Weekend Discussion: Most Annoying Characters

Many novelas have characters that just annoy us whether they were meant to or not. This could be because of poor acting, the character's bad timing, character stupidity, or just plain being out of place in the story. This character can be any age and of either sex.  These are characters we would never write into the story or wouldn't write the way they are appearing to us.

I'll start by nominating Almira of Qué Bonito Amor. Her inconsistent behavior in supporting and then slamming Maria's choices would be gaslighting behavior in a villana, but she never quite comes off as being intelligent enough to use this as a control tactic.  That made all of us want to slap her flat.

Mercedes of La Que No Podia Amar got on my last nerve for how she failed in compassion and fairness. She was supposed to be a nurse and those qualities are essential to the profession yet she consistently refused to exercise them with regard to the story's heroine, a nurse who graduated top of her class.

Most children in novelas annoy me, too. This, however, is usually about ones that are manipulative (especially by whining) and a little too smart for their own good. Too numerous to mention.

Who got on your nerves in the last few years?

Labels: , , ,

Comments:
Gustavo on LQNPA got on my last nerve. I didn't like the character, but I detested even more Jose Ron's bad acting. If Gustavo had remained the protagonist (as he was in the first two versions of this novela) I don't think I would have stuck it out until the end, nor would I have ranked LQNPA as one of my five all-time favorite novelas.

Guillo from "Amores Verdaderos" is the only telenovela kid I can think of who really wore on my nerves. It's bad enough that he wasn't a good actor, but combine that with a scene where he's whining/crying about something and that makes it worse. Also on my short list of most annoying are Esthercita from "La Tempestad" and Doris from "Corazon Indomable".

The character of Fernando Contreras in PESE is the most obnoxious for me. The actor Pablo Valentin did a wonderful job in representing a macho jerk. Because of his stellar performance of an exteme character and his long suffering wife Marisela who enabled and supported his bad behavior for much of the novela, I could not stand their entire subplot.
Loved PESE but it would have been better without the Contreras subplot.

Jarifa

Oh, and I forgot Malquiedes (sp?) and Xochitl from "Porque El Amor Manda". The Elvis neverbe was just plain annoying and childish and Xochitl squealed all the time like a three year-old needing to go to the potty.

Rodrigo from Un Refugio was the most annoying galan I had ever seen until Oblivio (Octavio) of Corazon Indomable. Those two are the most annoying, dense, wussy and idiotic and unlikable galanes I have ever seen. I'm still annoyed that Rodrigo and not Patricio ended up with Luci.

Duran family from the LQNPA is the most annoying ever.
Amalia from the QBA with her corazon de madre got the 3 place.
Alegria

Doris from CI. When she wanted to kill herself, I thought let the bitch die. It will make this novela better. Also Onelia from CCEA was rather aggravating until she defected. Hortensia from QE was grouchy but I warmed up to her. I also didn't like Claudia from HQEDNS and wanted her to suffer something. Also as I watch LFMB I wish Alicia would quit moaning Marcia so much.

Another vote for Rod from Refugio most annoying galan in years and considering how some of them are too stupid to live that says plenty.

QBA's Amelia possessive wishy washy and just irritating on every level. From the same show Curtis she makes all women look desperate and stupid. Her antics are supposed to be funny but they aren't.

Pancho from UFCS and now PEMA absolutely cringe enducing on every level. Why novela writers think that acting the fool is funny is totally beyond me.

Marichuy from Cuidado Con El Angel. Most annoying and worst protagonista ever. She was so darn stubborn and refused to forgive and forget. She was also a liar. She tried to keep her baby's father away from his son and acted like her baby only belonged to her. She caused a lot of suffering. She blamed the protagonist for everything that happened to her when she was the one to blame. First time ever that I hated a protagonista and wanted the male protagonist to end up with someone else.

Beatriz from La Tempestad is also very annoying. She needs shut up and let her daughter live her life.

The comic relief in Triunfo Del Amor( football scenes) was utterly annoying...

I don't remember her name, but in FELS the woman who rode the moped and auditioned all those male dancers. ALL her scenes were irritating and beyond stupid - even more than the novela as a whole.

Also the scenes with Mayita talking in that room behind the drawer in Cuidado del angel were cringe worthy.I was like what in the world did i just see?..

Another vote for Marichuy from CCEA.

Also the entire Mendoza clan from QBA, even Isa with her "nobody loves me" whining. Plus Jalisquito. Plus Mirna. Plus Mancia. Plus Amalia. Plus Wendy ... forget it, THE WHOLE CAST except Justo!!

Great topic UA!

So there is annoying as a character and annoying as in bad acting huh? Well, my particular winner that combines both those categories has to be Gabi Spanic as Ivana in STUD. I can't even....

As for just a character who annoyed, and probably shouldn't have, Candy in Las Tontas. I know it was meant that you were supposed to root for her, but I could just never quite get there. She just bugged me for some reason.

