Qué Pobres, Wednesday 1/15/14 (#8): There's Only One Italy... Plus the Other One.

A lavish Mexican-themed party is in progress at MA's family's home. AS is bien sloshed as she encourages her friends to take all her fine designer clothes. "I trust you to donate these to worthy charities," she says. Her friends figure they're pretty worthy.

Minerva and her mom gape at all the excess. Isela urges her daughter to beg MA's forgiveness.

At the Rome Colosseum (not that one, but the other one), the Plantain King tells Lupita he knows all about the family's troubles, and he wants to lend Lupita the money. He emphasizes that this would be only a loan - not a gift. Not charity. But Lupita is proud and says she and her family must solve this problem on their own. Anyway, it's a mistake to borrow from friends. So that's a Nope for Nepo.

Carmela and Wendy tease Lupita. They think she's charmed by Nepo... but she's actually thinking about MA.

AS tells MA that she's giving away her clothes (and maybe her jewelry, not sure if she went through with that) with the intent to buy all new stuff in Italy. Yes, she says, she already knows about the move, because she overheard the whole conversation. MA realizes what happened. He tries to explain that she didn't hear it quite right; "It's not THAT Italy," but she is too out of it to follow. "There's only one Italy!" she declares. She's blown the entire deposit he gave her on this party and "a few other expenses."

Outside in his car, Saul sees the po-po approach and calls MA to warn him. MA tells Mom to pack up only the most basic necessities and be ready to leave for a hotel tomorrow at 2.

In Other Italy, Lupita lectures the kids on the importance of education. So much for no lecturing on this show... but that wasn't so bad.

Back at the party, Ahole finds MA. Being the nice, concerned cousin that he is, he urges MA to turn himself in. He promises he'll do everything possible to get him out. MA doesn't have time to argue with Ahole, so he socks him and runs away!

In Other Italy, either Lupita's brother or Perla's boyfriend (I wasn't paying enough attention, sorry) is filling out an application for something... not sure if it was for a job or a school or a scholarship.

Minerva and her mom see the police looking for MA and go crazy. "I almost married a criminal!" My goodness, so many mood swings in such a short time!

MA dons a traditional deer headdress to hide amongst the folk dancers, and dances away to freedom. Ahole grinds his teeth in frustration.

MA wears the deer hat on a bus to the Colosseum. And at the Colosseum. Lupita is not amused. He couldn't make time for her this afternoon at the restaurant, so why should she listen to him now? She slams the door, which kinda knocks it out of whack and now it won't close properly.

MA takes another bus to the hotel, which is a little nicer than the one Jesús had in PEAM, but not as nice as anyplace his family has ever seen. He rents a room, where there's a big mirror over the bed. He sees himself in the deer hat and does a little dance.

Next day: Saturday morning.

Symmetrical scenes. AS is packing her stuff - well, directing others to pack it - and warns she'll dock their pay if they break anything. At the same time, Lupita and friends are unpacking stuff for the restaurant, and she warns she'll dock their pay if they break anything.

AS is amazingly energetic and loud for someone who's hung over so badly. She's taking the hair-of-the-dog remedy. Or not so much a hair as an entire coat. And I don't mean a chihuahua coat. More like a giant sheepdog. She clearly doesn't have a good grasp of "the most basic necessities" because she's including furniture. Shallow Leo begs to take his piano; it's an extension of his soul. (I imagine the piano cringing in despair.)

Although I'm failing to really capture it, the scene at the Menchacas' is still symmetrical. Shallow Perla is not interested in the restaurant activities. "Models need to sleep late." Lupita says no, models need to be active and fit. Besides, isn't she supposed to be working at Wendy's beauty parlor today? "What? Work on a Saturday??" Perla protests.

Leo tells Frida, "I won't miss this naco-infested country." Frida still thinks she's a woman of the people.

The Plantain King has written some love poems for Lupita. He tries them out on Wendy. (Is she his sister?) Wendy thinks those poems will have a great effect if he's trying to make Lupita feel like a salad. An Ode to Cauliflower is not going to win her heart. He needs inspiration!

Later... the restaurant is full of people. Unfortunately, they're all Menchacas and close friends of the Menchacas, waiting for customers. The Plantain King comes over and insists that they all come out to the fútbol game, where his son will be making his gran debut. Lupe is worried that a customer might show up, but this isn't a very convincing reason to bow out, and they get her to agree. They all get on the bus... Perla is late and rushes out. She lets the door swing shut behind her, but it's still screwy and bounces off the frame and gapes open. No one notices.

