Qué Pobres, Lunes 8/18/14 (#160): «Permesso»

Not a whole lot of laughs this evening, but the best moment for me was when Tizoc said "Permesso" to AS.

Reruns:
Saul hitting on Rita; Trofeo spiking AS's coffee; Leo and Diego (who, I notice, is now leaving his shirt unbuttoned like Leo does); Ahole lies to Emiliano about making peace with Mati.

Isela insinuates to Mini that she's got something on Ahole.

New stuff:

Ahole tells Lupe that she can have her divorce, and sole custody of Emi, just as soon as he's reinstated as president of the Editorial. Lupe points out that this was their original deal and he reneged, so why should she believe him this time? He gets angry, recalling that Mati spoiled it the last time by showing up safe and sound. Then he recovers and remembers that he's supposed to be sad that Mati is dead.

Frida chats with Emi. She tells him that Mati is in heaven with her husband and her sons and Emi's grandmother Marce too. Emi tells Frida she'll be a great mom someday!

Isela and Minerva attend the wake. Mini is wearing a super-sexy dress; MA has to peel her off of him. Isela taunts AS about their rivalry to become president of the foundation. Three sheets to the wind and counting, AS calls Isela a rude bleeped name several times. (The Spanish captions don't say what it is; the English captions say "hag.")

Nepo arrives with a band to serenade Mati personally. (Is that really him singing? They should have had him sing much earlier.) Irked by Ahole's histrionics, Leo pulls him off of Mati's coffin so that he can sob on it himself. Ahole protests the "vulgar" music, not realizing (until MA informs him) that Mati loved this kind of music. Frida adds that this is what Mati would have wanted for her farewell party. Ahole dramatically pulls Leo off the coffin to resume his own loud outburst.

Saul corners Rita. He flirts with her; she tries to keep up with trite conversation. Gwendy watches, stunned, as Saul trots out all of his best moves at his best friend's grandmother's funeral.

In front of the former members of the board-of-zombies, MA tells Ahole, "not long ago, Mati said that Aureliano wanted to surprise us a few more times with new lessons to learn." Ahole replies, "how dare you mention the clause at our grandmother's funeral!" "Excuse me, but I didn't mention the clause. YOU mentioned the clause!"

MA thanks the zombies for attending and says the burial tomorrow is family-only. Ahole puts on a show for don Tulio et al. He tells MA he won't be at the burial. He can't take it. MA says that's no problem, because Mati wanted Ahole to take care of the divorce tomorrow anyway, so why not respect her last wish and stay away from the Menchacas forever?

Pretending to be needy, Ahole gets grabby with Lupe. MA tries to intervene and gets a passive-aggressive bear hug from him.

Saul is still flirting with Rita in the kitchen. Does she really not understand what he's doing, or should we just be grateful she isn't wiping the floor with him? He tries to hug her and she fends him off. He babbles awkwardly and she makes her escape. Gwendy tells Saul he's barking up the wrong tree.

MA thanks Chuy for the nice wake. He tells the Menchacas the burial is for family only, but "family" includes all of them.

MA asks for his mother. AS staggers in, drunk. She tells Mati's casket, "We had our differences, but...." (MA tries to cut her off, unsuccessfully) "...BUT you were the best mother-in-law I could have asked for." AS begins to sing, "St. Mati was the Queen of la Nopalera..." She even gets the entire assembly to sing along with her. Reluctantly.

Next day. The burial. I know I mentioned when I recapped Freddie's funeral for Una Familia Etc. that I can't deal with burials. Fortunately, there isn't much to this one. MA thanks Mati for loving them unconditionally and says her wisdom had no limits. Most of all, he's grateful for teaching the value of keeping the family together.

AS murmurs, "Along with Mati goes our last reason to be with the Menchacas. Hasta nunca."

At home, Ahole gloats to Oyuki. She asks him whether he'd like his "huevos" scrambled, or over hard!

Back at the cemetary, the are tossing dirt onto Mati's grave and this is usually the part where I theoretically need to be sedated (but only theoretically, because there's always someone who needs someone to stay with their kids, and it is on these sad occasions that I suddenly enjoy babysitting). Lupe worries that AS will say something to Chuy about Lupe's marriage to Ahole.

