La Fea Más Bella #279-280 4/1/11 Hope is crushed.

Capitulo 279.
Read 5ft Latina’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Lety says she needs to think about Aldo’s proposal and everything that’s happening / what’s really happening. Aldo tells her that what she needs is to tell him yes.

2. Fern tells Marcia that Lety was jealous about Aurora, and he thinks she’s confused and doesn’t know/realize who she really wants. Marcia counsels him to not get his hopes up and his heart broken.

3. Ali locks Tom out of the bedroom of their new apartment. She tells him he should make her his assistant and triple her salary. Ali is obnoxious to Tom throughout the show.

4. Lety tells MamaJ that Aldo proposed. Mama worries that Fernando will suffer. Lety says Fern has decided to go on living, and he’s thinking about taking up with someone else. Mama says, “And you believed him?”

5. Caro tells Lety she likes Omar and he’s changed. Lety tells Caro Aldo proposed, and she has to give him an answer today.

6. Lety tells Fern that Aurora is not for him. He comes up behind her, inches from her ear, and ppppuffs in her ear as he asks if she’s jealous.

7. Fern tells his diary that he showed Lety he was capable of forgetting about her and pursuing another woman, so she could be happy with Aldo and not think that he (Fern) was suffering. But instead she got jealous which means she still feels something for him. Then he hears Aldo propose to Lety, and she accepts.

8. Lety suddenly realizes she forgot about Fernando. He quietly says, “You forgot about me when Aldo walked into your life.” As always, Fernando’s first worry is Lety’s happiness. He congratulates them and leaves. Lety says she feels horrible for Fernando. Aldo says, “Oh, I’m sure he’ll recover quickly.”

9. Marcia tells Omar that Fern has no interest in Aurora. He just faked it so Lety could be happy. The cuartel sees Fernando suffering. Fern tells Omar what happened, and Omar only asks if Aurora is coming in today.

10. Lety and Aldo make their announcement to the Padillas, and Julieta asks if they’re going to invite Fernando.

11. Fern writes, “I have no hope left. Lety’s getting married and I have to forget her. First I had to learn how to love her, and now I have to learn how to forget her.”

12. Lety tells Tom that her problem is worse than his problems with Ali. She doesn’t want to deceive Aldo but she doesn’t want to tell him about Aurora.

13. Aurora signs her contract, but she signs Lety’s signature block by force of habit.

Capitulo 280.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Aldo has a talk with Fernando. See the transcript. He says that Aurora is a great option for Fern (5 times), Lety would’ve been very happy with Fern because he’s sure Fern loves her, and he’s convinced that Fern deserves Leticia’s love.

2. Omar shoos the others out to be alone with Aurora. He says she should give him a chance. She says he plays with women and refuses to commit. He says he wants to marry her and grow old together. She tells him he’s vain, arrogant, and incapable of seeing his faults. He only wants her as a trophy; he doesn’t even know her.

3. In rehearsal, Fern fumbles his lines because of all the stress of the day. Aurora is snotty about it. He invites her out for drinks though his heart’s not in it. She acts like she’s above such an invitation. He says he just wanted to talk about Omar. Whatever Aurora said left him very depressed. She says she’s not the slightest bit interested in Omar. She decides she’s finished practicing for today, since Fernando isn’t in costume. She leaves.

4. Fernando tries to throw away Lety’s picture, but he can’t. To distract himself, he starts doodling on the Aurora picture in the newspaper. He says everyone thinks she’s beautiful, but he thinks she lacks something. He modifies the picture to make her look perfect – unibrown, mustache, etc. He’s proud of his work, but then he realizes the result is Lety!

5. Omar tells Caro how he felt when he first saw Aurora. He’s learning how to feel. It’s love, but love is suffering. She says, “not when love is returned.” He doesn’t think anyone can love him because he doesn’t deserve it. She tells him to open his eyes and his heart.

6. Origel tells Sara that the dinner with Colunga is tonight. Ali stole two blank Conceptos checks. She buys lots of bling and tells Tom her papi bought it for her.

7. Fern decides that the picture looks like Lety because that’s how he drew it. Of course Aurora can’t be his Lety. But he puts the picture in his pocket to examine later. He tells Omar he feels an urge to take Lety to the end of the world where nobody will find them. Omar wants to go to Tibet and get away from all women. Fern gets clobbered again when he hears the cuartel celebrating Lety’s engagement. Irma’s heart goes out to him, and he shushes her so his suffering won’t spoil Lety’s spotlight moment.

8. Omar calls to Caro but then gets tonguetied. They both steal besitos. At home, Omar starts thinking about Caro’s words, and he finally puts one and one together. (Why not “put two and two together?” Because that math is too complicated for Omar.)

9. Fern goes to Lety’s house, telling himself he just wants to say goodbye to Julieta.

10. Omar shows up at Carolina’s door. He tells her he just wants to be close to her. She excuses herself to dress and they can go out for coffee. He follows her and she doesn’t stop him. He says maybe it’s time for him to open his heart. She kisses him, and they kiss and kiss and kiss.

Spanish Lesson, Aldo and Fernando.

