PEAM, Tuesday 7/16/13 (#92): I Was Told There Would Be Pancakes.

In the avances for tonight's show, I saw Yuri stab some pancakes with a fork. I was very worried about those pancakes. I thought about them all day long. But tonight, I saw no pancakes. I watched twice.

But we don't talk about food here as if that's the only thing on our minds. We're trying to prove that we're different; we're not like those other people who show up for a recap with a bunch of flowers or a bottle of wine but in the back of their minds are just thinking "chilaquiles... mole poblano... pozole..." like cavemen. Or animals. We want to distinguish ourselves as the sort of people who are above such things. Or at least the sort of people who can temporarily pretend to be above such things.

As for sex...

Wait, what? Did you think there was going to be sex tonight? I'm sending you to the back of the line just for mentioning it. I am so disappointed. I thought you were different. Now I realize you're just like all the others. Just for that, there will be no nookie until tomorrow night at the earliest. And it won't be with ME!

Maricela is weepy over her father's declining health. Pánfilo muses sadly, "This is what it took to get her to say 'I love you.'"

Alma still blames herself for the death of her autistic brother. Her father wanted him to be hidden away, but Alma wanted him to get out and see some of the world. And that's why he died. Chucho tries to convince her that it wasn't her fault. She was just a young girl trying to do a good thing for her brother.

Alma gets wound up again thinking about her father who doesn't care about anyone or anything. Chucho says that an angel like her can't possibly feel resentment. In time she'll be able to forgive her father. (If he doesn't croak first!) "You don't know how much I love you," she says, hugging Chucho.

Fernando comes home to his lonely, empty apartment and thinks how Rogue has done lots for him, but never loved him. Then he thinks about the mysterious Natasha, who also withholds affection from him, but he doesn't see a pattern. Instead, he looks forward to tomorrow, when he thinks he's going to have coffee with her.

Chucho comes into Alma's room, expecting to talk some more - but she's already asleep. Yes! He has worn her out with his passive hotness.

Morning already. Is this the same dress she was wearing before? They talk mushy on the beach, but do not say anything new.

Back in Monterrey, Elias promises to send someone an electronic payment for something he's looked at. (A house? A boat? A killer robot?) At breakfast, Valentina and Eli discuss Chucho's whereabouts and his mission to be with Alma even though she married the "bad man."

The bad man is calling Vero right now. She is sleeping late again to conserve her strength for a long day of crazy bitchitude, but she's not too tired to hear from Rogue, who is eating a wholesome and nutritiously balanced breakfast. He tells her that Chucho and Alma are together in Cancún.

Alma has changed her clothes. It's time for exercise! Alas, Chucho has no other clothes, because he didn't have time to pack a suitcase, so she has to take him to the store for some running togs. (We don't get to see the shopping trip.) They jog in slow-motion on the beach like a Baywatch episode. They race along the shore and frolic in the surf. This all looks like future flashback material.

Eli takes Valentina to school. Eli catches a glimpse of Dr. Loca, who is thought-bubbling that soon she and little Ximena will be together forever. Eli chases her, but she gets away. (Last time they talked, she said "please help me," which I took to mean that she wanted help. If I were him, I would have taken her to a clinic or at least called someone and made an appointment for her. I think I would. Or maybe I would be afraid to get hit by a flying chair. It's hard to say.)

I see no reason why Vero and Rogue couldn't have finished their conversation on the phone, but she races to Rogue's house for our viewing enjoyment instead. He brings her up to date on all the latest betrayals - that is, his affair with Alma's best friend. She wants to hear all about it. He wants to hear all about her and Eli.

Now Chucho and Alma are wearing a third pair of outfits and having breakfast. She marvels at how strange it feels to be taking a real day off from work.

Patycake, the former would-be evil genius, calls Alma, who rejects the call. Paty congratulates herself on losing the one honest thing in her life - her best friend. Chucho tries to get Alma to see things from Paty's point of view, but that doesn't work. She wants to talk about the office.

Eli signs some documents and is handed a set of keys.

Pánfilo gets an eye exam, which confirms his diabetic retinopathy, which could lead to diabetic macular edema (DME) and blindness. Chatita exhibits worse than usual memory trouble, but lucky for her the eye doctor doesn't dabble in neurology. Pánfilo insists that he's fine, and is impatient to go back to work. (Just think of all the mischief he could get into if he can't see what he's doing. Valuable contracts and half-eaten donuts could be thrown away by mistake.) The doctor says there's a laser treatment to seal off the clotting blood vessels and delay the onset of DME; but if Pánfilo doesn't take good care of himself, the problem will come back. Chatita begs him to be more careful.

