Pobres ep 2, Tuesday Jan 07: Its a small world after all... and some new interesting characters make their entrance

Refrito: AnaSophy keeps her pitiful-me-song about her disastrous life, and her son trying to get her to be quiet for a record 10 seconds. She is so afraid she will be the laughing stock of several Mexican generations… (he suggests she choose from 2 solutions: bigger party or punish Frida with no funds… she likes that.. but she thinks sending Frida away to an European bording school is too easy (LOL!).. she will think of something… but meanwhile, how will she face the embarrassment she just endured. Have no choice. Give me the gun… (psych!, she wanted the blow dryer to dry her full fur coat)…

We get the ice cold reunion scene of Minerva and MA… and her sticky mommy, who can only see in terms of dollar bills.

Back to the colorful neighborhood party and Emiliano’s wish of meeting his dad. Lupita and her dad put a ‘oh crap!’ face when he says it.

Lo Nuevo:

Here comes (Arturo Peniche as) Nepomuceno (I will do him a favor and call him Nepo from here on), he arrived with his musicians to get the party started. Lupita is sad, Nepo comes to bring her some fruit (is he a green grocer/distributor?) and try to cheer her up. Fruit is not as pretty as you, but they are sweet as honey. Lupita not in mood, even with the band he brought to her son.Nepo is definitely interested in Lupita, and he does not skip a beat, he asks her out. She is very reluctant… just a movie or a drink… please don’t say no or I will squish like an avocado. Lupita leaves him with a pinch of hope, ‘maybe one of these days we can go out to dinner…’ That’s good enough for him. He happily goes back to animate the party. Wendy(?)(is this the aguas girl?) comes to scold Lupita for rejecting Nepo. For some reason Wendy wants to know the name of Emiliano’s dad. Lupita won’t tell her.

Next morning, Lupita and her dad again discuss the options about the gym, and even consider selling the house. He can tell Lupita is more worried about Emiliano wanting to meet his dad. She is thinking about it. Her dad says should not even consider it. Lupita never told Emiliano’s dad she was expecting. She remembers:

We see her on the day she got the positive pregnancy test results and was coming to the office to tell him, she found him (none other than Alejo) in the arms of a woman (none other than Minerva!)… Lupita got upset and left, he basically demanded that she not tell anyone about what she saw. She gets really upset, claims he had told her he loved her. Alejo says ‘I am a R-P, the next President of this corporation. You are just a receptionist. How can you even think there could be love between people of such different social ranks?’ She gathers some strength and backbone and says she does understand and will leave him something (he thought she wanted to give him a last kiss, but she actually gives him a knee in the sweet spot… YAY!!, you go Lupita!! WHOO!!! WHOO!!!)…

Back to present… Lupita tells her dad she thought Emiliano would never ask. Dad says ‘that man’ does not deserve a son like Emi. Lupita says it would only be fair they met. Dad asks her to be honest, do you still feel anything for that guy? Heck no!! but my son has the right to meet his dad. Dad insists maybe Emiliano will forget about it. Lupita hopes he is right.

At some offices (lawyer’s?) the reading of the grandpa will starts. (I am adding that Julie's recap cleared up why they are reading the 'will'. it is similar to what we had in Cafe and Destilando, where a piece of the will is read at a certain point... in this case when grandma no longer is mentally capable of remaining at the 'head' of the corporation. Thanks Julie!) Aureliano RP… He wants Alejo (oldest grandson) to take presidency of the company (Alejo smiles satisfied, thinking he retains control of the corporate… but to his dismay, the lawyer continues), ALONG with my other grandson MA. For a while, until one of my two oldest grandsons (Alejo or MA) have a legitimate son in a legal marriage. (WHOA!! What a bomb!! Alejo is visibly disgusted, biting his lip, MA totally shocked) Alejo asks what if that clause is not fulfilled? Lawyer says then the assets would need to be divided among the remaining heirs. Ana Sophy brags that MA (Miguel Anyelo) is about to get married so no sweat. MA not so sure, is actually offended at her statement and walks away. She follows him.