And yes, as child actors go, Guillo in Amores, bless his little heart, had to be one of the most annoying I've ever witnessed. I usually turned him off when he went on one of his whiny rants.

Umm let's see...

Gustavo from LQNPA has been one of my most hated characters ever... gah, his constant judgement of Ana Paula, his distrust and constant control of her made me despise him. Geez, he was supposed to be in love with her but he treated her worse than lint on his shoe sometimes. He always listened to others and believed them more than he believed her! And once she found true love with her husband, Rogelio, he was constantly coming in between them and causing greater problems between them than they already had with his constant hero complex that AP wanted none of.

Ana Paula in the last two weeks of LQNPA also set my nerves on fire. She had fought so hard to be with Rogelio, they had overcome such big obstacles and were finally happy then she finds out about the truck and suddenly can't forgive him????! I mean c'mon! she had forgiven him for much worse things already. That it just seemed silly for her not to be able to forgive this too. I'm not saying what Rogelio did was right, he was an idiot, but it's not like that sent Miguel to jail it was him running those two people over not the truck robbery. Then her being indecisive on forgiving Rogelio and stinging Gustavo along was just bad writing.

Thought of two more. Young David on La Patrona, whiny and ungrateful. When he grew up he was almost as bad but did redeem himself. The young one was a brat with a capital B.

Theresa Christina on Marido is really grating. I know she is a psycho but how Reinaldo has put up with her for so many years is beyond me.

UA, what a great topic.

There are several main characters who've managed to annoy me throughout the show but they were pretty much essential to the plot... in particular, Jerónimo in CME and Rogelio in . I managed to endure.

In Gancho there was a minor character that was so sweet and benign named Tano and for some reason I simply could not abide him. He was out of place.

I mainly was hoping to see one of my old favorites, Gardenia, from MEPS mentioned here... she attracted so much ire when the show was on... and yet, not a peep about her. How soon we forget.

UA, I know that you look in on CI from time to time, little Miguelito is a kid you could appreciate... all he does is sleep... well except for the time he fell down the stairs.

Carlos

I find the most annoying characters to be those who are constantly shouting, squeeking, or skrieking: Margarito and Dani in LQNPA and Teresa Christina in Marido en Alquilar.

UA, Great topic. Who can resist being invited to vent about annoying characters?! Here are two picks off the top of my head ....

Rosario in La Temp - painfully shrill and holier-than thou - Fully sure called her on her hypocrisy quite handily, thank you..

Ines in Santa D (Telemundo) - I know they suggest she has some reason to act infantile, but the character is over the top ditzy

Margarito, the kid in LQNPA - couldn't seem to modulate his voice to an "inside voice"

First of all, once again UA, you've come up with a fabulous topic. Thanks.

I'm going to join Decie Girl in voting Pancho the most annoying character and actor of all time.

The worst part was that we were SUPPOSED to like him. To find him humorous and endearing and lovable as all get-out.

Seven PM is my favorite time to watch telenovelas but that show, in spite of some wonderful minor characters, was UNBEARABLE.

For me.

Obviously it was a big hit and many of our bright and sensitive recappers and commenters enjoyed it. So..."individual differences" I guess.

I certainly agree about Doris in CI; her voice is like an ice pick to my eardrums. Her notion of her own superiority is completely out of line with her behavior, which is lower than any of Maricruz' ever was. She who has to boast of being superior most likely isn't.

Don't know if anyone here saw Mariana de la Noche, but the heroine's sister, Chachi, was so insane and screechy it was cringe-inducing. I stuck with that novela because it had great incidental music and my favorite leading man.

Victoria Ruffo in whatever she is in. I will try to avoid her in anything.
She is definitely La llorana.

I agree about Ines in Santa Diabla, Doris in CI, Quintina in FELS.
I might chg my mind about Inez when we find out what her problem is.

Hmmmmm!!!
Francisco de la Vega from Destilando Amor
Bea and Rosario from La Tempestad
Mallquaides from PEAM

Marino and his 15 kids at the end had me rolling! I was annoyed by how horny he was. And Enriqueta in STD and Enriqueta and Castillo in Velo de Novia. Enriqueta would often threaten and shout her lines every so often. And Odioette in AV as her homophobic self who was somewhat re-deemed. Don't get me started on Chamuco in Guapos along with Luciana and in Tontas, it annoyed me how Tio-Abuelo kept closeted and how Charly didn't accept him at first. Castillo (late) was a sadistic man who got off WAY too easy.

