Abismo de pasión #6 3/19/12: An Abismo de Tsuris

Note: Due to events in tonight's episode I hope everyone will understand that I was light on the snark. It just didn't seem right.
El Refrito without benefit of the tema (grumble grumble)
Rosendo leaves. Damián cries and knows he’ll never see his dad again. Elisa comforts him. Fina storms into Augie’s office and she is pithed. They have have to stop their spouses from running away!

Lo Nuevo
Augie is tired of Fina’s fabrications and asks if she doesn’t have anything better to do than invent stuff. She wishes she was just inventing stuff! She waves the bill for a flight for two from Mérida a Nueva York under Augie’s nose. Auguie refuses to believe what Fina is telling him. She insists the two wayward spouses are headed out of town for a luxury trip to the Big Manzana. Augie tells Fina that Estefania is at home with their daughter. His wife is not having an affair with Rosie and to prove it he is going to take Fina to his house. You know this is going to go all kinds of wrong, right?

Carmina Dorada (dressed in a lovely shade of coral) comes in a hurry to leave. Steffie offers to take her to the bus. Carmina says there is a car waiting for her and exits as Elisa enters with her cage o’ birds. She tells Steffie her buddy Damián is sad because his dad is leaving and not coming back. Steffie connects the dots. She grabs some keys from the sideboard and heads for Orangina’s room. Steffie confronts her sister. She knows she’s running off with Rosie. La Naranja plays dumb, but Steffie persists. Sure, her sister may say she’s leaving to put distance between her and the Hot Sauce King, but Steffie knows they are running off together. La Naranja finally tells the truth: that Rosie is taking her out of the damn Pueblo. Steffie begs her sister to reconsider and also to consider all the harm it will cause not only will it destroy Rosie’s family, but Carmina as well. Carmina says on the contrary, she will finally have the happiness she’s been unable to find. Steffie tells her she can’t be happy if it hurts others. Carmina Burra says she certainly can and tries leave, but Steffie blocks the door. Steffie tells Carmina she is not letting her go anywhere and that she’s putting a stop to the situation. She locks Carmina in her room. Carmina screams and beats on the door. In the hallway Steffie looks pained and Elisa asks why Carmina is screaming. Steffie tells her she’ll explain later; she has to leave for a bit and not to open the door for any reason. She’ll be back soon and if daddy arrives before she returns (he will), tell him the same. Elisa turns back and gives her mother a big hug and I’m already starting to cry. The succubus continues to screech from behind door #1

Night falls and Rosie waits. A storm is brewing.

The storm begins and we spy Padre Lupe and Gael as the Padre tells a tousled Gael about school, learning, being prepared. Maybe he could grow up to be a farmer and work at the procesadora. Gael reminds Padre that Damián's mother would probably never allow him in there. Padre reminds him that Rosie is the one in charge at the plant. Gael tells Padre that he likes Rosendo and that he would like to have a father like him. Padre Lupe agrees that Rosie is a good father. Padre changes the subject and asks why Gael didn’t go out with his friends today. Gael mentions Fina being sick and Padre asks why he didn’t tell him. Gael gives the typical kid response: “’Cause you didn’t ask” and a little comedy ensues.

Fina and Augie arrive at Casa Castañon. Fina immediately notes that no one is home. Augie again insists that Steffie and Elisa are home and must be in their bedrooms. Elisa appears and informs the two groan [sic] ups that mamá in indeed NOT home; that she left after locking up Carmina and leaving instructions not to let her out. Fina considers this definitive proof that Rosie and Steffie are fleeing together. When questioned, Carmina acts like she has no idea what is going on or why her sister locked her up. Fina needles Augie. Rosie and Steffie have run off together and they have to stop them. If they get to the airport in Mérida on time they can stop them! They can’t let them make fun of us! Augie is convinced that Fina is right and will not let Steffie do this to him. He leaves telling Fina to stay there. Elisa enters in time to hear Fina accuse Carmina of knowing about the plan all along. Carmina denies knowing anything. Elsia runs out of the room.

The storm continues to rage as Steffie arrives in a taxi where Carmina was supposed to meet Rosendo. The taxi driver offers to stay, but Steffie informs him she will be going back to the pueblo with someone else. She runs and hops into Rosie’s car. He is surprised to see her. She tells him Carmina is not coming. Steffie is determined to stop him from doing such a crazy thing. She can’t believe he could abandon his wife and child. There is no justification for what he’s doing. He reminds her that living with Fina is hell. Steffie thinks that still his family doesn’t deserve to be abandoned. She didn’t think he was that kind of guy. He just wants a little happiness. He’s drowning and just wants to breathe. She questions if he can be happy with Carmina in such circumstances. He swears he loves her and doesn’t want to lose her…he would rather die (anvil alert.)

