Qué Pobres, Weds 3/5/14 (#42): Team Recap!!!

I wasn't able to post a recap. As consolation, I offered this unrelated but very spectacular recipe for carnitas.

Our wonderful readers/commenters posted all the bits and pieces, and I was able to add a few more things after watching the first half of the episode this morning. Here is what we came up with:

Madelaine:
Mati refuses to go to the doctor even though MA tells her its best for her. Frida sides with Granny so Mati doesn't go to the doctor.

Madelaine, Anon, Martaivett, Jarifa, and Julie:
MA and Saul go to that construction company and meet another guy that has been doing some research on the deceased Mr. Trejo's old accounts.

The adviser told MA and Saul that the place in the Nopalera was NOT worth a million dollars, but there is a fideicomiso (trust fund) of a million dollars (not pesos) for the OWNER of the property when he finishes paying it off. MA wants to get hold of documents that prove he is the owner by having Granny Mati deed the place over to him, thus cutting off the Menchacas - which Saul is telling him is wrong and unethical (just like Alejo).

The lawyer/notary clearly said the property would belong to the 'owner' once he finished paying for it so it clearly is pointing to Don Chuy.

ALSO: He says that there are two halves of the trust fund document. He's got one half, and the owner of the property will have to present the other half along with the property deed in order to claim it.

There is ALSO a "clause," but he can't tell them about that until they bring the deed AND the other half of the trust document (and maybe something more, I dunno).

Saul tells MA that if he were going to pull a fast one on the Menchacas he would be just like his cousin Alejo; it would not be ethical; it would result in legal problems and he (Saul) would not help him.

Madelaine and Anon:
MA calls Adolfo ( I don't know how he got the number) and tries to make a deal with him to out Ahole for the fraud. MA tells Adolfo that he knows that Adolfo and Ahole set up this fraud for MA to take the fall for it. Adolfo wants some money and he'll provide some proof.

When MA told Adolfo he would give him $30,000 (to start) for helping him clear his name and get the goods on Alejo, Saul asked him where he was going to get the money and MA blithely said, "we could sell your car" and then immediately dissed him by saying "though we may not get much for the old wreck (carcacha)."

Madelaine:
Later Adolfo calls Ahole but Mini gets the phone and assures Adolfo she knows all about everything with Ahole and to tell her it's fine. Ahole sees her do this and is curious who she is talking to.

Madelaine and Julie:
Ahole and the board of directors meet again and they aren't happy with him. They are not giving him the presidency until that baby is born.

They want to make a public announcement that they've identified MA and Adolfo as the parties who commited the fraud, to help clean up the company's image. (This is something Ahole wanted to do last week when Adolfo was implicated, and Vilma thought it was a bad idea. Ahole dissed her opinion; but after an angry phone call from Bambi, Ahole decided NOT to make the announcement after all.) Now Ahole is saying no, no, we can't talk about the fraud yet. We'll lose money. I'll wait until the moment is right and then I'll make the announcement myself.

Ahole thinks they are like zombies and can't wait for the bebe to be born. Vilma has to feed him antacid. She dabs it off his lip with a handkerchief.

Adolfo calls and plays a recording of a conversation he had with Ahole about framing MA. He tells Ahole "this is just a small fragment of what I have." He wants his money. Ahole says, "I'll have my assistant pay you the day after tomorrow." Adolfo warns that if this is a trap or a cheat, Ahole will regret it.

Vilma warns that they shouldn't use company funds to pay Adolfo off. Better Ahole dip into his personal accounts for this. Ahole angrily tells Vilma to just do what he says.

Madelaine:
MA and Saul have yet another argument about ripping off the Menchacas. Saul can't believe he is still intent on doing it. Something else was discussed, about proving his innocence but Saul is really mad at MA.

Nepo is sweet talking Lupe again, with Guendy as his wing woman, and Lupe agrees to go to dinner with him.

MA is still working at Nepo's market and can barely lift a box. MA also asked for time off to take Granny to the doctor, Nepo wasn't going to grant that, but Lupe talked him into it.

Guendy is still mooning over My Name Is Mike. She thinks she can snag him.

Chiliquiles has the hots for Carmelita. Don Chuy tells him that she is like his sister, don't be dragging her heart around, kinda sorta. She's free and single he tells him.

Julie:
Also Chilaquiles wants to have his godson's wedding (?) at the fonda for a fee. Extra money for the Menchacas, woohoo! He flirts with Carmelita and she seems to enjoy the attention, but Chuy doesn't seem to approve.

