Abismo de pasión #44 5/10/12: No Reservations Allowed for the Passion Pit Smorgasbord
Leftovers: That part where Horacio and Flor do not end up in a mad clinch, but Enrique and Flor do. Damian discovers them and blows his stack.
Steamed Stud Muffin: Steam one Damian over a full boil until he can absorb no more lies.
“Pardon me for interrupting!” Damian lets Flor have it, he couldn’t believe he blamed himself for her accident. Enrique starts to stick up for her and Dam nearly pounds his face into the wall. “Not a word! Not from you either Florencia!”
Flor follows Dam into the house as fast as her little spiked heels will carry her. She just wants to explain, Enrique forced himself upon her. Dam calls bull***t on her. He spoke to Kenia and knows Flor lied about everything. “WE are over for good. Now get out of my life!” Alfonsina and Guido catch this last bit, and when they ask what’s going on Dam just tells them to ask HER.
Now papa Guido’s all over Flor’s case. Where was her head? Flor admits everything is all her fault. Pops tells her not to count on him for help this time. Damian had every right to tell her to go to the devil. Sheesh!
Full of Beans: Cover dried beans with water and simmer until tender. Add Epazote to avoid flatulence and hot air.
Over at Casa Chisme Enrique gripes to Sabrina that Flor will
never forgive him, not to mention he’s broke. Not necessarily, she observes, maybe now the door will be wide open for him. Speaking of doors Begoña comes through theirs, what are the niños doing at home? “My job at La Anita is over,” says Enrique, “Sit down mom. Damian’s going to fire me.” Begoña freaks at her own family’s chisme. I wonder, will she get on the phone or give it a rest for once?
Braised Asshat: Place one Augusto in the slow-cooker with one plump tomato. (Habaneros optional.) Set to high and simmer until the saxophones play.
Well we sure didn’t have to wait long to see the Assgusto/Kenia connection. Gael proudly shows her the fields while Assgusto ogles nearby. She loves how Gael is so passionate about los campos and apologizes for what she did. She’d like to meet Elisa and apologize directly to her. Assgusto and his coco frío enter the scene. Kenia gives him a delightful introductory kiss and explains it’s all her fault that Gael is late. Assgusto is mesmerised but manages to introduce himself. When Kenia hears he is Elisa’s father she wrangles an invitation to dinner so she can meet Elisa. She mentions something about Ingrid his mama and then gives Assgusto another kiss and hug goodbye. See ya later!
Assgusto asks Gael what was she talking about? Gael reveals that a couple of days ago he discovered his mother is alive. He asks Assgusto if he knows anything about Ingrid Navarro. Nope, the name doesn’t mean anything to him, but Gael can count on him for any help he needs. He’s glad that Gael and Kenia (drool) are coming over.
Alfonsina Omelette: Take one Fina and crack her into a bowl. Add the bitter truth and whisk. Pour into a hot pan and stir gently until her forehead is set.
Dam is in his room unpacking and cooling down. Fina comes in and demands to know what happened. Dam says he ran into Kenia (who’s back in town) who told him about Flor’s fake pregnancy plot, then he just found Flor mouth-kissing Enrique Tovar at the stables! He makes the connection and accuses Fina of being complicit in the pregnancy plot. “Are you saying you knew nothing about the fake pregnancy?” Mom can’t answer. “Fine, then I’ll assume you plotted with Florencia all this time.”
Fina tries to defend herself without actually lying but Dam will have none of it. He heard she sent Flor’s x-rays to Merida for analysis. Well sure, she says, and they said there was nothing physically wrong with her. But she didn’t want to get between Flor and Dam and she sure didn’t want to keep Dam from going to the DF. He asks her how many other things has she hidden from him? She can’t believe he’s blaming her for what happened with Flor. “I”m not blaming you mom, I just don’t trust you. I don’t trust anyone.”
TranquiliTea: Place dried chamomile, mint and lemon balm in a teapot, pour hot water over and steep for three minutes. Sip and visualize all will be right with the world.
Ramona visits Padre to get the chisme about Ingrid. Padre says it’s true, Gael’s mother is back in town, “risen from the dead”. But he suspects there is something else bothering Ramona. He suspects she fears the same thing will happen to Paloma, that Gabino will decide to tell her he’s her father. He advises Ramona to talk to Paloma but Ramona asks how can she tell her nieta that her father is a bastard (malnacido). Padre says she’s got a right to know and if Ramona doesn’t tell her Paloma will feel resentful. And believe him, he knows what he’s talking about.
Turkey Surprise: Clean one turkey and dress it well. Place in oven and try to forget about it until dinner.
Later that evening Assgusto, acting practically normal, brings Gael home and instructs a delighted Lolita to set two more places. Elisa is also delighted, all those years of working for them and it’s the first time dad has invited Gael to dinner. (Gael’s face is priceless.)
Elisa and Gael talk about how he is dealing with Ingrid. Gael says she doesn’t mean anything to him. He thanks Padre Lupe for who he (Gael) is. He is grateful to Elisa for being able to share his problems with her. He admits that Damian told him he should fight for Elisa’s love. She doesn’t look exactly thrilled.
Big Fish to Fry Tacos: Take the last big fish and fry it. Add just enough information to be dangerous. Wrap in soft tortillas and serve to the Big Cheese. Wait for your tip but watch your back.