Padre Lupe pays a call on his sick (take that as you will) sister. He’s informed that she’s been out since mid-day. He also finds out that Rosendo has left on a “trip” and that Damián is very sad and won’t eat.

Fina wonders if Augie has caught up with Rosie and Steffie. Carmina wonders why Fina doesn’t just go home already. Fina won’t budge. Carmina wants to know how Fina found out Rosie was leaving with another woman. Fina explains about finding the bill for the flight. When asked how she knew the other woman was Steffie, Fina says she always knew. Fina accuses Carmina again of protecting her sister. Carmina acts dumb. Fina questions her about the packed bags she saw in Carmina’s room. Was Carmina thnking of going with Steffie and Rosie?

Padre Lupe talks with Damián about his dad’s departure. Padre tries to convince the kid it’s nothing, but Damián is no dummy. Papá’s good-bye was way too final. Little Damián wants to know why his dad left them.

Ramona passes by on her cart as Steffie and Rosie continue to argue. Steffie wants him to reconsider what he is about to do. He and Carmina will never be happy if it’s at the cost of his wife and child. He has to try, but Steffie doesn’t think it should be done by running away like criminals. Rosie starts the car. He is going to get his Orangina and they’re leaving this very night!

Back at Casa Castañon Carmina is telling Fina she’s crazy. Fina asks again about the packed suitcases. Carmina feeds her the “going to Europe” story. Carmina says you would think, living in the same house she would have noticed if her sister was planning to to leave her husband and child. Fina thinks the burnished one always knew Steffie was rolling around in the hay with her husband (revolcarse.)

Steffie asks Rosie to slow down and not drive like a maniac in the rain. He is a man with a mission, he is going to get his juicy little Orange no matter what it takes. He speeds up. Ramona’s cart appears out of nowhere. Steffie grabs the wheel again. The car goes airborne and flips as it hits a cinder-block wall. Ramona throws up a prayer to the Virgen Santísima. Steffie and Rosie have been thrown from the vehicle. Steffie is barely alive next to the car. She tells Ramona that she has to stop them. Rosendo has passed away. Augie arrives and Ramona flags him down. Cue the heart wrenching music and sobbing from Augie. Steffie dies in his arms.

Carmina offers Fina some coffee and notices Elisa in the corner. She asks if the child always makes a habit of spying on adults. Elisa says she just wants to wait for her parents. Tia Naranja tells her they won’t be home until much later and she should go to bed. Elisa’s got spunk and stands her ground. Eventually she has to back down when the Orange terror orders her to obey and skedaddle.

Augie beats on Rosie’s dead body and screams ¿Por qué? Ramona tells him to leave the man in peace. He can’t tell you anything; he’s dead! Augie gets in his truck and leaves. Ass. Ramona freaks out and who can blame her? “We can’t just leave them!”

Fina wants to do something. She can’t just sit there, but Carmina says they can’t do anything. Augie returns and informs them of the death of Estafanía and Rosendo.

Half-time (grumble grumble) credits

Fina at first thinks Augie has killed them. Augie explains about the accident. Fina can’t believe it. Augie tells her to go to the accident site and see for herself. She cries. Augie locks himself in his office and Carmina tries to get him to open the door. The wailing wakes up Elisa. Fina can’t believe her Rosie is dead and Carmina keeps moaning that Steffie was her sister (you almost feel for her. Well played, Ms. Moussier.) Poor Elisa asks where her mom is. Carmina just blurts out “Tu mamá se murió, Elisa” and Elisa cries and screams. It’s a lie! Where’s my mom! I want to see my mom! Ok. I have to compose myself.....

....
I’m back. Fina is evil. She tells Elisa she will never see her mother again just as Damián will never be able to see his father and it’s all the fault of Elisa’s mother! Carmina tells the cow to shut up and leave. Elisa begs her aunt again to tell her her mother isn't dead. Carmina says she doesn't lie, her mother is dead. She tells Elisa to go talk to her dad; maybe he will open the door for her. Elisa begs her Papito to tell her her mother hasn’t died. She asks repeatedly where her mother is. She begs him to open the door. Augie sits at his desk and cries while his child begs him to open the door. Keep it together for your baby, dude. She needs you. I have to go cry again. Excuse me.......

....
Police arrive at the accident scene. Assured that the proper authorities have arrived, Ramona leaves the scene.

At the procesadora, Gabino is packing his things. Don Lucio hopes Gabino's leaving isn't because Don Lucio was put  in charge. Things will go back to normal when Rosendo comes back. Gabino says Rosendo won't be back for a while and that's exactly why he's leaving.  “They won’t have Gabino to kick around anymore.” (Loose translation.)

