La Fea Más Bella #227-228 2/24/11 Tom's Smart Lunch, Omar's Stupid Lunch.

Capitulo 227.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.
1. Marcia chews out Fern for the photo with her cut out, and she says he’ll never grow up. Fern tells Omar to send him a picture of Lety.

2. Aldo goes to Lety’s office. She hides behind the desk and he chases her, so she hides behind the chair. He wants Julieta to teach him about mole poblano (Cd. Puebla claims to be the birthplace of mole).

3. Fern sits on a stoop and wonders what he can give Lety so she’ll see how much he loves her.

4. Fernando and Carla want the same cab. She offers to share. He puts her into the next cab. She prays that God would give her that man. Fern gushes to the cabbie about Lety in English.

5. Aldo says Fern distrusts him because he himself is untrustworthy. Omar asks Aldo to a business lunch.

6. Tom takes Marcia her tickets, etc. Marcia says it’s his fault she had friction with Lety (and who could she blame the last 11 months before Tom arrived?). Marcia charges Ali with spying on Lety while she’s gone.

7. Ali is hungry, so Tom tempts her with food. She agrees, as long as they’re not seen in public. The cuartel takes Lety to lunch and demands chisme. They want to know why Fern and Aldo fought. She says it’s because they’re both in love with her.

8. Fern’s new phone records voice so he pretends to be a radio dude. He says he met a beautiful woman and put her in another taxi. In other times, he would have not just joined her in the same taxi, but in the.. well, now he doesn’t want those complications. He prays to God to keep all the beautiful women away. He says, “I should’ve been a radio announcer.” Camil actually started in radio.

9. Omar asks Aldo to join him for a business lunch to close a contract, but there are no contracts and no clients. Aldo asks why he’s really here, just as two honies join them.

10. Carla joins the meeting, and Fern apologizes for his bad manners about the taxi. He finds out that she will be in charge of her campaign. She needles him, saying she hopes that the next time, he’ll be willing to share a taxi with her.

Capitulo 228.
Read k-Fuego’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. The cuartel doesn’t believe that neither galán is interested in Lety, nor that both are, nor that just one is. Sara, Lola, Juana, and Paula abandon the table because they think Lety is holding back. They tell Marta and Irmita to desert Lety too. Marta leaves with them.

2. At the stupid lunch, Omar picks up Aldo’s cell by mistake. Fern calls, Aldo picks up thinking it’s his phone, and Fern sputters about Omar’s mission to keep Aldo away from Lety. Aldo hangs up. The NY executives are getting impatient for Fern to return.

3. Tom and Ali share a huge lunch in his office. Ali and Luigi realize Aldo’s not interested in them. They ask who Aldo really likes, but Tom won’t tell.

4. Omar tells Aldo he needs to travel to get Sr. Lara to sign the contract.

5. Not only did we have to listen to the stupid lunch. Ten minutes later, Aldo rehashes it to Tom. Tom tells Lety of Fern and Omar’s plot to keep Aldo away. Lety informs Omar she’ll travel with Aldo. Omar tries to hustle Aldo away, then tells Lety he’s already left.

6. Carla calls upon her psychology training and asks Fern if he’s stressed because he’s afraid of something. She offers to show him NY.

7. Luigi flatters Alicia into finding out from Tom who Aldo likes.

Love the title. Stupid lunch indeed!

So far, Omar's efforts as Fernando's spy have been somewhat disappointing.

Thanks Paula. I really enjoy the episodes when Fern is in New York. I agree with Julie, great title. Omar is not the brightest person but is so funny to watch. I thought it was interesting when Lety was in his office and she was playing with Ferns model car and Omar kept taking it away from her. We had that same scene only in reverse way back when, with Omar playing with the car and Lety kept taking it away.

*An alternative title would be "Everyone's an idiot."

*What was up with the cuartel - Irma?

*Alicia for not realizing that Aldo is indeed in love with Lety.

*Omar - really?