Out on the street somewhere, Emiliano insists to Lupita he wants to meet his dad. Lupita says it is complicated. Emiliano says he is now 9 years old and is old enough to understand their situation. Lupita says you are right, you are smart, grown up and my pride and joy. He walks to school, she is still very worried.

Back to the RP house, Ana Sophy wants MA to accept the inheritance, MA says he can stand on his own, no need for any of the family fortune. She insists he accept the title/position to make up for his long term absence. As he insists he has his own life and does not need any of that, she has a brief fainting spell.. ‘what have I done to deserve such lack of gratitude??’ MA asks her not to exaggerate. She insists he accept the position. Now that you will marry this girl ‘muchacha’… you can fulfill your grandpa’s wish. MA takes offense with that. That ‘muchacha’ is named Minerva. (and walks away)..

We see Alejo show his true colors, in his office at corporate, he grabs grandpa’s picture frame and smashes it on the wall. The secretary worries about him, he hates the will clauses of grandpa’s… She reminds him MA is not interested. Alejo says you are right. Secretary says noone can run this company like you can. Alejo says he wants all employees to know that he will always be the president of the corporation. Seems this secretary/assistant (as she calls herself) has a weak spot for Alejo… even though his mood/temper leaves MUCH MUCH to be desired (What do Lupita and this girl see in him??).

We go back to Lupita and her dad, they have such a great relationship. They keep talking about taking the house deed to the bank. He says banks loan you the umbrella when it is not raining and when it rains they won’t loan you anything. She says they have to open the fonda (like a cafeteria, Aha! SO she DOES plan to run a cooking business) as soon as they can.

MA is buying (or renting?) a car. Picks a white one,( I would have picked the red one, but oh well.) The salesman asks him if he would not prefer one with driver, MA says no thanks, and drives away.

Some women who are part of Ana Sophy’s social circle are gossiping about AS, one says one day AS will arrive riding an elephant (that is, if the elephant does not complain), she always wants to be in the spotlight. Just at that moment AS arrives, complete with her puppy love, via helicopter. She is very cocky asking the waiter for a dry martini. Kissy kissy..( have to say the rose shaped ruffles on her shirt are sort of cute.) She continues bragging, go ahead and talk about me all you want, as long as it is good things. The ladies tell her the designers are demanding pay for the coats your ‘nina’ (daughter) ruined.

Lupita and her dad come to some guy’s house who happens to own a pawn shop (Salomon Ladino OMG LOL!!), they want to pawn the gym equipment. He can’t give them much for it, but he can loan them money with a low low interest rate. And he will take the equipment as guarantee… ‘taza variable de ajuste inflacional’ (variable rate with inflation adjustment LOL!)_ instead of the usual 6% he will charge them 5.9%. Lupita does not skip a beat and huddles with her dad away, she is not convinced. He says lets do it, God will help us. They come back and accept the deal from Don Salomon. How much are we talking about? 20K? 60? 100K?

AS and the gossip ladies are also talking about the money, but seems AS expected them to hand over some money for the 'charity' but it turns out it is THEM asking AS for the money for the ruined coats and jewelry. AS says her daughter is a ‘rebel without a cause’. But she will think of an unprecedented punishment.

MA arrives to see his grandma. She recognizes ‘her favorite grandson’ immediately. She says she should be mad at him for having been away so long, even though grandpa had chosen him(MA) as the one to head the corporation. When grandpa died she wanted MA to have helped her with the corporation instead of Alejo. MA insists Alejo has done fine. Grandma says Grandpa wanted all the family fortune to end in MA’s name. MA says ‘he did that to try to keep me here. I am sorry I did not stay but I have made a name for myself on my own means and thanks to the values you all taught me I have got everything I want’. Grandma says she hopes he has learned his lesson.

AS is trying to feed puppy. Now she is sitting Poolside(?) with Frida, who is again asking for money. Frida is complaining that AS can only think of her poor animals but won’t take care of her. Leonardo also comes to ask for money. AS protests, go ask MA for money. I am your mama (in Italian), the one that gave you life… At least MA deposited some money for me, otherwise I would not have money either.

