Weekend Discussion: The Televisa Remake Game; Classic Movies, Second Edition

We had a good time with this before, so here we go again playing Televisa casting director to remake our favorite classic movies!  The rules:
  • Pick a classic movie, any genre.  Title translation optional.
  • Give your dream cast for the Televisa Remake you would produce.  Actors currently under contract to Telemundo are also invited to the casting call.  Although most or all character names would be changed into Spanish ones, use the original character names for clarity.
  • Make note of any minor changes to setting, character relationships, etc.
  • Comment on any previously posted project.

  • New projects should occur at least every third post, but more frequently is good, too!

Considering today's weather and its effect on me (sluggish with brain working at half-speed) and Televisa's track record of doing remakes of remakes, my first entry in this discussion is the a truly great film noir remake (or reboot) – Body Heat:

Ned Racine............     Sergio Sendel
Maddy Walker........    Silvia Navarro
Peter Lowenstein.......  Jorge Salinas
Oscar Grace.............   Ricardo Vera
Edmund Walker.........  Marcelo Buquet
Stella.........................   Laura Carmine
Miles Harden.............  Alejandro Camacho
Mary Ann Simpson..... Altair Jarabo
Roz Kraft................     Eugenia Cauduro
Heather Kraft..........     Karyme Hernández
Teddy Lewis...........     Alex Sirvent

Have fun, everyone!  Just a reminder of our past projects so we don't repeat ourselves:

The Ten Commandments
Dangerous Liasons
Casablanca
The Wizard of Oz
The Godfather
Gone With the Wind
Rosemary's Baby
Chinatown

If anyone else is willing to revisit TV shows at a later date, please say so during the discussion!

Urban, I've only seen Rulli in Amores. He plays such a goodie two shoes, that I can't see him as Lastat. Does he play a good bad guy?

Cynderella

Ernesto Alonso adapted several books as telenovelas back in the 60's and 70's. Some were even from the English speaking world:

The Portrait of Dorian Gray
Wuthering Heights (he made two versions of this one, one in 1964 that was very successful and another one in 1979 that didn't get as much rating)
Little Women

He also made a telenovela version of Beauty and the Beast and who knows how that version went because it's from 1979 so it doesn't have the influence of the Disney movie that has pretty much influenced every version I've seen afterwards.

He also made Marianela from the book by Benito Pérez Galdos and recreated the historic romance of Maximiliano amd Carlota and the life of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz among his old historic dramas that I didn't get to see.

Televisa must have access to all those old scripts still but I think they don't have the money to produce them anymore :( .

Jarocha

I'd love to see those. Where is that classic novela network someone was supposed to launch?

Whom would you cast in a new version of Wuthering Heights?

I posted this once, but there was no activity that weekend. In view of Por Ella Soy Eva I thought this would work:

Some Like it Hot

Joe/Josephine.............. Jaime Camil
Jerry/Daphne.............. Fabian Robles
Sugar Kane................. Angelique Boyer
Sweet Sue................... Daniela Castro
Max Bienstock........... Richard Kleinbaum
Spats Columbo............ César Evora
Det. Mulligan.............. Ricardo Vera
Sid Polyakov............... Hector Suarez Gomiz
Osgood Fielding......... Pepe Olivares
Spats' Henchmen........ Sergio Acosta, Salvador Pineda, Sergio Reynoso
Other Mob Bosses...... Jesus Ochoa, Otto Sirgo, Sergio Sendel
Nelly........................... Paty Navidad
Delores....................... Niurka Marcos
Other Band Members.. Ingrid Martz, Manuela Imaz, Livia Brito, Ana Brenda Contreras
Toothpick Charlie...... Pablo Valentin
Horny Bellhop.......... Mario Iván Martínez

Cynderella, Sebastian Rulli is an excellent actor and he can go to a character's dark side. I've seen him jealous and brooding more than once.

When Jorge Salinas became deathly ill during the production of LQNPA he was briefly considered as a replacement. While I have no doubt he could have done that character well, Jorge would have been impossible to follow.

UA - This is fun. Thanks for the op to assemble my dream cast.

