Corazón Indomable #26, 6/17/2013: The Evolution of Maricruz; Tobi Sniffs Out the Truth

The Evolution of Woman

The Old:
Maria calls Maricruz to let her know she dropped off The Box of letters and documents, and is on her way back to the countryside. Downstairs, Doubting Tobias tells Alejandro they need to find out the secrets in The Box to find out who Maricruz really is.

The New:
Maricruz tells Maria, say it with me now… “Yo quiero morir!” Having heard this from Maricruz about 100 times before, Maria ignores her and goes right to chatting about the sweet life Maricruz is now living. MC admits that Don Ale is good peeps. Maria’s money runs out and the call ends before they finish speaking, but Maria is just pleased that she fulfilled her mission and can now be on her way, to bring delight, merriment, and hijinks elsewhere.

Tobi continues to try to convince Ale to break into The Box. After all, if the girl dies on them, and they don’t really know who she is, Ale could be held responsible. Don Ale shuts down those morbid thoughts. (Tobi is as much of a Drama Queen as MC with all this death talk.) Ale doesn’t want to betray her trust that way. When MC feels better, she can give them the details of her life. Tobi doesn’t look convinced.

Meanwhile, in a bar in the city, Octavio has decided that he’s just going to leave everything up to destiny. Serafina will inform him next time MC gets in touch. It might actually be for the best that MC has left the countryside and wants to forget him. Ed wants to know what Tav will do if MC’s reason for being in D.F. is because she wants to get back together with him. Cara de clueless de Octavio.

The next morning, Don Ale checks up on the bedridden MC, while Solita is out with Justa the maid. MC says she’ll tell him the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, right now. She admits to Don Ale that she lied about meeting her father, just to get him off her case. She's never met the guy, and has no other family. She grew up in a shack, in the mountains, in the North, near a small town (it would be helpful if she mentioned the name), with her grandfather (again, a name would be helpful), with Solita… and a monkey, near a river, through the woods, over a dell, near a cluster of orange trees, one of them 10 feet high. (OK, she didn’t go into THAT much detail, but she nearly did, and STILL didn’t say the NAME of the damn town or region she came from!)

Octavio is frustrated because MC has not yet contacted Serafina, and he has no idea what she’s doing or if she needs anything. (What was that you were just saying about leaving things up to destiny, Octavio?) Ed wonders if what he really wants is to get back in her pants together with her. Octavio doesn't want to hurt her again. He is sure she’ll never forgive him for abandoning her.

Well, Tav can add one more person to the list of people who think he’s a rat bastard. MC has apparently just told Don Ale about her whole ordeal with Octavio and the Narvaez family (without mentioning names), and Don Ale is livid. He totally gets her thirst for vengeance now. He’d like to give them what they deserve with his own hands! “The worst of it is that I’m going to have his (the rat bastard’s) baby!” Don Ale begs her not to feel resentment towards the baby. She has him to depend on now. He wants her and Solita to feel protected and cared for (amparada). “I will never abandon you… Maricruz, from the bottom of my heart, I want you to see me as a father.” A big hug and many tears on both their parts.

Does Tobi’s cold heart melt when Don Ale tells him that MC has a tragic back story? Nope. He knows that deceitful women use their tears as a weapon.  Don Ale can’t believe that Tobi hates women. Tobi claims it’s not hate—but he does know that MC wouldn’t admit it if she’s a lying liar who lies.  Well, if it’s not hate, then it’s jealousy, thinks Ale. Tobi denies this too. He’s loyal and doesn’t want Don Ale to be taken advantage of. Don Ale admits that he’s started to see MC as a daughter. “But she’s NOT your daughter, sir!” (Oh, how sweet it will be when Tobi has to eat crow about this and so many other things.) “If I found out that my daughter has suffered as MC has, I would DIE of remorse (remordimiento).” Uh oh! Doubting Tobi decides to take matters into his own hands. He’s going to get into The Box!

The education of Maricruz Olivares continues. We see her and Solita getting table etiquette lessons from Don Alejandro; Maricruz getting private tutoring from an old guy; proper drinking glasses; posture; wine pouring and tasting; etc.

