Corazon Indomable #19 6-6-13 “Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend . . . Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within . . . Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes . . . They don’t tell the truth”

We have flashbacks of the three last scenes of the previous night:  Areceli and Teobaldo outside his home; Octavio, Eduardo and two flight attendants flirting in the café; Luciafer (thanks, Cathyx) tempting Maricruz on the edge of the cactus field.
Anyone hoping for a Don Alejandro scene is doomed to disappointment—he’s a no show this episode. (Remember, he does need to get some rest.) Our action is mostly centered on MariCruz and her idol, Octavio.  She’s the victim of an elaborate scheme by Luciafer to eliminate the “basura” from their lives.  Octavio is the victim of his MC memories, assuming that she is protected by his kin while he’s the only one suffering. (He couldn’t be more wrong and he deserves to suffer.)

Since some people are lukewarm (or worse) about Octavio, his scenes are all together here, so you can skip them if you like:

  • Octavio, asleep, is dreaming of MC, riding the horse as he follows her. They meet in a field and embrace, then she disappears and he wakes up, calling her name.  “MariCruz, my wild heart!”  (Viewerville reacts with mixed tears and snorts of laughter. Those with drinks in hand choose “salud!”) Why does she chase him in dreams, with her eyes, her sweet eyes, fixed in his brain?
  •  Octavio is fastening his uniform jacket and having a flashback of orchard love with MC. Why these memories? He wonders if she needs him, but he didn’t leave her unprotected. (Ha. Ha.) Why is he central to her life? (Don’t have time to discuss that here.)
  •  Octavio and Eduardo are discussing Ed’s flight assignment in an airport coffee shop.  Ed’s pleased to fly to Isla Dorada, since he enjoys casinos.  He wonders if Tav is still hung up on his savage. Tav doesn’t know why she adores him and put him on a pedestal. (Of course, that’s only the beginning of things Tav doesn’t know.  We could write a book.)
  •  An airplane moves across the sky. Octavio gazes out, thinking he needs to get a girlfriend and forget MC before his life becomes a hell.  Later, in the airport concourse, Tav stops at a gift shop window.  He muses on the pretty things there, they ones that MC should have if she were a different woman.
  •  Octavio is writing a letter to Miguel, saying he’s sending money to buy the materials for the little house for MC.

