CI Cap. 83, 9/5/13 The Suspense Is Unbearable. Will Octavio Survive?

Previously, more or less
Octavio is stretched out in the plowed corn field—umm, let’s make that the desolate reaches of the uninhabited island where the plane crashed. He can’t feel his leg anymore and he’s sure this will be his grave. (You won’t need a grave, guapo, ‘cuz the animals are going to eat you.)

In that alternate reality known as Isla Dorada, Karim, Ed, and MariAle are holding a strategy session. MA’s mission statement—to be the first to find our fallen pilot. She loves him and will pay any price to save him.  (What happened to Don Ale’s private plane?  MA could have used it, with Ed as pilot.) They’ll leave in the morning and hope for luck.

Miguel and Lucia are entitled to chime in on a brother’s fate, so they do. Is the search a part of MA’s revenge on them or due to love for her estranged hubby?

New action, more or less
Lucia calls the doc to confirm MiniMigi’s surgery arrangements. He should be there by 8 am for tests before the operation. (We could compare this to actual pre-surgery protocols, but we won’t take the time since we have a search and rescue operation underway.)

A detour to the mainland forest or jungle area reveals a team of surveyors at work. No clues are given to their purpose: if they are marking boundaries, preparing for infrastructure work, or exploring areas where valuable minerals might exist.

Nearby, Ester sits on the ground near her shack, digging a hole with a shovel. (Is she too much a city girl to know you get better leverage standing, or is she just too tired?) Her neighbors wonder why she’s doing it, but think she’s too proud to talk to them.

Here’s How the Big Game Hunters Stage a Search
The search team, according to Karim’s plan, will split into North and South units and move in a circle around the place where the plane went down. They’ll look for tracks or clues, returning to home base where the support team of doctor, nurse and cook are stationed. (Don’t know how good the strategy is, but the search team main players look very fashionable.  Karim has a black shirt, Ed some camo cargo shorts, and MA looks lovely in boots, jeans, a lacy edged camisole, a stylish scarf and a sharp straw fedora over her braided hair.)

The searchers move about, searching.  Ed, on one team, is shouting Octavio’s name. Karim, on the other team, thinks this hardship is bringing them closer together, especially when MA trips and stumbles against him. Octavio remains in the dirt, thinking the voice he heard was his imagination.  (Time isn’t too clear, but for several days passing and no water, shouldn’t he have a little sunburn and some crusty lips?)

Doris and her sidekick, Mariana, are at home, with Doris fretting. There’s no word yet and his wife may be the one to find him. The object of her worry is still supine in the dirt, now envisioning his daughter and his wife, pleading for MariCruz to bring him water. Ed is still searching and shouting his friend’s name.

Public Service Announcement for Clean Water
Ester continues sitting and digging.  As with Octavio, her clothes are bedraggled, but her pale skin is showing little wear and tear. She explains to another woman that the men won’t dig a well, but she will try, even if she’s weak. She knows there’s clean water there. The boy who hangs around (name?) thinks she’s looking for silver and gold and then the city people would kick them out. She asks if he doesn’t want to grow?  Better to live peacefully, he thinks.  Leave her alone, she’ll keep digging. Community opinion says she’s going crazy.

Search Headquarters
The group is gathered for the evening in Karim’s silky tent pavilions, eating some dinner.  Ed is frustrated, thinking he heard a response to his cries. Karim thinks they should stick to the plan. They’ll search the entire place, they will find Tav or his remains, he promises. MA is fearful they won’t find him—she won’t make it if he’s dead. Is she regretting her promise, asks Karim? (Yeah, he would be on that, wouldn’t he?)

The next day, the group wonders how anyone could survive this long? Ed finds the epaulet lost from Tav’s shirt and sees some tracks. They’re out of time and will come back to that spot tomorrow.  MA is sad and miserable and Karim is sad and miserable to see her love for another man.

Meanwhile, two independent searchers spot the body in the field and go to the rescue. Tav is groaning in pain, with an injured leg so infected he might lose it. (The same leg he could have lost when MC shot him?)

Just as MariAle is saying every passing day makes it less likely to find Tav, a radio broadcast announces the lost pilot has been rescued by hunters and taken to a hospital in Mexico (DF)!  He has a serious leg injury, which worries the search team.

Late Night Misery Memo
Just in case we were too high with the joy of finding Tav, we visit the misery of JA and Ester to bring us down.  JA thinks he can’t let Ester get sick and die, he needs her to return to her native habitat.  Ester thinks her husband won’t come close to her, he shuns her. She did all he wanted and it’s not her fault things went wrong.