Over at the ProCeSaDora Maru tells Ingrid that Damian won’t be coming back to work, he’s returning to the DF. Didn’t Gabino tell her? Ingrid is annoyed, he didn’t tell her anything and this news affects her big plans. GABINO slides in and wants to walk her home but Ingrid will have none of it. She’s got somewhere to go. GABINO pouts. Maru gloats.
Ingrid heads over to Hacienda Harangue-O to see Dam and annoy Fina. Fina is even more annoyed to find out she works at La ProCesADora. Ingrid turns on the water works and tells Damian she needs to talk to him about her baby she abandoned many years ago in La Ermita. “Gael es mi hijo and you would be very surprised to learn who his father is.” Fina thinks she and Ingrid should take it offline. Nopis, Ingrid heard Damian is leaving and she needs to talk to him NOW. Fina steps in for one last, desperate lob, “Lady, rest assured we will do whatever we can to help you. Get it?”
Ingrid tells Dam that Gael knows she is his mother but wants to know nothing about her. That’s why she’s here to beg Damian to help her get close to Gael. “And Gael’s papa, do I know him?” Dam asks, “does he live here?” Ingrid says the father’s name is well-known and loved by all the people of La Ermita. She promised she would never identify him and it's better for everyone, especially Gael, if she keeps it zipped.
After Ingrid leaves Fina asks if she revealed who is Gael’s father. No, but why does Fina suddenly care about what happens to Gael?
Toxic Citrus Punch: Squeeze one Tangel-Ho until she squeals. Squeeze some more.
Over at Casa Castration (thanks Pasofino!) the Blood Orange is on her muletas whining because Assgusto ignores her and doesn’t care that she is injured. She’s also annoyed that the orphan is invited to dinner. She thinks this dinner is all very odd. The last time they had guests was when Stef invited Rosendo and Alfonsina, remember? That was the night she told him his wife and Rosendo...eran amantes! (Holy crap, they haven’t had guests since then? Not even Lucio and Blanca?) Saved by the bell!
Enter Kenia. “And who is this?” demands Agent Orange. Assgusto introduces Kenia, Gael’s friend. Carmina snorts in anger, “I am Carmina, Assgusto’s bitchy, rude and orange wife.” She stomps her muletas for emphasis and refuses to shake Kenia’s hand. Assgusto literally drools as Kenia leaves the room to join Gael. Orangina knows! Sweet.
Kenia joins Gael and Elisa. Elisa blasts Kenia for her role in Flor’s fake pregnancy. Kenia immediately owns up and apologizes. She didn’t know Elisa and believed what everyone says. “Good that you admit the truth,” snaps Elisa, “but I don’t want you in my house and we’re not going to be friends.” Kenia wants to talk to Elisa alone. She convinces Elisa that Flor and her uncle are a couple of manipulators and they completely hoodwinked Kenia. The most important thing is that Damian knows the truth and it would be logical for him to dump Florencia.
Refritos: Take those beans from earlier, fry and mash like crazy until its too late.
Doc Tovar and Begoña are arguing really loudly in his office about Enrique. Paloma doesn’t even need to press her ear to the door. Begoña tells him what happened with Flor and Enriquito. I think she is more worried about her friendship with Alfonsina than Enrique’s job or anything else. Doc says it’s half Flor’s fault and this sets Begoña to shrieking again.
Doc visits Enrique in his room to get the chisme straight from the horse’s mouth. He tells his son he doesn’t think this girl is worth the trouble. Enrique is confused and he feels bad for making problems for Flor. Dad advises that maybe he did Damian a favor. Sometimes women take advantage and the worst of it is men find out too late. He speaks from experience.
Habanero Salsa de la Casa: Take one plump, luscious tomato, add one young habanera pepper and one faithful clove of garlic, then add the grated, dried up old rind of one orange; grind in a molcajete until the orange disappears. Add fresh herbs before serving.
Elisa has forgiven Kenia and they are all seated for what promises to be a very interesting meal. Elisa is amazed by Assgusto’s good manners. Kenia asks for more salsa and Orangina just glares at her. Assgusto grabs the salsa and spoons it onto Kenia’s plate for her. Orangina is clearly annoyed and Elisa is clearly amused. Elisa and Gael talk about their plans for Las Tierras but they need lots of money. Kenia is interested. Orangina is annoyed. Saved by the bell!
It’s Paloma who needs to talk to Elisa in private. Assgusto notes they are just about done with dinner (doesn’t look like it to me) but Paloma is welcome to join them for coffee. “No!” interjects Orangina. “Yes!” interjects Elisa reveling in Orangina’s discomfort, “Join us.” Orangina is miffed and excuses herself, the meal doesn’t agree with her. Paloma asks Elisa what’s going on? Assgusto and Kenia make eyes at each other and Elisa whispers she’ll tell Paloma later.
Hot Mess Coleslaw: Grate cabbage and habaneros. Squeeze fresh lime over. Sprinkle with cilantro and serve with everything.
Flor begs Fina to help her. Fina scoffs, she told Flor to behave better than Elisa and now look at her, she’s worse than Elisa. She understands exactly why Dam told Flor to go to the devil and the best thing would be for Florencia to return to Mexico City. Fina kicks Flor out, she’s got her own problems to deal with.
Dam visits Padre to report he knows about Ingrid. Padre doesn’t understand why Ingrid approached Damian. Dam asks does Padre know who Gael’s father is? Padre says as a priest he cannot reveal this information. Dam also reports Flor is not the woman he thought and he’s decided to stay in La Ermita. Padre is excited to hear that Dam plans to look for Elisa tomorrow.