A: I respect you.
F: Like the winner respects the loser?
A: You’re not a loser.
F: Who’s with Lety?
A: No, we all won.
F: Yeah, right.
A: You learned how to love.
F: Lucky me, except that I have no one to love. Instead I get to see you beside the woman I love. I fought for her but it wasn’t enough to ask for forgiveness, nor to show her how much I love her. Do you know that I proposed to her too? And she accepted. But then she realized she felt something for you and had doubts. I would give my whole life so that she would return to me
A: You’re right that you need to put your life back together. You should get close to Aurora. She’s a great option for you.
F: Oh, that’s all I need. Now you want to find me a novia?
A: I just want to help.
F: Oh really? You want to see me happy?
A: You’re a good person. I’m sure that Lety would’ve been very happy with you because I’m sure you love her.
F: Yes, I love her, and where has it gotten me?
A: Look. Leticia decided, and even though she chose me, I’m convinced that you earned it (hiciste suficiente meritos), and you deserve Leticia’s love.
Aldo leaves.

Comments:
I just wanted to point out two Full Circle points today.
1. Fernando decides that he has to forget Lety, just like when she went to Acapulco.
2. Fern tries to throw away Lety's picture, just like Lety tried after the letter.

Near the end, the cuartel, especially Irma, were concerned for Fernando. They went to check on him in his little office and he seemed to welcome them in a become part of them. Not sure of all the dialog.
La Paloma

Thanks for the post Paula. Poor Fern. What is Lety thinking. After that little ear whispering dealie, how could she possibly pick Aldo. I got goose bumbs just watching that scene, and yes I replayed it a couple of times.

Wow - that's a good Full Circle, La Paloma. Fernando becomes an honorary cuartel member.

Why does Lety feel that she has to answer Aldo "today"? Is it because she knows that the more she thinks about it, the more she's likely to get cold feet?

It's like she's determined to make a bad decision and she just wants to go through with it as fast as she can so she won't have time to turn back.

There was a GREAT comment from Anya on the old #279 recap:

The "real" Lety wouldn't have done this, but she was sacrificed when LFMB got extended each time with short notice. This "other" Lety that is there now, is an imposter. They should have given her amnesia - then her actions would have made more sense.

Gah! I forgot to pick up some Chunky Monkey so will have to make do with a banana split!

Julie, thanks for sharing Anya's comment. It's the only theory that makes sense to me.

I'm only partway through today's episode and will finish later, but I just got to Lety's "yes" and had to share a big, fat boo hoo with everyone. It bugged me that Aldo gave Lety a due date for her answer.

Here is how it SHOULD have gone today.

Yesterday Aldo proposed. Today Lety is at her desk, still wrestling with her decision, unable to commit to an answer when her future depends on it. She sets her jaw and heads to the batcave. Fernando’s gazing at her photo on his computer screen, and he doesn’t hear her come in. She closes the door more loudly behind her. He quickly closes the photo, hoping she didn’t notice, and stands to greet her.

F: Doña Lety, what can I get for you?
L: I have to make a very difficult decision, and I realized I need more information.
F: What would you like? The month-end report? The balances?
Fern moves toward his keyboard. Lety catches him by the hand to stop him.
L: No, it’s not a business decision.
Fernando realizes, then it must be a personal decision. He moves his hand up to her forearm, and takes a step closer. They’re two feet apart.
L: It’s a … a kind of a test.
F: What do you want me to prove, Doña Lety? Anything! (waits for her to explain)
L: No, Don Fernando, I want you to … I want to observe … I have to know how I would respond.
Lety takes a step closer. They’re a foot apart. She gazes up at him. Que the music.
Fernando closes the gap between them, touches her face, and pauses, just to make sure he hasn’t misunderstood. In answer, Lety closes her eyes dreamily.
They kiss, and the iceberg quickly changes to a hotspring.
They pull apart, eyes locked. Then Lety’s face drops and her shoulders slump.
L: I can’t. I can’t. How can I?
Fernando’s smile is quickly replaced by fear and pain. He’s played this scene too many times already.

Just then Aldo walks in, and takes in the scene before him. “Leticia, I came to talk about our future. This is the day we are making decisions about the rest of our life together, and here he is trying to come between us.” Shoulders slumped, Fern tries to retreat. Their future is the last topic he wants to listen to. He starts to excuse himself, but Lety catches him by the hand and asks him to stay. That’s all the permission he needs. Fern stands behind Lety, pressed against her back, hands protectively on her shoulders.

Lety stammers, “Aldo, es que, es que…”

Seeing which way the wind is blowing, Aldo quickly shifts his approach. He tries to escape. “Mi amor, this is a very important decision; I shouldn’t pressure you to give me an answer before you are ready. You should take more time,” and he tries to leave.
Fern holds the door shut, gets in his face, and says, “The señorita was talking to you.”
Lety begins, "Aldo, oh Aldo, I am really grateful to you for saving my life and saving Conceptos, and you are a truly wonderful person. I'm sure you would have made a wonderful husband. But..."

I'll let your imagination take it from there.

Now THAT'S Lety!!

Thanks Paula.

I thought Lety should have told Aldo to stuff his deadline. Seriously. "Why on earth would you want me to make this kind of decision in haste?" Unless he's just as determined as she is to follow through on this bad decision.

