You can't blame Espy for feeling persecuted. Everyone keeps asking, "Did she die yet? Did she die yet?"

Thanks Paula and Carlos for our daily dose of high drama. Today's last rites scene did not disappoint. Good image choice of Espy's labored words. What I did not catch all of was whether she admitted to Luis that the baby was fathered by Diego. I came in when she was asking for his forgiveness.

Caption: "Well, it was nice knowin' ya, kid."

(Again in catch-up mode... This time it was an Irene-induced 30-hour power outage. But I think I'll finally make it tonight!)

Esperanza told Luis that Diego told her that the Virgin had sent him, so from that it's apparent she admitted to him it was Diego.

Very sad picture Carlos, of the end of a very sad life.

Tks Paula for doing this for us.

Variopinta

Espy also asked Luis if Diego would be punished too. She said Diego has to be punished, since/as she was punished. Note that her choice of words leaves it open, whether Diego should be punished by the inquisition or by God.

Thanks, Paula and Carlos. As Variopinta said ...a very sad picture of the end of a very sad life. So true. Poor Espy was a tragic figure who never had a chance. A warning to us all . I'm back at work, so I didn't get a chance to watch this episode yet. When I get home, I'm very tired. Well, onward. This novela is amazing . Get ready for some twists and turns. Julie~~~We were out of power on Sunday from about 11.00 to 8.00 pm. After Hub got out the ton of leaves that the wind had deposited in the pool yesterday, we put the cover on...boohoo. No more swimming until next year. I. Am. So. Bummed.

Susanlynn, I'm so sorry that your pool is closed. I look forward to cooling off in the pool each afternoon. I hate all the leaves but the shade does keep the water pleasantly cool.

Francisco is a guest in Cristobal's home and yet he and his backward son both shattered full wine glasses on the floor. Jerks.

The regidor is such a pragmatist hoping that God calls Esperanza home.

Loved how Diego promised Juana that he'd behave if they'd just kill Luis.

Some days I think I could like Antonio and then he says or does something profoundly stupid.

Carlos

Francisco is such a jerk that sometimes I find myself anticipating his miserable demise even more eagerly than Diego's.

But then Diego does something really monstrous and I get over it. :)

I'm still cutting Antonio a lot of slack because of his awful upbringing and the fact that most of the things he gets wrong are out of ignorance/stupidity. Francisco, on the other hand, is incorrigible.

As for Diego, he may or may not be sick in the head (he sure acts like it), but he seems to revel in his evil, which puts him back in the voluntary criminal column in my book.

Gasca seems almost resigned to his fate as a bad guy, as if he had no choice but to take the path that he's on. I'd like to know more about that. (And also where he got his strange fashion sense.)

I haven't gotten to Esperanza's death just yet, but it appears that she gets to die in bed. (For a while there, I thought she'd be burnt at the stake or something.) And all Francisco has to say about her fate is how swell it is to be a rich person!

I think Francisco is the most disgusting of the villains, but often Diego runs him a close second or a tie. Antonio may have had an unfortunate, cruel childhood but he is enjoying his power over Hipo just too much. I think his disregard for her son will turn her against him in the end and not just Luis's superior kissing skills.

Regarding Antonio, I've heard that men raised without a father often become over-masculinized. The have no role model for how a man is supposed to be, and they know they don't want to be like their mother, so they swing too far in the other direction, being loud, aggressive, violent, womanizers, etc.

I so agree on Antonio. He gave great advice to Andres, and then turns around and acts in a supremely stupid way with Hip.

I keep wondering what was considered rape in those days, as everyone keeps doubting whether or not what happened to Espe and Marina was rape.

I liked the camera angle just before Luis and Juana's confrontation. The camera was on her profile and he was reflected in the mirror above her head. Way cool!

Poor, sad, crazy Esperanza. Such a sad soul. I hope Mirtha gets a second chance and doesn't have a dreadful end just because her mistress was loca.

Francisco is a worthless ass. It's pretty bad when your own daughter thinks you are an embarrassing chump. Even Andres shines by comparison.

Carlos, what is that saying? Fish and house guests smell after three days?

I'm with you, Julie. Francisco sometimes infuriates me more than the amoral, soulless Diego. Jerk.

Novelera in AZ

I love the women's dresses in this TN. the blue one Juana had on was beautiful. Hipo usually has beautiful dresses on and never repeats them. They sure fit a lot of clothes in 1 suitcase in those days. The only one with ugly clothes is Hipo's mom.
It must be awful to be in your death bed knowing everyone is just waiting for you to die so They can back to their lives, not because they care.
Cristobal is a saint letting that pig Francisco live in his house. He wouldn't last one minute in mine.
Julie, love your caption.

What does Luis do in his lab?
Chuchi

Chuchi, as far as I can tell, Luis goes to the lab to brood, seethe, daydream, discuss True Love with Cristobal, and fiddle with glassware.

I think there have been one or two references to doing some kind of scientific work there as well, but that doesn't come up very often. It's probably related to either the silver mine or the cochineal bugs. Both would require some kind of laboratory work.

I think the lab scenes are supposed to indicate that Luis is an enlightened thinker, not hide-bound by the old Church strictures (although he is a moral and principled man). His interest in the stars and planets and all things scientific is part of what distinguishes him from the rest of the tribe who are still in the old, antiquated thought patterns.

Back from work,,loved all the comments. As to Luis's cool lab, I think that when Melinama first recapped the show, someone thought that he was making batches of margaritas . Some of those cool bottles are filled with a green liquid. Maybe Luis invented the margarita ! After all, he is a Renaissance man...with...as Cheryl points out soooo accurately ''superior kissing skills.''

Paula~~About that theory on men raised without fathers, my son-in-law was raised as an only child by his mother and grandmother after his dad left them. He turned into a very gentle, sweet investment banker. [No...that is not an oxymoron. Then again, maybe he's just sweet and gentle to his suegra .]
