Capitulo
8, Part 2 & 9: The Cock Will Crow
Lo
del pasado
Jorge Alfredo auditions for Don Concho, forced by Oscar to sing "Jalisco, no te rajes." Don Concho imposes the ridiculous condition that failure will also result in Maria being fired. Jorge Alfredo tells Oscar that if he passes, Oscar can no longer call him "pochito." He seems to fail.
Lo
de nuevo (Capitulo 8, Part 2)
JNTR
Bar: Jorge Alfredo does his best imitation of Alejandro
Fernández, holding a long note without the microphone, shocking the
hell out of Oscar and Don Concho, who glare back at him. He
defiantly grabs the mike and finishes the song with a vengeance to
the delight of everyone in the room but Oscar and Don Concho, who
looks like he's trying desperately to save face. Mirna makes some
token applause [WTF is her problem??] while Elvira needs a
drool mask à la Leoncerdo from AB. Even the band stops to applaud.
Don Concho finally gets up and tells Maria and Jorge Alfredo he wants
to see them in his office after he has a word with Mirna. Oscar
steps in front of him, saying first he wants to talk to him on behalf
of the guys. Concho agrees and exits to some minor-key suspense leitmotif. Oscar kicks over a chair
before exiting behind him, showing that somehow the cock of the
walk's feathers have been ruffled big time. The waiter laughs in
grito fashion as he approaches the bar, saying “It looks like the
gringo isn't bad at singing rancheras” and the bartender comments
[I think] on how the females are all batting their eyelashes
at him, so he seems to agree. Fernando Milamores congratulates Jorge
Alfredo by putting his sombrero on him for a minute and we see that
Jorge Alfredo has won the approval of the rest of the band. The
saucy-wench waitresses all stare at him; they know an alpha male when
they see one. They all comment on how they can see what Maria sees
in him.
“I
told you you could do it,” Maria says to him. He is astounded that
she would have accepted being fired if he had failed. She tells him
she believes in him. Some romantic background music as he says he can't begin to enumerate what she's
done for him. A casi beso and he kisses her forehead again,
restraining himself once more. Lourdes and Elvira sit at another
table and it's obvious that the apple hasn't fallen far from the
tree; Mama is something of a ramera herself. Despite having none
herself she seems to know class when she sees it and wonders why
Jorge Alfredo is singing in a bar. Elvira isn't thinking past her
hormones and the two conspire on how they will coerce Don Concho into
allowing Elvira to pursue Jorge Alfredo.
Office:
Oscar is very annoyed at what just happened as Mirna enters,
singing Jorge Alfredo's praises. She points out how impressed the
female employees were and how this man is a gold mine. Oscar
reluctantly begins making very understated concessions but Don Concho
is convinced that Jorge Alfredo has the best voice since Maria's
father's. Oscar gets a bit defensive, saying that while this guy
sings more or less well, it takes years to become a mariachi and the
jefe should be concerned with the reputation of his establishment.
Mirna, however, thinks that Don Concho should give Señor Vargas a
chance. Oscar starts saying that his guys won't take kindly to a
stranger invading their turf [Speak for yourself, Oscar!] but
Don Concho doesn't sound like this fools him. They'll deal with it.
Oscar sensibly gives up, excuses himself, and exits. Don Concho
sighs a bit, as though he just realized what he's taken on.
Men's
Dressing Room: The guys vocalize and have a good laugh. Oscar
returns and Fernando seems to realize that Oscar's feathers have been
ruffled, maybe stepped on. “El Pocho” has been hired and that's
that. Oscar tells them that coming in is one thing; staying is
another. He intends to make his life hell. The others joke with
that and go into a verse of “Despacito.” Fernando gives him a
piece of advice: Keep rivals very close. Oscar decides his luck
has returned because he can pluck the feathers off this little
rooster [Perhaps he needs eyeglasses to see what he's really up
against]. Two of the guys make bird noises and they laugh.
Office:
Don Concho is obviously not going to pay Jorge Alfredo what he
is paying the (more experienced) others por lo pronto depending on how the public likes him, which Maria
considers to be unfair. Not only that, he has to be on serenata
call. It's a wee bit uneasy, but Jorge Alfredo doesn't fight it.
He tells Maria he needs the work to make the money to get back to Los
Angeles as soon as possible and he's alright with this. Don Concho
