La Sombra del Pasado #8 2/26/15 The Flames of Love

Boy, I'm going to be suffering from performance anxiety with this show. So much happens! Not just the lines being said, but facial expressions and body language. And I suck at subtleties. I will not be able to do justice with what happens on screen.

As soon as Cristobal tells his mother that his relationships are his business, she starts badmouthing Aldonza and Roberta. Candela explains that he hasn't lived in Santa Lucia so he doesn't know what a brazen hussy Aldonza is...just like her mother! Cristobal would prefer to decide for himself whether Aldonza is a hussy or not. Candela asks him if he is aware of what Roberta does for a living. She doesn't directly call Roberta a prostitute, but in my book when you say "she earns the few pesos she does doing favors for men" you might as well just come right out and say "she's a prostitute." Cristobal has a spine and tell his mother that he'll form his own opinions that not let gossip influence that decision. Roberta may be just what Candela says, but that doesn't mean Aldonza is the same. Isn't her uncle a priest? Cristobal is not going to let Candela or anyone else decide who he can and cannot be friends with. Candela can't believe he walks out and leaves her con palabras en la boca (which I will loosely translate as "in mid-browbeating.") She follows him out into the hall way to continue her tirade. This brings Severiano (Sever) out of his room asking what is going on. Candela tells him that Roberta and Alodonza have already managed to turn Cristobal against her! She runs after Cristobal.

Cristobal is out the front door and runs into Valeria. He drags her away to a hiding spot and shushes her. He hugs her to him (oh, not smart...) He explains that if his mom gets a hold of him she won't let go. Valeria wants to apologize to him. She explains that she told her mother about seeing him and (she "struggles" to remember the name) Aldonza, but she swears she didn't realize it was going to cause so much trouble. It was you! Cristobal declares and leaves yet another female con palabras en la boca (which I will loosely translate this time as "mid-fake apology.")

Lola and Melesio are checking the stables and she's asking a lot of questions about Severiano's accident. Melesio confirms he was working as Las Animas at the time. Melesio didn't see it and Sever was alone when it happened. The horse got excited (se alebrestó), Sever fell and hit an alado (plow) and lost his arm y ya. What's with the morbid curiosity anyway? (¿Por qué andabas de morbosa?) He warns her not to go around asking those kinds of questions. Lola wants to know if Sever is as good as folks say. Melesio says he's go his temper, but he's respected. Lola tells him that didn't really answer the question now, did it? (I like this one. She's a firecracker!!) Lola is just wondering why Aldonza's mom is always badmouthing him (hablar pestes) and even his own wife doesn't seem to like him. Melesio tells her to mind her own business.

Cristobal goes to see Aldonza. He wants to talk to her. Aldonza tells him if he came to giver her a hard time about hitting his mother, he can forget it. He really just wants to try to clear things up. What happened to being friends? Aldonza says that it's better that they not be friends and Cristobal doesn't think "just because" is a good enough reason. He tries (again) to get an invitation for coffee and is denied (again.) Aldonza doesn't want to get in trouble with her mother. Cristobal is eager to clear things up. He tries a stronger tactic. He will ring the bell until her mother comes to the door. That gets Aldonza's attention and she agrees to go walk with him. She tells him not to knock on the door she's just getting her coat.

Lola notices Sever's horse is not in his stable...

...because Johnny Trash(™tofie)...er... Sever is out and about and if the Jaws-like music is any indication, he's up to no good! He seems to be checking out the leaves in a melon field. (See? I just totally ruined that scene. It was so much more menacing than I made it sound.)

Humberto tends to Candela's nose. It's not broken even though it bled like crazy. She changes the subject to Cristobal. Humberto thinks she's making a mountain out of a mole hill (ahogando en un vaso de agua), but she disagrees. Cristobal is just like his dad-stubborn! Once he gets something in his head he won't let go of it. Humberto says that just because Cristobal and Aldonza exchanged a few words doesn't mean they've fallen in love! She says she would feel better if Cristobal would spend time with a different type of woman...like Valeria for example. Humberto says he'd like that, but it's their business. Candela tells him about Emmanuel's visit requesting work. Luckily Sever wasn't home, she says... but Humberto can imagine why doesn't doesn't want Emmanuel around, right? Humberto understands perfectly.

Adelina looks for Aldonza. She finally sees her from the window. Aldonza is outside with Cristobal explaining that is was Cande who sought HER out, NOT the other way around. Aldonza just opened the door and THWACK! Cande insulted her and she wasn't going to just stand there. Aldonza is annoyed that now the gossip is that she was flirting and sweet-talking him. HE was the one that came onto private property. Cristobal isn't there to argue about who started it. If I understood correctly, he pretty much believed that yes, Cande started it. He only took issue with force Aldonza hit Cande with. "You almost broke her nose!" he tells her. Aldonza apologizes but says from now on Cande think before laying a hand on her. Cristobal agrees that if someone came to his house and insulted him and slapped him, he would have broken their nose. He apologizes for his mother. They both agree they are tired of the attitudes of their families. Aldonza thinks it best they just leave things as they are and Cristobal says they are going keep being friends. Aldonza asks him "Oh, I don't have any say in this?" (YES! Go girl, don't let him go around giving orders!) Then he very charmingly says "no" and the feminist in me just doesn't know what to do. (That smile!!) Aldonza tries to explain that they are in separate circles and he should hang out with people more like him...like Valeria. He wonders why she thinks he should be with her, but he stops in mid sentence. He sees the fire. Aldonza turns around and sees it too. Aldonza panics. The huerta (garden doesn't do it justice, so I'm going to go with crop...specifically melons) is aflame! It's her only asset (another meaning for patrimonio)! She heads for the field.

Roberta is looking for Aldonza and accuses Adelina of covering for her. Adelina suggests that Aldonza is with Lola. Roberta isn't buying it. If she finds out Adelina is lying to her she's not going to be happy. God knows Roberta has suffered and she doesn't want that for her daughter. Adelina says she's number one on the list of folks who don't want Aldonza to turn out like her mother (really loose translation.)