I haven't been watching tns consistently enough to have characters that annoy me, but some TN tropes do: the earthy, talkative friend-like Gabriel in Marido en Alquiler that says 'Pos' and rants all the time it seems so contrived. The only one who did this well was the actress who played Francisca in la Patrona. She was earthy and salt-of-the-earth, but not annoying.
Irene in la Patrona before she was redeemed. I was so annoyed by her judginess and lack of self-awareness that her problems with her hubby Alejandro were basically 90% her fault since she trapped him into marrying hernd help, knowing he didn't love her, and helped frame for murder the woman he was in love with.

I never understood the hatred for young David in la Patrona. he was being bullied a school about not having a dad, and the unconventional job his mother had, which is why he acted out at home. I liked him because as soon as he found out his mother conceived him via rape, he totally forgot about even dreaming about having a Dad and STONED his father when he tried to reach out to him. Also, the side-eye he gave Alejandro when he found out he was marrying Irene, and his refusal to go to the wedding by staying in his room in his pajamas redeemed young David to me since he showed his loyalty to his mother.

The Orange one in Abysmo, Mi Pecado, and AV (Sabine somebody) - that actress has some weird facial expressions that are like nails on a chalkboard to me. Her attempts at being sultry and seductive always make me laugh (and not in a good way). She is NOT sexy.

Also whatever character Roberto Palazuelos plays - they always annoy, and it's not just the writing. I think it's the actor - he is so not good looking, but always plays parts where he thinks he is. His pursed-mouth "threatening" looks are just ridiculous. I can do without him forever.

This is my contribution (Part I)

Whether a character or the actor is annoying is a personal opinion, but open to discussion. And many have we had as we comment on the episodes.

Here is my list of Annoying (A) and or Repulsive (R) Characters (not necessarily the villains who are important to the storyline). I haven’t reached back to ones watched on line or rebroadcast.

Sortilegio
Chucho (A), the old guy who saves Alex at the beginning and returns to annoy
Elena (R), MJ’s mother and Dr. Jorge (R), her husband
(Looking back, I can’t believe that our annoying Curtis in QBA was Merce in Sortilegio—a weak, moderately annoying, but important tertiary character)
Gabriel (A), Meche’s brother and the stand-in for the “corpse” that got up and ran away

En Nombre del Amor
German (R), creepy guy who slept with Romina (and did other things)
Aaron (A), the boy who kept chasing Paloma and tried to force himself on her

Mi Pecado
Justina Huerta (A&R), Rodolfo’s wife and village hussy
Josué Huerta (A), son of Rodolfo and Justina who tried out being a priest for awhile

Soy Tu Dueña
Leonor (A) José Miguel’s irritating mother
Tia Isabel (A), Valentina’s aunt
Enriqueta (aka Enshrieketta) (A), Sandi’s mother
Ivana (R), what a piece of work

La Verdad Oculta
No one, not even the little kids bothered me. Some were giving over-the-top performances, but not to the point of being annoying. Maybe I can put in a bad word for Marcos, Elsa’s brother who served time with Juan Jose Victoria Ocampo and Susana, Marcos’ girlfriend. The story could have been written without them.

Eva Luna
Tony (A&R), the Lollipop kid, junior delinquent—he just bounced around too much for me, even though he was redeemed in the end
Justa (A), the dueña of the pension—only because of her very wooden, old school (and I mean very old school acting) We all wished they had picked a more natural actress for the part.
Bruno (R) – Creepy scam artist who wooed rich, but deluded vieja, Marcela

Triunfo de Amor
Geez, who DIDN’T I find annoying?

Cuando Me Enamoro
We thought Matilde was a metiche and very annoying for about half of the tn. Then she turned nice and we liked her. I think Carlos and Mike were always on her side. We found her headbands (A) most annoying.
How about Andresito (A). Fortunately his storyline ended when he got the part in Eva Luna.
Priscilla (A), the wine expert
We didn’t like Dr. Nesme (R) or Dr. Sepulveda, but they were essential to the story and we weren’t supposed to like them—but they were not annoying.

El Talisman
Ditto comment from Triunfo….The whole Negrete and Nájera families and their extensions, but Elvira (A), Camila’s mother was the most annoying, metiche mother I’d seen so far, to the point of dangerous.
Panchito (A) was also annoying, but there were reasons why he felt so inadequate and had such low self-esteem.

Continued (Part II)

La Que No Podía Amar
Because I love this tn and just finished watching the chopped up DVD, I’ll stick to annoying.
We all were annoyed by Margarito (A). He never learned how to use his inside voice.
Interestingly, Macaria and Ulises (A & A) whole storyline was cut from the DVD (thank heaven) – and they didn’t even need to explain the hidden letter…it was just “found.”
I never learned the name of the actress who played Chio (aka Chio Pet) (A), but she was marginally annoying, mainly because there was little screen time or storyline we had to follow.
Mercedes (A) was an annoying character, but was a necessary element to separate Gus and Ana.
We (when I use “we” I’m including commenters) all agreed that Tia Rosaura (A) was over the top, as she never stopped her scheming, whining and complaining, even after Rogelio saw through her.
Last but not least, Cynthia’s exposed belly button wardrobe, worn most of the time in inappropriate circumstances was to me annoying, distracting and repulsive. (A,D&R)

Refugio Para un Amor
Ok, I’ll agree that Rodrigo was probably the weakest galán we’ve seen – up to Octavio, but not annoying. Even the little kids were good actors. The two metiches in the pueblo were annoying, but I think they were just filler.
Aldo (A) had his moments of being annoying, usually at the dinner table. But I enjoyed his being banished to the maintenance supply room as his office.