Taza de Chocolate: Add one tablet Mexican chocolate to 3 cups milk (or almond milk). Heat and whisk with molinillo until frothy. Add dash of Kahlua. Pour into two mugs and top with whipped cream for Lolita and Elisa to enjoy. Now leave them alone.
The young people say goodbye without Paloma getting to tell Elisa why she stopped by. It’s late so Gael agrees to walk Paloma home. Paloma admits Elisa told her about Ingrid.
Elisa smiles and watches from her window as they ride away on Gael’s horse. Such a handsome couple, she tells Lolita. Elisa assures Lolita that she loves Gael like a brother. She asks Lolita if Kenia is interested in Gael. Lolita didn’t see any flirting, there was something else between them. Elisa reports that it was Kenia who helped Flor, and she apologized to Elisa. They giggle at how pithed off Tia Orangina was with all Elisa’s friends at dinner. And there was something else going on with her too.
GERD: Eat one delicious meal prepared by Lolita. Go to bed and look at Carmina.
Assgusto tells Carmina she was pretty obvious at dinner. Orangina hisses it was Elisa’s low-class friends. It’s too bad she can’t find friends of her own ilk. Assgusto tells her not to be such a snob. Estefania was never like that. (Man, these two really know how to push each other’s buttons!) Orangina explodes, of course not, she is very different from Stef! She doesn’t jump on the first man who comes into their house. (Erm, yes you do.) She accuses him of making eyes at Kenia. It was because of her that he invited them to dinner, right? How many years has it been since he dressed for dinner? He said Gael is going through difficulties and that’s why they were invited to dinner. She hobbles out in a fury to sleep in the spare room.
Breakfast Humble Pie: Take the heart and manly bits of one hot stallion, add one Damian and fry in a pan until the stallion parts are shriveled. Top with pastry and bake until the workers cheer. Serve with scrambled huevos and a smile.
Gabino strides into work, at last things will be back to normal! “Not so fast,” smirks Maru. Damian strides in behind and wishes them good morning. Maru tells him Don Lucio is waiting in his office.
Lucio says he was surprised to hear Dam is staying. Dam says he called Lucio because he is ready to put together a contract between Los Arango and Elisa. Lucio isn’t sure that Elisa will agree to it. Dam is sure he can convince Elisa.
Holy Guacamole: Mix one roasted habanera with four avocados. Stand back.
Gael is at Casa Castration to meet Elisa. Lolita tells him she was waiting for Don Lucio but when he didn’t show up she left sola. Just then Elisa arrives home and is in a state because again no loans and she is ready to plant las tierras NOW.
Elisa and Gael ride together to las tierras. She stomps around the fields ripping out old habaneros and crying that she wants to plant. Gael grabs her and promises to help. Everything will turn out, she’ll see. She cries on his shoulder and I swear I hear a bird of prey screeching in the background. Yikes! Up rides Damian and he glares at what he sees. Dude, it’s your own fault for jerking Elisa around and telling Gael to go for it.
Avances: Paloma tells Elisa about Flor and Enrique. Damian tells Padre he’s making a play for Elisa. Gael and Damian butt heads.
Labels: abismo
What a great recap! I love your recipes for drama. They were inspired.
I've got to agree, Damian has nothing to be upset about with. He is just pissed brcaused he was hoodwinked by Flo, and, as he told his mother he doesn't trust anybody.
The rest of the novels may be about sad Damian working through his trust issues. Zepeda is really bring it as the strong but very wounded young man.
Bravo to you,Sylvia for a wonderful and creative recap . I DO love your work.
EJ
This was a veritable "feast" of faces last night. Watching the reactions of the actors who were NOT talking was so enjoyable last night. Of course, Mark T. is the master. The looks in the fields he kept giving Assgusto were priceless, like "who are you and where did my boss go?" And Alfi when Irritating showed up - you could almost see the blood vessels ready to burst. And then the dinner...oh that dinner.
As for Guppy face, yikes. Yeah, guess who's coming for dinner dear? A sweet, nubile young thing that makes me grin like a clown, and give everyone a creepy, giggly feeling. That was one of the beast dinners ever!
I too was a little miffed at Dam's reaction to seeing Gael and Elisa. Ah, didn't you, just the day before, tell Gael to go for it with her? Where I'm getting interested is how Dam NOT going to wind up with Elisa at this point since right now he's free, Elisa is all about him and Flo has been kicked to the curb. ( Even her own father won't help her? Ouch! Enter Unkapunk?)
Since this goofy acting Assgusto is actually funny to watch and it's yanking Guppy's chain so much, the anvil I wished on him yesterday can hover still for awhile. However, the one over Irritating needs to fall. right.now. Anyone want to help me go find that bus/truck used in Teresa and give her another good back flip? I want her and her little tendrils GONE.
TGIF!
I smiled and laughed delightedly throughout. Your concoctions simmered and stewed. "veritable plethora of Passion Pit provender" was marvelous. I howled at all of your recipes but particularly "Breakfast Humble Pie: Take the heart and manly bits of one hot stallion, add one Damian and fry in a pan until the stallion parts are shriveled..."
Best line: "Later that evening Assgusto, acting practically normal" - marvelous.
"Gabino pouts and Maru gloats" was priceless as was the smirk when Gabino slunk out, tail between his legs. Miss Maru doesn't miss a trick. Love her.
