La Sombra del Pasado #7 - Wed 2/25 - She gives what she gets
Aldonza heads for El Santuario to give Cristobal an eyeful of real natural beauty ifyouknowwhatImeanandIthinkyoudo. He rides up asking for *cough* permission to *cough* enter her lands. He gallantly turns his back so she can get out of the pond and get dressed and they can *cough* talk. I swear I'm not a perv, but when the subtext is just sitting there, it's rude not to pick it up, right?
Valeria brought Candela cookies. Judging by Candela's reaction, there are not enough baked goods in the world to make her think of Valeria as an acceptable daughter-in-law. Nevertheless, Candela also doesn't want to have to spend time with Valeria, so she sends her off to find Cristobal. Five more seconds and I'm sure she would have actually made a "shoo"-ing motion with her hands.
Cristobal remembers hiding out from his parents at El Santuario. He thinks it's full of mystery, magic, secrets. And he always thought something incredible would happen to him here…"And finally it happened. I met you." Duuuuuuuuuuude, those are some smooth words right there. And I'm pretty sure "incredible" hasn't happened yet. Aldonza doesn't agree their meeting was a good thing. She reminds him no Mendozas are welcome there. "I'll change my last name" he tosses off, casually, with a shrug, the charmer. He proposes they forget about their parents' feud and make peace between the two of them. "No one has to know." Oh, Viewerville will know…and we'll enjoy all that peacemaking. Is it getting hot in here? He offers his hand and they shake. I think there's steam coming out of my TV. No, wait, that's jealous fumes from Valeria. Buzzkill. She pretty much ignores Aldonza until Aldonza says neither of them has any reason to be there, so they might as well go. "You understand me?" Cristobal says he does, but I'm not sure I do…was that an acceptance that they just formed the "We secretly don't hate each other" club and she's keeping up appearances? I guess we'll find out.
Padre Geronimo has come by the house to talk to Roberta about Aldonza. "Oh, home sermon service," she quips. He asks her to behave herself in public. "Too late for that." He wonders what happened to her--not just where it concerns men, but her general state of perpetual bitterness. He says she's not the enchanting woman his brother fell in love with. "That woman didn't exist…well, in your brother's imagination. I've always been like this. I've always been trash." No, Padre G doesn't buy that. He thinks there's a good woman who wants to be redeemed. "Do it for your daughter, before it's too late. You don't want to have to feel sorry later for ruining your life, and hers." Roberta's defensiveness kicks in…"Oh! My purse! Do I need to give you a donation so you'll go?" Padre G says he feels sorry for her and leaves her with a blessing. And a single tear of puro dolor rolls down Roberta's cheek as she bites her lips. In the words of Anthony Mackie, "Cut the check!" (i.e., she brought it! Click here for more.)
Uriel, the bank guy, called Severiano urgently because he thinks now is the time for Severiano and Roberta to come to an agreement about purchasing her land. Uriel would rather not have to foreclose on the property. It's in the bank's best interest that Roberta get a fair price for it so she can turn around and pay back her debt. Uriel has heard the rumors, but he never believed them, since Severiano is such a fine, upstanding citizen. Severiano tells him there is no way he'd attempt to make Roberta an offer for the property. It would be more trouble than it's worth. Uriel pouts a bit, in a bankerly way, so Severiano relents. He'll try to help that poor woman out, just because it would help Uriel. Cara de "What did I just agree to?" de Severiano.
Lola has been waiting anxiously for Aldonza to get home since Cristobal sent her over to ask how Aldonza is doing. Aldonza doesn't understand why, since she just ran into him herself. "Well, he asked me to come over here and then his dad took him riding." Whatever. Aldonza wasn't impressed (or so she says). Cristobal is an entitled jackass like the rest of his family and that's that. "Que genio!" says Lola as Aldonza stomps into the house. (What a temper!) So…no supersecret club, then?
Cristobal and Valeria get back to Las Animas. Cristobal bids Valeria goodbye in a perfectly friendly but not interested way. "Tell Emmanuel I said hi." Turns out Melesio is the one who told Valeria where to find him. Or rather, where he thought Cristobal had gone, since Cristobal always liked to sneak off to El Santuario. And yes, he means "sneak" because the Alcocers don't like Mendozas on their property. As Melesio walks away, Cristobal muses that it's still the same.
Adelina scolds Aldonza for "skinny-dipping" in the pond. Not that she really was. When she hears about Cristobal being there, she warns Aldonza to be careful. People in this town like to talk. Aldonza knows, what with her mom's reputation. She suggests they put up a "barda" (wall, enclosure), but there's no money. Not even to pay the mortgage (hipoteca). For some unknown reason Aldonza decides to talk to Roberta about it and hopes Roberta won't get mad, as usual. My advice: stay out of arm's reach.
