Corazón Indomable #11, 5/27/13: Tragedia Amorosa

This evening the good folk of Tamaulipas have decided to put on a show for us. They will treat us to their version of the lovers’ tragedy, Othello. The role of Othello will be played by Octavio. Desdemona by Maricruz. Cassio by Jose Antonio. And since we can’t have enough evil, the role of Iago will be played by a combination of Lucia, Ester, Ewsebio and Awfelia. Hopefully, no one will die in the Tamaulipas version of this tale.

It’s Ewsebio’s turn to continue the Miseducation of Maricruz Olivares. Today’s lesson: teach your cheating man a lesson, by cheating on him with a peon, or at least pretending to. Maricruz is quick to believe that Octavio has been snogging Ester by the river (it IS his M.O. after all), and now that flirtatious ho is on her death list. But Mari’s reluctant to play games by pretending to have her own luvah. In any case, just who would the fortunate peon be? He wouldn’t happen to be a bearded, rapist troll, with a whip and scratchy voice, would he, hmmmm? Nope. Ewsebio says he wasn’t thinking of himself, but there are tons of hunky peons around, just salivating at the opportunity. Meanwhile, upstairs in the big house, Lucia and the ho in question, are discussing the same thing. Lucia has her doubts that Maricruz would ever cheat on Octavio though.

Octavio comes home with some good news for Lucia about the ranch, finally—they’ll have access to some high quality stud bulls to strengthen their cow stock, and will have a new crop to plant. He and Miguel will have to do much of the work, however, since there are so few workers left at the ranch. Octavio chalks it all up to faith and hope (uhm…we haven’t seen a whole lot of that on this ranch, but ok), and this now means he will be at the ranch quite a while. NOT what Lucia wanted to hear. She thought bubbles: “That’s what you think, but you don’t know what awaits you!” Bwahahaha!!!

“A fellow almost damned in a fair wife.” – Othello, Act 1, Line 22
Octavio heads upstairs to his sex slave/child bride/wife, and finds her and Moctavio sulking on the bed. He wonders why she’s angry with him now. She answers him by laying some forceful passionate kisses on him, ending one of them with a non-love bite, and telling him that no one else’s kisses could rock his world like hers do—she is THE BEST! Octavio doesn’t argue the point. She then examines him from head to toe and sees a suspicious mark on his neck, which he can’t examine, now that they have no mirror in their room. He promises that Ester will only be there for a few days, but Maricruz is certain that the ho has a big, dumb, hunky reason to stay for a long time.

In the stables, Ewsebio convinces Jose Antonio, aka Hunky Peon, that the patron wants him to give Maricruz horse riding lessons. Maricruz trusts him the most, and the patrones want her to be less of a savage idiot. Hunky Peon immediately comes to her defense and says she just wasn’t educated. She’s the most beautiful and good woman he’s ever known. (Gosh, I like this guy. Can we trade him in for our galan?) Ewsebio accuses him of having more than friendly feelings for Maricruz.

Yay! It’s dinnertime in the big house. Maricruz surprises everyone by coming down for dinner, and they all surprise me by not providing another confrontational humiliating experience for her. Instead, this dinner is all about setting her up for future disgrace. Ester “helpfully” suggests that Mari learn to ride a horse—she’s already asked Jose Antonio to help her. This way Mari, and not the ho, can go riding with Octavio. Lucia is “supportive” of this idea and even offers Mari the use of a pair of her riding pants. But she reminds Mari that she is Mrs. Octavio now, and can’t gallivant about like a single girl. Hmmm…

The next day, Jose Antonio starts Horses 101 with Maricruz. (My oh my, doesn’t he look scrumptious in between those two pretty horses?) Maricruz must first learn to build trust with her horse, which at this point means gingerly touching his nose and giggling. Ok, she’s no horse whisperer, but we have to take baby steps. He helps her on the horse, and then easily hops/hurdles on to his.

Meanwhile in the big house, the two witches plot and plan their matchmaking between Maricruz and Jose Antonio. They are sure something will happen between these two, plus Ewsebio already passed on the gossip that Jose Antonio has a thing for Mari. Ester is sure that Octavio will react like any man with a cheating wife—violently.

“I will wear my heart upon my sleeve.” – Othello, Act 1, Line 68
Maricruz and Jose Antonio take a break from riding to share a few laughs. He helps her back onto her horse and sweetly tells her that she gets more beautiful each day. No wonder Octavio married her. Despite being badly dressed (desarreglada), Octavio was still able to see her great inner beauty. Mari hopes so, because she really loves the guy, and wants to learn to be more like him. Jose Antonio doesn’t know why she wants to be like those jerks in the big house. He tells her he’ll take her to a really pretty place in the mountains once she learns to ride better. They head home, where Ewsebio is waiting to put more inappropriate ideas into Jose Antonio’s head about romancing Maricruz. Jose Antonio refuses, but looks thoughtful/hopeful about the possibility of Mari falling for him during their lessons.

Mari visits Abuelo Ramiro and Sad Solita and tells them about the riding lessons with Jose Antonio. Abuelo immediately thinks about the possibility of misunderstandings, by both Jose Antonio and Octavio. Maricruz brushes off the possibility. Both Jose Antonio and Octavio know how she feels about her husband.

