.

8. Tom asks Julieta for advice to win Alicia. MamaJ tells him to write her a love letter.

9. Juana threatens Lopez, that if he fires Lola, the cuartel quits. He’s delighted; he can’t wait to get rid of them.

Pata, thank you for the screenshot. I always appreciate it.

Watch the soup! The scenes are out of sequence.
A. At the end of Cap 61, Lety goes to get the soup.
B. Then early in 62, the soup is magically on his desk already.
C. Then the soup is magically gone.
D. Then she BRINGS him the soup.
At the same time, her phone call is also out of sequence. She doesn’t answer it when it rings, and she does answer it when it doesn’t ring.

Erasmo is so worried about Tom using his house phone. My friend tells me, in Mexico, landline calls can easily cost 50 cents per minute, USD.

Notice that after the kiss, Lety tells her father a boldfaced lie, that Saimon brought her home. Did the kiss change her?

Lety’s biggest fear? That he’ll regret the kiss and she’ll have to resign. And Fernando needs her! Her only concern is for his needs, not her own, even to the point of losing the love of her life.

With one kiss (well, two) he converted from “she’s too ugly,” to “it’s too cruel.” That’s a profound change. Keep in mind, it’s not just an excuse. At the morning rehash, he thinks he doesn’t need to go out with her again. So he honestly is most disturbed by the cruelty. Unfortunately, even his guilt is self centered. It’s all “I did a horrible thing” and not “Poor Lety, how will this affect her?”

Omar rehash. Fernando says, “It wasn’t necessary, she doesn’t love Tomas.” So why does Omar push him to kiss her sober, if Fern just established that Tomas is not a threat?

So what do you think, Paula. Is Omar just malicious. Is he enjoying being a sideline watcher of Fernando seducing la fea? Or is he deeply afraid and figures they need to suborn Lety rather than just relying on her natural loyalty to help them out when needed?

Haven't seen this and I think I ran out of tape before it recorded all of it, so I especially appreciate your and Julie's recapitulation of the events.

Hi Paula. I really liked these two episodes. Lety was so much fun to watch her excitement when Ricardo M. was singing. Didn't enjoy the cuartal so much at the end but it was kind of funny when Lopez took advantage of Jauna's show of solidarilty with Lola and was set to fire them all.

So thanks again Paula

What's Omar's game? Honestly I haven't found a good answer to that question. I have some thoughts swimming around. I'll attempt an answer tomorrow.

In Lety’s fantasy, Marcia gives voice to all Lety’s guilt and fear – that she’s a bad person, that everyone will find out, that she plotted to get Fern to kiss her, that he’ll never be for Lety. I think the fantasy is a way for Lety to yell at herself for her “crime.”

It is Fernando’s actions which steer HIS attitude toward Lety.
A. Back at Day 1, he was repulsed by her ugliness, but he needed an alternative to Alicia.
B. The more he depended on her, the more she proved herself, and the more he trusted and valued her.
C. Eventually they were so golden together, he entrusted his company to her.
D. As soon as he gave her his company, he started to distrust her, so he had to enamorarla.
E. The seduction plot made him forget her sweetness and see only her ugliness.
F. After the kiss, he is disgusted with himself, thus again sees what an angel she is.

I finally got around to seeing these episodes. Judy B. brings up a good question about Omar. I think his motivations are complex. To begin with, I think he regards Fernando as his brother, and he genuinely wants to see him succeed. But also, his own job/career depends on Fern's success. After all, he is not the swiftest and must know that he wouldn't be a Vice-president of such a large, prestigious firm if not for his friendship with Fern. And although he is not one to accept responsibility for his actions,he has to feel some guilt about the Panama contraband. He clearly sees Lety as their savior --which is the reality-- and I don't think he is hostile to her directly, or even feels threatened enough by her vis-a-vis his relationship with Fern.. At one point, he agreed with Fern who was enumerating Lety's virtues. But he definitely views her with amusement and sometimes scorn as a woman, if he views her as a woman at all. In his shallow way, he simply views her in an instrumental way -how she can help them- and not as a person at all. Also he seems to really be getting off on the fact that Fernando has to woo her. It is a bit malicious, and probably comes out of the fact that he is competitive with Fern on the level of who's the better seducer/mujeriego/ladies man. So for that reason, it gives him some payback pleasure to see Fern in this position, as Fern is definitely more successful with women than he is. I don't see him as a villain; more as a case of shallow arrested development.