Amorcito Corazón
Sorry, Jorge Salinas, I found Isabel Cordero, interpreted by your wife, as the sorriest, silliest heroine who annoyed me to the point that I couldn’t watch when she was on screen. Sadly, one of my favorite actors, Diego Olivera, interpreting Fernando Lobo only a step behind as one of the sorriest, silliest, galans (much like Jesus Garcia in PEAM).
Oh, and remember Mauricio, aka Knuckles (A&R )? Repulsive and annoying, just for being in the tn at all and Marisol for falling for him.
Sarita (A), Isabel’s mother comes awfully close to being like Amalia (QBA) and Elvira (El Tal) but probably closest to Bea (LaT). Indeed, her preoccupation with wanting to keep Isabel virginal way into her 30s was silly, too.
Again, I did not recognize Rosita Pelayo as the demented live-in lover of Isabel’s father (now I see the downward trend toward starring as Dumber in QBA).

Amor Bravio
Agustina (A) heads my list in this tn, but she made the ultimate sacrifice, so I’ll give her a little slack.
Piedad, Luz’ mother, (A) annoyed me most of the time, but had to. Her insistence that Luz carry the result of incestuous rape to term made her repulsive, at least until she backed off and let Luz decide what to do.
Mariano (A) was annoying because he was like Coloso, how many times does a girl have to say I’m not into you for you to “get it.”
Tolentino was an unnecessary character. As was the kid (A) hiding out in the ruins. Viviana and Rafael could have adopted any child from that orphanage the padre ran. Ana, Mariano’s daughter, on the other hand, was not in the least annoying.

Amores Verdaderos
Espanto (A&R). Enough said.
Paula and Guillo (A & A)
Leo the Low (A&R)
Princess Lily annoyed me most of the time, but she was a key character. She was the reverse of Mariano and Coloso.
Rolando’s pompadour was MOST annoying.

Continued (Part III)

I have to agree with Variopinta who said anything with Victoria Ruffo in it is annoying in extremis. I saw her first in ENDA. It was one the first of the tns I watched and felt that most of the tears were justified, given how Carlota treated her. But then came TdA, and I got turned off the tears. When Corona de Lagrimas was announced with VR as the star, and Lagrimas in the title, I just knew we’d be drowning in tears. I skipped it.

Carmen Salinas’ acting annoys me. She plays the same waddling, suffering character in every one I’ve seen. I’ve been catching episodes of Entre el Amor y el Odio and there she is, too recognizable. At least Cesar Evora, Susana Gonzales, Fabian Robles, Luis Roberto Guzman, although physically recognizable, wear their characters as a second skin.

No one mentioned Dinero. There were a bunch of annoying characters, but the sister was the worst. I can’t even remember her name, but that whole family was c.r.a.y.z.e.e.

I had mentioned Dinero. Claudia irritated me to no end. I wanted all sorts of shit to happen to her. Sadly though, it would probably only end up like how Rogelio and Jessica got found out and nothing except a whole bunch of tears and I also disliked Marino.

Also, Jimenez's suegra and wife Elvira. I hated them to no end.

And at times, Emmanuel from Llena de Amor bugged me. I still wish he won major protagonist in 2011 but anytime he tried to take control of stuff I wanted Victorianela to cut him off. Also Fedra and her psychotic, locking-Gretel-in-a-dungeon-for-two-years-self! Llena de Amor is still one of my top 3 favorites.

Jessica in PEAM, followed by Discua

The Ariadne Diaz character in Llena de Amor.

UA
Thought of another subject for weekend discussions,

Memorable weddings

Santa Diabla had one tonight

Another would be parties

We've had some really good parties.

Love this topic!!

LQNPA: Cynthia of the belly-shirts and constant whining. I also have to agree with everyone else regarding MargaGRITO... that kid had ONE VOLUME only--11.

The orange lady in Abismo and Tontas (and many others). I can't bring myself to even look at her.

DYO: Margarita the Patron Saint of whining, simpering, and self-pity.

PASION PROHIBIDA: Neeeena (mute mute mute!!) and later Yair (when he wouldn't. stop. crying. ever.)

MARIDO: TC (another one I have to MUTE... that voice makes my ears bleed)

And these are just the ones I can think of right now...

