Lo Que la Vida Me Robó Lunes 4/28/14 # 119
Whether that was true or not, José Luis knew she believed it.
Labels: robo
Most memorable lines: "She was exactly as he remembered her, light blonde with eyes like sapphires and a figure that could stop traffic."
"Monica, who was also in civvies. Civvies that displayed assets her uniform was designed to hide."
And for Fab, in keeping with her level of class, "...She knew that José Luis had gotten out of the
joint..."
My favorite, about Gracie, "She grinned like some female villain out of a Disney cartoon. " So, so true.
I can't believe how fast you got this up!
Well, Ale is alive. Surprise! I hope the writers don't expect us to believe he has been in a coma for 6 years and still looks so perfect,. Fasten your beanies, Patio!
I knew from an interview with Rulli that he had filmed in Argentina, so I was waiting for this, but wasn't sure when it would happen. Thank goodness it came today, because this story needs to move along.
Finita keeps getting mentioned, so she can't be far behind. I want her back more than anyone else. I want to see her with Dimi again!
I have to admit JL was pretty great tonight. He was funny and charming with Montse and insulted Gracie! And his scenes with Esme continue to be great.
But I'm really not looking forward to Montse getting back with him and of course Ale coming back, having learned absolutely nothing, and being angry with her. What's worse is that Ale just isn't as understanding as JL. He's not going to take a possible marriage between his wife and JL the way JL did in the reversed situation.
EMarie, I totally agree it is beanie time re. Ale's physical condition.
It was comical that they placed Jose Luis right next to the name of Montse's pastry shop: "Ligera tentacion" (light temptation). I think he will prove to be more than just a "light temptation" in Montse's life.
So Maria left town after it became clear that Ale probably was dead. I hope she is gone for good but I think she will be darkening the skies of Aguazul again. I could see her becoming Fabiola's. BFF. Talking about Fabiola, she will grab a bottle in any household and serve herself ASAP. What a lush and general PITA! When Ale regains his name and property--- as he must-- I hope he runs her off as rudely as she evicted Montse. That was a good flashback of Montse's last minutes at Ale's house.
Jose Luis's idea of paying Graciela to butt out was ingenious.
I am glad that Carlota now owns the family house. She will now have a place if Ezequiel ends up in the big house somewhere down the line.
Waiting for the news from Buenos Aires!
Jarifa
Amelia looked the same, but Gracie looked a little ...oh, maybe drab?
And we see that Alejandro is alive, at least. How much alive and to what purpose we'll have to discover soon.
So Maria just disappeared? Hmmm, she's bound to pop up again.
I really enjoyed the Mike Hammer link with the "Harlem Nocturne" recording. Always one of my favorite sax tunes, very evocative.
Someone made a point yesterday about Monserrat no longer being under her mother's thumb. That doesn't stop Gracie, though. She will always try to retie the apron strings on both her children. They aren't real people to her; she's still a sadistic little girl playing with her dolls in a destructive way.
What is bothering me more at the moment is Carlota's insecurity and how she is communicating "A woman is nothing without a man" to Monserrat, who can't blow that off with the same impunity as she can her mother's puppet strings.
Honestly, if I were the head writer I would end this series with Alejandro getting his family and estate back, selling all his property and businesses, and taking his family far away to start over again.
I included "Harlem Nocturne" because I love the music of film noir. That song is a classic.
We all KNEW Alejandro was alive. Even so, it's a relief to KNOW that he's alive. Seven years is long enough for the Prince to remain under a spell. Now it's time for him to wake up.
Graciela reduced to straight hair and distressed denim? She looks almost human.
I'm so glad you included the funniest bit -- when Carlota exuberantly lifts her diminutive, homicidal husband off his feet.
My DVR box again pooped out on me in the middle last night and had to be rebooted, so I missed 5-6 minutes, but it sounds like from your details, Urban that it may have been during commercials.
But have to say I wanted to just slap most everyone silly last night with Montserrat. So the guy gets out of jail, and she's supposed to start picking out the dress and making the wedding plans. Carlotta's pushing was just sad and nothing burns me up more than when a woman, and a successful one at that, is told she is still nothing without a man. Monse already has not allowed herself to become Carlotta...a woman who had been so immersed into her family she had no idea how to exist without just caring for someone. Monse went out and became a provider and business woman.