reminds him that he will have to dress like the others, though, which
means he will need a traje de charro. Maria is put in charge of
getting him one. They exit. Mirna looks like she will follow them,
but Concho stops her and tells her to call the charro shop to make sure Jorge Alfredo doesn't get a discount so it will take him longer to pay off the debt.
He's going to make it difficult for Señor Vargas to leave Mexico
because he intends to keep him employed there as long as he can!
Corridor:
Maria tells Jorge Alfredo he caved too easily and he could have
gotten Don Concho to pay more; he will need money to pay his room
rent, bills, and the rental of the traje. He's not sure what he
just fell into and knows he will have trouble working with Oscar. As
Maria exits to talk to Oscar, Jorge Alfredo/Santos thinks about his friends in jail and his own family honor.
[Capitulo
9]
Oscar's
Dressing Room: He's not happy either at the prospect of working
with Jorge Alfredo, but wants to talk to him alone “so he can't
hide behind your skirt.” [Ay, por supuesto he should be smart enough to realize that this is a statement against penile interest.] Maria isn't pleased at this remark but
exits to make way for this confrontation. After another childish
power play about requesting permission to enter and Jorge Alfredo
addressing him as “Don Coloso”, Oscar lets him know that he takes
50% of what Jorge Alfredo will earn doing serenatas on commission.
[We think that Jorge Alfredo has taken enough humiliation for a
month, let alone a day.]
Musicians'
Dressing Room: The three younger guys speculate on how long it
will take Oscar to drive the new guy out; Susanito thinks it will be
about a week. Fernando tells them not to count on it. Susanito asks
why and he tells them that it's obvious that Maria has it bad for the
new guy; you can always tell. He is absolutely sure.
Maria's
Dressing Room: The waitresses are telling her she has hit the
lottery with Jorge Alfredo, waxing lustfully poetic
about his good looks, talent, etc. They comment on the red roses. Maria tells them he is only a friend and
will be going home in a few weeks. They're not so sure she isn't
sorry at that prospect. The romantic music is certainly sure of how Maria feels.
Mendoza
Apartment: Amalia tells Mancia she thinks Maria is in love.
Mancia tells her that las cartas nunca mienten and this is normal
anyway. Oscar is just jealous because he hasn't been successful with
Maria. Amalia is still not happy about this, talking about the
perfidy of men while glancing at the enshrined traje de charro.
[Methinks she should just sing “Rata de dos patas” and get it
out of her system.]
Maria's
Dressing Room: Maria says she will miss him terribly when he
leaves. The others are sure she's in love.
Mendoza
Apartment: Mancia tells Amalia she should tell her daughters the
truth. Amalia refuses to ruin the image they have of their father,
going on about how Pedro destroyed her. She is sure that Jorge
Alfredo will do the same to Maria and comments that hell hath no fury
like a mother defending her daughter.
Corridor
at JNTR: The waitresses question her on her symptoms and
determine that she's got it bad [and
that ain't good, at least according to Amalia] .
Oscar's
Dressing Room: Jorge Alfredo asks him why he gets half only to
be told that he's not ready for more. But Jorge Alfredo tells him he
realizes this is all about his having humiliated him in front of Don
Concho and the rest of the staff. Oscar tells him things won't stay as they are and he intends to make
his life hell until he splits the scene. However, Jorge Alfredo
tells him he won't fall for this, letting him know he isn't dealing
with a fool.
Somewhere
Backstage: The waitresses continue to tease Maria in a
good-natured way as she picks up a covered tray of food and exits.
Los
Angeles
Commandante
Derecho's Office: Derecho and Curtis speculate on Santos'
whereabouts. They can't decide if it's more likely that he is in
Zacatecas or Mexico City and they are not trusting any information. Their frustration is increasing. They finally decide to pay his family a visit.
Musicians'
Locker Room: Maria brings the food to the musicians, who talk
about Santa Cecelia being the patron saint of mariachis; she teases
them about their appetites as they devour the tortillas (possibly
made by Mancia). Someone comments on her generosity as Fernando
Milamores and Jorge Alfredo arrive. Fernando shows him his locker
and the guys all talk about wanting a better future. Here we finally
