La Fea Más Bella #147-148 12/29/10 Barter balance por boda.

Capitulo 147.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando begs Lety to go with him so they can be alone together. He wants to show her how much he loves her. I think he demonstrated that pretty well inside the restaurant. He says he’s dying to spend the night with her, and he desires her more than ever.

2. She waivers for a moment, then she remembers the letter, “Make love to Lety so I don’t lose Conceptos.” She says, “Well I don’t desire you,” pushes him away, and escapes in the taxi. Left in her dust, Fernando says, “Can’t you see that my love is true? Why are you doing this to me?”

3. Fernando remembers PG’s words. He has to choose between love and the company. He remembers his father entrusting him with the presidency, and Lety rejecting him. He concludes that Conceptos must be the most important. And forges yet another anvil.

4. Tom eats a tableful of food. He and Ali probe each other’s situation. Ali wants to know if he’d loan her his car like he does for Lety, and buy her expensive gifts. She laments the loss of her car and starts working him for a solution.

5. Julieta says she shares Lety’s burden, even if Lety won’t talk about it. Lety tells her diary that even though Fernando destroyed her, she loves him and she loses all her resolve when he touches her. She can’t let love overrule her dignity since he finds her revolting. He’s suffering for his company as much as she’s suffering for his deception. She needs to keep him at a distance because she doesn’t have the strength to resist him.

6. Ali invites Tom up to her apartment but quickly rescinds the offer.

7. Pop harangues about the fancy car and he thinks Lety is getting too big for her britches (I think Lety’s britches are too small). He dictates, “Neither you nor this house will ever change.” She answers, “Don’t worry, nothing will ever change in this house.”

8. Julieta tells Pop that Lety isn’t a little girl and she wants a husband and her own family. He needs to give her space to take risks, make mistakes, and learn. Their job is to be there when she needs them.

Capitulo 148.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando sleeps in his thinking chair, and in the morning he writes today’s card. He says he doesn’t know why she hates him, but he was glad to awaken today with the scent of her kiss on his mouth.

2. Monica reports to Marcia that Lety was very affectionate with Fernando at Meson. Marcia tells Ali that Fern wasn’t out with his amante last night; he was with Lety at Meson. Ali says that Tom was pure naco last night. They agree that he must be a weirdo; nobody they know would even consider dating Lety. Marcia doesn’t want Ali to go out with Tom.

3. Fernando and Omar debrief. Fern says that Lety called Tom from his cell, she wanted to kiss him in front of everyone, and she refused to spend the night with him.

4. Lety reads the card and Fern asks if last night’s kiss means they’ll be together like before. He wants an answer before she answers her ringing phone. She says yes, and picks up Humberto’s call. Fernando kisses her twice before taking the call.

5. Fernando begs Lety for the balance. His life depends on it, but that doesn’t move her. Instead she asks if he is going to cancel the wedding like he promised, so he promises that he will cancel it. So will she doctor the balance? Alone at his desk, Fernando says, “I would very much like to keep my promise, Lety. You don’t know how much I would like to.”

Paula and all thanks for the wonderful comments and insights to this very bumpy ride in this part of LFMB.
I am beginning to think that all the goo that Fern puts in his hair is clouding his vision. I cannot believe he actually did not see Lety's look when he asked her to doctor the balance and he would cancel the wedding and that she does not believe him anymore. He is a great liar but even the best liars know when their lies are not believed anymore. They just hope they do not get called on them.
And seriously Marcia gets a diamond ring and all Lety gets are cards and drugstore stuffed animals? If I were Lety that alone would make want to call the whole thing off. I think Lety deserves a nice thoughtful gift for once. Enough with the stuffed animals!
I also noticed that since reading the letter Lety has been using pencil to write in her journal. May be she wants this part of her life erased at some point. Perhaps the theme song here "Love Hurts" the Nazareth version (I love the guitar solo!).

What’s the significance of the fire behind Fernando? Is this the beginning of the purging and refining process? But sitting there, he chooses Conceptos over Lety, so that doesn’t work. Is the fire a symbol that he’s destroying himself by his wrong choice? PG said that if he chooses the company he is lost.

Did you hear what Robopop told Lety? “Don’t forget, el diablo es puerco (the devil’s a pig)!” Lety looks at him like he’s a stranger, a foreigner. More specifically, as if he’s Hermes Pinzón of Colombia, father of another fea, since that was Hermes’ favorite line.

When Omar reads the card Fernando wrote, he ridicules the spelling. Actually, Camil is the only Mexican I’ve seen who spells well (other than journalists). Alejandro Fernandez practically can’t spell “a.”

Fern asks for the balance, so she asks if he’s really going to cancel the wedding. He realizes that she’s naming her price for the balance, so he promises that he will cancel it, even though he knows he won’t.