Isla Dorada (scenes combined):
Tony and Carola discuss the thief, nicknamed El Zorillo (the little fox), who has suddenly popped up on Isla Dorada. Carola is sure that the cops will soon find the culprit. Tony is sure it’s someone who knows the island well, and knows that the victims (who all just won big at the casino) are carrying lots of money. He's also stolen jewelry. Teobaldo interrupts, and Carola scolds him for being overprotective of Arecely and scaring off the customers. She brings up El Zorillo and asks if he knows anything about it. Is that a guilty look, or is that just the way his scrunched up face always looks? Teo says it must be someone who needs a lot of money…someone with lots of ambition. Hmmmmm… (Well, did any of the victims say they were robbed by a guy who looks like the love child of Popeye and Quasimodo?)  Later the cops board the boat and question Teo about the thief. Caught off guard, he accidentally waters the police commander’s shoes, instead of the flowers. The police figure he must have seen something since he’s always around. Teo claims he don’t know nuttin’.  Raiza visits Carola in her office, and wants to talk about El Zorillo too. Carola is worried about how this will affect business. Even though the robberies happened on the streets, they could still scare people away from the island and the casino. They will get a bad rep, and the police might even begin to suspect them! Raiza has suspicions that the thief might be Teo. The thief obviously knows exactly what’s going on in the casino and who has won big. Carola points out that lots of people do- Raiza herself, Carola, Tony, and many others. Plus, Teo has always been honorable. Raiza’s take on human nature: “We’re all honest, until we stop being so.”

Back in D.F., Don Ale and the girls go out and Tobi takes the opportunity to snoop. He makes a beeline for The Box and finds the letters from Don Alejandro. “Maricruz is his daughter!” Cara MUY impactada de Tobias. He pulls out letter after letter, becoming more convinced. He then finds the picture of Lupita—an unsmiling/sullen version of MC—and realizes it’s the same one Don Ale has. But why is MC going by the name Maricruz Olivares, and not Maria Alejandra Mendoza-Olivares? (Dude, it’s close enough!)

Tav returns to the boarding house and asks if MC has called. He begs Serafina again to please let him know when she does. He swears he really is her husband. Serafina doesn’t doubt it, but she’s more concerned about all the pain she knows MC experienced. Tav admits that he’s the main one who caused her suffering. He’ll never be able to live down his regret. He’s sure she came to the city to forget about him and doesn't know he's there.

So were you thinking that Tobi would immediately start planning a lovely father-daughter reunion dinner? Brace yourselves. Tobi puts the letters back in The Box, and thought bubbles to himself, “Don Alejandro CANNOT find out about this blow I just discovered. I can’t tell him that MC is the daughter he has been looking for so long. I need to find the right time to tell him.” (Perhaps Tobi should have asked Moctavio for his advice? He was just hanging out in the room anyway, and I’m sure he would have had MUCH better advice than what Tobi gave himself.) Tobi puts The Box back and goes directly to Don Ale’s room to stare at Don Ale’s photo of Lupita that he has seen umpteen times before.

Don Ale and the girls return from shopping. MC was not as frugal as she was the first time, but Don Ale wanted them to buy more. They go to the living room so that they can show him what they bought. Tobi looks on the sweet scene. Is that a smile we see??!! Maybe even a moist eye? He thinks to himself, “Don Alejandro and his daughter.” Now he knows why they were so drawn to each other. It was the call/voice of the blood.

MC’s Lady Lessons continue. This time with an actual lady showing MC how to properly walk down the stairs looking like a haughty rich b*tch. More table etiquette lessons for MC and Solita, this time with Tobi as their patient tutor. Wonders of wonders, MC has conquered the silverware! Next we see her mastering walking in heels. We measure the passing of time by the height of the heel. They get less chunky, and more sexy, as MC gets increasingly confident. By the end, Maricruz 2.0 may still have the same wild hair, but her air is that of a self-assured woman of means. Bravo girl!

In their room, MC tells Solita that they need to take advantage of all they are being taught. She signs to Solita asking if she is happy. Indeed, Solita seems a lot more at ease, and happier than she has been in a long time. MC is shown studying from large math books, and reading novels and writing books reports. Tobias brings her juice while she studies. He’s all smiles and sunshine, tells her she needs to eat well for the baby, and asks her to call him Tobias, not sir. Tobi claims the reason he has taken the stick out of his butt is being so nice to her is because Don Alejandro has so much affection for her, and he’s following the Don’s lead.

MC is still amazed that he’s the same gruff guy who threw her out when she first came looking for a job. She admits she was a tiny, ity bit rude. He says it’s all water under the bridge. “Now you are someone important in this house.” They both agree that Don Ale is good peeps, and then MC gets weepy about how lucky she has been to find people like them. She remembers Luciafer making her fish that necklace out of the mud with her teeth. She tells Tobi that there are people out there with hearts like stone. She has learned so much in so little time that she feels like a different person.  A worse person, with a LOT of resentment (rencor) and hate inside of her. She wants to get revenge (venganza) on and humiliate those who humiliated and despised (despreciar) her. They have poisoned her soul.

In the bedroom, Solita plays with Moctavio/Monito and drinks her juice. Suddenly, she gets nauseous and runs to the bathroom before she upchucks on the floor. Uh oh! (Really writers?!!! #*&%! Just what the poor girl needs!)