And Esme's wondering if JL had told her he wants her back? Day One. I'll stop ranting now.
And to think we actually thought Fabs might be redeemable at a future point. May she drown in a vat of the cheapest red.
I had known Rulli was in Argentina filming, so did know he survived just didn't want to spoil. But have to love and yes, park that beanie, to see the man after 6-7 years in a coma with his studly muscles and nary a pound lost.
So help me Maria surfaces in Argentina and I'll need to have someone remove the breakables in the house. And why did Adolfo wait 7 years to see Maria...c'mon. Plot contrivance.
Ah Dim, back to some of his old ways with the womanizing to try and forget his broken heart. Someone needs a hug and it better not be that floozy Captain. Do NOT like her...what and who is she really?
JL is making a big mistake. Should have just ignored Graceless. No amount of money will ever be enough to have her stick her nose out of her daughter's business if she thinks there's a benefit for her. She was beyond despicable last night. And so help me, can someone PLEASE pick up that statue and stand it on end. Driving me crazy!
Note to EJ--saw you late on the blog last night. Hope all is going well. Thinking of you.
Daisynjay
Maria has to reappear with the original will in her hand.
The episode was interesting, and I was happy to see José-Luis feeling happy and confident. I am excited about his decision to pursue Montse.
My biggest laugh came from the extended Toyota Tundra product placement scene. It was pretty shameless, but I admired the audacity.
Who knew the Tundra not only had horsepower enough to pull a personal yacht, but also had the emotional power to trigger such enduring memories for Montserrat? And it also seemed to play a such significant part in Montse and Ale's love for each other and their family life with little Laurito in general.
How could I have missed this before?
Many thanks again, Urban Anthropologist.
I laughed hard at the Dimitrio scene with that woman,it shows that he is still a Dimwit with women like he was in his prime times, atleast Monica is there! I hope that Monica does not turn into a Femme Fatale after Josefina would inevitably return
Also for those who watched Amor Real how evil was Ramon( Pedro) in that novela, was he the same Satan as Pedro is?
Monserrat is not even 30 at this point, much too young for anyone to worry about whether she will be alone for the rest of her life. Which would still not be the end of the world if it's her choice. She has family (excluding Gracie), the ability to make friends, and a child to raise. I am strongly of the opinion that children should have two parents when possible but they should be the right two parents.
Gracie loves interfering in her children's lives to the extent that I am actually wondering whether she enjoys the process even more than the end result she is looking for. That's how control freaks are. The delight in the continued anxiety of others.
In addition to the lines already quoted I loved "She had clapped her hands as though she were a schoolmistress in Oliver Twist's orphanage", "Surely this man had a daughter named Pandora somewhere" and "To his credit, he did not miss the latent malice in her tone".
While I wish JL had not spoken with Graciela, I reflected on this and came to the conclusion he likely did not have a choice. He knows the evil she is capable of and likely did not want her to ruin this second chance. The fact that he has no chance is beside the point.
Dimitrio is a mischevious imp. He is back to his old ways I was slightly saddened to see. It is certainly time for Fina to return.
Not sure what Monica's interest is here but I suspect she has her own agenda.
Fab's banishing everyone from her house was cold. Very cold. Shared mother/daughter evil and imperious traits are emerging.
NovelaMaven, still chuckling at "Graciela reduced to straight hair and distressed denim? She looks almost human". Yes. Almost!
UA, thank you for this wonderful treat.
Diana
I was on a call, so I watched this on mute. Why did it look like both Gracie and JL were escapees from the 80s? I'm glad that JL stayed true to himself and did not purchase Gracie's "help" to "win" Monse. Of course, we know paying her to butt out will also backfire on him, but glad to know the writers haven't totally done a 180 with his character.
Julia R.- Even watching the sweet Tundra family memories on mute, I couldn't help cracking up. And it went on forever! LOL!
I don't think Dim has totally regressed. He's not a lazy, gambling, scam artist. And the women he's dating/bedding seem to know he's not serious about them, so I don't see the issue. He's single and he's a grown man. As long as he's not trying to swindle these women out of money, making false promises, plotting fake marriages, and they are all grown women (not naive teens like Virginia), then I don't have a problem with it.
So glad you both had a good laugh at the Tundra product placement scene, too!
I wonder if by the time the show ends they will have succeeded in getting me to go out and buy one of the things.