*Erasmo for demanding coffee from Julieta & trying to keep her from taking the job cooking her fabulous Mole??

*Aldo for getting all upset with Lety for not eating his stupid apples and then getting more upset for her having a picture of Fern on her desk!

* Fern for his RIDICULOUS behavior in that meeting. Really? this used to be the president of conceptos? SMH

* Tomas for even buying lunch for Alicia.

I'm glad Alicia and Luigi FINALLY realize that Aldo doesn't like either one of them. I don't think I could have taken another hour of that one.

I'm also happy Lety decided to go on the trip just to thwart Fern and Omar's stupid plans. In fact Omar's stupidity will likely push Aldo and Lety closer together before this is all over. I had that feeling even before her talk with Tomas and I was sure of it after she told Omar she'd be going on the trip instead of him. Idiots!!

Erasmo's character really freaking annoys me. I think he's a major part of why Lety has such low self esteem. UGH that man! I know he's old school and it's probably cultural, but it still bothers me a great deal his attitudes towards Julieta and Lety.

Love the title. Tomás invitation really was smart. Feeding Alicia and getting to spend some time with her might actually pay off some day. The physical comedy between Luigi, Alicia & Tomás over the lunch was hilarious. Great timing.

Could Fernando BE more childish?? Marcia called it. And so did Aldo the other day. Aldo now knows that Fernando is in love with Lety but he sees how selfish that love is. -- fpr now at least.

I was watching Lety & Tomás today & realized that Aldo is acting towards Lety in the same way that Lety acts toward Tomás. Aldo is convinced that Fernando is bad for Lety & he tries to warn her about him. He thinks that he is better for her (and right now he is) .
Lety is convinced that Alicia is bad for Tomás and she keeps warning him bout her. She can't support his love for Alicia because she sees how Alicia has used and abused Tomás. Aldo is just acting out of his love for Lety -- in a very human way.

So ... Carla is obviously the woman that Jorge Flores warned Lety about but is she Fernando's Aldo? Her psycho babble about stress leads me to believe that she will help him to conquer fear and to find himself just as Aldo did for Lety.

Güera

Aldo is so stupid to not see Lety backing away from him all the time. Desk between them, he moves behind the desk, she moves behind the chair. I thought he might even throw the chair aside and back her up against the bookcase. How does he think he's going to force her to love him? He knows Fern really does love Lety and he is keeping that information away from her. Sneaky, manipulating scumbag.

Fernando in NYC!! So very sexy English. Loved the cabbie scene and "what to meet my girlfriend?". Nice to know in Fern's mind Lety is still his girlfriend.
Carla the predator....Ah Caray. Be strong Fernando..we are all hoping you don't go for her evil wiles.

The scene with Luigi, Alicia and Tomas was very nice. I think the three of them could actually become friends. They were cute together blabbing away. Luigi seems to have taken to Tomas as a person he can be around and talk to. Luigi needs some friend talk, he's been too one dimensional. I would love to see other sides of Luigi.

Okay, 1. would love to see more of Fern in NYC talking away in English but
2. Am afraid of Carla being around him.
Not going to enjoy this trip because of the scariness of Carla.

Diann

Carla is probably Fern's guru Guera...with her psychologist undertones. It should be interesting since from the moment she met him she's felt a connection. I wonder if they'll undergo some dramatic situation where either she has to rescue Fern or Fern has to rescue her...although I can't imagine they'll really run into any rough neighborhoods in they are hanging out in midtown Manhattan. LOL Maybe they'll be run over by the commuters rushing to Penn station. LOL

I was struck by how Luigi didn't seem to have such a hatred for Tomas like he has for the cuartel and Lety. I wonder why - was it the free food? That was a nice surprise today...he was tolerable to me in those moments.

Marcia ordering Alicia to spy on Lety. Why is everyone so darned interested in spying on her? She really does need a bodyguard in that crazy place.

Anyone notice any steps forward for Fernando today?

