Weekend Discussion: Producers Novelographies - Updated March 9, 2015

These lists are not purported to be exhaustive, to name every single producer and every single telenovela ever made.  For the purposes of this list, most of the producers made telenovelas for Televisa, or were shown on prime-time on Univision and recapped on CarayCaray. The titles in Bold feature the current prime time line-up or coming soon. Since then, several have been added broadcasting on Telemundo and TV Azteca.

There is an arbitrary cut-off at 1999, with a couple of exceptions.  It has been interesting to note the number of times an Executive Producer, working under a Producer, goes on to Produce his or her own.  I haven’t included this information, or the list would become endless.  The only exception was Salvador Mejia Alejandre, because it was hard to distinguish whether he was Producer, Executive Producer, or Co-Producer. Disclaimer: This information comes exclusively from Wikipedia or IMDB and the cable companies. They have been pulled together into one document.

Quiero Amarte starts in the past, when Mauro Montesinos and Elena, the heiress to the coffee plantation, “El Paraíso,” fall in love. They have a child together, Juliana. Elena dies and Mauro is widowed and Juliana motherless. Mauro finds love again when he meets Florencia, the owner of some nearby coffee lands. Just before he is to marry Florencia, Lucrecia, an old "friend," reels him into a loveless marriage with the news she is expecting his child. Later on, Lucrecia finds out Mauro still loves Florencia, even though Florencia has married Mauro's best friend, David, who is also the administrator of Mauro's family coffee plantation. David and Florencia have one child, Amaya. Mauro and Lucrecia have two sons, César, the eldest, Maximiliano and twins Lucio and Flavia. In the present, Max and Amaya fall in love, but evil, secrets, ambitions and pain surround them to keep them from realizing their love.

I REALLY Wanted Lety, Ferdy, and Marcelo to win so YAY! I couldn't believe Ruffo won. I wanted Jaime to win but David was like the automatic choice LOL.

Good stuff. At some point I think there needs to be a compendium of remakes, particularly about the classic stories that have more than two versions.

I watched the awards, too, and I have been scratching my head since last night about this stuff. Victoria Ruffo? CdL winning over AB? Where are people's brains?

Anita- Many thanks for putting this post together. It’s really interesting to see all of these producers’ work together. Here are a few thoughts I had:

Salvador Mejia: I’m surprised he hasn’t tried his hand at a comedy since he loves to inject his dramas with comedy. I think he might be missing his calling because his love of color, pizzazz, and cultural flavor would fit well in a comedic telenovela.

Juan Osorio Ortiz: This is an example of someone who does a mix of comedy and dramas (mostly comedy recently) who did excellent work with a drama- Mi Pecado. That tn was dark, crisp, and very well done.

Emilio Larossa: Seems to do a mix of comedy, drama, mystery, and teen tns. Good for him that he likes to do different things. I enjoyed both Dinero and La Verdad Oculta. The two couldn’t have been more different. All they had in common were a few of Larossa’s favorite actors.

Rosy Ocampo: She usually only does comedies, and she just got the big prize for best telenovela last night with Por Ella Soy Eva. Congrats to her. But I thought she did excellent work with the only adult drama on her list—La Fuerza del Destino. That one, like Mi Pecado, was dark, but very good (and short). My only complaint about that tn was the lack of chemistry between the leads. It was so different than the rest of Ocampo’s work. She should try her hand at drama again.

Carlos Moreno: Not sure why he took such a long break in producing tns before En Nombre del Amor, but it was a good break. He has assembled a team that does excellent work with long, complex storylines that keep the audience engaged.

Ignacio Sada Madero: Since Refugio Para el Amor was such a surprise hit, I wonder if he’ll be given more/higher profile projects and actors. I’d be interested to see what he produces in the future.

Carla Estrada: Oooh! Looks like her next one is a historical tn. Can’t wait! I’m sure it will be good.

Corazon Salvaje: Thanks for posting the list. I also posted on the Televisa/Uni recaps late last night. I’m going to repost it below because that list has a few more categories like script, theme, directing. I was very happy that Leti, Flavio, and Marcelo (ay Marcelo!) won.

