La Fea Más Bella #215-216 2/16/11 A Proposal Not Made, A Visit Not Dreamt, A Pearl Not Given
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.
1. Aldo takes Alicia to a Mexican restaurant – que horror! He dodges her questions about his work, and finally she asks, “How much money do you expect to earn?” Then she asks him to loan her 500K pesos. Aldo counsels against materialism.
2. At the apartment, Fernando makes small talk, asking Marcia what’s up between Alicia and Aldo. Marcia suggests that he wants them together so Aldo will leave Lety alone. Fern gets mad – her obsession with Lety poisons everything. He tries to have a civil conversation and she has to start on him again. He leaves the table.
3. Lety tells MamaJ that her story has become the office gossip, and Lety feels bad for Marcia. Mama suggests that Lety invite Aldo for breakfast. Mama says it sounds like Aldo is more than a friend. Lety says she can’t get Fernando out of her head.
4. Tom spies on Ali and Aldo at the restaurant. She reads Aldo’s palm and says he was reincarnated from his own father. And he has big hands. (That’s true; they’re unusually broad. When his hand is on Lety’s face, it looks like a ping-pong paddle!) Aldo spews his deep thoughts to Alicia. She has no idea what he’s talking about, so she assumes he must be proposing, and she accepts.
5. Marcia invites Fern to come to bed with her. He says he needs to take a walk.
6. Sanchez wants to take Sara out for drinks. She insists that the cuartel come along as chaparones. It’s probably the stupidest filler of the series.
Capitulo 216.
Read k-Fuego’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.
1. Fernando pulls up in front of Lety’s house and starts singing, “I have often walked down this street before..” Psychic Guy prays that Fernando and Lety can meet without hatred so they can forgive. Lety suddenly feels like Fernando is close. Personally I think his song wakened her. He says to himself, “If only you believed me. If you knew what I really feel for you.” She steps to the window and is startled to see him on the street. When she looks again he’s not there, and she wonders if she only dreamt it.
2. Finally the endless day, the 15 episode day, is finished. Morning dawns rainy in the DF.
3. Aldo looks at the pearl he’s going to give Lety when he tells her he loves her. He remembers when he kissed her in the ocean. But Lety’s too upset to listen. She tells him about Fernando outside her window last night. Aldo mutters, “Once again it’s Fernando.” He knows that it’s not the right time, but he drops the pearl as he reaches into his pocket.
4. Lety wants to get Fern out of her heart and asks Aldo how. Accept that Fern keeps hurting her, stop thinking about him, and realize he’s not like she thinks he is. Lety agrees and thanks Aldo for his compassion. He says, “Do you think I’m only doing this for compassion?” He reaches for the pearl, and it’s gone. He panics because that was the symbol of his love.
5. Fern goes to Lety’s office early and sits in her chair to feel close to her. He writes his initials in her sandbox and mocks the painting; he says it doesn’t belong there. He left Marcia’s before she woke up because he can’t stand being with her. Fern turns the shell painting upside-down before he leaves.
6. Erasmo is grumbly about Aldo visiting so early. Aldo tells him about the beauty of the sunrise. We see Tom’s house for the first time ever. Aldo charms Erasmo.
7. Lety arrives at work in her new car. Ali arrives in the micro.

We get a vocabulary lesson on words for pig: Cerdo and marrano. There is also chancho, cochino, puerco, porcino, gorrino, lechón (piglet), an jabalí (wild).
Alicia asks Aldo, “En que dedicas? (literally, to what are you dedicated?)” My friend tells me that in Mexico, much of the population is under-employed. It’s pretty common to have taxi drivers with engineering degrees. Therefore it’s rude to ask someone what his job is or where he works. It’s better to ask what he studied, or what Alicia asked, which roughly means, “What is your profession?” That way the person you meet can honestly answer “engineering” without mentioning that he currently drives taxi.
Fernando’s dinner spat with Marcia. I think it indicates that he’s trying to keep his promise. If Lety is a hopeless cause, he’s trying to go on with life without her, and he’s at least making an effort with Marcia, but Marcia just becomes more and more of a harpy. Part of the problem is, all that their relationship ever really had was great sex. When the sex disappeared, there was nothing left. Fern is trying, but no longer is he lying and pretending like he did up until the board meeting. So now it’s becoming painfully obvious that they have NOTHING.