Ester disturbs Octavio’s quiet time on the terrace to plant seeds of jealousy and distrust in his mind. He should be thanking her since his wife’s riding lessons have kept her busy and out of all of their hair ALL day, EVERY day. But isn’t he worried about young, hot Jose Antonio, who’s from the same class as Mari? Octavio claims he doesn’t do jealousy. Plus, Maricruz is transparent and an open book. Every day she tells him everything she did or discussed with Jose Antonio. He loves that she’s enjoying her lessons so much. Ester is not pleased that Operation Drive Octavio Mad with Jealousy, is not working.

Out by the river, Maricruz and Jose Antonio are taking a break and skipping stones on the water, while Ewsebio spies on them. They race on foot like two kids, and Ewsebio chuckles that all is going according to plan. Jose Antonio tells Mari that he wishes they had spent time together like this before she married Octavio. This goes right over Mari’s head and she asks if she’s good enough to go riding with Octavio yet. Nope, not yet. They race back to the horses.

“…as tenderly be led by the nose as asses are.” – Othello, Act 1, Line 419
Well, looks like at least one of Ester’s jealousy seeds took root. Now it’s Octavio’s turn to wait in the bedroom sulking, when Mari enters. He draws close to her and wants to know if Mari still loves him, or has she gotten bored with him? She says of course not, but then prattles on about the great Jose Antonio, who says she still needs more lessons with him before she can go riding with Octavio. Hmmm…When Octavio spots a mark on her neck, she claims it must have happened when she was racing with Jose Antonio. Octavio’s jealousy meter shoots way up, but he tries to justify it by scolding Mari with some b.s. about the proper way a married woman should behave. “Do you like (gustar) Jose Antonio? Answer me.”

Maricruz says she won’t play with Jose Antonio anymore if that’s what Octavio wants, but she thought he wasn’t the jealous type, or is he? Octavio backs off and claims again that he isn’t jealous and doesn’t like anyone acting jealous of him either. Uh huh. Mari says all of this would be solved if he were the one riding with her and giving her lessons, instead of riding with that ho Ester. Octavio refuses to be wrong, so the two of them pout like children about the situation.

In Ester’s room, the two wicked witches…Oh wait! Is that a Murphy Bed?! That is so cool the way it flipped up on its own like that to reveal a huge colorful painting on the other side! Now I have to go back and listen to what the two witches were saying. Blah, blah…have to do something to make Octavio jealous of Mari and Jose Antonio, like sending him an anonymous note. Ester will pay off Jose Antonio to be part of the dirty plan. After they get rid of Mari and Octavio, Ester will get on her broomstick and fly back to her witchdom in the west. Lucia worries that this comedy could easily become a tragedy. A while later, Ester reads Lucia the anonymous, your wife is screwing someone else, letter she wrote.

“O, beware my lord, of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster.” –Othello, Act 3, Line 191
Octavio is channeling Maricruz today. He’s curled up in the fetal position on the bed clutching his pillow, while Mari asks him what’s wrong. He supposedly has a headache, but no worries, Ester already tended to him while Mari was gallivanting about and playing games with Jose Antonio. Oh no she di’in! Maricruz is out for blood and flies to the door to go teach that ho a lesson about staying away from her man! Poor Moctavio, who for the last 10 minutes has been trying to open the door to escape these two immature loonies, has the bejeezus scared out of him by Octavio dragging Mari away from the door and their loud argument. Moctavio jumps into Mari’s arms for comfort. It’s a stalemate between Maricruz and Octavio for now.

Later in the kitchen, even Maria has something to say to Maricruz about these scandalous riding lessons. She, like Abuelo, doesn’t think it’s proper for a married woman to be off riding and spending alone time with a young, hot peon.

Oh gross! The not so young, and certainly not hot, Ewsebio sucks face with Awfelia, who is passing on the message from the witches that they will pay Jose Antonio five-thousand pesos to seduce Maricruz. And they have another job for Ewsebio. Ewsebio unsuccessfully pushes for ten-thousand pesos for Jose Antonio (surely planning to take a 5K cut for himself), but agrees to pass the message on.

Maricruz decides to take the horse by the reins and goes to the stables to tell Jose Antonio that they can’t continue their lessons because of the wagging tongues of others. She claims that Octavio is not jealous, but she doesn’t want any more gossip. Their friendship will also have to take a back seat. She’s a married woman now. Poor Jose Antonio looks like he lost his only friend. Maricruz decides to take her horse on her own to visit her abuelo and sister.

Clueless to all the intrigues surrounding him, Miguel reports to Lucia how well running the ranch side by side with Octavio is going. Lucia thinks that brotherly bonding is sweet and all, but Maricruz and Octavio still have to go. Miguel demands that she forget all that, but she’s obviously not convinced.

Octavio returns to the ranch and is handed his mail in a TOTALLY non-suspicious manner by Ewsebio. Then the disgusting one starts fantasizing about raping Solita (the Uni version cut out the rape memory), and promising to do it again since no one will know. Blech!!! (I need a shower.)