I know that Augusto's lascivious behavior is reprehensible. But, how wonderful was it to see Orangina's jealousy! Priceless.
daisy, you were spot on - watching Gael's face in the field wondering who the hell Auggie was and the expressions round the dinner table were priceless.
Here's hoping for more dinner parties soon. Although it would be hard to top this one! Great fun.
Sylvia, thank you for making Friday even better. Again, this was perfection.
Diana
I loved that dinner. Yes, everyone's facial expressions were priceless, and I was grinning just like Elisa to see how ticked off Carmeany was getting. Ha!
Daisynjay- I don't want Ingrid gone just yet, until she reveals to someone (who is a good person and not bound by confessional secrets) that Rosie is Gael's papa. Because Alfie and Lupe aren't telling.
Kenia's presence has really shaken things up. It was wonderful to see Augie being so goofy. I know I should be creeped out by it, since he is so much older, but I wasn't.
I agree with you all that Damian can't be ticked off since he has been so wishy washy, and he told Gael to go for it. Anyway, that hug was about calming/comforting Elisa, not making a play for her.
I was very happy to see him let his rage loose on Flor and Alfie. What's poor little Flor going to do now?
I started to note down favorites....like "as fast as her little spiked heels will carry her" but then I was just swept away by enjoying the recap and read through it like I was gobbling up the most exquisite dessert.
Bravo Amiga! You cooked up one helluva recap. Delicious from start to finish. (burp)
That was Incredible!! My fav recipes were of course braised Asshat, Alfonsina omelett, turkey surprise and habanero salsa de la casa… but actually the entire recap was delicious!
Those scenes at the Castanon table were SOOOO fun to watch!!
Totally agree with all of you, Dam is just getting what his wishy-washy behavior set up for him…
And daisynjay, ITA 1000% on
This was a veritable "feast" of faces last night.
And then the looks and stares and ‘who is this?’ continued on at the house (AWESOME stare by Carmina as Augusto drooled watching Kenya walk toward the kitchen) … nothing like giving her a bit of her own soup that she has poured on others for so long… the Kenya appearance AND Augusto’s attitude toward her really shook her world, didn’t it?
Cocos Frios… Guppy Face… ROFLOL!! You guys rock!
Definitely a good portion of the villains in this novela had a bad day (Flo, Carmina and Gabino mainly)
And you know how much I enjoy cooking (and eating) traditional Mexican haute-cuisine :-) . Hard to pick a fave recipe, as they were all brilliant, but Holy Guacamole had me squealing.
This had me remembering "Like Water for Chocolate". A heartfelt thanks!
The Castañon dinner scene had hubby and me rolling in delighted laughter last night. It was wonderful! Too bad Assgusto is an old lech, but have we ever seen him smile so much? I don't even remember him smiling before. He was having a great time admiring the young beauties (including Paloma) and was very gentlemanly about it LOL!
dinner was the centerpiece of this episode. Great work Sylvia, thanks.
The "chemistry" between Kenia and Augusto will be strange if there is any, because of their age difference, but watching Carmina squirm was as good as eating a big serving of tres leches cake, delicious down to the last bite. Seeing Augusto lovingly pass the salsa was hilarious! I was proud of his reluctant approval of the habanero project even with his one caveat, "I don't think it will work." (My husband and I got that comment from both sides of our family in the early days, we just stopped telling them anything!) Anyway, there is never a dull moment in this novela.
I was so MAD that Lucio asked Damian for his help, she asked him not to! I really wanted to see Elisa do this on her own, without Arango money, booooo Lucio!
Doesn't Gael know and like "Don Augusto?" I seem to remember Gael giving Don A a hearty greeting several times!
Fun episode and super fun comments already!
I'm wondering if Damian is going to think that either the Padre or Don Lucio is Gael's father. Maybe Auggie, but I'm not sure if he is well-liked and respected.
Yola
Sandy,
absolutely! i remember Augusto treating young Gael like equal with Damian at the tree when they had the dinner party and even arguing with Alfie about him.
also when grown up Gael was talkign to Padre Loopy about Augusto with admiration remembering the way Augusto used to be, when we first had the time jump. also Gael calling Augusto 'jefazo!'... all of these show that Gael is really fond of Augusto, regardless of the way he knows Augusto has treated Elisa.
My one disappointment was Guido's lack of s support and downright hostility toward Flo. Yes, she's been a naughty girl but you're her dad and her last refuge. Shame on you. Even Alfonsina is too good for you.
Of course the dinner was the high point. It reminded me of those memorable meals in MEPS.
I thought the meeting between Lupe and Ramona was charming. It had a sweet ecumenical feel about it.
I was so glad to see Augusto smile and it seems that most here are happy to see him out of that blue funk... if only for the night. He was every bit the gentleman not the least bit inappropriate and yet we could all see that he was charmed by Kenia... especially Carmina.
I only hope that Kenia does not try to take advantage of that. So far I'm also charmed but I'm afraid that she has the instincts of an opportunistic predator and right now our Augusto is very vulnerable and fragile.
Carlos
Carlos
I thought the meeting between Lupe and Ramona was charming. It had a sweet ecumenical feel about it.
me too... since Ramona and Loopy both have that in common, the child they raised had to be lied to to shield them from the pain of the kind of natural parent they had (Gael's mom and Paloma's dad). and they both know that the grown ups would feel resentment for having been lied to by the people they trust the most...
Raquel Montero and Rene Casados were wonderful together in that scene.
Carlos, so glad you've upgraded our drinks! I kinda knew you would.