At the office, Fernando is almost in a good mood. Not too good to be rude to Xochi, but better than usual. Xochi notices and comments. He insults her and demands coffee. He doesn't get why she's snickering at him.

Susana is on the phone with Alma, who has called to check in. Su and Xochi gossip happily.

Chucho and Alma frolic on a wooded path. (We are getting an eyeful of this Playa del Carmen place, and they are talking it up like crazy, too.) They share more lovey-dovey talk, the sort of stuff that lovers say shortly before the anvil squashes them. They jump into the cenote, aka limpid pool, fully clothed. There is some hugging, some neck-nuzzling, and at one point she partially bares ONE of his shoulders. Giggity!

Then, in a FOURTH set of outfits, they have elevenses on a little boat type thing and kiss and talk more mush. Alma mentally plays back a very long flashback reel and wonders aloud if they deserve to be so happy. She's afraid they might regret this later. (Regret what? Too many changes of clothing? Too nice a midmorning snack?) She asks about his family, and he says his parents were nice. (Big surprise!) When he was at college, his mother suddenly took sick and died. Then his father died of sadness.

Vero and Rogue are still outside, but breakfast has been cleared away and there's booze on the table. (Vero is drinking water.) Rogue is hoping Chucho drowns at sea. He blames Chucho for splitting up his marriage as well as Vero's. Vero isn't especially upset about that. She says that Eli is "boring," which is interesting because Chucho is quite mild-mannered himself most of the time except for when he's trying to keep from wringing her neck.

Rogue tries to get Vero to go to Cancún to bust up the happy couple, but she doesn't want to go there and watch their happiness; and while Vero babbles bitterly about their happiness, Rogue tries to gouge his eye out with some ice-tongs. No luck.

This dubious bonding session is cut short by the arrival of Cantú, who slobbers a kiss on her hand, which she rubs off with sanitizer. Cantú has some good news for Rogelio which he can't tell him right now. Vero takes the hint (I didn't know that was possible) and excuses herself, first planting a very friendly kiss on Rogue's cheek. (Sansón conveys his disregards.)

Cantú's good news: Yuri can get out on bail with a plea deal, but Rogue will have to pay the bail in exchange for Yuri's silence. ("Woof," says Sansón thoughtfully.) Rogue is annoyed at first, but then realizes that Yuri is still hopping mad at Chucho... so this could still work out in Rogue's favor. Yuri will turn Chucho into picadillo. (Is that like piccalilli relish?)

Chucho gets Alma to take the helm of the boat, symbolically taking control of her life.

Miffed by Fernando's continuing rejection, Jessica turns to Xochi for advice. Yes, Xochi.

Susana is still mumbling indignantly about Sebastard's "muertos de hambre" comments when Pánfilo asks if he can help her with anything. She says thanks, but nothing can be done. Pánfilo says she can count on him if she needs him.

Paty comes to the office, where she is welcomed like smallpox. Mari and Susana pretend not to know where Alma and Chucho are. Fernando says they're in the Riviera Maya but Alma probably doesn't want to see her. At any rate, Fernando says, Paty is now free to pursue Rogelio. (The secretarias hiss.) Paty says she's more concerned with Alma's forgiveness. They all scoff, and Fernando wants to know where (more nasty nicknames) Xochi is with his coffee.

Xochi thinks it's pretty funny that Fernando is so smitten with this Natasha (Jessi calls her "Garnacha"), but doesn't have much advice to offer. Jessi tells Xochi she's going to the bar tonight and smack that singer up! (If Jessi's flailing arms and knock knees are any indication, I don't think Garnacha's in any danger.) Xochi cracks her neck and rehearses a few Karate Kid moves.

Eli goes to pick up Valentina after school and is worried when she isn't waiting for him outside. The teacher assures him that Val is just using the bathroom, but Eli warns the teacher it's important not to let Val's old psychologist near her because she's not right in the head.

Valentina comes out and wants to see her friend Ray. Eli says sure, but first we're going to surprise someone.

Delia unhappily puts a piece of paper in front of Yuri, who signs it left-handed and very sloppily. She tells him to watch it and stay away from Jesús Garcia. He promises to be a good boy, but keeps saying how much he loves picadillo.

Still in outfits #4, Chucho and Alma are back on the beach and he's telling her about working in his parents' shop where he learned his saintly work ethic. He and Alma talk more mush and add another kiss to their flashback reel.