“Trifles as light as air, are to the jealous confirmations strong as proofs of holy writ.” – Othello, Act 3, Line 364
Maricruz returns home safely and heads up to the bedroom to find Octavio sulking in bed with the, now read, letter in hand. She excitedly tells him about riding by herself. Octavio is suspicious about why she isn’t riding with Jose Antonio anymore. Mari tells him that it isn’t proper for a married woman to go off alone with a young hunk each day. She’ll either go alone, or with him, her husband. Octavio is pleased. Smoochies!

Out in the servants’ quarters, Miguel puts Ewsebio in charge of managing the planting of the alfalfa and making sure the cows and bulls don’t eat the seeds. Ewsebio lies that Jose Antonio won’t be able to help out, since his #1 priority these days is Maricruz. Miguel tells Ewsebio that Jose Antonio has to change priorities and obey orders. Late that night, Ester meets Ewsebio in the stables. He tells her there’s a glitch in the plan since Miguel ordered that they all focus on planting and guarding the alfalfa tomorrow, including Jose Antonio. Ester hands him the envelope with cash (which he pockets) and tells him the plan can’t fail, and he better see to it. He ogles her backside in short shorts as she walks away. He then goes into Jose Antonio’s room and tells him he HAS to take Maricruz out riding tomorrow.

The next day, Jose Antonio and Maricruz have stopped at their usual resting place to chat. She says this has to be the last time she comes out with him. He doesn’t think she should pay attention to other people’s talk—they aren’t doing anything wrong. Plus, he really cares about her. Maricruz says she cares about him too, but other people are bad and say things that aren't true. He approaches her as she speaks with her back half turned to him. Suddenly, a shot rings out and Jose Antonio falls to the ground with a bloody bullet wound in the center of his chest! Maricruz freaks out over him, yelling that someone has killed him and looking around to see who could have done it. She runs off yelling, hopefully to find help.

Maricruz rides back to the hacienda, yelling “they killed him!” all the way. She encounters the three brujas, who pretend to be shocked, and Ester goes running off to presumably get help. Lucia tells Maricruz that it ought to be Octavio that she should worry about, because who knows what he would be capable of doing, knowing his wife was off doing God knows what with the stable boy. Maricruz goes after the chief bruja for this insult and shakes some of her medusa curls loose. Awfelia tries to pry Maricruz off her, but Lucia eggs her on further by saying Octavio for sure shot Jose Antonio because Maricruz was getting it on with him. “Octavio isn’t a killer! I’m going to rip out your tongue!” Lucia runs away into the house for her own safety. Then she complains to Ester about Maricruz coming after her like a fury. (What was she expecting?!) Ester tells her it was worth it. It’s all part of the plan, you see.

Wow! This backwater town actually seems to have a hospital. Or maybe they got Jose Antonio to the next town over? In any case, he’s NOT dead and is actually in a hospital bed receiving competent care from a doctor. The bullet luckily missed his lung, although it was close. And the police have been called! Commander Suarez asks Jose Antonio who shot him. He doesn’t know. He didn’t see anyone, and no, he has no enemies that he knows of. Suarez asks what he was doing in that location at the time. He explains he was with Maricruz talking and taking a rest. The cop wants to know if they were arguing at the time, and jumps to the far flung conclusion that he and Maricruz were arguing, she shot him, and he’s trying to cover up for her! Jose Antonio sticks to his story that Maricruz did not shoot him, but the Commander seems to have his own ideas about how everything went down.

“Heaven truly knows that thou art false as hell.”- Othello, Act 4, Line 48
Back at the ranch, Miguel is telling the two witches that it couldn’t have been Octavio who did it because he was with him all morning, up till Ester came to tell them what happened and then the ambulance came. Lucia doesn’t care-- she cries that she just wants that woman out of her house! “Maricruz hit me!” Miguel must have eaten his Wheaties today because he says he knows Lucia and she must have said something to Maricruz to make her react that way. Lucia claims that all she did was remind Mari that a married woman shouldn’t go traipsing around the countryside with a man who isn’t her husband. It surely caused a lovers’ tragedy! (tragedia amorosa) “What other thing could it be?!” Miguel figures it must have just been a weird accident- a stray hunter's shot.

Octavio arrives home and demands to know where Maricruz is. Miguel says they don’t know. “After she beat me up, she ran away!” *sob, sob* Lucia shows the marks on her arms as proof. Ester backs up her story and says a pregnant woman shouldn’t have to put up with this treatment. Like his brother, Octavio is convinced Lucia said something inappropriate to set Mari off. She repeats her story. Blah, blah, blah…what’s appropriate for a married woman. Octavio repeats that Maricruz has his permission, plus THEY were the ones who suggested Jose Antonio give her riding classes in the first place. She gets bored being stuck in the hacienda all day, they all won’t help him give her refinement lessons, and she tells him everything she does with Jose Antonio anyway. “Todo? Yeah right! She tells you what she wants you to know.”  Miguel interrupts this bitch fest to let them know that they are ALL under suspicion for the shooting, and Octavio is suspect numero uno. Ruh roh!?

