La Tempestad, Cap. 34, Thursday, September 12: Madrina said there'd be days like this, there'd be days like this, Madrina said.

In the magical cave
DamFab and Marina lie together on the carpet of rose petals.  She kisses his bare, chiseled chest, looks adoringly into his Bambi eyes and says:
En tus brazos me he hecho mujer.  Eres el primer hombre en mi vida.
(In your arms, I became a woman.  You are the first man in my life.)

DamFab replies:
Quiero ser el último también.
(I want to be the last one as well.)

[Some on the Patio are fanning themselves so furiously that they miss the mutual professions of forever and ever.  In one corner, there is a debate going on:  why didn't he say y el único?  Technical loophole?]

A full moon rises. [In the damn sky, wise guys, in the damn sky.]

At Ernesto's little place in the country
Hernán can hardly believe his luck in stumbling upon Esthercita, known in these parts as "Hada."  He'll have to see what he can do to jolly her memory along on the sly.

Ernesto convenes a meeting of the bad boys.  He is looking to join forces with a rival gang.  Nan sits at his mentor's elbow.

Casa Salazár
Delfina smiles fatuously at the idea of MayuyaDisguisedAsEsthercita actually living in the house. Fulge thinks Delfina and Mayuya are both nuts but he's not going to fight them.

The World According to Ernesto
Hernán admires Ernesto's cool calculation.  Ernesto tells him that in their world, failure to calculate correctly can be fatal.  Nan is surprised -- with all the deaths Ernie has caused, he didn't think death worried him.  Is Nan saying that because of the way his parents died?  "No, of course not," he answers, displaying that grotesque rictus he tries to pass off as a smile.  His parents were looking for it and they deserved what they got.

Ernesto shows a philosophical bent:  "No one wants to die,  You avoid it by taking advantage of the evil that people have within them."

Nan demurs:  "Some people have not a speck of evil."

Not according to Ernesto.  Everyone has evil within though some may repress and hide it.

A Love so Perfect that…it is an Anvil Magnet
Dam is walking Marina home, a walk marked by hand-holding, smooching, dazzling smiles.  The lovers are luminous and so is the pueblo in the morning.  They will be together forever.  The others will come to understand soon enough.  No one can keep them apart.

More Wisdom of Ernesto Contreras
"Listen up, Hernán: love, nobility, goodness and all that crap -- all they do is make you weak.  And frankly, I notice you've been getting soft lately.  All those screw-ups in R-Lay-Dee, they show your weakness.  And you weren't always like that!"

Marina, alone in her bedroom, is so happy, she feels as if she is dreaming. Uh oh.

Ernesto urges Nan to see the error of his ways -- for his own protection!

As soon as Ernie leaves him, Nan thought-bubbles for us on the Patio.  He actually hates the old SOB for killing his parents [this may be the first normal emotion we've seen from him].  The day of his vengeance is approaching.

Nan sits in Ernesto's chair and vows to destroy him and end up with all his money and his power.  The red sky (sunrise, I suppose) is briefly superimposed on seething Hernán and makes us think of the place where he is destined to pass eternity.

The sky is lucent now, as lucent as Eusebia's soul.
She listens to DamFab's happy announcement -- he's going to marry the woman he loves -- and then makes an announcement of her own:  Not to be a buzz-kill or anything (No quiero ser ave de mal aguero) but she dreamed of Esthercita and the Pest was alive!

Shut up, Bea
Marina tells Bea and Becky over the breakfast table:  DamFab proposed to her and she said yes!  Becky is delighted and jumps up to hug her niece.  But Bea looks sour.  She is absolutely against Marina marrying the captain.  Yes, she said she'd give Dam time so she could know him better.  But this?  This is a betrayal of her trust!  This man who has only been widowed for a few days wants to marry her?  It's not surprising coming from him because he has no moral sense. But what about Marina? Has she forgotten her principles?  Or maybe she has actually become the woman that the whole town is pointing fingers at?

Marina, devastated by her mother's attack, leaves the room.  Rebeca looks at her sister and shakes her head.

I'm glad she's alive but...
Dam assures his madrina that he is happy that Esthercita is alive.  Still -- oy vey.  Eusebia strokes his hair and reminds him that his and Marina's love is not impossible.  But they will be tested.  Ay, Dios mío.  Marina.

Aunt Becky comforts Marina, who is still reeling from her mother's words.  When did Bea change into a tyrant?  She used to care about her happiness and now all she seems to want is obedience.  Why can't she understand that Marina is only defending her love?

Beatriz comes into Marina's bedroom and asks for a moment alone with her daughter.

May-coo-coo says goodbye to the old dump she used to call home.  She leaves a sentimental farewell note for daddy:

Papá,
Me largo para siempre.  No me busques.  Y si me encuentras en la calle, tampoco me saludes.  No quiero volver a saber de ti, viejo inútil.
(I'm leaving forever.  Don't look for me.  And if you see me in the street, don't greet me either.  I don't want to hear from you again, useless old man.)

[I guess no one ever told her about not burning bridges, huh?]

Beatriz is sorry.
For the rhetoric, maybe, but not for the substance.  If Marina doesn't want to marry Hernán, then maybe someone Hernanish, someone on her level.  Okay, for now Marina wins.  But at the first threat to Marina's happiness, Bea is going to sweep her away from R-Lay-Dee.

May-coo-coo is a natural leader.
She orders the Salazar maid to hand-wash her, that is to say, Esthercita's, clothes.

