La Fea Más Bella #207-208 2/10/11 Where does everyone stand?

Capitulo 207.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Alicia complains about her job change.

2. Aldo talks to Fern alone. He says it’s so they can know each other better, but it’s really Aldo interrogating Fern. Aldo asks why Fern distrusts him. Does he think Aldo is a liar and uses people? Aldo suggests that maybe Fernando suspects others because he himself deceives people.

3. Aldo asks what is most important to Fern, because to him the most important is love. Fern gets serious and says that love is most important to him too. It wasn’t before, but now it is. The problem is, his love is not being returned. Aldo says he believes him, and now he knows Fern is someone worthy of respect.

4. Lety tells Lola that she has to hire Jaz in order to keep Luigi. Lety tells Jaz that she’ll be the receptionist. Jaz whines, and Lety says no one’s forcing her to take the job. Lety warns her not to cause problems with Lola. Jaz shovels a load of crap about how she’d never want to hurt anyone, and Lety just rolls her eyes. I guess Jazmín’s shtick doesn’t work on people who don’t have “posterior motives.”

5. Fernando disagrees with everything Aldo says, even when he hasn’t said it yet. Omar says he made a fool of himself. Aldo tells Luigi Fern is noble and a nice guy.

6. In Omar’s office, Fern and Omar dive for the big chair. Fern crashes to the floor and hurts his hand. They agree that Lety’s off to a good start, but Marcia doesn’t like it.

7. Saimon packs up Fern’s things from la presidencia, and Lety tells him to take the infamous trash bag too. He takes everything to Omar’s office. Marcia accuses Fern of keeping the trash bag like a treasure. Fern puts it into a trash can and asks if Marcia’s satisfied. Never! She’s decided Lety can’t be allowed to set policy without board approval. Fern suggests that if she can swallow her pride she’ll recognize that Lety’s proposal is sound.

8. Jaz tries to play Luigi against Lety, but Lety pulls her up short. Lety warns that the next time she’ll be fired.

9. Aldo tells Lety about the $2M.

Capitulo 208 & 209.
Read CHF’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it. The recap covers two episodes. The last scene of Cap 209 is when Jazmín flirts with Tom in Reception.

1. Aldo tells Lety, “Everything will go perfectly because you need me here and I need you with me.” Lety gets nervous and claustrophobic, and she disengages. He starts to seductively invite her to lunch but Tom interrupts, hollering that he’s hungry. He doesn’t like Aldo. There is lots of tension between everybody. When Aldo’s gone, Tom and Lety talk. Tom says Aldo is interested in Alicia.

2. Pop reports to MamaJ that many people at Conceptos treat Lety badly, but she’s setting them straight. MamaJ starts to tell Pop about Aldo but thinks better of it.

3. Tom tells Lety she should hook up with Aldo. Then Aldo wouldn’t pursue Ali, and Lety would be able to forget about Fernando. See the transcript.

4. Aldo tells Caro that Lety painted a seascape in her bedroom, so she must’ve missed him. But she introduced him as her close friend, almost like a brother, and that’s not what he was hoping for.

5. Fernando finds his love note napkin in his wallet, “Lety, only God knows how much I love you.”

6. Lety calls Caro and asks her to organize the food expo.

7. Tom tries to smooth things out with Alicia but she slaps him. He tries to apologize but she says she hates him and will never forgive him. When Jazmín finds out he’s a VP and he’s no longer Lety’s novio, she decides he’s the hottest man in Conceptos.

