Ha! I'd love to Fabian Robles pull off a dress! I bet he could do it.

I was thinking something like Key Largo, and put Silvia Navaro in the lead since she reminded someone of Lauren Bacall. Plus they have native peoples in there so it would give them a chance to add a little heritage. Will have to think about the other parts.

I chose Fabian Robles for the Jack Lemmon part because he has excellent comic timing and also lacks credibility as a female impersonator.

I would produce "the taming of the shrew" (see film '50s film " la fierilla domada" with Carmen Sevilla) with Jorge Salinas and Ana Brenda Contre and I'd place the story at 19th century Mexico. Or "Pablo and Carolina" ( a Pedro Infante tilm) with the same protagonists. The second film is about a girl accidentally complicating a man's love life by writing a romantic letter to whom she belives to be an imaginary person; he comes to the DF to confront her and she hides in plain sight by pretending to be her naval officer of a brother ; comedy ensues.
An other classic film that could be adapted as a novela is "Duena y senora" ( a '40s film featuring a very young and beautiful Marga Lopez, aka the Cesar Evora's evil mother from "El privilegio de amar" ). A drama starting with a flashback about a campesina falling in love with the haciendado's son and having his baby while he doesn't assume responsibility and marries a rich society lady of noble sentiments. when she finds out about the baby, she offers to raise him as her own. So a couple of decades later, the Senora is dead and the old campesina is the housekeeper of the house in DF where she rules the roost. Her old lover brings home another very young campesina from the hacienda (M. Lopez) for him to marry. Everybody thinks she's a gold-digger and she and the housekeeper and her son have many civil and not so civil confrontations... There are undercurrents of attraction between the future madrastra and her future step-son and she may or may not be redeemable. How will the father react? ... Picturing Ana Brenda Contreras in the madrastra's role vs. Brandon Peniche .
I could go on and on about old films. Off the top of my head: A) "la viudita naviera" , a spanish '50s gem with Paquita Rico ,as an early 20th century Cadiz ingenueho marries an old shipowner/captain who then promptly dies on her . As a widow she lives with her sister-in-law and has two pretendientes, another shipowning competitor and her own ship's captain. It's a musical with scenes from the carnaval of Cadiz and the allegre cuban harbour cantina. Again with Ana Brenda as the widow. Poncho Herrera could be the captain. And Jorge Salinas the naval competitor.
B) "Mama nos quita los novios". A screwball comedy.
 

I love the idea of another Taming of the Shrew despite its anti-feminist tone. There is a lot about it that is cross-cultural.

Now, this one would require a really great writer because it isn't easy to translate the dialogue of Oscar Wilde:

La fierilla domada" , the spanish film based on the "The taming of the shrew", wasn't a carbon copy of the original play. Catalina was a frustrated tomboy / proto-feminist who may have become a shrew out of sheer "desperation". And in my suggested novela the leads could end up reforming each other. A war of the sexes till they patch up a modus operandi for their marriage. Picture Ana Brenda as Catalina. Jorge Salinas as her roguish novio against her declared will ( I loved Ana Paula and Rogelio and the actors dynamics) . Zuria Vega as her sister, the good daughter. Eric del Castillo as the father. Jaime Camil as one of the sister's novios , preferably the one masquerading as a servant. Flavio Medina as a momma's boy with funny touches heroically dangling after Catalina for her dowry. A writer could do a lot with the play's argument. Maybe Catalina is a bastarda or the product of a first marriage of her father with a lower-class woman; her parents die tragically while ib her childhood and she has no recourse but live with hen-pecked grand-dad Eric del Castillo. Also scratch out the suster part. Zuria could be her snooty prima, granpapaaaa's princess, feeling threatened by la morena intrusa ( twrowing in racist implications, AB could get a tan). There could also be inheritance issues for both the AB and JS characters. She could be a rebel child , product of an inappropriate marriage and he could be a self-made rich qlpha-male who is also a rich man's bastard and only heir.She's backed into a corner and acts like tiger. He admires her, identifies with her subliminally but tries to tame her. bla bla. Eventually they reach a mutual accord and take on the bad guys.All the while the viewers witness comedy, drama, sizzling chemistry and the main couple sticking together a la Sirtilegio.
 

This is an interesting thread. I'm liking all the ideas.

Televisa's biggest network rival in Mexico, TV Azteca, bought the rights and made their version of Grey's Anatomy in telenovela from the Colombian production that had already adapted it. The response of the audience was for them was so good that they have now launched their own Telenovela adaptation of "Dallas" and, though I had my doubts before itaired, the novela is actually pretty good.

Maybe Televisa will one day do something like that and look somewhere else for their adaptations instead of the same old telenovela stories of fifty years ago.