At the cantina Lolita and Braulio make like tórtolos. He’s trying to convince her to stay a little longer. One of the locals, one Jacinto, runs in and announces that there has been an accident with two fatalities and it’s Don Rosendo’s car!

Ramona returns home agitated she talks to herself about hoping the bodies are taken care of. She feels she couldn't stay or she would have been blamed. She informs Paloma of the death of her friends mother. Paloma cries for her friend.

Padre Lupe has calmed Damián down and the child is asleep. Padre Lupe confesses to Antonia that he is worried about Fina and Rosendo. Fina comes in. She informs her brother that Rosendo has died and that she always knew Steffie would snatch him away from her. She blames everything on Steffie. She explains to Padre Bro that the two were running away together and crashed (estrellarse.) Fina wonders what she will do without her Rosie. She can’t live without him and she curses Steffie and says I hope you rot in hell (¡Ojalá que pudras en el infierno!) Lupe begs her to calm down lest her son hears. Fina doesn’t care, she wants the world to hear (Qué oigan el mundo entero) and for everyone to know (que todos sepan) that Estefanía killed her husband. She stole him from her and now Rosendo is dead, dead, dead, dead, dead (got that?) Damián has awakened and overhears this.

Lolita returns home and finds Elisa crying in the kitchen. Elisa tells Lolita about her mother’s death. Lolita comforts while Elisa talks into her shoulder.

Braulio informs Don Lucio and Blanca about the death of  Rosendo and Estefanía.

The Funeral/Las exequias/El velorio
Gabino arrives at Hacienda Arango to pay his respects. What the heck is he wearing? Bandana wrap on his hand, one sleeve rolled up, the other unrolled and unbuttoned. Gabino offers his help to Padre Lupe and is a little miffed to find out Don Lucio has everything under control. They talk about veiling Rosendo's body. Padre Lupe mentions the body of Estefanía and Gabino is quite confused. He is one of the few people who actually knows that Carmina was the Rosendo’s ho on the side. Lupe continues to explain that no one knows why the two were together and unfortunately they both died.

Damián wants to take his horse to see Elisa, he knows she must be unhappy if her mother died. Antonia asks him to please not go. Fina will be pithed and take it out on her. He has to see her. He asks the help to just say she didn’t see him leave. He promises he won’t be long. He wants to see Elisa.

Elisa remembers how her mom combed her hair every morning and now that won't happen. Lolita tells her to be strong. She knows Elsia will miss her mother, but Lolita promises never to leave her and that Elisa will always have her. Besides, her mother will be in heaven and will always take care of her from there...like a guardian angel. Elisa asks if Damián's dad is also in heaven and will also take care of Damián. Elisa talks about the ugly things Fina said. Elisa begs to see Damián. Lolita thinks she should wait until tomorrow. She offers to go make Elisa some tea. When Lolita leaves, Elisa says she needs to see Damián and heads out.

Gael is looking for Padre Lupe. Paloma tells him about the accident. Gael runs off to see Elisa.

Fina will not cry another tear for Rosendo. Antonia informs her that Padre Lupe is tending to last minute details and that Gabino is helping with the wake. Fina asks for her son. Antonia tells her she can't find him. Fina tells her to keep looking.

Lolita finds Elisa's room empty and knows she went to look for Damián.

Damián rides for Elisa. Gael runs for Elisa. Paloma follows.

Carmina is crying. Lolita tells her some men have arrived to make arrangements for Estefanía's body(?) and Lolita wasn't sure what to do. Carmina asks what the boss said and Lolita explains he is still in his office and she didn't want to disturb him. He is destroyed by the death of Estefanía. Carmina says she will see to the men.

Gael runs after Elisa, Damián arrives. Damián and Elisa hug. Paloma takes Gael's hand. Forshadowing.

Augie takes a shotgun from the closet. He loads the weapon. He cries.

Cut to shot of Carmina. Gunshot. Augusto?

Cue the synchronized swimming (in jeans?)
Avances:
  • Fina prohibits the friendship of Damián and Elisa
  • Separated by treachery
  • Carmina looks in the mirror

BAH! Can't get the spacing right!!!

"Carmina tends to the men" is perhaps the statement of her life.

Good work, Sara.

Of course the good Padre will suffer for the next 50 episodes about the non-confession of Carmina. Alfonsina will poison everyone about Estefania, and toxic small-town life will flourish. Good times!

Thanks, Sara, for a masterful recap showing appropriate restraint for our deceased princess kindheart, Estefania.

I found myself wishing Stef had told Ramona why she was in the fatal car. Not that anyone would believe Ramona, either. Just hate for Stef's name to be slandered all over town.

Also wished that Augie could have held his hat over Stef's head to shield her last moment. Picky, I know, and it may have been moot. Augie is something of an annoying coward.

Elisa was excellent in her scenes of disbelief and grief.