The next day, Ester takes flowers to the baby’s grave, saying she won’t leave him alone. Even if his dad doesn’t love him anymore, she’ll never leave him—nunca, nunca!

Rejoicing in the Ranks
Doris and Mariana, despairing over a bed full of newspapers, hear the good news broadcast on Tav’s rescue. (Doris is in a fluffy chiffon number. If I were gloomy over my missing man, I’d be in some sloppy sweats or pajamas.) She must go and be the first to see him and Mariana will go along.  Daddy Gov thinks she should hold off until the bad leg gets better. If they cut it off, does she want to marry a crippled man? (What a sensitive guy!)

Miguel calls Lucia to share the good news with her.  MA, Ed, and Karim are back home, leaving MA at her house. She makes them promise they won’t let Tav know MA searched for him. (I think it was in the newspapers, but Tav probably won’t read them.)

Lucia makes a couple of phone calls to Simone, the first to ask her to stay with Lucia for MiniMigi’s surgery. Ofelia is too scared to come to the city. They also discuss Ester. The second call is to announce Tav’s rescue, condition, and location.

MariAle converses with Raiza in her office, saying she’s tired from the trip and will go over the numbers later. Raiza reports that Doris rushed to Mexico to see Tav in the hospital.  MA emphasizes again that Tav is still married and not eligible for pursuit.

MA comments to Raiza on the Narvaez family and reviews the latest version of her revenge plan. Miguel is alright, but Lucia is pure evil. MA must own the Narvaez’ land, so it’s better she wasn’t the one who rescued Tav. With no truce, she will be able to fulfill her destiny and her vengeance.

Our Hero in the Hospital
A fuzzy-brained Octavio (ok, that’s a normal condition) awakens in the hospital asking the nurse what happened? She explains it all to him.  His first visitor, Doris, arrives to greet him. “Honey!”  She starts to touch his leg, then backs off.  After leaving the room, she explains to Mariana she couldn’t kiss him and the smell of disinfectant almost made her sick. Mari tells her she doesn’t really love him—he’s just a whim. Since they’re in the city, they decide to go shopping. (Doris inherited Dad’s sensitivity gene.)

A second visitor, Simone, greets Octavio.  He’s pleased to see his oldest friend from home and becomes quite gallant, saying he doesn’t deserve the honor of her visit.  She explains her support of Lucia during the child’s surgery and they catch up on JA and Ester’s miserable marriage. Ester may be losing her mind and JA seems scarred by MariCruz’ tragic events at the hands of the Narvaez.

          Time Out for More Misery
Said scarred servitor arrives at the Narvaez hacienda to visit Ofelia. He hopes Ofe can persuade Ester to return there, but Ofe thinks not. Ester never liked her and won’t listen to her.  She asks if JA wants Ester to be his wife and he says no. She won’t get involved in the situation, so JA says he’ll have to abandon Ester and leave her to her fate. (He could regret that once she sets up water contracts in the free lands.)

In Octavio’s room, Doris and Mariana return to spread more cheer. They obviously think Simone lacks style, communicated with raised eyebrows and eye rolls. Simone says it’s time she returns to Lucia and starts to leave. Tav calls her back for a hug and to introduce her to the cool girls as his oldest friend. He asks her to return with a surgery report on his nephew.

MariAle Cleans Up Loose Ends
MA goes to visit the Gov, her so-called fiancé. She mentions the hard times she’s been through, but wanted to say hello. Then she asks how he could let his daughter go to Mexico to visit Tav! He’s still a married man. The Gov says it was fine to go see him, but they really need to talk about themselves. MA didn’t take his opinion into account when she went chasing off to rescue her ex-husband (not ex, yet!).  Is she toying with him? (The answer to that—probably yes!)

Coming Attractions
MariAle brings Lupita to see her daddy in the hospital.  Doris walks in.

The recap and episode both seemed grim and flat to me; maybe it was all that gray dirt. At least we didn't have to see Octavio lost for many episodes. I forgot to include him telling Simone that his injured leg was better.

Thanks, La Paloma, for the great recap! I completely missed this episode tonight. A good thing about this telenovela is that it moves very quickly and so we never are stuck with anything for too long like Octavio crawling around. Too bad JA couldn't get lost somewhere never to be seen or heard from again.

Recap is hardly grim La Paloma. You did a great job with little to work with. But the episode was just weird and felt almost disjointed.