meet Jairo “El Aventurero,” who says he wants to have a great
restaurant with marimbas and – por supuesto – mariachis! Others
talk about living with their families again, going places – New
York! – and one even about starting a mariachi school in his home
town. Fernando, after some prompting, says something about helping
mistreated women [OK, so has he figured out his own role in that
problem? We think not.] Jorge Alfredo looks at them all and
tells them that one of these days they will realize their dreams.
Maria says “You speak as though you were the magician who will
grant those wishes.” He pauses for a second, finally saying to
seek their dreams and follow their desires. He looks straight at her
on that last word. Fernando notices this.
Club
Room: Pinchi (the bartender) and the waiter joke around on the
stage as though they were a comedy team, finally introducing Letty,
who performs her song, dancing in some real ramerawear shoes and in
a double-circle skirt with a bare midriff blouse. [We didn't know Rosario Montes had
a sister.]
Garza
Mansion: Justo and Altagracia receive Derecho and Curtis, who
apologize for their timing. They ask if the police have news of
their son, only to be told that he is believed to be using an alias
to confuse people.
Maria's
Dressing Room: Jorge Alfredo arrives as she finishes dressing
and it's clear he likes what he sees [We wonder at the placement
of the eagle on her skirt]. He compliments her, thanks her, finally picking
her up and spinning around. Don Chente approves this because he sings for them. Just as the kiss is about to happen
Mirna arrives in her usual bitchy mood, demanding to know if she
always has to yell at Maria to go out on stage. Maria excuses
herself and rushes out to perform. Jorge Alfredo is about to exit
behind her but Mirna stops him with a “Felicidades, galán!”
indicating she might have some dishonorable thoughts about him. [I
volunteer to be the bookmaker taking bets on the outcome of any future catfight
between her and Elvira.]
Garza
Mansion: Semi-humorous television music underscores Derecho and Curtis' implication that Santos is involved with a
“criminal organization” because of his suspicious movements.
Altagracia demands proof. Justo accuses the two less than brilliant
cops of destroying his family's name and image. Curtis believes that
the money found in the car is adequate proof. Justo doesn't accept
this, pointing out that they are ignoring the evidence that someone
tried to kill Santos. He picks up the forensic report on the crashed
plane, hands it to Derecho, and says that someone messed with the
engine of the plane and whoever that was is the guilty party.
Derecho looks verklempt.
Club:
The show goes on as the dancers go on stage. Elvira gets up from
the table and approaches Jorge Alfredo flirtatiously. He actually
looks a little relieved when Don Concho arrives shortly thereafter to
tell Elvira to rejoin her mother. When she suggests that he invite Jorge Alfredo to join them Jorge Alfredo is sensibly watching the dancers on the stage. Concho tells her that as Jorge Alfredo now works there he
doesn't get to sit with them at the table. Elvira obeys and Don
Concho lays down the law that nobody who works for him is allowed to
mess with his daughter or else [didn't catch the specific
threat but knowing who this actor is it has to be gruesome]. Jorge Alfredo tells him not to worry; his daughter
doesn't interest him. This satisfies Don Concho, who then goes about
his business.
Garza
Mansion: This evidence has not entirely convinced Commandante
Derecho, who talks about the Mafia and how they don't like losing $10
million. Justo tells him he will turn Santos in if Derecho can bring
him proof of Santos' involvement. He admonishes them to bring him
better evidence before Derecho and Curtis take their leave,
embarrassed.
Club:
Elvira is a bit frustrated at being foiled in her seduction
attempt and Don Concho doesn't make that any better by coming to the
table and letting her know she is not to mess with the help. Lourdes
has by now done a total about-face, saying she had thought Jorge
Alfredo was rich, but now referring to him as a “muerto de hambre”,
saying she will not have her daughter marrying a “Don Nadie.”
[Ay, will she eventually be in for a shock.] Elvira, however,
has other ideas.
Kitchen:
The chefs dish up food as we learn that the straight-haired
waitress has the hots for Fernando. Pobrecita.
Club:
Jorge Alfredo hangs out at the bar observing the activities
while Elvira observes him. Lourdes turns her head back to face her
