Weekend Discussion: Music

What music do you love?  Are you into classical, jazz, Latin, World, etc?  Do you go to live performances or do you just listen online or to recordings?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Labels:

Comments:
I will listen to almost anything, though I tend to stick with Latin music. Most of the time I get my "recommendations" from TNs.

In the car I either listen to the siriusxm channels Caliente (tropical, salsa, bachata) or el Águila (banda, norteña etc)

Just bought the Juan Gabriel album Los Dúo after hearing the Alejandra Guzman duo version of Caray.

I would love to hear what Latin music others recommend.

Jazz wise I'm a Vince Guaraldi and Brubeck fan.

My favorite kind of music is smooth jazz!

I love classic rock, and that is what I listen to in the car. I also like current singers..Pitbull, Maroon Five,Pharell, Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum. Hub and I go to a lot of concerts. I also enjoy classical music.

Hmm. I think my comment got eaten.

Except for Latin music, I don't know anything after 1977. I don't know who anyone is after that.

Love Bollywood soundtracks, classic rock, classical, blues, country, and opera.

Wow, what a great topic Urban.

I love all kinds of music: current pop, rap, country, urban, latin, classical, jazz, blues, rock, world and more! I love it all. It has been a while since I have been to a concert. My favorite place to listen is in the car. Currently in the car I have Swan Lake, Jesse y Joy, Grammy Nominations of 2015 and 2014, the soundtrack to "The Best Two Years", Now That's What I Call Music #53, and Ella Fitzgerald. I sometimes sing along. :)

Jarifa

Currently in my car I have Sarah Brightman, Adele, Jewel, soundtrack from Burlesque, Van Cliburn and Ravi Shankar

Sara..I still see your first comment. It was not eaten...still here.

Love Ottmar Leibert. I just missed him in concert..darn. The guy can play guitar.I was introduced to his music by a lawyer from Mexico who was my student a few years ago. Check him out.

What's great about this topic is that we can get recommendations for artists for music we love as well as be introduced to new kinds of music.

Kendrick Lamar!

My favorite artists include Anita Baker, Boney James, Duke Ellington, Kuh Ledesma, etc.,

I like most any kind of music except improvisational jazz but I only got into Latin music when I watched Rebelde. RBD started the ball rolling and now I love Jesse y Joy, Alejandra Guzman, La Oreja de Van Gogh (although the old lead singer was better than the new one) Mana (basically the Mexican version of U2) Moderatto (they have a great sense of humor, or maybe I'm misunderstanding) Gloria Trevi, and Alizee (although she's French, not Latina)

Nanette,

Could you recommend some good Bollywood sound tracks/music?

thank you!

Fatima

Older mexican artists like Augustine Lara, Javier Solis, Trio Panchos, Lola Beltran,Manzanero.
Older Tejano like Joe lopez w Mazz
Stevie Ray Vaughn, my fave. Hank Williams, West Side Horns from. San Antonio,Towerof Power
Motown greats, all of them.
Adele, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston
Nice to read about everyones taste in music. Thx for asking Urban. What are your favorites?

Classical, jazz, Latin, and world. I don't listen to as much rock as I used to (and at that it's classic rock), and I've gone almost totally classical and opera lately.

Which is a very expensive addiction. However, since many opera stars lately are starting to look like the characters they play, it increases the comparison to telenovelas!

I'm trying to learn several languages at the same time, so I keep listening to artists in that language. For Spanish, I like Alejandra Guzman. Portuguese, Caetano Veloso and Claudia Leitte. italian is Laura Pausini, who records her albums in Italian and Spanish! Lately I've been studying German, so I've been listening to "schlager" music, which is almost like disco, and my favorites are Helene Fischer and Linda Hesse.

But my two favorite types of music, which I've loved for years, are bluegrass (Rhonda Vincent) and opera (current favorites are Angela Meade, Diana Damrau and Jonas Kauffmann, but I like all kinds of operas and opera singers).

Fatima: have some boring work stuff to get out :(, then I'll send you that list. :)

Fatima:

I haven’t seen a Bollywood movie since My Name is Khan) in 2010 so my picks are of older movies. 99% of my Bolly DVDs and soundtracks are Shah Rukh Khan movies (he’s my favorite male actor).

