Capitulo
148: The Trap Is Set
Lo
del pasado:
Camila and Mariano look over the bulls; she seems in a good mood. Daniel asks
Augustina about the passports; she tells him they are most likely
still in the briefcase she couldn't get. A reluctant Sherlock Juarez
arrives – with four men – to arrest her on charges of fraud.
Lo de
nuevo:
Parlour:
Juarez says that the Associo por el Mejor Futuro claims she does
not work for them; she says she signed the documents in front of El
Diablo and Hissadora. Daniel says that they must be behind the accusation leading to this arrest. Becerra tells her not to worry; they will get
a good lawyer for her right away. Daniel tells her he will talk to
Teresa about getting her a lawyer. She seems to realize that El
Diablo is behind this arrest and thinks that this was an act of
revenge. Sherlock Juarez takes out the cuffs although he doesn't put them on her.
Outside the Hacienda: Daniel, Becerra, and Amanda follow her outside. Piedad, Hipolito, Dorotea, and Rodolfo are there. They tell Augustina they will call Camila. Daniel tells her they will follow her to the police station. She is put into the police car by the black-clad cops [Why on earth did they feel the need to bring billy clubs?] and taken away. Becerra then says they shouldn't alarm Camila unnecessarily and call her later if they can't get Augustina out right away. Daniel says this is not right but goes off with Becerra and Amanda. The employees are incredulous except for Rodolfo, who realizes that this was El Diablo's work. He decides to go to the police station to speak for Augustina.
Don
Manuel's Ranch: After a conversation about the dedication
required to breed toros bravos, Camila is making a deal for all the
bulls she looked at. She attempts to call home, but Don Manuel tells
her that the storm the night before knocked out the cell towers and
the land lines. He invites her to come inside to sign the contracts.
La
Malquerida, Parlour: Hipolito explains what has just happened
and that they were told not to worry Camila. Pablo disagrees, saying
that Camila would be angry if something this serious is hidden from
her. He tries to call, but gets a message on his cell that the call
cannot be completed. Luzma says something about everyone there being
cursed or something, and exits. Pablo knows what that means but the
others look on with curiosity they don't pursue for the moment.
Pablo suggests that the others look for Rodolfo while he stays in
case Mariano or Camila call.
Miriam's
House: Miriam, Teresa, and Dante sit around having coffee.
Teresa answers her cell phone; it's Daniel. She stands up at the malas noticias, agrees to
get to the police station, then ends the call. She explains to
Miriam and Dante what happened although she doesn't yet know the
details. Daniel accuses El Diablo of being behind this; Miriam
comments that he is responsible for Abe being in prison. Dante asks
whether Teresa would like him to accompany her, but she tells him to
stay with Miriam until Daniel gets back. She then exits. [We are
left to wonder whether she will go to the delegacíón in that short,
one-strap cocktail dress or go home first to change.]
La
Buenaventura, Bratgirl's Room: She skypes with her parents,
telling them that Hissadora is kicking her out. She is the new
dueña, after all. Her father doesn't quite believe this. She tells
them that Cayetonto took Hissadora's side. Her mother tells her
emphatically that now is the time for her to come home. She doesn't
want to because – sorpresa! – she fell in love with Iagho! He
dad won't hear of it; he's had it with the humiliations she's had to
take from this family. She mentions Hissadora calling her an
arrimada [squatter; freeloader]. He tells her to pack her things and
they will come to get her in the morning. She then tells them that
Hissadora has dominated Cayetonto and she thinks she's drugging him.
Her mother picks up on this, asking “What drops?” Ileana [We
may be able to retire her nickname] tells her she has been
putting drops in his drink and that he's been a completely different
person since Hissadora's been around. If she leaves now, something
might happen to him. Her parents look worried.
Viviana
and Rafael's Place: His bandages are off and it looks like his
vision is alright. His new problem is that his book debut is coming
up and he is in a quandary about inviting Daniel and Camila because
of how being in the same place would affect them. Both are good
friends to him, so he feels very bad about this. Viviana tells him
that it's their decision to come or not. She then realizes that if
Miriam reads the book she will know that it is the love story of
Daniel and Camila. Even Aaron pauses at that one, asking Rafa “You
changed the names, didn't you?” Of course, he says, but Vivi is right; they are the obvious protagonists of the story.
“Well, maybe she won't read the book,” Viviana speculates. Or
they will leave before the event. They continue in this vein as
Roman gets up from his seat in another room and enters [We wonder
how much of this he heard and how much of it he understands] and
enters asking about leaving. The repairs to the orphanage will be
finished soon and the kids have to go back. Viviana tells him not to
think about that for now and takes his notebook to look at his
drawings. They sit down and Rafael looks at them together.
[Methinks he is reconsidering his previous objection to adoption.]
La
Malquerida, Cocina: Piedad can't stop thinking about what's
happened to Augustina. She wonders about bringing her food.
Hipolito says they can't help her now, but should be helping others
whom they can, namely Pablo and Luzma. He points out how things
aren't looking good with them at this point, with Pablo's injury and
Luzma's tears. She isn't ready to believe that, telling him he's
imagining things, like the other day when he said Mayalen looked like
she was flirting with Pablo. He points out that she doesn't see this
because she hasn't seen them together. He is experienced in these things and is sure that Luzma and
Pablo are fighting. “If you don't believe me, go ask.” She