Urban- I hear ya about the Male Protagonist winner. David Z. (as hot as he is), did not do much with his Abismo galan. CdlF would have been a way better choice, but there you have it. Since SN wasn’t in the running for Female Protagonist, Victoria Ruffo seems like a logical choice to me. In his acceptance speech, Flavio Medina dedicates his award to Silvia and his sisters. I thought that was really sweet. You can see his speech here, and all the other winners’ acceptance videos too: http://bit.ly/ZWDmWG

Refugio Para el Amor, the little telenovela that could, didn’t get any of the big prizes, but they won a few audience favorite awards: Best Couple and Best Kiss. AB’s Flavio and Silvia won for Best Slap.

BTW, for anyone who wants to watch or re-watch it, Amigas y Rivales comes on at 11AM EST on UniMas starting this morning.

I saw this back in the day and while it is far from my favorite series I had the rare experience of seeing Gabriel Soto for the first time in that one without realizing that he was seriously uglied down to portray Ulises as "Feo". I did the headslap when I finally realized that his clothes were padded through the first half to disguise his dynamite body.

Thank you, Anita, for your research and posting it all here for us!

Jarifa

Great list Anita, gracias muchas

Mejia doing a comedy? Not much of a stretch, all his TN's are a joke.

Victoria Ruffo???????? Did she cry when she accepted?
Nothing would surprise me after that.
I didn't like any of the others much either & since the bone heads didn't nominate SN, what could you expect?

Love Marcelo Cordoba but his villain wasn't that villainous.
I like David Zepeda a lot but CdlF deserved that.
Leticia was the best, that was a no brainer.
AB was the best but I loved Por Ella soy Eva also.

Victoria Ruffo??????????????? I'm sobbing in my café. waaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Anita, thanks VERY much for this terrific resource! I know I will find it very helpful in finding older telenovelas by directors I've liked and judging the likelihood of my wanting to see upcoming ones.

Since "La Reina del Sur" remains my all-time favorite, I was hoping to see the producer(s) here. I think they are Ángel Ossorio and Patricio Wills I have no idea what else they've done. I know you said you were focusing mostly on Televisa, and perhaps it makes sense to limit the list that way, but I thought I'd offer the suggestion anyway. Feel free to ignore it.

Anyway, whether or not you add "Reina," muchas gracias otra vez.

Juanita- La Reina del Sur has the President of Telemundo-RCI, Patricio Wills, listed as the Executive Producer. Obviously Telemundo wanted this one to be supervised closely from the top. But of its list of Producers (Hugo León Ferrer, Martha Godoy, Aurelio Valcárcel Carrol) Hugo Leon’s name is at the top. He has quite a lot of tns that he’s executively produced, many covered here on Caray Caray.

Thank you for the comments and additions. Juanita--you are in charge of Telemundo. Vivi has given you a good start.

Somewhere down the line I'll list all the Caray recapped ones. I enjoyed linking over to several to pick up hints and went to the introduction and elencos, with photos.

About the Premios--I was shocked, shocked, I say, over some of the premios. I don't know how many Carayer actually watched Corona, but since we didn't recap it, how could we know it was sooo good! Personally, I think Victoria Ruffo's prize was a pity prize for crying--at least that's as much as I caught regularly waiting for PEAM.

Excuse me, but when do Actores Juveniles stop being juveniles? Ferdinando Valencia has been around since before ENDA in 2008 and he was already an adult then. Is he still considered a teen-ager????? I do like Livia Brito a lot and I'm not trying to minimize her acting abilities, but didn't she just win the same premio for TdA?

Do they not give out Premios to best producer, or is winning the best in show enough?

Anyway, another tid-bit, if you didn't catch it last night. Carla Estrada was nominated for a serie that she's been producing, was it Los Doctores? Maybe that's why she's been dormant since her last, Sortilegio.

