Que Pobres Tan Ricos: San Ciprianito loses his groove; Ana Sofia does NOT have a drinking problem; Mike gets famous

  • "I'm going to kill you, tarantula!" Alejo growls as he chokes Minerva. She and her mom are playing a dangerous game. The mother wants to trade Mike's location in exchange for the entire house, which she has always liked. She disabuses Alejo: "He's not bonking Minerva, he has somebody else."

Minerva still thinks she can win Mike back and tells her mom she won't betray him. "But daughter, we have to think of ourselves."

Vilma thinks the "piranhas" are pulling a fiddle. Alejo snarls, "It's your fault, you let your laptop get stolen." He's willing to cede the house, eventually, because he does not actually own it, it belongs to the corporation. Vilma thinks he's as smart as Napoleon.

  • The celebration for San Ciprianito is going swimmingly and Ana Sofia, stoned out of her mind, is basking in the glory of this fiesta which she thinks is for her. "Thank you my Mexicans!" Tenderly Chuy leads her away and she leans on him, but soon she's back at the balcony orating, nodding grandly, and thanking the plebeians below.

The RP family, which had forgotten it was her birthday, explains, and Chuy kindly tells everybody: A great coincidence! With the permission of San Ciprianito, let us applaud Gacela and celebrate with her! She gets a huge mariachi Happy Birthday. "Nobody has ever sung me this to me in Spanish before, how folklorico! Lupita, your dad is a great guy!"

Grandma tells Mike: "Your mom has a big drinking problem, when she's sloshed she's more demented than I am."

Mike thanks Chuy for being so kind to his mom. Chuy warms to him - slightly.

AS staggers out giving the princess wave to all. She's having a grand old drunken time. Leo patiently steers her about, she's careening like an overloaded barge. She thanks some random stranger for bringing her flowers but when Frida shows up with a bouquet, AS drops it on the floor.

Frida says "You always ignore me," she goes off to sulk in the hallway. Tizoc comes along, whistling, and commiserates: "Our parents! They don't care what we think or feel."

AS grandly informs Mike: "My compassion allows me to celebrate with these poor people of the Nopalera, I will go to heaven." She tells Mike it's been nine years since he was last with her on her birthday, he was in London so long. She thanks him for being with her.

  • Nepo comes in and stares hard at Mike. Cut to commercial.

  • The Banana Prince asks Leo out on a date in the park. It won't be the Champs Elysee, but they could have churros or chocolate or ears of corn and then go to a zombie movie. Leo hems and haws and then says ok. But...

... Perla comes in with food for her beloved Diego. Leo leaves. She tries out her best swaying walk on Diego and points out that she's lost six pounds and has a wasp waist. "Remember that poem you wrote for me, about my mouth and eyes?" Diego tries to ooze away. She asks him to ask her out.

Enters Chuy. "What do you want with my daughter?" "We're just friends." Nepo comes in and proudly attests to his son having the best of intentions.

  • Nepo glowers at Mike some more: "You're a fugitive, and you're messing up the Menchacas' life. I don't trust you. I wanted to give you up to the police. You hurt Lupe or her family, you'll answer to me."

  • Ana Sofia, who has adapted some crepe paper ornament as a hat, says this was the most exotic birthday of her whole life, what a success it's been.

Now most of the people are gone and she notices the saint for the first time. Simultaneously Mike tries to talk to her about her drinking problem, which she denies furiously, and it's dawning on her that something else was going on here tonight besides her birthday. She gets so mad at Mike, she sort of has at him and they BREAK THE SAINT.

Chuy and family: aghast. Mike: get the glue. Ana Sofia: cannot stop thinking about herself. While the Menchacas mourn the broken saint, she is embarrassed that she thanked everybody for coming.

The reglued saint is not what he was: instead of hands piously pressed together in prayer, one points down and the other points sideways (I would have done a MUCH better gluing job). As the neighbors bid farewell to Saint Cipriano, they sense something's odd about him, but no matter, he is passed along to the next people who want them.

  • Lupita tells Emiliano his punishment will be over starting the next day, and that she is strict because "I want you to grow up good like Don Chuy." "Or why not, good like my dad! He is a good person, he wants all three of us to live together!" She makes a moue.

  • Alejo decides to hold a press conference and denounce Mike as a fraudster and a money launderer. The editorial Board of Old Dudes confirms that Mike is the criminal. "The police are on his tail," Alejo informs the press confidently.