She summons Toribio, the third and most benign cop in the pueblo, and bullies him into following her orders -- after all, she is almost one of the family --  and telling no one else about them.  He is to go to the fishery and write this on the wall…

Hada has a bad dream.
She wakes up, frightened.  She tells Ernesto she was surrounded by fire in the middle of the sea.  It seemed so real… and there was a man there.  She couldn't see his face.

But we can.  DamFab sits on the dock and remembers Eusebia's words:  she saw Esthercita in a dream and knows that she is alive.

Macario has seen it all
So he is only mildly surprised to find Hernán all alone, giggling like a schoolgirl.  Nan says he's curious about Ernesto's woman and the fact that she can't remember her name.  Not Macario.  Nothing surprises him anymore.

R-Lay-Dee
Rosario and Lázaro have a bite to eat at an outdoor café.  She wants to know what he and Fulge were talking about the day before.  Fulge is bad news and she doesn't want her boy anywhere near him.  Laz knows all about Fulge -- everyone in town does -- and he can take care of himself.

Ful-of-himself-io isn't exactly giggling.  Chuckling, maybe.  What a lucky bastard he is to have a wife and lover living with him under the same roof.  And not only that, adoring each other.

May-coo-coo enters his office and locks the door behind her.  She was waiting for him in her room last night…

Fulge peels her off his chest and sets her straight.  He isn't one to be tied to a woman, even less so to one who disguises herself as his daughter.  If she lives in his house, she'll have everything she needs and now and then he'll pay her a visit at night.  But that's it.  She came on to him (te insinuaste) and he responded.  Before then, she was so insignificant, he didn't even see her.

But May-coo-coo has had many years of humiliation training in the Esthercita bootcamp, so she cannot be shamed.  She tries again and again he pushes her away.  If she wants to pass for Esthercita to make Delfina happy, that's between the two of them. "But you're not fooling me, Estheryuya!"

"Estheryuya" is glad she doesn't have to fake it for him.  So to be clear: he's not happy with Delfina, so why not leave his wife and marry her?

¿Qué?

May-coo-coo thinks it's a swell idea.  She's young, she's passionate, she's coo-coo…

Marina and DamFab are comparing notes at the empacadora when Olinto comes in with a couple of workmen.  They are looking for paint.  What for?  Olinto tries to fib but is a terrible liar.  Dam gets him to admit that there is some ugly graffiti on the wall.  And it insults Marina.

Ernesto breakfasts alone.
Macario senses that his boss is troubled.  Ernesto admits that Hada had a dream that concerns him.  He worries that she is starting to remember her past.  In the dream,  there was a man she couldn't identify.  Ernie wants to investigate.  Maybe the guy who sold her knows something more.  Maybe she talked in her sleep.  He wants to know who he should be on the lookout for.  He is not going to lose her -- he'd kill her before he'd let that happen.

Hernán still has the giggles.
He is back in R-Lay-Dee and reflecting that an anonymous call or two to Ernesto should be enough to make him insane with jealousy.  Oh how he would have loved telling the old man that his "wife" is married to Damián Fabré -- maybe it would have given him a heart attack!  [Cue the rictus grin.]

The Attack of the Mayuya Monster, Part One
The workmen at the empacadora are preparing to paint over what is clearly May-coo-coo's message and Toribio's handiwork:

Marina Reverte eres una ramera, la verguenza de este pueblo. Lárgate.
(M.R. you are a slut, the shame of this town.  Go away)

Dam, Marina and Olinto come out in time to cross paths with Rosario and several local women.  Rosario tells them they can erase the writing but they can't hide the truth, the stain on Marina's soul.  When DamGentlemanly defends Marina's honor, Rosario spews her venom in his direction, accusing him of having a poisonous influence on her Lazarocito.  DamStraight calls her out on her hypocrisy and her pretense of piety.  Then he turns to the other women and pleads with them not to be swayed by Rosario's malicious gossip.  They know him.

The Attack of the Mayuya Monster, Part Two
Beatriz is pondering a bowl of fruit when she is startled by the sudden appearance of Estheryuya.  ¡No puede ser!

DamProtective and Marina walk along the seawall talking over the problems with the townfolk.  Marina says many people are coming to her defense.  Dam will make sure the baddies leave her alone.

Speaking of baddies, Hernán chooses just that moment to join them.  He wants to know which office is his. His office isn't ready yet?  Fine.  He'll have a desk moved into Marina's office and they can work side by side.

As for DamFamiliar, it's time to for him to address Nan formally.  He is the boss now.  DamFisherman can go fish while Nan and Marina do grownup work at the fishery.  Dam will do just that.  But first he wants to share some good news with Nan: he and Marina are getting married!

Hernán hoots with laughter at the idea of their wedding.

Marina goes off to order a desk for Hernán.  DamFamiliar, left alone with Nan, immediately switches back to the informal "tu."   What is Nan trying to pull?  Nan intends to be as close to Marina as possible; whenever DamFab is at sea, he will be on land with his sweetie. Dam warns him not to come looking for problems.  Nan isn't afraid of a simple sailor, a fisherman, who thinks every problem can be solved with his fists. And hear this, DamDeluded:  He and Marina are not going to get married!

It is Dam's turn to laugh.  Nan's jealousy must have burned out some of his neurons.

"Think what you want," says Nan ominously.  "You'll see."

Beatriz has gotten over her initial shock and now knows it is Mayuya, not the ghost of Esthercita, who stands before her.  Mayuya has gotten so big for her britches that she is now speaking in the plural:  "We don't want you and your daughter in this town."