Granted, Carla wants to achieve perfection down to every detail, which costs money. Since all tns, good or bad, get the same amount of air time, where is the incentive to produce a masterpiece? Is it reruns and DVD's, like the U.S.? Food for thought.

Is art (and related categories) subsidized by the Mexican government, as it is in European countries and NOT in the U.S.? Just curious.

Good question Anita. I'm guessing it's not government subsidized. At least the movies aren't because I've seen several interviews with actors like SN who speak about how hard it is to find financing for movies in Mexico, which is why movies that many of them make languish for so long before they get enough financing to be released.

I do think Best Telenovela is basically the prize for the producer.

One of the stations is reairing Pura Sangre (?) which had it's first ep last night and starts it's regular time at 11:00 PST. Sorry, don't know what station. This is the TN that MEPS was based on for those who don't know. I caught bits and pieces of it last night and the parts I saw were recreated almost exactly the same by MEPS.

Pura Sangre is on Mundo Fox.

There is a Mexican government supported film institute, IMCINE [Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia].
Also, don't know if it's true, but I've heard that the big multiplexes in Mexico are required to devote a certain amount of screen time to independent/experimental type film.
Premios, there seemed to be a conscious effort to spread the wealth around. Vivi, wondering, how did you post the winners over on AV before the "LIVE" show aired?
Clara

Clara- Are you on the West Coast? I'm in the East. They probably aired it with a delay out West.

Do you know which films have had the financial support of IMCINE? Any we've seen here in the States, in art houses/small theaters most likely? It took somehting like 3-4 years for Labios Rojos to be released.

No, Vivi, I'm in NY. I was struggling to stay awake after 11 to see the big prizes, and I noticed your post was 10:30. No matter, but they made such a fuss about it's being the first time it was aired live.
IMCINE, sorry I don't know much about it, just that it exists. I did a quick check and saw a press release from the President's office celebrating IMCINE for 30 years, with a mission statement that includes support for the production, distribution, and exhibition of Mexican film both domestically and internationally, but I don't know the titles of any specific films that were released here.
Clara

I think classic status is the main motive for perfection.

The best novelas Televisa has ever produced are the ones that can be shown again 20 years later. That means they are about universal human stuff and so whether they are clothed in the latest fashions or are novelas de epoca don't matter. This also means keeping the dialogue free of the latest colloquialisms. That's why the US cult hit Dark Shadows still works despite the 1960s clothes and primitive special effects.

I want Carla Estrada to do the next version of that!

Clara- NovelasLounge already had the winners listed by 10:30pm and the acceptance videos were all up on Uni's site before 11pm. Since I didn't watch it on tv, not sure when they wrapped up there.

I would suppose that IMCINE provides some funding but probably can't provide all the funding to back every movie. The producers likely still have to find most of the funding from other/private sources.

Anita: thank you so much for the info. It's good to know who are responsible for my fav TNs so I can watch out for their new ones

Honestly, I would have preferred Lucero over Refugio Chavero (Vicky Ruffo) since I LURVED it when she stuck it to Plutarco. Speak of the devil, Pluto WAS villainous but Cesar Evora was a psycho to the end. Zerboni was kinda lame and I never really saw him. I liked how Lety still won when she was outdid in villain shots by Sabine killing and beating someone with drowning and a stick. I kinda think Mariana (REBE!!!) was a strong one but I relate with her when she got fired, I got kicked out of school but I am moving on LOL. I was rooting for mah gurl Blanca G. to win since I relate with Alfonsina too LOL. If Ferdy didn't win, I was hoping for Eddy to. I would have LOVED for Jaime Camil to win since he was a drag show for the whole novela ALOMST and much more but you live and learn LOL. PESE wining mejor novela was a good one since they kept early stories in and didn't forget about them along the wild ride that one was. Solo Un Suspiro was pretty catchy. I think Amor Bravio was PERFECT but Abismo de Pasion had actualy deserved adaptacion since they got the Carmina/Dinorah scene right. I wanted Leoncerdo to win mejor primer actor but Macho won and I didn't mind since him and Blanca ARE superb when put together. Either way, this was a good one since all choices got a chance.

and Lucero Suarez had done suepr duper on Querida Enemiga. I think Ana Layevska got skipped on mejor protagonica for 2009 since she moved to Telemundo (SN sitch before it was SN.) That one had heavy moments but balanced them with warm and loving scenes.