Candela is surprised that Cristobal didn't invite Valeria to stay for dinner. I could have sworn she didn't care for Valeria, but now she's talking about what a great gal she is. "Just chatting, that's all." Cristobal doesn't like the idea of his godmother as his mother-in-law. Riiiiiight, well, the good thing is, Valeria is nothing like her mother. "If you say so. I don't really know her." He excuses himself to go clean up and Candela makes a plotting face.
Valeria spins it to her mom as Cristobal being TOTALLY hot for her and Candela being supportive of the relationship. "But, he was flirting with Aldonza and he kissed her! And she was all wet like she'd just gotten out of the pond! I don't know if she was wearing a bathing suit or not, but she's perfectly capable of getting into the pond naked with Cristobal right there." Prudencia is completely accepting of Valeria's assessment of everything that happened. I'm wondering what show they're watching, because it bears very little resemblance to the show I'm watching.
Candela asks Severiano what's going on with the bank. Before he can tell her, Cristobal interrupts them. He wants them to plan their trip to Spain. Severiano promises to be available at any time. "Ask your mother when we're going." Candela tries to back out, saying she promised she'd help Padre G with something. Those two didn't raise a fool. He knows something is up. He knows they don't sleep in the same room. It bothers him that they're treating him like a 10-year-old. He's not going to help them keep this farce up. "Either we travel together, all three of us, like the family we're supposed to be, or we're not going anywhere." Cristobal walks out of the office and Candela shuts the door behind him. Severiano is positively giddy. He warns Candela that she'd better be prepared, because next time he'll probably want to know WHAT separated them, and Candela had better not think she's going to escape criticism, because she's been his accomplice in "things that no one would be proud of." I'm not sure what exactly he means by that (as in, have we seen it all?) but Candela looks reeeeeally worried.
Roberta drinks straight from the bottle (like a proper bad girl) as she thinks back on her earlier conversation with Padre Geronimo. There's a knock at the door and, wow, she was drinking alone in her room, at that! Aldonza has come to please talk calmly about the mortgage. Roberta tells her to forget about it and just have a mother-daughter talk instead. "I know I haven't been the greatest mother, but the last thing I want is for you to go through all the things I've been through. I swear I would give my life if you could be happy. I want you to know I'm not a monster. No matter what, I love you with my whole soul. You're the most beautiful, cherished ("valioso") thing I've ever had in my life. I want you to know that and never forget it." She's crying and hugging Aldonza as Adelina comes in to tell them that Severiano is in the living room. Annnnnnnd, the moment is over. Roberta is up in a flash, throwing on her cardigan, and heading out the door before Adelina and Aldonza can react.
Roberta tells Severiano they have nothing to talk about. He says he knows about her financial problems and he's there to propose "algo que les puede convenir"--something that may be in their (and he indicates Aldonza and Adelina are included) best interest. Roberta wants to be left alone with him, but Aldonza tries to insist it concerns all of them, but Adelina hustles her out of there, probably thinking this is not the way she wants Aldonza finding out All The Secrets.
Out in the yard, Adelina makes some weak excuses about things that Roberta needs to deal with alone. "What 'things'? Are you saying that she and Severiano have…?" Adelina says it's not what she thinks and drags her along to talk to Joaquin.
Severiano says he can give her enough money to pay back the bank and live comfortably. He brought a blank check and everything. Roberta tears it up, saying she once trusted him completely and he betrayed her, abandoning her to her fate when she most needed him. She'll never forgive him, nor does she think it's too late for "reclamos" (complaints). It's his fault she lost her husband, the ability to be a mother, and she has turned into what she is now (I assume she means "a bitter, angry woman who drinks alone in the afternoon and has the whole town talking behind her back" and not "a sexy bitch who can rock a red dress like nobody's business"). Oh, no, he counters, that's all HER fault. She was the one who killed Raymundo. "To defend you! I was an idiot. I believed you'd be man enough to stand up for me, but I was so wrong." "That was so long ago. I've forgotten about it. Forget about it!" Roberta insists that this house and the property are her daughter's birthright (patrimonio) and even if she was starving, she wouldn't give it to him. Severiano says he'll end up with all of it even if he has to sell his soul to the devil. Well, that's news--I didn't think he had one. Roberta kicks him out. Before he goes, he lecherously says "Your daughter is…beautiful," annnd, switch gears to just plain creepy and manipulative now for, "and I'm sure that's how the daughter you and I lost would have been, don't you think?" She screams at him to get out and starts having her meltdown as he walks off…after undressing her with his eyes one last time, I kid you not!