Melesio is waiting for Sever. He noticed that Sever was out and he thought he might need some help. Sever reminds him that his capable of taking care of the horse, even with one arm. Melesio kind of tries to get some info. "Oh, I was just worried because it was late and I couldn't imagine where you were. I was worried something may have happened." And Sever responds without giving anything away. "Surely a man can go for a ride whenever he wants? What could happen? He's on his own hacienda, isn't he?"

Aldonza and Cristobal try to fight the fire, but with little success.

Humberto scolds Emmanuel. The boy had no business going over to Las Animas. It just bothered Candela. Why did he go there? Emmanuel says if you want work, Las Animas is the place to go. Humberto still doesn't understand. What does he want to work. Emmanuel explains he wants to make his own money and DUMBERTO still doesn't get it. They give Emmanuel everything. He's just like any member of the family. No. No he's not. He's calling you "Doc" not "Dad", not even "Tío." Emmanuel reminds him that Valeria and Prudencia sure don't seem to think he's part of the family. I am not amused by Humberto's "don't pay them any mind. They're just being women." Why don't you just say they are clucking hens? *grumblegrumble* My feminist side knows EXACTLY what to do with THAT statement.

Aldonza is still trying to fight the flames, but it is a lost cause. Cristobal tries to convince her to go to his house and get help. As he tries to get her to leave, he injures his ankle.

Meanwhile, Candela has entered Sever's room. He even comments that it's been years since she crossed his door. She is not there because she wants to be. She's worried about Cristobal. He's not back yet. Sever doesn't get what she's upset about.
Cande-this is the first time he's ever talked to be so rudely!
Sev-(dripping with sarcasm) NO!
Cande-besides, he walked away from me and I was still talking to him!
Sev-(drenched in sarcasm) Oh! That's VERY serious!!
Cande- He's probably with that...desgraciada.
Sev- Well, she is good-looking. What bothers you most--that he's running around with the girl you hate most in the world, or that he's not doing everything you tell him to?

Sev seems pretty pleased that Cristobal is standing up to Cande and not giving in to her every whim. The boy is starting to break out of his enclosure (a horrible translation of salir de redil) and Sev is thinking he should start doing the same. Puh-leeze, Cande retorts. He's had a green light to do whatever he wants for years. She's sure any man would be happy to have the liberties he's been given. Sev says most men have a wife who will fulfill thier obligations. He's tired of trying to get her affections. She tells him it's sure as hell not going to happen now that he's been sleeping with who knows what for years. She's going to go wait for Cristobal. At least she is worried about him. I swear Sev checked out her ass as she turned to go.

Aldonza is still dealing with the injured Cristobal. She manages to get him off the ground and they don't let a fire stop them from staring at each other passionately.

Humberto asks Emmanuel not to look for Sever. Emmanuel wants to know why it bothers Humberto so much that he approached Sever. Humberto just doesn't want Sever to think that he's (Humberto) looking for favors.

Cristobal and Aldonza make it out of the fire.

Joaquin informs Adelina of the fire. Adelina is forced to tell Roberta that Aldonza was out walking with Cristobal. Roberta flies into action and asks Adelina why she didn't tell her earlier!! The three adults run to the fire and call out for Aldonza. Suddenly Roberta thinks there is someone who can help and she runs off as thunder booms and Adelina conintues to call for Aldonza.

Padre Geronimo talks to Banker Uriel over coffee. Padre asks for more time but the banker doesn't think that's going to help since interest will accrue in the interim. Roberta will just end up owing more money. She should just sell the land. The banker knows that Sever can make a good offer. Padre G doesn't want her to sell. His parents worked that land. He and Raymundo grew up there. It's his niece's birthright. Uriel was friends with Raymundo. Surely he can help. The banker agrees to try to see what he can do.

Roberta has gone to Las Animas and what a scene she makes! Cande wants to know why the hell she's there as Sever finally comes downstairs. And oh he is not happy when he finds out that Roberta's fields are on fire and that Cristobal was probably out there with Aldonza! (Looks like he burned his nose to spite his face!) He starts yelling to get everyone moving.

Oy. My recapper's nightmare: Thelma Madrigal and Cynthia Klitbo. I love you both ladies, but I do have trouble understanding you. Anyhoo. Valeria is upset. She knew her mom's love for gossip was going to cause a problem. Prudencia thinks she's exaggerating. Valeria complains about her mother's big mouth. Prudencia explains that in small towns gossip spreads like...er...wildfire. It was just a matter of time before someone saw Aldonza and Cristobal together and told Cande. Valeria tells her not to try and get out of it. Prudencia was the blabbermouth and Prudencia was the one that started the trouble. Prudencia concludes that Valeria is upset because she's quite interested in Cristobal. Valeria concedes that she is interested. Very interested. He's hers and she'll whatever she has to get him. Pru smirks with victory.

Cande is afraid. Lola tries assure her that Aldonza and Cris will be fine. Cande doesn't want to hear it and starts badmouthing Aldonza. It's all her fault. Lola vigorously defends her friend. It's not true that Aldonza was flirting with Cris! Dominga tries in vain to shut.Lola.up. Lola finally gets talked into making tea and Dominga suggests to Cande that they pray.

Sever's men show up to fight the fire. Sever also orders them to find his son.

Aldonza has helped Cris to the waterfall. They look back and see that the huerta continues to burn. But there is a crash of thunder! It begins to rain! It's raining! It's raining! Aldonza is ecstatic and hugs Cristobal.

The volunteer firefighters also rejoice.

Aldonza cries that the rain has saved them and Cris declares the rain has never made him so happy. It arrived just in time. They kiss. *I* say she kissed him, but she swears later he kissed her. It's probably a tie. NO. I just watched it again and damn I swear she moved in first. Let us savor this kiss. *sigh* Romance on a TN. It's not dead and my faith has been restored. I will watch this over and over this weekend.