In fact, Chuy is telling AS how lucky they were to have Mati in their home and hopes they'll stay in touch forever. AS cuts him off, saying she hopes they need never get together again. She wants to talk about the clause, supposedly to get it over with once and for all. MA tries to interrupt before she blabs.

Frida saves the day by interjecting with her own news: "I'm going to be a mother, and the baby is Tizoc's." Ha, take that, AS! Now you're stuck with the Menchacas FOREVER!! Bwahahaha!!! (Sadly, that means they're also stuck with her.)

Tizoc is wearing sunglasses, but there's no mistaking his reaction. He asks about the preganancy test; why did Frida tell him it was a false positive? Frida says she wasn't sure at first, but now she wants to keep the baby.

Offended, AS asks how she, the person who gave Frida life, is only finding out about this now. "You've never noticed anything else happening in my life before, so why would I tell you about this?"

AS tries to make this about herself, but is unsuccessful. Leo accuses Frida of playing a mean joke to upset their mother. Frida admits that she had planned to give birth overseas, and then give up the baby for adoption.

At the fonda, Diego and Rita have another talk. Somehow she's heard about the fight at the park. She's proud of Diego and Leo for sticking up for themselves. She swears she's not being nosy, but she saw them together at the wake last night. Diego says maybe it was just a crush after all. Rita says if so, then break up; but if not, tell Leo the truth about how he feels. (Didn't Diego already have this same conversation with Gwendy several months ago, just before Acapulco?)

Diego says things with Nepo are okay. Rita says Nepo has always been stubborn like that, but he has a heart the size of the world.

Diego asks if the invite to go with her to the EEUU is still open. Maybe he'd like to study theater. She encourages him. He hesitates: "I should go check it out first and then decide." "As you wish," Rita replies. I don't think Diego ever heard those words from his father.

Back at the graveyard, Frida says Mati was the only one who knew about the pregnancy. She was going to meet up with Frida later when she had the baby. AS is angry to think that Mati would help Frida "cover it up," but Frida says Mati said something that changed Frida's mind.

"Since we're already in a cemetary, why not take the opportunity to bury me now?" AS complains. Leo lectures Frida about using protection, pretty funny from a guy who's had little or no occasion to worry about such things himself (he barely even kissed the Countess, and she passed out drunk every night that they went out). "Having a baby is the worst thing that could happen to us," AS declares. Now she will never be able to get away from the Menchacas. Chuy indicates that this is no picnic for him either.

At el cloob, Isela hints around about the foundation presidency. Beba and Chabelita change the subject to talk about Mati's wake/vigil out in the sticks. Isela tells them it was full of nasty low-lifes. But back to the presidency, how about if she donates more money? But not right now, because she forgot her checkbook!

At the graveyard, the grownups confer. AS tells Chuy it's Tizoc's fault, he took advantage. Chuy says it takes two. AS says Frida would never willingly with a guy "like him." Chuy: Tizoc will man up. AS: Oh you want them to get married or something? MA and Chuy say it's up to Tizoc and Frida, so let's see. AS beckons at MA, and for once MA says no.

Chuy complains to Carmelita about the kids. She warns him about his blood pressure. She says this is out of his hands, and he thanks her for the perspective.

Frida and Tizoc speak privately. Frida describes how confused she was at first, and how she considered "stopping it." She was afraid. But then Mati left her a letter:

Dear Frida, one never knows how much time one has left to live. I just want you to know that you'll never find the "perfect" parents to raise your child, because perfect parents don't exist. We all feel that we could do more for our children, and that's the very best part of being a parent. The only way to improve is to learn with the best teachers - our children. You may not believe it now, but you already showed me what a great mother you would be in your search to find the best for your child. Just realize that the best place for your baby is in your own arms. The love he'll get from you, his dad, and all his family will be the best protection ever. The decision is yours, but I ask you to think about this before taking the final step. All my love and blessings.