Paula, that would be the sane and plausible way for Original Lety to deal with Aldo's proposal.

Alas, we are stuck with the beta edition of Lety 2.0.

Wow seems like this novela has been going on forever.........it started b4 tu duena and it is still going on........talk about loyalty

I wish I could reach through the screen and slap Lety. She is hell-bent on making a decision to meet Aldo's deadline. She has no backbone with Aldo so she caves into whatever he wants. Through the first half of the first episode, Lety literally dismisses the thought of Fernando and how much pain she is going to cause him. If she had chosen Fernando, Aldo simply would have walked away and considered Lety stupid in her decision-making. Fernando, being the bigger man, is very gracious to Lety and Aldo. He is in agony especially since Lety had agreed to marry him but switched allegiance when Aldo threatened to leave DF. This Lety is a mercurial person who acts upon whims and doesn't think things out. Now she has stuck a knife in Fernando's heart and I don't think she realizes that. Only Julieta and Irma know how much Fernando is now suffering. If Lety wanted payback for what she endured, she's done it in spades. Amazing how much she has forgotten about how painful it was for her when she thought Fernando was still going to marry Marcia. The only thing I can figure is that Lety doesn't really believe that Fernando loves her with all of his heart, but for some stupid reason, she believes that Aldo does. Wonder what Aldo will do the first time Lety gets tired of being the doormat and stands up to his dictatorial ways?

If I have to watch multiple episodes of Fernando suffering and Lety mooning over Aldo, I might just stop watching or puke, whichever comes first. This show has taken a decidly turn for the worse. UGH, triple UGH, quadruple UGH!!!!

I'm going to fly with the comments tonight. How dare Lety as Aurora be so thoughtless, so callous, so bitchy to Fernando. Anyone with some common sense has to know he is hurting badly and so what does Lety/Aurora do? Rub salt in the wound by being so snotty to him.

I know Lety and Fernando are supposed to end up together, but right now I think I would cheer on her living a life of meeting Aldo's whims. She doesn't deserve the man that Fernando has become. Lety deserves a life of being controlled by a micro-manager husband and not the life of freedom that Fernando can offer.

This show has taken such a cruel turn that it's almost unbelievable. I don't see the old Lety in the character now being portrayed. If I were Fernando, I'd let her live with the consequences of her decisions, concentrate on getting Conceptos on solid footing, and then take a long vacation away from everything. The poor man needs time to heal

As to the prime directive for Fernando that Lety must not suffer, I don't believe Aldo has such a thought process. If the decision was different, Aldo would have made sure that Lety felt his pain. Protecting her is not foremost on his mind but it is on Fernando's.

Paula, Fer said:
y yo daria mi vida entera con tal de que regresara conmigo...
(and I would give my whole life so that she would come back to me)

Paula, I love your rewrite of today's episode -- but if it had gone that way we'd be done today instead of 20 episodes from now.

Have we mentioned the full circle point that Fernando is now writing his yearnings for Lety in the diary while Lety hasn't been seen with her diary for a while?

It's a silly nit-picking point but I noticed yesterday that someone called Carmina Aldo's editor when in fact the editor called Aldo in to assist the two women who are writing books in a series coordinated with Aldo's Sabor de la Vids. He's sort of their editor rather than the other way around.

he also said earlier 'i fought for her... but it wasn't enough to ask for forgiveness... nor telling her how much I love her...

Fernando was so heartbreakingly sincere in that conversation with Aldo. This entire episode was so sad. That moment Pata caught in the screen shot -- when Fernando shushed Irmita so that Lety & Aldo's ;moment wouldn't be rained upon !

At least Omar can put one and one together because Lety with all her education and degrees definitely can't. I was sure when Fern was standing behind her blowing in her ear she was a goner. I was getting goose bumps just watching! But no as Anya from the old post said this is not the real lety. I like the idea of amnesia though I think it is more like abducted by aliens!! How could her body not have a physical memory of what it feels like to be next to Fernando even with amnesia!!
And Paula this is when you should have sprinkled "what a man" throughout these two episodes. Fern let Lety off way too easy.
I like that Caro and Omar are getting to know one another. That Omar sure knew how to move and made all the right ones. Once he figured it out he went for it. Maybe that is the good thing about not having too much of a brain thinking can keep you from acting. I think Caro is good for him, she will be the brains and will know how to deal with him. He will be always in awe and couple of steps behind and they will grow wonderfully old together. Did anyone notice how small Caro's hands were next to Omar's?
Jenn

Yes, Guera, Pata chose a really great screenshot. She really has an eye for them. How far he has come from the selfish love of the old days, when he never even considered Lety's needs.

Marta, thank you for deciphering those two sentences for me.

I warned you, you'd need Chunky Monkey today. Was I right?

Guera, good catch on another Full Circle point, the diaries.

Remember back in 224, Aldo told Aldad, “My love is so great, if I knew Fern would make her happy I would step aside immediately.”

Today, Aldo talked with Fernando privately. He said two significant things, “I’m sure that Lety would’ve been very happy with you because I’m sure you love her,” and “I’m convinced that you earned it and you deserve Leticia’s love.” It would seem that Aldo’s criteria from 224 has been met, in spades! So Monday will he “step aside immediately”? Fat chance!