Aldonza comes to her senses and says she doesn't want to. Cris fires back that her lips say something different. Damn. Again, my inner feminist doesn't know what to say about line 'cause it was so hot. She tries to explain that her mother would kill her and Cristobal gets frustrated. She reminds him that her aunt and her mother are all she has. She's lost her father. She asks him to try to understand. She knows what they say about her mother. "And does it matter to your mother?" Cristobal asks. Aldonza admits it doesn't. Cristobal tells Aldonza that her mother lives her life for good or bad. It's her choices and her life. Aldonza can do the same. She can live the way she wants and not worry about what others say. Aldonza tells him that most of the folks in town don't think that way...especially HIS family. Well that's their problem he responds. He makes his own choices and he's going to love who he wants. Living your own life doesn't mean you are showing disrespect to your family. He's not going to contain himself and he's going to say how he feels. He can't stop hugging her. He can't stop kissing her. He can't let LA SOMBRA DEL PASADO direct their destiny and separate them. He's always going to be by her side and he's never going to stop fighting. Trust him. He's never going to stop loving her. This that they feel, being under the rain, and not feeling it...this is real. They kiss again.

Dominga is in the kitchen with Lola and scolds her for talking back to Candela. Lola doesn't see why Dominga can do it and she can't. Dominga reminds her that she's known Cande since she was a baby (you clean someone's diaper and you can say whatever you want IMO.) If Lola doesn't want to to hear folks say bad things about Aldonza, she's going to have to move to another town...another planet even. Dominga tells her to follow her example and keep her mouth shut. Lola swears she tries to, but her mouth won't listen. Dominga tells Lola to stop baiting Candela (poner mosca.)

Aldonza and Cristobal hear the cries of the adults and start heading back to the field. She tells him to always lean on her. The adults come running. Sever orders Melesio to help get Cristobal to the truck.

Pru swears Cris came back to town for Valeria (these two are definitely reading a different script.) Pru bets her fake eyelash there's soon to be a bodorrio (which wordreference says is a rowdy party, a bordijo, a boda desigual...that will go over well with Candela, don't you think?) Humberto is not 100% on board with the idea of a Cris/Valeria pairing. He doesn't want yet another thing that brings them closer to Sever. Pru reminds him that Sever helped Humberto get out of the hole he dug for himself. Pru calls herself the conscience of the family. Humberto offers that in his town they called it something else...but he doesn't elaborate. He tries the "but they're cousins" argument, but Pru says the are DISTANT cousins. Humberto thinks it's between the kids. It's not Pru and Humberto's business. Pru thinks it wouldn't hurt to light a candle to Saint Anthony (the matchmaker saint...who knew?) If Cris and Valeria fall in love, all the water of el Santuario won't be able to put out the fires of their passion.

Aldonza and Roberta arrive home. Joaquin is barely out the door before Roberta rushes for Aldonza. What was she doing in the fields with Cristobal Mendoza. She promised she would have nothing to do with him!!! Aldonza tells her she didn't do anything wrong. Roberta will not tolerate her acting like a....

...like you? Aldonza asks. How am I supposed to act with you as my role model? She runs upstairs and Adelina keeps Roberta from following. Roberta wants Aldonza to have nothing to do with a Mendoza. Adelina thinks Roberta is jumping to conclusions and if Adolnza is seeing Cristobal, forbidding her to have anything to do with him is a sure fire way to guarantee Aldonza will run to his arms. Roberta thinks Adelina is just trying to cover up for her nice. Adelina just wants them to handle the situation the right way. Not with yelling and threats. For once in you life, she says to Roberta, don't just react with what you're feeling. Let Aldonza rest.

At La Animas, Cristobal is carried in while his mother frets and blames Aldonza. Candela grabs the phone, but Sever takes it and says he'll call Humberto. AS Cande and Doiminga take Cristobal upstairs, Sever berates himself for being stupid.

Aldonza tells Adelina about the kiss at the waterfall. She's over the moon. She feels something and it is kind of scary! It was all so fast. It was right after the rain started and put out the fire. But Aldonza thinks another fire started and it can't be put out! Adelina is surprised, but I think kind of pleased. Aldonza asks her not to tell anyone. Aldonza says again that she thinks it's a fire that can't be put out with water and Adelina hopes it's not a fire that is put out with tears.

Cristobal's ankle isn't broken. Cande pushes for bed rest. Humberto agrees. Cris shouldn't be on his feet and going up and down stairs. Cris asks if he can go out the window. Cande, Humberto and Sever leave and Cris thinks about the kiss. For her he'd break both legs, he sighs.

If you're interested, here are the lyrics to the opening theme (which I just copied and pasted and was too lazy to fix capitalization etc.):

Te prometí

antes que renuncies a nuestras promesas
que pienses en darle la vuelta a nuestras ganas
de amarnos una vida entera
antes que el miedo nos abra la puerta
que deje pasar la tormenta a nuestras almas
recuerda que el amor es fuerza
antes que creas que perdimos la guerra
levanta la cara y confía en mi te tengo aquí
y no voy a soltar

porque te prometí
que no iba a dejar de luchar jamas
que iba a morir por ti
lo prometí y no voy a cambiar
te prometí que si amenazaba la soledad
yo iba a abrazarte a mi
no voy a dejarte de amar

antes que la sombra de nuestro pasado
intente cambiar el destino y separarnos
regresare a tu lado
antes que creas que perdimos la guerra
levanta la cara y confía en mi
te tengo aquí y no te voy a soltar

porque te prometí
que no iba a dejar de luchar jamas
que iba a morir por ti
lo prometí y no voy a cambiar
te prometí que si amenazaba la soledad
yo iba a abrazarte a mi

yo iba a abrazarte a mi
que no iba a dejarte de amar

I wish I had recorded this episode, even though I was watching it live, so that I could watch that scene over and over. Oooh!!! Those besos! :) Looking forward to the recap, Sara.

Dear Other Shows: You have first kisses, rain, waterfalls? We have a first kiss by a waterfall in the rain. Don't be jealous.

Jeez, people. NO pressure!

;-)

Those are some gorgeous lyrics, and I hope the show lives up to them. So far, so good.