Spanish Lesson. Lety's Heart Condition.
Tom: Aldo likes you. Don’t deny it. Besides, if you go out with him, you’ll get Fernando out of your head. Because that’s not doing you any good.
L: You make it sound so easy. I still adore him.
T: One nail takes out another (un clavo saca otro clavo). It’s a law of life. Do you want to spend the rest of your life, dying for love for a traitor?
...
L: The heart doesn’t do what’s convenient. Not even for a neighbor who’s my best friend. The heart’s gonna’ love who it chooses, and that’s that.
T: Aldo’s a galán! Just a minute ago you said Alicia was right to take notice of him. I believe you do like him. Even if it’s just a little. Don’t deny it.
L: We kissed in Acapulco. Twice (she’s not counting the kiss when she fantasized Fernando).
T: There you have it. That means that you like him, too.
...
L: No, Aldo is different from anyone else I’ve met. He’s so profound. He gives me so much peace. Calm.
T: (paraphrased) Then what’s the problem now?
L: We met because I was drowning. He saved me.We became like brother and sister. He said it himself. We’ve been friends since then. Close friends.
T: And the kisses?
L: They were beautiful. The second time, I kissed him. During that time in Aca, I had decided to forget Fernando and I thought I’d never see him again, so I allowed myself a romance with Aldo.
T: Temporary/fleeting? (Pasajero?)
L: Yes. I came back to DF and saw Don Fernando again. I’m very clear that I won’t trust him ever again. He’s a traitor and I need to keep my distance. But something very strange happened. I feel like Fernando sees me with love. And the other time, when he told me he loves me..
T: You sent him to the devil?
L: Yes, but I have his image here, and when he said it to me, it confirmed to me, with the passage of time, that something is felt at this moment. Something very strong, Tom. Fern said it, as if it was from the depths of his soul.
But no, I’m only fooling myself because I want to believe that Fernando could actually be in love with me. Do you see why I can’t think (that way) about Aldo? He’s delightful. Not just because he’s so guapo, but the kind of person he is. He’s an exceptional man.
T: And Don Fernando?
L: (The idea of) Don Fernando is very strong inside me. I believe a long time will have to pass before my heart stops beating for his.

Thank you for the screenshots, Pata, especially under such short notice!

I really liked Omar today. Hes thinking straighter than Fernando and he's doing his best to have his back.

I still don't see why there is such visceral dislike of Aldo. His conversation with Fernando today seemed very perceptive and not manipulative. Of course he wasn't upfront with him. Fernando is his rival but he foud out why Fernando is throwing roadblocks in his way and once he found out how Fernando feels he respected him for his new priorities.

Alicia was once again hilarious -- but also quite touching in her confrontation with Tomás.

Güera from (sunny, snowy) Syracuse

When Aldon't was interrogating Fern over what is most important in life to him I noticed something. Fern told him Love was most important to him.......but it isn't being reciprocated. Wouldn't Aldon't at some point realize Fern is not in love with Marcia because of this comment. To all outward appearances Fern & Marcia are "back together" and Marcia obviously give off "I Love Fern" Vibes. So for Fern to tell Aldon't that HIS love is not reciprocated can only mean HIS love is not for Marcia.

On another point, the conversation between Aldon't and Lety in her office made my skin crawl. Sorry, he is gross.
(I can practically smell the stink off him through the TV). On the other hand I'm sure Fern ALWAYS smells DIVINE.

When is this Aldon't character going to stop spouting his philosophical crap? My FF button is getting worn out.

Diann

Best part of today? Surprisingly Omar and Fern. Omar is starting to be likable.

Diann

I really enjoyed Lety's triumph today with Luigi. He was all set to jump down her throat about Yasmin and Lety got the best of both of them.

Lety is smart.
Diann

Guera, you're just not seeing what the rest of us are. Aldo interrogated Fernando today. He looked like a cat playing with a mouse and waiting for the opportune time to pounce. Does Aldo love Lety? Here we go with full circle again. Aldo loves how Lety makes him feel, but as to really loving who she is? Nope, I don't think so. Lety is not some philosophical spout of words like Aldo portrays himself to be. Yes, when Lety was drowning, he helped her to survive. But and it's a big but, Aldo doesn't know how to fully give of himself to another so the depth and quality of his "love" is highly questionable. Aldo has schmoozed with every person who he thinks can give him an advantage with Lety. Fernando is just himself. He has now realized a soul-shaking love for Lety no matter whether she returns it or not. He still wants to love her. Before he loved Lety for how she made him feel and what she did for him. Once again, full circle with Fernando and Aldo changing places.