Did Aldo say he studied cooking in Paris and LONDON? Like, to learn great British cuisine?

Only with Jaime Camil (famously obsessively punctual) would a Mexican be early for a meeting and a group of New Yorkers be late.

Jaime Camil LOVES New York. Probably due in part to Broadway, since stage is his favorite medium. Carla asks Fern if he’s been to NY before. He starts to say, “I lived..” then stops. He lived in NY while he was in Latinologues on Broadway. this clip is from 2006 just before he left Broadway to work on “a TV project.” BTW he loves the subway and hates the NY taxis.

For a recent sample of Jaime’s English, check this appearance in Memphis.

Ah yes, the toy car. While Lety is yanking Omar’s chain in his office, she’s playing with it. A car is a recurring symbol of control in Fea. Omar reaches for the car and Lety won’t let him touch it because SHE is the one in control!

We got treated to the horse's butt once again. Can anyone figure out what else it could be?

We got a dicho today, from someone other than Irmita. I forget who said it, but it was regarding Fernando. Cree el ladrón que todos son de su condición. A thief believes that all people are thieves.

Yesterday when Aldo was talking to Aldad, he said, "Fernando’s fortaleza (fortitude, strength of spirit) depends entirely on Lety’s love for him." I think Aldo meant the strength of Fernando's love. But really it's his whole being. He was a mess before he started relying on Lety. He was a mess when she was in Acapulco. He didn't even start to see daylight until the day he saw her again at the meeting. What's that Gladys Knight song? "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me."

I repeat; Fernando GROW UP! How does he get away with the childish behavior, especially in a business meeting? Now, Aldo; GET A GRIP! If a woman keeps backing away from you that indicates that she doesn't want you to invade her personal space. Aldo is so sure of himself and that he's the better person for Lety that he keeps pushing and pushing. Lety needs to push back, but unfortunately, she made a bad decision today. Agreeing to go on the trip with Aldo is going to suggest to him that he's right in what he is thinking. Omar; HOW STUPID CAN YOU GET? Omar is going to be a detriment to Fernando and not his best friend. And then there's Carla. Considering who is playing this character, we know she's going to try to interfere in Fernando's and Lety's relationship. Fernando is going to be under a major test for a while. I hope he passes it because if he succumbs to Carla's charms, he can kiss Lety goodbye. Interesting set-ups for the future in these epidsodes. We'll have to see how they turn out. I just wish that Lety would believe in the love Fernando has for her. Wonder why it's so easy to believe the psychological verbage of Aldo?

Why can she believe in Aldo & not in Fernando? Because Aldo does love her and support her but Fernando is still in love with himself. Lety needs Aldo to keep her head about her -- for now-- and I think that Fernando is going to need Carla for the same reason. Let's face it. If Lety & Fernando got together & understood each other the show would be over. At least in this show there is no evil person keeping the lovers apart. The only thing keeping them apart is their own lack of confidence and self esteem. They are eventually going to work that out. They will be better people. The gurus (thanks for the term GP) are good people serving a good purpose. I hope they find happiness later -- just not with Lety or Fernando.

Güera

BTW how young is the person last week who thought that Aldo's cute crow's feet were evidence that he is ancient?

--me again

I agree with you Guera - if Lety and Fern were to get together now it would still be pretty disastrous for them both. They will be better people after their experiences with Aldo/Carla (if Carla is going to have some sort of relationship with Fern).

Wasn't it Aldo who said today's dicho Paula H? In some ways he's right.

I think there's a bit of a dance going on between Aldo and Lety. He chases, she runs, then when he takes a break, she comes back his way. If you notice they are starting to have lots of lonnnnng meaningful glances so there's some level of attraction between the two, no matter how we might feel about it here on the board. I think Lety uses the desks, chairs, etc to shield herself from Aldo because she's afraid to love anyone at this moment because of how things ended with Fern. I think if Fern were so aggressive with her in the space of the office you might get the same behavior from Lety, that's my sense of things...

someone asks why Lety can't see how much Fern loves her (or maybe I imagined it, but I'd like to take a crack at responding) - I believe in my heart it's because of the simple action he refuses to take of getting rid of Marcia. I think in Lety's eyes that would be proof that he's available to love her.