When or how did we find out that Gabino is Paloma's father?
Also - Kenia knows she is Gael's sister -- mabe she'll be the one to reveal the name of his daddy.
Carlos, Kenia is definitely an opportunist, however she has a predilection for older men. Maybe she really does like Don Augusto?
Diana, Orangina's face was the best entertainment from the moment Augusto walked through the door to Paloma's entrance. The only one who was having a better time than us was Elisa.
EJ and daisynjay, yep Damian kind of set himself up for his big disappointment at the end. But really, he has been gone for years while Elisa and Gael have been best buds. He needs to take a chill pill.
Audrey, I admit I was thinking of you while I was writing the recap. I knew you would have your own foodie interpretations of what was going on.
JudyB, (burp), LOL!! Your comments are always fun.
Marta, "nothing like giving her a bit of her own soup that she has poured on others for so long… the Kenya appearance AND Augusto’s attitude toward her really shook her world, didn’t it?" Tell it sister. Carmina's awesome face when Augusto drooled after Kenia was amazing. Sabine is such a good actress, she didn't even look attractive, just suddenly old and ugly. It was amazing.
Doris, amiga, thanks for checking in.
Yola, like you I'm dying to know who Damian *thinks* is Gael's papa. Will Rosendo even enter his mind?
Pasofino, we've known for a while that Gabino is Paloma's father. Does Kenia know the identity of Gael's daddy or has Ingrid kept it a secret from her?
Sandy in TN, I'm not so mad at Lucio for going to Damian for help. He is more pragmatic and experienced than Elisa and probably has learned that "pride goeth before the fall". It would be a business arrangement that would benefit both parties. However after last night I'm thinking Kenia might ante up some backing if she has any money left.
Fina paid Kenia to get out of town. Now Kenia is back. How will Fina feel about that? Not too happy I'm thinking.
Even Zepeda is showing a side of himself that I have never seen before. I would have to think that having actors of the caliber of Rene and Raquel on this TN makes the others work even harder.
I liked Elisa'a looks at the dinner table when she saw her Tia clearly upset over Kenya (Kenia?.)
I don't think the age difference should be an issue between Kenia and Assgusto. If anything, it will be mutually complimentary and might even help Assgusto, but his one night of smiles does not wipe away the years of what he has done to Elisa. It's curious how people are always willing to cut abusers so much slack.
Even though Rosendo is gone, he is becoming more interesting to me and what his playing around has to say about his early relationship with Alfonsina. Rosendo is spoken of in quasi-revered tones, but the fact that he chose and was ready to throw his life away for Carmina tells me that all was not right in his brain (not to mention his world).
Thank you for your recap.
Kenia is a free-spirited grifter. She was supposed to leave, but couldn't resist the opportunity to have some fun and get to know her big brother better.
Guido learned Florencia is a little trickster.
Carmina learned Augie has the hots for Kenia.
Damian learned Ingrid is Gael's mother.
Gabino learned Damian ain't going nowheres.
Begoña learns Quickie was kissing on Florencia & will probably lose his job.
Edmundo learned Begoña is more concerned about the state of her friendship with Alfonsina than the emotional state of her son.
Paloma learned the whole truth about Florencia.
We learned Casa Castration hasn't had any dinner guests in over 15 years.
Damian learned Gael took him up on his suggestion to go after Elisa.
OBSERVATION #1:
Carmina complained about Elisa's low class friends and why can't she find somebody of her class. Well, OJ, Elisa can't find any friends of her own class b/c you and Alfonsina have spread so many rumors that nobody of her class will hang out with her. So if Elisa is "low class" now, she would be hanging with friends of her own "ilk."
OBSERVATION 2:
Carmina expected Augusto to sleep with her I guess to get his mind off of Kenia, but had she even washed Paolo's juices off of her?
Anon, I couldn't agree more about the level of acting in this one. Tacher's face has an incredible range of emotion, he's so enjoyable to watch. I, too, have never enjoyed Zepeda as much as in Abismo.
Interesting comment about people cutting abusers so much slack. Carmina is also quite abusive. She and Augusto have an unhealthy and dependent relationship. That is what Rosendo would have run away to, out of the frying pan (Fina) and into the fire of hell (Carmina).
Ah, Anon207 I was waiting for your list. Thank you. I also noticed that Carmina was wearing the same dress as when she "hooked up" with Paolo. Who knows about her, she's a skank and the last person who should be toffee-nosed.
You, Sylvia, are the cherry on the whipped cream, on the dessert of this excellent recap.
I wonder if Assgu is reminded of a young Estefania by Kenia. Similar eyes, similar presentation. What a difference from Naran-ho.
Rosemary la Otra
Pasofino - Though Kenia has been a grifter, I think she really wants to get to know her brother. Remember Ingrid has been her only family to date and the former taught the latter all of her wonderful habits. And though Gael didn't know her after rescuing her he came to visit. In wanting to please him, I think/hope she could become a good person.
Carlos though Guido let you down, he has been under a great deal of duress and finding out his daughter is acting almost exactly like his good-for-nothing (but possibly to look at) brother must have been quite a shock. I'm sure he'll come around soon.
Kenia is YOUNGER than Elisa. Isn't she still just 17?
"I wonder if Assgu is reminded of a young Estefania by Kenia. Similar eyes, similar presentation. What a difference from Naran-ho."
Well, they did say Estefania was MUCH younger than Augusto.