Thanks Sara! Great title. I'm looking forward to reading the recap.

Another GREAT episode tonight.

Wow! What a first kiss. Loved it. The rain and the waterfall behind them made it even better.

I LOVED Lola standing up for Aldonza.

Prudencia IS watching a different show than us.

Sev almost had a heart attack when he found out Cristobal was at the huerta. I loved how he called himself "estupido" when everyone went upstairs.

Sever had a Norberto (La Malquerida) moment. Except Norb's fire had even worse consequences for his son. Sever got lucky. The danger to BOTH of their kids sure got the two households working together real quick.

Ay! This is taking a little longer than I thought. Sorry.

Ok. Finally done.

Hopefully I'll get speedier. TSTSNBN left me rusty. It's faster to recap when nothing happens.

Fabulous, Sara! No need for disclaimers. You did the episode justice, and more!

I just loved all those references to fires (wink wink) being put out by waterfalls, rain, and tears. We know there will be a lot of tears, but let's bask in the glow of the rain and waterfall passion and kisses for a while.

I say when it comes to seduction and romance (especially the imaginary kind), we can let a few feminist rules slide. Plus, Cris is just so adorable, and we know Aldonza returns his feelings.

I've always thought Pablo Lyle was a good tn kisser. Glad to see he hasn't lost his skills. (David Zapeda, please take notes).

With your blessings then...

I will swoon over Pablo Lyle and his order-giving self!

I thought they both did a great job with the kissing. It wasn't sloppy and it was realistic and so ROMANTIC!

*squee*

Ok. I have to try to get some sleep. I'm pretty keyed up though!

One thing-- I thought Aldonza said that Candela will think twice before laying a hand on her again, not the other way around. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Glad Cris agreed with her that she was perfectly within her rights to deck his mother.

Those melons looked huge and ready for picking. They are really going to be in financial trouble now. I don't see how they are going to get out of this hole.

Hmm. That does make more sense. Let me go fix that.

Thank you, Vivi!

Also, if we could all think...I don't recall hearing even one MI AMOR!

This galan is a smooooth talker.

Again, our youngsters are their own little people. Not pawns in the bizarre games of their elders. I hope their autonomy continues.

Gracias, Sara! This show is going to keep us on our toes! Crap, I'm sitting here starting to quote every line! OK, top 5 favorites:

5: "He seems to be checking out the leaves in a melon field." Well, that's about what it looked like. If not for the creepy music, he could have been out for just a nice ride in the moonlight. With his cloak that they recycled from TSTSNBN.

4: "Then he very charmingly says "no" and the feminist in me just doesn't know what to do." Word. It's like 40's movie banter that could go either way. In the hands of a lesser actor, it would come off creepy for sure, but he delivers the lines so well that there doesn't seem to be any threat or hidden agenda, so I let it slide. I can't help myself! He's fictional!

3: "Surely a man can go for a ride whenever he wants?" Dressed up as Zorro. "What could happen? He's on his own hacienda, isn't he?" I mean, sure that one time a horse spooked and kicked me onto the blades of a plow, as far as anyone knows, but really, it's totally safe here.

2: "Looks like he burned his nose to spite his face!" Ha!

1: "But Aldonza thinks another fire started and it can't be put out!" "For her he'd break both legs, he sighs." They've known each other for, like, five minutes and I don't even care, I just want more waterfall smoochies in the rain. "Romance on a TN. It's not dead and my faith has been restored. I will watch this over and over this weekend." Absofrickinlutely! (OK, I lied, that was three lines in one.)

So, um, he was trying to help save her melons, eh?

(I never claimed to be mature.)

LOL! Oh, Kat...

The whole instant love amidst the intense family hatred is just so reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet and other star-crossed lovers tales. When done well, the audience can totally buy into it. Cris and Aldonza sold me.

I can't help it, Vivi! Innuendo is the love-child of snark and romance :D

I totally expect to hear some saucy remarks from Lola, too, once she hears the story! Mauricio, I agree with you--I love that she was willing to go toe-to-toe with Candela for her friend. That's someone I want in my corner.

Lola was quite bold to be talking back to her patrona like that. Poor Candela. She nearly gets her nose broken by one kid, and then in her own house she's getting challenged left and right by the young'uns.

He is very Romeo with the long speeches that make me forget they actually just met. But I was never fond of Juliet. Too passive. Aldonza, however is not in that mold. She's got a spine. Makes it all the more palatable.

I'm actually wondering if, since he told Padre G that having things handed to him wasn't his style, he'll end up trying to help the Alcocers. Maybe between the potential extension on the loan, Joaquin's practical expertise, and whatever Cristobal has been off learning at school, they'll turn things around? Or not. Everyone's talking like the situation is just far too dire.

Sara,
Wow, your recap was on fire tonight---a real pleasure to read. Thank you!

And, nary a "maldita g*ta" the whole week. I love this show!
Of course my favorite moment was the whole lonnnng waterfall kiss scene. Also, I got a delicious shudder of delight seeing Sever, in his long black cape on his black horse on a black night. Like a little vignette of evil...

I am so delighted by the complex characters in this, no cartoon cut-out baddies. We want to know the backstory. Boy, these people can act, these writers (so far) can write.

J in Oregon
(Where the rain usually puts out the flaming melons...)

My coffee still needs to kick in, but I just wanted to say that this is a great show with great acting and writing. But we are also handed gems like SEVERiano and flaming melons. Just doesn't get any better.

Oh, Sara, what was to worry. You did this episode total justice with this off the charts recap.

And what an episode! The acting is so good, the writing has the right touch of novelty, smarm and some cliché that is making this so fun to watch. So some of those lines were a little over the top, but it seems to be a bit of Mr. SmoothMoves character. Sometimes it just falls flat in a TN, but being Cris is not a stereotype lover-boy, I'm not having a problem with all that right now.

So that kiss. **Sigh**. Been awhile since I saw a good one like that in a show. These two have chemistry in spades. The fact they are also both firecrackers just makes you want to really cheer for them. Thank goodness for Hulu, with the subzero temps this weekend, I can keep watching that scene and keep warm.