Thanks for your hard work, Paula. am really looking forward to tomorrow's episode, which is the only one I haven't seen. (I have the full set and this part of it was missing).

Terrific recaps both Julie and Paula. Paula you're right, Julie's recaps are delightful. Julie, it's fun to read your early work.

Paula, your observations and editorial comments are always fascinating. I also enjoyed NJSue's comments about Omar. "Arrested development", yes I think that's a good description of him. It doesn't seem like he thinks too far ahead in the long term but more in short term fixes. Lety likes Tomas so Tomas can influence her, if her affections switch to Fernando then Fernando can influence her.

I felt really bad for Lety when she overheard Marcia's comments about saving her energy for a real threat. Ouch, that hurt.

I noticed the soup thing. I was wondering why she'd bring him a second bowl of broth when he didn't even want the first one!

Regarding the landline - I read a few years back that the family that owns the media empire that includes Televisa and Esmas also owns the phone company in Mexico, and the high cost is one reason why cell phones are so freakishly popular there.

Judy, about Omar, I think the way he's goading Fern into romancing Lety is just a reflection of how he sees the world (thus a reflection of his own character). He assumes that Lety will do what he would do in a similar situation, and that she is motivated by the same things he is: only the promise of sex/romance with a more appealing person will convince her not to take the money and run.

Plus, all the stuff that NJ Sue said about being competitive with Fern as a womanizer and being amused by Fern's discomfort certainly rings true.

I think Omar is too self-absorbed to consider the real damage that might result from his scheme. Not only the damage to Lety, as well as to Fernando and Marcia - but to himself, too. If the plan fails, Omar will be up the creek too.

Also, in Omar's defense - he's an idiot. Seriously. He never seems to get anything right except by accident.

I noticed tonight that Fern didn't scrub his lips with mint leaves from his cocktail, as I said in the recap. It was foliage from a decorative tree or something. Mmmm. Yum.

It's funny that he was the one scrubbing lips. As he was kissing Lety, I kept thinking that after drinking all day long he must have some really awful fumes coming out of his mouth.

I'm also laughing that I just happened to catch Ricardo Montaner in my very first week of episodes. I had no idea who he was, nor the significance of "Besame," but I sure know now!

In the rehash after the kiss, Fern and Omar are in totally different worlds. Lety awakens Fern’s better self, at least momentarily. Is this Fern & Omar’s first step apart?
A. Omar thinks Fernando is sickened because he kissed someone so fea. Fernando is sickened because he did something horribly cruel.
B. Omar relieved Lety feels nothing for Tomas. Fern is horrified by the fact because he didn’t have to betray her like that.
C. All Omar can think is risk for business. All Fernando can think is that he betrayed an angel.

The landline phone service is controlled by Carlos Slim of DF, who alternates with B Gates & W Buffet as Forbes' richest man in the world.

Whenever I hear Montaner's song, I also think of "Besame Mucho." In 2009 we were on vacation in SC. For grins we went to "South of the Border." Kitchiest place on earth. There is a dichoso Mexican restaurant that plays Besame Mucho, constantly. It's in an endless loop. Can you imagine working there? 40 hours per week of Besame Mucho!!!

Last week Luigi told Fernando, "You are dominated by the animal inside." Fernando needs to destroy the animal inside, if he is to break free. They used to treat amoebic dysentery (worms, i.e. an animal inside) with medicianl arsenic. It would kill the worms and not the patient. It would just make you WANT to die!

Well, Fernando has had his first arsenic treatment. He didn't recognize how perfect Lety was, nor the gravity of what he did, until he betrayed her. Now his guilt is tormenting him, and it's also slowly working a change on the animal inside. It will take a lot more than this to cure him. But it's a start.

Wow. What a great discussion all of you. Thanks for those thoughtful comments.

Paula, great point! and yes I agree that this is the first major event that sets Fer and Omar apart, their reactions to the 'first kiss night'.
and regarding 'Besame mucho' I too have a humorous story behind that. Back when I was single I was looking for something to do at night so I joined Arthur Murray dance and began taking lessons. well, I knew how to dance latin music, just did not know the genre names or names of the steps, so my teacher had a hard time finding something to teach me... but meanwhile he would use 'besame mucho' to teach me rumba. Well, at one point he asked me to translate the song for him... you can imagine when almost all I could say while we danced was 'kiss me... kiss me a lot... ' (repeat)... LOL

and as far as comparison with the corresponding scenes in BLF, Armando has such a huge hangover, he can't think straight that much the morning after the first kiss, but in his few moments of straight thinking, he is just as much 'drowning in guilt' as Fer...