I can't look forward to life for Elisa without her mother's love.

La Paloma

I agree that Augie is nothing but an annoying stupid coward...
btw, i just saw a preview where Gabino confronts Carmina and tells her 'the one that was the lover of Don Rosendo and was going to escape town with him was you...' (so you all know this will be Gabino blackmailing Carmina for years, no wonder the brief take on the credits where he is holding a pearl necklace and she is standing behind him clenching her teeth...)

so well written the detail that the only witness to the crash is a woman noone would believe... the whole town gossips that she is a 'witch' so her word is a bit less worthy than anyone else in town... but she will have more pieces to the puzzle than anyone else, with Estefania telling her 'i had to stop them'...

now... reading Sara's masterful recap..

You know this is going to go all kinds of wrong, right? BOY HOWDY!!

Carmina's dress... coral or mandarine? i guess i am expecting it orange so that is what i see... lol

ORangina and the HOt sauce king... hmmm ... and what color is hot sauce? dark orange! duh!

Elisa turns back and gives her mother a big hug and I’m already starting to cry. .. whaaaa! me too.

Fina needles Augie. LOL what a vision!! where? on the rear end?

Padre Lupe pays a call on his sick (take that as you will) sister... is that your idea of a subtle snark? ... cool and collected...

Damián rides for Elisa. Gael runs for Elisa. Paloma follows.
er... more like Damian rides toward Elisa, Elisa runs toward Damian/town, Gael runs AFTER Elisa and Paloma runs after Gael trying to catch up... lol kids will always be kids... but oh so sweet...

Gael runs after Elisa, Damián arrives. Damián and Elisa hug. Paloma takes Gael's hand. Forshadowing. absolutely!.. loved the acting by the boy as Gael, with the awkward feeling when Paloma took his hand...

and your finale...
Cue the synchronized swimming (in jeans?)
AWESOME... great job Sara!
and yes, some funny stuff but mixed in with VERY VERY sad moments especially involving kids this young... and stupid coward or resentful/vengeful surviving parents.

Sara:
This is such a good recap of a sad, horrid capitulo. Even though I knew it was coming it still was very hard to watch. You did a nice job with the tone—it was just right I think.

And what was with Augusto as Estefania was dying? If her neck wasn't broken before he manhandled her it sure was afterwards. And how do you leave your wife's body in the rain and just go home? Go for help or the police but what was he thinking? What?

So Gabino, and Padre and Orangina all know who was really running away with whom. Great set up for lots of misery, as you said, Marta.

I felt terrible for Ramona's helplessness. I once came upon a fatal car accident in a terrible storm. It was a very powerless feeling to have so little control of the outcome of a set of fatal injuries. In the end, I just held the hand of the woman as she passed. So sad.

I appreciate Lolita's sentiment to try to comfort Elisa by promising Elisa she will always be there for her, but she may not have control over her employment. I don't want Lolita to disappoint that darling little girl. I think Augusto is going to be useless as a parent for a while.

Thanks again, Sara, for the recap.

EJ

Sara, pobrecita, you sure took one for the team tonight. So sorry you got stuck with the tragedy on your first Abismo recap, yikes! Nevertheless, you somehow managed to squeeze an amazing amount of humor and pathos into your recap.

First, I HATE FINA!! Whew, it felt good to get that off my chest. She's very sadistic toward all the children, even her son, and I don't like it. I also don't like Augusto. I'll just say DITTO to EJ's comments about him.

Poor Elisa, what a way to find out her mother died. First the heca-b**ch Fina, then yowling Orangina, then check-out dad. Thank goodness she has her little friends and Lolita. I felt your pain Sara.

"The succubus continues to screech from behind door #1", well you just KNEW I'd love that one, right?

Also liked "Augie gets in his truck and leaves. Ass." Indeed. He just went home and forgot his daughter existed.

Sara, I'm so glad you are on this recapping team! Enjoy your vacation and we'll see back here in April.

EJ, sounds like this episode hit close to home with you. The story about you coming upon an accident is very sad and touching; it sounds like it is imprinted in your brain. Having actually met you and seeing first hand what an unusually compassionate person you are, I'm sure you were a comfort in those last moments.

Sara, first sorry you had such a difficult episode to recap, but you did a masterful job. I had a tought time watching this one...I can never stand to watch when the children are mistreated or cruelly manipulated by the selfish, stupid adults around them. Thankfully all the kids do have some loving people around them, as always, it's the maids and priest, but at least they are there. (I know the Padre and kiddie scenes if they have them are going to kill me...)

"Fina will be pithed". The return of my favorite word! Yeah, I think this will pretty well sum up her character for the remainder of all the episodes.

And won't it be ironic that we may actually cheer Gabino once in awhile as he yanks Carmina's chain.