when she notices that. Pinchi suggests that Jorge Alfredo take
himself elsewhere to spare somebody annoyance. Jorge Alfredo ignores
him as the stage clears the way for Oscar. He dedicates his next
song to his “hermano del alma” Jorge Alfredo, then launches into
“El Rey” as he descends from the stage and walks up to him at the
bar. Jorge Alfredo knows what this is all about and so does Maria,
who looks upon this scene with disapproval. Jorge Alfredo keeps his cool through all this despite the temptation to get pugilistic. The audience applauds Oscar's performance [We do hope he recorded this song] and Maria gives him a dirty look as the
musicians leave the stage.
Office:
Mirna tells Concho that Oscar is very jealous and Concho
comments that he doesn't like competition. He talks about them as though they were a pair of roosters. We also learn that Mirna and Concho
have their own booty calls. [No surprise but we do ask to be spared the details just in case.]
Mendoza
Apartment: As Amalia, Paloma, and Isabel prepare for la Dia de
los Muertos, one of them gets a photo of Pedro that we don't see and
Isabel asks their mother if she loved their fathers muchissississimo.
She says yes, but we know from her expression that she's lying
through her teeth. Paloma gets soñadorada over her crush and we see
that the only clear head in this room is Isabel's as she asks Amalia
why she doesn't like Jorge Alfredo. Amalia says it isn't that; it's that she thinks he is
hiding something. She cautions Paloma that in love there is
suffering. Isabel says something about constant fighting and Almira chides her. [¡Ay, dios mio!]
Reyes
Apartment, Rodrigo's Room: “My only love was your father,”
Gloria tells him. He tells her that he used to wish for a father,
but she's enough for him; she had been Mother and Father at the same
time. She's happy to have a loving son, but asks whether he isn't
curious to meet his father. He asks why his father never sought him
out, never came to meet him. So he is eager to meet him... not. [TN
Cliché #10: He
will within the next five episodes.]
Musicians'
Dressing Room: Fernando says they have an upcoming serenata in
Santa Fe; Oscar points out that they have inadequate transportation
to get there; his vehicle is out of commission. Someone suggests
they get a mechanic and why not Jorge Alfredo? Oscar becomes
insulting again, saying he knows nothing, not even how to hold hands
with a woman. Speak of the magician and he appears, saying of course
he is a mechanic.
Outside:
Jorge Alfredo removes his jacket, which Maria takes from him.
He rolls up his sleeves while Susanito holds the light for him. As
we flies on the wall hold our breath he actually seems to know what
he's doing, quickly finishing and telling Oscar to start it up.
It starts, Oscar glares at him as he closes the front hood and wipes off his hands on a rag. Fernando
rags on him to pay Jorge Alfredo for this work. Reluctantly he does,
forgetting deliberately that he was no longer to address him as
“pochito.” Jorge Alfredo extends his hand... and withdraws it
just as Oscar did before. Somehow Oscar ends up with the grease rag in his
hands, which he throws down on the sidewalk, annoyed. He gets back
into the car so they can make it on time to this gig. Fernando makes
a joke about this being like throwing down the glove to challenge
someone to a duel and after another sarcasm I didn't get they're off.
We hear the theme song as Maria helps him back on with his jacket.
He stares down at their shadows commenting on she is so close but so
far away. She sees what he's looking at and moves farther away,
then closer so their shadows touch, then closer until she stumbles
into him. They look into each other's eyes again, get closer, and
closer and Don Vicente sings for them but.... Jorge Alfredo kisses
her forehead again as he looks both wistful and pensive as he stares
past her.
Half
Moon.
Mendoza
Apartment, Outside: Jorge Alfredo has walked Maria home and
they talk about seeing each other in the morning to get him his traje
de charro. [10,000 pesos says he gets the enshrined one.]
She tries to offer him some money because what Oscar paid him won't
cover the rent, but he refuses. He just wants to see her beautiful
face every day. She is so glowing at this statement she should be
modeling vestidos de novia. We think they'll finally kiss when...
he kisses her forehead and she goes inside. They both remain still
for a moment with the same obvious thought as the romantic music comes back for them. He puts his hand against
the window on the door; she turns around and matches it.

