La Gata...coming soon...DQTQTQ team, phone home!

If you are on the DQ blogging team and want to stay on for La Gata, please write Blog Mom at caray@mappamundi.com and let her know.  Anybody else who's interested, also send her an email.

Here's what Univision has to say in their very own English about the upcoming La Gata, the replacement for De Que Te Quiero Te Quiero...

La Gata (The Stray Cat)

Esmeralda is a young woman who lives in the marginal neighborhood of La Barranca… a place where many live in abject poverty without the protection of a family. But there is hope. Esmeralda becomes friends with a young boy, Pablo, from a good family and they fall in love… a love that has to remain hidden… a love that is torn apart by lies and deception. But it won’t be long before love triumphs over all.

Cast: Maite Perroni (Cuidado con el Ángel) and Daniel Arenas (Corazón Indomable)

If you click on the link above, you'll find a video preview, narrated in English, in Hollywood movie trailer style.  I swear, they even goofed with the lighting.  This article from Latin Times adds only the detail that the "neighborhood" where Esmeralda lives is actually a landfill, something that was pretty obvious from the previews Uni has shown so far with Esmeralda driving a cart through said landfill.

According to Wikipedia, this is a remake of a Venezuelan TN of the same name from back in '68 and Rosa Salvaje, which aired in '87 (since Wiki is usually spoiler-y on their posts, I didn't read past the general description at the top of the page).

If videos aren't your thing, here's a picture of Maite (Esmeralda) and Daniel (Pablo):
cute, no?

Will you be watching?

I'll grant them their translation of "gata" to "stray cat" but also note that "gata" can refer to a woman who is perceived as having loose morals, one who is seen as belonging to the lower- or working-class, and/or a maid--and I'd expect to have "gata" used as an insult for her, probably by some crabby older person in Pablo's family, because it just wouldn't be a proper TN without classism.

The trailer, with English narration, was unintentionally hilarious. I was almost expecting to hear them call it "the feel-good telenovela of the year" or give a review from Ebert and Roper.

I'm not going to lie. I'm kind of excited about this one.

I'm sticking around for the early time slot. Their description is very generic, so I'm wondering if there's a twist or just the typical "poor girl meets rich boy" story.

I'll try because it is the early time slot but it has CI written all over it. Why didn't they just cast Ana Brenda instead of Maite. Dirty girl meets play boy.

I thought this one was a remake of CI, even though I never watched CI. The identical hair on the urchin and the same lead actor isn't helping!

Everything I've heard makes it sould like this will be short, though.

I'm looking forward to, but partly for the early slot.

sound not sould.

The identical hair on the urchin is why I may watch and comment.

Are they also going to discover that the poor "real" parent is wealthy at some point? Why don't they discover that the rich guy actually belongs to poor parents and they have to live poor after all? LOL

CI - redux (even the same dull galan) - thanks, but no thanks!

Love the theme song for this one but thats about it.

Anon at 4:30, I think it's pretty much a certainty that any telenovela "orphans" end up not only having living parents, but rich ones too. Unlike, I dunno, the comic book world where she'd become a superhero, but still be an orphan.

TomBoy, they've changed things up lately so that we don't get the theme song until a good 20 minutes into the show, but I remember fondly the days when they used to start right in with the full theme and credits right after the previous show ended.

tofie, It looks like the used the same small-barrel curling iron on both ladies. Because, as everyone knows, nothing says "urchin" like brushed-out curls. Once she's reclaimed by her rich parents, she'll start straightening her hair. *sigh*

Well, I survived CI , so I guess I will give this a shot. I only stay with wacky CI to read the funny, snarky recaps from our excellent recappers. I especially looked forward to Carlos's irreverent take on the madness and his hilarious captioned photos. Dirty Maite and Clueless Dan. Here we go...again ...same tune with a different leading lady, ...sin monkey. However, I like Maite , and Dan is okay. I hope that this actor is not being type cast...pretty face, nice bod but not much brain power. Let's hope that he is just a really...really...good actor. yeah..let's go with that.

Pierre Louis is in this. I want to see him again and I hope he's not a victim of editing.

TomBoy- have you seen some of this?

Wow, Kat you weren't kidding about that trailer. It was just the pick me up I needed and a good laugh.

I can't join you all on this one but will watching the recaps.