Back to MA and grandma. She hopes his successes have not turned him into an arrogant and cold man. She is sure he is good and noble. She begs him to stay and take over his grandpa’s patrimony. If you don’t do it for his memory, do it for me. MA asks her if she knows what is in the ‘clause’ of grandpa’s will. She doesn’t have a clue. But she does know that things in the corporate are not going well since your cousin took over the management. She tells MA both the corporate and the family need him more than he thinks. (she keeps having her mental gaps thinking grandpa will arrive home soon). She reminds him no success in life will make up for a failure at home.

Back at the house, Frida gets a phone call from her boyfriend. She is leaving. AS rants about her boyfriend being worthless … as you say… ‘equis’. AS comments that Frida made her push for 9 hrs when she gave birth to her. Frida says love you too, mom and leaves. AS looks at magazine and says the word ‘party’ and remembers Frida’s protest at her party. She gets on phone with the police commander. She asks him for a big favor. You need to be discrete because it is about my daughter Frida. I am sure she will commit some vandalizing felony. (this is going to hurt…)

At the corporate, some model is doing a photo shoot, Alejo is nothing short of drooling and popping his eyes out, while his secretary is putting faces like she is not liking his joy with the show. When the photo shoot finishes, Alejo, the photographer and Alejo’s assistant look at the pictures and Alejo is not happy at all. He wants more heat, more sensuality. The photographer says ‘more flesh!’ Alejo says ‘That’s right. Need to catch the attention of men, and also for women to realize what they can achieve with a good ‘look’.’ Photographer says why don’t we get MA’s opinion, since he is now also president of the corporate?. (hey, mr photographer, do you want to keep your job for more than 3 minutes? Shut up, you’re much too cute for unemployment) Alejo takes offense, turns to his ‘assistant’, tells her to send a memo to everyone to assure them that he is The ONE AND ONLY president. He leaves. The assistant makes faces at the photographer and says ‘you have so little tact/sense’ (or stte). Yes, she definitely has the ‘Alejo’ bug bad, not to talk about being totally blind to his ‘ways’.

Nepo is at Wendy’s hairstyle chair, Wendy is suggesting to Nepo to dye change his hair color. He is not liking the idea. She says you won’t try anything out of the box. No wonder you can’t make any progress with Lupita. She slips to him that Lupita and her dad plan to close the gym and open a restaurant. Nepo ‘impactado’ (he is alarmed, just had to use that word, been a while I used it).

AS is home, about to head to the horse racetrack. MA comes in, tells her that grandma told him that things are not going well at the corporate, asks her what’s up with that?. She says ‘no clue, why don’t you ask Alejo?’. MA learns she is about to leave, asks ‘are we not going to eat together?’ AS says that they never eat together. Everyone eats whenever they want. Then she tells MA: ‘If all the fortune of grandpa ends up in Alejo’s hands, you will have to sustain all of us (the family).’ MA asks does no one work around here? She says no. Besides, you left for a long time and cannot come back to give orders. MA says you should be proud that I made a life for my own with no help. AS says you should now think of us, and fulfill that darn clause of the will. In comes Leonardo the ‘artist’ as AS refers to him. AS and Leonardo leave and MA has again a confused ‘wth’ face.

Minerva and her mom are at the beauty parlor talking. Mama wants Minerva to find out about the mysterious clause of the will. Minerva does not think it will be easy to find out. (besides, she seems to be much more interested in some magazine she is looking at, specifically an article about some bull fighter , perhaps an ex- of hers?) Mama says stay away from Alejo ('lejos de Alejo' LOL!) and focus on MA. Minerva says everything MA has ‘good’ in bed, he has of ‘boring’ in everything else. Mama insists MA is handsome, rich and willing to please her. What else can you ask for?