“…one that loved not wisely, but too well.” – Othello, Act 5, Line 396
Maricruz, meanwhile, is at the shack crying on Gramps’ shoulder because she thinks SHE’S suspect numero uno. She also doesn’t want to go back home since she left Lucia all shook up, from her well-coifed curly head, down to her platform-clad painted toes. She wants Gramps to go to the hacienda and smooth things over for her with Octavio first.

Octavio calls b.s. on the numero uno suspect thing since he and Miguel know they were together all morning. Ester suggests that Maricruz could have another lover, who took it upon himself to get rid of the man who had taken his place. How does our galan react to the suggestion that his pure as the driven snow wife has not just one, but TWO lovers? If you said, he yells at Ester and tells her where she can take her hot-pants wearing a**, and it better be off his ranch, you’re wrong. He instead says she could be RIGHT! The proof being the “anonymous” letter he received the other day. No, he didn’t show it to Maricruz, because he knows she’s incapable of betraying him and loves him. Blah, blah, blah.

Ester asks if Jose Antonio is just as good and pure of heart. Octavio thinks that if Jose Antonio is in love with Maricruz, he’s done a good job hiding it. Ester lists all of JA’s qualities—young, good looking, hot, easy to get along with, rides well, and has known Maricruz a long time. “Have you realized that in every way, Maricruz is more like him/closer to him than to you?” Octavio is sure Maricruz loves him. Now, where is she? (Let’s see. Where is she every single time she runs away from the hacienda? Think Octavio, think. We know you can use those two brain cells God gave you.)

Over at the SHACK (yoohoo, Octavio!), Mari is having no luck convincing Gramps to go to the hacienda to speak to Octavio on her behalf. Aha! He used those two brain cells after all. Octavio enters the shack and demands to know what Maricruz wants to tell him. He wants to know the truth!

Avances: Lucia worries about getting found out. Ester tells her not to worry. Octavio blames Maricruz for all the crap that's happened. Jerk! He rides off on his horse and Mari faints.

Here are the lyrics to our theme song, which I enjoy both for its fun cumbia rhythm, and also its words of advice to our heroine to dump her useless galan and find a new one, and to leave all the jerks who have hurt her behind.

Déjalo Ir (Let him go) by Margarita La Diosa de la Cumbia

[Coros]

It's like they read the blog about what we DON'T like in a novela, and thought, "Yeah, that sounds good". Or maybe the cop is just so smart, he doesn't have to bother investigating.

Beautiful scenery though. I thought this state was just south of Texas, and this (green mountains all over the place) does not look like the Texas I've seen.

And at least they jumped forward quite a bit and didn't waste too much time on this. And we did learn the proper way to approach a horse: only from the front and then poke its nose a few times.

Kelly

Kelly, it's a pretty sizeable state that stretches south away from TX along the Gulf Coast, so it's not a surprise that parts of the state are quite different from TX. Here's a bit of info I found:

"The central and southern portions of Tamaulipas are mountainous, but there are extensive, fertile plains in the north. The sandy, lagoon-dotted coastal zone is sparsely inhabited. The Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte) defines the Tamaulipas-Texas border, including a narrow strip of territory that extends northwestward between Nuevo León and Texas.

With varied climates and vegetation, numerous crops (sorghum, soybeans, safflower, corn [maize], sugarcane, tobacco, cotton, coffee, wheat, and citrus fruits) can be cultivated, and agriculture is the state’s main economic activity. Tamaulipas has more area of irrigated cropland than any other Mexican state. Fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico are also important sources of income, as are livestock raising, preparation of agave fibres, and copper mining. Tamaulipas produces a large proportion of Mexico’s natural gas and significant quantities of petroleum; petrochemical plants are located in Ciudad Madero and Reynosa."

My very dear Vivi, thanks for that excellent recap. I loved the quotes from Othello. Also, i got a giggle from the hickey checks. Que the hell ? And who wouldn't fall for a ''hot, young peon.''

I found something cartoonish in the TN today:

Wiley E. Coyote is able to spend 5-10,000 pesos to set up a trap to get rid of Roadrunner, instead of using the money for investments and stuff they surely need to not lose the land.

Weird, eh?

That also happened a lot in AV, when they always almost got kidnapped in every episode and thanks to Wiley E. Coyote kidnappers and their ACME traps, they could never accomplish anything!!

Pablo- Unfortunately, it was poor Jose Antonio who got the anvil, in the form of a bullet! I believe the money is Ester's money. But you would think if she has enough money lying around to play cruel games with savages and peons, she could help her cousin's husband out with some cash. Although the cash flow problems of the mortgaged hacienda are probably MUCH greater than a few thousand pesos.

I did see tonight though that Ester is more more evil than Lucia. Lucia thinks she's protecting her little queendom from Octavio and Maricruz. Ester has no stake in all of this-- she's just doing it for fun, and SHE'S the one who though up this whole plan which ends in murder and framing either Mari or Octavio for it. That's way more serious than any of the dirty tricks Lucia had been playing before.

Susanlynn- "And who wouldn't fall for a hot, young peon."

I know, right! Poor guy got the worst end of all of this, no money, no Mari, and shot in the chest on top of it.