does, but she's annoyed with him.
Delegacíón:
El Diablo's plaid-clad henchman who has been staking out the
action there texts him that Augustina has been arrested. Percussion section provides a little emphasis before the creepy violins take over. Daniel,
Amanda, Becerra, Rodolfo, and Teresa arrive at the same time.
[Teresa did not change clothes, which may or may not help her
client's case.] The official tells her that they will take
Augustina's statement before she is detained. Teresa then turns to
Augustina to tell her she will try to find out who brought the
charge, but this may not help as fraud is a federal offense. The cop
leads Augustina away and Daniel tells Becerra and Amanda that he's
going to inform Camila because this situation is more complicated
than expected. They agree that this is the right thing. He has the
same trouble reaching Camila that Pablo did. Rodolfo tells Daniel
that Pablo would know where Camila would be at this time so he calls
him. We don't hear Pablo's end of the conversation but he tells
Daniel the location of the other breeder and how to get there. As he
ends the call Daniel tells Becerra and Amanda he is going to go to
get Camila. Amanda becomes concerned about him driving out on the
highway alone [She has good anvil sense], but he says that
this is an emergency. Rodolfo volunteers to go with him and they
exit together.
Although we
do not hear this, the charges are read to Augustina in front of
Teresa.
El
Diablo's Lair (Study): He reads the text and laughs to himself
as he picks up his drink. “You have been arrested, Augustina. You
won't be set free... at least until your dear daughter accepts a deal with
me.” [Dionicio Ferrer, may you burn in hell for all eternity.]
Don
Manuel's Office: To the sound of flamenco music, Camila signs
the contract and tells the breeder that he will receive the first
deposit next week. He tells her that the first delivery of bulls
will also happen; they shake hands. He proposes a toast, but Camila
quietly tells Mariano she'd like to get back to the ranch early.
Nonetheless, Don Manuel brings their wine and invites them to stay
for a celebratory dinner and they accept. Camila is in a mood good
enough that would indicate disaster even if we flies on the wall
didn't know what horrible news awaits her.
Pablo &
Luzma's Room: Luzma is packing her clothes as Piedad enters.
She is shocked at the sight and asks whether she is looking to move
back to Aculco after what has happened to Augustina. Luzma tells her
no, then that she will be returning to the servants' quarters because
she and Pablo are separating. Piedad is impactada.
Mariano's
House: Ileana has gone there looking for him only to be told by
Rocio that he went out early that day. They ask her why she wants to
see him and she says it's to say goodbye because Hissadora is
evicting her. She tells Rocio and Refugio about Hissadora drugging
Cayetano's drinks, he isn't himself lately, and she's sure that
Hissadora is up to something muy malo. Rocio is not surprised.
Cell
Block: Augustina is behind bars. Teresa tells her she needs all
the documents relating to the insurance business. Augustina tells
her and Becerra that El Diablo has them all. Nor does she possess
the documents that say she worked for the relevant company. Teresa
asks about bank deposits and she says there were some about two
months previously. She asks whether they can get help from her
friends about this, but Augustina isn't sure. Certainly not from
Gladys' family, who are now awaiting payment. Teresa says she will
talk to the others and asks her to please trust her.
Miriam's
House: She is talking to Gaston, who is in the prison visiting
facility with Abe. When he hands him the phone Abe cheerfully tells
Miriam not to worry about him. He gave himself up because what he
did to Daniel was not forgivable. He had abused his authority and is
taking his medicine for it. She tells him she was going to reproach
him for all the lies he told her but now she doesn't want to do that.
He begs her forgiveness; he was so upset at seeing her in a coma
that he took it out on Daniel and that wasn't right. She wants to
come home but says that Daniel told her it wasn't a good idea while
he was under arrest; Abe agrees. She tells him that Dante and Teresa
will be in Chile in a few days with charges against El Diablo [Did
they get the cell phone records behind our backs?]. He tells her
to tell them to contact Gaston immediately upon arrival. She agrees.
He asks for Daniel, but she explains he isn't there at the moment
and that they are no longer living at the ranch. They will return to
Chile when El Diablo is sent to hell. He can't wait to see her.
Ella tambien. She is crying as she ends the call. Dante is sitting
at the table with her through this call and he shows his empathy.
Don
Manuel's Ranch: We get a view of the Paso de Pamplona statue as
we see them dining al fresco. Daniel and Rodolfo arrive and Camila
is initially annoyed until Daniel delivers the malas noticias. She
doesn't quite believe it until Daniel explains that this is about the
retirement fund stuff and if Augustina can't be proven innocent she
will go to prison for a very long time. Camila apologises to Don
Manuel, saying this must be a misunderstanding. He tells her he will
have someone get their vehicle. Rodolfo heads for the one he and
Daniel drove up in as Camila gets Daniel to provide the details. She
had discovered something about El Diablo and came back to La
Malquerida. Becerra called him to help. Camila asks questions, Daniel answers them, tells her that Teresa is getting on it. Camila is almost losing it,
but calms down as Don Manuel comes to tell her that her vehicle is
ready. He tells her not to worry about the deal. Camila and Mariano
take their leave and head for the cars. Daniel mentions not being
able to reach them by phone, but Camila is past anger now. Mariano
consents to have Daniel ride with them while Rodolfo returns to the ranch.
Delegacíón:
As the shaky wheels of Mexican justice turn for Augustina, Amanda
becomes concerned about Natalia. Amanda mentions that when Natalia