Don Ale thanks Tobi for acting like a human with a heart with MC. “It seems you finally know who she is.” (Oh, if you only knew, Alejandro!) His next mission is to find her rat bastard of a father who abandoned her.
T: Errr…no sir. That’s not a good idea.
A: Why Tobias?
T: *Gulp*

Tobi convinces Don Alejandro that it’s better to wait until MC has her baby, and to find her rat bastard of a husband first. Ale agrees. He tells Tobi that the night MC told him her terrible story, he felt like he was with his daughter, Maria Alejandra. He couldn't sleep, had nightmares, and started having horrible heart palpitations and felt like he was having another heart attack. He doesn’t think he’s up for any strong emotions. Tobi panics. “What you need is tranquility.” Ale agrees and goes to see MC. This further convinces Tobi that he can’t put Don Ale’s life at risk by telling him MC is his daughter and provoking the Big One.

Note to Tobias: Call Don Alejandro’s cardiologist. Tell him you are about to break some major news to Don Ale. Tell him to bring all his equipment, including a defibulator, an assistant, an EMT, and an ambulance. Once they are all in place by his side, hand him The Box.

Later, Tobi tutors MC on geography. She is an excellent pupil and a fast learner. Solita, meanwhile, plays happily outside with Moctavio/Monito, who looks made for the good life as he lounges on a lawn chair. Justa brings MC juice and MC says she feels bad (apenada) about how much she is getting and how little she is contributing in the house.  Justa affirms that her job is to learn, and that’s what she’s doing.

MC comments to Justa that she feels like she was blind before, but now she can see. She can’t believe how ignorant she was. She realizes now that she was a defenseless creature. What harm did she do those people? Justa tells her that’s how life is—the big fish eat the little fish. She urges MC to eat, in order to get strong and healthy to be able to withstand (aguantar) what’s to come (giving birth). MC still doesn’t look excited by the idea of having Octavio’s baby. She never wants to see him again!

“The others harmed me because of their vanity and pride (orgullo). But he, he deceived and betrayed me! He made me his victim! He abandoned me there, trapped in a cage (juala) with wolves, knowing that they wanted to destroy me.”

MC is determined to work hard to pay back Don Ale a bit of all he’s given her. She asks after Solita and is told that she’s outside playing with the monkey. Then Justa asks a delicate question. “Is Solita still a señorita (virgin)?” MC is offended by the question. Of course she is! Well, Justa has noticed she’s been gaining weight, and she has the feeling that Solita is pregnant too. MC nearly chokes on her juice. Cara impactadisima de Maricruz!

Avances: Octavio gets desperate to find MC. MC goes out with Don Ale, looking fabulous in a fancy red dress, and Octavio spots her.

Comments:
I loved how fierce MC looked walking in those heels by the end of that sequence. Go girl!

I am mad at the writers for letting Solita get pregnant by that demon spawn. (Maybe it’s cancer? That would almost be better.) Perhaps now MC will finally figure out part of what happened to Solita, but I wish the revelation had come in another way. Arrgg! They need to get Solita into a school for the deaf.

I’m going to take my beanie off for a second to ask two logical questions. No need to try to answer them, because I don’t think there are any logical reasons for them: 1) Since Tobi and Don Ale know MC’s last name is Olivares, and she looks like Lupita, shouldn’t they at least suspect that she’s related to Lupita?; 2) Serafina told Octavio that her tenant MC is pregnant, before either of them knew his connection to her. Now that Octavio knows that his MC is that MC, shouldn’t he be asking some questions about that pregnancy?

I loved this whole episode (except the Solita pregnancy, of course), but I loved it even more after reading your take on it, Vivi. That was an AWESOME recap. So bravo to you too!!!!!

My two cents on your questions -
#1 - Maricruz never told Don Ale her last name; she just said she was "la Maricruz" when she met him; the whole picture thing is rather silly, but I blame the producer more than the writers for it; we wouldn't have this issue if Mrs. Mejia had simply spent a little extra money on a different actress to play the itty bitty part of Lupita on her deathbed, plus to take her picture, in color even!! Argh.
#2 - do we really expect 2-brain cell Octavio to remember what his landlord said about a girl he wasn't even interested in meeting? Remember he is suffering from an almost fatal case of galanitis.

Thanks Latina! I really enjoyed the episode (minus Solita's pregnancy) too.

Tobi does know that MC's last name is Olivares. Without seeing her birth certificate he asks himself why MC is just going by Olivares, instead of her full last name. That means he knows her last name. And if he knows, then surely Don Ale knows too. In any case, it doesn't make sense, so I'm going to let it go. LOL!

You're right, Vivi, it doesn't make sense. But like you, I just choose to let it go and enjoy the rollercoaster ride. I do think it's quite a ride!! Except for LQNPA, which I absolutely loved, I haven't enjoyed a novela this much in years, so I prefer to ignore the inconsistencies.

Vivi - thanks for your recap and putting it up so quickly.

Add me to the list of those who are disappointed but not surprised about the Solita plot. Is the new trend now to have a completely helpless young girl have to endure pregnancy from rape? Ya Basta!