at least my dance teacher was young and handsome... but it still made me embarrassed to translate that for him

the other key moment yesterday, IMO, was the moment Lety was outside Marcia's office listening to her and Alicia mock her 'potential' as a competition for Marcia for the love of Fernando... remember this is after the first kiss, when Lety still is thinking of not even mentioning anything to Fernando and making it as if the first kiss never happened, all to be able to stay by his side... but Marcia and Alicia's mocking her might have something to do with Lety's behavior the rest of this day.

here is the clip from my BLF translation, replaced the names to go with the LFMB names. It might not be word for word with the LFMB scene, but they were close if not identical...
Ali wants to know what they did last night, get drunk. Marcia tells her no, that Fernando, Omar and Letty went to a tavern for an hour and Fernando arrived at her place very drunk. (by now Letty is outside Marcia’s door and can hear their conversation) Alicia tells her she should not permit it. Marcia tells her that she is not going to fight over something silly like that. She is going to save her fight for when he goes out with a real woman. Marcia asks Alicia if she can imagine how Fernando must have felt having to walk into the tavern with Letty. They burst out laughing. (Letty is outside the door listening to the conversation. Letty looks like she wants to cry.) Alicia tells her that she should still do something. She says that with Letty's involvement in the company that she gives her a little space Letty will take away her boyfriend. Marcia says no, that it will not happen. Letty knocks at the door and enters to get the report. Marcia and Alicia continue laughing at her. They mock Letty’s looks today, worse than yesterday… Alicia comments that maybe Letty is taking advice from the guy that does her hair. (Letty finally leaves the other side of Marcia’s door, she is angry)

I will try to transcribe the next Lety/Fer conversation tonight.. it is a critical milestone in the story.

What is Omar’s game? Good question, Judy. The two most likely explanations, según yo, are either to protect the company, or for sport. But both theories have serious flaws..

Explanation 1. Fear Tomás will take her and thus take Conceptos. Somehow that angle doesn’t ring true. Yes, he considers it possible and it would worry him.
A. He has no morals so he can’t believe anyone is trustworthy.
B. No one could be attracted to Lety, so if Tomas is dating her, it must be for Conceptos.
C. Omar has a keenly-honed survival instinct, and the mention of Tomas sets his spider sense tingling.

BUT. I’m not wholly convinced that’s what motivating him. Because…
A. When Fern is positive Lety has no feelings for Tom, Omar keeps pushing the seduction.
B. He appears fearful for Conceptos ONLY when he’s pushing Fernando because he knows the presidency is Fern’s Achilles heel. He can push that button and manipulate Fern however he wants.
C. But when he’s not manipulating Fern, he doesn’t seem afraid for Conceptos. Rather he seems gleeful about the plot itself.

Explanation 2. Sport / rowdy prank / voyeurism. This explanation has some merit.
Everything’s a joke to Omar. So the idea of super-stud Fernando saddled with the ultimate fea is just hilarious. Notice on the morning rehash, Omar doesn’t ask if Conceptos is safe. Instead he wants all the gory details – what was it like, kissing a fea? Did she try to jump his bones? He’s enjoying this way too much. The problem is, Televisa makes important plot points screamingly obvious. And there is no concrete evidence that this is Omar’s motive.

So I’m not strongly convinced of either reason. The most likely reason?
Explanation 3. Plot expediency. Fernando needs to resist the seduction plot, and resist hard, because he’s the hero and deep down he’s a good person. So there needs to be someone pushing the seduction plot even harder than Fernando is resisting it.

Thank you, Marta. Hmm. So you're saying that what Lety overheard influenced her behavior. That has interesting ramifications.

In the omar thing I am leaning toward explanation no. 2 just because Omar has no clue what it is like to care for someone else... all he sees is that Fernando is his 'games partner/female hopping buddy' and that if he, Omar, could never seriously even contemplate the idea of seducing or kissing someone like Lety, pushing Fernando seems the most fun thing to do and must be absolutely thrilling to actually get Fernando to do it (remember Fernando keeps forcing Omar to play the same game with Alicia... so this is also, at least in part, a payback)... yes, there are many secondary reasons, like Omar himself is a minority stockowner in the company they are trying to 'protect', and Omar could not even fathom the idea of Tomas (and they have not even seen what Tomas looks like) compete with Fernando for someone like Lety... but those are just as much 'excuses' he uses to keep pushing Fernando...
Remember Omar is NOT Fernando Mendiola, there is no shadow at all that he could have even a rare moment of 'humanity', other than, to my knowledge, the time when Lety gave Fernando the business plan and Omar was the one that noticed Lety was limping and had her glasses broken.
So I vote for explanation no. 2 as the main one.