Emmanuel goes over to Las Animas to see Severiano, but he doesn't want to tell Candela what it's about. He finally admits he's looking for a job. Candela says they don't have any jobs. "I'm sure you weren't going to try to take advantage of the relationship between my husband and Humberto." Cristobal comes downstairs and happily greets Emmanuel, asking him to come along for a trip to town. "Your father will be home soon and he'll probably want to know where you are." "Oh. Tell him I'm with Emmanuel." says Cristobal, completely innocently. As soon as they leave, she gets a call from Prudencia. An urgent call. That has to do with Cristobal…and Aldonza Alcocer, Roberta's daughter. I swear I saw flames in Candela's eyes. Or maybe that was the reflection from the window.
The dudes chat at the car. Emmanuel DOES have a thing for Valeria, but he knows she'd never give him the time of day. Cristobal is surprised to hear there are no jobs available, but he suggests they talk on the drive. He wants to see Padre Geronimo.
Aldonza doesn't seem to understand why Roberta is so upset when all Severiano came by to do was try to buy the property yet again. Aldonza asks if they could maybe just rent him a piece, to get some extra income? Oh, hell no. Roberta says they absolutely CANNOT do business with "those people." Aldonza really wants to know QTH this feud is about and she wants to know ALL of it right now. Adelina tells them both to cut it out. There's a knock at the door and Roberta tells Aldonza to answer it. Which is too bad, because it's Candela and she's barely over the threshold before she slaps Aldonza and tells her to stay away from Cristobal. Not to be outdone, Aldonza slaps her right back and a cheer goes up from both me and the Mr. In fact, Mr. 5ft may or may not have exclaimed quite loudly about Candela's character and what rude thing she could go do. Roberta gloats and Adelina looks like she's trying not to laugh. Candela has blood dripping from her nose as she calls them all harpies. Roberta tells her to get out before they kick her out. Candela insists on getting the last word in. She warns Aldonza that she won't allow her "que enredes a mi hijo" (to tangle up her son). She won't "arrebatar" (catch) my son the way this "p-" ("puta"; whore) did with her--Roberta cuts her off, but Aldonza wants to know who. Time and place, kid. "If you really want to know. Ask her. Let's see if she has the guts to tell you." Adelina finally reacts and tells Candela to get out. "You've been warned" Candela tosses off before she leaves. "I'm waiting, mom." "What? No. I'm the mom here. I'm the one who's waiting for an explanation! What do you have going on with Severiano Mendoza's son." Aldonza just lifts her chin and says nothing.
Cristobal and Padre Geronimo are buds. Padre G reminds him of his youthful shenanigans…the time Cristobal nearly burned down the parish house; the time he had to be rescued from the bell tower because he was swinging on the ropes yelling that he was Tarzan. And still Padre G is glad to see him. Cristobal isn't sure if he's staying or not. He's not sure he wants to stick around and work with horses. And he doesn't like having things handed to him. "Liar. I think it's that you've got a girlfriend out there who's waiting for you to come back to her." Cristobal says he's single…but there's a special girl…named Aldonza. "My niece?" Padre looks troubled.
Aldonza insists there's nothing going on. She's always known him, just like everyone else has, but no, they're not friends. She's barely spoken ten words to him. Roberta warns her that if she finds out that Aldonza has so much as looked at him, she'll be the one to deliver a slap. Aldonza says she gets it. "So, now can you tell me what she was talking about." Roberta refuses. "I'm the mom here. And I'm not going to give that harpy the satisfaction of getting dragged into her intrigues."
Prudencia explains to Valeria that she called Candela because Aldonza is trying to steal Valeria's boyfriend. Again…what show is she watching? "Yes, but now he's going to find out and he's going to think I'm the one who told her!" A sloppy-drunk Prudencia (too bad she and Roberta can't stand each other or they could have some fabulous drunken afternoons together!) says Valeria's as thickheaded as her father. "Leave the thinking to me. You just do what I tell you." Valeria wants Prudencia to butt out of her life. Emmanuel comes in as Prudencia is saying she's just removing pebbles from Valeria's path. He tries to sneak in. Prudencia cries and whines that she's clearly an "estorbo" (a bother) and she won't move even one more finger for Valeria. "Sorry if my maternal love offended you!" She takes her drink upstairs and Emmanuel asks Valeria what happened. "None of your business." He asks why she didn't tell him that Cristobal was in town when she's seen him and talked to him. She brightens up, realizing he must have heard that from Cristobal. "Did he talk about me?!" "Oh, sure, you didn't need to tell me anything, but you expect me to tell you everything. You like him, don't you?" "That's my business."
Severiano can't figure out how that girl would dare hit Candela. "I hit her first. She didn't like me saying that she and her mother are a couple of sluts, and that she should leave Cristobal alone." "What do you mean leave him alone? They barely know each other." Candela says Aldonza moves fast and she's already set her eye on Cristobal. She'd rather die than let history repeat itself. Severiano agrees they can't let that happen. "That girl turned out to be as much of a social climber as her mother." "Luckily my son isn't as shameless as you are. But that's not enough. Those snakes are clever and he's too innocent." Severiano is sure Cristobal won't pay any attention to her. "This wouldn't be happening if you'd thrown those people out when you had the chance!" Severiano denies that his power extends that far. She says it's just that he doesn't have the "pantalones" (pants; doesn't have the guts) to do it.