Fernando took huge steps today by not smacking the smirky smile off of Aldo's face. I would've told him to shove it and that what I considered most important in life was not any of his business. Fernando was the bigger person today and continues to make strides. He just needs to dump Marcia permanently. Fernando may not be having sex with her but he is sleeping with Marcia and that's a no no.

Did I miss it? Has Fernando seen Aldo and Lety together? As far as I remember he hasn't and but believes there is something going on there. there was when he was eavsdropping but did he actually see them together?
Jenn

Barbara, I don't think there's enough evidence yet to completely condemn Aldo "beyond a shadow of a doubt." There are some things that are disturbing, and there are things that might raise some suspicions, but not enough to PROVE anything against Aldo. If Guera requires stronger evidence against him, I can't fault her for that. In fact, think back. Back when Fern thought Tom was trying to win Lety to steal his company, Fern had much more "evidence" against Tom than we have against Aldo, and he was wrong. What we've seen of Aldo so far is ambiguous enough, that a reasonable person could could end up for or against him.

Okay Paula, you're being the voice of reason. But, I've seen slick before in real life and those men or women can convince an Eskimo to buy ice from them. I wouldn't trust Aldo because I don't think he really loves Lety and has her best interests at heart. Compare him to Fernando. He won't give up on Lety even though he knows she still is in love with Fernando. On the other hand, Fernando will let Lety go in order for her to be happy. Which man is the bigger person, I ask?

I remember that when I was watching these episodes originally, I grudgingly felt that Aldo came out looking a lot better than Fernando just because Fernando came off as cranky toddler.

Of course, Aldo had the advantage in all of their interactions, and I think Fern sensed that their relationship was out of balance. Plus, just a few weeks ago (story-time, not our time!), Fernando was running the place and had the admiration and respect of almost everyone. Now, suddenly, not only is he without his company and his girlfriend and his other girlfriend, but now there's this weird guy who seems to be winning his way into everything that Fernando has lost.

So I get why Fernando is acting that way. But, for this moment at least, Aldo really does look a lot better than Fernando.

But I agree that it was a major triumph for Fernando to keep his fists in his pockets! Alas, we seldom get any points for not-doing things that we aren't supposed to do.

Thank you Paula and Pata for the terrific recap and screen shots. I very much appreciate the translated conversation between Lety and Tomas. She was truly eloquent as she described her continued love for Fernando. When she told Tomas that she considered Aldo like a brother I felt kind of bad for Aldo. That description is usually the kiss of death for any romance. Still, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who gives up easily so I expect we'll see quite a bit more pressure from him in the near future.

I think we might have had a milestone in today's episode. After Alicia slapped Tomas they had an actual conversation that did not involve play-acting on either part. She was her usual sniveling self, but I think for the first time she actually looked him in the eyes and heard what he said. (Not believed, but heard.)

I liked the touch of Fernando pulling Lety's old love not out of his wallet. It was just a small scene but it said a lot.

**re-posted with edits**
I really loved the way Lety is managing the situation at Conceptos as presidencia. I think she's been quite fair and mature with everyone. Maybe it's the influence of Aldo...

I agree that I still need more evidence Paula to see Aldo as having any real ill will towards Fern other than getting more information about what motivates his primary rival for Lety's affections. Maybe it will come, but I have yet to see him doing anything other than taking the bull by the horns and addressing Fern's seemingly irrational (read jealous) behavior in their meeting.

I really appreciated the scenes where Aldo was asking Fern if he had a problem with him. He grabbed the bull by the horns and honestly I respected him for putting it out on the table like an adult instead of letting the snipping from Fern go on. He's more mature in his actions imho and it shows when you see him compared to Fern.

On the other hand- I liked Fern's honesty in responding to Aldo as well. I guess he was able to tell the truth, because he really has no idea what Aldo knows about his relationship with Lety. he doesn't know how close Aldo and Lety are, doesn't know how long they've known each other or really what they could mean to each other, so Fern's vulnerability in those moments was a nice touch. Nice range from jaime camil although I still love him best when he's being funny!