Corazon Salvaje- Well Leti beat Sabine's scene beating and drowning Kenya, with a scene of her pushing her son and his girlfriend over a cliff to their fiery deaths, and being cool as a cucumber about it. Sabine's character was BSC. Leti's character was cold, calculating, evil and truly villainous. I wouldn't have had a problem with if Sabine had won, but Leti was really sent chills down the spine.

Cutting someone's tongue out has to top it all & Isa did it first.

I forgot Lucero was a late entry, she would have been my choice since the idiots didn't nominate SN.

Wow, thanks! Very interesting.

Thanks for this post Anita. I will have to find some of these TNs.

Thanks to you all for posting these lists. It looks like 2012 was the final year for too many producers!

Victoria Ruffo is so wooden as an actress. I have seen her in novelas where she did well but the scripts were really good so who pays off whom so she wins so many prizes?? I began to think the same of Thalia who was the darling of Mexico. I never saw the enormous appeal she had either.

At least Por Ella Soy Eva got the mejor novela prize, there is some justice in this system.

Cheryl--Maybe not so much as final but as in the end of the year. We've heard about some that are planned, some in production, some in the can, some already broadcasting in Mexico, but I thought I'd wait until we actually start seeing them here.

Ohhh, I thought it was the death year! Excuse me for not reading carefully.

I like DARK SHADOWS and I didn't like LABIOS ROJOS. I am watching CdeL and is not that good. I watch it because I make fun of it with my friends, so ridiculous!! They laugh when I twist my mouth and say (pretending I am Maribel Guardia): No amiga, que no te humillen!!

Someone is trying very hard to turn a lie told 10 times into a truth and Ruffo is not all that! The TN is ridiculous and the casting too, everything! My guess is that she is trying to become what her ex-mother in law was: A real first actress from the time when people won those titles because they knew the craft.
NOt because they were popular...

Thanks, all, for so much interesting information!

I am not watching anything with a Caray, Caray blog site, so missing you all. Catch you soon, I'm sure, when something else grabs me.

Am I reading this correctly? Libre Para Amarte is taking over MPV and Quiero Amarte won't start until PSMA is over?

Sara--I'm not sure of the order. They will plug one of these into the slot being vacated by the first one to finish. I'm under the impression that LQLVMR is in for the long haul--we have more than 100 episodes to go.

I'm not watching the other three, so I'm not sure how many episodes are left for each one.

PSMA is going to be about 140, but Univision is doing one of their chop jobs on it. I assume they want it to end faster so they can put something else in its place. La Gata will replace PSMA in Mexico May 5 so I also assume Univision would like to get La Gata started in the early summer. Historically they do well when the other major networks are airing reruns.

LQLVMR is doing well so they won't chop that one up unless it's to censor sex scenes.

I am hoping QPob gets moved to the 7PM EST slot when MPV ends.

I'm still anxious to know when LPA will air? I heard its to star Gloria trevi and Gabriel Soto. Ever since I heard about it last year I've been anxious to watch it.

It's on YT. Probably Univisión considered it was not worth their time...

Juanita

Could you please explain why you listed "La Reina del Sur" as your favorite novela above those of Carla Estrada: Amor Real, Pasion, and Alborada.

I'm looking for something to watch next but if "La Reina del Sur" is all about narcos then I think I'll beg off; even though several people listed it as a recommendation on the "Recommended Telenovelas" section. However, Carla Estrada's novelas where the most highly recommended

For me it all depends the mood I am on. I enjoyed INFAMES but I know I would never watch something as hardcore as EL SEÑOR DE LOS CIELOS. Even when Telenovelas are like dishes and one can have beans when we get tired of chicken, I am mainly attracted by comedies than drama or period pieces. If in the meantime something jumps in front of me and I like the cast or the story, I am in.