Guido:
Guido has been under severe financial problems for a while, and had to get substantial financial help from Alfonsina. Now he finds out his daughter has betrayed Alfonsina's son, and who knows, Alfonsina COULD put a stop payment on that check or demand the money back, leading Guido to certain financial ruin.
Also, with the knowledge that the Landuccis are BROKE, a marriage between Florencia & Damian may not be so attractive to Alfonsina as before.
What makes it all the more eye-popping is to think he's been this miserable dredge for close to 15 years. I think Elisa was just happy to see him stick it to Guppy more than be astounded that he could turn on the charm so quickly over some new young girl they all just met. I was waiting for someone to offer to have her move in. Might actually be good for Elisa, and just make Guppy implode. I say take advantage of the possibilities. That jerkwad owes Elisa, and even Gael, some recompense for his years of verbal abuse.
And Carlos, I agree with Karen. I think Queeddddoo reacted the way he did because he has a lot at stake to maintain good terms with Alfi being she just bailed him out with the money he needed. Sort of "Rock, meet Hard Place". Flo's antics had far greater repercussions than she realized.
And as to the "low class" friends--what "high class" folks are then in town? Sort of assumed it was Alfi/Rosendo as the top dog, and she's not allowed to associate with Dam. That would maybe leave the Tovar's. Yeah, real classy ( though I love the Doc.) I'm adjusting my Emilia beanie on that accusation.
You writers are so entertaining, I look forward to the recaps far more than the telenovela itself.
What a sweetheart you are Sylvia! Yep, you absolutely made my day! And here I have been lately watching videos (in Spanish) of Guatemalans preparing the famous Pipián Verde sauce, getting ready to try it myself. Spanish cooking videos on YouTube are another great way to practice/learn Spanish.
Have you seen the fabulous Mexican movie "Like Water for Chocolate?". If not, you owe yourself the treat.
Hugs and kisses
Audrey
Yes, you nailed it!
Carlos, I can understand your defense of Flo (you are truly gallant) but am truly puzzled by your defense of Auggie! :) But, he didn't leer or drool outright so I guess I can cut him some slack. I love your comments though - as usual you made me laugh!
Diana
R la O, thanks to you too for mentioning "Like Water for Chocolate". Such a great story, no?
Karen and others, I agree that our boy Guido will come around. He seems like an honorable person. His biggest mistake is probably spoiling Florencia too much. She doesn't actually seem motivated by money, but maybe she would be if she didn't have any.
Anon207, yep, when we first met Kenia she was 17. She probably still is.
Anon 12:42, thank you!
I am still amazed that Sabine can go from stunning to horrifying by changing her expression. She really did look like a hag when Kenia showed up.
But my favorite scene by far was between Padre Lupe and Ramona. He was gently teasing her about her vaunted intuition and of course, showing a bit of intuitive flair himself in sussing out her concerns. Her expressions as he talked, his as she stumbled through her concerns...Pure delight. I think these actors are doing an excellent job and I'm sure the directors and writers on this gig have a lot to do with that also.
Since Carlos has formed an Augusto support group, I think Cynderella should organize a Gabino support group as well. Our homicidal greaser has been getting the brush-off lately. Carmina and Alfonsina, he's used to, but I think Ingrid's rejection is really bruising his tender feelings.
I haven't seen the episode yet, of course...just cannot keep up. Maybe once UFCS ends... but the recaps make my day.
Kenia is a grifter but I think is longing for love and acceptance on all burners so her further association with Gael might give her a sense of family in the end. She is also sharp as a tack and may help Gael get the message that Damian is going to devour his beloved Elisa when Dam gets over the momentary snit that Elisa didn't wait nun like for him to throw away Flor.
It will be interesting to see if Guido's need for money make him plot with Flor for Damian's forgiveness or if he will just go after Alfina Preena directly.
Wasn't it odd that Preena let Ingrate and DumDam talk alone. All these scenes were played so well and written so well in this episode.
I loved the Ramona and PadreLupe scene such mutual integrity and unspoken trust. It had a warm dignity to it.
Fabulous work Cap'n. You were ablaze with the plot-asado adding the perfect spices.
Fina paid Kenya, now Kenya is back causing trouble and Fina is not a happy camper..
I am wondering too what Fina’s countermove will be… Kenya better start running.
Anon, NICE comments… just the things I have been thinking since last night’s ep.
Mark T and Rene C DEFINITELY have not let me down. I had SKY HIGH hopes for those two on screen together and they sure have shot their chemistry together right up to Saturn.
The word-less acting by Mark is also off the scale.
I also have always believed that good actors make each other even better and they also motivate other actors to bring out the best in them as well… so this novela definitely has that vibe going esp with David Z. I agree with you, he did not move me in any prev work but here he is really bringing it.
How people cut abusers slack… I guess in my case Augusto won me over (how he treated the kids and his wife before the time jump… EXCEPT his jealousy over Stefie just going out the door…) so by the time we started watching his abusive behavior toward Elisa (mostly triggered by Orange-Ho’s antics and constant poking) I had already decided to cut him some slack… still laughing at a vision of him and ‘coco frio’…
Rosendo is another one I would like to cut slack for, but when I think that he was ready to give up on not only his townspeople (workers at La Anita) but HIS SON, then I have a MAJOR problem with him, not even counting his relationship with Gael and why Gael had to grow up thinking he was an ‘orphan’ when he wasn’t… it was in Rosendo’s hands, any way we slice it.