How could I have forgotten #ShutUpDoris from CI??? She does have her funny moments, though, when she's not screaming like a banshee.

UA:

Thanks for this most wonderful weekend post. There are so many annoying characters.

For me the most annoying, over the top, screechy, yelling character and her whole family included, thanks Anita, was VIKKI, VIKKI, VIKKI from Dinero. Everytime she came on I had to mute the sound. It was like listening to nails on a chalkboard. Couldn't stand her.

Also Elviria from El Talisman. What a b*tch with her the "CHEQUE ES MIO" rant constantly. She basically sold her daughter and son down river. Couldn't stand the gas bag.

I've been watching "El Zorro, La Espada y La Rosa online and the most annoying one there is Hermana Suplicios. I know she is BSC but still!

I couldn't stand Chela from UFCS either, all the whining and crying until she started liking Enzzo. She got on my last nerve until then. Oh and speaking of which Temo drove us all nuts in that one too. We couldn't wait for him to fall down that well!

I got one last word. AEEEEDA!

but seriously, I DETEST Claudia.

We've done weddings several times. I would like at some point to do novelas de epoca as a photo essay. There haven't been any new ones lately, but there are at least a dozen classics.

Mancia of QBA got on my nerves big time until she finally woke up to reality. And as of last night the teens got uber annoying.

Corazon Salvaje, your whole namesake TN was awful, the last one that is.
I'll consider you named after the Eduardo Palomo version, which was wonderful.

But how could I forget Enriqueta in STuD, definitely mute button material, otherwise she made my teeth hurt. And I like the actress.

Thanks soooo much UA for your weekly topics. You are a creative and thoughtful treasure.
Yola

Corazon Salvaje--I re-read your entries and saw your reference to Dinero and Claudia. I didn't remember her (who did she play?), nor the initials of the tn. I just remembered Vikki Vikki Vikki (thank you Madelaine) and her family.

In any case, we've run through some wonderfully annoying characters and there are probably many more lurking behind the curtain.

I guess I have to say something about all the characters in QBA who are living and working in Los Angeles who either speak Spanish exclusively (including the LAPD) or speak English so poorly that you need the Spanish subtitles to figure out what they said. And don't get me started on the Italian phrases Giuliani (aka Orange Julius) throws around. It's all so annoying.

Urban, you NEVER disappoint us with your super weekend topics.

I have not seen too many TN, but I will start out with a general comment. The one device which I do not understand and the one I really despise, is the insertion of the so called comedic relief right in the middle of something "serious". The Curtis and Derecho characters in QBA are pathetic. There is nothing, absolutely nothing funny about their scenes. These are two bumbling fools who deserve NO story line. They have added nothing and are a major distraction and detraction from an already weak TN (aside from the wonderful music and locale).

Amalia in QBA is a smothering helicopter of a mother. The character becomes so annoying to me that I start to pick apart little things like her funny looking lips or some such. That she is looking to end up with the kind and generous Justo makes me fry especially since I doubt she will EVER acknowledge the harm she has done to her daughters with her over protective tendencies.

Urban, before I forget, who is "Almira" in QBA?

Agree with Anita wrt the Matilde character in CME. What in heaven's name was the purpose of those skull shrinking headbands?! I HATED THOSE HEADBANDS. She was like a snotty nosed kid.

As for kids, the ones in QBA can get lost. Their subplots are boring and uninteresting. Why are these kids even considered central to the plot?!

I've been watching the rerun of Soy Tu Duena off and on. The plasticized actress who plays the Ivana character drives me nuts! Honestly, I can't even get into the character because I find her obvious plastic work (I have no idea what this chick looked like before)so distracting! NOTHING about that actress' rear end looks real. Is is padded or is it plastic padded?

The other thing that I find distracting is why some of these obviously talented actors accept some of these roles and then allow themselves to be directed in such a fashion that diminishes or hides their talents.

The TN world is fascinating to me because of some of these questions. Maybe I will never find the answer, but I'll go ahead and ask anyway!! LOL!

Thanks, Urban!!

I finished the recap for Marido a while ago and discovered that I have a laundry list:

Teresa Cristina–the most annoying bar none. Is it the director who is making Maritza Rodriguez go from screeching banshee to chipmunk in the blink of an eye? Is she supposed to be comic relief? Well, it's not funny. It's annoying. I understand the the character is mentally ill but this one is waaaay over the top.

Gabriel–comes in a close second to TC. What a pushy, clingy, stalking character. If I were Griselda I would have nothing to do with him. In Thursday's episode he walks into Griselda's house when no one is home and goes upstairs to her bedroom. He lies on the bed sniffing her pj's. He's always sticking his nose into her business. She only wants to be friends but he can't take no for an answer. Blech!

Antonio–Griselda's son who has only one thing on his mind. Money. Lots of it. His wants and needs come before everyone else. He is an obnoxious SOB.