AS bids her home and domestic staff a tearful farewell. She has fully recovered from this morning's hangover, and working on a bigger and better one. So who says she never earned anything?

MA drives his family out to the fine establishment where he slept last night. They'll stay the night here, and then go somewhere else. Ooh, I'm wrong, AS still has the "headache" or maybe a migraine. She has pills for that. MA warns her not to mix them with alcohol. Too late! (Many Rx migraine pills contain narcotic pain killers and/or barbiturates or muscle relaxers; as well as acetaminophen, which can damage the liver when taken with alcohol. Sorry, that lecture was all me. I'm done now. I'm just wondering if she'll end up with cirrhosis and an expensive habit. What am I saying? She already has expensive habits. BTW, filet mignon is not good for dogs.)

The fútbol team is a bunch of 11-year-olds. But Nepo is as proud as anything to see his boy on the field. He also has a little surprise: A couple of guys on the field unfurl a big banner that says "Say Yes, Lupita!" Then they loose a zillion red mylar heart-shaped balloons and a ton of confetti. (So much for honoring his kid's debut!) Lupe says "Thank you" and "It's nice." She doesn't exactly say "yes" and did I miss a scene where he actually asked her to marry him? Or is he just asking her to accept the loan? (With red heart balloons and confetti?)

AS out of it again. MA asks his brother and sister how much is left of the Romagnoli and Florencia (?) fortunes. This is met with derisive snickering. Of course the big deposit he gave Mom a while back is all gone too. And now here comes the moving van... oh good, Mom rallies for another sip of her elixir. "It's time to go to the airport!" That must be some good stuff. I think she actually does know what's going on, but is trying to transform reality by taking magic potions.

MA was not expecting a moving van. They don't have anywhere to put the stuff. He asks if they can keep it in the warehouse. Nope, it's closed on Saturdays. He can rent a storage unit, but that will cost a lot more. He doesn't have a lot more. (He has trouble understanding them; they talk like the people in UFCS. Maybe they're from Toluca. Frida has to translate for MA.) What to do? He has an idea. He tells the movers to follow him in the car.

Mom's passed out now. MA is on the phone with Saul. Leo and Frida are finally starting to understand what is going on. They want to know everything! They have the right! MA reminds them he tried to tell them yesterday, but they were too busy to listen.

Finally they arrive at Italy Street. Mom wakes up and looks out the window. "Are we in Europe yet?" (Sure, Mom! We drove the whole way!) She spots the Colosseum; it doesn't look quite the same as in the pictures. "Wow, Berlusconi really left this place in ruins!" But she's thrilled that she didn't feel a thing on the entire flight.

MA is surprised to see the door wide open and nobody home. But he doesn't even have enough money to pay the movers to bring all of their stuff into the house; they're going to leave everything in the street, and the RPs will have to bring it all in themselves.

Next time:
While the RPs struggle to hoist a heavy piece of furniture to an upstairs window, the rope slips or breaks and nearly smashes Lupita, who is rescued by MA. This would be much funnier with Leo's piano, but I think it's just a coffee table.

Julie,

I hope you feel much better. I missed most of this, this evening.

I did see the part about the soccer game and Nepo's little declaration to Lupe, very cute.

Also saw the incredulous faces of the RP's when they finally realized, as they got to Via Italia (Calle Italia), that this was the Italia they were going to live in, priceless ; )

Will wait to comment more until you have your recap up.

Julie, thanks in advance and I hope you are feeling better soon.

I laughed a lot during this episode especially at:

MA in his deer headdress deer dancing his way into hiding.

AS asking for more elixir to cure her hangover and washing her meds down with even more.

MA looking for the seat belts on the bus.

Frida translating the local dialect of the movers for MA.

The movers leaving the Ruiz Palacios belongings in the street because they weren't paid enough to bring it inside.

DaVinci waving "goodbye".

Jarifa

Working on it now...

Get well soon! Thanks for posting a discussion space.

Get well, Julie. and don't worry, we will wait.
Have to agree with Jarifa's list on the best moments of the night, she even mentioned one or two I totally missed so I need to rewatch the bus ride... priceless!
the whole notion of MA having to take a bus anywhere... just wait until the rest of the RPs have to.

and I agree with Mads, the Nepo proposal and his puppy face were priceless too... I wonder how different they are in age...