I'm scratching my head trying to think of steps forward for Fern. It's tough because there was so much stupidity from him today just because of the association with Omar. I think him resisting getting into the cab with Carla and then reflecting on how he used to be is probably the biggest step forward that I saw today. I don't think Fern has done a lot of self reflection in the past...so to me that's a big step forward. Now if only he would officially end things with Marcia (although could we count what happened today as an end - even though she asks Alicia to keep an eye on Lety?)

Let me get this straight. Aldo, the world renowned chef, who’s writing a book about the traditional foods of Mexico, needs Julieta to not only teach him about mole, but to actually MAKE the mole. So the people who come to eat the banquet of this famous chef will instead get the cuisine of a middle class housewife. Not that I doubt that she’s a good cook. But if she’s the expert, why do they need Aldo? Why not just have Julieta write the book and mange the campaign? I think she’s a much better person to give Lety strength and wisdom. And if she can manage Erasmo, then Luigi should be pan comido (a piece of cake).

Several people (PG, Marcia, etc.) have spoken of NY being a time of change for Fern. In our very first scene in NY, Marcia calls and tells him “You’ll never grow up.” Marcia’s predictions are very often the exact opposite of what happens, like when she told Lety, “You’ll never be more than a lowly secretary.”

Paula to respond to your rhetorical question - Aldo has much better packaging than Julieta. He's guapo & women everywhere will want to taste his food. LOL. I certainly wouldn't turn it down... it would be interesting to see Julieta write a book and get her own cooking show. I smell another alternative plot... :o)

Lety keeps saying that she needs Aldo’s strength and support. I think she should be getting that from Tom instead. He’s unconditionally supportive, he doesn’t pressure her, he doesn’t make her feel uncomfortable, he believes in her ability WITHOUT his help, he knows which buttons to push, and she adores him with no complications. When Lety tells Aldo her problems, he pulls her close and mumbles to her. When she tells Tom her problems, he talks sense, gives good ideas, and affirms his confidence in her. Aldo’s sure he’s a better support than Fern. I’m sure Tom is a better support than Aldo.

Okay, the horse thingy on the Receptionist's desktop.
Its a cat. A cat with its rump up. Rump up, front down, head facing sideways.
Simon was holding it and petting it today.

Guera, you are wondering how young I am if I think Aldo's crow feet are ancient?
I'm not young... I saw the moon landing live (but I was in single digit years)
I also clarified that my idea of ancient is not so much looks, but comportment. Aldo acts like Lety's father. He's so stuffy and "full of himself". He is not matched for our fun-loving Lety. (Remember all her antics we have grown to love--she's a doll)

Diann

Thanx for the link to Jaime's interview in english. His voice and accent seemed so phony to me in today's episodes, in NY. I was glad to see that he doesn't really speak like that in english!
Fernando was all over the place in that meeting--he's so concerned with what he can't control back at Conceptos, that he can't concentrate on his job at hand. I think Karla is a diversion, but think Fernando will be able to resist.(Unlike his buddy, Omar, who would have been with her ya).
I think lety was embarrassed telling her circle of friends that Fernando y Aldo were fighting over her--and, for that reason, said it the way she did.
Almost as if to say 'can you believe--they were fighting over ME?"
Their reaction was bothersome--by them not believing her, they reinforce the belief that she is not worth fighting over--instead of building her up, they are tearing her down.
Omar is getting more air time and I can't complain about that. he needs to stop bad-mouthing Lety/calling her names, if Fernando is his good friend.