Quique–Griselda's hotheaded elder son. Hotheaded says it all.

Vanesa–Hostess at Gourmet Palmer Restaurant. Has the hots for the executive chef Reinaldo. Give it up already woman! he looks at you like a daughter.

If I went on I would name almost every character on the show. Strangely though, I do enjoy it. :-)

I enjoy Marido too although there are a lot of annoying and pointless characters.

Elisa on Abismo. I actually felt sorry for the poor actress who had to cry ALL the time and wear those hideous clothes.

Great comments and they keep bringing up others. Ruffo is the queen crier although she was pretty good in La Madrastra and she was hot with Cesar Evora however most annoying went to the Orange Gang of Four - Sabine Moussier who is always some tacky shade of orange, Rene Casados who does a wide range of things well but was awful in this one and Guillermo Garcia Cantu another talent who in this one ended up as a cross-dressing killer, can't remember the name of the fourth but they were all annoying.

Anything and everything with Michelle Vieth. I can't remember which one it was but she was nicknamed pig face by the commentators which gives you a clear idea of how loathed she was. Unattractive, bad actress, dreadful voice and her Spanish sounds terrible.

As much as I love QBA Jalisquito gets on my last nerve. The kid is a talented singer but the part makes him play sexually wise way beyond his years with suggestive comments and behavior. Mancia got me early on until she saw the light and after last night the four teens need to be shipped off to boarding school and kept off the screen.

I'm another one who hates the so called comedic relief that creeps into many TN's. QBA has the two fool bartenders, I seem to remember a pair in Tontos and a few others as well. It usually serves no purpose and just looks like filler. It may play OK in Mexico but the humor doesn't seem to translate well to American audiences.

This has been a great revelation and very entertaining. Thank you Urban for getting us started.

About Marido fans--I don't see Barbara or Max listed. I can't look at Barbara's pursed red lips for very long before I would rather watch repeatd of a Latino supermarket commercials.

Max, although he displays his shiny wet gorgeous bod frequently, I can only see him as creepy Bruno in Eva Luna and crazy Marcos/Martin in Corazon Apasionado. I actually feel sorry for him being married to Barbara. I'm annoyed because he's rarely in a scene without her (see above).

Fatima--If you are following STuD with the recaps and comments, you may experience some pain as you laugh at some of the comments. We (but not me) delighted in describing Ivana's perfectly round, outsized globes. When she ran, we were afraid there would be a serious wardrobe malfunction. Also, that her "girls" would always arrive at her destination first, before she did.

This was also around the time of the "poisoning" incident.

Fatima--Almira is a typo. UA means Amalia.

I first remember seeing Ruffo in Pobre nina rica and then in Vivo por Elena which I remember liking.

Awww you guys are mean, I like Michelle Vieth, is she still acting? On that note, what about Adamaris Lopez and Iran Castillo? I grew up with them!

And Gaby Spanic, jesus, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks she messed up her body, what did she do? She was a beautiful, beautiful girl and now not so much.....

Ok, heres my list of characters I can't stand:

Coloso, god why wont he shut up, by the 5th episode of QBA I wanted him to die, yes, die!

Derecho and Curtis from QBA to borrow a phrase from MTVs show Girl Code, "I can't", I just can't deal with these two idiots and don't get me started on Amalia and even Maria, and Wendy and oh hell the whole cast annoys me (but not Justo, I like him and Mike)

Agusto from Abismo, he really was too stupid to live, good thing he died. Elisa, oh my god, I have no words.

And Teresa, in umm Teresa, Boyer just bugs me.

Jimmy Bernal (Andres Maximo) on Relaciones Peligrosas. I hate to say this but the actor has the most annoying voice ever. It did not help that the character he played was so destetable. Also, Rodrigo from Relaciones Peligrosas annoyed me to no end on the first episode. Luckily, he threw himself from a balcony on the second episode and we were spared having to see him every night on the novela.

I like Michelle Vieth too. She is still acting - she's on Azteca now.

Azteca? I find it hard to keep up with telenovelas not shown on Univision, the only one I've ever seen on another network was LRDS and only because me beloved Kate Del Castillo was in it.

Anita and Eli, Ok, so I am NOT the only one to think that the Ivana character (what kind of name was Ivana for this character anyway?!) looked "odd" and "not real"!!

Anita, thanks for the heads up on checking out the comments when Soy Tu Duena ran earlier. Why in the world didn't I think of that?! I am going to look it up pronto!! :)) Thank you, too, for the typo info. I was wondering how in the heck I had missed that character.

It's funny, but I didn't stick with Abismo too long and for all of the reasons already mentioned: the father (Agosto?) with his goofy glasses; the nut job with the crazy eyes whom you all have identified as Sabine Moussier (a nut job and not such a good actress, either)and the Angelique Boyer chick. Oh my gosh! The constant crying and the pursed lips and the WACKO WARDROBE. Nopis. It was too much for this TN novice. (Insert "wink" emoticon here).