Tizoc takes Frida's hand and apologizes for not being there for her. She apologizes for being inconsiderate. They ruefully recall the wedding they hosted at the fonda when they were making fun of the pregnant bride.

Frida and Tizoc ponder whether they want to get married. Frida says there are lots of things to think about, and they don't have to decide now. Tizoc says, at least they both know they want the baby and they'll love him.

At the Editorial, Ahole is yelling at his zombies about how sad he is about Mati, and oh noes, we have to talk about the clause again! Don Tulio says they still have to make sure that every point of the clause was satsified. But there's no rush; they can wait for Ahole to mourn. Ahole says oh right, yeah, all he can think about is Granny. So how about Friday?

(I'm not sure why the zombies, all ex-shareholders, are still involved, or indeed why the clause is still in effect. Mati should have revoked it and she could have put anything else into place that she wanted. OK, sorry, back to our suspension of disbelief.)

Another zombie says that first, they should talk about something Mati said shortly before she died that has him worried: that Lupe didn't marry Ahole willingly. If the wedding was under duress, then it's not legal. Ahole swears that the wedding was voluntary, but Tulio asks, "Do your wife and son live with you?" Ahole can only repeat, "I swear it was by mutual consent. We have a nice and happy family and I can prove it."

Tizoc and Frida join the rest of the familia(s) in the house. Tizoc says he'll take care of Frida. AS laughs, "You haven't the faintest idea about raising a child." (Like AS does?) Tizoc says yes he does; his father taught him to act like a man, and he will. AS protests, "No grandchild of mine will grow up in some two-bit Nopalera greasy spoon." But Frida and Tizoc draw together, and Leo smiles at them encouragingly (or is he smiling at his mother behind her back, but I don't think so).

Frida mentions again that this is not way to talk about the people who sheltered them. Tizoc adds that the three kids his father raised in that "two-bit greasy spoon" are happier than the kids AS raised in her fancy home. And in fact, if it's up to Tizoc, they'll raise the baby in a house where they can ALL be with the baby. But anyway, he's facing up to this so that Frida and the baby aren't alone.

"Permesso!" Tizoc concludes, and leaves!

Later, at the fonda, Lupe tells Emi how much Mati loved all of them, and especially Emi, in this house. "So when are we moving in with Dad?"

Lupe replies, "If we ever leave here, it won't be to move in with him."

"I don't get it. You're married to him, so why don't you love him?"

Lupe tries to explain that it's not so much about how she feels, but that Alejo isn't who Emi thinks he is, and Emi doesn't really know him all that well.

And the little prince snaps, "Well, that's YOUR fault for not telling him about me! I could have grown up with him and played with him all this time! It's YOUR fault!"

Next Time: Family court. Emi is told to choose one parent over another. Will these five minutes in front of a judge cost him five decades of therapy?

Ha! I didn't think I'd do this till morning, but then I remembered that I have an appointment at 8AM tomorrow, an hour's drive away. So I thought I'd better put up what I have now.

I know I missed a little bit near the beginning, but I'll watch the part that I missed before I go to sleep and then patch that up later in the morning.

Isela was pretty funny, dissing Mati's wake, considering that she bundled Don Lauro's wake and funeral with his wedding.

A big thanks in advance for what I know what will be a wonderful recap and for letting us post before the recap.

My favorite part was AS all inebriated and emotional at doña Mati's wake saying she loved her and that she was the best mother in law ever.. Then there was her singing the San Ciprianito procession song with a new lyric: " Santa Matilde, eres reina de la Nopalera". She wasn't happy until everyone was singing with her. Too bad she had to revert to her nasty self for the rest of the episode. Later, her saying that they should just bury her since they were at the cemetery anyway because Frida was killing her was so typical. With only four episodes and the gran final left, will she ever change? Even MA blew her off at the cemetery and Frida later when she had been so mean to,Tizoc.

It was great seeing Tizoc telling AS that he was going to face his responsibility for Frida and the baby like a man.

So glad we got to know what doña Mati had written to Frida.

Jarifa

Julie, thanks for putting the recap ahead of getting your needed rest! Now that's dedication.

You're right about Isela putting down Mati's Nopalera farewell. That's pot throwing stones at the kettle.