The whole rescue orchestrated by Karim would have been sensible if they spent time actually searching. Going up and down basically the same field sort of cracked me up ( although I am sure we weren't supposed to notice that). And of course, must stop for a nice gourmet meal...

What can one say about Doris? Her distain for her injured beau was hysterical. I guess she prefers them pretty at all times. But hats off to Tav. He won back a few points for me in how he treated Simona. He saw how she slunk away and how the two Mean Girls regarded her. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for Doris, but maybe a new start for Tav and Simona ( since we know for awhile there's no way he and MC will hook up because of her VENGEANCE plan)?

JA is a total Turd.

@La Paloma - I liked your recap. If it seemed flat to you, it's because you conveyed very well the feel of the entire episode - flat, flat, flat. In fact, the whole plane accident storyline was lame. Good thing it only lasted three episodes.

Thanks, much, La Paloma.

Yep, the search thing was ridiculous, March across a field in single file? Yep, that made a lot of sense. As did having 2 people on one team and 8 or so on another.

Yep, both Doris and the Guv showed their lack of a sensitivity gene. And Mariana, LOL. "Oh, he's likely dead, just blow him off."

Well Paloma, I thoroughly enjoyed this recap. Clever, biting, critical, but not mean-spirited and perfectly informing. My favorite line:

"He could regret that once she sets up water contracts in the free lands."

Hilarious yet insightful and timely.

A few criticisms of Karim's search plan:

No dogs

No ATVs

and why on earth after finding a vital clue, call off the search until the next day.

Maricruz may have promised Exmir Karim her precious treasure but I think that she should limit the payoff to a at most little heavy petting.

Maybe give those two hunters a shot at paradise.

Carlos

Oh, and though her attitude was not the best, Doris looked fabulous.

Carlos

Wonderful recap Paloma. Not flat at all.

I missed the first half of the episode, but it looks like I didn't miss much.

The best parts of the (half) episode for me was seeing the genuine warmth with which Tav and Simona greeted each other. There are very few scenes in this tn with normal, human interactions, so it struck me.

Tav must have a bionic leg, since the leg in danger of amputation was indeed the same leg in danger of the same fate after Mari shot him.

I enjoyed Awfelia telling JA what a jerk he is for trying to throw Ester back into the ocean. You broke it, you buy it, big boy.

I agree that the genuine warmth between Octavio and Simona was very sweet and welcome. She did such a great job of trying to fade away unnoticed when Doris and Mariana showed up. In fact everyone in that scene played his part perfectly. As has been mentioned by many here, the acting is often superb in this TN.

Carlos

Tks La Paloma

Why no aerial search???? MC I think has a plane or at least enough money to hire one.
Why isn't the airline searching????
All the passengers are probably snug in their beds at home.
Why do I ask such stupid questions? We know why, because this is Mejia estupidez, that's why!

I think MA is off the hook, because the Emir did not find Octavio dead or alive as he promised.

Thank you La Paloma == Great recap.

Thanks Audrey, I knew that she agreed to pay off whether they found him dead or alive , but I wasn't certain what would happen if someone else found him first or if he wasn't found at all.

I thought it was funny that the news stories kept referring to jungle. I only saw cleared and recently plowed fields, a few prickly pears, some bare shrubs, one semi-legitimate tree, and even a row of fence posts in the background. In fact those hunters almost tripped over Octavio.

Carlos

I really appreciate your recap especially because televisa's online version was totally screwed up for viewing today. But then the whole show is totally screwed up, so there's that.

So funny Octavio laying in a freshly plowed field. And then some hunters find him. Not exactly an uninhabited island.
So Karim gives everyone a whistle for the search. This is very high tech, I see.

Ester thinks she's going to dig for water with a trowel. And I bet she actually gets to water too, lol. She will just move those boulders out of the way by herself and just after giving birth.

Let's see how much more ridiculous this show will get. I can't wait.

The two "hunters" -- what in the world was there to hunt on that barren slice of sand?-- must have had incredible resources to get the near dead Octavio from his prone position to a ICU unit in Mexico City! Did they, unlike the Emir's "search party" (really more of a party than a search), have a cell phone to call for a medivac copter to rush our galan to the DF? But it really did save all of us from having to witness any more of the search party's antics. MA's scarf looked to me as if it had an 'animal' print to go in with the 'safari' theme.