But wait. Remember Diann’s Theory from back in #224, based on an ambiguous line by Aldad – maybe Aldo fell into his own trap. The theory says that Aldo came to DF, intending to keep Lety away from Fernando until Fern grew up, and also put a fire under Fern to transform. But in the process Aldo fell in love, just like Fern fell in love while following his plot.

Soooo. If that’s the case, then Aldo’s criteria has been met. He told us so, very specifically, in the meeting with Fern. Now he needs to shake Lety, but he can’t just disappear – he’s too tangled up in everything. And he can’t dump Lety because that would create all sorts of emotional baggage. So he has to get her to walk away from him. Let’s watch and see if he does stuff to try to shake (i.e. ditch) her. I can say this without risk of spoiler because I wasn’t watching for proofs of that theory, last time around, so I’m really not sure.

I know this theory really puts me out on a limb. And I know the 50-episode extension wasn’t perfectly woven together like Gaitán’s original plot. I’m not going to defend this theory to the death. But who knows? Maybe it will prove to be true.

And now I’ll go even further on that limb, and I know this point is REALLY weak. When Aldo caught Fern and Lety kissing, and he left for Acapulco, what if that was an effort to shake Lety, an effort to “step aside immediately”? And what if the proposal was meant to jolt her into reality, to force her to make a decision, since he knows she loves Fernando deeply and he assumed she’d refuse her proposal? But both those attempts failed, so he has to keep looking.

I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist but I find it so fascinating how emotionally invested many of the posters. And, rightfully so as it's a huge investment in time (if nothing else) to hang in through 280 episodes! Seems like there would be fatigue for even the most stalwart of viewers.

Since we are missing the traditional villain or villainess (and in telenovela land these people seem to be beyond evil) memes there has to be someone to root for and against. In LFMB it gets murky as no one has been truly good or evilly awful.

Having not watched soaps in the US but knowing that all sorts of implausible crazy plot lines crop up (coming back from the dead, a twin showing up out of the blue, etc) I suspect that writers purposefully are trying to emotionally snare viewers (and then I think you're supposed to literally buy into commercials and product placements.

Acckkk. So, here I am trapped in the analysis web :-) Maybe we're just supposed to enjoy the parts we can. If the whole lot ended up having to share jail cells that could be a whole other soap or just another disappointing Seinfeld like ending...

DrJ

Paula, I hear what you're saying but that's assigning Aldo some altruistic motives. Sorry, don't think he's got them. What he has got is the hots for Lety, mainly because she is pliable. Yes, he admitted today that Fernando loves Lety and deserves her, but Aldo won't give her up. Until she makes a firm decision for Fernando, Aldo will hang around hoping to maintain the upper hand and win the prize.

Yes, there are no true villians in this show, but right now Lety comes about as close as one can get. I'm really disappointed in her, but I know that's because of the nitwits that wrote the extensions. It's almost as if Lety has had a frontal labotomoy; she is that changed.

Ahh. But you see, DrJ, the emotional investment is half the fun! It's like screaming on a roller coaster - it increases the thrill.

It's melodrama. It's meant to be overly emotional. A good TN accomplishes two functions (besides entertainment) for me: catharsis and escape. If you allow yourself to get totally wrapped up in it, then for an hour per day (or two hours with these double caps), the world and its real struggles disappear. When the show is over, you go back to the real world refreshed, with no damage to brain cells nor bank account, like most forms of escape. Better than refreshed, you feel elevated. Tapping into the extreme emotions of the show, you get the cathartic relief without the messy inconvenience of having the tragedies happen in your real life. And few free things are as fun as yelling at the TV!

Both you and the anonymous poster talked about the chore of sticking with it. I admit, I'm getting tired of doing the writeups, but I'm not tired of watching the show. That would be like getting tired of reading a book you love, even if it's a few hundred pages. It's not a chore.

As for the analysis, yes, we dig pretty hard into it. That's because Gaitán's original plot stands up to it. I'm convinced that no other TN has the solid, complex, consistent character development of Fea. Not even a great TN like CS-93. We analyze it because we CAN. At least, we could until the extension (cap 251) when the characters became muddled.

Just finished watching both episodes and can let out a big sigh of relief. I thought we were going to have to go into the weekend completely unsatisfied but at least Caro and Omar gave us a tidbit. Caro seems kind of tall next to Lety but next to Omar she's teeny. I liked her without her usual wild makeup and I thought it was cute how she answered the door in her jammies and big slippers.

Other than that...ya basta! Seeing Fernando's grief is hard on the viewer but it sure gives Camil's part a lot of meat.

DrJ, one of the things I really like about this show is exactly that murky quality surrounding the characters. They are not just bad or good, they are definitely shades of gray. Good characterization is a wonderful skill; it can hold the viewer even if the plot becomes weak. (Are you paying attention LFMB writers?) This show has excellent character development for most of the main characters. Even when they do something we don't like we can understand what motivates them to do it. Anyway, that's what got me hooked.