So passing on this one and especially since it is in the kiss of death time slot - 6 p. m. in my area and no good novela ever came out of that time.

It is a short one. I read it is supposed to end in October in Mex. It started back in May.

So about 100 episodes, Mauricio? That's awesome! I like short ones.

Susanlynn, yay! I really liked Daniel Arenas' work on Amorcito Corazon as Willie, and he seemed like a comedy natural. I don't know what he'll bring to this one, but I don't remember being particularly impressed with his work on Teresa in a non-comedic role.

Sara, oh yes, I forgot about Pierre Louis and the low number of episodes...both things very much on the "pro" list!

Karen, I didn't know what I was in for when I pressed "play" the first time and I'm really glad I wasn't drinking a hot beverage at the time!

Decie Girl, it's the 6pm slot here as well, and I'm used to seeing reeeeeally cheesy comedies at that time and turning up my nose at them. I'm actually surprised they're putting La Gata in this slot, but after tackling De Que Te Quiero Te Quiero I'm a little more optimistic.

Thanks for the info, Mauricio!

Kat, I had that hair. In the 80's

Sara - I tried watching this via internet but sadly stopped after the second episode.
Let's just say it's even worse than CI (and also very very similar).

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't see this as just CI redux. Sure there are big similarities, but I think it will be different enough.

Daniel Arenas was great as Willie and now that I'm rewatching Marimar on Hulu I realize that it was the CHARACTER that made him seem so terrible in CI. Sergio was pretty dense in Marimar, too.

I just can't say no to Maite. She is a favorite for me and my daughter.

The cast seems good on this one:
Laura Zapata, Erika Buenfil, Pierre Louis and Mariluz Bermudez (Marilu in MPV) and Jorge Poza.

How were the kids, TomBoy? I read somewhere that the young actors (meaning the kids playing the young Maite and Daniel roles) were good in the beginning.

It's probably best that I haven't watched any of the ones this is/looks like a refrito of. My snarking slate will be clean :D

tofie, my hair kinda looks like that now if I brush it out, but with less definition and less volume. It cracks me up that's supposed to be something of a "non-style" but I can tell it took a lot of work to accomplish.

If the wikipage is to be believed, Marcelo Cordoba and Monika Sanchez make an appearance!

Televisa would have to pay *me* to watch. I'm sorry folks, but my brain cells are limited and I'm not wasting them on this, nope, nope,no.

Sara - I have nothing bad to say about the young actors, they were good but the script was bad.
I actually really wanted to watch this but I still have goosebumps from my last 'fav' TDA and the wonderful CI.
I wish I knew then what I know now - never stick with the Mejia family. Ever.

Sara..I saw a special about Maite. She was singing and dancing for a music video. She is an excellent dancer and singer. I was impressed.

Lol, Eli...too bad they won't go for that!

But why Latina, whyyyyyy?! It would be awesome if they paid me, after all I'm giving their show good ratings!

I still wont watch tho, I'll read the recaps because I'm sure they will be gold but that's it. It's CI right down to the bad hair! Where can I find the English trailer for this?

Click on the first link up there, where it says "Univision."

Will do!

Hi, my name is Ian Ndegwa from Kenya and I just love this blog. I follow up on the recaps you guys have because apart from entertainment and the fact that I love telenovelas, Caray Caray also helps me because we watch many telenovelas from Televisa (but here its in english dub) and I have cretaed a facebook page for telenovelas airing on the station called Citizen TV. Of the moment we are doing Forever yours (Por Siempre mi Amor) Mondays to Fridays at 6 p.m.,Wild at Heart (Corazon Indomable) Mondays to Saturdays at 8 p.m. and The Tempest (La Tempestad)Tuesdays to Sundays at 10 p.m. In my facebook page, I post daily episode guides of the telenovela but since Caray Caray recappers follow the Univision trend, I want help with Forever Yours and The Tempest. If any one of the recappers could email me the right episode following, I would appreciate it very much. My email is barbietelenovelas@gmail.com. I want to know the episode that I read in Caray Caray is which episode in Mexico.

I just realized that I'M on the DQTQTQ team, so I should give you an answer about this. No, nope, nuh huh, no way, no how. I will not get sucked into recapping another tn from Nathalie. Recapping CI was enough for me.