My chuckle of the night--Sever and that Zorro outfit. What I wouldn't give to see the out-takes when he strolled out unto set with that get-up. But I love watching his banter with Cande. Tell me that whole scene was one step away from some hot stuff happening--those two actually have it bad for each other. Great acting again.

Daisynjay

thanks , Sara, for staying up late to give us that excellent, bouncy recap.
It is interesting that we are all starting to think alike. Last night, when I saw Severed riding out at night to check out the melons, I thought..Zorro?...Heartless Horseman?..Armless Horseman?

I am also on board the brick Suave Train. He is a smooth operator for sure. I always get a giggle at how quickly these couples fall in love, but then , I remember how I felt the first time Hub walked toward me.

Could Candy get anymore uptight with the black sheath dress and the sleeked back hair? She reminded me of someone, and then it came to me..those backup singers before Robert Palmer's ''Addicted to Love''...minus the red lipstick.

Speaking of lipstick, we got to see Pru without hers..or any makeup.

''Brick''???...That was supposed to be ''Rico Suave'' . I hate this IPad.

Good morning!

I'm glad the early reviews seem to be favorable. I know exactly what Eli was saying when she was talking about doing justice.

daisynjay-The temps here aren't as cold, but I plan on rewatching those "warm" scenes again.

susanlynn (and Kat)- it doesn't matter how long I watch TNs I will never get used to how quickly folks fall in love. But like Vivi said, our young actors sold me.

I'm already looking forward to tonight's action!

OH! I agree that Candela looks like an Addicted to Love girl.

I didn't even bat an eye at "brick". Worked for me...though I have to wonder how it went from "suave" to "brick."

Well, Sara, you had a good episode to work on and you more than did it justice!

5ft, you beat me to the Zorro comparison. What an absurd outfit.

So Bobby's farm grows watermelons? Knox County, Indiana (where I live) used to call itself the Watermelon Capitol of the World. We even have a New Year's Eve watermelon descending during the countdown to the New Year like the ball in Times Square.

I like Cris and Aldonza, especially because they are both coming to the conclusion that so what if their parents didn't get along, what does that have to do with us? Both of them helping each other out last night, then winding up at the waterfall and kissing was a nice touch.

Yeah, I agree with you Sara. Sever was checking out Candy's ass. So she still kindles a fire in his heart after all this time?

David

Thanks David!

If not the fire in his heart at least the blood in his loins.

Inspired by tofie (but not as good.)

Aldonza-My melons!

Cristobal- I'll fight for your melons!

Sev- Melon Felon.

Cande-Keep your hands off my Melons!

Prudencia- Sev saved your melons!

Emanuel- I want to make my own melons!

Roberta- Save my melons!

Dominga- Mind your own Melons!

Ah, I yield to your point, Sara. Sever IS more of a loin kind of guy than a heart kind of guy.

David

Sara, oh my heavens, this was just spectacular. Like a fine wine, full bodied, fragrant and luscious.

Your detail was perfect and your vocabulary is so appreciated!

“Then he very charmingly says "no" and the feminist in me just doesn't know what to do. (That smile!!) *grumblegrumble", "My feminist side knows EXACTLY what to do with THAT statement" and " Prudencia explains that in small towns gossip spreads like...er...wildfire" were among my many favorites.

I'm enthusiastically agreeing with everyone that I can't think of a more idyllic setting than that beautiful waterfall. And those kisses were simply dreamy! Pablo is playing Cris like a rather serious young man. I love the romantic side of him - his thinking back and savoring the encounter was a nice touch.

I love Lola's fire! Even Dominga's warning facial expression and words couldn't keep her from standing up to Candela...What a devoted friend. We should all be so lucky to have someone like that in our corner.

"Romance on a TN. It's not dead and my faith has been restored". Mine as well! I think Amores Verdaderos started a trend back toward how important and crucial love is to these storylines.

Daisynjay "My chuckle of the night--Sever and that Zorro outfit" had me laughing. Great comment.

Outside of the "children", Melesio, Dominga and a few other exception, most of the leads are shades of grey and/or downright dislikeable and despicable. Works for me!

Diana

Sara, honey, don't you EVEN worry! The recap is a delight, caught every passionate moment and inclusion of the lyrics of the theme song caps it off perfectly!

Thank you!

As a matter of fact not only is the theme song the theme of the novela, of course, but what Cris and Aldonza were pledging to each other by the waterfall was lifted right out of the song! But as many have said, they sold it and YES, ROMANCE IS BACK!!!

Who is the saint of telenovelas? We need to light a candle that Cris and Aldonza don't have stupid break ups, that he's not a wimp that lets women force kisses on him while he reacts passively after which heis dragged by the nose to the altar. PLEEEEEASE!!
The scenese of Cris with Valeria and his mom would suggest this will not be the case. Please don't change up on us!

I have to say I noted Sever's aggresive visual foreplay with Candela. Man! That dud is prolly hell in the boudouir if he can do with the rest of his assets what he does with his eyes. I know he's getting his ashes hauled but what is Candela doing, getting off on hate? I reckon.

Loved both Cris and Candela's reaction after the "first kiss by a waterfall in the rain." (Diva) And Tia seemed to be getting some vicarious thrills out of hearing Aldonza's story. Why couldn't Adelina marry Joaquin? If they didn't want any children to complicate her close relationship with Aldonza, just make her sterile. Oh well.

Thank you again, Sara! I loved all the lines that Diva and Diana noted and more! Maybe back later!

*oops, meant to say that dude, not dud. He may be dud in other ways but not in that department.

Daisynjay, that's a good point about Cristobal not being the stereotypical galan. Or, he actually *is* a galan so far, which it doesn't feel like we've been getting.

susanlynn, I want to make "brick Suave Train" a thing. That guy is soooooooooo brick Suave Train!

David, but do they crown a Watermelon Queen? :D

Now, now, let's not get ahead of ourselves. We know this is a traditional telenovela, and a remake no less. There will be separation and tears (and probably some blood). But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not caused by our protagonists being idiots. So far, neither one of them has shown themselves to be anyone's fool, and that makes me happy.