Some of the slang is really hard to follow and/or translate cuz some of these words just don't show up in the average dictionary, and I can go three or four places at times and try differing key words of the phrases and still get nada.
Anyway, I was glad to read how JS had gotten help in learning to sing with the right type of emphasis for these particular songs. His voice even the first time was good, but he was purposely not putting the proper umph into it. So I got the feeling when I watched the whole scene from the beginning again that he didn't want Maria getting fired because he'd blown it, so that spurred him on to throw caution to the winds and to "go for it" during that tryout IMO.
BTW, I've been hit with mariachi-itis and now I'm turning on Pandora and hearing all of these classics. Very invigorating when having to get through the daily grind, ya know?

Which makes me wonder if anyone is going to take offense at that. Amalia was willing to sell it because they need money and she will be really upset if Maria gives it to Jorge Alfredo because it has to have been expensive.
Don Concho is likely to recognize it; I will guess that Fernando will, too. We don't know when Pedro died (or disappeared) so I'm not quite ready to say that Oscar will recognize it.

I wonder if they have asked Pablo to 'tone it down' a bit in his singing so that the singing of 'Jose Alfredo' will appear better than 'Coloso's.

I don't know who dubbed Jorge Salinas for that scene, but it wasn't a bad choice. In the normal way of things only Alejandro Fernandez would be able to beat Pablo in this sort of competition.
In view of what had happened with Pablo's singing in FELS I am surprised that Mejia is allowing him to sound like himself here. I was half-expecting something different. Had I written this series I might have made Oscar older, perhaps with voice problems and a real reason to resent Santos.

Anon, unfortunately, not all places where people use credit cards would have surveillance cameras... so unless whoever it was that used his card looked overly suspicious, or it was a major store, i doubt they would have film from that.
On another note, everyone be careful going out there, they just found 4 'suspicious devices' at or near a mall and day care center in east Orlando. I am west of there, between Orlando and Winter Garden. surely our 'peace of mind' has been affected by all these events recently. Prayers go to the victims and relatives.

If I can screw that up maybe I shouldn't be doing this. I hate making mistakes. You probably are right regarding the comment about his hands; rich guys get manicures while auto mechanics usually have grime under and in between the layers of their nails that doesn't come out easily.

I think Jorge Salinas is not being dubbed. If my poor interpretation skills are in the ballpark, I believe he has been practicing and it has been a challenge for him. Here is a link. Please let me know if my interpretation skills are as bad as I suspect :-)

So much the better, then. This is not easy music and this would be an opportunity to improve on the original. It would have been completely absurd to cast actors who can't sing rancheras when they have guys like Pablo Montero and Pedro Fernandez on the payroll. I know that Jorge Salinas has been on the musical stage but learning this in his 40s is highly commendable and makes him all the more admirable.