We move on to the hatred and humiliation of Lucia’s plan for the downfall of MC. Lucia learned of MC’s pregnancy, which caused gnashing of teeth per Lucia.  MC gave heed to Maria’s advice and stopped visiting the ranch, forcing Lucia to go to the hut.
Lucky Lucia, she found the sisters on the road, near a convenient cactus field.  Still faking the sweet sis-in-law character, she greets the girls with smiles and hugs, inquiring why MC hasn’t been to the ranch lately. (Skipping some details—see yesterday’s recap.)  Offering the pearl necklace of Octavio’s mother as bait, she says MC can have it.  BUT—she has to pass a test to show her Octavio luurve before keeping the necklace.
The test begins with Lucia flinging the necklace into the cactus field. MC has to find it and retrieve it.  MC protests the ill treatment of a family heirloom “That belonged to Octavio’s mother,” not realizing just how crazy Lucia really is.  Solita, looking on in concern, is beginning to catch on to that fact.  As MC slips and slides down the muddy slope, trying to avoid cactus stickers, Lucia adds Part B to the test, “With your teeth!  Do it! It’s yours if you get it with your teeth!”
MC locates the treasure, mostly submerged in a puddle.  She ponders the price of her dignity, while Lucia urges her on.  Solita shakes her head, as MC kneels by the puddle and slowly lowers her head.  When she raises her head, the necklace is dangling from her mouth and her face is smeared with mud from cheek to chin.  A smirking Lucia praises MC for her bravery, then tells her Octavio doesn’t love her, he never did, he despises her, he’s going to divorce her.  A stunned MC retorts she doesn’t believe it, he won’t do that, she has the necklace for him.  Luciafer tells her that, at best, she’s mistaken and he’s already making separation plans.  “Adios, you’ll never forget me!” is her parting shot to the two bewildered and bothered girls.
MC and Solita are on the ground by the hut. MC is holding the clean necklace and explaining that Luciafer shouldn’t have made her pick it up with her mouth.  She’s mean!  It’s a lie about the divorce, but what if it’s true? Solita offers a sisterly embrace.
Luciafer is moving to the next step in her scheme.  She scatters the contents of two jewelry boxes on her bed, calling this a “good moment.”  Her ability to manipulate people is on display as she starts the show.  She rushes down the stairs, calling for Awwfelia and startling Miguel from his chair.  She says the pearl necklace he gave her is missing, Awwfe must search everywhere for it, they’ve been robbed!  Ester strolls down the stairs so Lucia tells her what’s going on.  Miguel is sure it will turn up, since they don’t have strangers in the house.
(OT: I don’t know why Luciafer ALWAYS wears maxidresses and Ester ALWAYS wears dressy shorts and tops.  Of course, Ramiro ALWAYS wears his yellow shirt. ???)
The charade continues, as Lucia leads her two co-conspirators in a parade up the stairs and across the bridge to the bedroom.  (The hacienda architecture is very effective here, as the platform shoes clatter on the wooden stairs and the shrieking from the bridge echoes across the open space.) Awwfe’s search was to no avail, except when Lucia’s emphasis on a stranger leads the maid to suggest MC as a likely suspect.  Lucia and her sluggard spouse exchange meaningful glances.
Ester asks Luciafer if this is part of her plan to get rid of MC? Lucia agrees, but when her cousin asks where she hid the necklace, the mastermind explains it is already with the thief, MC. Ester never thought Lucia could be so cunning and Lucia explains that’s how it is when someone gets in her way.
Miguel, using his three brain cells, called a meeting of all the staff to say the necklace is still missing and it must have been one of the trusted staff.  Ewwsebio is quick to suggest MC as a suspect.  The staff looks uneasy.  Miguel then rolls to the police station to make a formal report.  The inspector wonders if another horse is gone, but Miguel describes the theft of a pearl necklace.  The law man says they’ll investigate and do what is necessary.
Team MC is having a kitchen confab.  Jose Antonio tells Maria not to worry.  Santita knows it’s a trap.  Maria thinks they’ve already made up their minds that MC is guilty and they want to hurt her.  She collapses in tears on JA’s manly chest.  Maria is running to the hut when Ewwe calls out from his leaning and drinking pose on an outbuilding.  He tells her she can’t leave and to get back to work, emphasized with a pop of the whip and an evil chuckle.
At the hut, MC is admiring the now clean necklace. The pebbles are weird, but pretty, and she’s happy to have it.  It should be kept safe, so she stows it in the box with the important papers.  She wraps the box in cloth and puts it under the bed.
Back at the hacienda, the inspector reports that all staff have been questioned and dismissed. MC Olivares is the most likely suspect.  Lucia coos in fake distress for that “poor girl” who has only been at the house a few days.  They gave her some clothes and imitation jewelry.  Luciafer doesn’t want people to think they suspect her because she is poor and helpless.