Augustus is a dumb A** who didn't deserve his wife and won't deserve his daughter. He can kick the bucket any time, thank you.

And I agree, that ending with the kids-foreshadowing for sure. That's ok actuually--I sort of like the idea of Paloma and Gael together and certainly am looking forward to the actors who play them pairing up versus Boyer and Zepeda. No offense to them.

Off to work and to lay in some more kleenex. Funerals to come.

Boy this was a hard one. But you did a great job Sara.

We have a worthy villainess in Fina. I hate her already and I can only imagine what dastardly deeds await.

It's sad to see these actors killed off so soon. They were both very likable -- even the cheating Rosendo.

These kids are such good actors -- especially little Elisa.

Sara: Thank you for doing such a wonderful recap on this episode that ranks high on the list of most heartwrenching epiosdes. Ever.

TI smiled at: "Carmina Dorada (dressed in a lovely shade of coral)", "He is going to get his Orangina and they’re leaving this very night!" and "Orange terror". I did not however, smile at anything Carmina said or did. Although I have to give Sabine props for powerful acting, I really hated the character last night.

I also couldn't fathom how on earth Augie left his adored wife out in the rain without so much as covering her up?? He's quickly turning into one of my least favorite characters here.

The only bright spot was the playful interaction between the good Padre and Gael. I don't want him to grow up!

Pure tragedy all the way around.

Elna June, I was sorry to hear of your terrible experience. I am glad that you were able to provide comfort to the accident victim. No one should ever die alone. Bless you.

Diana

EJ- I can't imagine going through something like that. You are an angel in disguise.

Augie is weak willed and cowardly. Flaws Carmina is sure to take advantage of.

I'm glad we get the kids for at least one more episode, though I hate the circumstances.

Young Damian may look a touch awkward now but he acted like a true galan last night. I fully expect to see more of the actor in the future.

Who has tonight? Blue Lass or Elna June? I fear you will be getting a lot more tsuris :(

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I appreciate them. I am humbled by the recapper talent here and hope to one day have even a smidge of the wit and style displayed here.

if anyone saw La hija del Mariachi or Corazon Salvaje, there is a lot of that same 'sweet priest/ rebel kid' relationship here (in LHDM it was more like a strict dad and rebel son) ... its like Gael is preprogrammed to go against any recommendation/goal the padre has for him, but they still have a great relationship and can read each other like a book.

yes and Gabino and Carmina will be like 'ladron que roba a ladron' type stuff, where we actually enjoy watching as he pulls her chain every now and then..

At least Elisa will have Lolita and her godparents (i sure hope so) and Gael will have the Padre... Damian... well, he can't count on his mom letting him get anywhere Elisa per previews...

SO who's got some puzzle pieces?
Gabino of course
Carmina of course
poor Padre Lupe of course (what a burden on his back!)
Lucio knows Rosendo was leaving and he can tell it was not Estefania who Lucio was messing with ... will he suspect Carmina?

And of course Ramona knows a thing or two...

Tonight's my night -- uf. I can already tell that all the crying's going to get on my nerves.

Sara - you did a beautiful job! I bet you are glad that's over. I could only watch up til the "opening" credits as I have to be upbeat at work and thought I better save the rest for after.

Thanks for the sniffs.

Rosemary la Otra

Great recap Sara... expertly crafted. You handled this delicate heart-rending episode with a deft touch. Well done.

I guess we'll soon be heading into the next phase of this. I sure wish they'd lingered just a bit longer with the kids. I suppose I can take consolation in the fact that Altair Jarabo will soon be making an appearance.

I too felt profound sympathy for Ramona... and for you as well Elna June... what a terrifying experience.

I could swear I saw Estefania take another breath after Augusto abandoned her body. That made me even more angry with him.

The kids broke my heart last night. I hope we get to see them happy again before the show moves on.

Carlos

Sara - Thank you for the recap, and 'spacing' looks fine to me in my Firefox browser. I agree, this was not an episode for snark, nor was there much in the show tonight, to generate snark.

I sooo cringed when Augusto loaded that shotgun. It leaves such a horrible mess for the family to clean up. Poison is not as messy.
Assuming that shotgun was in his mouth when it was fired, I say good riddance to Augusto, for leaving the scene of the accident and the victims. Infeliz imbécil.

I'm glad Rosendo's car missed the little burro.

The Orange One is to be commended for her acting skills; the looks of grief and guilt near the end of this episode. Wow... her facial expressions...

The actress who is young Elisa is really awesome actress, too. I am impressed.

The actress who is young Elisa is really awesome actress, too. I am impressed.
ITA... and I am SOOOO going to miss her freckles... so cute!

I am really going too mourn the loss of the young actors as well... Especially since we are getting Angelique and David as replacements. I don't dislike them they just don't move me.