Vivi, that was a wonderful recap! I enjoyed the high gloss of Shakespeare overlaying the lame activities of our players. Your editorial comments were perfect for us rude viewers down in the pit. As the bard said in another work, "what fools these mortals be!"

"a bearded, rapist troll, with a whip and scratchy voice" was spot on for Ewwsebio. Not happy that he thinks about going back for another round with Solita.

"Octavio and his child bride"--MC really does seem childlike toward all the people around her. She and Jose Antonio were sweet, just a couple of old friends.

"Ester will get on her broomstick and fly back to her witchdom in the west."

"Now, where is she? (Let’s see. Where is she every single time she runs away from the hacienda? Think Octavio, think. We know you can use those two brain cells God gave you.)"

MC's impetuosity is going to get her into trouble at some point, I'm afraid. So far, she and Octavio have worked things out, but maybe not always?

Wow, Viva, what a great recap and up so quickly. Great lines from Shakespeare but my favorite line is from Vivi:

"Octavio refuses to be wrong..."

I can relate to that.

Kelly,

""...this (green mountains all over the place) does not look like the Texas I've seen."

There's a lot of Texas that doesn't look like Texas.

Thanks to Daisy I've been on the lookout for Lucia's knees... I finally caught a glimpse tonight... not bad... but I'm still captivated by those eyes.

Carlos

Vivi:

Thanks so much for this most marvelous recap and the Othello theme and so quick!

I agree with you about Ester, she is the worse of the two evil witchy poohs. I can't wait until they are caught in all their lies.

Octavio is very obtuse isn't he? Not the monkey of course the human Octavio. How dumb is he? On the one hand he knows how open Maricruz is with him and on the other hand he believes the things Ester and Lucia say to him, que, que what????

I was bothered by Maricruz fainting at the end. Could this mean a possible pregnancy? They have been going at it like, well bunnies. Hmmmm......

This TN is doing all it can to use all I hate about the genre; and it's only been a few episodes.
All the good guys have to be extremely stupid or naive, all the bad guys are flawless in their plot making - heart breaking and everything is BAD, BAD, BAD and insufferable to watch.
At this point I'm rooting for the bad guys to finish driving Maricruz away so we can be done with this part of the TN.

Adriana Noel I totally agree with you, the bad guys are insuffrable, I cannot watch as they humiliate and make fun of poor MC and constantly making her life a hell on earth Octavio not really helping making things better.
Not to mention Solita and Ewwwsebio.
I can't stand these ppl can't, can't, can't...

MC just too trusting and naive, believes everybody and let them use her as a door mat. Stand up for yourself girl!
Octavio as stoopid as Dam stoopid in Abismo.. he's lead by the nose by the wicked witches of the West and can't see the wood for the tree.
Grandpa was right when he spoke to Lucia, MC was poor, ignorant and savage but at least happy and I'm affraid this is not even the worst yet..

I can't wait the new and improved MC getting revenge on Lucia.

Madelaine, I got the same impression on the fainting, as ignorant as MC is I wonder when she'll figure it out..

Me Three. I can't wait 'til they get through this part of the novela. It's quite painful to watch and I may have to rely on recaps until further notice.

Thanks Vivi for the song lyrics. The title of course means "Let Him Go" and that is exactly what I wish Maricruz would do right now. But then there would be no story. The song is the best part of this novela so far.

Oh Vivi, I'm sorry you had such a flop of an episode to recap, but your incredible detail made it possible for me not have to watch it. Thank you sooo much.

Kelly, you said what I would have said. "It's like they read the blog about what we DON'T like in a novela, and thought, "Yeah, that sounds good". Except it's like they read my comment and did just what I hate.

And Adriana Noel, I could have written what you said too. Totally agree.

Great Vivi, tks
Tks for the words to the song

Ck images of Tamaulipas, it's very pretty. Too bad the drug dealers have made it so dangerous.

As I said before, Octavio is an IMBéCIL. He is going to believe an anonymous letter?? yep, he is. His bride was a virgin & now she is a slut? She has known Jose Antonio & they are just now getting it on. Plus some other lover?????

Vivi, you gave him too much credit, 2 brain cells is way overestimated.

I know who shot Jose Antonio, a stray bullet from Los Zetas cartel.
Have they said in what pueblo this is located?
We have an idiot cop that immediately suspects Maricruz???? QTF
Did Maricruz have a gun, was the shot at close range, does Maricruz have residue on her hands???
If she was supposed to have used Jose Antonio's gun, assuming he had one, was it fired? !Santa mierda!

Hurry Eduardo!, although Jose Antonio is a good substitute.
Mrs. Mejia, get a grip on reality.

How far away can Walmart be? I'm sick of Maricruz in that white sack with holes.

Miquel doesn't seem like much of a villain to me, he is aware of Lucia's misdeeds but doesn't know just how far she would go.
He is trying to save the homestead, it's usually the bad guy that is trying to get rid of it.

Very surprised to see the Murphy bed, I was afraid the mono was going to get closed in it. I think they have dropped the Murphy & call them wall beds now.