@cathyx - "no, no, no" (quoted from you). Don't tempt fate with comments like "let's see how much more ridiculous this show will get. I can't wait." lol

@Carlos - newspapers kept referring to jungle because in both previous versions they did shoot in jungle and, as we know, the monkey writers on C.I. copy-pasted a lot from the previous versions. Too bad they forgot to inform Mrs. Mejia that she had to find a jungle location for this part.

thanks,La Paloma, for making that silk purse out of a siow's ear.

Doris's facial expressions are hilarious and familiar to me. They often bring back memories of mean girls who inhabited the suburban senior high I once taught at. sometimes, I am fearful that she might permanently damage her tiny, delicate facial muscles. Careful, Doris. Simona is so sweet by comparison.

I also thought it was funny MA swearing Karim and Eduardo to secrecy when it had been all over the papers, and his brother Miguel knows all about it.

But Tav will probably miss the news and papers. Now he might find out from Doris who could unthinkingly open her big fat mouth to rag on MA for the rescue attempt with Karim. That would be funny.

Latina, I say bring it on. I'm not afraid of the ridiculous. It could make this more entertaining.

Me too - keep the acting good and the plot ridiculous, and I'm happy!

I have to agree Audrey and cathyx - it seems the more ridiculous now this has gotten, the more I'm anxious to watch and see what insanity Mrs. Meija's monkeys can come up with. (Or this is Moctavio's revenge with his relatives for being taken out of the show. He was promised top billing and writing credit). I find instead of getting sad or upset most of the time, I'm giggling and looking for what other continuity or script issues they can come up with.

I also wondered why, as concerned as Ed was for his friend, they didn't write in a visit to his amigo first thing. I shouldn't wonder, I really shouldn't. But I am looking forward to father/daughter moments tonight.

Daisynjay, especially with ShutUpDoris walking in.

Thanks La Paloma---I loved your recap. Some of your lines were great. --- If Doris was in despair,
wouldn't she be wearing sweats or pajamas? I ask, does fashionable Doris even have a pair of sweats?
I also liked the way you described
Doris's trip to the hospital. LOL
No need to waste a whole day, let's
go shopping. Your description of Tav waking up fuzzy as his normal condition was a hoot--you are so right.

The search and rescue was unbelieveable. Two people off by themselves and everyone else walking together. How about spreading out a little. Several people in the rescue and only one person yelling OCTAVIO!! OCTAVIO!!
What happened to the others? Did the cat get their tongues?
I never saw Ed show the others the epaulet he found.---No dogs? Why wasn't the airline searching also or was this a private flight that the airline wasn't involved in? Oh well, we are supposed to think that everything was being done I guess.

The office scene with Raiza and Maricruz---both dresses were beautiful. If the producers of this novela slipped up elsewhere, they sure got it dight in the fashion department.

The fashion department? Well Ester's fashions aren't so good right now but she may be on to something. You go girl! Maybe you should get some help digging, you're not going to get very far digging sitting down.

Simone is staying close---save the rancho? Borrow the money from Simone.

Just thinking---How much money does a Mexican airline pilot make?
Oblivio now has hospital bills to pay or does his company pay? He has lawyer fees to pay, child support, room rent, food, night's out with Doris, restaurants, laundry---isn't this guy running low by now? He doesn't seem to be hurting financilly.

Vivi--You broke it, you buy it. YES

Countdown to tonight. How is Maricrus going to repay Karim for his help? I feel for Mari, I can't stand that guy.

Sorry for the double post. The robot said that I didn't do it right so I did it again and then two posts came up.
the gringo

La Paloma thanks for the recap. As others have noted you were NOT flat but the episode continued being crazy. You gave me giggles whereas the TN doesn't.

Glad this "search and rescue" nonsense is over.

ITA w/you all who enjoyed Tav with Simone. Doris continues to be muted when I view and I'm hoping Karim finds a new hobby soon.

Why does MC owe Karim anything? He didn't much except provide safari tents and canteens. Actual canteens.

I've just been reading the recaps and not watching, but was Octavio really called a hero? For flying when he shouldn't have and then crashing the plane? And then leaving the passengers to fend for thems...oh. Is it because he sacrificed himself knowing he'd be useless? That's fair then. He's a hero.

Why is Simone friends with these people? She sure puts up with a lot of nonsense.

Kelly

I cannot wait to see ShutupDoris smirk at that beautiful , tiny baby. This should be FUN .

kelly
Is it because he sacrificed himself knowing he'd be useless?

Oct isn't smart enough to realize he is a useless imbécil.

Maybe Aeromiedo isn't looking for him because they are thinking, good riddance.