Karen, I totally agree on Kenya, she just needed someone who could show her what a ‘good’ relative and brotherly love could be about… and she is definitely thirsty/eager to find out and ‘have some’. And I too think she could become a really good person, if given the chance and the right people around her.
I think Kenia is really a very sweet girl, considering that not only has Ingrid been a lousy role-model, she has also treated her daughter with contemptuous indifference.
Karamy
Kenia is a grifter but I think is longing for love and acceptance on all burners so her further association with Gael might give her a sense of family in the end.
Pasofino's 'free-spirited grifter' was very good too... I like Kenya actually, she did a lot of wrong in the beginning because she needed to learn the lesson of not judging someone just by what others say about them. get to know them first and DEFINITELY don't participate in that type or scheme before you really get to know who is who and what they are like.
Yes, I was a little taken aback when I read that Gabino was spoken of as Paloma's dad. I thought they had hinted at it, but then given the way he treats her, I assumed it couldn't be. I was quite surprised they just came out with it like that.
Has anyone else noticed Mark T's soft kissable lips?
Mark T's soft kissable lips... well, that is one way they have been called... i like to think it is one of the signature features of Mark T. like if they had an entertainment magazine game of 'whose are those lips' and his were in there i would tell right off the bat whose they are... but then again David Z has noticeable ears too.. Angelique has the barbie doll porcelain cheek bones... so everyone has their 'signature feature'. lol
Nothing new to add except that there will be major fallout when Paloma finds out Gabino is her sperm donor and I am wondering what else there is to know about her mother.
Mark T's lips are very noticeable and not his best feature. They make him look indecisive. And they have nothing to do with how they are used. Give me Jorge Salinas any day of the week.
She came to town to get money out of Paolo, but that's only because Paolo knocked her up & it was his responsibility to pay child support.
She didn't ask Alfonsina to give her a check to go away, Alfonsina took it upon herself to give her a check and go away.
Yes, she masterminded the pee stunt but that was to get in good with Florencia so she could get at Paolo.
Yeah, she's spending her money on cars and fancy hotel rooms but what 17 year old WOULDN'T if they got a big windfall?
She seems to genuinely like Gael and Augusto. I don't think she's cozying up to Gael to get part of the Arango $ and I don't think she's cozying up to Augusto to get at his money.
I don't see her as a grifter, but even if she was, look at who her mother is. You can't expect to grow up to be a stand up citizen with a mother like that.
Kenia really doesn't have anything more to do with the Landucci bunch: the baby is gone, she knows Paolo is scum & she and Florencia never were friends.
Marta, I was also thinking about Paula H. She would love this stuff.
Thanks to all the rest of you who came out of lurkdom to comment. There is a lot of subject matter to discuss with this telenovela for those who care to. For those who don't...well just sit back and enjoy the show and the recap.
I will be blasting off for the weekend and probably won't be able to check back in until Sunday (unless I can sneak onto someone's wi-fi). I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!
EJ,
The rest of the novela may be about sad Damian working through his trust issues.
you might be onto something really true and very probable there, sister...
The rest of the novela might VERY WELL be about that, at least where the character of Damian is concerned.
He certainly has not been able to build lots of trust since he was FORCED/SHIPPED away to grow up totally isolated from his best friends and family (except for Fina's periodical visits). Remember, not only his mother took him away from the only world he knew, but he learned that his dad was abandoning him and his family for another woman who was not his mother... (as much as he knew his mother was no princess, she was his mother and this was his only dad walking away from them). To a child like that they can't help but think THEY are responsible for that decision from his dad.
And now he has been given a blow that will prevent him from trusting his own mother again.
So he does have to heal those wounds and learn to trust others again all over.
now, that is starting me on the deep character analysis we used to do with the CS'93 and BettylaFea forums...
Paula H would have a FIELD DAY with the discussions about the feudalism pattern relationships here..
The scene between Ramona and the Padre was exceptional, if for nothing else its maturity. Who could dislike either of them.
Guido's reaction to Florencia's behavior was to be expected. Daughters seem to know when you really don't need for them to misbehave and that's when they pull the worst.
Carmina, la Basura Naranja, was over the top disgusting last night. Sitting at the dinner table, wearing the same dress she'd worn to her Screw du Jour, treating guests w/ hostility was too much. The crutches seem extraneous to the story line, so I wonder if the actriz had bunion surgery or some such. Don't really care.
I disagree with those of you who insist that Damian should work through his "trust issues." That mindset will serve him well surrounded as he is by viboras.
Thanks again, Sylvia! In lieu of the golden chariot, could we set a tub of ice and Budweiser on the tailgate of my Ford Ranger and fire up the grill?
I am really knocked out by Zepeda's performance here. He is playing Damian as somewhat stoic and very sad, but with a sweet heart. That is not an easy combo to pull off and I find it believable in him.
As you said, imagine a sensitive kid abandoned by his father and then rejected (shipped off to another COUNTRY for heaven's sakes!for 15 years by his Mother. He is bound to have trust issues, and now Florencia has just exacerbated those.
Sylvia: I have got to say, I just re-read the recap and, woman, you are so GOOD. Thanks for capturing the food-mood and the felt-mood of the only dinner party at Casa Castañon in some 15 years. I feel like I was a fly on the wall enjoying the festivities and laughing at Carmina's discomfiture.
Wait, do flies laugh? You know what I mean.
EJ
Gael and Elisa are forgiving but Paloma seems to have her doubts calling her "la tal Kenia" but then of course she is deeply invested emotionally in Gael and may see her as just one more competitor.