Done. That was a fun episode.

Loved your "hair of the dog" musings and the warning against liver damage. Very funny!

Julie:

I hope you are feeling much better today.

I missed the whole party part. I will have to go find it online later cause I want to see MA dancing around in the traditional deer hat.

Frida, who knew, can translate "naco" into something that MA can understand. Leo is already starting to have a cow, and AS is self medicating. I'm not sure she understands for sure. Maybe once she kinda, sorta, sobers up. Now let's see if Frida, the woman of the people, can cope.

I laughed at her Berlusconi quote. He is the former Prime Minister of Italy, a very corrupt one at that. He is still standing trial in Italy for that. His PM position was like years ago. He is the owner of all the major telecommunications in Italy, including all major TV networks. Trials for corruption over there take years and years. He was sentenced in the one trial but hasn't served any time yet. He's still fighting the charges.

Can't wait until the Menchacas come home and see who has moved in ; )

Berlusconi's last term as PM was just two or three years ago, right?

Oooh, holy crap, Google says he served three non-consecutive terms as PM. How does that happen? No, don't answer that!

Also it says he's kinda short. Well, AS isn't likely to meet him anyway.

I can't believe that my "short" Pobres recap is longer than most of my PEAM recaps. Well, yes I can. Even when the plot isn't doing much, there's so much fun stuff and ad-libbed "business" that it pains me terribly not to be able to capture every single bit of cuteness. But I must. So I didn't mention how MA also asked the bus driver if there were assigned seats, or any of a zillion other things that made me laugh.

Julie- I'm so glad you're feeling better. Thanks so much for getting us a recap.

I can clear up the whole education discussion and the young guy visiting the Menchacas. I can't remember what his name is, wasn't paying enough attention. But he's a young guy from the hood that they grew up with, who made good, got a scholarship to college, and just got his law degree. They want his help in negotiating with MA and fighting him in court if need be. What he was writing down was the info about the case Lupita was sharing with him. Tezoc is kind of jealous/scornful of all the praise being heaped on this guy for raising himself up by his bootstraps, and Lupita pointed out that he should/could have done the same thing-- worked hard, gotten a scholarship, and gone to college. When the guy came over, it was obvious that he's sweet on Perla, but she hardly gave him a second glance.

This was a really funny episode-- from Nepo's fruit and veg filled poetry, to MA's deer dance and hat, to AS's determination to keep herself inebriated. I think Nepo is asking Lupita to accept being his girlfriend/dating, not to marry him.

Thanks, Vivi. That whole scene went over my head while I was having my... issues. I'm much better now. :-)

Poor Nepo. "Thank you" and "it's nice" didn't sound very encouraging, but she was also smiling at him. I imagine he'll ignore the lack of "yes," and pin all of his hopes on that smile instead. I wonder if this love triangle will be like the rivalry between Chela and Rebeca in UFCS. I hope Nepo doesn't have a shrill voice. ;-)

Julie, hope you feel better and thanks for enduring and giving us a great recap.

MA in the deer headdress was one of the funniest things ever. Loved how he continued to dance at the hotel--it seemed to inspire him with some of the family's artistic spirit.

The bus scene was good, too. What would any of us think if an upperclass guy wearing a deer headdress boarded our bus? And had to ask a million questions before he'd take a seat? There was also the odd closeup of the deer's eyes, as though the headdress were another character.

Another tiny moment when they arrived at "Italia." Mom handed Da Vinci over to MA and he's walking along the sidewalk with the dog attached to his hand, yet ignoring it. (Sorry, shouldn't call the little canine gentleman it.)

A burning question just sprang to mind:

Did AS pack up all her booze? If not, does that mean all she has is what's in her flask? Is it a magical flask that doesn't need refills? Or will she be gettin' The DTs soon?

Good question about the booze. I bet she didn't, thinking she could get all that Asti Spumanti, Limoncella, Camparis, Amaretto in Italy when she got there. I bet she'll get addicted to mezcal pretty quickly ; )

I laugh every time I see how low Leo's shirts are (un)buttoned, and he has such a skinny chest too.

