Qué Pobres, Lunes 4/28/14 (#80): Bambi and the Bimbo

I've been out of the loop for about a week, and am behind on reading recaps and comments, so please forgive me if some of this is a rerun:

Alejo (Ahole) wants to give Emiliano his name. He reminds Lupita that he has every right to be in Emil's life. Lupita asks him to give her some time. ("I need some time" appears to be the only strategy in her repertoire for dealing with difficult situations. Not that I have a better suggestion.) She asks Ahole to give her and Emiliano some space while she comes to terms with this.

Drunker than ever, AS assures MA she'll pay back the money she stole from the Menchacas. She tells Chuy she'll pay every cent after Leo gets married. She doesn't go so far as to reveal that it was actually she and not MA who stole the money, though, and she has to endure some "supportive" comments from Chuy about parents who are disgraced by their children's behavior.

Bambi's bimbo reporter hassles the married police detectives about some "rumors," but I miss most of this scene.

MA agrees to let Tomas handle his case, though he has second thoughts when he finally accepts Tom's "card" and see's that it's handwritten. But the partnership quickly pays off in an unexpected way: MA needs to borrow a car for the chauffeuring gig with Bambi's aunt, and Tomas is able to hook him up. One of his divorce clients got a car from his wife as part of his settlement, and he owes Tomas a favor. Wow! Tomas must be really good. Someday he will be able to buy a suit that fits him.

MA tells Tom about his plan to strike a deal with Bambi. Tom asks him to be careful.

MA is staying with Carmelita and Gwendy for now. Carmelita tells him she's going to help him get back together with Lupita. She also asks that if he sprinkles when he tinkles, to please be neat and wipe the seat.

Meanwhile, Gwendy wants to make double-triple sure that Lupita is absolutely done with Nepo forever and ever, because "someone" is in love with him but doesn't want to get in the way if Lupita wants him. Lupita quickly surmises that Gwendy is that "someone." Lupita is beyond thrilled.

Ahole admits to Emiliano's principal that his son is already enrolled at the school. Emiliano is his son, his only living relative, but he resorted to this charade because Lupita is being weird about it. The gullible principal is touched by his story and promises to be discreet. She lets Ahole have a private talk with Emiliano. (This is the kind of thing that gets teachers and principals chased by a mob of angry parents on the 11:00 news.)

The principal tells Emiliano that this stranger is a benefactor of the school. Ahole gives Emiliano a gift - a book about horses - and asks him to keep it a secret. (If that had been a four-pack of wine coolers instead of a book about horses, this could have been a Dateline Special Edition: To Catch a Predator show.) Emiliano talks a little more; Ahole looks bored. He also offers to take Em to his ranch to look at his horses, but Em doesn't think his mother and grandfather will let him.

MA picks up Bambi's aunt at the market and pretends to be surprised when she tells him to take her home to pick up another passenger. She goes into the house, and Bambi comes out; Bambi takes a good look at MA and says, "haven't we met before?" MA is shaken by Bambi's suspicion, but Bambi's bimbo calls, and then Bambi is too distracted and horny to worry about MA.

At the fonda, Chuy tells Lupita about AS's offer to pay back the money MA stole. Lupe tells Chuy the situation may not be what it appears, but he doesn't pay much attention. He and Lupita make up.

In disguise, the bimbo approaches the rendezvous site - an abandoned building - and calls the police anonymously on a different cell phone to tell them where they can find Bambi. (Suddenly there is a lot of noise, and we can't hear whether or not she gives the police the same address that Bambi did.) Then she smashes the phone and takes out her regular phone to make another call. (I missed this part; was she calling Bambi, or someone else?) The married police detectives get in their car...

At home, Gwendy is hungry. (Everyone gets hungry! It doesn't mean she's pregnant!) She tries to get Carmelita to explain why MA can't live with the Menchacas. Carmelita wisely declines.

At the abandoned building, Bambi tells MA to act as lookout and honk if anything suspcious comes up. After Bambi goes into the building, MA sees the bimbo enter the building too. She looks familiar, but (I think) he's not sure who she is. Tom calls, and MA says that Bambi recognized him.

At the fonda, Tizoc gives Frida a bill for 300 pesos, for meals, because "business is business." He's still sore that she took a 10% cut on the gig she got him at the nightclub. She gives him the money, but says he's being a brat and needs to grow up. He whistles insolently, but looks a little ashamed.