Jarifa:
Nepo's son Diego came looking for Leonardo which ended with some interesting looks between Lupita and Carmelita.

The maternity books Isela brought Minerva gave her goosebumps and would make her have nightmares of children like "Chucky."

One more funny moment: the mystery of the pay phone!

Madelaine:
Maca and Leo are getting married soon. Leo and AS want the wedding in Spain, at one of Maca's family castles, but that's a no go. Maca wants to be married in Mexico, with a beach setting I think. She calls her parents on her cell, we don't get to hear, and Leo is panicking cause Maca wants to invite all types of royalty from all over Europe and where are Leo and AS going to come up with the money for that? AS says the parents pay for the wedding and she'll figure out a way to pay for the honeymoon. Now Leo is really scared cause he doesn't want to be taking a bus all over Europe for the honeymoon.

AS asks the waiter for more champagne, but he has news for her. She's cut off until she pays the hotel bill. Cara de impactada de AS!

Julie,

I am so sorry you are feeling badly with the migraine. I hope you are feeling better soon. I will put some highlights in the comments.

Mati refuses to go to the doctor even though MA tells her its best for her. Frida sides with Granny so Mati doesn't go to the doctor.

MA and Saul go to that construction company and meet another guy that has been doing some research. He tells MA (As Saul) the value of that place might be a bit more or less a million dollars.

MA calls Adolfo ( I don't know how he got the number) and tries to make a deal with him to out Ahole for the fraud. MA tells Adolfo that he knows that Adolfo and Ahole set up this fraud for MA to take the fall for it. I think Adolfo wants some money and he'll provide some proof.

Later Adolfo calls Ahole but Mini gets the phone and assures Adolfo she knows all about everything with Ahole and to tell her it's fine. Ahole sees her do this and is curious who she is talking to.

Ahole and the board of directors meet again and they aren't happy with him. They are not giving him the presidency until that baby is born and also something about MA's fraud went public, but not Adolfo's part in it, I think. Ahole thinks they are like zombies and can't wait for the bebe to be born. Vilma has to feed him antacid.

That's all I can remember.

Oh, I forgot about Maca and Leo. They are getting married soon.

Julie, I hope you are feeling better soon. Madelaine thanks for putting up your highlights and comments . . I will just say recap because that is what it is. :)

Loved the schtick with the hard of hearing advisor. I also loved Saul telling MA that if he were going to pull a fast one on the Menchacas he would be just like his cousin Alejo; it would not be ethical; it would result in legal problems and he (Saul) would not help him.

"Y, ole". Looks like things are not turning out the way AS and Leonardo were planning with the countess. No way are they going to Europe on her dime. Now it is her forever dream of a Pacific Ocean beach wedding. The wedding plans seem to be a well choreographed dance of avoidance--of having to pay for them. Now that the hotel has said "no more champagne for you", what will AS do? Most important, what will happen to Da Vinci? We haven't seen him in a while. Where will this all end?

Nepo's son Diego came looking for Leonardo which ended with some interesting looks between Lupita and Carmelita.

So the maternity books Isela brought Minerva gave her goosebumps and would make her have nightmares of children like "Chucky." Minerva and Isela never fail to deliver.

The "good morning" kiss on the cheek between Nepo and Lupita was so hard to watch. She needs to clearly cut him loose. She is moving way too slow and needs to not blame MA for being of a different class or writing him off because she was Alejo's "woman" .(because we all know where this is headed)

One more funny moment: the mystery of the pay phone!

Jarifa

The adviser told MA and Saul that the place in the Nopalera was NOT worth a million dollars, but there is a fideicomiso (trust fund) of a million dollars (not pesos) for the OWNER of the property when he finishes paying it off. MA wants to get hold of documents that prove he is the owner by having Granny Mati deed the place over to him, thus cutting off the Menchacas - which Saul is telling him is wrong and unethical (just like Alejo).

MA is being a real jerk both to the Menchacas and to Saul. When he told Adolfo he would give him $30,000 (to start) for helping him clear his name and get the goods on Alejo, Saul asked him where he was going to get the money and MA blithely said, "we could sell your car" and then immediately dissed him by saying "though we may not get much for the old wreck (carcacha)." He is so nasty and unlikeable - UGH!