Paula - I think the thing Tom has never offered Lety and something that Aldo can is making her feel like a desired woman. I think that's the point of adding him to the plot plain and simple...Without feeling like she's desired it might take even longer for her to improve her self esteem (she still needs lots of work here). I don't think Tom was doing that before - in fact I remember from some of the earlier eps him joking about her being so Fea...Tom is a good friend, but I don't think he gave Lety the type of support she needed to break through all of the years of BS she's gone through. He's in no position to act as a coach to her because he's in the same situation in my opinion. I think he can listen to her and support her yes, but help provide her with experiences that help her to grow beyond it - not so sure.

LOL - I'll have to take a look for the cat's arse. I've never really paid much attention to it - even though you guys have brought it up several times on the board. I'll watch for it today.

Diann - was it you that thought Aldo seemed more like a father with Lety when they were riding the bikes the other day? I actually felt that it was a light moment where he was pushing her to have a little fun. The tone of it felt playful and not really father-daughter to me, but I guess you're right if you grew up with your father helping to push you on a bike, then that's what you relate to... I love how the same scenes leave us all with such drastically different impressions of what's going on...such fun on this board.

I'm imagining Omar riding along on the trip to get that contract signed today in some crazy way. Him in the trunk or stowing away in the back seat and then popping up at an inopportune moment again. That man has impeccable bad timing! Almost like Lety and her family...I don't think we'll see an Aldo/Lety kiss anytime soon with all of the distractions they have going for them. (I know this makes some of you very happy). :)

hey paula, can you send me the url for your episode summary list for LFMB? I want to see when some things are coming up, whether they are coming up soon or not. have to make room in my dvdr for some upcoming eps...

Diann, alive at moonlanding, but in single digits... welcome to the club. I was a baby when JFK died, and my brother and I were tied to the 13 in b/w tv at home when the moonlanding was shown live.
GP, I think Lety will only be able to begin to consider Fernando actually loving her, not only when he breaks the link to Marcia, but he also has to break the influence link with Omar.
Paula, the car as symbol of power, good catch!
did you see that the light wood positioning statue is also on the desk in Eva Luna?
I agree that Tomas supports Lety more unconditionally but i also agree that he does not provide the self-assurance on the 'i can be atractive' side. That only Aldo has done, and Fernando early on butshe won't believe it for a while.
Marie, good catch on cuartel downplaying Lety about the fight reason is hurting her self-esteem.
I agree that if Fernando wants any chance at Lety when he gets back, he better resist the temptation of Karla, otherwise, game over!

Marta, the episodes list is at this link. I'm cleaning up the entries as we watch, so some future entries might be incomplete. My future numbering could be off by 1 at some point.

I saw it as a milestone that Fernando prayed that God would to keep all the beautiful women away.

I like that we see Fernando's trip. In BLF he left and came back in the next cap, "semansas despues." Let's talk about that more next week, after we've seen more of his trip.

good point Paula, we don't see any details about Armando's trip, how did he 'mature', were there any temptations, any challenges, so it is nice to see that sequence inLFMB. definitely good subject for next wk discussion

It's funny, the comments here expressing concern about Carla. It's like having a flashback to 2007. I remember how nervous I was too when she showed up!

I don't think anyone ever came right out and said it, but I think we were all thinking the same thing: please please please Carla, don't be another Aldo.

I'm way behind on watching and hopefully will catch up over the weekend, so I still haven't seen the dinner with Ariel, Omar screaming like a girl/squealing like a pig, etc.

So the thing on Jazmin's desk is a cat in heat assuming the position? What a very strange thing to put on display in a business office. (Though of all the places in Conceptos for it to be, Jazmin's desk makes the most sense.)

I agree with those who think Fernando dumping Marcia would make a big difference to Lety. Why can't he figure that out? She told him as much when they were in Cuernavaca. She said no nookie until he breaks up with Marcia. As far as Lety can tell, nothing's changed between them at all.

I've wondered how realistic it is for Fernando to be that dense. But then I think about all of his past behavior and conclude that for this character, who has probably never tried to look at anything through someone else's eyes before, it's realistic enough.