If you missed Cheryl's photo of the charming, fanciful, gravity-defying caballito posted to last night's recap, take a look!

Next time:
Chucho and Alma ride bicycles. I see a dark bedroom lit by candles, but let's not jump to conclusions. Delia worries about Chucho. Malvino and his dumb sidekick return. Yuri beats his bare chest with his fists.

Seriously, did I somehow overlook the pancakes? That doesn't sound like me.

Maybe pancakes tomorrow night?

Julie,

Thanks so much for this marvelous recap, and no you didn't miss the pancakes. I think those were teaser previews again. Maybe we will get to see them some time this week.

What a nice time Chucho and Alma are having in Cancun. I really liked that cenote swim, how sweet that was. Alma looks so relaxed and happy. I like her hair too. I like how they talked about themselves and what happened to little Sebas and to Chucho's parents.

I am thinking maybe Vero is starting to like Rogue just a little bit and he, her just a bit. He seemed to like that little smooch she laid on his cheek. He seemed to like it also he first time she gave him one, hmmmm.....

I had to laugh at Xochi and Jess, if only Jess knew who Xochi is at the club. I also like the interaction between Ferny and Xochi, too funny. Wait till he finds out who Xochi is at the club too, lol.

I wonder now what Yuri will be up to and what his plans for Chucho are. Delia sure was pithed she had to let him go. I hope she calls Chucho and tells him that Yuri is now out of the hoosegow.

I felt kind of sorry for Patymelt, cause I really do think she realizes how much she hurt Alma. I wonder if this will be a turning point for Patymelt and she may try to straighten out, hmmmm, one can hope ; )

Delightful recap. Loved the flagging of future flashback material, the careful notation of the luggageless traveler's wardrobe changes, and the details that flesh out the various characters' intentions and feelings (Xochi re: Fern, Vero and Rogue, Pati realizing loss of Alma).
I missed the episode, but feel little need to, though I do wonder at the visual behind that deadpan description of Rogue and the ice tongs.
Does either Fernando or Blanca have some "I'm a big star now, so no skin, gratuitous or otherwise" clause in his/her contract? A fully clothed swimming scene? Giggity, indeed.
CinFL

Julie...I do not watch this show, but I had to comment because I LOVE your title. .

Susanlynn - these people must know that we hang onto every morsel of food they show us. I love how they do the close-up insets of all the dishes.

I love Alma's hair too. She is always so smooth and polished and coiffed in the office. It's nice to see her looking relaxed. Blanca looks happier and more natural, too.

CinFL, I daresay you can live a long and happy life even if you don't see Rogue's tangle with the ice tongs, which is all too brief. But the scenes between him and Vero were interesting. I agree with Madelaine - this might end up being more than just a strategic alliance. It's also funny to see the New Xochi with all that mischief up her sleeve.

I have been wondering about the lack of exposed flesh on FC's part. I don't know if it's a contractual clause, but I'm sure it would be nice for him not to maintain that six-pack in perfect form for the whole duration, so maybe he only has to show them off on a few specific, scheduled occasions to give him time to prepare.

I don't know, though. He looks pretty good in those "smedium" shirts. Maybe Televisa is teasing us. Or maybe someone challenged them to do a take a more family-friendly/Univision-friendly romance. (That seems absurd; I think Televisa delights in making things difficult for Uni!)

Julie, I loved your recap especially the intro. The beach run did have that Bay Watch feel. Thanks for the good read this a.m.

With the pace and eterno retorno of previous romantic scenes they are really milking this beach escape for all they can get. Shameless! :)

Jarifa

Yeah, really, why get us so worked up that pancakes were being abused, and then not even show them? I understand your frustration Julie, and Love your recap.

I guess I have to go to the side of "well, this was cute". Not the usual TN romantic flare....maybe tonight...but it is the family viewing hour. I actually cracked up though in the cenote scene that they bothered to do those underwater scenes and there's Chucho with his shoes on, etc. Sort of lost that romantic impact. And there was that little glimmer of possible shirtless ness, but it was only one bicep. Call me shallow, but it's FC, throw us a bone here. The run on the beach--cheesiness at it's best.

And what was with the food last night?? We get closeups of goodies and fruit?? Maybe they decided to give us that instead of the abused plain pancakes. Okey dokey then.

I was wondering for awhile if Elias bought Vero her own place? I don't think he knows about Panfilo yet, so don't think he's buying him and Mari a place...but then I shouldn't presume. In any case, very glad he actually saw Marta and raised the red flags at school too. I just don't want to have Val hurt anymore.