I have been thinking about Emmanuel. What does Humberto intend for him to do with his life? Stay in his gilded cage forever? Never getting a job, his independence, or ever asking questions? Just staying out of Cande's and Sever's way? He's a man now. What did he expect?

Lila-Thanks, girl! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this stays good and our characters don't get lobotomies that render them useless.

Apparently Saint Clare of Assisi is the patron saint of television. Would she work?

Sev has to be amazing in the bedroom...Roberta was willing to kill for it!

I'm kind of liking brick Suave Train, too. Would the opposite be broke Suave Train. Pablo Martinez Negrete was so broke Suave Train.

So the "romance in a TN" line seems to be singled out a lot and Diana mentioned Amores Verdaderos. That one is honestly the last Televisa production that I can remember that seemed to have romance/chemistry (I've seen plenty in other TNs.) Am I watching the wrong shows?

MPV-never got into that couple.
DQTQTQ-Cute couple, no real spark for me.
TSTSNBN-let's not go there.

"But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not caused by our protagonists being idiots.

Yup. I need to remind myself that there WILL be tears and a break up, but like you said...as long as it's not because they are stupid.

5ft: Yes they do. Here is an excerpt from the Vincennes Sun Commercial.

"Emily Brown of Vincennes is the reigning Illiana Watermelon Queen, and last week she beat out six other women during the National Watermelon Conventionb in La Quinta, CA to claim the national crown."

We take melons very seriously here.

David

What are we defining as a romantic tn? Are we defining it simply the chemistry between the leading couple? The amount of romantic gestures?

I think many people LOVED the romance and the chemistry between Alejandro and Montserat in Robo. Alejandro's rage issues and tendency for raping his wife dampened any good feelings I had about him as a galan. Sorry, that's when it doesn't matter if it's fiction to me. A guy like that is not going to make me sigh. But he seemed to do it for Monse and plenty of the lady viewers, so just goes to show that this is all in the eye of the beholder.

Recent couples/galans that have made me sigh-- German in La Malquerida and Max in Quiero Amarte.

"We take melons very seriously here."

It's stuff like that that makes me love people at Caray.

Hmmm. How would I define "romance"?

AV was romantic but probably more toward the "chemistry" definition. EY and Erika had it...but the characters *were* married at the time. Sooo...not very romantic.

I guess "chemistry" is my go to definition.

Carlos in TSTSNBN would be on the Sigh-o-meter as well. As well as Pierre Louis's character in DQTQTQ.

I agree that Montse and Alejandro had chemistry...but I didn't find them romantic at all.

OH! Jamie Camil makes me sigh. In pretty much everything I've seen him in.

Willy Boy made me sigh.

I'm sighing over Cristobal, but it is watching Aloonza's reaction to him that is causing that sigh. Does that make sense?

erm. Aldonza. NOT Aloonza.

Vivi, it seems like he didn't think it through. I'm wondering why they don't just send him to university. If Candela wants him to stay away, that would get him away, wouldn't it? And he could go have a life somewhere else? Or is it Humberto's job to keep him, as you say, locked in a cage?

Sara, Saint Clare! That's fabulous. I'm sure she's the one in charge of DVRs as well...it's all about not missing the show! Perhaps we should also add Santa Lucia...St. Lucy is the patron saint of eye afflictions. A bad TN could qualify, no?

David, that warms my heart to hear it. Que Viva La Reina!

TSTSNBN was "A Fine Romance." MPV he was often too aggressive for me to feel all swoony. DQ, when they were good, they were good, but also not swoony. Because apparently Aldonza and Cristobal were hogging all the swoon!

As for what romance is...I think if it more as a feeling than something with objective criteria. As I'm watching a couple--the lead or any other--do I think "Oh! I want that!"

Do I want to be kissed by a waterfall in the rain? Oh, hell yes!

Do I want the "love of my life" to call me a slut in front of my parents? Hell to the no.

Note that I didn't specify who would be doing the kissing. A girl's gotta have her secrets ;)

Sara, your recap was masterful. Thank you. Yes, you did it justice. I like this novela a lot. Valeria is about the become the cliche of the girl who wants a man who clearly is not interested but "he's hers" in her head, lol. Aldonza and Cris better be prepared for all the maldad coming their way.
Romy

Kat- Now I have Eartha Kitt singing that song in my head. It's on my iPod, so I'll be playing it this weekend. ;)

No wait, it's Lena Horne's version I have on my iPod, from the Priscilla Queen of the Desert soundtrack. :) And it does perfectly fit with Pablo and Esme.

Sara...Are you watching ''Jane the Virgin?''. Jamie is so funny in that show. I think that I missed it this week, but I am hooked on it. He really sends up novela hgalans.

When it comes to romance, you cannot beat Alborada, my first tn. Fernando Colunga should be teaching a class on kissing. He used every ''mi'' in the book---''mi amor'', ''mi alma'', ''mi cielo.'' And..eww, baby, that hombre on a horse galloping along the surf while holding the reins in one hand as he rushes to save Hippolita. Have mercy. We need heroes.

And let's not forget Big Ed Yanez in Destilando Amor who literally couldn't do it with anybody but ''GAV_I_O_TA.'' And remember all those fifty shades of prepositional phrases in AV...on the floor, against the wall, under the desk..etc etc.

Sara..I kind of like Aloonza. If I ever change my name, that would be a good choice.

Thank you, Romy! I like this novela a lot, too. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

Valeria wants Cristobal and there are a host of other issues that can keep Cris and Aldonza apart. I'm also interested in Lola and Emmanuel (not as a couple per se, but their characters.)

I'm going to assume that Emmanuel is going to have to get work somewhere in Santa Lucia. He doesn't strike me as a "just for the first 20 episodes" character.

More on romance- I guess, too it all depends on my mood. Every TN has some romance, but that's not the only genre. Cuna de lobos did have some romance...but mostly it was a show about money and secrets. MPV (for me) was not a "romance first" TN. My frustration is when a show is supposed to be romantic and it isn't.