Fatima

Fatima, have you ever seen Gabriela Spanic in anything else? If not youtube her in "La Ursupadora", I think that's where she looked her best, I don't remember seeing her again until Soy tu duena and had a WTF moment when I saw her ummm boobs and bum, she just does not look natural and I wonder why she felt the need to go under the knife when she was lovely before.

Oh Abismo was just baaaaaaad, I realized how bad it was when I went back and saw Canaveral de pasiones, Daniela Castro killed it (she was the lead/Elisa character) and Juan Soler is a million times better than Zepeda *sigh*

Gabriela Spanic is far more believable as a villana than a protagonista; I was so glad she couldn't do Dona Barbara and the part went to Edith Gonzales.

I did find Ivana annoying, and with such a bad wig, too.

Angelica Maria (Amalia in QBA) is the Doris Day of Mexico. I don't think she has ever played an evil character and she has been a star since childhood.

Victoria Ruffo is the queen of lloronas and it's a shame that's all she does. She is still beautiful and I think she is capable of a performance that doesn't involve her tear ducts.

Escribió Anita:
"About Marido fans--I don't see Barbara or Max listed. I can't look at Barbara's pursed red lips for very long before I would rather watch repeatd of a Latino supermarket commercials."

I didn't have time before to list everyone.

Barbara has the worst voice and ITA re: her pursed lips. She wore pink lipstick the other day and it looked horrible.

JP and Ester. I hate the s/l and I agree with the person who compared it to "El Clon." So this has to include Alba and Beatriz.

Diosa adds nothing to the plot. So far she is just a sounding board for Paloma.

Marcela has had one good scene (when she warned Teresa Cristina that keeping Griselda out of her gated community could be interpreted as discrimination). I can't stand her pushy obnoxious personality.

I didn't like Rosario at first but he has grown on me. I still don't like the fact that they made him a "swishy" gay. That probably plays better in Brazil than it does in the US.

LOL! Anita about Latino supermarket commercials. I avoid them when I watch Marido because I usually watch it On Demand the next day except for Fri when I recap the show. I watch DYO live and I see cheap-looking ads for supermarkets, personal injury attorneys (there's a bilingual one I particularly hate and a really cornball one with a pair of married attorneys), auto dealerships, and furniture. These ads scream low-budget.

Eli, I will look for that Spanic TN you mention on You Tube. Will definitely check it out. Thanks so much!

Fatima

Fatima, you wont regret it, I thought she did a really good job with the part!

Ladies, what else has Gaby been in?

@Eli
She was also in La Intrusa with Arturo Peniche. Guillermo Garcia Cantu and Dominika Paleta starred as well.

I don't think I have a big attachement to novelas anymore to remember the characters that used to annoy me on them.

I do have actors that I can't stand for several reasons.

-Adela Noriega. She has played too many characters that I hated or was annoyed by and she just lacks character to me.

-Victoria Ruffo. I used to make fun of her as a child for Pobre Niña Rica, I think her crying was always ridiculous to me. The las decade she has spent it playing parts that were played in the past by much better actresses and that always annoys me.

William Levy. He can't ennunciate to save his life. I can't watch him at all.

José Ron. Only when he's the galán, I've liked him when he plays suppporting roles. When he plays a galán he always acts as if he's really angry all the time, and he's always worse in his angry scenes with the leading lady for some reason, it's as if he feels that makes him look more masculine or something.

Gabriel Soto. Also only as a galán, I like him in supporting roles. It's not that he annoys me much but there's usually someone in his telenovelas that feels like he would have been a better galán so that's what truly annoys me.

Jarocha

Jarocha, I agree about most of that. William Levy does nothing for me and his failure to enunciate properly is a prime reason. No actor has any excuse for that. And if the tattoos he has in the current series are real, he's also an idiot.

Jarocha- I like your list.

I don't mind annoying characters as long as that's what the writers intended, and it's a character that's actually part of the main storyline. That means the writers, director, and actor has done their job right. But if I'm supposed to like the character or agree with their thinking, or the character is superfluous, then I get truly annoyed.

Urban- No. The ratios aren't real.

Tablet decided to change tatoos to ratios. Go figure!

Ratios!! Vivi in DC, you had me laughing there!

Thank you for your list, Jarocha. I don't know a lot of these actors, but will look them up. Really appreciate your comments. :)

Fatima

UA and Vivi:

I haven't seen Levy's tattoos. I don't pay much attention to him to be honest because he also does nothing for me in the looks department and I'm tired of watching him everywhere with his tv commercials, scandals, etc. It's not his fault but I think Televisa has completely exhausted his image.