Get well Julie! and thanks for summing it up so nicely, Mads!
I agree with anonymous, MA is being rude and just plain nasty to both the Menchacas and even his mother for dragging her into his plans for ripping off the Menchacas. I am beginning to feel he does not deserve Lupe or Saul or ny Menchacas to be his friends at all. MA deserves to stay in the misery he is in (in his own view) forever.

Also agree with anonymous clarification of the 'fideicomiso'. the lawyer/notary clearly said the property would belong to the 'owner' once he finished paying for it so it clearly is pointing to Don Chuy. Now MA wants to pull a A-hole move on them... whether he says he is doing it for the family, we all know at least partially he is doing it for himself too... and if he gets Adolfo to help him prove that A-hole is the guilty one, how will MA help Adolfo come out of it 'better'? Is MA going to turn on him too just like A-hole did?

Gosh, I'm behind but want to take a quick moment to thank Julie, Marta and for today Madelaine for the recaps. You guys make it possible for me to stay with you for the fun.

Thanks anonymous (and Marta) for the property clarification. MA is a jerk. How is he going to become likeable??

Can't wait to see Mini talking about Chucky. LOL,

Julie, feel better.

Barbara

Jarifa, Anon, and Marta:

Thanks so very much for the clarifications. Especially about the Menchaca property. All of you are so right about MA. He sure feels entitled doesn't he? I can't stand him right now either. And that sure makes sense about Ahole, he is just like him right now isn't he? There has got to come a time when he sees the light, about how hard it is to live and work in La Nopalera, with a low wage and supporting a family. He really hasn't had to do that so far. The Menchacas are supporting him and he needs to finally get on his own two feet. I am hoping something happens where he has his ah, ha moment.

Barbara:

I am so glad you are sticking with us. This is really such a great TN.

Jarifa:

Have you ever thought of recapping, cause girl you are so good! If you are just click on my icon and email me : )

Marta:

I am always so happy for your input. It really helps me out.

Anon:

Are you a Spanish speaker? You are really good too. Please pick a name when you sign in so we know who you are. I also thank you so very much for your input.

Oh wow, thank you Madelaine and everyone so much. At lunch today I'll consolidate all your helpful comments into a team recap for posterity's sake.

I got to watch the first half of the episode this morning before work but don't have much to add. Thanks for the coverage, everyone.

(I did think it was funny that after all this waiting, Mr. Trejo's replacement at the property developer basically told them the same thing Mr. Trejo did. The thing is, Trejo had seemed to think there was more, but needed time to look into it. Kinda makes me wonder if there are additional details that this new guy hasn't uncovered yet. Most likely the rest of the story is temporarily tangled up in the labyrinth of Mati's mind.)

Madelaine, you made my day with your invitation to recap!
If only I had the time I would. Commenting is all I can really manage right now but I will put your invite on the back burner if my situation changes. Thank you so much.

Jarifa

Thanks, Julie and the volunteer recap team. Hope you feel better, Julie.

MA needs to look for the win-win finish to the Nopalera property deal. The pay phone experience supplied a small dose of humility, but not enough!

Jarifa:

You are that good : )

La Paloma:

So good to see you here. I agree about the Nopalera property. Don Aurelio seemed like a stand up guy, but tough on his grandsons who always had everything they ever wanted. I wish they would do some flashbacks so we could see the friendship that Don A and Don Chuy had. Don A sure was looking out for the Menchacas.

We are lucky to have such a good group of readers/recappers. Honestly, based on what I've seen today, any or all of you could recap if you don't already. (And I'm not just saying that because we need more recappers!)

I put all the pertinent comments together along with a few notes I took on the first half I watched this morning, so now we have a decent recap. Thanks again, everyone!

Unbelievable how unlikeable MA continues to be. Saul is correct that he is just like his cousin Ahole, unethical. I think he is really fed up with his constant focus not on clearing his name but on screwing the Menchacas out of money. MA is not a very good friend when he tells him I need money to pay Adolfo so we can sell your car, he refused the other man's offer of money in the beginning and a place to stay. If I were Saul I cut the contact off to business only and tell MA you aren't the man I thought you were. Considering what they have had to put up with with MA and the RP's the million seems an awfully low reward.

Poor Diego, dreams shot down (or at least for now) and his little secret may not be so hidden anymore.

Hilarious watching Carmelita get a new suitor although she isn't really on to it. Funny it didn't seem to click with Don Chuy, just like it hasn't really clicked with Nepo that the women they regard as a sister or a good friend might just be something more.