went to work for El Diablo to spy on him she mentioned a retirement
fund company. Osvaldo is sure that El Diablo wouldn't hurt Natalia
at this point after everything he's done for her and bought her
[including a worthless husband who is likely to hurt her somehow]
but Amanda is not. She tells him “You never know with him or what
weapons he can use against her.” He used Augustina for his own
convenience after all while he was boinking Hissadora. Amanda is now determined to tell Natalia the
truth for her own protection. Osvaldo is sure, though, that they
need proof against El Diablo first. Amanda tries to get him to
understand that she is looking to protect her daughter, but he asks
her for a few days so he can get proof against El Diablo first. She
agrees. But only for a few days. [There is an anvil heading in their direction, we can be
certain.]
Mariano's
House: Rocio and Refugio have just told Pablo what Ileana has
told them. He is not inclined to believe it because of the past lies
Ileana has told. Refugio, however, tells him that despite not being
a fan of this girl, she believes her. Hissadora is bad news. This
seems to change Pablo's mind as he now recalls how alienated he and
Mariano now are from Cayetano. Rocio says this has to be
investigated, so Pablo decides he has to talk to Iagho and Ileana.
He then sits between the two ladies to give them the malas noticias
about Luzma requesting that they separate. He doesn't want to go
into details, but ends up telling them that she has difficulty
dealing with what Leoncerdo did to her. Rocio mentions psychiatry,
but Pablo tells her that this hasn't brought any progress yet.
Refugio points out that she hopes that this will be very temporary
because they have a love that is hard to find. Pablo tells them
that Luzma is everything to him and although he doesn't want to he will go back to the house in
Aculco for the time being.
Luzma's
Old Room: Piedad helps her put her things back, cursing that
Leoncerdo has messed up her life so badly. Luzma doesn't want to
talk about any of this, now or ever. Piedad suggests that she move away from La
Malquerida and its memories and the risk of running into Pablo
again and again. Luzma doesn't want to be away from Piedad and says so;
Piedad says she would leave with her. Luzma is happy that Piedad is
willing to do this and they hug, but her expression at this point
looks less than optimistic.
Delegacíón:
Teresa and Osvaldo explain their suspicions to Juarez, who asks
whom the checques were made out to. They had been made out to
Augustina. Osvaldo comments that El Diablo is a possible partner or
sole owner of the company and that he has done this to entrap
Augustina. Juarez needs the papers proving the connexion between El
Diablo and the investment company. Teresa asks – not quite
understanding it – whether El Diablo had her arrested because she
had discovered that he was boinking Hissadora. Juarez connects this
(along with his invasion of the Monterde family) to his intent to
steal La Malquerida. Teresa says then that if this is the case then
El Diablo is a grifter. [???]
Juarez has to call him to get him to clarify the charges. Osvaldo
asks him to hold off on that for the moment. Juarez is waiting now
for fingerprint analysis results to prove that Dionicio Ferrer is
actually Hector Gutierrez. He'd like to have that information in
hand when he calls him. Osvaldo is waiting for a copy of the
marriage certificate from Las Vegas, but neither he nor Juarez know
if that will have fingerprints. This does not bode well at all,
especially as El Diablo will be there first thing in the morning.
Prison: Ominous music as Leoncerdo is on garbage detail; he and the mustachioed prisoner take
out the black bags.
Road:
As Mariano drives, Camila talks to Osvaldo on her cell, obviously
hearing the aforementioned events. As she ends the call she is
upset. Mariano touches her in empathy with Daniel watching jealously
from the back seat.
Cell
Block: One of the female prisoners begans screaming “Let me
out! Let me out!” Augustina's belligerent-looking cellmate gives
her a dirty look and an angry word, then a nasty look at Augustina,
who cowers while silently praying “Virgencita, I know it's my fault
I'm here for believing in Dionicio. But I beg you not to leave me
here. Help me prove my innocence.”
Road:
Camila and the guys talk about El Diablo being behind her mother's
arrest. That the company claims Augustina doesn't work for them.
She starts to call El Diablo, but Daniel tells her she shouldn't.
She tells him that it's none of his business and she will solve her
own problems. He doesn't lose it at her but says that the point is
to help her mother. Mariano would also talk to him, but Camila
insists that they both stay out of it. [Your author is getting a
very bad vibe here.] She only gets the devil's voicemail and
leaves the message “Dionicio, I know you're behind what's happened
to my mother and we have to talk. I want her free of all of it.”
Prison:
Leoncerdo and the other guy put the black trash bags into the large
grey units. The garbage truck approaches and the other guy tells
Leoncerdo they need to go back inside because they're not supposed to
be out there when the garbage is picked up. They start to walk away
as three guards begin dragging the units toward the curb. However,
Leoncerdo stays in a doorway watching as he sees the units being
emptied, noting that two or three of those huge bags fit into one of
those grey dumpsters. [If he had to escape, we can think of no
more appropriate means.]
El
Diablo's Lair: He gets Camila's message. He laughs and says,
“No, no, no, no, no. I need you to beg more. You will have to be
desperate to save your mother. Yes. Only like that. You will kneel
at my feet. Neither your beloved Daniel nor your faithful Mariano
can do anything for you. Anything! Only I, I, I! Is that clear?
Only I can save your mother and you. I!” [Dear readers, you
have no idea how fast I had to run to the vomitorium after that.]
Avances
El Diablo gloats to the Black Widow while Camila contemplates a desperate action.