At one time, Xochi would have been intimated by Jessica. Not so much now. So fun to watch her gaining in confidence and having fun. I can see her drive Ferny crazy...but since I like him too, should be fun to watch.

You know, we had a blanket throw when I was a kid that looked just like Vero's vest, tassles and all. Didn't like the throw either.

Daisynjay

Thanks so much, Julie. Your snark was hilarious. i especially loved "She is sleeping late again to conserve her strength for a long day of crazy bitchitude" and
"Regret what? Too many changes of clothing? Too nice a midmorning snack?) also "Paty comes to the office, where she is welcomed like smallpox."

As I watched last night I kept thinking just as you stated that this is all the kind of stuff that every TN couple enjoys just before the anvil drops. I loved your comments about the upcoming (sigh, heave) replay reel as they (separately) long for one another.

The Rogue / Vero scenes are wonderful. She was so funny as she tortured him with word pictures about what Jésus & Alma are up to. It's a good thing Patymelt has Renato waiting in the wings. I think Rogue's new passion is going to be Vero. That relationship should blossom just about the time that Rogue gets clearance from his doctor to resume nookie.

I love the new Xochi. She is so funny as she toys with Fernie.

Güera

Julie...Sometimes life imitates art....I am currently tutoring a businessman from Brazil. He went to Philadelphia last weekend and ate in a restaurant there. He showed a photo he took of a piece of cheesecake he had there !!!! He told me that they do not have cheesecake in Brazil. I 'll ask him today if he likes pancakes.

WHAT?
No cheesecake in Brazil??
Maybe there's no room for a heavy dessert after feijoada.

Julie, your deliciously dry humor really shines through in this recap. Well done amiga! I laughed all the way from beginning to end, starting with the pancakes. No pancakes, what a letdown! But at least they gave us several changes of clothes in one day which I thought was hilarious, considering Jesus has now most likely worn all his clothes this day.

A cenote, yay! But fully clothed? Hmmmph.

I'm also enjoying the Xochi transformation. Less obnoxious squealing and more snickering works for me. Great comment about Jess's flailing arms and knock knees. I think she will beat herself up before she injures anyone else.

Great recap Julie. Thanks!

Julie,
Well done from start to finish! What a smooth read! Many clever phrases already mentioned, but I will add another I especially enjoyed: "his passive hotness".

Fully clothed in the swimmin' hole. I didn't notice the shoes, but it figures. Maybe we won't get to see his toes till the wedding night.

On another note: is there something wrong with my eyes/TV, or does Fernando have really skinny legs? Is that just the style he's wearing? Is this a style that everyone's wearing and I haven't noticed because it looks extra-skinny on him?

Now, I know what was bothering me about the cenote scene last night. It looked so much like the sacrificial cenote at Chichén Itzá: Mayan ruins on the Yucatán Peninsula where the characters are. Anyway, it gave me the yuk factor even if it is a different cenote.

Jarifa

Absolutely fabulous beginning with the funny pancake/food obsession intro and then into "as for sex...."

Yes, count me as one who was anxiously waiting for some passionate coupling last night between our two leads--and nada nada nada. Nuts!

Still, your hilarious recap made up for it.

Favorite lines (some of which have already been mentioned:

worn her out with his passive hotness

she is sleeping late again to conserve her strength for a long day of crazy bitchitude.

Vero takes the hint (I didn't know that was possible.)

{and, the winnah!}

Paty comes to the office where she is welcomed like smallpox.

Absolutely belongs in the Julie Recap Hall of Fame.

Also loved the picture of the caballito which I missed yesterday.

Julie- OMG! You're recap introduction was a riot.

Jesus and Alma have to be the most Puritanical tn couple I have ever seen! We better get the promised nookie, and the pancakes, tonight.

I am also getting pleasure out of Xochi's sneaky game with Fer and Jessica. That whole scene in the coffee room was almost an exact replay (in reverse) of the beginning episodes when Xochi asked for love/seduction advice from Jess. Can't wait to see what happens if Jess does attack "Natasha" and gets put in a headlock or some other humiliating situation.

Julie as other have mentioned this was a brilliant recap. There were no pancakes, it wasn't you.

I'm glad Alma and Chucho are having fun. He needs to let her be angry for a moment.

Thanks, everybody.

I was truly flabbergasted when Vero took the hint. All Cantu did was say he'd have to wait till he and Rogue were alone and she knew it was time to go. But Chucho can say "Vero, I don't love you, I cannot love you, I will never love you" and she hears "YES!"