Mr Suave Adolfo is starting to look like something the cat dragged in living in a cheap hotel. Surely he ought to be have more money he could get his hands on.

AS and Leo cut off at the hotel. Better have a back up plan which of course they don't. Actually I was surprised to see a classy five star hotel already dunning them for money. The pair of them must be running up one hell of a big bill.

Julie sorry to hear about your migraine and hope you feel better soon. Thanks to you and the team effort for this recap.

It is a sad statement that Adolfo, a villain, also told MA he was acting just like his cousin. Like Mads, I'm hoping he comes to the light soon but I think he'll have to be further humiliated and more self-awareness before that happens.

I wonder if AS and Leo may go to jail. That would be a good anvil for stealing from Menchacas. Perhaps when they go to jail, MA will see this is a foreshadowing to what he is trying to do to them.

I must have gotten it wrong Monday night - I really thought the hotel receptionist told Ahole and Mini that the RPs had checked out. I guess they only said they were gone for the day.

It is quite possible that the hotel manager heard through the grapevine (or even from Ahole himself) that AS wasn't paying for things and that's why they were cut off. I wonder how much longer this charade can continue.

Like everyone else, I am pretty disgusted with MA and I think his bad behavior has even turned off and drove away a few of our readers/commenters here.

I don't know if MA's rottenness means that he's in for a serious descent into misery before he learns his lesson/does his penance, like Don Fernando's pseudo-suicidal trip to Acapulco in LFMB; get visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve and wake up a reformed man; or if he's somehow going to have a light and charming transformation where all will be forgiven.

The only good thing is that he hasn't actually cheated anyone yet. But he's getting awfully close.

Good thing for MA that he has some funny scenes like trying to figure out how to use the pay phone, because otherwise he is awful. The look on Saul's face when MA pocketed Saul's paper money after trying to stuff it into the card slot on the phone was hilarious. Saul is getting really fed up with him.

I think the deaf guy in the inmobiliario knew about another clause, but he said it wouldn't be revealed until after all the required papers were brought by the owner. What kind of game was Aurelio playing? Did he intend for Don Chuy to only get the money if he HAPPENED to find that note, which was pretty well hidden, or were there supposed to be more clues that either were lost somehow or Aurelio died before he could complete whatever he intended?

Maca is such a tacky condesa. I'm not sure she could have crammed in any more mentions that she is RICH and a CONDESA. So will we get a wedding, or will AS be exposed first? Is there any chance Leo and Maca would still want to be married if neither of them had money? Judging from how Maca's tears of joy were all on the inside after Leo's most mirrey proposal, I'm guessing not. But I hope she hangs around for awhile!

Madelaine:

Thank you for your kind words. I AM a Spanish speaker (bilingual Mexican American) and I comment infrequently, as I watch tns sporadically, which is why I always forget to sign my name. I've signed it before, though. My name is Naima.

Anon (Naima)

Julie- I really hope you are feeling better.

Mads, and Amigos- Thanks for filling in for the recap. I missed last night's epi, but I see our "hero" is still being pretty shady. What will it take for him to learn?

Looking forward to seeing AS and Leo's reactions upon finding out they have been cut off by the hotel.

Thank you, Naima!

Julia - I could be wrong, but I think Aurelio was expecting Mati to pick up the loose ends on this particular clause. That's why she said earlier that he had told her... um... she couldn't remember. Then she did remember, dashed off to the old house to get/do it, and apparently forgot again (or did she?) before MA and Frida found her.

Just like she forgot about the bust for a while, searched around for she wasn't sure what, but recognized it when she saw it.

It makes me wonder if she wasn't just PRETENDING to be confused when they brought her home the other night. Maybe she is testing MA or giving him a chance to do the right thing before she reveals what she knows.

Everybody - just to be clear, the migraine was yesterday. It really knocked the everything out of me, and then I went to bed early (I was asleep before 9). I get them frequently, but usually they are not so bad and so persistent as to defy two different prescriptions AND wipe me out for an entire day.

But I'm fine today. Thanks for your good wishes. I just wish I'd had time to watch the whole thing this morning. I'll watch the rest tonight, because I'd like to see MA fight a pay phone. (I'm guessing there wasn't a chair there too, or that would have been the end of him.)

Naima:

Welcome to Caray Caray, I am so glad you comment even if it is sporadically. This particular Grandfather clause is so confusing. Who has the paperwork? What does Mati know as Julie says, and when did she know it?