Minerva tells Saul to tell Mike to run. Saul conveys the message and also says "We must stop talking so often, Mike, they may trace you through the calls." Too late, next day his picture is in all the papers and on the TV.

Nepo sees the newspaper and stares. Wendy sees the story on TV and screams in fear when Mike enters the room - the tv reporter had just said: "He is a villain and may be an assassin."

  • Poor Frida is getting it from all sides from the monstrous creeps at her school about her being not only poor but now the sister of a criminal. She calls Mike in tears and he says it will all work out. She says she loves him.

  • Lupe comes in to Wendy's and throws herself into Mike's arms. "Will they grab you?"

"What more will they accuse me of? I'm afraid of involving your family. I have to leave to protect you all, everybody who's helped us." "Now everybody knows the police are after you."

He says he's got to run and he's not egotistical enough to ask her to wait for him. She hits him and says she'll be waiting until it's cleared and he can come back. "That's - chido!" he says, cutely using this slang word (great!) for the first time.

Tomorrow: Isela gives him up and Minerva sticks him in the trunk of her car.

Jane, thanks for the great recap. Yes, you could have done a MUCH better job of gluing San Cipriano back together again! Very funny!

Good fun;

AS telling don Chuy she wanted to "acercarse a su calor" and laying her head on his chest.

Tizoc doing his imitations of don Chuy for Frida.

Perla flirting with Diego doing her "walk" and him asking her if she had to go to the bathroom because that is how she looked.

MA asking don Chuy if he could. "acercarse a su calor"
again and getting a better response this time: don Chuy said he had to think about it.

Don Chuy passing on San Ciprianito "just as they had received him."

Not so good:

Frida's humiliation at school.

Alejo's press conference.

Don Chuy still believing that MA stole the money that Nepo loaned them.

Jane:

This recap is awesome! You got the tone of it just right ; )

Watching AS is like a train wreck you can't stop looking at, even though you want to. She does need AA, the sooner she goes, the better off she is gonna be.

I too felt sorry for poor Frida. Enough of these mean girlz already!

So Isela is gonna sell MA down the river. I hope she's not successful.

Those "Zombies" at El Editorial were not happy with Ahole at all, they wanted to keep this fraud on the down low. It is gonna come to the point, and I can't wait for that, that Ahole is gonna step over the line and get caught in his own petard. Lupe is already sick of him and knows he is using Emi to get to her.

I had to laugh at Guendy and her hysterics, too funny. I am so glad that Carmelita is the voice of reason and hauled her off.

I wonder where MA is going to hide out now. That avance with the long hair looked funny, shades of Eva????

Carlos:

From yesterday when you were talking about the Ahole's gun. That's exactly the way I saw it. He used MA's gun after Adolfo was already dead, thinking that the cops would be too inept to look further. Little does he know, with this new cop, he is gonna keep digging till he gets the right answers, not like the Jen Gomez that thought MA was responsible for everything!

Chuy is showing his backbone and his heart as head of the family (which now includes the RPs) more and more, which I find splendid. He protects Ana Sofia, he chastises Mike as a wayward son, he has his eye on them all like a confident watchdog.

Jane- Excellent recap!

This was a mostly funny episode, between AS and the haphazardly glued saint. LOL! The saint's new hands almost made it look like a Hindu God/image.

Since AS doesn't accept that she has a problem, I'm not sure how affective AA would be right now. I really don't know how far she has to bottom out before she accepts that she has a problem.

I felt sad for Frida this episode-- between being made fun of by everyone at school, her mom ignoring her birthday gift, and the only person who pays any attention to her, MA, now being exposed and in more danger, she was having a crappy day.

Thank you, Jane. Wow, those must have been some great pills AS took. She is much nicer (and happier) with those than on alcohol alone. Unfortunately she is also even higher-maintenance.

I liked the reglued saint. He looked like he was doing an obscure martial arts stance.

Vivi, I felt bad for Frida's crappy day too, but I also felt that she picked an odd time to complain that her mother always ignores her. Her mom was stoned off her ass, even worse than usual.

I laughed the most when AS said it was the first time she'd ever gotten a Mananitas in Spanish. I didn't know you could sing it in any other language!

Responding to a comment from yesterday: Salvador, the police did investigate when Alejo shot himself in the pants. The hospital notified the police, and Ahole told them that he got hit in a drive-by shooting - and he said he was sure the shooter was sent by MA.

I don't know if the hospital recovered the bullet (prolly not; it should have gone right through and ended up in the ground), but you'd figure the wound itself would provide a major hint as to whether he got shot by a person at least several yards away from him - or at close range at an awkward angle from above.