Octavio believes an anonymous letter and he knows that Lucia wants to break them up.
Why couldn't Octavio give MC riding lessons himself? It can't be because he was working, he was feeling sorry for himself in the bedroom while she was riding.
If MC can borrow some clothes for dinner parties and riding lessons, why can't she borrow a couple more for wearing each day?
I guess we're supposed to be too dumb to wonder about these things.

Cathyx
We are really dumb to watch this dreck. Mrs Mejia has been married to Salvador way too long.

Variopinta- Miguel is definitely more myopic and clueless than he is a villain, like Lucia, Ester, Ewsebio and Awfelia. He's basically just a step down from Octavio, who is really dense.

I think much of this tn will be about Maricruz and Octavio become mature adults and learning how to love. Right now, I think they are infatuated with each other, and they have intense attraction and chemistry—a good start.

Maricruz has Octavio up on a pedestal. He is her everything—everything she does right now is with the purpose of pleasing him. She puts him above herself in everything. Even to the point of starving herself and laying down to die when she thinks he has rejected her. She is truly worthy of being a Shakespearean heroine. Because she is so dramatic about all things Octavio, I don’t necessarily think that her fainting in the previews when he leaves means she has to be pregnant. It could just be Maricruz being her dramatic self. She will have to learn that Octavio is not perfect and has flaws, and that she shouldn’t have to put up with being put down, patronized, or criticized for being who she is.

Octavio treats Maricruz alternately as his plaything, possession, pet or child. I don’t think he really respects her (yet) or thinks of her as a real human being. He will have to learn her real value, and to respect and love her fully.

Cathyx- I think the clothes thing bugs me more than the over the top storyline, which I came in expecting, so I’m enjoying the crazy drama. Once Mari married him and came to live with him, the first thing Octavio would/should have done is get her some basic decent clothing, and at least a pair of sandals or flip flops. It is easy and cheap to by some cloth in the countryside and have the local seamstress/ tailor make a few dresses and skirts. It’s downright criminal for Octavio to let his wife go around in only three changes of rags and no shoes (let’s not even think of the underwear situation).

Anybody else who watched Sortilegio remember how Alex got all that new clothing and jewelry for Maria Jose? Now, that was a galan! (Of course, he had his dense jealous streak too.)

I enjoy the chemistry between Maricruz and Octavio when they are together, despite how their characters are behaving right now. It makes me really look forward to when the two characters have matured and have a relationship on equal terms.

Vivi I love the Othello comparison throughout the recap. Feeding on the jealousy in both Tav and MC, well I hate to say, but right now the smartest characters in this TN are the two evil Witches.

And will SOMEONE help MC do something with her hair. Sorry that wild mane is starting to bug the daylights out of me.

Carlos, maybe in our boredom of watching the same old jealousies play out until we reach that pivotal OMG moment and then head to the future plotlines, we should start a "Knee-sighting" game with Lucia. I'm starting to become obsessed in her wardrobe waiting for that non-maxi moment.

The clothes thing is totally ridiculous, wouldn't the entire family be ashamed that their wife, in-law is seen in rags?
I don't know what the other rag looks like that she must wear when white rage with holes gets washed. The girls always did laundry, just what did they wash, not Maricruz' dress or Ramiro's shirt??

Great recap Vivi. Love your Othello theme. Octavio is such a jerk.In one breath he trusts MC,in the very next breath he believes she is capable of cheating. He is acting as useless as his brother. What kind of a plan did these fools hatch? Shooting JA was to prove what exactly? To me it's not just MC they want to get rid of, but Octavio as well. Permanently. They must know he'll be the first suspect.
The police chief is unbelievable. If that is cartel country then the stupidity of the police makes sense. Sad though. Variapinta, i get your frustration with storyline. For the sake of those of us not familiar with Mexican law enforcement corruption, the producer should do a better job in fiction than what the reality is. Maybe portraying a good law enforcement department could spell danger for her,who knows..

OMG!!! Those two brujas made me so angry last night that I thought I was going to explode. I was hoping
that Maricruz would knock evil eyes
Lucia down and push her nose in the dirt where it belongs. Instead
all that evil eyes got was a little
red mark on her arm. She's a good actor though, judging from her faciel expressions after the confrontration, one would think that Maricruz almost killed her.
Judging from the advances, it looks like the evil eyed bruja succeded in seperating Maricruz y Octavio.

Well, I have vented my anger---now I can read the recap and the comments---more later.
the gringo

Olive- The plan is definitely to get rid of both Maricruz and Octavio. Lucia's original plan was to drive off Maricruz by breaking her and Octavio up (by humiliating Mari). Once Maricruz is no longer part of his life, Lucia believes that Octavio will get bored with ranch life and leave.

Ester has taken it a step further by trying to permanently get rid of one of them for (attempted) murder. Doesn't matter which one gets blamed because when one goes, the other will go. I don't think Miguel will be too pleased to learn that Lucia and Ester have plans to have his brother, or even his brother's wife, framed for murder.

Los Salinas didn't do a very well in their job selections, Elizabeth in this & Jorge in QBA, which I'm sure must be another ridiculous TN.

They must go home at night wondering, what have I gotten myself into? Oh well, it's a paycheck.