Bambi gives the bimbo a big bag of cash and shows her that he's put all of his European bank accounts in her name. He's still horny, but she wants to leave. They could get caught! Bambi mentions something about "some guy named Alejo Ruizpalacios."

Bambi goes back to the car. MA tries to make a deal with him to get proof of his innocence. Bambi is like, "you're lucky I don't have a gun." He thinks MA is threatening him. But the wail of approaching sirens cuts their conversation short.

Knowing that Bambi doesn't have a gun, does MA just sit there and let the police catch them? No. He floors it. (I think the detectives call in the registration, but it comes up as unknown?) After a lot of fancy driving (which MA learned from a professional racecar driver), he evades the police and takes Bambi back to his aunt's place.

Bambi tells him to wait outside for a moment, and disappears into Queta's house. Moments later, the police are coming up the street!

Next time:The bimbo calls the station and quits her job. Ahole tells Emiliano, "you are mine." And the detectives put together a picture of the getaway driver; he looks just like MA. Maybe he's not in Italy after all!

Thanks for the highlights, Julie. Looking forward to more details tomorrow. (With a Julie recap, we always want more, more, more!)

MA's lessons from the Italian race car driver really paid off, didn't they?

I agree about the school principal. She's not thinking clearly as she gives Alejo such easy access to Emiliano.

This principal needs to be fired. Somebody call Chris Hansen. Alejo is certainly a predator.

Cassandra G.

Thanks for the thread Julie and look forward to your recap.

Though Alejo did lie to the principal, she is, as La Paloma, said not thinking clearly and needs to be fired, as Cassandra noted. Not surprised Alejo is being a jerk, promised Lupe he would take wait until she was comfortable. I hope Emi does tell Lupe about this. Talk about a parent's worst nightmare, your child accepting gifts from a stranger and promising not to tell you.

Thanks Julie! I hate when education professionals are portrayed like that.

I hope I have time to watch the episode today.

Ah, "To Catch a Predator." That's what that show was called. I was thinking it was Dateline. Well... I'd just like to think that for what it costs Lupita to send her child to this school, that they'd be more sophisticated about this sort of thing. And that they'd teach their students to be suspicious of someone who tells them to keep secrets from their parents.

I'd also like to think that Lupita would have taught Emiliano better, too; but maybe she has. Maybe he'll tell her all about it when he gets home. Even if he doesn't, though, she ought to feel safe enough sending him to a place that has a locked gate and a protocol for pick-up time.

Okay, I have to let this go. I still need to write the actual recap. :-)

I was definitely shaking my head as the principal swallowed Alejo's story about being Emi's dad (with what proof?), and agreed to keep his visits a secret and then pushed Emi to accept his gifts! Que?!

Even if Lupe and he are having custody issues, it's none of her business. Lupe is the only parent on record, and the only one she should answer to. I was amused when later in the evening, in DQTQTQ, when faced with nearly the same issue, the school called one of the parents, who also happens to be a cop, with some very funny results.

Julie and Sara, totally agree. coming from a mother who was a 30 yr career public school teacher, I had to close my eyes for a second telling myself 'its just a tn, its just a tn'. Even when she worked at a public school, my mother would reach out to the parents for ANYTHING suspicious, she CERTAINLY WOULD NOT let any stranger get close to her kids (yes, she watched over them at recess). She went as far as going to the kids house a few times when issues came up. Many parents and even the kids (who are adults now) have approached her to thank her for making a difference in their lives...
so I get strongly emotional about a principal who not only allows a complete stranger (like Julie said, who IS NOT on the kids registration record as even a relative and she has no evidence of Lupe even knowing him) to approach and give presents to Emi (she even encouraged Emi to accept it). She also accepted his 'gift' of paying the school tuition for Emi. What about Lupe? her opinion in the matter doesn't count even if she is the registered mother?? GEEZ!!!
She needs to check her dictionary and some psychology books on the definition and habits/actions of predators and child molesters...
I missed something last night. Julie, what do you mean by the hiring of Tomas paying off already?

The recap is done... Marta, the payoff is that Tomas provided MA with a car for MA to drive Bambi around in.

Julie, thanks for a great recap of such an action filled episode!

Alejo sure has charmed that principal into doing his bidding. I have to keep reminding myself this is all just a fairy tale with any of the school scenes with security issues since it is so far from reality.

AS was her usual colorful self with intoning a supplication for the "blessed blood if Christ to inebriate her". The punchline was when the rest of the family answered "more?" in unison. Again MA and Leonardo had to play tag team to keep her upright after she had passed out yet again.