Bea strikes back by telling May-coo-coo that for all of her attempts to imitate Esthercita, she will never be more than her shadow.  She is too vulgar to really seem like her.

Mayuya strikes back by…striking!  She slaps weak Beatriz hard and says "Your daughter is worse than I am because she's a murderer."

Mayuya walks away, unseen by Rufis or José or Rebeca.  (Where is everyone?)

Bea is left reeling, out of breath.  She sinks to her knees, clutches at her chest.

Marina comes back from the empacadora and joins DamJealous -- "I don't like that fool near you all the time!" -- on the seawall again.  She admits she kind of likes seeing him jealous. They smooch and hug and smooch some more.

Hernán gets back to his mansion on the sea and lets his crazy way out.  He laughs, he shouts, he throws around a couple of chairs.  And he vows not to give up the fight for Marina.  He is going to win her over.  And if he has to, he'll bring back the E Bomb, whatever it may cost him to do so.

Marina and Dam find Beatriz sprawled on the floor in a dead faint.  DamStrong lifts her in his manly muscular arms and carries her to the couch.  Marina cradles her mother's head in her lap.  Bea comes to.  What happened?

May-coo-coo is back in the Salazar house enjoying a good laugh.  What a scare she gave Marina's mom!  They're sure to leave town now!

"What do you mean, someone came in here and hurt you?" asks Marina frantically.  Bea refuses to say.  [Bea, this is NOT the time to shut up!]

Mexico City
Mercedes is about to go into her club when she sees Doll coming towards her.  "I know where your daughter is," says the hard-hearted hooker. "I can take you to Magdalena."

Marina is appalled that Bea has been attacked.  Dam tries to tell her that not everyone in town is bad.  A little while ago, Marina believed that too.  But not now.  She is convinced that the whole town is devoted to hurting her and her mother.

She looks at Bea and asks her directly:  "Do you want to leave this town?"

Bea answers simply:  "Yes."

"Well we're leaving right now.  And we're never coming back."

Dam!

Avances
Dam confronts Mayuya with the knowledge that she is Fulgencio's lover.
Hernán and Damián go nose to nose.
Mercedes follows Muñeca in search of Mercedes.

good morning, NOvelamaven..I like your title. now on to read what I know will be a fun recap.

NovelaMaven-another wonderful recap.
I loved, "The red sky is briefly superimposed on seething Hernán and makes us think of the place where he is destined to pass eternity."

I had to look up rictus-wow, perfect term for Hernan's smile. It also fits that weird picture of Estercita that MayUBcrazy took to the beauty salon for that horror of a makeover.
I'm wondering how DamStraight finds out Mayua is bedding down Foolencia. ?
Love Dam and Mar together, but why is there always this precept that "I am now a complete woman because I am in the arms of a man". ?

A glorious Friday, enhanced by this enthralling and fun filled recap. The day turned sunny as I read the title and savored:"A
full moon rises. [In the damn sky, wise guys, in the damn sky.]", "lets his crazy way out" and "...displaying that grotesque rictus he tries to pass off as a smile" (amazing).

NovelaMaven, this was superb...

The lovers were mesmerizing. Am I a bad person admitting the dialog was of no interest as his "bare, chisled chest" commanded my full attention?? Sigh.

So Hernan is going to move into Marina's office? Why doesn't he just move into the house so he can sidle up to her 24/7...

"May-coo-coo" used to be magnificiently evil, but with her altered appearance and alter ego, she is simply BSC - how can anyone take her seriously? Bea's smart reply: "she will never be more than her shadow. She is too vulgar to really seem like her" was on point.

I can't not feel for Bea in that if my daughter was being slandered and publically reviled, I would want to take her and leave as well. May-coo-coo has made it perfectly clear she will make Marina's life a living hell. While Dam and Marina could likely rise above that, as a mother, it would be a heartbreaking situation for Bea to see her daughter maligned day aftger day. I'm simply saying I feel for her and can't help but sympathize in this instance.

The reason for Dam and Ester's marriage - noble intentions without love or commitment on Dam's part, don't matter here. Ester has barely been "buried" and getting engaged so quickly might not have been the wisest course.

Thanks again NovelaMaven. You have made my day!

Diana

Thank you, Novels maven for an outstanding and concise recap.
I loved the "grotesque rictus" he tries to pass off as a smile. So true. He makes the smile into something ugly. Hernan reminds me of Norman Bates from Psycho. I'm just waiting to see the Bates Motel and the no vacancy sign.
Since when did Ernesto become a philosopher. Is he kidding?. That's debatable and I don't agree that-Everyone has evil within though some may repress and hide it.
Yep, the first normal emotion for Hernan is his hate for Ernesto.
That anvil ceremony should be interesting.
Bea is such a party pooper. A true, in touch mother would see her child's happiness. Here's the contrast between Bea and Mercedes. DamFab betraying her trust is such a lame excuse and she forces me to roll my eyes upward whenever she speaks. She had no problem with a lunatic throwing a temper tantrum because she wouldn't lie for him, so in my book she missed the judging of character chapter. Thank goodness for her aunt, who is there to support her. Tia Becky all tried to infuse some common sense into Bea but to no avail. Bea's logic is so warped. She never learned that money doesn't buy values.
Mayuya or Estheryuya as Fulgencio refers to her, has totally lost it. That hair dye killed the last of her brain cells, not that she had many to begin with. I love your name for her May-coo-coo.
Does she really think that Fully will marry her? I'm glad that he put his ridiculous cards on the table.
We should all have a DamProtective in our lives. The one on one with Hernan was excellent. You could feel the hate between these two.
Rosario is another one, I can't wait until her little secret is revealed and her holier than thou attitude is brought to light.
It bothered me how easy Estheryuya gained access into Marina's house. Is there a door? I like what Bea told Estheryuya - a monkey dressed in silk is still a monkey- I couldn't stop laughing.
Your ending- Dam- brilliant.