The most likely suspect and her sister are wringing out laundry at the hut when a police siren signals the approach of the long arm of the law. Miguel, the Inspector, and four troopers are there to search the hut for a missing item.  MC says there’s nothing in there that doesn’t belong to one of the family, so go ahead. Ramiro arrives as the men are tossing the contents of the hut rather roughly.  He protests, but is told not to hinder police work.
The cruel cousins, knowing the raid was going down, are celebrating the clever plot and imagining the fun.  Lucia would love to see it, but didn’t have a reason to be there.  Ester is only interested in having fun and a happy life and wonders if schemes might backfire.
MC sees her fab fashion finds treated badly and rescues them from the mess. Next in line is Ramiro’s box of papers and the concealed necklace.  The inspector asks Miguel if this is the one? He confirms that it is.  A stunned MC tells the Inspector she was given the necklace by Lucia, explains the details and begs Miguel to ask his wife.  The Inspector says she took this without permission and she’s under arrest!
Downstairs at the hacienda, the ladies of Team MC are praying for MC’s protection.  JA rushes in to say the police are down at the hut and Santita knows a trap was set for MC.
MC feels the trap closing around her.  She begs the Inspector to ask Solita!  Her sister saw everything! (True, but no use when she lacks language skills.) Ramiro begs, “Don’t take my girl!)”  The Inspector grabs MC’s arms and starts moving her from the hut to the truck.  “I’m not a thief! Where are you taking me?,” shouts MC. Solita tries to hold him back and the Inspector pushes her to the ground.  Grandpa tries to follow, but stumbles and almost falls.  The truck with its captive drives away.
Next stop is the hacienda, where there’s no sympathy for the prisoner.  Lucia confides to Ester that this is payback for how she suffered when MC was in residence at the hacienda.  MC begs Luciafer to tell the truth, how she got the necklace from the field with her teeth.  Lucia confirms the necklace held by the Inspector is her missing heirloom (crocodile tears dripping from her eyes).  Both Ester and Lucia refuse to speak and confirm any other gift items among the jewelry the Inspector is holding.  (Not sure where he got those?  From the hut?)
Lucia has dissolved into tears of fake distress, claiming MC is crazy and disturbed.  MC also breaks down in tears, begging for someone to tell the truth.  Someone does appear—Santita and Maria.  Santita gathers MC in her arms and accuses Lucia Narvaez of setting a trap for MC! The Inspector asks what is she saying? The truth! Santita claims.  The Inspector says the jewels were found in the hut, but Santita retorts that MC didn’t steal them.
Basta! Says the Inspector, which Lucia echoes. MC repeats that she didn’t steal, but Luciafer tells the Inspector not to listen to Santa, you have the evidence.  Lucia turns the tears on one more time, whimpering that she doesn’t want to press charges, but . . . The Inspector says if MC committed a crime, she’ll have to pay for it.  He tells the servants to leave, as Santa realizes those in power are in control.
In Ramiro’s hut, he calls out to his late daughter, Guadalupe.  He couldn’t stand up for MC like he wanted; he no longer has strength for anything. Solita hugs and tries to comfort him.
MC is escorted back to the truck, cuffed to a steel bar, and driven away.  Ewwe and Awwfe watch from the driveway, as Ewwe thought bubbles “Sra. Lucia is a devil, but if I want my job I have to stay on her side.” (Takes a devil to know one, as he declares firmly for Team Lucia.)
Miguel pours a drink and asks Lucia if it’s necessary to fire the kitchen staff.  As she starts to reply, Santa and Maria enter.  Exactly the ones she wanted to see and begins speaking of lack of respect on their part.  Santa says if she’s firing them, they’re already leaving that instant.  There’s a God up there, she notes, and one day Lucia will get what she deserves for persecuting MC.  She continues with her predictions for Ester, but is interrupted by Miguel.  Santita retorts that MC is not capable of robbing anyone and Maria adds that MC is a good girl and doesn’t deserve this.
Luciafer tells Miguel to pay off the two workers and let them go.  He starts to protest (he probably likes his meals well prepared and on time), but the lady of the manor insists.  Santa tells him he’d better count the money in front of his wife so she won’t say they stole some.  She takes Miguel’s hand in farewell and tells him he’ll also be punished.  Losing the kitchen staff was a sacrifice, but a worthwhile one to Lucia, who accomplished her objective.
The police pickup unloads MC at the station as she continues to protest.  The Inspector says she is very imaginative, but she’s disgracing her grandfather.  MariCruz looks out from the bars of her jail cell, then turns her back to the outside and sinks to her knees in misery.