Two interesting posts on the 2006 recap. I always thought of Fernando loving Conceptos/the presidency more than he loves Lety. But anon. suggested that he’s choosing obligation over love. And Julie pointed out the continuum of changeability on the male and female sides. Fernando and Lety are changing and we know they’ll change much more. Omar and Alicia are shallow and self absorbed but they have a potential for change because they are not fundamentally evil. OTOH Ariel and Jazmín are evil and will never change.

I just found another song for this stage. The Motown hit, Sweet Talkin' Guy. (snip)

Sweet talking guy, talking sweet kinda lies
Don't you believe in him, if you do he'll make you cry
He'll send you flowers and paint the town with another guy (???)

Sweeter than sugar, kisses like wine (oh he's so fine)
Don't let him under your skin, cause you'll never win (no you'll never win)
Don't give him love today, tomorrow he's on his way
He's a sweet talkin' guy (sweet talkin' guy)
But he's my kind of guy (sweet talkin' guy)

Why do I love him like I do?

paula, the thought process of Fernando right about now reminds me of a song we already identified, 'Ahora quien' sung by Marc Anthony... esp the chorus...

A quien van a engañar ahora tus brazos
A quien van a mentirle ahora tus labios
A quien vas a decirle ahora "te amo"

Ahora quien?

Ahora quien si no soy yo

It's really hard to care about anyone at this point. Lety is so holier than thou with her thinking about what a liar Fern is yet she continually lies to every one. There is not a single person she didn't lie to in the last few days alone. She has now added being a thief to her list of illegal actions by using FI funds to fete the witches. It is hard to feel sorry for someone who is holding a constant pity party for herself, rereading and fixating on a letter when, if she had any guts, she would just call Fern on it. Instead she pretends nothing is wrong and leads him on acting like everything is fine. Her obsession is getting a little old and sick. He and Omar may have may a stupid move to save Conceptos but no one ever forced her to sleep with a man committed to someone else. I sometimes wonder if her anger is less about being used than in her own guilt in doing something she was raised to believe was wrong.

Fern at this point is a total idiot. He is legitimately trying to find out what is wrong and typically is doing it all wrong. It is as if his pet poodle has turned into a pit bull and he doesn't know why. Now he once again places his family obligations over his love, making a promise he knows he can not keep. He is torn between love and loyalty but unlike Lety is truly in love and his statement that he loves her with all his heart is much more accurate then hers.

Omar and Alicia aren't as shallow as they may seem. Omar in particular pays a heavy price for his loyalty to Fern and Alicia is hiding some painful things.

Ha, Paula, I did remember enough about #147 to know that Fernando wasn't going to promise to admit the truth and set everything right! But I couldn't remember if there was anything in his behavior to suggest that he was thinking about coming clean with her before getting interrupted by a phone call, or what.

But no, he was just thinking of his own happiness again, and The Letter was still playing on a loop in Lety's head.

Inside Mesón Fern was horrible to Lety. Outside he was desperate to be alone with her, but she rejected him. Had he demonstrated love instead of shame inside the restaurant, he probably could have won her that night.

Fernando asks how Lety can’t see how much he loves her. I ask, “Fernando, can’t you see how LITTLE you love her?” Let me count the ways. The ones that Lety is aware of, I've marked with an asterisk.
1. He promises to break the engagement, but he breaks that promise in favor of the company.*
2. He denies that he loves her to Omar.*
3. When Lety creams Ariel about the car, Fern remembers PG's words, choose love or company. He answers himself, No, I won't let Ariel win.
4. When he considers that she might have found letter, he never considers how that would've hurt her, only that she’d yell at him.
5. At the Yuri event, he flirted with the models and allowed Lety to be humiliated.*
6. *He continues to let Omar think the issue is the balance and company; he says NOTHING about the personal side.
7. All his rude and heartless behavior at Meson.*
8. Again at the fireplace, he chooses Conceptos over Lety.
9. He allows his fear for the balance to blend in with his worries and his pleas to her.*
10. Her salary is a pittance.* Marcia says he pays her like an enemy. He promised her a car and never delivered.* He never even provided her a cell phone, a necessity for his assistant.* In fact he never gave her ANY gift except a bear sketch and a single rose.* He tried to give her car and raise and allowance, but that was only because he wanted something from her.*
11. He tells Lety he’ll cancel the wedding to convince her to doctor the balance, but when she’s out of earshot he says he wishes he could keep that promise (but he can’t).*

In the cave, Fern wants Lety to ignore the ringing phone and answer him because her answer is more important than any phone call. Too bad he didn’t feel that way last night in a similar situation, when his phone rang as he was about to kiss her in Meson. Note, however, that he kisses Lety twice before taking Humberto’s call. Slight shift in priorities?