What a recap NM!! I started having cable issues about this time last night as storms were moving through and lost the show a few times. You are a savior filling in the details.

Now thank goodness, I got the beginning. And no, Diana, not a bad person. I am right there with you. It was all blah blah blah, love you...and I was just focised on Sweet William's physique.

So in between outages, got a glimpse of the crazy hitting this town. (Maybe something in the water?) Is there a good psychiatrist in town? or maybe there should be. Frankly, at this point if I was Marina, I'd get our of Dodge too with my mother if it came to people getting that physical and nuts.

So we can figure Hernie will get his in the end, but it will be interesting to see how he manipulates Ernesto and eventually brings him down too. Nothing better for plot than two baddies going after each other.

NovelaMaven:

What a gem of a recap! This recap is a sparkling diamond reflecting your most wonderful turn of phrase.

I too liked the word rictus for Herny so perfect in the way he smiles. His smiles are all fakey and rigid. The only time he really smiles is when he is alone with Marina. I too see his revenge against Ernesto when Ernesto least expects it.

Ernesto is like the Godfather of the Mafia. The guys around that table looked like Mafiosi. All the bling on that one guy.

I too had to laugh at Fully calling Esteryuya, it was too funny, but what isn't funny is that he told her he will still visit her at night, yuck! How can he even entertain bedding someone that looks remarkably like his own daughter? Just yuck!!!!!

I feel bad for Bea, but not her attitude. You'd think she would consider the source of all the slandering, Maycucu! I get why Bea wants to leave RLayDee, but it would be better for Bea and Marina to stay put and face down the tormentors. I too was wondering where the heck Tia Becky and Jose were while Maycucu slapped Bea. I also don't like the fact that Bea is trying to control Marina's choice of guy. Really! As someone said the other day, Marina brings in good money, and she doesn't need some man to protect her. Look who Marina went against in the beginning of this TN. Having thrown Ernesto into the hoosegow was a really brave thing to do, she didn't care who he was. She wanted justice!

I too really like Dam Delicious and Marina together, they are very sweet, but getting married so soon after Estercita "died" is a little soon. Even though we all know why Dam Delicious married Ester, a lot of the people in town don't. That's why they have such a bad 'tude about Dam Delicious and Marina, especially Marina.

Rosario should just shut up! The nerve of this woman. She should talk. I can't wait for her anvil to come to light, as in Fully being the baby daddy. I wonder what those self righteous ladies of the town will think of her then? I hope they shun her too.

I can't believe Tiberio wrote that stuff about Marina on the wall of Neptune. He was the only good cop in town.

I think Doll is going to soak Mercy for money. I wonder if she will really take Mercy to Maggie? I also wish Mercy would pay some attention to Neptune so she can see the way Herny is throwing his weight around. Maybe Jose will report what he sees. I hope Herny has a hissy fit somewhere where Jose sees it. I don't like the fact that Herny wormed his way into Neptune.

I can't wait for the DamJustified confrontation with Maycucu tonight!

NovelMaven:

Also liked the title and the Spanish you put in your recap ; )

Thanks, Novelamaven, for that fantastic retelling.

this novela is certainly moving along. I am fascinatied by Esteryuya. Ha..good name. I fear for Delphina because I think Maybe-yu-r-in-my-way might decide to get rid of her so that she can have Ful-of-it all to herself. Having written that, may I just say...bleccchhh. And barging right into the house and harassing and smacking Bea. yikes. Where was BigArmedJose ???? and BigMouthBrcky ???? This girl has a great big anvil hovering directly overhead. There is no way for her to avoid the pie art that is barreling towards her. YAY

I loved all you DamAdjectives. !! May I just add that DamSeductive looked like DamSatisfied after the noche de Amor in the Sexytime Love Cave. Concerning the premature marriage proposal, perhaps DamTiredofWAiting realized that a marriage offer was necessary to ...how shall we say...seal the deal with the virginal Marina. He was thinking "if I like it than I'd better put a ring on it...or at least, a weed ring."

Novela Maven, Love the recap. Snarky yet lighthearted and zippy. (Sounds like I'm describing a wine, doesn't it?) GREAT title!

I almost fell off my chair when Fully called M'Coocoo Estheryuya. He's playing our game, the old dear.

Some of your best descriptions (but not all): "grotesque rictus" is perfect, [I guess no one ever told her about not burning bridges, huh?], the E Bomb, [Bea, this is NOT the time to shut up!]. I know there are more but those are the ones I remember at the moment.

Daisynjay, ITA about two baddies. And dontcha know that Macario will be in the mix somehow. Plus, his revenge will give Hernan something besides Marina to think about.

Emarie, I wonder if we will ever outgrow that "I am a woman in your arms" crapola? Probably not in our lifetime.

Novela Maven, thanks for taking over for EJ on shut short notice. I enjoyed this episode, lots going on, and you made it even more fun. Thanks!

Thank you NovelaMaven! And thank you to all the recappers and commenters this week - I am always too late to the party to comment and give my thanks, but today, I am going to be a little bit late to work cause I want to comment (perhaps I need an intervention....?)