Next Episode:  Ewwsebio commits arson on Ramiro’s hut, with the two occupants inside.

Thanks for the recap Paloma!

It looks as if it was a miserable episode.
Somehow I just knew it'll turn out like this, Lucia framing MC for stealing that particular necklace.
Poor MC, she does not deserve this treatment. Luciafer is the worst. Miguel is right behind her. At least Santa spoke up against them.

So true about Ewwsebio - Takes a devil to know one, as he declares firmly for Team Lucia.

So, Grapms and Solita will die tomorrow? Hopefully this is the final formation of the story for MC to get out of jail, find papi and swear vengeance for all the bad the Narvaos did to her and hers.

My utmost gratitude Paloma for watching this episode thru and giving us a great recap. I watched, sort of, but kept busy with other things.
Lucia was beyond disgusting, Miguel has now convinced me he must have been dropped on his head as a child, and this supposed gullibility of MC is just over the top. And don't get me started on the weird way Tav's is handling this whole situation.
I may skip tonight since I'm not feeling too warm and fuzzy on the outcome of EWWWW's torching. I'm still holding for the fast forward and it better come SOON!

Daisy

Oh no she DINT ...mc [Charlie Brown''Pigpen ????] ACTUALLY USED HER TEETH TO PICK UP THE NECKLACE . Un.be.lie.va.ble.

Lucia is a total sociopath and Miguel should be concerned about the baby.

If this story doesn't fast forward within two episodes to Maricruz' Pygmalion experience I'm outta here. I can't believe a word of what is happening. How can anyone even believe that Maricruz would steal the pearl necklace when there is no way she can even understand its value?

Thanks La Paloma. I like your format of all Octavio scenes and all MC scenes. Since they're not together, it was an easy way to condense the storylines.

Where will Santa and Maria, ha, like Christopher Columbus's ship, get a job?

So why don't the Mejias arrive to the 21st century and use cellphones and computers? Octavio is writing Miguel a letter?!? He would be sending him an email today. They seem to have large airplanes and casinos on boats.

Great recap, Paloma. You captured all the important details and managed to inject some humor as well.

Fire at the hut tonight? Now I'm sweating bullets. I prefer humor for my recapping... I've never had to deal with roasted grampas before... and it doesn't help that I've said some unkind things about the old guy.

Carlos

A BIG thank you La Paloma---Skip a scene? I would never skip a scene of this great novela. Loved your recap and read every word as I don't want to miss anything. I did manage to chuckle {even though this was a very mean and cruel episode} when you described the effective hacienda architecture with shoes clattering and shrieking
echoes.

I hope that !/2 brain cell Octavio does not end up in the arms of several different women while he is trying to forget his wild but beautiful goddess. That would bother me, so I hope that he doesn't go that route.

Did anyone notice the evil smirk of a smile on awful-felia's face as the police inspector was about to take Maricruz away. Why would Awful-felia have a dislike for MC I ask myself. Maricruz never hurt her.

CathyX---Computers, iPads and cellphones? I ask the same thing. I don't know why but in several novelas, these items seem to be missing or in very short supply.

CathyX---I have also noticed and am
besides myself to find an answer but in all of the beautiful million or multi million dollar mansions, haciendas or ranchos, I have yet to see an electric dishwasher. I have seen every other
modern apliance but washing the dishes is always done by hand. Like
the lack of computers, it just doesn't make sense to me and so I just tell myself, it's a novela.

Oh no!!! Maricruz the country goddess is now in jail. Evil Eyes
Lucifer was very happy last night.
Her plan worked, but little does she know that there is a novela anvil hovering over her head. It might be a while before it drops but when it does, all of her evil and hatred of the lower class will be no more.

The shack is burned---Can Gramps get out and what of Mari's birth certificate?

Ah la Paloma...you are a strong woman. I could. not. watch. this. But appreciate your thorough recap of the misery.

Favorite line:
(Of course that's only the beginning of things Tav doesn't know. We could write a book.)

Sounds like our galan is entranced by his wild, devoted lover, but is too half-witted to realize he is leaving her and her family to savage, vengeful dogs.

Have fun tonight Carlos. Better you than me!

Curious reaction from Ester (who is ruining a name that I like). Before the cops go there, Lucia told Ester the plan and said that she (Ester) should claim some of the jewelry as her own, and that MC stole it. Ester asked if Lucia might be going too far with this one. Shooting someone, fine. But getting the girl thrown in jail? Too much. But when the cops asked if some of the jewelry was hers and was stolen, she only hesitated a little then went all in on Lucia's plan.

Foreshadowing of future redemption for Ester, or was she just bored with the whole thing and ready to go shopping for more shorts?

Kelly

Gracias Paloma

!Dios mio! Why didn't MC pick up the muddy necklace & fling in Luciafer's face?

Cliche #27 tonight, burning down the shack.

Where are the fierce dogs, they couldn't possibly like Lucia.

Wow! I am so glad I am away and didn't see this episode, and that I will miss tonight's too. Thank you La Paloma.