Here are some of my all time fav soundtracks (order is alphabetical):

Baadshah
Don: The Chase Begins
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
Kabhi Kushie Kabhie Gham…
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Main Hoon Na
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Non-SRK movie soundtrack I love:

Salaam-e-Ishq (Bollywood version of Love, Actually).

I highly recommend going on You Tube and checking out the vids for songs. The dancing is amazing. Here are some of my favs:

"Bole Chudiyan" (Kabhi Kushie Kabhie Gham…)
"Say Shava Shava" (Kabhi Kushie Kabhie Gham…)
"Tumse Milke" (Main Hoon Na)
"Ishq Kaminaa" (Shakthi: The Power)
"Salaam-e-Ishq" (Salaam-e-Ishq)
"Chaiya Chaiya" (Dil Se. . .) (iconic in Bollywood world. The choreography by Farah Khan is based on the rhythm of the train. Amazing).
"Dola Re Dola" (Devdas) (this number stars the two best dancers in Bollywood history: Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. MD is considered the best ever and I recommend seeing all her dance performances in this movie).

Nanette

Nanette, Thank you SO much! Before changing jobs, I had time to take Zumba classes regularly. Now, I am lucky to make to the grocery store on a regular basis.

Anyway, they used Bollywood music in class and I LOVED it! I will go look all of these up and see what I find. I wish I could take a class in Bollywood dancing. One of my Zumba instructors taught a Bollywood class, but it was over a 2 hour drive one way to get there which was absolutely out of the question for me. I loved it every time she taught class.

Thank you, Nanette!!!

Fatima

Hombre de Misterio, I've just returned from the Met where I saw Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Florez. You would have loved this.

Fatima: you're very welcome. I'm taking a Bollywood dance class. It's awesome! Our instructor is Indian and is trained in all kinds of Indian dances. Makes a difference. I've taken other Bolly dance classes with non-Indian instructors which weren't nearly as good.

Nanette, I saw the "Dola re Dola" on You Tube last night. I LOVED the dancing and I got a real kick out of how they would show the handsome dude with the mustache chomping on something and looking in on the action. VERY sexy without any clothes being ripped off. I rather liked it! :)) Sometimes, the "suggestion" is much sexier to watch than the "action" itself.

That is great you are taking a Bolly dance class. I will look closer to home and see what I can find.

Fatima

Oh, Fatima. There's a whole different story behind those looks!

Fatima: can't wait to hear what you think of "Bole Chudiyan". It's my fav.

Thanks so much for reminding me about Ottmar Liebert! I use to listen to him a lot. Just added him to my Spotify Playlist. Love Spotify.

Urban
This is a great discussion, and one where you can pick up new ideas for music listening based on other's recommendations.

I'll give away my age if I say my first concert was The Monkeys; and my last Janet Jackson -- Rhythm Nation.!

Novella lover
Thanks for the recommendations for Latin Classics. I just downloaded a bunch of José José, based on hubby's recommendation. Can't wait to listen to those on your list.!!

That's one thing I love about telenovela watching ! It expands one's musical education and appreciation. Since returning to novela watching, my world of Latin Music listening has expanded multi-fold.

Since we lived overseas for many years the opportunities for concerts were limited to those artists who performed at the hotel, like Julio Iglesias in his prime.

I envy those of you who have had such great opportunities for concert going. e.g., Alejandro Fernandez (looking at you Urban)

I like anything except Hard Rock, Punk Rock, Metallica, and Rap.

Give me Classical, 70s and 80s Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz, and Pop any day of the week.

Cristian Castro, Juanes, Alejandro Fernandez, David Bisbal, Camila, and Pablo Alboran, just to name a few.

Anxiously awaiting the time to get started on everyone's recommendations. Great topic, thanks Urban.

Nanette!!! I LOVED "Bole Chudiyaan"!!

The dresses are beautiful and I WANT one! :))

Urban Anthropologist:

You must have seen La Donna del Lago. I'm going to see it on March 14th at the Met! I bet it was wonderful. You're lucky to live in the NY area (I'm guessing). I live in Baltimore, but still go to the Met several times a year.

Victoria: Love the Monkees!!!!

Fatima: "Bole Chudiyan" is a feast for the eyes and ears!!!