The thing Juarez said is that they are going to call Dio in to make a statement (since Gussy claims he brought her into the company). And while he's there making his statement, Juarez is going to somehow maneuver to have his fingerprints taken so that they can compare them to the ones on the Hector Gutierrez marriage certificate. Meanwhile, Osvaldo is still going to try to get hold of the Las Vegas marriage certificate in hopes that it has fingerprints too.

Thanks, UA, for another super fast and super great recap. I was interested to see that you and I were on the same wave length about several things. I too wondered about whether Teresa was going to go to the police station in her sexy black dress. I loved your comment that her dress "may or may not help her client's case." And I also wondered about the scene with Roman. The way he seemed to listen before making his presence known seemed to suggest that he did hear what was being said about the problems that will arise if Miriam reads Rafa's book, and that his hearing is Important. Hmmm...There are now so many ways in which Miriam can find out The Truth. Add the book's plot and motormouth Roman as two more possibilities.
Thanks for explaining what Leoncerdo was thinking as he watched the three guards picking up the garbage. I mistakenly thought he was considering whether he could take out all three of them (the guards)and make his escape.
Looks as if Hipo is batting two for two in his observations about Luzma and Pablo. First he notes that NG is flirting with Pablo, and now he realizes that P and L are fighting. Apparently the score is Hipo 2, Piedad 0.
I enjoyed your comment about now being able to retire Ileana's nickname. She certainly does seem to be spreading the word about Hissy and the drops. The question is whether any of the people she has told will be able to put that information to good use. That's not yet clear.
Finally, ITA that Camila's insistence on handling her mother's problem by herself is likely to play directly into Dio's sick wishes. The one ray of hope I see with Dio is that at the end of tonight's episode he really seemed to be on the verge of insanity with his repeated "Yo yo yo yo yo." And if he's truly nuts, he may make some major careless errors. Ojalá.