If the cabin is burned with Gramps and Solita inside, could Alejandro's detective come to believe Solita was MC and tell him his daughter died?

Things are looking very dark for MC. I'm glad to read that Santa and Maria stood up for MC and spoke up, even if it did no good.

Thanks Paloma!

I'm getting tired of watching Maricruz and Solita abused.

Thanks for recap. It was hard to watch, but you made it easy to read.
I wonder, why Mari took off the wedding ring? Where she can hide it in prison? And Why???
Someone during first week said, that there is no villains in this novela. I think, only Lucia is already enough.
Alegria

The place that Eduardo said he was flying, isn't that where the casino that MC papa owns is? Could be the link to get padre e hija together.

Barbara---Sit at my table? Yes of course you can sit at the table but I must tell you that it isn't my table, it's the Corazon Indomable table and all are welcome. It's a big family style table with lots of laughter and fun---well not so much right now, but when things start to improve,
we will all have a good time for sure.

La Paloma, thanks for giving it your all. I'm so glad I can skip to next cut, >>FF, or mute my wand. Hadn't seen the first 10 min. and Ay Papi, as Paquita would say, Eduardo in a uniform is to die for, or at least to get all hot and bothered for.

Please, Uni, get this guy a galan role and you'll have the prime age group 15-77 drooling...and watching his every move. Good for rating, doncha think?

I meant mostly women, but I'm sure there are quite a few men out there who might be drooling, too.

My two cents about lack of high tech at the hacienda: we need to remember the Narvaez are what they call in Mexico "Gente bien venidos a menos." They don't have the money to pay for that kind of tech, especially when they are out in the middle of nowhere, high in the mountains of Tamaulipas. (Yes, I know they are near a highway, but that doesn't necessarily provide access to satellites or cell towers). The servants, on the other hand, are a lot cheaper than the high tech. (example - Lucia tells Miguel to pay the maids, then encourages him to give them $1,000 pesos as if he is being "generous", when that amount is not even $100 dollars. But that is actually VERY realistic - even in Mexico City it is not uncommon for servants in wealthy homes to make only $1 dollar a day, working six days a week, especially when they get room and board. That's why even people in Mexico who would be considered lower middle class in the U.S. can afford to have servants in their homes and why many people don't bother having dishwashing machines.

Paloma, you are true-blue to have provided such a thorough recap of such an awful mess. And Latina in MD I really appreciate your dose of reality on the awful wage disparities that prevail, and that make this novela more realstic than might be thought possible. I'm going I'm going to give this a couple more viewings to see if I can bear it. But the ugliness is, to me, uncommonly ugly, even for telenovela land. There was some reprieve in Santa and Maria speaking up for MC but the necklace-in-teeth scene was way over the top...way, way over. Degrading beyond humiliation. It may be that I can't tune in again regularly until MC starts at least wearing shoes (and have to say that so far, her feet look pretty terrific with nary a corn or callous to be seen for all that pounding the roads barefoot) and beyond that, is armed with some sort of skills and real support to move about less terrifyingly in the world she finds herself tied to.

Kelly, thanks for the detail you added on the Ester conversation. I don't always get everything correct and it's good when people add things.

Alegria, I thought MC was just holding the ring when she took it off. She held it up and looked at it, maybe like asking Otavio where is he when she needs him?
Lucia is certainly all the villain anyone needs. That's why I used the "Smiling Faces" song quote for the title.

Variopinta, yes, Isla Dorada is the casino Don Alejandro owns. It will be a part of MC's future one way or another, since we've already been introduced to it.

Carlos, we've seen other TNs where our heroes are threatened with burning, but I have a bad feeling about this one.

@Dona Felipa - I totally agree that the ugliness in this TN is uncommonly ugly, but it's what justifies the "vengeance" part of the story. But even for me this first part was tough. The only reason I was able to handle the "Ranch Hell" part was because I saw the first 20 episodes online over a single 3-day weekend (without commercials), not as a daily torture for 4 weeks. Plus I had a good idea of what was coming in the "vengeance" part of the TN, since I saw both previous Mexican versions. Even knowing the general plot, I am thoroughly enjoying watching this second part of the story, especially because of the performances of the two leads.