Your logic as well as LatinaInMD about MC's last name and Oblivious's not mentioning the pregnancy are clearly those unfortunate plot gaffs the writers have made.

While I am loving MC and Solita's new life, I did expect Don Ale as an educated person to send Solita to a school for the deaf. It's so not OK that she can't communicate with anyone.

Thank you for the recap Vivi!

Here is another "beanie cap" moment. Unless, Maricruz was taught all of that Readn', Ritn', Rithmatic, poise and manners all in two weeks, shouldn't she have a little baby bump by now? At least her bra size should be changing. The maid noticed that Solita was putting on ELLBEES, right?

Why is the monkey simply hanging out in the bedroom? Is her trained to use the potty?

Cynderella

Vivi, there was plenty of fun in this episode and your replay was even more fun! Thanks for including the shoe montage, loved it.

Don Ale and MC reached a new level in their relationship, once she told him her story and he reassured her of his caring and support.

Tobias! So he snooped in the box, sniffs out THE CALL OF THE BLOOD, but can't figure out how to tell Don Ale. I like the idea of a medical team.

Loved seeing the bits and pieces of MC lady lessons. She seemed to be mocking the stair trainer a little bit. The soup and wine training must have brought back memories of the Navaraez table.

Nice to see Monito behaving himself, more or less. It's good for Solita to share in some of the lady lessons and I join those who hope she goes to a deaf school at some point. Her pregnancy will force people to discover the rape.

I like that MC is gaining some insight into herself as well as the world around her. She'll need that in the future, when she has to deal with other people.

So tomorrow, we get to see MC as a GGIEG (Gorgeous Girl in an Evening Gown).

I'm apparently not very evolved as a woman because those stilettos would kill me. Love the pics anyway! But she still can't keep her elbows off table. Even Solita has picked that up. And once they teach Solita table manners (which she's picking up quite well considering), they can get a teacher for cryin' out loud.

And on Solita, screw you writers! I couldn't comment last week but I was mad finding out she's only 15, and now this? But during all their shopping trips, has anyone taken MC to the doctor to see about this pregnancy? What if she's a false alarm and only Solita is pregnant? She's getting all gorda according to the maid, but didn't the rape happen pretty close in time to the marriage? In those avances of the red dress there is no sign of pregnancy on MC.

Kelly

Kelly- A doctor saw MC after she fell down the stairs and confirmed her pregnancy. It was unclear how much time MC and Tav were married. Might have been months, might have been weeks. But I would say they are probably just a month or less apart in their pregnancies.

Heroines in tns never start showing to the audience until they are about 6 months along. Of course, sharp eyed women like Serafina and Justa can tell right away.

In any case, tn pregnancies usually require liberal use of our beanies.

Excellent, Vivi. So crisp and cleverly done. The shoes were a stroke of genius and presented with perfection. Lots of great lines which will doubtless be quoted freely in the comments... I especially liked:

"By the end, Maricruz 2.0 may still have the same wild hair, but her air is that of a self-assured woman of means."

A wonderfully crafted sentence.

Was anyone really surprised that Solita is pregnant? Does anyone remember a TN in which a virgin was raped and did not end up pregnant?

I would estimate that 60% of rape pregnancies in TNs end up with stillbirth or miscarriage. However, I think the fact that Maricruz is also pregnant gives this pregnancy a better chance of making it to term.

The story plus the photo... could Alejandro recognize her as his daughter even if you whacked him in the face with DNA results?

I'm still remembering Tobias as the faithful butler Fidel (LldA). He has such a sweet gentle smile. I say good for him for keeping what he knows secret... that assures us of a nice long show and insures that Alejandro will be around for awhile longer.

Carlos

Well at least she saw a doctor. And Solita gets a job as the nanny aunt. Just as soon as someone gets her schooling and teaches the household sign language!

Kelly

Thanks Vivi, you did a great job.
Excellent insights on Oblivio, last episode he was finally adding up 2+2 why don't he asks the proper questions now?
Anyways I trough over logical thinking in the beginning as somebody very helpfully told me over here, it has no use at all.

Poor Solita, she doesn't even know what happening, suffered a great abuse and now this? How she's gonna react when she actually realize what's happening to her?

Loved the shoe pics you put up at the top. They now just need to find her a brush and comb..and she'll be a LADY.

However what really botherd me, and made me throw my beanie on the floor and jump on it was the tabe scene with Tobias.
It was wrong, wrong, wrong...if you teach table manners on TV at least teach them properly.

- You DO NOT pick on your trousers before you sit down, so it'll be eaiser.
- You DO NOT cut up your food with a knife and fork at the proper position and then put down the knife and change hands to grab your fork with the other hand and eat it like that.
- You DO NOT give WINE to a PREGNANT lady.

Vivi:

What a wonderful detail, superb recap! I loved your asides but especially the one about the medical team!