Excellent and hilarious recap, Vivi. You had me laughing outloud throughout, but esp. with "Think, Octavio, think" and "yoohoo, Octavio." And I loved the Othello theme.

Re: Alex buying a new wardrobe for his bride on Sortilegio, you reminded me that Ana Brenda Contreras' character Ana Paula on LQNPA also got a new wardrobe from Rogelio. But most of those clothes were so "blah" (esp. compared to her wardrobe on Sortilegio and Teresa) that I thought it was the worst wardrobe she would ever have in a novela, until I saw the rags in this one.

Speaking of borrowing clothing - did anyone else wonder how the riding pants MC borrowed from Lucia fit MC so perfectly, when Lucia is significantly taller than her?

Thanks for posting the lyrics to the song. I thought the song said "una mancha (a stain) en tu memoria" not "un amante". But maybe it's just me hearing it that way.

Pablo - I thought the same thing about the bribe money.

LatinaInMD- I wouldn't be surprised if the lyric site has it wrong. Let me read through the lyrics and see where that is. I didn't give it a careful read after copying it.

LatinaInMD- Yep. Went back and read the lyrics and I am sure you are right because I hear mancha too, and it makes more sense. I made the change.

Latina,
I thought the same things about the pants, Lucia is about a foot taller than Maricruz. If those fit, loan her
some more. I guess Lucia doesn't worry about appearing stingy or worse, broke, with Maricruz in rags.
I'm sure Lucia is one of those that think appearances are everything, which is why the rags just don't make sense.
I don't believe I just said, make sense.

Oh my goodness Vivi...Splendid job bringing in Shakespeare. Perhaps we should improve our Spanish by re-reading his plays en español and abandoning this painful telenovela...for a few weeks anyway.

But you did a righteous job on the recap. "Bearded rapist troll with a whip and scratchy voice" was perfectly put. And glad you noticed Jose Antonio's fine form mounting.....the horse. Really, that guy even beats Colunga in that way he hops right up on the steed. Impressive. And so glad our peon galan is going to survive. Do want to see more of him. But not the brujas!

I don't really get Lucia's plan. Octavio wanted to sell the ranch and get his money out of it. Isn't he just staying and helping (and even Miguel says he's helping) because of Maricruz? If Lucia gets rid of MC, Octavio has no more reason to be at this ranch he doesn't like and could go back to his "sell this thing right now and get my money" plan. And Lucia is out on the streets. Not sure she thought this through.

Now THIS ranch (for AB watchers) would be a great place for a tourist resort! Pretty and no fancy bulls getting in the way.

Kelly

Kelly- You’re right. She hasn’t thought this through. Even before when it was just Octavio, and no Maricruz, just getting rid of Octavio wasn’t going to work. He was still going to bug them about the money, and selling the ranch so that he could get it. Plan 2 was marrying him to someone rich like Simona so that they could solve the money problems AND get Octavio out of the house and off living with his rich wife. Plan 3 was similar to Plan 1 in that the objective was to get rid of Octavio AND Maricruz. Still doesn’t solve the money issue though.

Now that Octavio’s help on the ranch seems to be helping with the money issues (since two stupid heads are better than one), Lucia’s plan makes no sense. Now it’s just about spite. She hates Octavio rocking the boat. She hates not being the only mistress of the house. She hates Maricruz. Her actions are just being fueled by this irrational hate, even if it hurts her own financial interests in the end.

Now, where are Dionisio and Isa when we need them?

Terific recap Vivi---The Othello theme worked great.
So many good parts in your recap. The she's no horse wisperer line was so funny and also the line about Montavio trying to open the door to escape from the two loonies
was hilarious.
Vivi---Thanks for the Tamaulipas info. Now if I can learn how to pronounce it.
Right Antonio got the worst of it--
no money, no Mari and shot in the chest. LOL even though it wasn't funny. The poor guy.
Bearded, rapist, troll with a scratchy voice---excellent
Think Octavio, use your two brain cells.

Variopinta---two brain cells may be way overestimated---you may be right, well at least so far.

Talk about brain cells---I agree with the others here. The local sheriff needs a cell or two.

Good grief, so much complaining.
Maricruz the goddess of sunshine is pretty in her poor white dress with holes. She would look pretty in anything. If she wore it through the whole show, I wouldn't mind at all.
Be patient, Octovio will take her shopping but right now he is helping Miguel run the ranch. Wait until the money starts to come in.
That is if evil eyes and the other bruja don't have them seperated by then.

Good grief again---The goddess has beautiful hair, it has a nice country look. Do you guys want to take her to the beauty shop? Again,
be patient, it's comming.

Moctavio has been trying to escape from that room for the last two episodes. The poor creature really hates being closed up on the set. Is there a declaration that 'no animal has been hurt or mistreated during the filming of this TN"? I can't decide who feels more trapped: Moctavio or Maricruz.

Gringo- I have a thing for wild, free flowing hair too, and don't see a problem with it. But I find that it bugs the heck out of a lot of women. No worries though, because I'm sure "controlled" hair will be one of the main things that make Maricruz 2.0 "unrecognizable." I still think her hubby should have her in non-ragged, if simple, clothing at this stage. I’m sure later she will get to be quite glamorous.