Julie:

I think you are on to something there. What does Mati know? I wonder if she is pretending too cause she is constantly reminding MA about honesty, truth, don't be like Ahole, etc. I think she may just be watching his actions to see how he'll handle this and then maybe lower the boom. Maybe she'll give that paperwork to the Menchaca instead of MA now wouldn't that be something?

Thank you ladies for the wonderful job you do recapping 

Let’s see what AS will do now that the hotel is cutting her off! She will have to be very
Creative so that Maca doesn’t find out what’s going on.

I really like Saul and think he is one of the more reasonable characters in this TN.
Too bad MA does not listen to him. I don’t know how MA even suggested that Saul sell his car to pay Adolfo. I don’t think MA appreciates the friend he has.

Wonder what Lupita and Carmelita were thinking with those looks they exchanged once they realized that Diego was looking for Leonardo?

I don’t understand why Lupita doesn’t just break up with Nepo. She clearly has no
Romantic feelings for him so it just doesn’t make sense that she keeps on with that ‘realationship’.

I agree with many of you who think MA is much like Alejo, they are self fish individuals willing to step over others to get what they want.

Evelin

The other day we were all surprised that AS didn't betray MA but I'm thinking if AHole makes another run at her MA will be on the chopping block. She needs this marriage to go through no matter what it costs. I can't help laughing every time I think about these families of broke rich people, each one thinking they have the catch of the year to get them out of trouble. I'm even willing to bet that Maca is telling her family I got him to propose and we're safe and I don't even care if he's gay. Lordy I can't wait to sew what happens when the financial truth comes out and the truth about Leo if it is the truth.

I didn't think it was so surprising when AS didn't betray MA the other night - she thought she had a better meal ticket within reach, and she was probably happy to tell Ahole to stuff it since it was his fraud that put her in the poorhouse to begin with. (I AM surprised that he didn't threaten to turn her in for writing bad checks, but maybe he's saving that for a rainy day.)

I WILL be surprised if AS doesn't go running back to Ahole as soon as the Macarena situation falls through.

Thanks to Julie and the team. Excellent job!

Go Saul. I'm still waiting for MA to grow a spine and stop taking the easy way out. Lately everything he does makes him look like an inept weakling, even the way he carries fruit. Maybe we shouldn't be so surprised by his behavior. If he can't be trusted to sit in a chair without hurting himself, how can we trust him to solve his problems with sense and dignity? I still think he's amusing and find myself rooting for him, I just hope more of his good qualities are shown soon.

Rikki

Neat, a group recap. What fun.

Julie, I'm so glad that you are feeling better now. I have always had such sympathy for my patients who suffered from migraines.

Lots of little cute things like:

Maca drinks calimochos (Coke and red wine).

AS doesn't think that her Church considers beach weddings valid.

Isela considers herself an expert liar and then explains to Minnie that it's important to pay attention to details.

The whole conversation with the guy at the real estate place.

What fun.

I'm having a difficult time disliking any of the characters in this because the whole thing is so much fun and so entertaining.

Carlos

Coke and red wine? That's a thing? I... I don't think I would like that, but now I feel compelled to try it!

I don't want to dislike MA, but as his karma bill gets bigger and bigger I need to see some sign that he's capable of evolving. Recognizing that his armpits smell bad was a good baby-step, but plotting to rip off poor people and now dissing his only friend are giant steps in the wrong direction.

Julie, I've never tried a calimocho either and I laughed when she had to explain it to the waiter. You try one first and let me know how it is. It sounds like a drink suitable to serve at Maria's (LQLVMR) table on the Patio.

Thanks for posting the carnitas recipe. I love Pati. They have aired her shows on Public TV here previously and have just recently began showing them again. She has a twin sister who did an episode with her and the were so cute together. Often they would either say the same thing simultaneously or finish each others sentences.

Carlos

Another little bit of character is how Maca keeps saying Mexico is third world. I'd agree there are parts of Mexico that are third world, but I don't think that a waiter in the swankiest hotel in Mexico City needing an explanation for her disgusting beverage choice can be chalked up to his being "third-world". And then there's the way she wants to buy all the stuff from the super-posh boutiques to "help out the third world people". Eyeroll-worthy, but funny.

She thinks it's the third world even though Leo hasn't taken her anywhere near that's remotely third-worldy.

I love the way Maca so perfectly mirrors AS and Leo without their realizing it. Everything she says and does sounds like something Leo or AS has said or done before.