I haven't seen the epi yet, nor read the entire recap, but I started laughing at "In the damn sky, wise guys, in the damn sky"!
Ha!!

Ana

I laughed at: A Love so Perfect that…it is an Anvil Magnet. So sad, so true, so inevitable.

Diana, I understand your feelings about Bea's concern for Marina. However I think part of her concern is that her mind has been poisoned by Hernan. I think her character flaw is that she is a bit clueless and accepts things at face value. I get the feeling that Ariel always took care of her, and now Marina takes care of her. She just lets things happen and doesn't question why. Like why did her husband never tell her he owned a fishery? Why did she never know he visited R-Lay-Dee and brought their daughter along too? Has she never been worried about Marina finding out she's adopted? I was going to say isn't she the least bit suspicious about Hernan constantly popping up to help Marina, but I think that makes total sense to her because she doesn't see him being crazy like we do. I think I would wonder, though, why he is always around.

I do agree, however, that this immediate engagement might not have been the wisest course. But hey, this is a telenovela and we need problemas, estupideces and amnesia!

Thanks NovelaMaven, very well done once more. I can always count on you for some additional laughs and what a crisp ending:

"Dam!"

Shouldn't Marina be having second (and third) thoughts about taking Hernán on as a partner after his little display on the dock?

When Hernán came storming in, mad as a wet hen, and I saw those elaborate blown glass terrariums my heart soared... some major mayhem and shattered glass ... but what a letdown... he goes out by the pool and tosses a plastic lawn chair. That's it? ...Wimp. The pink pants fit.

I was hoping for at least a little angry violin scrapping.

Carlos

NovelaMaven – Terrific recap. Thanks for including May-coo-coo’s letter and signage. Some of my favorites:

“More Wisdom of Ernesto Contreras”

“Macario has seen it all … So he is only mildly surprised to find Hernán all alone, giggling like a schoolgirl…”

“And if he has to, he'll bring back the E Bomb”

Estercita was so calm to be in bed with Ernesto. Are we sure they aren't putting Prozac in her wine?

While Bea’s blinders about Hernan are understandable, Marina’s are not. Didn’t Marina see Hernan laugh maniacally in their faces when DamFab said he and Marina are getting hitched? Why does Marina think Hernan wants his desk in her office? She should realize now that making him a partner was a mistake.

Madelaine – ITA “How can he even entertain bedding someone that looks remarkably like his own daughter? Just yuck!!!!!”

Rosario’s venom against Marina surprised me, but I guess she blames DamFab for Laz cutting the apron strings and Mariana is guilty by association.

Niece, yesterday Novela Maven said she felt Rosario is among the least sympathetic "innocent" characters she has ever seen. I agree with that and wondered why her character is so irksome. The stupid shrieking and wanting to keep her son a mama's boy aside, why is she so hot to condemn Marina? I am thinking of two possible reasons. 1) Marina has a man who loves her and will do anything for her. Rosario did NOT have that with Fulgencio. He had his way with her and cast her aside. She has lived in the same town with him all her son's life and has clearly grown bitter. So Marina has what Rosario never had. 2) Humans can be hypocrites. Rosario and Mayuya cast judgment upon Marina very quickly, when it is they who have actually done what they accuse Marina of. (Before she actually did anything I might add.) I think Mayuya started it, but Rosario was quick to jump on the bandwagon.

A full moon rises. [In the damn sky, wise guys, in the damn sky.] Epic!

Thank you for the entertaining and snarky recap.

This is the first time I see Marina carefree and relaxed around DamGotTheGirl. Besos! Non-interruptus! For the entire episode!

Fully sees the crazy, Fully calls the crazy, Fully boinks the crazy with no strings attached. Practical man.

OK, His Hotness gets all his TV women pregnant on the first night they lose virginity to him. Will Marina be pregnant with DamBaby as well?

Sylvia, I agree with you on Rosario. She lived her entire life alone, in shame and guilt, harboring a secret, not being able to be truthful even with her brother. She sees Dam and Marina being open and honest about their love and it drives her crazy.

Why shouldn't they suffer for breaking the rules the same way she suffered? Although her suffering was self-inflicted, she feels righteous. She has to punish them, otherwise her own self-imposed punishment is meaningless.

Oh, Carlos, but think of the poor help that has to clean up that mess. Can you imagine the work involved in dealing with those terrariums? Hernan may be a wimp, but his staff may appreciate that fact.

Actually, to be honest,I've been wondering if they got some sort of agreement to film at that house location as is because they have been ever so careful to not be messing with the interior much, and most scenes are filmed outside.

So at this point only the Padre and DamFab know the marriage was annulled? Everyone else thinks Dam was widowed? How exactly is Estercita being alive an obstacle if the marriage was annulled?

Thanks much Novela Maven.

Carlos...I had the exact same thought as you did. When I saw those glass terrariums, I was sure that Hernie's wrath would be directed at them. Like Daisynjay, I've noticed that most scenes at that house are shot outside. The contract must include a provision that nothing in the house is damaged.

First, this is but a pale shadow of the brilliance Dr. EJ would have spun from this Thursday tale. (We can expect her back in this spot next week.) Un abrazo fuerte from the Patio, dear Elna June. It is never the same when you are away.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words.

Susanlynn, you crack me up. But watch out. No one born after the Eisenhower administration is likely to walk away humming the title. :D

By the way, I don't think DamSincere was gaming Marina with his proposal. They have both had recent brushes with death (thanks to Pink Pants) and they are in a carpe diem frame of mind.

EMarie, so glad you liked the recap. I'll have to take another look at that scary Esthercita photo. Was that a rictus grin too? Good catch.