Desire- It should be very easy for you to link our recaps for Corazon Indomable to your blog because the episode numbers followed with the Mexico episode numbers. Just go to the sidebar of the Caray Caray main page and click on the link to CI. The episode numbers should be in the title.

It will be harder for you to follow along with our recaps for Por Siempre Mi Amor and La Tempestad because here in the US the cut and combined the Mexican episodes, and so our numbering and episodes will not line up after a point if you are getting the full Mexican episodes in Kenya. Best of luck on your blog. How fun that you all get these telenovelas dubbed into English!

In addition to the deadly early time slot I am also concerned by the fact that this show was previewed some months ago as coming soon and then the promo's disappeared and some other novela took the slot I think MCET. Now we are hearing this is a short novela which is almost unheard of for Televisa. Add it all together for me it spells gigantic bomb.

The ratings have actually been good for the 4:15 time slot. It's actually doing better than La Malquerida.

Thanks....by the way I have a suggestion for Caray Caray. I have noticed that you guys also do recaps of Telemundo TNs and especially I loved La Patrona recaps (we watched it in Kenya on NTV in english dub with its international title The Return) and I know for a fact that Brazil Avenue (Avenida Brasil) aired on Telemundo. I know Brazil Avenue happens to be one of the most succesful Brazillian TNs of today and I would like to ask if you guys at Caray Caray can decide to recap Brazillian TNs, I would highly love this, and I am sure there would be more following than you alreday have now....Think about it. Just like you guys, I adore Televisa TNs and so if you do decide to take up my suggestion, Brazillian TNs from Globo International are the thing...Thanx

P.S. I saw Mauricio's post on Telenovela-World of La Tempestad episodes mexico style,,,,,If one of the recappers answers me, tell him to send me an email at barbietelenovelas@gmail.com. I need to talk to him. Thanx

5ft - thanks for the Uni trailer link. Based on the trailer, I wonder if the secondary title will be "Love at the Landfill". Yeeesh.
I might watch it from time to time.

fans of maite and Daniel arenas been looking forward for the la gata translating to English, ,and we are the fans that don't speak and understand Spanish ,but love to know and understand better.the story.fans will so much appreciate ..cant wait thank you all for the one who participated

Well, excellent! Sounds like we have some interest, if not in watching, then at least in reading the recaps.

Decie Girl, I agree, the schedule change made me pretty nervous, but I'm hoping for the best.

lol, Doris!

Intro after first break - when ADP first aired 2+ yrs ago

Marginalized end credits - a week or two before ADP ended, late October.

Uni was great back in the day. Now they're crap.

I might watch LG. It'll be short and sweet, and I have nothing else to watch...

I remember those days JoseAngel. I prefer the opening theme to be the first thing I see/hear and I actually like hearing the closing credit theme as well.

Anything with a theme sung by Vicente Fernandez...yes, please, put that on right up front! At least if I'm not watching the show, I could probably use a little Don Chente action before I switch to something else :D

Desire Ave Brasil was recapped on the Telemundo feed in the comments section. It was earlier this year.

I might change check this one out a little for Maitre and the lols but I'm a little more interested in La Malquerida. Ratings wise: in Mexico La Gata is doing better than La Malquerida but El Color dela Pasion is doing better than both, yet Esmeralda Pimental and Erick Elias have yet to grace my screen.

Cassandra G.

I've been watching La Gata online and I really like it. So far it's way better than CI. Daniel and Maite have awesome, mad chemistry, they seem like a real couple LOL. Also their characters are stronger than CI's and their love story is way better too, at least they're not seperated thru out the whole novela :D.

Thanks Anon! I was already on board, but hearing this I'm even more excited!

To all who are looking forward to this starting on Monday: Sara has graciously agreed to help me cover it. We'll be focusing mostly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays with a discussion thread on Wednesdays.

Of course, it's always fun to have more people on board, so if anyone else is interested in recapping, whether it be on a permanent or temporary basis, let me know at any time, either via the comments or through email (you can find the address in my profile).

We want la gata we want la gata,..why there's no translation in English ,from the beginning since June?.and the rating is good in mexico. From dannironi fans .usa bless all the heart of those who participate to transfer it in English thank you all very much..can't wait any longer !!!

We haven't covered it yet because in the US it is just starting tonight. Keep that in mind if you're one of the lucky ones who has started watching it already and don't reference anything beyond what has aired in the US.