That whole caurtel scene was painful to watch. And my ears are still ringing from all the screeching. The first time I watched that scene I didn't have a clue as to what was going on and thought I had missed something important. I have to admit, I still don't know what went on but now I don't care.
Thanks Paula.
Thank you for the screen shots, Pata! Good capture, Aldo losing his cooooool.
Yesterday at the end of the day, Lety’s desk was completely bare. She arrives at work the next morning and it has a blotter, agenda, pen set, pencil cup, 3-dice sculpture, binder, phone, message rack, vase of roses, and tray of sand. What’s up with that?
What on earth is the thing on the reception (Jazmín's) desk? I swear, it looks like the south end of a horse facing north!
Can't wait to see what Tomás has under the scarf & hat. I hope his "look" isn't a disaster.
Alicia was so funny as she sat there trying to figure out what Aldo was saying. I also loved her conversation with herself in the mirror -- and her vocabulary problems... "he's so meta, meta, metaphoro, metafisico" She is hilarious. And we sure needed that after those inane cuartel scenes!

Paula, I never noticed the thing on the reception desk until you mentioned it but I can't tell what it is. It almost looks like a goofy bird, or as you say a horse's a**. Also, thank you for the background on the etiquette surrounding inquiring about somebody's profession.
Julie, I tried to click through to the recipe in Amanda's recap but the link doesn't work anymore. I don't care much for pig's feet anyway. I've made a bunch of dishes that I hear about in these shows, it's been a lot of fun. Two of my favorites so far are Cochinita Pibil and Pastel Azteca. Pibil is one of my favorite preparations ever.
The screen shots are wonderful and so are the recaps. Thanks everyone for your hard work. I love the pic of Ali and Aldo and the one of Aldo losing his cool.
• Aca is water. DF is earth.
• Acapulco is a place to escape, to heal and recover. DF (Mexico City) is the real world, the everyday world.
• Aca is self gratification. DF is where you live and work.
• Aldo is of Acapulco, and Aldo is water. Don Fernando is of DF, and he is earth. Even the initials are the same!
• Aldo meets Lety in Aca and everything is perfect. They kiss twice. In DF he’s tried to kiss her and always fails.
• When Lety left Aca, Aldo missed catching her by only moments. In Aca, he couldn’t lose. As soon as she returned to DF, he started losing.
• Aldo found the pearl in the water, in Aca which is a place of water, and a pearl is a treasure of the water. Aldo tried to bring Lety that water-based symbol of his love to Lety in DF. But DF is of earth. They were in a woods which is a product of earth/ground. And he lost the pearl, not on a street or a sidewalk or a floor, but on the ground which opened and swallowed it.
Aldo, if you can’t get Lety back to Acapulco, you’re a goner!
Sylvia - Oh noes the recipe is gone!! It was still there just a few months ago, I think, because I made it sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving. I probably printed it out at some point, but there are a half-dozen places I could have filed it away... I hope I can find it.
I like your earth vs. water analogies. I hadn't thought of them before, but they all make sense.
I especially liked how you said the earth swallowed up the pearl. (The real world took over the fantasy world. Fantasy gone.)

Fernando was childish today but still so funny. The scene with the painting and then in the boardroom were hilarious. Camil's facial expressions throught the episodes today were great. Fernando parking in front of Lety's house, wanting her and needing her so much, but unable to knock on the door, was sad. Lety wanted Fernando to be outside. I think if he had not driven off she would have gone downstairs to meet him. The pull between the two is bigger than Aldo's interference. He needs to respect Lety's feelings for Fernando and give her space and time to work through her issues. Aldo wants to play fairy godmother and make Fernando disappear from Lety's life. It ain't gonna happen, Aldo; it just ain't gonna happen!
1) Tomas stalking Alicia and Aldo much like Fern stalked Lety and Tomas when they went out to dinner.
2) Alicia and Aldo taking a picture together in the restaurant with Aldo having a startled expression similar to Lety's in the pic she took with Aldo.