Kenia wasn't exactly honest with Elisa, telling her that the throwdown urine was all Flo's idea.
Carlos
I just want to say that on the Augusto-Kenia thing. Ewww!?! She's underage, or just barely of age. Paolo was in trouble for knocking up a minor. Augusto is older than Paolo. And he's icky. This is just gross and I'll be really mad if they go there.
Before I say anything else, let me say this: ROFLMAO!! Agent HOrange using the argument that she doesn't sleep with every man who comes in the house = FAIL. I'll bet she even surprised herself with that one. ahahahaha
Princess Pea sure is cooked. Stick a skewer in her because she is so done. She has crashed and burned so many times this week, she should be embarrassed to still be in Ermitaville. I would have been out of town on the first thing smokin' to escape the humiliation of it all. LOL!
Well, now that he's grown up and he can, Dah-mi-yang seems to have no trouble telling mommy where to get off. Good for him.
Lord have mercy. Kenia seems to be the best thing that's happened to Augie in a long time. The other day I was conflicted thinking where in the world the writers were going with the cenote bit, but I have to admit that I had some fun with those two in this episode. I thought I would be creeped out because he'd be stalking her and ogling her from behind stuff and trying to find ways to rub against the girl and convince her to endure his company... but no. None of that's happening.
It's more like Augie is enchanted by the fact that something/someone has actually made him see color and smell the roses again. That there is more than blackness and anger and misery (though he brought a hell of a lot of that on himself). He was actually nice to people, even Elisa. The mofo was SMILING. Cleaned himself up. Lost some of that slack jaw (except for when he had to be alone with Agent HOrange LOL). He was a gentleman with Kenia, and how could he not be smitten with her flashing those gorgeous Estefy-colored eyes and giving him innocent hugs? LOL! Even the producer kept the incidental music lighthearted and fun, and Elisa and Gael's reactions to Kenia and Augie's silliness were fun, which pretty much says this isn't intended to be a creepy storyline, rather something that brings change to the character. I do wish they weren't so May-September in age, but that's as common as the cold these days, even the opposite -- older woman, younger man. All the time. I have to wonder if Elisa will still be so amused if things get serious? No telling, because that's a whole other ballgame. I suppose we shall see...
Agent HOrange was so funny, going to sleep in the spare room. As if Augie hadn't already been wishing she'd sleep in the spare room, all these years, so he wouldn't have to listen to her drivel every night. You did him a favor, honey.
I swear GABINO looked like a confused, scolded little boy every time he was on screen. Every time he thinks he's home free... nope, no can do. LOL
"Braised Asshat" LMAO!
Someone said in comments this week that Rique looked like a young Elliott Gould... you're right. He does!
Well, guess I should slow my roll and go read y'all's comments, mates. Thanks again for the extravagant meal, Sylvia. *belch* :)
Damian's jealousy over Gael hugging Elisa is good. He doesn't need to think he really has an open field or he won't work as hard to get her.
*wishing for more 'round the table dinners like the one last night LOLOL* Poor Carmina. What a bitter pill. It's not that your hubby doesn't want female company because of Estefy. It's that he doesn't want you. OUCH. (Kudos to actress Sabine. She rocks.)
Gael has pretty much liked Augie, but lately has considered him an A-hole and someone to steer clear of because of his downright meanness. Who are you, kind sir, and what have you done with Elisa's daddy indeed. :)
Carlos, I agree with you... I'm sure hoping Kenia doesn't end up doing a 180. That would so suck. (If she were in the States at this age, she'd be expected to be in school. Forgive my ignorance but why isn't she? Is she a dropout, or simply a runabout because she's pretty much unsupervised? I think I've missed something. I thought she was at least legal.)
I'm afraid to look at tonight's episode. I don't want to see Augie slip backwards and reclaim his lameness. I want him to move forward, do better, and doggonit MAKE UP FOR THE CRAP HE HAS DONE.
Anon 10:47 hit on something that's at the root of my disdain for HefFina. The woman your husband was leaving you for wasn't holding a gun to his head. He was leaving you and his kid of his own accord. He was even going to leave his kid in YOUR pit-viper hands to be with his ho. So stop acting like Rosendo was up for sainthood. Granted, you were a horror to live with, but he sucked. Plain and simple.
Yes, Rosemary, I have noticed Mark T's soft kissable lips. And I continue noticing them. :)
This is my first time watching David Z. since Sortilegio, where I hated his character immensely and without pause. It's wonderful that his acting can make me root for and enjoy Damian as much as I do. What an actor!
Your recap was spot on. The Mexican cuisine tie-in was (forgive me) the icing on the cake. My comments on this episode:
Tangel-HO turns bitter orange with resentment when the dinner guests steal a little of the limelight when they dare to encroach on her naranjal (sort of). The heat generated by her seething indignation was sufficient to make a pumpkin soufflé of her.
It was interesting that Paloma had something so important to say but the viewers never got to hear what it was! What was that all about? I guess the telenovela writers never got around to finishing that particular scene.
Thanks again for the creative recapping. Love this telenovela.
so will augusto finally get his glasses fixed, all the better to oggle kenia?
i guess i missed the episode where they broke, but it bugs me all the time. heavy handed metaphor that he is blind with greif? i dunno, i find orangina so hard to look at, maybe the kalidescope effect is more fun.
mai tai
Thanks again for all your comments, I'm off to read Cynderella's recap for Friday...