Sabine did a fabulous job last night. I may not like the character, but the actress is very talented.

PS- Cap'n I especially appreciate your words. In the misquoted words of Sally Field: You like me! You really like me!

Sara, I was thinking of you as I watched last night. I can imagine how hard it was to write this. But you pulled it off, amiga!

You told the story masterfully and with just enough touches of black humor -- like "Padre Lupe visits his sick (take that as you will) sister". Thank you so much. As Sylvia says, you really took one for the team last night.

As for the episode itself, I found the first half almost tedious. The writers had deliberately immunized us against the horror of what was to come. We had seen the previews, we had read the synopsis. We knew. If you read the comments from the last few days, you can see the "anticipitory grieving". So when the dreaded thing actually happened, we were (or I was)already almost numb to the loss.

One detail in the first half was strange -- Elisa's calmness about Stef's leaving Carmina locked up and ranting like a hound from hell. It seemed, I don't know, surreal.

The more interesting part of the episode was the aftermath and how each character reacted to what had happened. They, unlike the audience, didn't see it coming so their reaction was raw and affecting.

Who knows or suspects the truth?
As everyone mentioned:

Padre Lupe -- bound by confessional so he can't tell

Carmina -- obviously

Blanca and Lucio -- they have strong suspicions but no one will believe them.

Gabino -- he'll make a living out of what he knows.

Ramona -- she overheard Rosie and Orangina's argument and heard Steffie's last words. But no one will believe her.

Damián (he saw the Orange one leave the blue house after Rosie) -- Orangina will deny and no one believes kids.

Elisa (she knows Carmina was making a play for her Augie. How will she put the pieces together?) -- see above.

Lolita and Antonia (servants of Stef and Alfie, respectively) almost certainly know or suspect the truth. They won't speak up because it would cost them their jobs and no one would believe them anyway.

in honor of Orangina's acting last night, i am using an orange highliter today for whatever i need a highliter for ...
couldn't find any avocado color highliter ... still looking...

Great recap of a complicated chapter.

So, we have to look and listen to Carmina forever? My eyes hurt when I look at her. I'm sure she glows in the dark.

Will we have two or three funerals? Until the door is opened to Agusto's office, we'll never know. This novela has been moving at a rapid pace. I love the kids, but I'm looking forward to seeing David Zepeda and Mark Tacher, who was very good as the protagonist in La Hija del Mariachi.

Now, the show must go on. Let the games begin.

NM.. great summary of actions and reactions...
and ITA on...
One detail in the first half was strange -- Elisa's calmness about Stef's leaving Carmina locked up and ranting like a hound from hell. It seemed, I don't know, surreal.
it was indeed confusing that a little girl would take someone screaming her soul out that calmly even if her mom told her its alright.

Sara- You hit the perfect notes in your recap of this hard episode. Gracias amiga.

I think Elisa being so clam about Stefi locking up Carmina demonstrates two things: 1) Elisa thinks Carmina would do something bad enough to deserve being locked up. Remember, she and Tia Orangina have had some nasty run-ins lately; and 2) Elisa has absolute trust and faith in her mother. If her mother says something is fine/justified (tia's lockup), and that she'll be back, then Elisa will 100% believe it. I think this will come into play as the years go by and all these people are telling her that her mother was a homewrecker who was running away and abandoning her. Will Elisa believe them, or will she believe in her mother? I think she will believe in her mother.

The little actress that plays Elisa also had a rough night in Corazon Valiente, the 9pm Telemundo show, last night too. Her parents anounced, after many explosive fights, that they are divorcing, and her mother left the home, giving little Genesis (our Elisa) a parting speech about how she's not capable of loving her the way she deserves and that she'll understand some day. Then she gets in her car and drives away, leaving her little heart broken daughter in the driveway.

It was touching how we all got to witness Damian saying goodbye to his dad, and Elisa to her mom. It felt like we were in on an awful secret.

Watching the brief crash scenes from the opening credits play out in real time was eerie. Somehow it made it MORE suspenseful watching it unfold.

I hope the cunadera does not suffer more stigmatization for being at the scene of the accident.

Vivi - may I put you in charge of pointing out Elisa to me again in 10 years when she is starring in something? She really is a talented actress and I look forward to following her career.

Sara, great recap with just the right emphasis, snark where possible, but tender and insightful.

I'm a fan of Winston Churchill sayings, and wondered what he would say about this TN and the characters.

Elisa: "If you're going through hell, keep going."

Augusto: "He has all of the virtues I dislike, and none of the vices I admire."

Estafania: "Although prepared for martyrdom, I preferred that it be postponed."

Damian: "Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it."

Rosendo: "We are all worms, but I believe that I am a glow-worm."