Camila ... independent to a fault in this case (imho.) I agree with Dan, she shouldn't have called Dio. Her first action should be finding out all of the facts.
Piedad ... so is she saying that she will go with Luzma ... both she and Hipolito? Maybe there will be another visit to Padre Anselmo who will tell them that individual and joint therapy should be the next option, not running away.
Interesting plot regarding the book! I'd forgotten about that! Miriam can read the whole thing as a best seller. Since everyone is so nervous about giving her bad news, at the very least, they should re-visit the doctor to ask him (even if he is being blackmailed) how to manage the telling of inevitable bad news. For example, could they tell her at the hospital, under the doctor's watchful eye? So now we have the book, the photo, Caridad, and everyone else in town who can reveal the Dan/Cam truth at any moment. (BTW, I thought that Cam was a bit hostile toward Dan.)
I forgive Agustina. I feel for her now. I also feel bad for poor Gladys.

When Pie and Hip were in the courtyard after Gussie was paraded in front of everyone and led away in virtual chains, they were discussing how evil & bad Dio was. Hip made this pithy comment, "Malo es un Halago," meaning that referring to Dio, Bad is an Endearment.

I will add to what has already been said that I liked the scene of Pablo couched between his two mamas, trying to figure it all out. He and Pablo are such babies still. On the other side, excellent to have Hipolito in the fold on Luzma's side. He's the man, and full of feminine intuition, too.

She likely endured a girlhood of hearing about getting married, having a male protector, and everything other thing offensive to the reality that women are strong and intelligent. When he showed up like that, and said something was up with her mom, it was almost an exact replay of the time he interrupted her dinner with Mar and LIED and said her mom was ill in order to get her to leave with him to the ranch. Fool me once...
Then, there was really no reason for Dan to come. Rod could have come alone or with anyone else to give her the news. She has made it more than clear that she does not want to spend time with Dan. She said her goodbyes, over and over. She doesn't want to do it anymore. She's been crystal clear about this. Dan is disregarding her wishes.

Considering that Gussie managed to escape from the devil's lair it would not have been wise for anyone from La Malquerida to go alone looking for Camila. Amanda, Osvaldo, and Rodolfo appreciate the danger of underestimating El Diablo, but I think only Daniel really understands his obsession with Camila.
Sometimes Camilla seems to ignore or chooses not to believe that guys fall for her. She denied that Mariano was in love with her, and she denied that Dio wanted her. Is this false humility or another esteem issue when it comes to the power of her attraction. One can be humble, but as a beautiful, smart woman, she should also recognize her "attraction factor" so that she can operate wisely without sending out false vibes and actions that can be interpreted as flirtations and desires.