Sometimes people aren't so well-behaved at these events (Ahole and Mini, looking at you.) I really enjoyed the two musical highlights--a serious one with Nepo's mariachi tribute and the comic one with Ana Sofi's sing along. They both made me smile.

Yay Frida! Past time to tell the family about her condition. Tizoc manned up and handled the news with a degree of grace. Liked Mati's encouragement to Frida.

Now we have to fight another round with Ahole's false, smarmy, and evil manuvering. Where's Vilma when we need her? Isn't it about time for her to see the betrayal?

Julie:

Thanks for this fabulous recap! Yes, that is really Arturo Peniche singing. He sang on Que Bonito Amor too, with a guitar and he was fab! He writes his own music too. I wish they had him sing earlier too.

I couldn't stand Isela and Mini at Dona Mati's wake. Mini crawling all over MA yet again. I wonder what AS was calling Isela? It was funny. AS' singing not so much!

I loved the letter that Dona Mati left for Frida. It said it all and I'm glad that Frida is taking the advice.

I was shocked that Frida told all at the funeral. That was very surprising but I'm glad she finally told. It's about time. I think MA and all the Menchaca will have her back along with Leo too. I think Leo was smiling that Frida stood up for herself and that this wasn't a stunt. AS only cares about yet, another scandal.

Ahole is on my last nerve. I hope that Dona Mati left more instructions and Ahole never sees the Presidency of El Editoral. I love the Zombies giving him hell.

Did Isela look a little nervous about another donation she wanted to make and just happened to have left her checkbook behind, hmmmm.....

I don't like what Emi said to Lupe at the end of tonight's episode and I don't like the avances either! I am looking forward to seeing what happens though.

I found this blog by accident while searching for the seasons finale August 24, Sunday time. I am so happy I found this too because I have a hard time understanding some conversations. I usually have to ask my sister. I am in agreement with everyone's post. I can't wait to see Alejo's fate. I hope Vilma spills the beans on him. I also hope that Isela tells what she heard but she's so greedy she will only try to use it to blackmail him. Well we have four more days plus Sunday left to watch this show. This is the only Novela I have watched from beginning to end. I'm a little sad that its ending. But there is so much drama upon drama. When one drama finish's here comes another. And what's funny is everyone has drama of some sort going on. But its what keeps us watching! lol....
Keep up the good writing and Ill be checking back again till it finishes on Sunday.
AnaG.

Welcome Ana G!

I do have more to add to the recap, but it will have to wait till later this morning.

OK done. Most or all of the new stuff is at the top.

Mads - yes, Isela looked a bit funny when she promised an additional donation. She probably doesn't have any cash left. Mini said last week that they were stock-rich but cash-poor. The helicopter probably wiped them out. Maybe Isela should have donated a camper to the foundation instead. It's not as sexy to show up for meetings in, but at least you can sleep in it!

Of course, if Isela is out of money, there's a simple solution: sell her shares!

Julie- I think Isela will blackmail Alejo about what she overheard, before selling her shares. She alluded to it with Mini.

Yay! Frida told everyone the truth. I was so proud of her and I loved the letter Mati wrote. I was not pleased that Tizoc kept his sunglasses on. Seems those should have been whipped off as soon as the words "I'm pregnant" left Frida's mouth. But, I give him a big thumbs up for the way he reacted and stepped up to the plate.

I would have thought that Chuy would have been better able to handle a teen getting pregnant since he already went through it with Lupe, but luckily Carm was there to help him deal with it.

AS continues to make it all about her. Only a few episodes left, if she's ever going to redeem herself. I'm doubting it.

I'm sure you're right about Isela, Vivi, but it's too bad she didn't sell her info to MA before Ahole killed Mati. She would have gotten a better deal since Ahole is more likely to just kill her rather than be blackmailed. And now Isela CAN'T sell her info to MA because she'll be blamed for letting Mati be murdered.