Dominga busts Lola listening at the door and drags her away by the ear. She tries to say that it IS her business because Aldonza is her friend. Dominga says there's enough gossip going on in this town already.
Aldonza keeps insisting to Adelina that there's more going on than what they're telling her. "OK, so what do you think the secret is?" Aldonza doesn't know, but she's determined to find out. "If you knew something, you wouldn't hide it from me." Adelina says she'd never do anything to hurt Aldonza. Which is not the same thing, but I'm not sure if Aldonza realizes that.
Roberta visits Padre Geronimo in his office. "Don't be expecting a confession or a bunch of breast-beating like all the hypocrites in this town. There's nothing you can do for me. There's no saving my soul. But my house and my lands and El Santuario…I'm asking you to help me save Aldonza's birthright. I mortgaged the property and I don't have any way to pay it. I'm about to lose it." Padre G sighs sadly, but he doesn't seem all that surprised.
Lola is waiting outside Las Animas as Cristobal comes home. She has to tell him something, but she doesn't want him to think she's a gossip. "Too late for that!" Ha! I like these kids! "Seriously! I just want to warn you. I don't know how, but your mom and Aldonza se agarraron a moquetes" (punched each other in the nose). And the whole mess seems to be about him. The sound cuts out as Lola, presumably, explains what she heard.
Padre Geronimo asks why she did it. "Oh, save it! I don't want a sermon. It's done." He doesn't know how he can help, since he doesn't have money. "But you have influence! You can talk to the bank and buy me some time. You're a respectable person…they wouldn't deny you a favor." But how would she pay it back? Who would give her the money? And in exchange for what? "I don't know why I came. I knew you'd end up putting me down, just like always, just like everyone!" Padre G asks her not to leave. He apologizes for offending her, but asks her to understand that what she did hurt him. He says he'll see what he can do.
Cristobal goes into Candela's room and says it's true what he heard. "No, I didn't hear it from Aldonza. Lola told me. And before I go talk to Aldonza, I came to ask you to explain it to me." Candela is upset that he's demanding explanations from her. "Just don't get involved with that woman." Cristobal says they don't have a relationship, but if they did, it would be his business. "What? Nononononono…."
Tomorrow: Fire in the orchard, Aldonza and Cristobal in danger, Roberta stressing.
Labels: sombra
I like all the youngsters. They all seem to know their own mind and are pushing back on these adults trying to run their lives. Even delusional Valeria.
More clues-- Candela treats Emmanuel like gum on her shoe and he pops up right after Sever mentions to Roberta what their "dead daughter" would have looked like.
How did you forget to mention the cheek kiss initiated by Cris along with the handshake with Aldonza? He's smooth, that one. :)
I absolutely LOVED how Aldonza slapped Candela back. I'm liking Aldonza ALOT.
It took GATA until the final week to FINALLY slap Lorenza on the show that shall not be named.
Another excellent episode. This show is soooo good. It's a real treat after what we had to endure with the show that shall not be named.
I'm liking Cristobal ALOT too. He's definitely no dummy - he knows something is up with his parents.
GO ALDONZA!
Gracias, Mauricio...oh, yeah, I'm Team Aldonza, all the way!
Roberta is repellent but I feel sorry for her and am secretly cheering for her. Does that make me a sick puppy?
Best moment of the show: the Chris-Aldonza handshake. Hands down. And it looked like Chris was going to kiss her, but the camera panned over to the side so you couldn't really see it. But it's there, in my brain. :o)
Creepiest moment of the show: Sever saying what a toothsome morsel Aldonza is. (Shudder!)
J in Oregon
WAY TO GO ALDONZA!!! I loved the timing of it. It was PERFECTO!
I'm liking these two (Aldonza and Cristobal).
Vivi, I agree that the scene between the Padre and Roberta needs to be pondered. I loved the scene. It was very well acted.
I initially asked if Roberta had a "diagnosis". Tonight, I read everyone's comments from yesterday. There were some really good thoughts there.
For now, I am going to say that Roberta is simply selfish, self-centered, impulsive, insensitive with some degree of self loathing. No one calls themselves "basura" and not be in a world of hurt.
There is much more to Roberta's story than we are getting now.
There was a glimmer of hope in her eyes when she went to see her brother in law. I think it took a lot for her to do that and I was happy she did it.
I cannot say enough good things about Susana in this role.
After the mess of The Show That Shall NEVER Be Named, this one is almost unbelievable!
More tomorrow.