Aren't they all supposed to be? Or at least "love" stories, if not romantic.

Susanlynn-I did't even SEE Destilando Amor except when cruising by Uni on my way to another channel, but definitely could SEE the romance and chemistry!!

I've only seen the DVD of Alborada and it *was* romantic. I wish the would re-run that one!

Diva-I think we get "love" stories more than anything else, but I think every once in a while you get one where love is not the main premise. I always felt like MPV was never intended to be a "love" story, but they sort of imposed the love story on it. I think it would have been better if they had just stuck to the intrigue/on the run story.

Didn't someone once post the different genres of TNs? I remember there was "revenge" "fairy tale" and some others. Am I making that up?

And susanlynn I'm not watching Jane the Virgin but I probably should.

La Malquerida was definitely not a "love" story per se. The central relationship in question was the relationship between a mother and a daughter and how it would be affected by a man. But there were side romances we could root for.

Susanlynn- I love Jane the Virgin. Haven't seen this week's yet.

I think we were just talking about romance in recent tns, since Amores Verdaderos 2 yrs ago, but certainly we all have our favorites from before that.

I think Jane the Virgin would appeal to anyone who loves telenovelas as a genre and loves Caray, Caray! Between the show itself and the Narrator making observations, it's a show and a recap all in one. In fact, I'm not sure it's even possible to do a recap because the Narrator has already done all the work.

Sara, what you're saying about categories sounds familiar to me as well. And, Vivi, I agree, La Malquerida wasn't a story of romantic love at its core.

Sara- I remember the types too.

I believe the Cinderella/fairytale tns are called "rosa." Poor girl meets rich boy, they fall in love, and everyone tries to separate them because of their class differences. There are revenge/vengeance tns; narco-novelas; mystery; and comedy. Probably some others I'm not remembering.

I suppose that they no longer make historical romances anymore because they are expensive to make. They are my favorite. Carla Estrada and Monica Miguel did such a spectacular job with both Alborada and Amor Real. I also miss the Cristina show. She always had the cast of the novelas on after the finale.

I didn't keep up with La Malquerida like I should have, but I liked that it didn't seem to fit into the "love story" mold...AT ALL.

I enjoy the romance, but I like to have some story line that isn't ALL romance-some mystery or secret that is hinted at (in Tierra the mystery surrounding Alma.)

I'm not sure that La Sombra is going to give us something like that. We've made conjectures about Emmanuel, but I don't feel like that's been set up like that. La Sombra strikes me as a straight romance, Romeo and Juliet tale.

Yes! Period/historical tns. Those are great but rare these days.

Thanks for confirming that there *was* a comment about types. I'm not crazy!

"Rosa"...noted.

Is the American audience the only audience wishing for historical TNs?

Wow, excellent Sara.

Weird, I teared up when Aldonza and Cristobal kissed. I believed it.

Candela - ha, ha, frigging ha, my son the comedian

Cristobal - hmmm, I'll bring the heat next time, as a Mime

Valeria - family affair

PG - backroom deal

Prudencia - your tongue wags like a puppys tail

Humberto - I'm gonna go sleep in the garage

Aldonza - fire, rain and saliva

Lola - grumble, grumble, what? I didn't say anything

Severiano - Ring of Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It7107ELQvY

NO MIMES!

I'm fine, I'm fine...just having a flashback....

He did score points with me for the smartass "I can go out the window, right?" Condenado chamaco!

Yah, romance for sure is in the eye, and heart, of the beholder.

The first romance I saw in a novela was La Fea. Jaime and Angelica had such chemistry and their kisses expressed the full range of emotion from when Fernando was playing Leti to save his business to when they were fully lovers and everything in between. It wasn't just kisses either. The actors have to be able to bring the full compliment of human emotions with their faces, their eyes, their body language, the tone and timbre of their voices, the cadence of their speech and I feel like Jaime and Angelica shoulda yelled "Cut the Check!" (Thanks, Diva) They got me hooked on and looking for that kind of romance in every novela. Not understanding the genre I was ready to march on Televisa when Aldo came along and I hated the separation!

The people in love can certainly be human but as many of us have said, I don't like them spineless, or stupid, or gullible or helpless puppets at the mercy of all the baddies, or fate, or the cards or whatever. I would have to say Palbum and Esmiserable are exactly what I NEVER want to see in any story every again. Exact opposite of Leti and Fer.

I am now enjoying Max and Amaya on Quiero Amarte or, I enjoyed them before the "necessary" separation, a separation which unfortunately dampened my enthusiasm for him.

So Leti and Fer so far are number one for me in Spanish language novelas and a couple in my all time favorite Brazilian novela, Viver a Vida, maybe ties with Max and Amaya coming in second. I don't have as many Mexican novelas under my belt as youze.

Just don't let Cris and Aldonzita get stooopid or weak!

tofie...

How in the hell did we ALL miss the Ring of Fire joke?

Truly you are brilliant.

"The actors have to be able to bring the full compliment of human emotions with their faces, their eyes, their body language, the tone and timbre of their voices, the cadence of their speech"

I am seeing this on La Sombra and I AM LOVING IT!!

I cannot stand when the words are beautiful, but the acting is week (Sorry, Sebastian Rulli is guilty of this in my book...as well as Danny.)

Ay de mi!!
The acting is WEAK! (I'm getting dumber which is bad.)

but this is funnay Sev- Melon Felon

But it only works if arson is a felony.

Melon Felon sounds much better than Melon Misdemeanor. Use it

Hahaha!

It was a challenge to come up with that last. I don't know how you do it day after day on MULTIPLE shows!

More on romance, the theme song helps.

I absolutely loved "Hoy Tengo Ganas De Ti" so much that it made La Tempestad a favorite of mine and made Ruli (sp?) into a hottie for me. I thought his love scenes were hot though. . .oh my gosh, what was the girl's name?. . .I didn't like how she totally believed Herman, the crazy guy all the time. I enjoyed that show. Too bad they shredded hell out of it!