In response to Diann- I don't think it's obvious that Marcia gives off "love" vibes to Fern at all. She acts like a jealous 'lover', but I don't see any "real" love in the behavior she exhibits towards Fern. If that's love (constantly yelling at him, glaring at him, checking up on him), then I don't want that kind.

At first when I was looking at the captions I thought Fern was saying that Aldo didn't like him, but based on the translations here - he was saying I don't like Aldo. I like that he recognizes that Aldo is intelligent and they have to be careful of him. Is that a foreshadow? What do they have to be careful of - was he talking biz here or Lety?

Funniest moment of the day for me - when Fern sort of hugs the IT guy and smacked him on the butt. What was that interaction about? It was HILARIOUS and I loved it. I love playful, funny Fern.

Now back to the heavy stuff - the scenes with Lety and Tomas discussing her feelings were so sad. I feel badly for Lety, she's in this dire situation with the business that she helped create with the man she loves and can't admit to loving...the pressure to succeed, combined with unrequited love (or at least she thinks it might be unrequited) ahh - it must be hell for her!

I thought she actually looked very nice today when she was in her "happy moments" and there was a really nice moment of chemistry right before Aldo tried to kiss her & tomas burst in on them.

I also noticed the way that Lety and Tomas interacted within the space of her office. At first he tries to sit on behind her desk, she tells him to get up, then they both sit on top of the desk like kids at a camp fire. A much different use of the office today...

Fern and Omar were the proud papa's today. their girl Lety is growing up...it's interesting to contrast the earlier eps (I'm watching them now, with today). One thought I had was how all the women (or at least in the cuartel) responded favorably to Lety while all of the men even Saimon and Celso tortured her through the first eps...I'm still at the point where Celso still harasses her every single time she enters the building. It's an interesting contrast to the fact that all the men hate Aldo too. Not sure if there's anything there, but it's just something I've noticed watching the earlier eps...

Jenn, Fernando has not seen Lety and Aldo together, BUT he has heard three things:
1. The cuartel calling Aldo a papito.
2. Lety giggling with him, behind closed doors.
3. Aldo telling Luigi about an enchanting woman.

GP, Lety learned how to manage the difficult people of Conceptos back when she didn't have any power. I remember the time Luigi refused to attend Fernando's meeting, so Lety told him, "No problem, we'll just decide on your budget without you." Of course he came running. Now she has power, but she still manages them with the same finesse instead of with a big stick. That's why I was so irked yesterday when she told Aldo she couldn't have gotten through the meeting without his strength.

On a related note, the thing that bugged me about Aldo today was when he told Lety, "You need me here and I need you with me.” Remember Fern's face when Lety was named president? He was proud because he knew she'd do a great job. OTOH Aldo thinks she's not strong enough without his help.

Paula - I think Aldo is just repeating what Lety said to him back to her (she admitted yesterday that she needed him to be there). So far he's sort of like a reflection...but if you think about it - she truly does need him. Without his project Conceptos doesn't really have a hope of coming up with the money to re-pay the loans in 3 months time.

Good points about Lety's management style...you always learn the most about power & managing up when you have none.

GP, "she admitted yesterday that she needed him to be there."

Yeah, that's true. I was hoping you wouldn't remember that part! (jiji)

Lety stated she needed Aldo there because she doesn't understand yet that she is a strong woman. And Aldo won't let her understand because it would diminish his role in her life. Therefore, unlike Fernando, he doesn't encourage her to stand on her own and make rightful decisions. My evidence: how proud Fernando was with Lety becoming president and how Aldo reminds Lety that she can't do without him. 'Nuf said. Love the fact that Tomas is Lety's friend through thick and thin. Also love the fact that this time around the men are more discerning than the women. It's the women who are thinking with their hormones each time they see Aldo. Good gravy, are the ladies that hard up for a good looking man?

LOL - they are def hard up. I still think my argument holds that technically Lety and all of Conceptos needs Aldo and his project at this point. Without him/the project the company is DOA. :)

But I'm keeping my eyes open for the signs that he is not being genuine with Lety. His past behavior has been to tell her that she's strong, that she can recover, that she's a good person - so this one comment doesn't change my opinion of Aldo just yet. He's done nothing as horrible as Fern (yet). :)

PS - Paula - I remember only because you pointed it out - I think I probably would have missed it in the dialogue otherwise yesterday I was distracted again...