Gringo-
Pronunciation: Tam- Ow- Lee- Pas

MOctavio heard about BIeber,s monkey pal being confiscated by the German authorities and wants to seek asylum from these cracra folks.... run, monkey,run...

Thanks Vivi

I use this site a lot for pronunciation, I have a big problem with those Tl words

I've just started watching this one, and will possibly stick with it--albeit reluctantly. (I did a Hulu marathon of the first episodes over the weekend, and I want to thank all of the recappers for helping me skim through the episodes quickly and find the good parts.) I find it interesting to compare it with Amor Bravio--both set, or at least begun, in beautiful rancho settings.

First, I have to admit that the plot of this one is more of what I look for in a telenovela. I can't help it, I do want melodrama in my melodramas, and here we've got the elements that pull me in: the poor girl, with an unknown rich father; the ranch owner falling for her; almost everyone looking down on her, but we know she'll show them in the end. At other times of the day I may read Proust and work on my syllabi, but when I watch TNs I'm a sucker for a plot like this. And the truth is that it took me quite a while to start watching Amor Bravio, because nothing in that plot grabbed me.

Both shows have gorgeous natural settings, but the recently built rancho in CI doesn't hold a candle to the old rancho in AB. (And I'm irritated by Octavio and Maricruz's bedroom apparently not having an attached bathroom--think of how the bathroom was a crucial set in AB or even Cuando Me Enamoro.) I also am disappointed by the lighting. The outside scenes are fine, but every interior scene takes place in bright, full sit-com-style lighting, even the wedding night. I expect that in comedies like Por el Amor Manda, but not in a drama.

And then there's the good people acting stupidly, a huge contrast with AB. I'm hoping that this is only so extreme in the first few weeks because the writers couldn't come up with any other way of setting up the huge misunderstandings that will fuel the rest of the plot. (Like others, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll be seeing Octavio as well as Maricruz mature in later episodes.) On the other hand the bad guys are about as believable as in any TN, which is to say, not very much.

What I do like is the one strikingly "grey" character, Rene Strickler's Miguel. He's clearly not going to be a cardboard villain, if he's even going to be a villain at all. In this episode he even showed signs of surprising good sense. (And his incompetence in ranch management has been portrayed not too badly as a plausible character trait, rather than a pure plot device.)

gringo,

I'm surprised that you haven't commented how fantastic Maricruz looks astride a horse... especially the rag-clad barefoot version. Now that is goddess material.

Carlos

Vivi thanks for the recap.

You brought up Sortelio, which made me think of William Levy, which made me think of William Levy shirtless, which made me think that he has a new TN called La Tempestad. That made me think that he would have to be shirtless for the entire TN. They would have put it in his contract. This made me think that I have got to be a recapper on La Tempestad. Which made me wonder how I can become a recapper on that TN so that I can express my feelings about how much I like watching William Levy without his shirt on. Any ideas of how I can get on that team? Have all of the positions been filled?

Cynderella, if you give a mouse a cookie, lol. When is that one coming on?

CathyX, La Tempestad replaces AV. I don't care how bad the acting or storyline is or is not. I'm sure William will be wonderful no matter what he's doing.

I think that one is supposed to be pretty bad. I would definitely read your recaps if you do it. Seeing as you love WL so much, maybe you could do the whole week? Or will you be too busy wiping your drool?

CathyX: I heard his competition on the TN is a cutie pie too. I might do 75% physical description recaps (what weren't they wearing when they said what) and 25% storyline.

Cynderella- I think you need to express your desire to recap La Tempestad with the AV team, because more than likely they'll get first dibs at recapping that one. Then the best way to get a jump on things is to put up the synopsis, first informing Melinama. Then you'll be in like Flynn! I think Tempestad will be perfect for your sense of humor because: 1) your great love for William Levy; and 2) it's a Mejia production. Oh, what fun you'll have! :)

I would love a recap that was all descriptions of a hunk or two. Oh, and some story if it were really necessary to get a better picture of the hawtness of William Levy.

Thanks Vivi as usual most detailed and descriptive especially the town of Tamaulipas.

I also enjoyed the Shakespeare parallelism but wait, why is Hecate and her other alliance of "Macbeth" in this tragedy. Heeeheee.

Having seen him in AB I kind of think that Miguel is sort of in between good and evil, just no backbone and very besotted of his wife. Well of course he was raised to be class conscious what with his wife's brainwashing to wit.

I would think that the old lady (cook) would take pity on Maricruz and sew her some calico clothes of a sort to tide her over. Anything would look nice on her and would not look like she has the one and only dress.

I have the same feeling of loathing these evil people in this telenovela and I find myself cussing them while watching them plot evil things and my husband would always say "but why do you watch them when they cause you so much distress". What can I say, I am a novelera. Hooked forever.

Cynderella~~~You are a hoot. I am not as a big a fan of William as you are, but I loved him on Dancing with the Stars. I also got a kick out his Coke and M&Ms commercials.

Hey, can some1 please tell me the whole story of Corazon Indomable cos am in Ghana and we just started

Thanks