I absolutely agree with you Cap'n Sylvia. These characters are wonderfully murky -- as are we all. Marcia has shown such breadth of motivation, from the basest to the most altruistic. Fernando has done some horrible things and is so often infantile in his behavior but he has risen to such a level of selflessness toward Lety that he is heroic. Lety has shown wonderful supportiveness and horrible vindictiveness. Erasmo is so bombastic and yet he can be unpredictably understanding and soft. Even Alicia has shown some hint that there may be a person under there (a larcenous one as of today)

And Aldo is a complex mix -- though --as much as there are people out there who hate him -- he hasn't hurt anyone & has never been vindictive. Yes he has been hilariously competitive with Fernando. Those scenes where they whisper insults at each other are wonderful.

It is true that he told his Dad that if he thought Lety would be happier with Fernando he would step aside. What would make his think that??? Lety is all lovey-dovey with him. She accepted his proposal. He certainly knows that Fernando loves Lety deeply but so does he. So far as he knows Lety has weighed the two and has chosen him. He knows that if she had chosen Fernando he would have made her happy. BUT she didn't -- she chose Aldo. He's not a jerk for being happy and for planning for a future.

Yes, Guera. Not only do the characters exhibit tremendous complexity and transformation, but you can see WHY they change, the cause and effect. That's why pod-people-Lety is so aggravating to us, because behaving in a way that is not consistent with her character.

As for Aldo, hold on! Aldo didn't say "happier." He said "happy." "If I knew Fern would make her happy I would step aside immediately.” And today he told Fern, "I’m sure that Lety would’ve been very happy with you."

Did this bother anyone else? Caro asked Omar to wait while she went upstairs to change her clothes, but he went up anyway and walked into her room without asking.

Lety says she feels horrible for Fernando. Aldo says, “Oh, I’m sure he’ll recover quickly.” Do we hate Aldo yet? Does anyone remember how Fernando responded when he was in the exact same situation?

Laughed at Omar putting one and one together and i do like him with Caro. My feeling is that he has always been a little in love with her but didn't know it. He is also afraid of love and watching Fern's never ending agony just reinforced it. When the over the top drag queen came along he was free to let himself go and being Omar went too far. Now that he has a real chance one can only hope he doesn't screw it up but then again it is Omar.

DeJ you talk about the investment in time with a novela as long as FEA recognize that some of us are going at it for the second time. That will be 600 hours of the cuartel and Lety's stupid behavior. Dios Mio are we all crazy.

The thing about Fea that makes it stand out is that there is some semblance of reality to it. I happen to be watching another novela that has been on for some months. I came in about 6 or 7 weeks ago and the protagonista has been kidnapped TWICE, had amnesia, was in a plane crash and landed in a deserted island when she was bitten by a poisonous snake, was shot at by her own uncle at her cousin's wedding, fell down a handful of steps and is now paralyzed. Talk about a total lack of reality. By contrast the protagonist has only been shot, been in car accident that burned his hands severely and is now in prison for committing a murder of which he is innocent. Fea has avoided all of that and that is why we hang on and enjoy digging into the psyche's of this almost real people.

Barb I'm with you about wanting to reach through the set and smack Lety a couple of times. She is so self centered it boggles the mind. She is now wringing her hands at the thought that Fern might be hurt but she didn't give it a thought after she accepted his proposal and the very next day ran after Aldo. I also suspect that is why Aldo forced a deadline on her because he knows her wishy washy track record. In a nutshell she simply does not deserve a man like Fern. Frankly even bossy boot Aldo doesn't deserve a wimp like her.

This was one of the most painful caps to date. Pure torture to watch. I just dont get it... When Lety saw the hurt on Aldo's face after finding out about accepting Fern's proposal she ran after Aldo and dumps Fern like he had leprosy! Yet she sees the pain on Fern, and she continues with BeachBoy. Aldo's reaction to her accepting Fern's proposal was no where as intense as Fern's reaction.

Lately it seems the show is not centered on Lety (the title character). It's been focused on Fernando being the character that gets all the transformation and redemption. His character is way deeper than the shallow whiney child Lety hás become. At this point, Fernando is way ahead of Lety in the maturity game. She doesnt even deserve to be with him at this point. He hás suffered way to much and too long over Lety. And she suffered for what? All of 2 weeks before BeachBoy had her forgeting everything in DF and played in the sun and sand! Contrast this with Fern wanting to KILL himself in the bar, struggling against Crazy Carla's advances AND LOSING EVERYTHING HE OWNS! To me, Lety hás become an ugly brat. And the ugly is her ínside.

Diann

You go, Diann. Yes Lety has become ugly; it's the Aurora in her. Such a conflict of personalities in Lety. There's the beautiful that is also Aurora, the mean and spiteful (Aurora), and the perpetually confused and wishy washy that is Lety. Will the real Lety that Fernando fell in love with stand up. Aldo fell in love with the indecisive, babish Lety not the mature Lety who loved Fernando without reservation. Guess what, she doesn't love Aldo that way. Lety just wants her cake and eat it too. Wonder how she will react if Fernando decides it's best to leave? But he won't, at least not until Conceptos is back in the black. Once it is though, he'll walk. For self-preservation, he'll try to walk away. I don't think he can take much more pain, agony, and suffering.