Has the show gone sci-fi? The only thing that felt familiar was the already mentioned car placement -- so I'm clinging to that Tundra until rescue arrives.
And Vivi, I couldn't agree with you more about Dim! it's been 7 long years and not a peep from Fina. She had made goodbyes with an emphasis she was not most likely coming back. I'm sure after all this time, he has resolved himself to that, and it is a bit heartbreaking that despite the flippant attitude and speed dating, he hasn't gotten over her. I'm sure by now, his reputation precedes him, so these pretty lasses most likely know what he's all about. Otherwise, he's still doing a good job, staying loyal to his sister and friends and more importantly, staying away from the gambling and his mother.
Daisynjay
Daisynjay, I so enjoy your comments and ITA that everyone pushing Montse to marry again is so last century.
Julia R, your Tundra observation gave me my laugh of the am.
Diana, though we JL is paying off Gracie to stay out of his business, it seems the writers are being very lazy here. Not only do the optics look bad but making any deal w/Gracie is a Faustian bargain.
Vivi, ITA w/your assessment of Dim.
Put me in the club thinking that check to Gracie for doing nothing is going to come back and bite JL on the butt. I am so dreading Monse crying Me compraste!!! again.
Carlota's advice to Monse didn't bug me. Monse definitely does not have to run out and get married again, ever. But she hasn't dated in seven years though some guys may have tried. And there was this guy she loved years ago who sacrificed himself for her well-being and happens to be rich and out of prison. Plus, Monse not only lost her husband but her best friend too. She needs to spend time with someone other than her son and mother-in-law.
So the plane went down in Mexico, but Ale winds up in a hospital in Argentina? I need to check my geography. My theory is that one of the nurses is wild about Ale and shaves him and massages his body everyday to keep the muscles toned.
ITA Carlota lifting EZ in joy was the highlight. Is it possible EZ's feelings for Carlota will become his Achilles' heel? I'm guessing he would hate for Carlota to find out what he really is, while Pedro wouldn't give a damn about Amalia finding out as long as she stayed in line.
As someone else already said, I don't think that JL giving Gracie money to butt out is a good move.
What he should do is ignore her completely and trust that Montse is old enough to handle herself and strong enough to make decisions regardless of what anyone says.
Anything other than that still feels like manipulation to me.
He played it rather cool with her in the bakery and then he made it clear to Esme that he won't act like a fool again. But this laid back, rather cold approach that he is taking makes me feel like he might be a little bit unhinged.
So Ale is alive... I hope Victor and Nadia are ok, too and the three of them make a triumphant return of some sort to Aguazul sooner rather than later.
I'm in the wrong job field. We never have that kind of opportunity in Finance.
Maybe they let hospital colunteers help? Be happy to at least relieve that poor overworked woman with that patient. Just sayin'.
Daisynjay
I need lunch.
Daisynjay
I am disappointed that the JL and Montse roller coaster goes on. I was hoping he would fall for someone else. Capt. Monica was the obvious choice but since she has eyes for Dimi I guess the plot isn't going that direction. I fear JL will lose Montse for a 2nd time.
Fofito is so dangerous now but I wonder why after so many years he finally comes looking for that will. Can't be for a good purpose.
Amelia was wrong, Macario knows the truth about Fabs.
Oh how I wish JL didn't go to Graciela! It surely will come back to bite him royally and she deserves less than nothing.
Maybe Victor and Nadia made it, too and they are in charge of Ale's health?
Or maybe Ale had some ID on him when he was found?
Aren't they almost Graciela's age by now?
It just seems strange to me that they would get this storyline instead of a younger couple like Esme and Refugio.
Demetrius ...In Amor Real, Ramon (police chief)was corrupt, but no where near as evil and crazy as Ped. He was abusive to his wife and cheated on her with the Fab character (Marie in Amor Real) and conspired to take the galan's land and inheritance.
I like Mony's new look. I would wear those longer skirts and colorful tops. Her new clothing style , softer, hairdo, and minimal makeup make her look younger and softer.
Ah..Sleeping Beauty has been found at last. I wonder if his traveling companions survived, too. Will Ale learn the tango now that he has turned up in Argentina ? Will be remember his tiny dancer back in Bluewater when he awakens from his long sleep ?