Previews: engagement keeps going forward. Lupita comes to the corporate office to see Alejo. Seems Alejo (with or without meeting with her first) has her sent away. But she shows her dad’s genetics and next thing we see is she has the security guard on all fours on floor, she has a firm grip around his neck. MA comes out and seems to think she needs help. Shouts to the security guy to get his hands off her (LOL!)

Thanks, Martaivett, for keeping us rolling as we settle in with the two families.
I'm having fun so far with this lively comedy. Is Wendy played by the same actress who was the crazy high living spouse of Carlos de la Mota in PESE?

Thanks, Marta. Very thorough. I was only taking the sketchiest of notes last night and missed a lot.

Yes, Paloma, Wendy is Angelica from PESE. But this character seems a lot more grounded!!

Thank you very very much!I lost the TV battle last night. I really needed this.

So far I really like this.

Am I reading too much into the name Salomon Ladino? Seems a bit politically incorrect for a money lender. I really shouldnt project my US attitudes onto a Mexican TN should I....lol.

Sara, that is why I was LOL on the name, 'landino' sounds very snobish and in spanish it also sometimes implicates someone who betrays/deceives others for money or for something he/she wants. And that combined with the first name Salomon which should imply good fair judge/character, well, you get the drift...

Thanks so much for this great recap, Marta. Good to have you recapping again.

Sara- Yes. There is some inherent racism in the money lender's name.

Not a surprise that Alejo is the daddy, but it does set up an interesting situation, since Alejo and MA are in a race to get a wife and an heir. Alejo has an heir he doesn't know about, and MA is close to walking down the aisle. And of course, things will get more complicated once MA falls for Alejo's baby-mama, Lupita.

Looks like mom is going to drag cold fish MA kicking and screaming back into family matters. I sort of felt sorry for him . He was so happy away from them all in London.

I forgot to mention yesterday how much I enjoyed the scene where MA actually recoiled from the touch of Minerva at the table and then wiped the hand she had touched with his other as if she were contagious with something. His grimace in the midst of it all made me laugh harder.

Sara, you weren't the only one who did a double take on Salomon Ladino. I think your response says it all.

Wow, Minerva has quite the history with the family for quite some time.

Loved the dog. Wonder what it will be wearing today.

Martaivett, thanks for the recap!

Jarifa

Emiliano does not qualify as an heir. The will states that the man has to be married and the child must be "legitimate."

However, Emiliano's existence proves that both Alejo and Lupe are fertile. Since fertility is often an issue in TN storylines, that's useful information.

I am posting the cast (elenco) per telenovela-world.com on the synopsis blog.

Julie- All Alejo would have to do is marry Lupita and claim his paternal rights. I'm sure right now that there is no father listed on the birth certificate. Did the will say that one thing has to come before the other (marriage before child)? Heck, even MA could marry Lupita and claim the child as his and be put on the birth certificate. The kid is a Ruiz-Palacios, after all.

Jarifa, ITA with
Looks like mom is going to drag cold fish MA kicking and screaming back into family matters. I sort of felt sorry for him . He was so happy away from them all in London.

Julie, did you watch Cafe or Destilando? the male fertility issue was front and center there.

Vivi, love your new picture. ITA that Minerva must have quite a history with the family. No wonder AS just refers her to as 'esa muchacha'

and you gave me another reason to rewatch the first ep, the scene where she kisses his hand sounds rewatch worthy.

Anyone else find it a bit odd that in her last telenovela, Zuria's #2 galan was Brandon Peniche, and here her #2 galan is his father, Arturo Peniche? Arturo is a lucky man to still be paired with such young leading ladies, even if he's not galan #1 any more.

Marta- No, Wendy (the hairdresser) is not Carmelita (the aguas frescas lady). Wendy is younger and seems to be Lupita's buddy. Carmelita is older, and seems to have a thing for Don Chuy. The two actresses were in PVAA, and the younger actress' character stole the husband of the older character.

For an even more direct connection: the term "ladino" itself originally refers to the Jewish Spanish language of medieval Spain. When the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, it went with them.

Jarifa

Jarifa- Yep. Knowing the origin of the word ladino is precisely why pairing that first name with that last name makes it so obviously stereotypical.