Ahole's gun is currently in Vilma's possession, so if she ever feels like throwing him under the bus, she can do so at her convenience.

Thanks for the recap Jane.

Poor Frida. While not perfect and who is, she tries to do right most of the time. But its good she sees her "friends" as the horrible people they are now so when the RPs get their money back, she will know not to befriend them.

From yesterday, Marta you are right about Vilma not being able to see her abuse but its so sad to see Alejo treat her so badly. She runs back to him like a sad puppy and then rages on others. I'm holding out for when she finds out that Alejo killed Adolfo; hopefully, she'll take Alejo down then.

Julie:

I had the same thought about Vilma too, that she can throw Ahole under the bus. I hope she does ; ) Oh, good point about the angle of the gun when Ahole shot his jewels. The cops would have figured that out quickly, but Jen Gomez was already focused on MA and it just fed her theory that MA did it. I hope this new detective stays with this case, he seems to have more smarts than the Gomez' do.

Thanks for the recap! I loved the line about AS reeling like an overloaded barge. So apt!

Not sure HOW exactly poor San Cipriano ended up looking like Shiva when his hands were reattached, but it was hilarious. It was also funny when MA held up the little saint hands in that same gesture he does with his own hands all the time.

I also laughed when Perla was trying to get Diego to admire her new wasp waist and he asked if she had a bumblebee waist before.

Frida is learning some good lessons about her classmates who aren't real friends. What jerks. It's so hard to go to school every day being treated like that.

I wonder if AS is learning any of those same lessons, or if she would go right back to her viper frenemies who were so terrible to her at the wedding if the family gets its money back.

Maybe it's just my imagination or wishful thinking, but it seemed to me that the new detective took an immediate dislike to Ahole.

You are spot on Julie, I too saw the same thing. The detective can't stand Ahole. This detective doesn't like being steered around by Ahole that's for sure. When Ahole was pressing him to just arrest MA, that Detective told him when all the evidence is in we'll see, so he isn't going to be bamboozled by Ahole.

Thanks for the recap!

I, too felt bad for Frida. But I agree that at least now she can see that those people are not her friends and she'll avoid them when her family gets their money back. I do wish she would find some real friends soon though.

The reglued saint was funny! I loved how the people at La Nopalera were staring trying to figure out what was odd about him. Then when they were passing him on to the next family MA was telling them that they were passing him on just how they got him, he didn't fall and didn't break anything! Lupita had to shut him up!! LOL

So Diego and Leo are going out on a date! Leo tried to play hard to get but he agreed after all. It will be interesting to see how their relationship evolves from now on.

Jane thanks for the recap.

When I lived in Mexico City they used to have this celebrations and I remember being woken up on early Sunday monrnings by musical instruments while the people marched on the street in celebrations carrying their saint.

I loved AS thinking this was her birthday party. For a moment she lived her dream lol.

Julie:

"but I also felt that she picked an odd time to complain that her mother always ignores her. Her mom was stoned off her ass, even worse than usual."

I think Frida was just hurt that her mother dismissed her gesture and she probably wouldn't have shown it if AS was sober because then her mother would remember how vulnerable she was from her actions.

I liked the last scene with Lupita and Miguel Ángel. It was sweet.

Jarocha

I liked how Leo was leaning in and reaching as if to pick lint off of Diego's shirt, when oblivious Perla interrupted. It struck me as a bold move for someone who's supposedly "confused."

Jarocha, about the timing of Frida's comment, I meant that it was odd for her to expect any attention at all from her mother at that particular moment.

Though I guess it wasn't so odd, considering AS had just commented on someone else's flowers ("they're not orchids, but I appreciate the offer!"). She seemed much more interested in "my Mexicans" than in her own children.

In general, she takes her loved ones for granted while craving the admiration of strangers. What a miserable way to live.

Argh, I mangled that first sentence. I meant that I liked Leo leaning in, and that the leaning in was a bold move.

I did NOT mean to say that Perla showing up was a bold move. Heck, Perla showing up is just inevitable. I hope she gets a life soon. :(

Julie, I noticed that, too. It was an intimate gesture. I liked when Leo and Diego were doing the zombie impressions. They both looked happy and relaxed for about one second. Then Perla had to ruin it. How long can it possibly take her (and Chuy and Nepo) to figure out that Diego is NOT into her? (I originally typed "Nepo" as "Nope". Maybe that is more appropriate for him.)