Yes Conceptos needs the project; Lety doesn't need Aldo to make smart decisions. He pontificates philosophical dribble and yet has faced his own demons in his life. Aldo is one of those people that's great at giving advice but piss poor at giving himself or actually the deepest part of who he is. Full circle again. Fernando used to not be able to do that himself, but he took the bull by the horns and told Lety he loved her with a soul-shattering soul.

I don't think Aldo is evil; I just think he is slick and that he has bought into his own press. He's been good for Lety, but she doesn't need him in order to be who she is supposed to be. For him or her to think that is to think unwisely.

Barbara - It doesn't sound like Aldo is saying to Lety that he's going to help her to make smart decisions - I sort of see it as him saying they need each other, they are a support for each other. Their fates are intertwined...I think it's very closely tied to this project, but it also has an emotional meaning for Aldo as well - he needs her (in his life, he thinks he loves her). He's sort of saying the same thing to her (or at least he hopes it's what she meant yesterday). That's sort of what I picked up from his body language. I don't think he was trying to question her strength as a boss - I think he was trying to use a line to get her to claim him as more than just a brother. That's my interpretation and I'm sticking to it...

Thank you everyone for your comments and insight! Jasmine really gets on my last nerve and I can foresee her stirring the pot quite a bit. I hope Tomey doesn't get entrapped in her snare.
Omar y Nando are just hysterical together--and the desk diving was fun to watch. I must admit I have to giggle when I see Omar, as I saw loads of photos of him--and one was desnudo. (blushes)
Lety y Tomas have such a close relationship and he is so good for her as a sounding board.
I must admit I am acting like a kid, and am stoked because
Angelica Vale added me as a friend on FB! I wrote to her about my chihuahua and that my sis also lives in FL (where 'Lety' lives with her man and perrito.
And. as for Aldo--I have no problem with him. He is support for Lety, and is bringing business/dinero into Conceptos.

GP, you made me think of something. Remember before the false romance started, Lety wrote in her diary, "I'm the most important woman in his life, but he doesn't even see me as a woman. He needs me for his company, and I need him for love." Now, Lety thinks she needs Aldo for support, and Aldo needs Lety for love.

I've noticed something about our discussion. With the addition of Aldo, not only have we had more to say, and not only do our posts dig deeper, but also we are much more interactive. In the past, most of the posts stood alone. Each one would post independently, or maybe someone would add to or ricochet off someone else's post.

But now we're carrying on something much closer to real conversation. There's a real back-and-forth going on. And the icing on the cake is that we all respect the validity of another's opinion, even if we hold a vastly different opinion.

I LOVE THIS BOARD!!!

I agree - you ladies keep me on my toes. I try really hard to pay attention to all of the details when I'm watching because I know that you'll have good insights here! It really enhances my viewing experience. I really love the dialogue here. Thank you guys for being so AWESOME! So glad I found this board, plus I think my comprehension is improving each day.

Paula - another full circle situation - lety needs Aldo for the biz, he needs her for love (his heart). I think it's a good point. I don't think I've gotten to that point in my catch-up viewing yet I'm on cap 25.

PS - Marie that's cool that Angelica added you as her FB friend.

In watching the scene with Aldo and Fern today I kept thinking there should have been a fire hydrant in the office. Although only Aldo really knows it they were like two dogs getting ready to mark their territory. Someone pointed it out yesterday that Aldo is,like Humberto, a super salesman. He puts on the appropriate face for who ever he is talking to. It serves his purpose to treat Fern with some respect because he doesn't want Lety to think he would bad mouth anyone. Caro has warned him over and over again that Lety is not for him but he chooses to ignore it.

I am rather surprised that Julieta jumped on the Dr. Phil bandwagon so fast. You'd think she would want Lety to take more time to heal before leaping into new relationship. She is practically getting ready to draw up a list of the guests for the boda.