Alfonsonia: (addressing Winston) "Winston, if you were my husband I'd poison your soup."

(Winston addressing Alfonsonia) Alfonsonia, if you were my wife, I'd drink it."

Padre Guadalup: "I am an optimist. It doesn't seem much use being anything else."

Paloma: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

Carmina: "History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it."

Gael: "This is not the end. It's not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

David

Rosemary,
It was touching how we all got to witness Damian saying goodbye to his dad, and Elisa to her mom. It felt like we were in on an awful secret.
i think you spoke for all of us.

David love your WC quotes! (Especially the Alfi ones--lord I despise that woman).

I agree with you on Elisa not reacting to the screaming Mimi beyond Door #1. Her mother being especially calming with her definitely helped. Gave her the impression most likely that Tia was just being a brat.

I lost it when she stopped and ran back for the hug...but so glad she had that moment unlike Damian's final moment with his father.

Oh, and I'm of the mind that Augie winds up ok--he's so inept, he couldn't probably pull off killing himself right either. Jerk.

David,
LOVED your quotes.. esp this couple

Alfonsonia: (addressing Winston) "Winston, if you were my husband I'd poison your soup."

(Winston addressing Alfonsonia) Alfonsonia, if you were my wife, I'd drink it."

ROFLOL!!

I agree with daisynjay.
Oh, and I'm of the mind that Augie winds up ok--he's so inept, he couldn't probably pull off killing himself right either. Jerk.
he is so clueless he could not figure out how to hold the shotgun and pull the trigger all at the same time...

Sara, thanks for the recap. This was a very sad episode indeed.

I agree with those that Elisa trusted her mother enough to believe whatever she was doing was okay. Poor Damián can't say the same about his dad. Rosendo had a horrible taste in women, he liked them harpy and crazy.

We had 15 episodes with the kids in Cañaveral but I know it won't be like that here. Still, they have been staying very close to the original so I don't know how the writers will compress 9 episodes in the next 4, or more like 8 in 3 because I just saw tonights episode and most of it is a carbon copy of CdP episode 7 (which is okay because that script was too perfect to change it).

Jarocha

Rosendo had a horrible taste in women, he liked them harpy and crazy.
absolutely... at least in that sense, Augusto did have a better 'eye'...

too bad his 'ear' was not there in the same wavelength... it was not there for the right people and there for the wrong people for sure.

man, i hope i can find my Canaveral vhs tapes from when i taped it late night in Uni... it would be great to rewatch the kids portion again...
Jarocha, do you think they will extend the kids section this far? i doubt it, the audiences would take a longer kids section back in the Canaveral days, but i doubt the audience would wait that long for Angelique, David and Mark to show up in this version.. my guess is we will be there by end of friday at the latest

Sara congratulations on a great episode recap in spite of the bad turn of events.

EJ - I am so glad you were there to hold the hand of the woman who passed. It must have been a comfort to have someone with her at the end.

daisynjay - ITA that Augusto is too inept to off himself. He'll continue to be useless (and probably very negative about Steffi).

David, your Winston Churchill quotes are amazing and perfect. Thank you for taking the time to share them, edited by your scintillating wit.

Marta: 3 weeks for the adult leads to show up would be unthinkable these days, so I doubt it. But, we still have several developments left for this period that I thought were important.

This backstory always goes like water to me, the kids chosen in both versions have been very good and so likeable. Every time I've seen Cañaveral, I get sad for a moment when we lose them but then Daniela Castro, Juan Soler and Francisco Gattorno appear and all is right again. Lets hope Boyer, Zepeda and Tacher live up to what the story requires.

Jarocha

praying everyone in Mex including our AdP staff is alright.

We know that Augie turns out ok because we see him with an adult Elisa in the credits.

Add to the list of people who have clues/pieces of clues: Alfonsina.

Gabino showed her the tickets. All she chose to see was "Bouvier" and her mind immediately jumped to Estefania instead of Carmina, and she also saw CARMINA's bags packed. If Stef were running away with Rosendo, where are HER packed bags?

But her hatred of Estefania only allowed her to see Stef as the culprit instead of Carmina.

Augie is weak, cowardly, has low self esteem and IMO never truly loved Estefania but regarded her as a trophy. If he loved her, he wouldn't have immediately convicted Estefania of adultery the minute Alfonsina told him her suspicions.

Anon,
maybe the receipt from the travel agency did not have the passenger names. I thought at first it did, but when i rewatched the scene of Rosendo and Gabino, Gabino mentioned the names as he was handing Rosendo the plane tickets (btw, if the car did NOT go on fire and it was raining so hard, where are those tickets? wouldn't that prove who was actually planning to leave? DUH!!!
so Alfonsina, like you said, is CHOSING to believe whatever is supporting her theory/certainty (duh!) that it was Estefania the one with Rosendo... Alfonsina is too stupid and she will suffer greatly for years and years unneccessarily because she did not see what was obvious in front of her eyes, or as we LHDM fans would say ... 'en su jeta!!'