Don't you think that Fernando HAS to walk away. I think he has to give up Conceptos as well as stepping back from Lety before he completes his growth arc. And if I'm right how will Lety deal with that. I think that choosing Aldo was safer partly because Fernando would always be around while Aldo had made it clear that if she chose Fernando he (Aldo) was out of there.

The new Lety is certainly different from the original. Is it because of this silly Aurora plot which someone made up in order to squeeze the extra episodes out of a story which was essentially wrapped up?

deciegirl is right that this show has avoided the telenovela plot tricks of amnesia and kidnapping, comas and undeserved imprisonment. It's much more character driven. But that is probably why the unreal details of running the business can be so annoying eg -- Aldo's instant book, the sudden shift to TV production, the work force which never works etc. etc. etc.

The things that are bothering people are all a direct result of the 50-cap extension.

1. The Aurora plot. I like it, but many people hate it. To fill 50 caps, they needed a substantial subplot, not just “Saimon flirts with Jazz” o algo así. The Aurora plot is a main storyline throughout the extension. Just be glad we have some distraction from baby Lety, oppressive Aldo, and suffering Fernando.

2. Pod People Lety (e.g. the pod people took Original Lety and left this travesty in her body). To have an extension, Lety has to reject Fern for 49 caps, unless one of them is imprisoned, in a coma, has amnesia, etc. Fern is perfected, so he can’t be the cause of her rejection. Original Lety would never have dumped him. Any sane woman would run back to him in an instant. So they had to make Pod People Lety thoroughly irrational so she’d stay away.

3. Tom and Ali. I haven’t heard complaints yet, but I know they’re coming. Up through the wedding, I liked the Tom and Ali storyline. Soon it will become shrill, inane, and repetitive. Even worse than it is now. Again, they needed filler.

4. Lety gets lost in the jumble. The original plot was about Lety’s transformation, and how a transformed Lety caused Fernando to transform. FABULOUS story concept. But in the extension, Original Lety is gone, and Pod People Lety is a weak concept. The story can’t focus on something so unsubstantial, so her storyline fades away and Fea becomes the Perfected Fernando Show.

Now for the good things.
1. The comedy. To me, the extension has some of the best comedy of the series.

2. Camil has to carry the show throughout the extension, and he’s got the chops to do it. It really showcases his tremendous talent.

3. Fernando is super-perfected. In the original, we saw him transform to the point that he was worthy of Lety. But in the extension he becomes super-sexy, super-sacrificial, super-manly, super-compassionate. In every way the perfect man. He never reached those heights in the original. What’s more, he fully recovers the sparkle of old Fernando. And my gosh, he is soooo sexy when he suffers!

4. They left the original in tact. For that I am deeply grateful. They let Gaitán’s masterpiece wrap up as it was meant to, instead of fouling it up. Think of the tacked-on 50, not as an extension but a sequel. Imagine that you’re in the 70’s and you like Happy Days but you hate Joanie Loves Chachi.

Paula,
You mentioned this idea that these 50 episodes are like a sequel once before & I have been grateful to you ever since. Once in a while when I get irritated I go back to the dawn with Fernando and realize that that was the perfect ending. It makes me smile - then I think of the dawn which is Aurora as another day -- an add-on and I try to enjoy it for what it is. As you say it's like a new story. On that level I enjoy Aurora and the complications she brings.

Thanks as always for putting our heads back on straight.

OK... still not through the Friday episodes yet, but I re-re-watched Lety with Aldo after the Carmina kiss from Thursday and here is what I saw:

Lety is almost crying. There's definitely a quaver in her voice, and she doesn't let him see her face right away - she turns away from him first, does a slightly silly walk, and her face looks sad just before she does the fake "cough" shtick and jokingly pretends to be sick.

Aldo takes her humor at face value and goes along with it, ha ha ha. (I think it's well established that he sees what he wants to see in people's responses to him.)

I think that if Lety had been more open with her reaction, Aldo would not have laughed. He would have eagerly pounced on the opportunity to heal her with more soothing platitudes gleaned from fortune cookies and bumper stickers.

But Julie, if Aldo thinks she's joking around, look what that says. Lety is on the verge of crying, and Aldo has no idea. From the point when Fern switched to sacrificial love, he was totally tuned to her emotions. When she almost drown, it woke him up, a few hundred miles away. When he's crying in the cave, he uses all his force so Lety won't hurt for seeing him crying.

Guera, thank you for the note. It's gratifying to know that I can bring some sunshine to your perspective.

In the first part of 279, when Lety seems jealous and Fern has hope she still likes him, I love how his smile starts at the right side of his mouth, and crawls across his face.

Aldo is one clueless guy, Paula. He sees people in the perspective of how they are useful to him. For all his platitudes, he doesn't have the soul of a poet, dreamer, or sensitive person. Aldo's perspective is black and white, which is why he is going to freak when he finds out who Aurora truly is. Fernando has already guessed and he'll respond by saying that Aurora is the beauty that he's seen in Lety and fell in love with. I would just like to see the real Lety come back. She would have been concerned about Aldo's feelings but she never would have dumped Fernando especially after accepting his proposal of marriage. This new Lety has a cold-hearted streak in her a mile wide and it just doesn't fit. Will the old Lety ever return? I think she has to because I don't see Fernando with this version. He's becoming the ideal man; she's becoming the ideal shrew!!!