and yes, I am saying that moment was a key fork in the road moment for Lety. She had made up her mind to act like nothing happened last night... but with the mocking she got from Alicia and Marcia, now her own inner pride has been challenged and her inner self is screaming for some kind of 'you just wait and see' action on her part. She already has the quiet rebuttal in her sleeve to every time Marcia mocks Lety saying she is NOT an owner or decision maker at Conceptos, that she is just an EMPLOYEE... now if Fernando shows any interest in continuing any kind of relationship, then the romance side of the same double standard would be crushed unbeknownst to Marcia and Alicia.

back to the omar thing... your reasons to not like explanation no. 1 are some of my main reasons I like explanation no. 2
B. He appears fearful for Conceptos ONLY when he’s pushing Fernando because he knows the presidency is Fern’s Achilles heel. He can push that button and manipulate Fern however he wants.
He has known Fernando for years and knows that Fernando would not go for the seduction plot on Lety unless Omar keeps reminding Fernando of what is at stake... BECAUSE Tomas would never be interested in Lety romantically, the ONLY REASON Omar can see feasible is to eventually take Conceptos from them...
C. But when he’s not manipulating Fern, he doesn’t seem afraid for Conceptos. Rather he seems gleeful about the plot itself.
Exactly, the whole plot, finding the right strings to pull to get Fernando to follow through with every detail and enjoying Fernando's storytelling of his awful experiences only enhances Omar's interest in reminding Fernando of what is at stake and pushing Fernando to continue with the 'game'.

I think the Omar Fern dynamic is interesting. Both of them are reflections of their class and age. Skirt chasers without much real concern for the feelings of others. I see Fern as more of a passive personality who goes with the flow hence his engagement to Marcia and his somewhat reluctant agreement to go with the seduce Letty plan. Omar on the other hand is more pragmatic. He is like all those people who say it is just business baby. He sees that using Letty is to keep the business is just practical with no thought about her feelings. Both men have mucho growing to do although Fern is slightly ahead when he admits to himself that what is he is doing isn't right. I did however want to reach through the set and smack him one when he wiped off his mouth. He is going to have to pay for that insult.

I also like your third theory, but I think Omar is the perfect person to 'pull Fernando's strings' from the 'evil shoulder' side... and Omar even thinks all this is FUN!!
You are absolutely right, Fernando would never have gone through with even conceiving this 'plan' if Omar did not keep digging into him the shadow of doubt that Lety would give in to temptation and even more easily if she had her own 'evil shoulder' coach, someone she would do ANYTHING for if she really loved him, namely Tomas, pushing her to keep the company to herself.

Marta, thank you for the fuller explanation of the impact of Marcia's overheard comment. I'm putting that into my files. Marcia has abused Lety from the beginning, and Lety had no defense except Fernando's. Then she got the company, and Marcia's claims of power turned into a joke. If Lety wins Fernando, then Marcia's boasts on that side will be disarmed as well. Lety will have captured all Marcia's arsenal, and the only thing she'll have left is making loud noises. Lety's not the vindictive type, but what a relieve to turn her enemy's swords into nerf balls! Very interesting point.

And regarding Omar, your conclusion is that protecting Conceptos is only the excuse he uses with Fernando. A very effective pretext because Fern will do ANYTHING to hold the presidency, even bankrupt the company. Omar's REAL motivation is sport. Okay, you've sold me. I finally have an Omar explanation that rings true. Now I'll have to watch future scenes with that in mind, and see if it holds up.

Pardon me for rephrasing what you just said. It helps me process it an comprehend it better.

Paula, yes, you got it. I vote that Omar's main motivator is the 'game'/fun factor. His weapon to motivate Fernando is Fer's fear of losing the company/presidency. Just like Lety is a marionette in the hands of Fernando and the strings are her feelings for him, Fernando is a marionette in Omar's hands, held on by Fernando's fear of losing the company and his presidency, which overpowers Fernando's feelings of guilt(guilt is the one feeling already acknowledged, we all know there are other feelings he can't recognize - his humanity - or even comprehend yet ... )... at least for now.