Diana,
Am I a bad person admitting the dialog was of no interest as his "bare, chiseled chest" commanded my full attention??
I don't understand the question. :D

I don't fault Bea for trying to protect her daughter. I think some absolutes make sense:

If he ever lays a hand on you...

If he ever cheats on you...

If you ever find him cruising the dock wearing the Pester wig, the mermaid dress, and cruel blue shoes (thanks, Cap'n)...

Then yes, get your girl away from him and fast.

But:

If her relationship with him leads to the slightest bit of suffering, even if he is totally innocent...

... then telling her to pull out under those circumstances is hopelessly naive. Life brings suffering (especially when you are living an allegorical kind of life) and love is what gets you through it.

Tablet Jefa,
"[Bea] had no problem with a lunatic throwing a temper tantrum because she wouldn't lie for him"

I know! It is amazing how much slack she is willing to cut Hernán.

May-coo-coo is Cap'n Sylvia's creation, not mine -- It is fun, isn't it?

Daisynjay,
"Is there a good psychiatrist in town?"

Hmm. TN shrinks tend to be a bad lot. In that town, I'd put my money on an exorcist.

Mads:
"Ernesto is like the Godfather... The guys around that table looked like Mafiosi

They do. That subplot looks like it has been plucked out of a narconovela without the narco- part. These animals trade in women and something else. Arms? Money laundering?

Sylvia:
"I almost fell off my chair when Fully called M'Coocoo Estheryuya. He's playing our game, the old dear.

I know. As Mads said above, it was too funny!

Ana:
An "intervention"? Hardly. Raise your virtual TempeTippee Tequila Cup and let's toast to our shared addiction! :)

Carlos:
I also expected to see shards of flying glass and was a bit disappointed. So last night, it was lawn chairs in the yard. What's next, Storm Cellar™ nerfazos? Pshaw!

Niecie:
"Estercita was so calm to be in bed with Ernesto. Are we sure they aren't putting Prozac in her wine?"
Yeah, I'm wondering about that too. Maybe Macario is an image consultant cum psychopharmacologist...

Vita:
"Fully sees the crazy, Fully calls the crazy, Fully boinks the crazy with no strings attached. Practical man.
Hahahaha. Yup, a sociopath for all seasons.

Audrey:
Good question about the status of the PesterDam marriage. We never saw them married por lo civil. Still, Pester breathing --> Pester causing problems. And won't May-coo-coo be surprised...

NM I just don't know how you do it! I could tell immediately it was one of your masterful recaps. You are funny and a good teacher at the same time.

I particularly loved your sub-titles today:

"I'm glad she's alive but..."

"Beatriz is sorry...for the rhetoric, maybe, but not the substance"

"May-Coo-Coo is a natural leader"

So funny yet so profound!

Carlos, I had the same thought when I saw those glass terrariums. I think Herny won't throw anything heavier than his whiskey glass.

Susanlynn, I think you mentioned you were a teacher. How lucky your students are to have someone as funny as you for a teacher!!!

I, too, am very interested in what, exactly, is going on in Hada's mind. I get that she has no memory but isn't there a scrap of the old Pester that would be revulsed at going to bed with a 60 something dirty old man? YUCK!

Thank you , NovelaMaven for one of your signature, fabulous recaps. Oh and "Dam!" at the end was PERFECT.

Katy

I so look forward to OldSpoiledEster gazing on Esteryuya..complete with bow ....YAHOO. Let the crazy games begin. That is going to be classic. We all remember how much Pestercita loved to verbally abuse May-Your-Life-and Stuff -Be-Mine . I cannot wait for OldEster to reclaim her look and her stuff. May can probably keep Delphina and awFulDad as far as Estercita is concerned.

NovelaMaven--Having plumbed the depths of your wonderful recap for all the DamAdjectives, I can now thank you (and so will Vivien). Brilliant as the red sun rising above the clouds and the moon rising in the torch lit cave.

BTW, I was born before the Eisenhower Administration and I don't remember this song (is it a song?). Please let us in on the secret.

Mauricio, the DamList from yesterday was not exhaustive, it was just a tempting taste of what is to come.

Carlos, this is what I get for getting started so late. I saw those terrariums and just knew they were going to end up in shards with sand and crawly creatures all over the floor. And when I saw that, for all Nan's anger, he only throws a plastic chair about 10 feet? What a Wimp, I said. (I deliberately avoided prefixing it with Dam, because that prefix is reserved exclusively for manly man with a bare chisled chest and Wet White Pants.)

The whole episode was a hoot, as was the recap and the comments.

NovMav--Most of your exquisite turns of phrases have been mentioned, but I really liked:

.."If Marina doesn't want to marry Hernán, then maybe someone Hernanish, someone on her level."

.."..May-coo-coo has had many years of humiliation training in the Esthercita bootcamp, so she cannot be shamed."

.."May-coo-coo thinks it's a swell idea. She's young, she's passionate, she's coo-coo…"

.."Beatriz is pondering a bowl of fruit when she is startled by the sudden appearance of Estheryuya."

.."Mayuya has gotten so big for her britches that she is now speaking in the plural: 'We don't want you and your daughter in this town.'"

You really enjoy skewering Maycucu, don't you?

..and finally, "Dam!"

Aw shucks, Katy. Thank you.

"I get that she has no memory but isn't there a scrap of the old Pester that would be revulsed at going to bed with a 60 something dirty old man?"