Julie, absolutely outstanding job!!
my favs...
My goodness, so many mood swings in such a short time!
She clearly doesn't have a good grasp of "the most basic necessities" because she's including furniture. Shallow Leo begs to take his piano; it's an extension of his soul. (I imagine the piano cringing in despair.) [ she even takes area rugs!! Goodness!! She calls that ‘basic neccessities’? the house is pretty bare already!!... and the fate of Leo’s piano is shown briefly in the previews]\
She has fully recovered from this morning's hangover, and working on a bigger and better one. So who says she never earned anything?
When the RP arrive at the hotel, AS looks at the restaurant name and counts the stars and complains (while wabbling her alcoholic soul) that it is not good enough, not enough stars (how many restaurants do we know that show the ‘rating’ stars around the name sign?? )
"It's time to go to the airport!" That must be some good stuff. I think she actually does know what's going on, but is trying to transform reality by taking magic potions.
Mom wakes up and looks out the window. "Are we in Europe yet?" (Sure, Mom! We drove the whole way!) She spots the Colosseum; it doesn't look quite the same as in the pictures. "Wow, Berlusconi really left this place in ruins!" But she's thrilled that she didn't feel a thing on the entire flight.[have to say that Dona Sylvia P showed her comedy chops here BIG TIME!]

btw, that WAS the piano on the ropes...

MA asked the bus driver if the seats were assigned... LOL!! yeah i caught that one too, and you are right, there are so many funny moments here that if you blink you miss that it makes me love this show.
the 'naco' talk and Frida translating for MA was great too.

vivi said:

I agree. it was a request to 'be his girl'.
btw, the banner said 'say yes ALREADY, Lupita!' since he has been asking for quite a while, everyone around him are waiting for it too, which puts more pressure on Lupita.

Comments made me laugh as much as the episode. Such priceless bits. I'm surprised Min doesn't have whiplash from all her switching around. So she is relieved that she almost married a criminal, who isn't, and will probably marry one who is. Priceless.

What with Nepo's love of futbol I'm surprised that Berlusconi's name didn't come up there as well since he owns or owned one of the big italian team Inter-Milano if I'm not mistaken.

AS kept hectoring those poor servants about not breaking any of her stuff including the piece that belonged to Maximiliano and Carlotta. Then the long pretentious farewell. I'm thinking if she didn't pack her gigantic hooch supply the servants probably broke it out and had a good riddance party of their own.

The deer dance in the hotel absolutely hysterical along with looking for a seat belt on the bus Cannot wait to see what happens when Leo and Frieda have to hop the bus or worse the Metro. Leo will probably become catatonic before the stay in Other IItalia is over.

MA tried so hard to explain what is happening to looped out Mama and two twit sibs. He should have rounded them all up and told them to STFU and listen but he is so namby pamby he never got it out. I guess showing up in the barrio might make them pay attention.

Can't wait for tonight.

Paloma,
Mom handed Da Vinci over to MA
you're right, that was a great moment too, i focused on his face and body language and he was like 'What?? with all the strees I have right about now, do I really have to hold this thing??'

Mads,
I bet she'll get addicted to mezcal pretty quickly
ROFLOL!

Decie,
great comment:
I'm surprised Min doesn't have whiplash from all her switching around. So she is relieved that she almost married a criminal, who isn't, and will probably marry one who is. Priceless.

LOL! so true!

Fantastic recap Julie!

The Berlusconi joke was great, Silvia Pasquel was fantastic.

DaVinci is still my favorite.

My biggest gut reaction to this show so far came when MA got on the microbus and asked for the price of the ticket, was told by the driver it was 5 pesos and then he gave him a 200 peso bill and told him to keep the change. UGH. He can throw away money just as well as his sibilings.

DecieGirl:

"What with Nepo's love of futbol I'm surprised that Berlusconi's name didn't come up there as well since he owns or owned one of the big italian team Inter-Milano if I'm not mistaken."

Nepo's love of futbol showed with the name of his son Diego Armando (as in Diego Armando Maradonna).

Jarocha

Jarocha:

I had forgotten about Berlusconi owning a soccer team and I too think it was Milan. The Italians have a belief that every thing that is chi chi comes from Milan ; )

Thank you for the recap, Julie.

I loved your line, "I think she actually does know what's going on, but is trying to transform reality by taking magic potions."