3)Alicia feeling a romantic relationship for Aldo when he just sees her as a potential friend (not that I get his even seeing her as a friend).
4) Alicia telling her friend (marcia) that she's in love and the friend trying to point out that they don't think the other party (Aldo in this instance) feels more than friendly affection.
I think Fern is the MOST immature character, but he's still so funny. The scene in Lety's office in the morning, then the scenes in the meeting later on...so funny, but he's such a child. He's also a bit of a stalker no? Loitering in her office, showing up outside of her window. I knew that Lety would end up thinking she dreamt seeing him last night. This show always either has someone miss seeing what's right in front of them (both literally and figuratively) or they refuse to believe seeing it.
One detail that bothered me - why was Lety able to drive her car in this morning, when last night she and Tomas had to take a taxi together? I wondered why she didn't have the car last night...did they ever explain this at all?
I was hoping for the big meeting between Aldo and Erasmo. He passed the test huh? I'm surprised I was sort of hoping for more fireworks. It was a nice gesture for Aldo to make Tomas the sandwich...
I was sort of distracted and missed a lot of the dialogue...when Aldo was at the park with Lety and even in the exchanges between Aldo, Fern and Omar this morning. Overall I'm just happy we finally made it into another day.
Can't wait to see what Tomas has done to himself - he looked pretty crazy all wrapped up.
Oh and one other thing why does Lety look so crazy when she goes for her run? Last night was the absolute worst!!
Julie- I hadn't thought of the cars equaling freedom...that's an interesting observation. I also liked that Lety points out that she bought her car on her own...maybe another signal of her internal changes (a sign of her freedom).
Barbara - I got the sense that Omar was about to say something inappropriate to the redhead...maybe that's why Aldo intercepted? I didn't get all of the dialogue, but that's sort of the impression I had from watching earlier. I agree he led Alicia on today, but that didn't really take all that much effort did it.
One question that I'd like to raise is since we're saying Aldo has led Alicia and Luigi on, does that mean Lety has led him on? She's flirted with him, leaned in a few times, kissed him...I think at least Aldo hasn't kissed anyone yet. I'm just playing a little devil's advocate...I still say Aldo hasn't done anything any worse than anyone else in this show!
Interesting thought about the car representing freedom. But for Aldo not needing a car is freedom. When Tomas showed up at the house & was put off by Aldo being there he told Lety that he couldn't go with her to pick up the car because he had some personal things to do. So she must have picked up the car this morning.
I thought that when Aldo spoke to Omar in the meeting that he was being appropriate and Omar was not since he & Fernando were being very disrespectful and childish (even if funny)

Cap 41, the post that starts "once again."
Cap 46, last post.
Also from Cap 139. Soon after Lety found the letter, she bought the luxury car.
"Now, Alicia lost her car on one day, indicating that she has no more control over her life. The very next day, Lety who has always been subservient to Fernando buys a car. And it is at the same time as she is breaking free from Fern and steering her own life. She even disobeys his direct orders. As Marta said on the BLF board, 'The moment she gets the Mercedes, he can no longer control her, read her, or even predict her behavior at all and it drives him nuts.'"
Julie, I found something as I was looking up the links for Guera. In Fea, a car in a subplot may or may not represent independence. But in EVERY example I can think of, the acquisition or loss of a car is ALWAYS related to gain or loss of independence/autonomy.
I have to give Aldo credit for one thing. Hasn't Lety said something like, "If Aldo weren't here, I'd fall back into Fernando's arms"? I think we all agree that he has to grow a lot more before he can be the man Lety deserves. And I'm not just talking about dumping Marcia. Have we seen anything that vaguely resembles sacrificial love? Has he "put legs on" his love yet? Has he done anything to make Lety's life better or happier? I'm not saying he hasn't, I just can't remember any good examples. Anyone? Back to my point. Fern needs to grow. Lety's absence pushes him to grow. Lety would make a big mistake if she returned to him now. And the strongest force keeping Lety from Fernando is Aldo.
Is Lety leading Aldo on? A case could be made. She gets all goo-goo-eyed looking at him. Several times she's said how much she needs him. She paws at him. She believes he has no romantic interest in her, but that's only because she doesn't WANT to see the truth. Yes, GP, there's plenty of sin to go around!