Jarocha

So agree with your list and Levy actually revolts me. He is a mush mouth, he is not going to age well, his head is too small for that overly buffed body, he is losing his hair (those extensions on LT are awful) and oh yeah he can't act. Obviously anything he is in is on my pass list. I just don't get his appeal at all- obviously.

I agree that nothing is worse than having a character who is supposed to be appealing or interesting and the actor annoys you so much you end up hating the character. Happens way too often.

Someone asked about Gaby Spanic and what has she been in — she really doesn't have much to show for the length of her career. I remember when she moved to Mexico probably for LU and how everyone bitched about her bad Mexican accent. If you are in it for the long hall she can be seen in Como Tu, Ninguna with Miguel De Leon. But let me warn you there are more than 250 episodes so it may be hard to find it on line. Believe it was done by Venevision.

Gaby Spanic's fake body and atrocious, not-sexy, fake-sounding little-girl voice kills everything she is in for me. Same with Ninel Conde, especially if she sings in the piece.

What a great topic and fun reading! I love all the suggestions and agree with so many.

I have to add that TC in Marido is, in novela-ese, el colmo. No other character on Marido comes close to her annoyance score for me.

As much as Gabriela Spanic's Ivana made Soy tu dueno nearly unwatchable for me, Ana Martin's motherly housekeeper was just as bad. I hated to see her thrown out the window as we got close to the end, but geez, the acting was so over the top.

Nice to "see" everyone!

Vivi, I like this topic!!!
Most of all I am truly annoyed by the Metiche mothers of tns. Most especially, Amalia of QBA, Agustina of AB, and what's her name, the mother of Marina,in La Tempestad. Why can't they have their children think for their own! They are so selfish that they procrastinate their children with their tears and overacting. They blackmail them emotionally. And not the least!!! La lagrimita of Corona de Lagrimas!!! I can't stand her endless crying. The boys are all grownup for goodness sake!!! Let them live their own!!! And to think that the actress won for her role in this drama.
I am not annoyed by the antagonistas. They make my blood boil!I despise them! But they do their jobs well.
Oh what about the protagonistas? Well I am really annoyed by Marichuy's stubborn and unforgiving character. Most of the time I hear myself talking to her in front of my tv and telling her "serve you right getting blind for being so blind".And the violence of some of the leading ladies such as Val of STUD,and of the Princess Liliana of AV. Irritating indeed!

Vivi:

I also don't mind annoying characters that are supposed to be annoying.

Sometimes you hate a character due to the writing or the acting. If the writing makes the character a jerk even though we are supposed to be rooting for him/her there's not much an actor could do to avoid annoying people, though a good actor can get at least part of the audience on his/her camp.

A bad actor can ruin a character less than bad writing but it does happen as well. A bad actor in a badly written role is just painful to watch.

Jarocha

OOps, I do not know why that word came out of my typing "Procrastinate" Hahaha. That's not a typo that is really a wrong word that came out of my fingers. I really meant "exasperate". PLease this is not a lay-lie error, I really don't know what happened. Pardon my blooper.

I'm so glad it isn't only me that William Levy does nothing for. I've never watched anything he's in, but he just annoys me. I saw an ad for La Tempestad in NYC right before it premiered and I LOLed so loudly at the extensions they had him in. I get his appeal, but those extensions were awful!

Mauricio-- I looked up Michelle Vieth and she doesn't look familiar. Her filmography lists MEPS. She plays someone called Irene Elizalde Rivera. I thought I knew all the Elizaldes. What relationship was she to Fernanda?

I was a bit surprised when I saw that it was Erika Buenfil that played Monserat, Nanda's mother. She wasn't on screen very long, so I didn't fixate on her too much. Same with TdA where she played Victoria Sandoval's side-kick. I would never have associated her with the Amores Verdaderos' Miss Vikki (and I liked her interpretation of that role).

I don't remember Michelle Vieth in MEPS either. She was very popular back in the late 90's for her teen roles but she had troubles adjusting to adult roles. Her voice is a problem, she sounds like a child. She went to Telemundo for a while and it's now in Azteca.

Jarocha

She was definitely not in MEPS. I just saw that listing in IMDB and it lists her as one of the Elizalde kids, but it also has a totally different cast list than the real one (other than Fabian Robles). Maybe it's an early "rumor" cast list?

Maybe it was a wish list. I've seen that some people like to "cast" the novelas with their favorite actors and actresses and then they add their names to the wikipedia and imdb pages of these shows.

Vieth will always have Mi Pequeña Traviesa, which was a huuuuge hit and some people who loved it are still nostalgic about her career. There was a remake still in talks called Niña de Mi Corazón and maybe that made some people remember her.

Jarocha

@Anita, Claudia was played by QBA's Elvira.

CorazonS--Thank you and I'll have to agree with you, even if I can't remember Claudia. Elvira is like an Ivana in training.