I know. Major ICK factor. But now that Hada is having these dreams and flashbacks, it looks like she's on the way back. Will she be canny enough to keep it to herself? Will she keep playing "Hada" (and doing all that entails) while she plots her escape?

And I agree completely about Susanlynn -- her students are very lucky people.

Anita:

"I was born before the Eisenhower Administration and I don't remember this song"

Well I guess I should have warned you that I did take some liberties with it. The song is "Mama Said" and The Shirelles made it famous:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L842mz-tNBQ

"You really enjoy skewering Maycucu, don't you?"

Aw, c'mon. She's irresistible. She's gone beyond a believable character and has become a, you should excuse the expression, talisman, of maldad. She has the special ability to bring out the worst in everyone.

Just wonderful NovelaMaven. I really enjoyed the recap. I also enjoyed the title, which got the song in my head. But I was born way after the era when it was popular.

I laughed so hard when Fully said Esteryuya. It's like he's been reading this blog. I seriously hope he won't be making any midnight trips to Maycucu's room. He still seemed pretty freaked that she looks like his daughter. Maybe he figures that if he sneaks into her room at night, it will be too dark for him to see her and get freaked.

She's definitely a one-woman wrecking crew. I could not believe she slapped Bea-- someone's mama. As spolied as Estercita was, she was actually polite to most people. Mayuya is just evil.

It sure didn't take Marina long to throw in the towel and want to leave that town. The look on Dam's face at the end cracked me up.

So, Ernesto would rather kill Hada than let her go back to her former life (and the man in her past). Yipes! Even after she remembers who she is, Ester is in for a scary ride.

Ah. Back from the nursing home where my friend suddenly turned to me and asked "Where is your walker?" I knew I needed a good rollicking recap to lift my spirits when I got home and you came through, NovelaMaven!

Of course I loved the moon quip, who didn't? But also

grotesque rictus he tries to pass of as a smile

maybe someone Hernanish (I think this is my favorite of all)

many years of training in the Estercita bootcamp

DamGentlemany, DamStraight

and bumptious Maycucu speaking the the plural (or even better the "royal we"!)

I'm always intrigued by the way jealousy is treated in these novelas. Seems to me in our Anglo-Saxon tradition, jealousy is seen as a weakness, an indication that someone is unsure, immature or otherwise showing signs of being less than adult. In these telenovelas it's always celebrated as something wonderful and an indication of True Love.

Well, fine with me, but in real life it does seem to lead to a lot of violence towards women.

Anyway, thanks for making me laugh NovelaMaven. You're an incredible wordsmith, a fine writer and your humor is unbeatable. Now WHERE IS MY WALKER?

Correction : I believe that in reality, Maycoocoochachoo has gotten too big for Estercita's britches. Knowing May as we do, I think that she probably confiscated Estercita's britches along with everything else that was Estercita's.

(((Judyb)))...Bless you for visiting your friend in the nursing home. I am curious...what was your answer to her question ?

I loved all the Novelamaven gems that you listed. "someone Hernanish" was great and gave me a little shiver. Meh. Dear Lord , protect us all from those who are Hernanish.

Gee, Katy and Novelamaven. Thanks for the kind words, but remember that I teach English as a Second Language to foreign adults so.....sometimes my sense of humor is lost on them. However, sharing laughter and fun actually seems to me to be universal . Last semester, I had a teen from Syria who was very funny. She used to tell me, "Mrs. ******, my job is to make you laugh every day"....and she did. I love my job and my students, so I am the lucky one.

Thanks, Vivi!
" I could not believe [Mayuya] slapped Bea-- someone's mama.

I couldn't either. I saw the arm raised and Bea appeared to recoil. I felt for sure she would escape, that maybe brawny José would rush in and save her. Honestly, I thought that was one of the most shocking moments in the story so far.

JudyB:
I have known for some time that you are a generous reader but you are also clearly a good and loyal friend. (And where IS your walker?)

Yes, the jealousy thing in telenovelas always reminds us of the cultural divide, doesn't it?

Susanlynn:
"Too big for Esthercita's britches!"
Hah. Too funny.

Now we know why the costumers/writers/director gave Estercita such a distinct look. Her hair, style, and eyes stood out for a reason. I love it when it looks like they have put some thought into these things. It looks like Esteryuya just went with green contacts for both eyes, instead of getting one green and one hazel though. This feature certainly adds to Hada's magical mystique for Ernesto.

Hell's bells, I don't know WHERE my walker is!

Actually my friend forgets hers often but the aides always makes us track it down. Unfortunately liability issues are such that a number of people I visit or have visited regularly are required to use them even though their legs and backs are perfectly sound.

My friend and I go outside and sit on a magical bench anytime the weather is nice enough (I will do anything to get her off that Alzheimer's lock-down floor with the nursing home smell) But something wonderful always happens on the magic bench. We meet someone new. Sometimes from out of town. They stay and chat and we hear all about their families, their hopes and dreams and my friend always hugs and kisses them good-bye. These days nobody's a stranger.

Or someone passes by who knew her husband or her back in the old glory days. Today it was a grown man who had lived next door to her when he and her children were young. HE WAS A SCAMP! she assured me and he headed off to his appointed rounds as a pharmaceutical rep. So it goes.

The sky was a deep rich blue, gorgeous fluffy white clouds. She had a full hour in glorious warm sun, breathing fresh air. And somehow I managed to get her back for lunch without "my walker". But one day.....

And I think Marina's "Let's blow this two horse town" comment is typical at this stage of the TN where the characters start making bizarre choices. Five minutes ago she was professing her undying commitment to Dam: We'll never be apart, together forever, nothing can separate us. Then her mom gets slapped and she's all "I can be packed in a half hour!".