I must admit that JL looks good...except for that five o'clock shadow that he cannot get rid of. At least he looks showered and well dressed now that Esme has taken him on that shopping spree.
Jarifa
Now Ale waking up and becoming anything like normal, believable? Not so much.
Vivi, you are right, Amelia was just lying. I hate these time jumps because why did it take her 7 years to ask the most obvious person?
Didn't like Tia pushing JL on Mons.
OT: havent' seen an ad for the new novela replacing Por Siempre. Maybe they're going back to three novelas a night (or three new ones, with a re-air at 10:00)?
Thanks Vivi for the Premios info.
Nanette
So Alejandro lives? 7 years in coma? If he wakes up and is able to walk out it will indeed be amazing.
I cracked up at the unwrapping of that beautiful Tundra. Now if it's been sitting like that all these years and is cranked up and driven away, it will be even more amazing than Alejandro walking out of the hospital.
Zeke and Carlota are so cute and happy together that it's a shame that he is so evil. How heartbreaking will it be when Carlota discovers what she has married?
Watching JL peeking through the window at Montse was no less creepy for me the second time around and label it what you will, it sure looks to me that his deal with Gracie is very similar to the one that she struck with Alejandro.
I use the close captions as well as try to listen closely and JL is not always the easiest to understand. You translated part of his discussion with Gracie this way:
"...I have to secure my future.”
“Your indulgences.”
“My future."
“Very well. Your luxury is your future."
The CCs had that part of the conversation this way (and this also the way I heardit although admittedly my hearing is not so good as it once was):
"...ahora sí voy a asegurar mi futura."
"Tu vejez."(old age)
"Mi futura."
"Esta bién, esta bién, tu futuro es tu vejez."
Also Gracie looked clearly annoyed. I don't think that she is particularly sensitive about her love of luxury but getting old is quite another matter. I wouldn't have even brought this up except that this way it looks as though JL has a bit of a mean streak.
Carlos
Or he is just a tragic conflicted hero.
"I think EZs plan is to terminate Pedro at the right moment and blame Ale for the death and then he would bring Ale to juicio."
I doubt that is his current plan since as far as he's concerned, Alejandro is dead.
Carlos
Have to laugh -- It's amazing to me how the folks working on this are able to draw the story out. It would have been perfect ended some weeks ago -- save for the matter of Dimi and Fina -- but good for them that they keep on going even when it begins to feel like The Twilight Zone.
Whatever else is going on with Carlota and EZ, she looks great and am happy to see that. And always happy to be able to leap through the screen and attempt to live in the beautiful vistas.
7 years in a hospital bed -- well, you know, just the same really as all other characters looking exactly the same except for costume and hair changes.
As for Monse and JL -- yawn. Would love to wear Monse's Betty Draper green knit sweater top and floral skirt with belt. Gorgeous.
And the Tundra remaining timeless and capable of transporting young children and casais apaixonados.
If the actress who plays Faviola is not swilling down grape juice in these scenes, then either she can hold her wine or she'd drunk on the set.
Vivi in DC, you read my mind: "Why did it look like both Gracie and JL were escapees from the 80s?" When I saw Gracie in her denim vest it immediately transported me back to the days of Canaveral de Pasiones. Perhaps she had to sell off all her fancy dresses to pay the bills, just didn't make enough to hire a housekeeper!
Niecie in MD: "So the plane went down in Mexico, but Ale winds up in a hospital in Argentina? I need to check my geography" I was wondering about that too. What route was that plane heading? I was under the impression that it went down shortly after they took off. Carvivlie and Adriana Noel, hoping that at least, since the nurse did call him by name, Vic, Nadia and baby made it through, and are just too scared to notify anyone less Pedro catch up to them.
Like a lot of you, I laughed so much at the Tundra placement, and even more when Tia Carlotta picked up EZ so effortlessly.
I am also enjoying Mac and Dominga being together, and that they are still there for Ale's family. And although Mac looks a little older, I don't think Dominga is as old as Gracie. I think she had mentioned earlier in the series that she was very young when Ale was a little boy, so hopefully their desires for a baby can come true.
Hated the scene where Fab kicks Montse and family out of the beach house. How cruel! I do hope that Fab finds out soon who her parents are, maybe that will inspire her to change a bit and not end up all alone like Gracie.