I'm catching some episodes on tv and YouTube. Epis 145 and 146 were so intense. Today there was a lot of Cuartel and Tom/Alicia, not so exciting. I'm lurking and enjoying the recaps and comments.

Previews for tomorrow's cap shows Marcia walking in on Fern & Lety kissing. Gosh, I hope this isn't another dream sequence!! It will effectively enable Fern to disentangle himself from Marcia because it will be Marcia who will cancel everything! Yaaaa, I am seriously keeping my fingers crossed.
I also noticed the wheels turning in Alicia's head when Marcia mentioned Lety was affectionate with Fern at the restaurant.
Can't wait for tomorrow. But dang it, no LFMB on Friday! Another 3 days without.... Yikes.

Significance of the fire behind Fernando? Hmm... would that be the fire from his LIAR LIAR pants on fire?

No, probably not.

Fire is also a source of illumination - literally, and maybe figuratively as well. He has turned his back on some resources that could "shed some light" on his problem. For example, he selectively remembers PG saying he has to choose between Lety and Conceptos, but conveniently forgets that PG also said that if he chooses the company, he's lost. (And a much earlier resource - his father's advice at the very beginning, to operate the business in a clean and honest way. It's too late to undo the damage already done, but it's not too late to stop making things worse.)

I am with you at this stage, deciegirl... Lety is just acting on her anger/pain... to drowned in her own sorrow to listen to people around her telling her to confront the man and give him a chance to explain...
Fernando... well, he is a lost puppy at this point... even hearing the guy say 'choose... love or the company' and he says to himself he loves Lety but when the going gets tough he chickens out and keeps chosing the company adn his ego over letting Ariel take over. This is in part due to Fernando not having any prior experience seeing himself in such a vulnerable situation and having so many folks around him with such expectations of him. At the lack of 'hard decisions' experience, he panics. Again, he is acting on other's expectations (too many little folks on the evil side shoulder) rather than on his own feelings and his own wishes. Since he can't recognize or read the current Lety, he chooses the path with the most known and less unknown consequences... the company. Like I said before, if Lety was acting more like the Lety of the 2nd night and earlier, he would probably choose her and the story at the Meson would be different.

Hi Paula, Some great comments today. Thanks again for posting this site and forwarding us to the orignal recaps.

The scene outside the restauraunt is a hard one to watch. I always felt a little sad when Lety writes in her diary about Fernando wanting to shower to get her presence off his skin and we see him the next morning savoring the memory of her kiss.

Julie - I must say, I've never before seen the "liar, liar, pants on fire" literary device.

Marta, so nice to see you on the board again, these last few days. I agree with most of your points. But I just can't avoid the fact that when Fernando and Lety's relationship was at their most sublime, in the glow after Cuernavaca, is when Fernando decided to break his promise and NOT break his engagement. He chose the company over Lety even then. He loves Lety, but he loves the presidency more.

Notice that Fernando’s cards are getting better? He’s always had trouble expressing his feelings, but Lety’s rejection is pushing his emotions to the surface.

Another crab cannon, kinda'. Fernando is upset because Lety can't feel his weak love for her. But she has had plenty of hard evidence AGAINST it. OTOH, early on he continued the plot because he didn't believe in HER love for HIM (he thought she'd go to Tom), even though he had plenty of evidence FOR it.

Lety’s rejection is pushing his emotions to the surface. Not only his emotions, but also his frustration and lack of tooks to handle the rejection/refusal.
Your point is so true, I totally agree that Lety's rejection is based on his saying he loves her (too late IMO) and showing so much evidence AGAINST his love for her, whereas when he did not believe her she was showing so much evidence SUPPORTING her love for him. I have to say I am FF'd any scenes with everyone else lately, except scenes with Luigi in Fer's office had me watching because I could see Jaime looking at sergio and having a hard time keeping a straight face. ILety’s rejection is pushing his emotions to the surface. (in particular the scene before Germany when Luigi tells Fer about the sudden business deal for the underwear commercial... hillarious! Fer is even biting his lip)

Ahoy all, just playing catch up on last week's episodes. Ay dios mio the restaurant scene, their argument in front of the restaurant, each tormented in their complete misunderstanding of the other...it's all just too agonizing! They are so near to having the love they both want, yet their own weaknesses keep them from connecting. It's very sad.

I have another suggestion for the fire motif, it's a stretch but fun nevertheless. Fernando is a bit of a control freak. Not that he's good at being in control, but that he doesn't like to lose control. Fernando is close to a precipice (love) but he keeps sabotaging things so that he doesn't go over that precipice. As he sat next to the fire the song that came into my head is one of the steamiest love songs ever written, Ring of Fire...

Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire

Whaddya think? No? OK then, I'm going with the LIAR LIAR pants on fire symbolism then.

Paula, Alma and Julie, thanks for the superb recaps of these difficult episodes. They are a huge help.