Katy

JudyB:
What an exquisite piece of writing. [We could all do with a JudyB in our lives.]

Katy:

I wonder if Marina's decision to "blow this two horse town" will last through the first act of tonight's episode.

It would be so dull if our characters just made prudent decisions and then had to deal with the vicissitudes of real life (or the laughter of the gods). Then they would be like us, only much much prettier. [Sorry. I shouldn't have used the "royal we" in that last sentence. Clearly, I speak only for myself.]

NM: haha! Feel free to use "we"!

And ita! Luckily for DamAbandoned, Marina is easily distracted.

K

Now that Dam is DamFine (in all senses of the word), it's time for Marina and Co. to start investigating who tried to burn her up, and blow Dam up, and see if they are in any way connected with this attempt to run her out of town. We know Mayuya's campaign isn't connected, but wouldn't it be logical to think if someone tried to burn up the plant, with the manager in it; blow up the plant's star fisherman; and started sending notes tied to rocks crashing through windows and wrote graffiti telling the plant's manager to get out of town, that perhaps someone is trying to sabotage the plant? Not to mention the numerous pirate attacks. Marina should be going to the Federales (not the local popo), instead of running out of town.

Judyb...Thanks for sharing your afternoon with your friend with us here.. You are truly a good friend. One of my nieces is the social work director in a nursing home and one of my cousins is a chaplain in a nursing home. My mother was clear is a bell right up to when she died at 90, but when she went into a nursing home for rehabilitation after she had a stroke at 88, the mother of a friend whose home I spent a lot of time at when I was a teen was also there. After talking to her for a few minutes about how much time I had spent at her house, I realized that she had no memories of me or her past. She used to talk about going to the local fair a lot , and she also escaped the building as often as she could...perhaps on her way to that fair. ,very sad. She was older than my mother, but she outlived her. I believe that she was over 100 when she died.

Hub and my mother never got along very well. Just like Bea thinks Hernan is a better candidate for Marina , my mother thought another guy was a better choice for me than Hub. She discovered that she was wrong. when she was elderly and widowed , Hub took care of lots of things for her. He was funny with her. He once cut her hair when she was in the hospital and complained about her hair being too long , and he would roll up her pants legs when she walked with her walker.

I read a quote today that made me think of you dear Judyb..."Look for the good." I am trying to do that because life is short...I still know who I am...and I don't have to worry about where I left my walker at this point in time.

Thanks for the breakfast recap, NM! I sure enjoyed starting my day with laughs.

How old is Marina? Did her Mami have to ok the underwear she wears? Bea's snobby, arrogant and dysfunctional attitude towards Dam and Marina is emotional blackmail. Guess Marina will now learn to deal with unpleasant situations and challenges even if they include her (not)mother. These novelas use that theme quite a bit, saying that mother knows best, when clearly they are clueless. (Another one is that they interfere, manipulate and control because - they love them!) Anyway, it makes for good novela mocking.

Marea Primavera

There you go, Susanlynn. We know who we are, and for now, we don't need a walker. And I'm glad your mom found out what you always knew, that Hub was a keeper.

I don't blame those folks on the Alzheimer's units for trying to escape when they can. There are some saints working in those places and God bless them. But there are also people working there who shouldn't be and they're curt or patronizing or worse with the residents. Especially subs who come from agencies, work weekends and are often trying to handle two jobs plus horrific home lives. Everybody suffers.

Keep looking for the good, Susanlynn...for you and for all your family.

Marea Primavera:

So glad you enjoyed the recap.

About Beatriz -- I find the character inconsistent. Sometimes she seems like a lovely, generous woman, if a bit clueless; at others, she is an insufferable snob. Or maybe it's just that when she is frightened, she shows herself at her worst. (Which is actually pretty realistic, emotionally speaking.)

As you point out, the sillier a story line gets, the easier it is to mock. So I guess the Patio comes out ahead whichever way it goes.

:D

JudyB, your "Where's your walker" story really made me chuckle. It's also cute and sweet. What a wonderful friend you are to take the time to share sunshine with your friend. And I'm not just talking about the actual sun, as you well know.

Vivi, wasn't it Mayuya who tossed the rock through Marina's window? I got the feeling she did it or put someone up to it. But that's the way my memory goes, I want to blame everything on Esthercuya.

I was also astonished that she physically attacked Bea. And also astonished that Bea didn't immediately tell Marina and Damian who did it.

Novela Maven, the patio is now taking bets on if Marina will last through the first act, and that would be the first NEW act of tonight's episode. No monetary bets allowed, losers must give kudos to the winners. However if loser want to treat winners to a drink that's OK. By the same token winners may treat losers. As you hinted, the patio loves to come out ahead.

Also, thank you for that great song that has been running through my head all day long.

Sylvia- Yep. Mayuya was behind the rock. But with all these things together they should logically think they're connected and want to investigate.

I think DamPersuasive will be able to talk Marina down pretty quickly, for now.

Judy- I also loved your story. I hope my amigas will do the same for me one day when I have to use a walker.

Well, too bad we're not all the same age. We could all lodge at the same CarayCaray Retirement Home and have a blast causing havoc on the floor. Sometimes I miss those crazy dormitory days when we had the time to just hang out (okay, I wasn't doing as much studying as I should have).

Ain't nobody going nowhere, guys!

Bueno, pues. el patio invita! (Drinks are on the house!)

hehehehehehe