Fatima
well, now we know for sure that feisty Al is not a turn-the-other-cheek kind of girl.
I have decided to give up on the ten o'clock show which is getting too dark and hopeless and just concentrate on this one.
Vivi...Studies have been done that show our brains keep working on ideas and problems while we sleep. This morning , I awoke with a new thought about something that is happening in my life.
I am liking how Chris and Aldonza are starting out. Chris correctly says that the vendetta has nothing to do with them. Aldonza isn't so sure, but agrees to be friends anyway.
I thought the scene at the swimming hole was cute. Chris stumbling on the scene, enjoying seeing Aldonza in her state of undress, but turning his back so she could dress and compose herself.
Is Roberta about to make a 180 and become a diligent steward of her daughter's patrimony?
Loved Aldonza slapping Candy. That chick has some force behind her outrage, and won't be easily cast aside. Plus, this is the first time for years that Candela has been thwarted.
David
I actually felt like naming our heroine so uniquely was brilliant. When Cristobal told Padre J that he was interested in Aldonza it's crystal clear who he means. Can't do that with a Maria. Lol.
Sev is a pig.
Valeria and Prudencia are well cast as I think there is quite a resemblance.
Like the rest of you I LOVE our young leads. So far they are feisty and as it says in the title they give as good as they get.
I still contend that Roberta has incredibly low self-esteem (she called herself trash) and that she approaches every dealing with others with that attitude. "Who would want me? Who would like me? The men only want sex. They hate me anyway. Why bother trying?"
Kat mentioned the other day that the earliest a tablet could have been around is 2010. Aldonza still needs to go to university, right?
Soo... Candela is pushing Sever to get rid of Roberta and her household. That could happen in the next few episodes and then we could have another jump to present day. In the interim Aldonza can finish school.
"Aldonza heads for El Santuario to give Cristobal an eyeful of real natural beauty ifyouknowwhatImeanandIthinkyoudo", "Annnnnnnd, the moment is over" and "Severiano says he'll end up with all of it even if he has to sell his soul to the devil. Well, that's news--I didn't think he had one" were among my many favorites.
Your embedded vocabulary was a treat. Excellent title!
I am with everyone who stated they were pleased Aldonza "gave what she got"! susanlynn, no Aldonza is not a "turn the cheek kind of gal" HA! While I generally hold to a respect your elders mantra, I have to admit I smiled broadly. You go girl! And Mauricio, the blood on Candela's teeth was a nice touch indeed!
David, you are onto something. She is the first person to stand up to icy Candela, isn't she?
I am in agreement Vivi that Roberta was deeply affected by her talk with the good Padre. She has made terrible mistakes and choices but I don't believe she is irredeemable (J in Oregon, I do like her in spite of everything). I am also worried that (by her own assertion) she would give up her life for her daughter but to be honest, I don't exactly envision a long and happy life for Roberta. I really hope I am wrong (I usually am).
But mi amiga Fatima has captured the essence of Roberta perfectly by "No one calls themselves "basura" and not be in a world of hurt". There are even more terrible secrets buried beneath the surface I fear.
Sev is a "pig" is right Sara. My stomach literally lurched when he eyed Aldonza. What an incredible acting job Alexis is doing.
Pru was having her share of wardrobe malfunctions last night. Between trying to keep the shoulder of her blouse at the right angle and trying to hide her bra strap, I am surprised she was able to concentrate on her lines.
Kat, so nice to hear Mr. 5ft's comments. Keep them coming. Also, when you can, let us know what exciting things are going on with your career.
Diana
I mean, we are barely a week or so in and we get not one but TWO amazing slaps! No milquetoasts are these two women, there was some major windups before hitting the targets.
I love that we aren't seeing the naïve, clueless young 'uns we often get in shows who just believe whatever from the messed up parents and get trampled on until well into the TN. These kids are sharp and challenging already.
Loved the waterfall scene. Maybe we should change Cris' nickname to Mr. SmoothMoves.
I just love watching Alexis when he gets into that sleazy character mode. He gives it just the right amount of EWWW without becoming cartoonish. And he sure knows what buttons to push with both the women in his life. Which makes him a major target by both I would think.
Daisynjay
Gawd when he gets all lascivious about Aldonza it makes me nauseous.
I'm HIGH on the slap!!!! Yess!! Yah, Aldonza! I'm loving this Girl and hope she stays smart and feisty with that SPINE firmly in place! She took after Roberta and I LOVED her approving look in the background as much as Candela's look of shock and bloody nose!
YES!!! Ok. On to the recap!
"after undressing her with his eyes one last time, I kid you not!"