I too don't get why Tav is forgetting Serafina telling him about the pregnancy. I guess his two brain cells are not firing. He'll get with it eventually, hopefully, one can hope, si?

I too can't figure out why Don Ale and Tobias, both, couldn't figure out who MC was as soon as she darkened their doorway. She is the spitting image of that picture! You'd think they'd notice? Nah, not so much. But at least Tobias now knows, and hopefully he will be telling Don Ale at some point. Don Ale is so full of joy now, I think if he were to find out slowly, I know how do you do that? He'd be ok.

I too am mad about Solita, did they really have to do that to her????? Maybe she will have a miscarriage or an accident where she loses the bebe. I can't see the poor girl, carrying that bebe to term! The writers shouldn't have gone this route. I too hope she gets a teacher, to at least learn sign language so she can tell them what happened. I can't wait for the day Ewwww-sebio pays for that crime!

I also can't wait for the day that Tav confronts Luciafer about why she lied to him about MC still being there and asks Miguel exactly what he did with that money he sent for MC's house! I want to see what lie they come up with.

I too loved the shoe pics you put up. That was perfect. It's true they haven't said how much time has gone by, either. I can't wait to see what happens tonight when Tav talks to MC 2.0!

Great recap, Vivi, I am finally looking forward to writing mine today.

This was a great episode, I'm so happy we're off the ranch. And we didn't get to see Lucifera today, so that is also a plus.
I loved the montage of MC's learnnig stuff, I especially enjoyed her while she was mocking her teacher on the stairs: she had the exact same look Lucifera has while strolling around her house.

I guess expecting for Oblivio to keep his smarts for 2 episodes would have been way to much, he suffers from a very serious case of the galinitis (thanks, Latina!), added to the fact that the tn is only on its 26th episode. He might need some 100+ shows to learn how to use his brain on a regular basis.

I am so sorry about Solita, but I was not surprised...

I've missed some of the episodes, so I'm not sure, but do we know who the thief on the isle is?

Love it Love it Vivi! Your great recap, and added questions were spot on.

Enjoyed the "evolution" scenes last night. The shoes...well, it always cracks me up that these poor woman in these shoes have to endure the 4 inch heels just to show they are refined and sexy. At least Ana can actually walk in those things, some actresses crack me up on how poorly they navigate the heights.

I was tempted to have to adjust my beanie on Tobias' reasoning, but this IS a TN and it would have been just too common sense to do exactly what you recommended and tell the poor man, who has been searching FOREVER, that he finally found his daughter. And using a picture of Ana for the mother--c'mon. If that couldn't jog an investigation by Ale...ok. parking it.

On the other hand...shame shame shame on the writers for the Solita story line. They needed to be taken to the wood shed for the initial rape scene, but now they should be given their severance in bananas and shown the door.

And with that...I get that Solita gets to sit in on MC's etiguette lessons, but why aren't they giving that poor girl some educational lessons too? Sign language expert maybe? OK...parking it again.

So TaV-Ass gets a gander of his lady ( and she looks like she is showing in her pregnancy?) A say a couple swats with the cane by Ale should be in order.

Daisy

Thanks everyone. Glad you liked the shoe montage pic.

Adriana- We don't know who the thief is yet. They seem to want us to think it's Teo, because of the guilty looks, Raiza's accusation, and his previously stated desire to get enough money to leave the island with Arecely. But I'm not sure it's him. The also had a scene when Tony mentions how late he sleeps. Why does he need so much sleep? Perhaps because he's out late robbing people? And Raiza was awfully quick to blame Teo. Maybe she's the thief. The thief is also stealing jewelry. We know Raiza likes money and the good life.

Vivi, arianced wasThanks for the quick and funny recap complete with shoes and questions for further pondering!

This episode was quite enjoyable. My favorite part was Tobias going through MC's papers with the monkey roaming around in the background. In the real world I would not want to imagine how that room would smell. But with the requisite beanie wear, it is all A-okay!

Jarifa

great recap as usual vivi & loved 'the evolution of woman'!

Agree with all of ya'll about solita. It just seems too cruel after all she's been through and she's sooo young & uninformed about so many things.

Of course Tobias wasn't going to tell don Ale, *sigh*, that would of been too easy. But at least someone who doesn't seem to have any ill will towards them knows.

One thing I wonder about is the history between Carola & Teo. It's not like she treat him like her best buddy, but she seems to usually side with him despite raiza's contempt for him....

Can't wait for tonight's episode!

jlk

Great job as usual Vivi. I wish I had time to watch, but stoopid work gets in the way. At least I have the recaps to enjoy. I can read them much quicker than watching.

Irisz79, table manners differ in different countries. In the US and apparently Mexico, it's good manners to cut meat, then put the knife down before eating with your fork. I learned that not everyone eats that way when I was in Germany and they never put their knives down when eating with their forks. Just different customs.