Vivi, you do a terrific job of explaining Cam's hostile response to Dan in the scene at Don Manuel's ranch and in the car afterwards. And you make a great point about the scene when Dan and Rodolfo arrive being eerily like the time Dan interrupted Camila's dinner with Mariano and lied to her about her mother's being ill. (I'm in awe of your ability to recall so much of the TN in detail.)
Can I also say that I love Dan? He's imperfect, but loveable. Sometimes he's so strong... physically and emotionally. Other times he seems so defeated, and weakened. The scene with Mariano touching Camila in the front seat, while he was in the backseat made him look like a sad little boy ... especially since Camila kept yelling at him. Given his tendency to have a temper, he used a calm voice throughout.
On another note, it seemed like Agustina felt like she had a son for the first time. It was nice seeing Dan ib the room with Amanda and Agustina. Contrast/compare to Pablo with Refugio and Rocio.

LXV, I loved "shouter of frijoles." And I too wondered why no one told Juarez about what Gussie had been through at Dio's.
Camila has NEVER sent out any flirtation vibes to Dio. *shudder* In fact, she is very much not herself when she’s with him. With everyone else she hugs and kisses them and takes their arm without thinking. That's men and women. It's who she is. She was hugging and kissing old rancher Manuel this episode, and she does it with Vivi, and Rafa, and...well, everybody, except Dio. She even holds back from doing it much with Mariano since she knows how he feels about her. But most times she can't help it because it comes naturally to her.
She really doesn't see herself as being some hot ticket. I think she has a reasonable view of her attractiveness. With Mariano, she knows that a large part of the attraction is how much they have in common. She did pick up on his attraction to her long ago before Dan pointed it out. She mentioned it to Vivi in one of their girl talks, and her attitude about it at the time was there was nothing she could do about how Mar feels, because she knew how she felt about Dan/Andres. She wasn't going to make a big deal out of it, unless it became an issue-- which it eventually did.
Dio is just too icky to contemplate. She has just been trying to pretend that his obsession for her doesn't exist. But it's apparent she knows about it by the way she interacts with Dio, or doesn't. She will eventually need to admit that this is a real problem and confront it. But really, what could she do about it before now, when the man hasn't outright come on to her yet?

Before I read the comments, I want to say that I think that Dion will say that he has no paperwork and this was all Aggie's work, he just encouraged her with this job. And he doesn't have any of the money from it either.

I figured he must have found some things, phone records of his own and some record of Dion visiting the prison that could help incriminate him.

Nanette, I have also been saying that I keep expecting Ileana and Yago to have hot and heavy I-hate-you sex.

OT: Novela recommendations for after AB
I know that we are all thinking about what to watch next and I for one and dreading the end of this very compelling novela. I have already bailed on Porque el amor manda, just too silly, though I love FC in a comic role. I'll try Que bonito amor, with JS.

I have watched just one episode and am thinking about the next one . . . a good sign!

I'm surprised that Ileana said she was in love with Iago. I agree that they belong together, but love?

Nanette- Since he spends so much time looking at Cami and not at the road, I prefer that Mariano drive slowly. LOL!
Iliana has said this about loving Iago to her mother before. Her mom didn't believe it the last time either. Iliana doesn't know what love is. Her pride has been hurt by Iago's rejection and scorn, and maybe she thinks that yearning and a desire to be wanted by him is love. In any case, Iago hasn't even ever shown sexual attraction towards her, so I don't think even hate sex will/would ever happen between those two.

I need to correct something I wrote. In fact, there are more than 200 episodes of this each season for 7 seasons. It's more like an American soap in that way. It's really interesting, but a long haul. The website has all the information.

Traveling Lady, I checked out this soap and it is a very long commitment. That's what I like about the Mexican TNs over the American soap operas. They end. They're in between a miniseries and a soap opera. I wish they would make the equivalent for english speaking shows.