Roberta - hating you turns me on
Christobal - smooth you bet, I got Barry White as my ring tone
Aldonza - you must have confused me with a limp rag, bitch
Padre Geronimo - trash cleaner upper
Val - not sure I saw what I saw but I saw it
Prudencia - ah, the finer things, bottle of booze, a phone and a lit'l dirt
Emmanuel - barking up the wrong tree
Lola - double agent
Candela - who knew cats bite when you pull their tail
Severiano - Hello, I'm Johnny Trash
I am going to argue here that it is more than "some degree" of self-loathing.
I also also think saying she is selfish, self-centered, impulsive and insensitive over simplifies it. I think it is more complicated than that.
I think there is a HUGE degree of self-loathing and such crippling self-doubt and disgust that she is very calculatingly pushing people away. She believes she is trash and she does not believe people when they try to help. In fact, it probably makes her hate them more. "I know you're full of crap, you lying bastard. I know I'm trash, so shut up."
I am really bad at expressing myself, but by seeing her as just a run-of-the-mill, all-about-me person we completely ignore what is probably some clinical mental issues.
Triple slap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga6DN2lA3mI
Have to say, these poor Padres in these TN dramas. What they don't have to put up with and do.
Daisynjay
(I assume she means "a bitter, angry woman who drinks alone in the afternoon and has the whole town talking behind her back" and not "a sexy bitch who can rock a red dress like nobody's business").
Diva, thank you for this delightful and detailed rendition of last night's action! I had been worried about being able to get into a new story and especially recap one but your enthusiasm and skill in telling this story has made all the worries melt away! (Unlike the snow outside my door)
Love those two quotes above and the whole thing as well.
The slap? Oh, we sooooo deserve this after having to endure a so-called leading lady who made herself a doormat to her shrew of a mother-in-law. Candela is no where near being a suegra but she set her straight with that slap! The NERVE of Candela! That very act shows who she thinks she is and Aldonza redefined Candela's status in relationship to her and asserted her own. You. Frickin'. Go GIRL!!!
Thank you Diva, on to comments!
Diana
I have been thinking of Severed as the one armed bandit.
I would agree that there is much more than we see, but how nice that we have a character with depth.
I've simply decided I don't want to give her a bona fide "label", until I see more.
Fatima
Christobal - smooth you bet, I got Barry White as my ring tone
Severiano - Hello, I'm Johnny Trash
:D
Candela didn't realize that being slapped by a crazy older lady is a pretty regular occurrence for Aldonza.
That slap firmly established the pecking order and Aldonza is NOT on the bottom!
Oooo, Lilo---who's on the bottom do you think?
But if he's not--that's great too since it shows he's got acting chops. :-)
There's a difference between the common usage and the way those words are used in the mental health field. The common usage adds a LOT of baggage and, frankly, insult, and often gets used in harmful ways. That doesn't mean that when a mental health professional offers a diagnosis that that's a BAD thing. Mental health professionals don't label people. When they diagnose a condition, they're saying "The symptoms this person is reporting to me and/or the behaviors I have observed meet the criteria for _____." Behaviors and reported symptoms...not the person.
The problem is, we don't usually go around saying things like "I just got back from the therapist and she says my symptoms are consistent with a diagnosis of Bipolar II Disorder with psychotic features." which sounds fairly formal and complicated...but accurate and neutral and kind of hard to use to insult someone with--I mean, can you picture kids being that wordy on the playground? What we say is "The therapist says I'm Bipolar." and that is the kind of pithy statement that's easy to throw around and misuse. But the answer isn't for people to stop getting the help they need for fear of a diagnosis. The answer is for us, as a society, to stop being jerks.
Related to this is the idea of "person-first language." Which means that we don't talk about someone who "is ________" we talk about being a "person with ____________" to avoid defining someone by their condition. It's something to think about, but it's not universally accepted. Some people with conditions that are really pervasive to their entire lives feel that person-first language isn't accurate for them. (Google "person first language autism" for one such debate.)
As for Roberta, her symptoms may not meet the criteria for something as pervasive as a personality disorder, and they may not even meet criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder, but she sure as heck is in distress, as much as she tries to play it off. And when someone is in distress or is finding it difficult to function, that's when it would probably be helpful to visit a mental health professional. And I wouldn't have thought so until the conversation with Padre G, because until then, I didn't know if she really gave a rat's ass or was even very self aware. Now I'm more confident...Roberta doesn't like the way she's feeling. That's plenty of reason to ask for help.
This is a small town, and one big man on campus, and one family ostensibly at odds, plenty of gossip that oozes out of their pores and boredom creates opportunity, and not one person, ever mused to Aldonza what could be the problem? She knows the town thinks her mom a tart, sure the kids in school were merciless and no telling the graffiti scrawled under the bleachers.
"As for Roberta, her symptoms may not meet the criteria for something as pervasive as a personality disorder, and they may not even meet criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder, but she sure as heck is in distress, as much as she tries to play it off."
I know I'm often guilty of blowing things out of proportion and trying to think of some wild and dramatic diagnosis (it is a TN after all.)