Really good Vivi, tks

Loved the evolution, you can reverse it as you age.

!Dios mio!, pobre Solita, she didn't use that well known shut down mechanism when she was raped. Three women pregnant, somehow that is going to mean something, !ay caramba, the famous baby swap!!!!!

Didn't we have a box in FELS?

answers
#1 this is a Mrs. Mejia novela after all, I would not expect more or would that be less?
#2 OBLIVIO, need I say more?

During WWII Americans were caught by Nazi's by the way the silverware was handled. We cut the meat, put down the knife, switch the fork to the other hand. The Germans, cut the meat & just take a bite.
It would be interesting to know the different cultures. In some of the Arab countries they eat with their hands, a la Maricruz antes. Always with the right hand.

What an interesting bit of info Cathyx, naturally I know that the customs and habits are different, like setting the table etc, but the way of eating with the knife and fork? You surprised me. One always get to know something new.
Over here what she did definetly considered rude and unacceptable. The only acceptable situation for this when they do it for small children who not yet learned the proper way of eating with utensils.

@Variopinta - "Loved the evolution, you can reverse it as you age."
LOL :D

Great work, Vivi.

I hate the so-called American way of switching the fork to the right hand. It's awkward and looks childish to me. My mother was from Germany where that isn't done, so I always use the fork left-handed when there is a knife.

It is so obvious that Maricruz is Alejandro's daughter I wonder when he last saw an eye doctor.

Here is what I found on the knife and fork subject in an article:
“There are two basic methods for eating with a knife and fork. The "American" involves having your fork in your left and your knife in your right when cutting your food, then putting the knife down and switching your fork to your right hand to eat, tines facing upwards. (If you're right-handed, that is.) With the "European" method, the fork remains in the left hand and the knife helps coax your food onto your fork. The tines remain facing downwards.
According to some etiquette books, the American style came to the States with the British colonists and took hold here, while the European method is a somewhat more recent change.
The European style is also referred to as "hidden handle" because the knife and fork are held in such a way that the handles are tucked into the palm and held by the thumb and forefinger.
The American style is also referred to as the "zig-zag method" where the fork is held like a spoon and indeed sometimes used like a spoon to scoop rather than spear food.
According to Wikipedia, American spies were exposed in at least two American films by using the wrong fork technique: O.S.S. (1946) and The Big Red One (1980).”

Good site about the subject of utensils. Click on forms of utensils,
forks used to have 2 tines, not very helpful.

The answer to eating

It seems Canada & maybe Australia
eat the zig zag method & as we've seen
Mexico.

Ah Vivi..loved the pictures, although the new blogger photo process seems to leave the pics very dark. At least on my computer. But since I absolutely ruined my feet trotting in high heels around Europe while working or going to school (and then later back here as a reporter) I wince at seeing those healthy girls squeeze their nice bare feet into those torture chambers. But the heels are beautiful...especially those super high beige ones.

You are wicked!

"love child of Popeye and Quasimodo"!!!!!

Oh my. Apt description of Teobaldo. But wicked, m'dear.

Also enjoyed all your Cara-Jardinerisms...especially "Cara de clueless de Octavio".

And finally, thanks for including a discussion of "amparada". I adore that word in Spanish. It sounds like what it means, gently flowing off the tongue. Beautiful word. And beautiful concept.

I was about to jump in on the table manners discussion as I was SHOCKED the first time I witnessed the European manner of eating. To me, it seemed crude and wrong. And to those brought up that way, OUR way of eating seems gauche and rude. A clue as to how upbringing influences our perceptions. But of course I quickly found that the European way of eating was much more efficient and was delighted to use utensils that way while I was there.

Different strokes as they say.

I love that the mix of people on this blog from different regions of the U.S. and different countries spark these discussions. I actually use both fork-knife methods, depending on my mood, and I have no idea why I do both. They both have their benefits, but I can see why one method would look crude and strange to someone who exclusively uses one.

The European method looks crude because it looks like the person is always tensed up, clutching on to both of their utensils in each hand through the whole meal and spearing everything, vs. the American (and Mexican apparently) method of cutting one dainty bite and then letting the left hand rest gently in the lap, and spooning food onto the fork instead of spearing. And the American method just seems inefficient with all that hand crossing back and forth and trying to spoon things onto a fork rather than spearing, and makes the person look like they aren't skilled enough to bring food to their mouths with their left hands. Whatever works best for the diner, I say!

I've never been to Europe. If anyone would like to make a donation towards my trip, please email me. After reading the discussion, here is my take on it. It is my theory that the only reason, a person would want to continually hold their knife while eating, would be to continually warn others..."if you reach in my plate...I will stab you". North Americans are more generous, laid back and sharing people.

It was just a joke....relax!