The coffee scene was funny. The only advice she had for Jess was "you could try that pheromone stuff" and Jess was like, "are you making fun of me?" LOL, Jess, you're the one who set up that joke in the first place! At least Xochi isn't charging you 500 pesos (or whatever it was) for it!

Julie, I love your recaps. Ilove PEAM beacause of the sheer silliness and the greatest literary device of all great romantic novels, "coitus interruptus". It keeps you coming back for more just to see the climax. Also love FC's biceps and Alma's eyes.

Julie, this was fabulous. I loved everything, especially the lines everyone else mentioned. So much food teasing, and no pancakes for you! Maybe tonight. Poor pancakes.

Well, the travel advertorial is working on me. I'm ready to run off to Playa del Carmen. Looks awesome! Not sure why Juicy and Alma couldn't buy swimsuits while they were shopping for a new wardrobe, though. Seems like swimsuits would be about the easiest thing to come by in a place like that! Did they throw the boat operator overboard so Alma could take the wheel?

I love Xochi's newfound spunk. She was hilarious teasing Ferny and Jess.

I'm very impressed that Chucho is such a gourmet cook! Who knew? I thought he only did pizza and such, lol. I kind of liked the boat going thru the, was it the hotel, it almost reminded me of a mini Venice. I'm with Julia, I want to go visit the Playa del Carmen too : )

What a refreshing recap. I loved the titled. My favorite was about Vero sleeping late for a long day of crazy bitchitude.
That must have been some shopping trip because there were so many clothing changes. Jesus just needed lots of shorts and very few shirts.
Yuri's back, this should be interesting- I wonder how long it will take for Jesus to win him over or to see the error of his ways.

Julie, Bravo...wonderful recap.

I'm so struck by the dearness of the relationship between Jesus and Alma in the last couple of episodes, and a little glad they are taking their time.

Maybe it was in the episode night before last that Jesus' goodness was particularly beautiful. Alma had just finished telling him about the sorrows wrought by her unconscionable father. I thought what Jesus did was give her a real hug and very gently tell her "that's past." or maybe, "that's over." It seemed like a true touch of healing and comfort.

I imagine the roller-coaster will return soon and dread what Rogue and company come up with next.

But FC is proving to be such a really sweet and good dear one in this role...and that keeps me tuned in.

Dona Felipa

Oh Julie, that was ridiculously hilarious. I love the title, but I also love the implicit subtitle: "stuff that lovers say shortly before the anvil squashes them."

Mads, Delia can't call Jesus to warn him about Ury because (TUN TA TUN TUN) HE FORGOT HIS CELL PHONE. Oh noes!

I'm not looking forward to Yurine trying to indulge his craving for picadillo, but I did enjoy his scene in Delia's office, especially his little shimmy and Delia's assistant's reaction to him.

I'm starting to think Rogue and Vero might take a roll in the hay before Juicy and Almighty do. I think they might have already, if Can-too hadn't been there.

Blue:

I had completely forgotten about his darn cell phone, Ay yi yi!

Delia is smart and resourceful, though. I think she could figure out how to reach him. It shouldn't be too hard for her to find out where they're staying or to get Alma's phone number.

Didn't he use Alma's phone to call Delia? So the number should be on Delia's caller ID.

It's also possible that no warning is necessary because Yuri doesn't strike me as very discreet.

I suspect Elias got a place for himself. I can't see him kicking Vero/Val out of the house, unless he plans on keeping Val.

I was surprised at how thin FC's legs were, too. They looked nice, I just expected them to be more beefy.

I was watching a Christmas movie on the Hallmark Channel this weekend, and Playa del Carmen was mentioned quite a few times.

Nanette

Nanette - I wasn't talking about FC's legs. I was talking about Fernando, the character.

Julie: I was confused. Not a new thing for me :)

Julie, whew! I thought the entire Chucho package was extraordinary. And he's a good runner too.

Julie, I am so sorry about the pancakes too and I even mentioned them in the advances on Monday night but they do that to us over and over and over. Thanks for the constant laughs, smiles and smirks you gave us while reading your smart recap. Giggity about does the action let down, but we could all sigh at the sweetness of Alma and Jesús finally getting time alone so no romanticus interruptus. Your essay on love with no pancakes was total enjoyment which I just got to tonight. I hope you go back and read your comments that are posted late.
Thanks too for mentioning the caballito of Agustín Cruz.

Thanks. Cheryl! :-)