The actor just came over from Mentir, where he played a slimy, lazy, good-for-nothing. He's looking much better here, but seems just as shady.

Thank you for the recap, Marta.
Jarifa, thank you for the insight into "Ladino."

I notice Grandma's memory loss seems rather selective. She was totally lucid when MA came to visit, up until he asked about the clause in the will, when she grayed out. Not saying it's intentional. Maybe when things turn uncomfortable, her mind takes a vacation. She was in la-la-land the entire time Alejo visited her - I don't blame her! In Eva, the mother's dementia also was tied to the painful things in life. Too bad dementia's not so simple in the real world.

In the interest of avoiding double recaps tonight... what's the plan? Does someone plan to post a summary, or should Julie simply put up a discussion post?

I have a discussion headers ready to auto-post at 11 tonight and tomorrow night;, but if anyone wants to do a recap for one or both nights, instead, just say the word and I'll cancel it/them.

I wasn't even planning to do a recap last night. I just went in there to edit the discussion header I had already scheduled to auto-post for that night; I was only going to add a title. Then I thought I'd add "a few notes." You know how that goes...

I think the dog's next outfit should be the pear robe.

Only if Mom wears a pear robe too!

Didn't realize it started yet and accidentally saw that it was on last night. Anyone know where I can see the first two in their entirety? Thanks

the first two chapters are posted on the uvideos site
http://videos.univision.com/novelas/que-pobres-tan-ricos

Thanks so much. :)

Thanks Marta! Like Sara, I lost the TV battle (Thanks Frontline!) so haven't had a chance to watch the episode yet, but your terrific and detailed recap makes me feel like I saw it. That said, no way am I going to miss all the funny antics so I will definitely have to catch it online later, after the construction crew finishes demolishing my bathroom.

Salomon Ladino? Oh my, I also had to do a double-take on that one. I remember very well Melinama's explanation of "ladino" when she was recapping Alborada.

Vivi I picked up on the Peniche connection too. Arturo hated being a galan so I think he really has fun with the wider variety of parts he gets now. Alas like his son he is doomed not to get Zuria.

I must say I am eageraly awaiting the come down of the haughty Riuzpalacios. The entire family is nothing but full of themselves snobs and that includes MA. I'm betting that this TN is going to go over very well in Mexico as it skewers the rich and points out their vapid useless lives.

That said I will add that Leo is one of the most annoying characters ever, Frieda is a brat, Mommy dives me crazy but I do love that dressed up dog.

As for our hero MA he at least has done something with his life and on his own unlike the others who don't even bother to work. I loved his reaction when he heard that. However his correcting the waiter in the first episode is rude and shows incredibly bad manners.

I'm thinking we now have all the ducks in a row and were ready to go with the story.

Loved seeing some familiar faces from PESE. I loved Marsela (Flaca!)and am interested to see her play a different role. Did anyone get flashbacks of Grupo Emperio when MA was picking out a car in front of that crazy orange building?

Love Jaime Camil and happy to see him again as the last thing I saw with him was Pulling Strings and Eva :) Can't wait for him and Lupita to meet!!!!

I too noticed he selected the car at that spot where they recorded LFMB as the entrance of Conceptos and where 'Fernando' would park his car (and noone else had the rights to that spot, go figure!)

Vivi and Decie, I agree. At this point i don't think Peniche cares that much whether he is the lead or ends up 'with the girl'.
I saw an interview of him and Mark T where they were both excited this novela was lighthearted and family oriented (although I don't think it gives the EXAMPLE of a functional family, at least on the RP side LOL) and also sent a social message loud and clear. So he might be in it for that more than anything else.

Good stuff. I don't know if I will stick with this one, but it has my attention at the moment.

Is it even legal to make such a condition in a will? In Cuna de Lobos the patriarch's will leaves his company to a grandchild that hasn't even been conceived yet, and that surely can't be legal.

Legal? What's it matter? Con dinero, baila el perro (with enough money you can do anything, even make a dog dance).