Lila- That was not Rulli. That was William Levy. Rulli was in Teresa and Lo Que La Vida Me Robo.

William Levy is always really good in his romance scenes. He has really good chemistry with his leading ladies and is a good tn kisser.

Oh that's me too, Lila! If I don't like a theme song, it kind of takes away from the show. I didn't like the theme song for TSTSNBN very much.

I do like this theme song...and as a bonus the show actually incorporated the lyrics into the dialog. Sometimes songs feel like they have nothing to do with the show. As good as it was, the AV theme song didn't make much sense when I considered the action of the program.

I'm all over Levy's eyelashes.

I can't figure out what it is about Pablo Lyle that I like so much. He really does't strike me as having "classic good looks." I think it's his eyes and his gentle way of talking (which may be more character, script and direction.)

Totallly agree about Sweet William Levy in a kayak, too. He does seem to have chemistry with whoever he is acting with.

Oops! Thanks, Vivi! Okay, Levy. Yah. I remember Levy from Acoralada (sp) one of my first novelas and yes I liked Rulli and his leading lady in LQLVMR. I'll have to catch up with that one. Family stuff took me away in the middle of it. But yah, LT & LQLVMR are faves in terms of romance for me.

Ah yes..the kayak. SWeet William was more attractive to me after I watched him on Dancing with the stars. He was sweet and sincere. The first time I saw him was in Passion in a really dreadful long wig. He was being called the Latin Brad Pitt, and Brad has never appealed to me. I am a JOe Lando, Dean Cain kind of girl.

I have been watching Hart to Hart reruns with Stephanie Powers and Robert Wagner. Now there is a romantic pair.

Sara- I get you, I also am afraid that I won't do this show justice, with the show that will not be named snark was easy to come by but this show deserves much more than snark!

I'm highly confident, we'll have plenty opportunity to snark as we get to know these folk better. Prudencia for one a stage mom and Honey Boo Boo or hen pecked Humberto or wild eyed Roberta or long suffering Adelnia or Lola and her scab picking, or Severiano, nearly a caricature, he's trying so hard to be bad, even the ice queen and her one smile per episode. Don't worry ya'll you can count on me.

The KISS aside, I loved the conversation between PG and Banker Uriel, it felt a real conversation, not some mud thrown out to advance the plot.

Yeah, there is always something to snark about, even if the tn is good and entertaining.

The banker seems like a nice, reasonable guy. Interesting to learn that he and Ray were friends.

Man, when Roberta learns her kid with Sever is alive and they stole him/her (I think it's pretty much a lock on Emmanuel now), can you imagine just how much more she'll HATE Sever and Candela?

Some shows deserve almost derogatory snark. Others just general jokery about the genre. Of course, the higher quality the show, the trickier the snark.

La Malquerida deserved respect, but you still had some great nicknames for Esteban.

I feel like some subjects should not be snarked. Like Alejandra's story in La Malquerida.

I'm sure we will have some good snarkotunities in this. We've already got Johnny Trash and his Zorro cape, don't we?

Will Roberta hate Sever? I think it depends on how it goes down. What if she thinks Cande is behind it all? Roberta is pretty hung up Sev.

Uhoh...hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Severed, the man in black, will find out that Roberta and Candy are scary enemies to have.

No, I'm not going to mock the downtrodden, and certainly not for being downtrodden, but there's humor to be found in many situations, even if it's a dark, twisted humor. Or a satisfaction in evil finally getting its due. There will be snark...oh, yes, there will be snark....

I think snark is a personal thing, too. I love to snark. It doesn't mean I hate the show (pretty much the Caray credo.) But there are other Caray mates that aren't that into the snark. And that's ok, too.

We're cool that way. I like that each recapper has their own personal style and everyone is bringing different dishes to the buffet, if you will.

Melon Felon bwaaahahahaha

GREAT recap Sara---And they didn't let a fire stop them from staring at each other passionately

Romance on a TN isn't dead and my faith has been restored.

Sara ---The gringo adds that there were more flames in those kisses than there were in the fire

It is starting out nice between Cris y Aldonza but I agree with Romy that if Valeria goes down and we all know that she will, she won't go down without a fight.

Great show so far---I'm going to be sad when Susana bows out but I know that the show really is about young Cristobal and Aldonza.

Speaking of Pablo Lyle---I went to a live stage performance of Una Familia con Suarte to see sweet Sherlyn sing and play her accordion. At one point in the show, Pablo came out of a side door by the stage and ran down the isle. He stopped right in front of where I was sitting. I immediately jumped up and held out my hand. He grabbed it and gave me a hearty handshake. He said something and seemed very earnest but I was so excited that I don't remember what he said or if he spoke in Spanish or English.
I will never forget that handshake though.

must see tv tonight. More hot kisses?
the gringo

Recap potluck...great. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Each recapper has his\her own style...variety and a spicy life.

gringo- I am very jealous of you!! That must have been fabulous!

Is Susana supposed to bow out of this? :-(

She's not in the whole thing :-(

susanlynn-I like all the variety, too!

Gringo- What an awesome story!

IMDB lists how many episodes of a show an actor was in. If they don't have information on all the episodes yet, the number won't be correct. Or sometimes the number just isn't correct, even after the show is over. That holds true for any episodic show, even US TV, but they're more likely to be accurate for the most popular US shows.

So I posted baseless speculation about Susana's involvement in this show, which I'm now regretting, mostly because I don't want to cause anyone distress.

When did you post baseless speculation? What was the speculation? Lol. I missed it or I can't remember it.

In the Phone Home thread.

I'm covering my eyes and ears and going "la la lal la laaa!"

So does this mean we're all only 2 degrees of separation from Pablo Lyle now? That may be way too close...I mean for him, not for me....

Whutchoo talkin' bout, Diva?

gringo shook his hand!

Oooh! Gotcha!

Gringo can you rub your hand across your monitor so we can feel the Pablo Lyle molecules???
J in Ohhhh....

J! It's a good thing I wasn't drinking anything.

But...um...yeah...could you, gringo?