What I love about Caray! Recap of an episode leads to a cool discussion on the etiquette of eating. Honestly never had heard the terms of American and European used before in how to address the knife/fork holding. Being both my parents were raised by parents who had come over from Europe, keeping the fork in the left and down was just always the mannerly way to eat in our house. when in college, a professor who caught me at a dinner eating the that way leaned over and said "Ah, you eat like the aristocrats, not like the common man". ( Hey, history major--professors talk that way). Did a bit of a double-take on that one.

LOL Cyn!

Thanks Vivi for your great recap. While many didn't like part one, I loved this one from the very first few minutes, I think that it's going to be an all-time favorite. The weekends are a long wait for Monday's episode to start up again.
Tuesday's are always fun to get back in the Caray swing of things.

Loved your line---it was the call/voice of the blood.
Also---showing how to properly walk
down the stairs looking like a haughty rich b*tch. So funny.

Another great one for me was---By the end, Marycruz 2.0 may still have the same wild hair, but her air is that of a self-assured woman
of means. Brovo girl.

Just about everyone is liking Mari
2.0---I like Mari 2.0 as well but from a man's view, there was just something about the wild country Mari 1.0 that was very appealing. Mari country girl wild heart, YES!!
Well, Marycruz can go both ways--1.0 or 2.0 Either way, she's a winner.

Cathyx/Variopinta---Great information. I didn't know that people in different countries use silverware differently, or in a different manner.

Gringo- I liked MC 1.0 too. I just don't like the things that were done to her. And of course, I think everybody, whether a country/rural dweller, or a city dweller, should be educated and have opportunities. MC 1.0 was sorely lacking in that. But no matter how much she gets "polished", I think she will remain the same free spirit at heart.

LOL Cyn, If you ever wander around in Hungary you're welcome to my place for a coffe and talk, but I'll only give you a spoon just in case..

Back to unknown habits and customes, I had an embarassing but in retrospect funny story in England.
We wandered around at nightime finally ending up in a pub and I went to get some drinks at the bar.
The place was quite noisy so when my friend told me how many beers we need (2) and I didn't understand properly, I raised my fands and held up my index and middle finger other fingers in a loose fist short of when you show the victory sign just my palm side faced me. I saw nothing wrong with it, it means two.
The english in the group and over the bar looked funny, some of them disapprovingly and later I was told that sign in England means what I would have shown with holding my fingers like this-> ..I.
That was a really unpleasant situation, you can imagine.

Irisz- LOL! Yes. That one is a tricky one. Some poor innocent person like yourself may just be trying to indicating the number 2, or making a (backwards) peace sign, and end up flipping people off instead while in England. It's like walking into L.A. gang territory and accidentally flashing gang signs when you’re just trying to get directions out of the place. :)

Cynderella always keeps me laughing

WOW! This food eating ediquite. I didn't know that there were two different ways to handle a knife and fork. I as an American, cut the meat with a knife and then lay the knife down and switsh the fork to my right hand and eat with the tines faceing upward. I didn't know that there was any other way.
The European method does look crude
and unsophisticated to me but I guess that it is just the way you
are brought up. I do cut more than one piece of meat at a time though
as laying the knife down and switching the fork to my right hand each time is a lot of trouble.

Can't wait for Mari to meet Oblivio
tonight.

One last thing---Everyone wants Solita to be schooled in sign language, I do too but that would also require those around her to learn how to interpet the sign language. Is Don Ale and Tobis up to that?
the gringo

Gringo- The folks around her would also need to start to learn basic sign language. But if Solita is going to school, she can express herself with her teachers and her fellow students. Just think how marvelous that will be for her for the first time in her life! Then she can teach Mari, Don Ale, and the house staff basic signs for things.

Solita can also be taught to write by someone qualified to teach a deaf person written language (learning it is different when you can't hear the sounds). She could carry a notepad around and write notes to the folks in the house who don't know sign language.

Ok, peeps, European opinion here :)

I never switch hands while eating, as in cut the meat, put the knife down, take the fork with the other hand...it just seems so much trouble, really.
I remember I did try to learn to use cutlery like this when I was a teenager, I'd bought a etiquette book (American wrote), but after a few attempts to eat the American way I just had to give up, because every time I put the knife down I kept watching to see if I left a stain on the table cloth.
The way Europeans eat seems so much easier for me; and we don't keep the fork and the knife just dangling over the plate all the time, sometimes (when we get tired, I guess), we just place our lower arms (bellow the elbows, I mean) against the table's edge. Or we just let them both down (what I do is place them against the plate, again because I don't want to leave stains, but this might not be the proper way to do this)>I have no idea if this is a faux pas in America, but it feels perfectly natural to me.

I was born in Mexico and raised in the U.S., but for some reason I have ALWAYS eaten the European way. It's just so much easier, though I see no problem with doing it the American/Mexican way if that pleases the person doing it. What I don't like is being openly criticized for eating the European way, since I don't criticize anyone for using the American/Mexican way.