I think Chuy would have been less upset about the pregnancy if the other party had been anyone else. Chuy was extremely patient and courteous with AS through the entire months-long ordeal, but with Mati gone he just as eager as AS to put it all behind them. (Not that that was ever going to happen, since Lupe and MA are together now forever and ever, but it's looking ten times worse now that the youngsters are involved and there's a baby on the way.)

Normally I would think it a rather tacky for Frida to drop the baby-bomb right after Granny's funeral, but at least it kept AS from mentioning Lupe's marriage to Ahole. So, kudos for that and better late than never.

On the other hand, Chuy is almost certainly going to find out about the marriage eventually, and we're supposed to worry that it will give him a heart attack.

Julie, you finished on a roll!! Will these five minutes in front of a judge cost him five decades of therapy?
my fav moment was Frida and Tizoc giving it to AS face to face at her house saying stte of 'our baby will have two parents and more love than you ever gave your own children..' and Tizoc leaving and Frida giving AS the final touch 'toma esa!' (take that!)... or did I hear wrong?

Another fav was MA right there supporting Lupe all the way when A-hole was around... and a funny one was A-hole telling Don Telio that he was much older so he should have been the one that died... (Telio's face was priceless)

Tizoc and Nepo redeemed themselves. The rich socialites...still horrible.

Minerva may have another funeral in her future if Isela attempts to blackmail the sociopathic Alejo.

Rob

Ya know it's a wonder that Chabelita and Beba haven't run as the President of this Foundation. Chabelita especially, she's way hoity toiter than AS or Isela, I wonder, hmmmm.......

You heard that right, Marta. They did say "take that." I remember seeing it in my notes. So why didn't that make it into my recap? Because sometimes when I see something in my notes, I think that it's my own editorial comment rather than something a character actually said. Does this happen to anyone else? It's sort of like being unable to read your own handwriting.

Mads, I can only guess that Chab and Beba find it more profitable to pit the other women in the Foundation against one another to make ever-bigger donations. And the only reasons Beba and Chabelita would do that would be 1) because they care deeply about raising money for the Foundation's beneficiaries, or 2) they ARE the Foundation's beneficiaries.

Well, i've finally thrown in the towel with AS. I had hopes for her after the pilgrimage when she prayed to have her family together and around but she so obviously doesn't get it her fate will be what Mati told her - alone. With 6 and a half hours to go even she can't change that much.

Frieda certainly picks her moments. At your grandmother's funeral you drop the bomb that you're pregnant and to the local naco. I was surprised that AS didn't pass out. I did however laugh when Leo thought it was an unfunny joke designed to give mama a heart attack.

I liked the wzy Tizoc stepped up to the plate and his litte speech to AS that his father had raised three happy childen as opppsed to the one she had raised was spot on.

Emilhole is a brat. If I had ever talked to my mother like that I would have been given a good slap and maybe that is what he deserves instead of all the babying and talking that Lupe dishes out.

OMG if Saul's' move on Rita is part of his technique no wonder he is all by himself. It was cringe worthy on so many levels. I do wish that Gwendy had been a little clearer when she warned him off because I don't think subtle get through to him.

Julie:

It happens to me. When I take notes, I too think it's something I thought and not what was said. I tend not to look down when I take notes and then can't read what I wrote later, lol.

That's a good idea about Chabelita and Beba, I think you are right, they are the Foundation's recepients. Maybe that will be exposed before the end of this TN. Just a theory.

Thanks Julie, it's hard to believe we're so close to the end and there are so many ends to tie up. This makes me the most mad about how TNs go. Everything that has been building up for 160+ shows will be resolved in one 2 hour finale, leaving us no time to enjoy the happy ending. I can see the last 15 minutes, Alejo somehow gets found out about the bad things he's done, Emiliano finally sees his dad as a bad guy, Frida and Tizoc decide to get married, Lupe and MA decide to get married, Leo and Diego go to the US together with Rita. The End.

I'm still clinging to a shred of hope that Mati isn't really dead. It was a closed-casket wake, after all.

OK, so it's outlandish, but no more outlandish than the rest of this silly story.