Poor don Chuy looked too hopeful when AS told him he would have his money sooner than he imagined.

MA was funny praying that he would not be sorry having chosen Tomas as a lawyer after seeing his handwritten homemade business card.

He was also funny still rolling over/crawling over the sofa.

Carmelita really got to the point after giving MA moral support and the keys by giving him instructions on how to use the bathroom at their house.

I was so happy that Lupita told Guendy that Nepo was all hers and also enjoyed Guendy's conversation with Carmelita. That ham she was eating sure looked good.

Thanks for the recap Julie.

Unfortunately I think the writers are giving us beanie time with the principal so Alejo can stir up trouble.

The car chase seen was amusing w/MA actually having a relevant skill

Julie,
that was a great recap! I totally agree on:
MA is staying with Carmelita and Gwendy for now. Carmelita tells him she's going to help him get back together with Lupita. She also asks that if he sprinkles when he tinkles, to please be neat and wipe the seat.
MA's face when she left after saying that was priceless! also his face praying he would not regret having hired Tomas.

Karen,

The car chase seen was amusing w/MA actually having a relevant skill
ROFLOL!! good one!! that was some skill backing up in a turn and hiding behind a commercial van while the cops went right by... yes, that and being able to 'fake' a fine dining waiter are the skills he has shown so far.

Marta, you put those bathroom instructions in such a poetic rhyming way.! You made me laugh.

Jarifa

If you mean "if you sprinkle while you tinkle," I read it on a restroom wall at the beach when I was a kid. Like all children, I was more apt to remember it because it was inappropriate. ;-)

Yes, i was just quoting from Julie's recap... great quote, have to remember that one for my grandsons... lol!

Julie, so, the thanks goes to you for the good laugh. I never heard that saying before.

Jarifa

Thanks Julie for yet another fine and informative recap. Well done and very amusing.

"...Gwendy is hungry. (Everyone gets hungry! It doesn't mean she's pregnant!)"

The thought didn't even cross my mind (I was so intrigued watching her nibble that slice of ham)... but... hmmm...

"Bambi gives the bimbo a big bag of cash and shows her that he's put all of his European bank accounts in her name."

Thanks, I didn't realized that he's turned everything over to her. Poor Bambi.

Like the rest of you, I was appalled by the principal. Can't blame Alejo too much, he was just being Alejo, but what she is doing is both unthinkable as well as scary.

I enjoyed the exchange between the reporter and the married cop-couple and the way they kept mispronouncing her name (Malave... which I suppose could be translated as bad bird). She's funny and cute as are the cops. I hope we see more of all of them.

Carlos

I might be wrong about the bank accounts. He was talking about Europe and Spain, and putting something in her name. It occurred to me later that he might have meant something else in her name, like airline tickets or hotel reservations. But I really think it was bank accounts.

Until now I would have found it hard to imagine Bambi being such a sap, but he does get really sappy around her. And he really does have to hide his accounts somewhere. But it looks like he's trusting the wrong person.

There's another possibility, though. We didn't hear the address she gave to the cops on the phone. It is possible that she sent the cops to the wrong place, but someone else could have tipped them off to the right place.

Julie, thanks for the great recap. I haven't been able to comment as I struggled to keep up this past week. I am grateful for the time you are taking in your busy schedule to do this recap.

I am definitely under the impression Bambi put bank accounts into the reporter's name. Could he have really put all his money into these accounts? How stupid!

I'm also pretty sure it the reporter gave the police the correct place to find Bambi.

Barbara

Thank you Julie. I missed the line where MA said he got driving lessons from a race car driver. He did have some fancy moves there.

I laughed at the play on Malave's name. Female cop called her Malafe, (bad faith) and I think male cop called her Malame, (bad me).
Didn't Malave flip through the was of cash when she got home and the zipped up her suitcase? I think she's planning on skipping town with the loot. She rolled her eyes when Bambi was trying to kiss her.

It also didn't occur to me that Wendy may be pregnant, but it does make sense that it could happen. It will certainly make Nepo focus on her.

I really didn't think Wendy was likely to be pregnant, but they made such a deal out of her being hungry for that sandwich (I don't even think it was a Subway commercial) that I wondered if it was an early hint.

I couldn't remember if Malave packing her suitcase happened during the episode, or only in the avances. What caught my attention was when she called the station to quit her job. It might have been smarter for her to wait till she was outside of Mexico (woohoo! Another bingo square for me if she makes it!) before doing that.