Whew! Finally home and able to comment a little more (I hate being limited to only checking the blog on my phone.)

NM and Marta-I thought the whole "Elisa remains calm while the succubus screeches" scene to also be surreal. I taught in an elementary school for 7 years and little kids just don't remain that calm and at ease when there is something going on...no matter how much they trust the adult they are with. They get agitated. No sweet turning back and hugging mommy. LOL and they definitely don't take "I'll explain later" as well as Elisa did last night.

PLUS on at least two occasions Elisa has stated she does't like tia Carmina (and I suspect she doesn't trust her either) if her mom has locked the woman up and the Orange is screaming...Elisa is not going to be so happy go lucky.

David I love those quotes!!!

Daisynjay I also submit the following to the not quite curse word repertoire: A$$, asp, beech, focker (or flocker, take your pick.) I need them. I curse like a sailor (no offense Cap'n and some of these shows really pith me off and I have to really restrain myself while writing recaps.

Carlos I eagerly await Altair Jarabo, too.

Blue Lass My thoughts are with you tonight. I also love your new picture. I will be changing mine promptly just to be a copy cat. You've been warned. ;-)

R la O I have a question about Ramona la Chinche, expect an e-mail.

Just commenting again for Blue Lass. Diego Velázquez is my all time favorite artist, but I didn't want to be too stalker/creepy and change my profile to one of his works, so I chose one from my next favorite artist: Goya.

:-)

The big reveal (hopefully.)

PS: Doris I was also glad the little burro was safe.

Oooo, ver nice, Sara. Which one are you?

The creepy guys in the shadows.

I meant VERY nice, VERY nice. I am *not* turning into Ricardo Montalban.

Sara - I will await your pondering, introspective question about the ever mind-challenging Ramona the Chinche.

I agree being limited by your phone on comments is hard, but today I got a message that I'd gone over my internet minutes. I didn't even know I had a limit!

Guess I need to call T-Mobile and see about increasing my blog time capabilities.

R la O

Just sent you the e-mail. I am in deep doo doo if I have an internet minute limit. Yikes!

@Sara...so sorry to be getting to this late. I always love your recaps but today has just been crazy and non-stop.

A dreadfully sad episode, but you slipped in some wonderfully funny phrases like "his juicy little orange" and Tia Naranja. And I love that you discreetly cuss like a sailor in these resumens. I have rather colorful language myself, which I have to edit sharply when I'm in church lady role.

David...wonderful quotes.

Elna June...that woman's last memory will be that somebody loved her and cared. Would that all people's last moments would be that way.

I saw little glimpses of this episode but preferred to watch Dancing With The Stars last night, both to enjoy William Levy's style (he was great), but also to avoid this horror. However I did catch Sabine Moussier's scene and agree that she is doing a stellar job playing a reprehensible character.

but today has just been crazy and non-stop.
----
I hope you are finally on "stop" with your feet up and jammies on.

Marta: Thank you for your well wishes. All is well here in DF, just some building structures were damaged and parts of the city lost electric power for a while but, fortunately, there was no loss of life. The city is especially protected for earthquakes after a terrible one in 1985.

This one has now been confirmed at 7.8 on the Richter scale, a higher number than what it was previously thought and lasted around 5 minutes. We have felt more than 10 aftershocks and we are expecting more until tommorrow.

I was okay, I don't really get scared anymore with quakes but my housemates and I will celebrate tonight how nice life is, lol.

Jarocha

Jarocha, I'm so glad to hear that you and your roommates are OK. I think a little celebration is definitely in order! Sometimes the aftershocks are as scary as the original quake.

We're so glad you're okay Jarocha.

Sara...things are still crazy and no jammies yet, but I am sitting down at last and watching Abismo. So sad!

Jarocha,
Thank you so much for checking in. What a day for you.
R la O

Sara, Thank you for the recap of an intensely sad episode. As always your writing soars with wings.

Thanks again everyone. My episode was a picnic at the cenote compared to the horrors Blue Lass had to endure last night.

Does anyone else have trouble understanding Sabine?

comment on tues ep..
man! i lost it last night, had not heard that song in so long..

entre tus manos esta mi vida, Senor.
Entre tus manos pongo mi existir.
hay que morir para vivir.
entre tus manos yo confio mi ser.

so sad to see that noone came to the watch for Estefania while the whole town was there for Rosendo... how are all these people going to feel when they all (those that survive the time jump) realize their mistake...
and lost it again when Elisa hugged the coffin and remembered her mother's smile and comforting words...