It's never occurred to me to notice how other folks use their knives and forks. Here in Texas, I'm just happy as can be when cell phones are put away and men take their hats off when they sit down at the table.

I'm sure once they get Solita learn the sign language all ppl around her will gladly learn it as well jut to be able to communicate.
MC already using some sort of crude sign language sometimes perhaps invented by themselves throught the years to get basic information to each other.

Also, nowadays, in our modern world full of technical possibilities we have so many doodads in our hand. I met a person who was seriously handicapted and unable to speak and he had a tablet like device on which if you pointed to a picture or wrote something down the device read it up on a mechanical sound but it was understandable.
Also I have an acquaintance who had laryngeal surgery due to cancer years ago and lost the ability to speak and has a hole ( r something like that) on his neck it has a device built in it and he holds a small microphone to it when he tries to speak and the machine somehow translates and makes out the words.
A rich person like papi Ale have so many possibilities to help Solita just get to it already!

Unfortunately, all the emphasis and attention has been directed toward Maricruz. Solita is being treated as an intelligent pet much like the monkey. As much as I despise Eusebio, he did view her as human prey.

We need Schoolmarm to join this discussion. She's the expert on education of the hearing impaired. But haven't heard from her in quite some time.

Schoolmarm...are you out there?

We know that Solita screamed when MC was about to jump in the river. So possibly some Mejia miracle will happen.

Adriana Noel, we don't lay the knife on the table, it's placed on the side of the plate. I say whatever it takes to get food from plate to mouth anyway you can.

I have been trying not to watch CI, but there is certainly something enticing me in more and more. I hereby add my kudos to Vivi's recap. Now I really want to watch religiously.

Can't add much to the wonderful discussion EXCEPT--my own Knife & Fork manner. I learned to eat "Old European Style" growing up in Uruguay from the Uruguayan (from Spain originally) family that took care of me from time to time. The fork never left your left hand when cutting meat or anything else that needed cutting.

My parents continued to eat "American Style." It didn't take long, though, to realize how much more efficient the European way was. After coming back to the States, I never adopted the American way--except in the most formal of occasions. Occasionally I would get questions from friends, but mostly it was just accepted as one of Anita's quirks.

Maybe that was MC's lesson, how to eat at a formal dinner when the prime minister or president was in attendance.

Variopinta said--"Loved the evolution, you can reverse it as you age." Oh, how comfortably true. I'm in the huarache stage, but looking forward to my barefoot stage.

I know this is stupid, but is a TN, so why bother?

Don Alejandro, despite MC being EXACTLY like her mother like two water drops, HAS NOT RECOGNIZED??

When Tobías saw the picture didn't recognized MC but he had another picture like this one. That picture is DA's, so, seeing a woman that is the live picture of her loved wife, didn't make him suspect ANYTHING??

...people are stupid (and love means nothing)

Have we already commented on how Maricruz's dresses are evolving as well? First she somehow manages to find a red dress that perfectly replicates the white dresses she wore for the first twenty episodes, from the length of the skirt to the open sleeves to the barely hanging-on buttons on the chest.

Then she turns up in a dress in a sophisticated deep teal, but it still has the same cut (except for sleeves and buttons) and the same length.

Next she's finally wearing a print dress, with a different kind of cut (no longer an empire waist) and nicely cut out shoulders. Then another deep teal or blue, again with a more sophisticated cut.

And then she briefly reverts back to white cotton, but at least the cut is different and much more mature, and then she appears in a beigey crepe dress with a very sophisticated look.

But in the very next scene she appears inexplicably to be wearing a tablecloth with orange sleeves, so I don't know how to interpret that.

And I'm still enjoying every second CE is on the screen. As always, when I become enchanted by a particular actor I look for their past work on YouTube, but I find myself disappointed, at least in terms of physical appearance. Maturity sits well on him, as does a touch of grey and facial hair (and the longer hair in back).

I guess I am in the flip flop stage.

@UtahDesert - I've been waiting for someone to bring up that last scene with the "tablecloth with orange sleeves". I didn't want to be the first to bring it up. That was clearly an editing error. That scene should have appeared right after the scene where the girls return with the Voice from their shopping trip. Notice how Solita is sitting on the bed with all the shopping bags still there.

@UtahDesert - you can also tell that scene is out of sequence because when Maricruz speaks she still sounds too much like an uneducated country girl and still has the sing-songy accent.

Anybody having Jose Antonio withdrawals like me? He really needs to get that gardening position at the mansion as someone mentioned earlier this week. I'm kind of a sucker for good-guy ranchhands. :)

Es la voz de la sangre! I am SO glad Tobias stopped being so scary. I do not want another villain! I really enjoyed the explanation Maricruz gave about changing for the worse, and how the Narvaez poisoned her soul. Seeing her mourn for her lost innocence was very touching. OMG, Solita is preggers!