The Magnificent Seven (1960 western)

Chris Adams........ Sergio Sendel

Vin Tanner......... Eduardo Yanez

Bernardo O’Reilly... Sergio Goyri

Lee................ David Zepeda

Britt........... Sebastian Rulli

Chico..........Jencarlos Canela

Harry Luck......... Gabriel Soto

The original had only Chico having a romance, but I'd put a few more -adding Adela Noriega, Silvia Navarro, and Kate del Castillo to the cast.

Cynderella:

Somewhere In Time is one of my favorite romantic movies : )

Urban:

About the TV shows, that would be a great idea!

I lurk around here all the time but this idea was so good it drew me to my keyboard.
I suggest Gaslight (1944) one of my favorite movies
Paula ..... Camila Sodi (was in inocente de ti a few years back ) or possibly Kika Edgar - they are the only ones I can think of who can convey her vulnerability and helpless confusion

Gregory Anton ..... Marcelo Cordoba - handsome and charming but maybe just a little subtle menace

Brian Cameron .......Jencarlos Canela

Miss Thwaites ... Leticia Perdigon - I know she's a little young but I think she could perfectly capture Miss Thwaites mix of kindness and morbid curiosity

Nancy the provocative maid ........ Angelique Boyer - I had a really hard time figuring who could do this since she is my favorite character in the movie, so insolent and suggestive

What do you guys think ?

We've got some very good imaginations here! Keep it coming, folks.

Since next week is a holiday weekend there will be no posted weekend discussion. We'll do TV shows the weekend after.

Madelaine, I love Somewhere in time. I really didn't care which women played Elise. It was all about how Christopher Reeve stared at her and pined for her. I couldn't decide on which of the three men would do it the best. They are all great at making you wish me wish I was the woman on the screen. I "believe them" when their character is in love. Does that make sense?

Cynderella

Cynderella:

It makes perfect sense : ) I too get drawn in by the character and the actor. Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve were fantastic in that movie. So believable. You are right about the pining. Sigh! I think the actors you picked are spot on : )

Sneaky, Marcelo Cordoba would be perfect for Gregory Anton.

Jarifa

UA, what another wonderful topic! Unfortunately, I am still so new to the novelas that I don't know all of the actors.

So, I would like to throw out a couple of faves and ask for suggestions.

"Lolita"- I very briefly caught a glimpse of the Angelique Boyer person. Honestly, she didn't interest me too much as I caught her on Abismo de Pasion. That show didn't keep my interest, but what do you think of her in Lolita? Who would you pick for the Humbert Humbert character?

Also...who are your picks for a remake of "Cape Fear"? The original 1962 film had some heavy hitters in Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. The remake in 1991 starred Robert DeNiro and Nick Nolte.

I'd love to hear everyone's suggestions. I can then go look up the actors you mention.

Earlier, I looked up Diego Olivera. OH MY GOSH!!! I thought I wanted to take Jorge Salinas home, but I think I've just changed my mind. Olivera is one handsome guy!

Fatima

I saw the neat topic and I couldn't resist coming out of lurkdom to share my own idea.

I love Hitchcock movies and I think several of them could be adapted as televonelas, albeit suspensful ones. One that I think would work is a version of "Shadow of a Doubt"(1943) with Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten. I'll take any suggestions for the casting but for some of the main characters I have in mind:

Charlotte "Charlie" Newton (Teresa Wright's character)..........Florencia de Saracho
Charlie Oakley (Jospeh Cotten's character)..........Marcelo Cordoba
Emma Newton (Charlotte's Mother)..........Ana Bertha Espin
Detective Jack Graham..........Ricardo Franco

It's late and I'm stumped on the others but I think these actors would be perfect for those roles. Obviously the characters, especially the minor ones, would need some fleshing out and the budding romance between Charlotte and Detective Graham would have to be given equal weight and importance to the suspense story with Uncle Charlie. The setting could easily be shifted from Santa Rosa, California to a (fictional) Santa Rosa in Mexico. It could've even still be set in the 40s, making it a sort of historical telenovela, too (I've seen plenty historical telenovalas set in the 19th century but none in the 40s).