(I went back and watched the very first episode and I heard Bruno and Arnold talking about the hidden money during the raid. Bruno said he hadn't had time to remove it from the car because it had been delivered late and since Mike was going to be getting the car that night, he couldn't get near it. The Godfather wasn't going to be too pleased to lose the money. So we know there *is* a criminal organization somewhere in the background.)
I suspect Santos' friend Rigoberto, the truck driver, sold the medallion and is now acquiring "stuff" with cash to put in his future house. But if he's using cash, how are the popos tracing him? Santos didn't give him his credit card number--all Santos had on him was the medallion and wet cash.
I knew Santos was going to fix the car. Except that he needed it, he should have refused the cash from Colosso--just to be one up on him. At least he gave him the unshaken hand.
I'm really enjoying the stage numbers and the singing--more than I thought I would.

Remember that Santos' wallet was stolen a couple of episodes ago. The thieves are probably trying to max out the card before he reports it stolen; they have no clue that there is a very good reason he can't.
Rigoberto sold the medallion, but I doubt they know this unless it can be identified by an engraving or something like that. I was tempted to think that Santos was foolish for giving it away, but at the time he had no clue he was going to end up on the run.

I don't think Salinas is singing on his own, he must be dubbed, at least in some, if not all, of the songs. Otherwise, why are they hiding his mouth / face in most of the songs? if he was signing on his own there would be no need to do that. we see the mic covering up his mouth so we don't see any mistimings of his lips with the voice singing.

Carlita, I read the article that you linked to. Jorge said that he did his own singing twice so far... that was him singing (which I missed) the first time he attempted Jalisco no te Rajes and another time (which we haven't seen yet) when he sings to Maria after a breakup. He did say that of course he had to learn not only the words of the songs that he appears to be singing but the proper interpretation of the songs to appear authentic. That's more less what he said.

Some of the slang is really hard to follow and/or translate cuz some of these words just don't show up in the average dictionary, and I can go three or four places at times and try differing key words of the phrases and still get nada.
Anyway, I was glad to read how JS had gotten help in learning to sing with the right type of emphasis for these particular songs. His voice even the first time was good, but he was purposely not putting the proper umph into it. So I got the feeling when I watched the whole scene from the beginning again that he didn't want Maria getting fired because he'd blown it, so that spurred him on to throw caution to the winds and to "go for it" during that tryout IMO.
BTW, I've been hit with mariachi-itis and now I'm turning on Pandora and hearing all of these classics. Very invigorating when having to get through the daily grind, ya know?

I believe what got him 'going' after the first 1/3 of the Jalisco no te rajes song was not only that Maria had put her job on the line for him, and also that Coloso teased him with 'the song turned out too big for you, Pochito??'
That is when he takes a huge breath and begins the long retained 'AAAYYY' note and the rest of the song. Also, he knew the chances of getting a job elsewhere would be slim to none, so even though he had never seen himself as a 'mariachi', when life gives you just lemons, you gotta make lemonade.

In a way, it might also have had to do with his own feelings toward Maria and his knowing that Coloso and Ruben would keep on pushing her until she end up giving in to either of them.
I don't think he likes much of what he has seen from Don COncho. Also, he still believes he will be able to go home soon And once he can clear his name up, he can return for her.

Loved this recap UA. I too got a Rog vibe from the previews with the yelling and screaming lol. Speaking of which, I thought for sure that Jorge/Alfredo and Maria were going to kiss. No go. Yet. Love this music in this novela too.

From the little they gave us on their backgrounds (each from el extranjero), it doesn't seem as though any of them learned any car mechanic skills.
At this point in their careers, at least for Coloso, fixing a car would be beneath him.

I think there are something like 5 rooms we've seen backstage. Maria and Oscar each appear to have their own private dressing rooms--not sharing one room like I originally thought. There's a locker room for the saucy wenches, a locker room for the mariachis, and then I think the room that everyone gathers in most is more of a green room.
Seriously? All that was wrong with the Mariachimobile was a loose spark plug?
I'm also really curious about the traje's cost in comparison to expected wages.
And, yes, please, let's hear someone sing Rata de Dos Patas before this is all over!