Oh, yes. I'm soooo happy, that we finished with this part of the story. Octavio is the worse pilot ever. But may be the most lucky.
About Simona and her friendship with Narvaez family. I hope it's not a spoiler, because it's from the univicion site

So, as we said, tell me who is your friend and I will tell who is you. Is it not strange, that Simona never gave them any money? Even now for MiniMigi surgery. Ok, we never saw her hurt someone. But she also did nothing to stop Lucia. And she was happy to hear, that Octavio wanted a divorce from "salvaje". It is easy way to be good, when you do nothing at all.
I hate people like this.

Alegria

There are NO completely likeable adult characters in this, except Solita (only because she can't speak and the writers can't write her nonsense dialogue), and Tobi (and even he was a jerk in the beginning).

We can't blame Tav for flying in the storm. It was the airline's decision for the flight to go out (he even said naively to Jackie before they took off that the airline would have cancelled the flight if they thought it was too dangerous). But all the other idiot decisions were his own.

You could never write a grim recap la Paloma. Your headings alone are worth the time to read.

And I love it that you used the word "supine". One of my petty little nerd complaints is when people say "prone"(lying face down) when supine (lying face up) is the correct word. And mixing up the use of "lay" and "lie". And saying "loosing weight" instead of "losing weight".

Ye Gods...I'm on another rant today. CI seems to bring out the worst in me.

Loved your musings on correct heartbreak wear (definitely sweats and pajamas, and perhaps a quart of Haagen-Daz) as well as the requisite notation of Octavio's fuzzy thinking. I imagine the surgeons had to use less sedation than usual, since his brain is already only semi-functional.

But who cares? His hair looks great, he's evidently a fine kisser and Maricruz loves him. I say Scrap the Vengeance and let the Steamy Reconciliation begin!

Uh-oh, Judyb..Do I have to do another lay/lie tutorial ????

Loved the recap. Since O was lost in the 'jungle' the monkey should have been the one to find him. He could have gone to the gauzy tent camp to get MC to follow. Kind of like Lassie used to. I'm looking forward to Lupita visiting her Daddy in the hospital.

" I imagine the surgeons had to use less sedation than usual, since his brain is already only semi-functional."

And she is wiping off the afternoon ice tea from the lap top screen.

(Good one Judy!!)

Dorothy C., excellent! A search and rescue monkey. How great it would have been to have Octavio feverishly gasping out Maricruz's name, opening eyes, and coming face to face with... Monktavio.

I thought one of the reasons for Maricruz to go along on the expedition was because she is sort of an Octavio geiger counter... the closer she is to Octavio, the harder and faster her heart beats.

Carlos

Monktavio to the rescue...I like it. kind like Lassie...but creepier.

Maybe Maricruz would have had more luck finding Octavio had she announced an open competition:

Find a Pilot...Win a Night With the Casino Lady

That island would have been swarming with guys (and maybe even a few ladies) searching for Octavio.

Carlos

Carlos..Did you watch a novela on Telemundo last year called "Bella?" The leading lady was a lady of the evening at a fancy men's club or something who diid exactly that every evening....raffled off her charms.

Susanlynn, no I missed that. This is a little different since it would just be a one time thing and is for a good (perhaps that is debatable) cause.

This episode was such a letdown. No tearful, emotional, dramatic reunion. And if there's no payoff for Karim... well, imagine his disappointment. Their relationship has become very much like that between Wiley Coyote and Roadrunner, just with a different goal.

Carlos

Gringo, I was waiting for you to give some rave reviews to MariAle's stylist for her great safari look in this episode. I always like her hair in the big single braid and thought she looked as beautiful in these clothes as in any evening gown. I especially liked the hat.

Waiting eagerly for the daddy-daughter hospital visit.

Thanks Paloma!

I have finally caught up after being weeks behind! I resorted to reading the much more entertaining recaps than watching the actual show.

My Fave's

"Don’t know how good the strategy is, but the search team main players look very fashionable. Karim has a black shirt, Ed some camo cargo shorts, and MA looks lovely in boots, jeans, a lacy edged camisole, a stylish scarf and a sharp straw fedora over her braided hair."

Your comments on Doris and the Gov's insensitivity gene was also hilarious and on point.

Thank you, La Paloma. My translating is not that great, but I think I caught the little boy saying something about gold being buried on the Realengo. Could this mean that it's more like buried treasure rather than a mother lode?

I also liked MariAle's casual look, and I hopes she gets back to the ranch soon so that we can see more of it.