Yeah - like I said, Aldo is oblivious to other people's reactions, including Lety's. That's nothing new.

My only point was that I don't think he was callously laughing at her tristeza. He was cluelessly laughing at her joke, unaware of her gut reaction (as was I when I originally recapped it).

Even without the tears, a more sensitive person than Aldo might have recognized her joking as a defensive smokescreen, and still not laughed at her. But Aldo just isn't that perceptive.

If she had blatantly cried, I think he would have reacted more sympathetically; I don't like him, but I don't think he'd intentionally be cruel to her, either. But the subtlety of her response was wasted on him, and el mar isn't there to give him any hints.

Notice Aldo's super-lame advice to Tom? It's even lamer than what he tells Lety. If he tells Lety fortune cookie philosophy, what he tells Tomy comes off little heart candies!

Those of you who had trouble with Caray Tues and Wed, has the glitch cleared up? Can you find the Thu & Fri recaps on the Fea menu?

I'm finally just catching up on all of the recaps and comments and watched the caps earlier today. Lots of good discussion here and all I can say is that although I really hate the "pod" Lety - I think that unfortunately she and Fern set up a horrible situation for her to hurt him on a regular basis simply by his proximity to her as her assistant in the batcave. I know he intended it to help get the company back as well as to prove himself to her, but let's be realistic here - if you were trying to forget your ex would you REALLY want to work so closely with them on a daily basis. I think both Lety and Fern are at fault for his daily little hurts... it's horrible for him, but I think he's a bit of a masochist and I guess it's because he had hope (until today). I personally think that Lety should have refused to allow Fern to move into that office - yes it made for all of the great full circle moments that we've enjoyed over the past couple of weeks, but it's also led to great heartbreak for Fern.

Aldo should step aside. In his conversation with Fern today he proves just how aware he is of Fern and Lety's love for each other. I'm not sure how I feel about the theory of him falling into his own trap, but I do think that Aldo probably loves Lety enough now that he doesn't want to let her go. It's selfish, but as Guera says - he's just responding to Lety's seeming happiness with him. He doesn't realize that he's probably stunting her growth forever. I also wonder if his words from before "that he would step aside if he felt Fern could make Lety happy" were just conveniently forgotten by the LFMB writers.

I really don't think Aldo's actions are malicious. I think he just does not come across as very empathetic or intuitive about what others are feeling (especially Lety). Right now I'm not sure if that's an intentional thing or not. Plus from his perspective Fern has done all of these bad and unforgivable things to Lety - so he still thinks he's the better man for her.

I really hate the whole Tomas and Alicia filler storyline they have going. Going back to the theory of Alicia and Lety being opposite equals - they actually both are horrible liars at this point. They both have committed fraud that could probably be punished criminally as well. I think if Lety were to marry Aldo at this point she'd probably treat him just the way Alicia is treating Tomas. LOL

Fern doesn't want to believe that Aurora is Lety. I guess it goes back to that context thing - he just can't see "his Lety" as being as cold and obnoxious as Aurora is...that's the only explanation I have for him not investigating his theory more... I was so happy for until I realized he was just going to shrug his theory off. (Can you tell I'm ready for this whole Aurora thing to blow over?!?)

Yes Paula - I can now see the recaps on my old link. Thanks for fixing the problem.

Oh another argument for why Lety accepted Aldo's proposal even if he was laying down a rather nasty ultimatum he came with a ring in hand. No matter how much we think that diary was a sweet gesture by Fern - I think given his past track record of lies and not really being so straightforward with Lety about their relationship - Aldo bringing a ring to the table shows once again that he's serious about Lety.

In fact here are a few reasons I can think of why Lety felt obligated to take him as her novio.

1. Aldo meets her in Acapulco, saves her life & she saves his, then he moves his life to DF to be with her (within a month or two of having met her).

2. He has introduced her to his father and talked about her (to his father) as someone he's interested in having a relationship with (Fern never did this until recently and I know his relationship with his parents suck, but still he was ashamed of her until his change).

3. He could publicly admit his love for Leticia (as he likes to call her) well before Fern could - in fact he did it at least a month before. You may not agree with me on this in fact I know you probably won't, but for someone with Lety's fragile self esteem I think this was REALLY important to her...

4. Aldo delayed his lifelong dream of opening up his restaurant to help her to be "free' of Conceptos... debatable I know, but I think these big gestures are really what Lety loves

5. Aldo made the effort to get along with her friends and family. He accepted her best friend Tomas, he gets along and has helped the cuartel and her parents love(d) him.

6. He got down on one knee and presented her with a ring - remember he'd made promises to her before his changes, but fell through on them and he'd just officially broken up with Marcia a night or two before proposing to her - although he'd promised her many times before that he was done with her.