Maricruz
And loved the clever juxtaposition of your heading Bitter Memories with the über-saccharine Sweet Shoppe setting. Some other funny lines, (especially for you Ms. Wharton!)
While Captain Monica was assessing Lieutenant Dimitrio in a distinctly non-regulation manner
and "out of the slammer", "spending every night with a different dame" and then this wistful description:
"The photos could have been taken for a bridal magazine or a society page, but now all they were were burning embers in his heart."
Nifty.
Also loved your speculation that my darling Mac has a daughter named Pandora somewhere.
Again, an excellent pastiche. Witty. Poignant at times. So well observed.
I thought José Luis' return to the old apartment was ghostly and sad. There is nothing more depressing than a long-empty house with dust covers everywhere, phantoms of a happy past.
Also glad some of you brought up the ENDLESS Toyota product placement. Not quite so ridiculous as when Tia encouraged Colunga, in Alborada, to use some Crema Conchanaca on his burns, but still!...
As for the grizzled Mac and Dominga trying to have kids, my great grandfather started his second family at age 65 and had 5 more girls and boys to add to his earlier brood of 8 grown sons. And my female ancestors all had babies up through 45 or 56. So that's life for country folks!.
Ooops and in the above comment...that's 45 or 46. I don't know any relatives of the female persuasion who reproduced into their 50's although it has happened, according to Guiness.
I don't think EZ was ever planning to blame Alejandro for anything. That would have ruined his sweet deal with his plan to marry Carlota. He was looking for an opportunity to bring Pedro down and any good information would do.
It does surprise me that he hasn't figured out that Pedro was the motorcyclist in the accident that Alejandro was blamed for.
Could it be that the plane crash is not the thing responsible for Alejandro's present condition? That something else happened in between? I guess tonight is Must-See TV.
I loved the references to Fabiola's liquor problem....
"Just as he was out the door he saw her sit on the white sofa and face the liquor cart, her main source of pleasure."
"Well, help yourself,” he said. And she did, pouring herself a glass of red wine, which she drank as quickly as anyone else might drink water."
"Fabiola had opened another bottle of wine in order to cope with the fact that Amelia wasn't willing to talk."
Yes, it will be devastating for her to find out his true nature and feel that she's been betrayed, but she's had a fairly long run of naive happiness. I think he really does care for her and they seem compatible at least in the official side of their relationship that we get to see.
Who knows, she may forgive him as a trade off to keep her current social status--and to be able to look down on her "long in the tooth," denim and stringy-haired SIL.
We know almost everything about that accident. We know that it was actually Benjamin Almonte who was driving the pickup. We know that he made Alejandro take the responsibility by saying he was driving, and we also know that the forensic report said that he wasn't actually responsible because the motorcycle was going at maximum speed at the time. The crash was unavoidable.
At some point the name of the victim was redacted from the report; this was in the scene with Loreto early on. Benjamin's money probably did that somehow. What we don't know is anything the report says about the nature of the injuries.
EZ explains: Nadia and her lover were chatting -- he guesses they don't know they're performing for a camera -- and he heard her tell Victor about Pedro's unfortunate motorcycle accident. Then EZ remembered that Alejandro was the driver in a similar accident. And he got it! "The boy on the bike was you, licenciado!" That's why you hate Alejandro so much -- he crippled you as a man!"
(Alejandro es el culpable de que usted haya sido mutilado...como hombre.)
Can Captain Monica make an honest man out of Dimwattage?
It's obvious that this man eater is about to come on to him like a ton of bricks.
Poor Fina!
Just finished your recap. It was awesome. I felt as though I was reading a detective novel, or watching a film noir. Fantastic work!
Sorry I am so late to comment, but I have so much going on at work, I barely have time to eat and sleep. Hopefully I can comment more later tonight. I haven't read any comments. I hope to read some during my dinner break. Thanks again Urban!
NovelaMaven,
Thanks for Friday's recap. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You had me laughing. Sorry I had no time to comment this past weekend. Gracias de nuevo!
Back to work...hasta pronto!
"Which means that it makes no sense for him to have waited 6-7 years to do anything about it."
Yes, it's almost as though everyone in Agua Azul has been dormant these last 7 years (at least María managed to escape) and now are suddenly waking up. I fully expect that tonight Alejandro will flutter his eyelashes, blink, open his eyes and utter, ¿Monserrat?
Next!