Roberta is definitely in distress, so "disorder" is a strong word. It makes me sad that she is in distress and everyone around her seems to judge her and that she seems to alienate the few people she does have (Adelina, Padre J.)
I think I want to try and "label" it because I feel like that will make it easier to deal with. "You have an ear infection. We'll prescribe an antibiotic." Unfortunately, mental health is all kinds of shades of gray and points on a spectrum and hard to pinpoint. I assume treatment can also be tricky. AND we are talking about small, rural town.
Speaking of which....
Yes, tofie! I kind of find it hard to believe that Aldonza really doesn't have some inkling of a clue. You know the townsfolk were talking like crazy folks when Sever lost an arm the same night Ray died. Tongues were probably really wagging when Roberta started to show signs of her pregnancy.
What everyone in the town gossips about is Roberta being a ho in general, and Aldonza knows that. As far as everyone knows, Roberta hates Sever with the heat of a thousand suns.
(Not important, just trying to arrange things in my mind.)
susanlynn, gracias! I want to say "welcome to the dark side" but I guess if the late show is dark, then we're the sort-of-overcast side. Whatever...we have drinks!
gracias, David! I think Roberta will *try* to be more responsible, I'm just not sure how long she can keep that up. Or how much impact it would make even if she did try really hard. But that would be something to see.
gracias, Sara! Valeria and Prudencia are in their own little universe! I was sitting there sputtering "That's not how it happened!" And I was really pissed that she would make that remark about Aldonza stripping down right in front of him and be SO COMPLETELY CONVINCED! Really, Val? Aldonza would do that? Since when?
gracias, Diana! The vocabulary is a treat for me as well, after endless repititions of nothing but insults. Er, that may be why I'm kind of ignoring all the nasty names Prudencia is calling Aldonza. Been there, heard that, the beads were bigger, moving on. I actually have spent all damn morning updating my calendars with all my rehearsal and performance times. The performance stuff is publicly available here. I have American Dreamer coming up again in March, then a concert with the Chorus in April at Carnegie Hall, then a couple more Chorus performances in Phoenix in May and June. And then I might get a break :)
Steve, I'll take your word for it.
Gracias, Daisynjay! I wonder if Cristobal comes by it naturally or if he took some special classes over in Spain. Tuition money well spent!
gracias, tofie! Johnny Trash! I know everybody else already said it, but I don't care! It's funny!
gracias, Lila! I sure do feel we're being amply rewarded for our previous suffering. Just play the pool scene again with your door open and that ought to melt everything right?
gracias, emeraldrose! Diego was one of the creepy guys stalking Aldonza? I'll have to keep an eye on him.
Did I miss anybody?
I'm loving this show. These guys are pros and have provoked this stimulating and fun exchange!
Got a few more minutes to pretend to work myself!
:D
People who know Sever and Roberta had an affair and a baby: Sever, Roberta, Adelina, Candela, Humberto.
People who know the baby isn't dead (we know this will be the case): Sever, Humberto, Candela.
People who know Sever had something to do with Ray's death/Ray had something to do with Sever's arm: Sever, Roberta, Adelina, Candela.
People who suspect Sever had something to do with Ray's death/Ray had something to do with Sever's arm: Humberto, Dominga, Melesio.
People who know Sever murdered Padre Sixto: Sever, Humberto, Roberta.
People who suspect, know, assume, gossip about Roberta being a ho: The whole damn town.
That was just my PSA about not feeling bad about asking for help. Which I probably could have said with a lot fewer words :)
What was the point of having Pru go back to Los Olvidos? If she was just going to end up back in Santa Lucia, why make a deal about her going back? Especially since they have her back AND with a daughter to boot.
AND if Emmanuel (or is it just Manuel?) *is* Roberta's still-born daughter, what did Humberto do with him until Pru came back? And did the town have NOTHING to say about that? Are they so fixated on Roberta?
Off to the dentist for a crown. Would much rather hang out on the patio this afternoon.
Like you, I do want to "know" what something "is" or "is not". If I know what it is, then I can interact better with it. Case in point: I am sure one of my staff has some considerable issues. I don't want to dig into the personal life, but it would help all of us to find better ways to work with them.
I fully understand how a label could be helpful.
Fatima
Someone mentioned time jump. A summary I read (man, they tell too much!) leads me to believe this may still happen and maybe we're not in the present yet.
If that sounds like a spoiler, Diva, please delete it. And your "PSA" was perfect!
Sara, this is complex and as for the bottom, they may not know it now but that position belongs to Candi and Sever!
Like others, LOVE that our leading couple are NO WIMPS!!
Vivi, loved your list. I asked myself the very hard question that if anyone else other than Susana was playing Roberta, would I still be as sympathetic? The answer is a resounding no. But, she is, I am and that's that!