Strange that Lety didn't think it odd that Fern had the bag of recuerdos and how did it get into his office in the first place. Marcia was the last one who had it and it was in her office. She would never have given it to him since she let him think that Lety had showed all the stuff to her.

GP, you said you just watched Cap 25. Cap 26 is in my Top 10! The bribe hits the fan, Fern's "The Lety I Know" speech.. and then in Cap 27, the matter of the Bat Cave. It's a golden age for them!

There are two songs I forgot to post. The first one is for when Fernando went to Santuario to plead with Lety and she rejected him cold.

I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor [snip]
Well now go, walk out the door.
Just turn around now, ‘cuz you’re not welcome anymore.

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart.
And trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart.
And I spent oh so many nights just feeling sorry for myself.
I used to cry, but now I hold my head up high.

And you see me, somebody new.
I’m not that chained up little person still in love with you.
And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free.
Now I’m saving all my loving for someone who’s loving me.
------------------------------
The other one is almost a contradiction. It's for today's show when Lety told Tom her heart condition.

Here I am (Just when I thought..), Air Supply.
[snip]
Holding you, a feeling I never outgrew.
Though each and every part of me has tried,
Only you can fill that space inside.
So there’s no sense pretending. My heart, it’s not mending.

Just when I thought I was over you,
Just when I thought I could stand on my own,
Oh baby, those memories come crashing through
And I just can’t go on without you

BarbaraM,
You are my new Best Friend!!
I totally agree with your stance on Aldo. You are hitting the points I have also thought.
We will staunchly stand together on this, we will be victorious! Then we can tell GeorgiaPeach--->Told you so!!!
(I am saying all this playfully, please don't think I am angry at anyone!!!)

On to the next Capitulos!!!!

Diann

Diann, thanks. I think what I see with Aldo, and it could be the writers doing this, is that he doesn't have much substance. He's full of platitudes and a glib tongue but not much else other than a gorgeous smile. He knows how to make people feel important but never reveals much of himself. Aldo flirts wherever he needs to reach his goal. It really is full-circle because that's how Fernando was in the beginning. Now Fernando is becoming the man he's supposed to be and Aldo is remaining a one-dimensional person. Unlike Fernando and Omar who are complex personalities.

I don't think Aldo is mean; he's just slick in his approaches. He's even maintaining a relationship with Caro just to stay close to Lety. Aldo will do whatever he has to do to anyone at anytime in order to keep Lety in his life. Hey, there are a lot of people walking around the world today who are just like that.

LOL @ Diann - I love a good challenge! I agree with Barbara that the writers have made Aldo a bit flat... :) I think that because of that and the fact that this arc with this character is an addition from the original versions we're left up to our own devices to interpret his words and actions in the show. Depending on our backgrounds and unique experiences we choose to see him in whatever light makes sense for us. I get it! Barbara - I think Aldo would remain friends with Caro anyway now that Lety has helped him to reconnect with life. That's just the way I see it - he's sort of waking up from a long hibernation so now he's starting to do all of the things he wasn't able to do during his grieving period (opening the restaurant, doing this deal with Conceptos, loving another woman, re-connecting with old friends).

Love the song choices Paula H. quite appropriate!

Great song choices Paula. I haven't thought of Here I Am by Air Supply in years but I can't imagine a more perfect song for Lety's heart condition.

Marie, congrats on FBing with Angelica Vale. I love hearing stuff like that because it reminds us that our favorite stars are also real people.

Deciegirl, I am choosing to believe that Julieta's instant, enthusiastic acceptance of Aldo is simply her way of showing Lety some support instead of giving her more grief. She's only read the diary a day or two ago, so right now she's mentally comparing Aldo to an engaged man who seduced her daughter under false pretenses and asked her to do something dishonest. It's got to be refreshing for her to see Lety with a man who seems completely different from the one who just stomped on her heart.

As quickly as Julieta (and everyone else) was charmed by Aldon't, she can surely fall out of love with him just as fast if anything happens to change her mind.

And I have to agree with Paula that in retrospect, while Aldo's stint on this show was not my favorite thing of all time, he certainly got people talking.