If Isela seriously thinks she's going to blackmail Ahole, then she should probably pick out her casket today while she has the chance. Wait, didn't I already say something like that? I did. I'm just finding it very difficult to envision a fate worthy of Ahole at this point. But I think it will be enough for Mini and Isela to end up poor and humble.

now i am wondering what is it that is still 'unknown' about Aureliano's will/final wish that both Mati and MA alluded to... it cannot be the Million Dollar thing for Chuy because of the Fonda, could it?

I would say Beba and Chabela being the 'ultimate receiver' of all the charity donations is not too much of a stretch, given their reaction every time either AS or Isela mention making a donation that will surpass the other...

I'm sooo looking forward to watching MA find out the truth about how Dona Mati really died.

When he finds out that Ahole killed her, Ahole better watch his back.

I'm curious as to whether Chabela and Beba are doing it legally (like somewhere in the foundation charter it says that the money goes to them, but none of the other foundation ladies have ever bothered to read it), or are they doing it illegally. If the latter, perhaps they can be friends with Vilma in jail. LOL.

As for the "unknown" thing, I have always assumed that there would be more "clauses" that could get activated by one thing or another. I'm pretty sure there's still an unrevealed detail about the million dollar bonus for the Menchaca home - I don't understand why they haven't claimed that yet - and maybe there are additional clauses in Mati's will, too.

Some months ago, I did a little (very little) research on what you can and cannot put in a will in the US. Some things are difficult to nail down because of variations in state laws, etc. but one definite thing was that "you cannot leave a gift that is contingent on the marriage, divorce, or change of religion of a recipient." But you can place some conditions like "to Jeremy, if and when he goes to college."

The article didn't mention anything, one way or another, about making someone's inheritance conditional upon their having kids. Obviously you can bequeath something directly to your grandchildren, but it seems to me that if you can't make a bequest conditional upon someone's marital status then you shouldn't be able to make it conditional upon their reproductive accomplishments either.

I don't know what you can do under Mexican law, or if it's even comparable. But eccentric people in fiction don't let little details like that get in their way.

I will laugh if Chabela and Beba are just living off of what Isela and AS have given to the association, and have no money of their own.

Julie:

That is very true about wills here in the U.S. But one of the Zombies mentioned this to Ahole too, so maybe it is the same in Mexico. I think Ahole's plan, not a spoiler, just a theory to coerce Lupe to moving in with him to make it seem as if they are one big happy familia to satify the Zombies. There was a scene on Friday, as part of the avance, where MA was there too when they were talking about this. I hope it isn't something they skipped over and will air that too. The Zombie's have Ahole's number and would tend to believe MA. I really want Ahole to get his comeuppance. It's been long overdue. Or I just thought of something else. Dona Mati ordered Ahole to report to Saul and sign those divorce papers, and if MA wanted to, he could bring Saul in as a witness to what Dona Mati said, now that would be great and show up Ahole as a lying liar that lies. I too hope that Dona Mati left something in writing somewhere about this divorce with Ahole. I too wonder what happened with that million dollars due the Menchaca? Maybe there are waiting for the grand fin for that.

The fact that Lupe and Tomas initiated divorce proceedings against Ahole should be evidence enough that Lupe doesn't want to be married to Ahole, even without Saul as witness. So it's already been documented through legal channels that Lupe is not a voluntary and happy spouse.

Honestly, I don't see how Ahole has a leg to stand on. He should just admit defeat now, and evaporate in disgrace.

Emiliano needs to be put up for adoption, or taken into the woods and left there without a compass.

Who should suffer?
Alejo, definitely!
Vilma? She's already suffering and she brought it on herself.
AS? It's time for the other kids to do what MA seemed to do at the funeral and just walk away from her. They should have done it long ago! Leave her with the big house, lots of money, and her phony friends.
Isela, Mini? They haven't given me any reason to root for them. I guess they deserve each other.
Nepo? Looks like he is not going to be punished for all his ugly behavior thanks to Guendy. I guess I can live with that.
Who am I missing?
Who should be rewarded? Right now I'm thinking of Marta, Madelaine, Julie and Jane. Thank you for all those weeks of faithful reporting. You are great!

How long before people find out that Ahole killed Dona Mati ?

It's dragging this stuff out is annoying.