The whole desk decorating was a mystery. I seem to remember Lety saying something about a new computer so maybe when they got that up and running someone who actually works at Conceptos might have thought to bring
the new pres office supplies. I did think the whole zen garden odd because that is so Aldo and not anyone else.
I don't see Fern's avoiding Lety as much of a sacrifice. I think it's quite simply because he has NO RIGHT to approach her when he's involved in a relationship with Marcia. In fact - things like showing up at her house, begging to work at Conceptos to help out (but then not really doing much of anything), going into her office and messing things up (writing his initials in the sand) show me that he really isn't keeping his end of the bargain at all. He's not so subtly trying to manipulate his way back into her affections without having much right to do so. I like the Fern character, but I think he has a really long way to grow before he's ready for a relationship with Lety.
On another note - I had a thought about Aldo and his quest to tell Lety he loves her...I think that personally I felt the timing was wrong to try to make such a pronouncement when they had gone running, but any man that can propose his love to someone looking as crazy as Lety did the other day has to be in love. LOL
I also had one other thought about why Lety doesn't allow herself to believe that Aldo loves her. She's obviously gun shy, but I think it's a defense mechanism for her related to her feelings that someone as 'guapo' as Aldo could never love a fea like herself...It's still related to self esteem - she doesn't want to put herself out there like she did with Fern. She also has the uncanny habit of seeing Aldo in situations that don't always seem as they might appear (much like her nasty habit of overhearing only the bad parts of Fern's conversations).
Yes - Aldo is simply a device to move the plot along... but I think he's going to be the catalyst for a lot more growth in Lety. She still needs some TLC.
Decie- I think Aldo realizes how close Lety and Tomas are, I think that he's tried to make overtures to Tomas, but Tomas just isn't receptive because he identifies Aldo as a threat to his affections for Alicia. Look at the examples- he defended Tomas & Alicia against Ariel and even told Tomas he was proud of him for trying to go up against Ariel. He made Tomas that sandwich at breakfast...
I'd actually like to see Tomas and Aldo together in more scenes because they seem to have a good comic chemistry together.
Was it there a few weeks ago when Paula Maria was sitting there?
I don't think Lety is leading on Aldo on purpose, but I'm surprised that he hasn't noted a change in her manner between Acapulco and now. She was happy and free with him there because she was having a vacation fling. Now she's being clingy, yet guarded. How does he not see that, and why does he think that giving her either a pearl or a lecture the evils of Fernando will fix anything?
Incidentally, you don't need a pearl to tell someone you love them. The words and the sentiment are both bigger than the pearl. ALDO, THE PEARL IS "JUST AN OBJECT"!!
It's a little different if there's a really great public transportation system that offers additional options (i.e. subway), but if all you have is the bus, then a car is much more than just an object.
Rant over, gotta go. :-)
* I see Aldo as an instrument that will cause Fernando to grow.
* GP sees Aldo as an instrument that will cause Lety to grow.
* Barbara sees Aldo as an instrument that stunts Lety's growth.
Barb, you said, "he is content to be near her and help her as best he can." So far I haven't seen him doing anything to help her, business-wise. Not yet anyway.
Julie I don't think the horse's south end was there when Paula was receptionist. Maybe it's a reflection of Jazmín! "The pearl is just an object" - I love it!
About your car rant. Car rant. It's one thing to see Alicia on the microbus. But I'm trying to imagine her riding a bicycle in her typical work garb. Quite an image!
Aldo and Acapulco: By giving Lety the shell painting and wanting to give her the pearl (and did he give her the shells in her room? I forget) I think Aldo's trying to bring Acapulco to Lety (if you can't take Mohammad to the mountain..).
I'm not sure how I'd sum up how I see Aldo. He has the attention of everyone in Lety's life, which puts him in a powerful position not only with Lety, but all her peeps. How long will he have this advantage, and how (if at all) will he use or abuse it?
So I guess I still see him as a mystery at this point in our tale. A new influence within a group dynamic is bound to spur some kind of growth, but I don't feel we know enough to say whether he will gently motivate this growth with his alleged gurulike inspiration, or harshly force it if his desperation for Lety's love takes a dark turn.