Diana
Yup. Definitely the town gossip!
Fatima-I am so glad you didn't think I was trying to argue and I'm glad you understood what I was trying to say.
GENERAL STATEMENT-I have been very guilty of thinking that Emmanuel is the still-born daughter and I think when I comment I come off as saying it like fact. For anyone just joining us, I am just ASSuming (*ifyouknowwahtImean*)
Next dumb question: Humberto had to tell Pru something, didn't he? Am I to think he just said that the baby was some foundling and Pru took him in? I think she asked questions and I think she knows something.
hmmm. But then again, she is a big mouth and a lush. She would have squealed by now.
Despite her flaws she looks FABULOUS.
However, if you did read something that specifically said there would be a time jump and then reported it here (even though you hadn't seen the alleged episodes that may or may not exist), then that would be a spoiler, so if that's the case then then (a) don't do it again and (b) don't say so now because then we'll know!
It's a spoiler if
-You saw it and it hasn't aired in the US yet and you say "THIS is going to happen."
-You read somewhere that something is going to happen and you say "I read that THIS is going to happen." (regardless of the reliability of the source)
-Basically, if you assert that something is going to happen, regardless of whether you saw it first-hand or are reporting it second-hand, it's a spoiler.
Guesses and speculation are not spoilers.
"You're really going to want to watch the next episode." "Don't worry, it gets better in about a week." "We're not going to be seeing anything this exciting for another 12 episodes." --not exactly spoilers, due to the lack of actual information, though I'd rather not see anything like that, because it's like the long-distance equivalent of sitting next to that guy in the movie theater who has already watched the movie five times and he keeps nudging you saying "Ooh, check out this part!" (This actually happened once...the guy was also drunk...and fell asleep on my shoulder at one point.)
Clear as mud? :D
Am I missing anything in differentiating a "spoiler" from "not a spoiler"?
Re: the possibility of a second time jump, I noticed that when we were in the past, they used some sort of filter. We had a dark ring at the outer edges of the picture. That's gone now, so I took that to mean that we're in the present. Because if they jump again, then it seems a little inconsistent to indicate "past" with a filter, then "past but not quite as long ago" with no filter, and then "ok now we're really in the present" with what?
Thanks Diva for your excellent professional quality recap.
I swear I saw flames in Candela's eyes or maybe that was the reflection from the window.
Liar. I think it's that you've got a girlfriend out there who's waiting for you to come back to her.
To great parts of your recap Diva but I must say that there were several others. It's just that I can't name them all.
The double slap was a highlight of last night's show. I, as well as everyone else out on the patio just loved it. Wow! Aldonza may be young but she's a tough cookie
isn't she? She isn't about to let Ms. Ice Queen slap/knock her around. Aldonza's got spunk and beauty too. I joined the Team Aldonza last night. She's impressive.
Roberta would die for the happiness of her daughter. Are the writers telling us something? Susana has but a short stint here in La Sombra.
Will she loose her lands? There is no money. That would be a terrible loss, waterfall, swimming hole and all. Please no!
A fire tonight---must see tv.
Will Cris save Aldonza or the other way around? I can't wait.
the gringo
So yeah. Maybe there won't be a jump. I guess I just want Aldonza to finish school. It's the teacher in me.
I don't think I would.
Question:Do we know for sure that Candela knows Roberta's baby lived? I can't watch all the episodes cause I don't have cable but I've been wondering about that.
I like Aldonza and can't help but feel sorry for her, can you imagine how awful it must be to spend your whole life hearing awful things about your mother? How much longer can she take the abuse from 99% of the town?
There was some discussion the other day about how far along in her education Aldonza is, I did some research and "prepa" is a mix of highschool and vocational school- that seems about right because both Aldonza and Lola were talking about how they could get jobs as secretaries because they had training with typing.
I'm not sure if Candela actually knows. Because while she gave him instructions beforehand, when he got home she didn't want to talk about it. But if she doesn't know-know, then she must at least be suspicious about Humberto just randomly taking in a kid who would be about the right age.
As it looks now, Sev and Humberto are the active participants and Cande has plausible deniability. "I never told them to do such a horrible thing as get rid of the baby and leave her sterile!"
Even Roberta and Adelina couldn't say it was Cande. She wasn't there.
So does Sev really have anything on Cande?
Maybe the monthly payoff is child support and once Prudencia knew they'd have extra income from taking in the child she was happy enough not to care, but not so happy she was actually going to treat him well?
I think the writers are trying to trick us with these all young adults appearing out of nowhere..Val,Emmanuel, Lola. We saw no pregnancies except Roberta's . If Val is the disappeared Bebe, she is pursuing her half brother and setting herself up as her half sister's rival. That would be very interesting. Perhaps Emmanuel is just a (good looking) red herring.