I'll be a tad contrary about Minerva. Mama is the one happily ping-ponging back and forth to whoever shows the biggest wallet. But Minerva's reaction to being pushed to dump MA was like, "Aw, gee, do I have to? I really, really like him." And her reaction to accepting Alejo was like, "Aw, gee, do I have to? He's really, really icky." She'll follow the direction her mom shoves her, but I think she has a real soft spot for MA.

Madelaine:

Milan is a very popular team but since Nepo is a fan of Maradonna I bet he prefers Napoli, as that was the team Maradonna played for during the 80's.

Jarocha

Leo probably doesn't even know how to button a shirt.

So that really was a piano? I honestly couldn't tell. In my defense, I don't often see them at that angle!

I couldn't make out the denomination of the bill MA gave the bus driver, but I could tell it was way too much. I don't think he intended to be extravagant or wasteful, though. He let the driver keep the change only because the driver didn't look as though he'd be able to make change in a hurry, and MA was getting self-conscious because he knew he was delaying the bus. (I don't know if it occurred to him that the other passengers might also be staring at him because of his extra head and antlers.)

I also tend to think that Minerva was favoring MA and not very interested in Ahole, money or no money. She probably doesn't want to think of herself as a gold-digger - but neither can she consider the alternative.

As for Silvia Pasquel, I am thrilled with her and the rest of this cast, especially on the RP side. (Not that I'm unhappy with the Menchacas, but I was more worried about the comedy, and the RPs are taking good care of that.) I'd never seen most of these actors before, or barely seen them, and wasn't sure what to expect - so I didn't want to get my hopes up. But they are fantastic.

(OK, I knew Ingrid from before, but not in a comedy. She has been a real surprise! I keep imagining what PEAM would have been like with her instead of Blanca, but that's like imagining broccoli made out of bacon.)

Oops I was wrong it wasn't Inter-Milan it is AC Milan. Gotta to keep those things straight. I;m guessing that Nepo was a Maradona fan when he was a kid hence naming his son after his idol. Today he might have chosen to name him Lionel after the fabulous Messi.

I do feel somewhat sorry for Nepo as he hasn't got a chance in hell against MA.

Thanks Julie, I really am enjoying this show and this recap is excellent. My favorite line:

"MA dons a traditional deer headdress to hide amongst the folk dancers..."

Tradition abounds in this TN, a favorite of mine is the traditional paper umbrella which often adorns Mom's Martini.

Carlos

LOL, Carlos. I'm surprised she doesn't have a little umbrella painted on her flask. It seems so uncouth for her to drink out of something that doesn't have an umbrella on it somewhere!

And the deer head reminded me so much of Rudolph that I had to restrain myself from mentioning it, even though I knew it wasn't even a reindeer. Call me a racist, but all deer look alike to me.

I think MA didn't realize he was still wearing the dear headdress, until he got to the "Hourly Rates" motel. He looked in the mirror and was surprised to see it, so that prompted the deer dance. He didn't understand why Lupita looked at him so strangely at her doorstep because he didn't realize he was deer-headed.

I can't even stand the sensation of wearing a baseball cap, but perhaps those deer hats are more comfortable. :-)

I too think he forgot he had the deer head on even when it bumped the top of the door jamb when he got to his posh two star hotel. I'm actually surprised no one on the bus mentioned it. Still makes me laugh when I think about it.

so sad. our dear Professor from Gilligan's Island has passed. RIP. I will always see him as the original McGyver, having to do wonders with coconuts and palm trees. I learned english watching that show and Price is Right.

Julie:

I noticed the color of the bill, it was green. You can tell the denomination by the color: 20 pesos - blue, 50 pesos - pink, 100 pesos - red and Yellow, 200 pesos - green, 500 pesos - reddish brown and 1000 pesos - violet.

I think what really got me about that scene was the fact that MA new about his economical situation already and he should be doing everything he can to save the money he has on him. Giving 195 pesos to a bus driver is certainly less wasteful than spending thousands in a casino but when things get tough he'll definitely miss those extra pesos.

Jarocha

that's right Jarocha, and he handed the rest of his cash to the movers so he (and all the RPs) are now pennyless...

Marta - noooOOOOOOOoooo!!!! Thanks for telling me about Russell Johnson. I'd rather hear it from you than on the late news. The Professor is one of my favorite characters of all time. Tonight I'll treat myself to some coconut cream pie in his honor. :-(

I'm so excited that the RPs are already on Italia St. Worlds will collide!!