I think that for Lety she needed to see concrete things with her own eyes and Aldo offered this to her. I'm not saying it's actually the right way to look at things, but for someone who has been treated like a leper for most of her life - I guess it's all about actions and not words - especially since believing in just mere words had burned her in the past. Even though Fern had moved into his "fully matured, sacrificial love" he hadn't proven it enough to Lety yet. I think he's more than proved himself now, but she's blinded by Aldo's bright smile...I honestly think she is happy for now with Aldo. She enjoys him, he's not done anything to hurt her, he's the safe choice.

Paula- you asked what Fern said to Lety when Aldo saw them kissing and she was upset about it...Here's what I pulled from the old recaps:
"Fer tells her, “Don’t be sad. We’re together you and I. I understand that Aldo was a part of your life that’s over now. He says they are going to get married and he’s even going to ask formally for her hand today. She cries more. He asks her if she has doubts. Does she love Aldo? She tells him she loves Fer, but now Aldo's gone. He asks what they are going to do. He picks up the diario and says the pages are blank, but I guess we aren’t ready to write our story yet. I saw your face when he left. Your tears speak louder than your words. You need to be free to figure out your feelings. I don’t want to force you or obligate you to be with me. I love you and want to marry you. We need to write our story without any shadow of doubt. I love you. So essentially figure it out then call me. She loses it."

Oh and Guera I agree Fern has to walk away. I think that's what it'll take for Lety to open up her eyes and see what she really loses when he's not there loving her and supporting her from afar. It'll feel like she's naked and maybe she'll be happy for a little while with Aldo, but she'll eventually have to go back to Fern.

GP, thanks for replaying the conversation Fern had with Lety the day he "let her go to figure things out".
He was so confident in his love for her and her love for him, that he truely thought she would come straight back to him. He was being so noble, that day I felt Fern was a completely changed man and his transformation was finished.
But the idiotic extra 50 caps just extended a suffering Fernando for us to watch. And to witness our lovable Lety turn into an unrecognizable (from within) person.
Rereading the dialogue from that scene makes me even more frustrated with the extra 50 caps. They finally made it back to one another, they both were changed for the better, and they were reunited as soulmates.
Then to just pull the rug out from under us viewers in such an abrupt change of character on Lety's part, is unpardonable.

2 weeks to go.... Will it be 2 more insufferable Aldo platitudes and kicked in the teeth Fernando?
I wish I would have stopped watching after cap 250, then tune in again at 299. Then maybe I could have skipped all Aldo and see Happy Fern with Happy Lety at the end.

I agree that Lety chose Aldo because he showed her concretely how much he loves her and also that Lety is blinded by his smooth words. But Fernando has shown over and over again since Lety came back how much he loves her, but she doesn't have eyes to see it. She doesn't have eyes to see how much she is hurting Fernando; she only has eyes for what works best for her - sort of like Aldo. I blame Aldo for the Tomas and Alicia situation. He should not have given advice to Tomas on how to proceed. Somewhere along the line, Tomas has to wise up to Alicia's ways and lay down the law. It's the only way she'll respond to him, unfortunately.

It will be interesting to see how Fernando proceeds with Aldo and Lety officially engaged. I think he'll throw all his efforts into rescuing Conceptos and keep his distance from Lety. Which is really what he should do. She only realizes how she feels about someone when they're not around to fawn all over her. I think this would be a good time for Carla to come back into the picture. Lety needs to see what it would be like with Fernando with another woman. She saw it before but not with the new Fernando. I think her attitude will change dramatically if she thinks she's lost Fernando forever.

Paula: "If he tells Lety fortune cookie philosophy, what he tells Tomy comes off little heart candies!" LOL! (Actually I don't remember what he tells Tomy. I watched the scene, but whatever he said to him was apparently too inconsequential to stick in memory.

Funny - nobody commented on how #280 started with the happy, fun, original (Conceptos) opening sequence rather than the weird, dreamlike (Acapulco) one. I was so excited to see that, both in 2007 and this weekend, that I nearly bounced off the ceiling.

Julie - when I first saw that intro, I thought Univision made a mistake and they were going to show an old cap. I was quite relieved to see that it was a new one, but you're right it's nice to see it back again... it's definitely more light in tone than the other one.

Diann- I really hope that these last two weeks find the show back on track and more than just a day or Fern and Lety happy together.

Barbara - Carloca!! Noooo! I'd actually rather see Fern go with this new and improved Marcia than that hastily written maneater of a character. If Marcia had always been as understanding and loving to Fern as she is now - none of this story would have ever happened. In fact at this point Marcia is more deserving of Fern than this Lety pod person.

Georgia, you're absolutely right that Marcia deserves Fernando more than Lety. But she wasn't really jealous of Marcia. Lety was jealous of Carla, so that's why I suggested a return of the vixen to stir things up and let Lety realize that she can't continue to string along two men. Though she has accepted Aldo's proposal, she's still keeping Fernando near. That is one confused mujer!

You're right Barbara - Lety always felt guilty in regards to Marcia. If he were to get back with her - she might actually be more at peace about going with Aldo than with Carloca. Maybe Fern will go off to NYC to clear his head for a few weeks. I think that invitation from Carla is still open.

Yes, Paula, it did bother me that Omar followed Caro upstairs and into her room. I could make a case for standing out in the hallway if he really wanted to continue speaking to her, but not in her room.

She probably should have closed the door. But it looked like she might not have a door on that room.
