La Sombra del Pasado #67 - Wed 5/20 - More cryin' and lyin'

Aldonza finally gets escorted out of Cris' cell.

Per Mel: since Sev is out of town, Soletario hasn't been sold yet.  Emmanuel is prepared to go to Severiano as soon as he's back in town to make him an offer he can't refuse.  Melesio advises him not to do it RIGHT when Sev gets back into town or it might end up backfiring.  Yeah, what with all the other stuff he'll have to deal with.

Pato goes over to the Padre's pad to visit Lola.  He's sure she must be feeling down what with Abelardo's funeral, and her previous fight with her grandparents.  He invites her to dinner, but it's been a long day for her, so she begs off.  They'l have dinner tomorrow.

Tomas is in the cantina drowning his sorrows, with no one but a random cantina patron and the bartender to console him.  He's genuinely mourning his friend.  The bartender: YOLO.  Tomas: bring the whole bottle of tequila over here.  This is his idea of "living"?  But, wait, there's more!  He wants to go take a serenata to the woman he loves.  Well, that's…better…I guess.  With that, Tomas, the tequila bottle, and dude at the table are off.

Pato goes over to Mari's to give her his condolences.  She sobs, they hug.  Crap…they're listening in on the patio again.

Don Oscar, aka dude at the bar, aka dude who brings it with the guitar and the singing.  He starts in with "Historia de un Amor."   I'm sad they cut it off, but glad they gave us a little serenata variety ("Volver" is the usual "baby come back!" song).  And I must say, Tomas is holding his own with Don Oscar, there (whose something-something certainly increased when he started singing).

Back at the parish house, Padre J tells Adelina that Cris should be out soon, but not yet.  Aldonza insisted on staying at the police station, along with Emmanuel.  And speaking of Emmanuel…is Adelina sure that Roberta's baby was a girl?  Is there any possibility it was a boy?  Adelina had never thought about it before.  Padre J says if it could have been a boy, then that baby could be…Emmanuel!

Don Oscar and Tomas are tugging at my heartstrings, but the effect is ruined by stupid, choking Pru and clueless Val and Humberto.  Tomas finally tells Don Oscar they should go.  She has a husband and she's never coming out, and her husband is huge, and he has a gun.  They go running off across the square.  Humberto appears, looks around, and goes back inside.

Adelina thinks Padre J is getting obsessed.  Padre J brings logic into this…the age is right, Humberto delivered the baby, soon after he took in a baby and raised it as his own.  Adelina reminds him that yesterday's theory was that Lola was "the baby."  "Did you SEE her?  Couldn't it be that Humberto and Severiano lied to you?"  Adelina refuses to continue the conversation.  But Padre J is not letting go of this!

The entire crew spending the night at the police station includes Renato, Aldonza, Melesio, and Emmanuel.  Renato talks a little bit about the new law office/house.  Mel says they'll finally have a trusted lawyer.  Aldonza doesn't want to talk about Mis Planes at the moment.  Renato tries to back up Emmanuel and say that Aldonza should go home.  But if she won't go home, they won't leave her there alone.  They gossip about Cande.  She apparently did get in to see Cris and there was plenty of fussing when she did!  Cande is still outside Cris' cell…lemme repeat that…OUTSIDE…and how sad is that that he has more personal space inside jail than in his own house?...crying about how unfair this is and how it's all Uriel and his family's fault.  Cris tells her to chill, it's been a really hard day for them and Cande, I kid you not, says "No harder than it's been for you or me."  No, Cande…just, no.  Cris begs her not to compare and NOT to bother the Lagos family.  She runs off without actually promising, not that that would have meant anything.  Out in the lobby, she gripes at the lawyer to get her boy out NOW.  He tells her there is nothing he can do, but he'll stick around. Cande just won't budge.  Mel lurks in the background, listening in.  The lawyer begs for patience and Cande grunts while everyone else just looks worried and Aldonza cries.

Sev drops Simoneta at home and drives off as soon as she's gotten her bag out of the back seat of the truck.

Cris remembers finding Abelardo…and the three miscreants walking by the parish house shortly before.  He calls a guard and says he has to talk to the Ministerio Publico, like NOW!

Adriano finds a bar.

Cande, tacky and selfish as ever, goes over to the Lagos' house to wake up Mari and Irma and demand that THEY drop the charges against Cris.  For those keeping score at home, under TN law, entire arson cases can be dropped if the victim asks for them to be dropped, but for murder cases, nobody has to press charges.  And indeed, Irma says they had nothing to do with it.  Cande demands that Irma do something to get him out.  Irma reminds Cande that she just buried her son today, so Cande's going to have to forgive her if she really doesn't have the energy to deal with anything else.  "Sorry, but we can't help you.  Show a little manners and respect and get out of here."  Cande finally leaves and Irma allows herself to collapse and be comforted by Mari.

Cris tells the MP about seeing the three guys near the parish house, hearing them arguing…he doesn't remember what they looked like.  The MP brings up the guy who came looking for Lardo, according to Uriel, but he's not sure this is enough to release Cris.  "You've got no proof!" Cris reminds him.  "Hey, don't start!"  He tells Cris to just keep telling him what he remembers.  One said something about "he put the noose around his neck himself" and another one said "We'll have to figure out how to get out of this one."  The MP says this doesn't help much.  Cris had never seen them before and asks to be released.  Nope, the MP will investigate first, and then they'll see.

Sev shows up at the police station and goes directly to Aldonza to blame her while undressing her with his eyes.  The clues are flying as Emmanuel steps in to defend Aldonza again, gets in Sev's face, and Sev says "I'm glad you turned out as feisty as…"  As what, Sev?  Sev says he won't waste time arguing with Emmanuel.  Renato wants in on the  getting-in-Sev's-face action too, but Aldonza pulls him back.  Once again, Sev's eyes travel all over Aldonza's body as he (barely) listens to her telling the guys to back off.  The MP invites him into his office to talk and Aldonza tells the guys they might as well leave.

Candela gets home and tells Dominga there's nothing to report.  Cris is in jail and there's nothing she can do.  She thought she could deal with anything, but...nobody at the police station caaaaaaaaaaares that she's Candela Rivero!  Aww, poor Cande!  Being treated like a normal person and not allowed to use her position and money to cheat the system…how awful that must feel!  Oh, how I weep for you!  [Insert solo played on world's tiniest violin here.]  Yeah, sure, Sev finally showed up, but clearly he cares more about being with his mistress than helping his son, Cande huffs!

Sev tells the cops it's his gun, but Lardo might have stolen it, since he knew where it was kept.  "So did your son."  The cop asks if he knew about the problem Lardo and Cris had.  Sev ignores the lawyer, who says that Sev doesn't have to answer right now, and says someone beat up Lardo, but it wasn't Cris.  It was guys he owed money to.  Sure, the kids had their arguments, but Lardo fought with a LOT of people.  Lardo told him.  And Sev paid some of his gambling debts…since Lardo was his employee, and his friend's son, and he needed help.  The PM brings up the accusation that Sev had him killed to cover up the arson in the DF.  Sev blows his stack and says it's just Aldonza blaming him for everything again.  Neither Sev nor Cris killed Lardo!  The PM says Lardo can't confirm that and Sev could be lying.  Plus, they have that super-reliable anonymous tip.  The lawyer mocks him for depending on anonymous tips.  The PM says they have to wait for the FINGERPRINT analysis, to see if Cris touched the gun.  The gun that (and this has been bothering me for days now) is in what looks like a plain 'ol Ziploc bag with no evidence tag and no seal.  And since Santa Lucia doesn't have the lab facilities to check the gun for fingerprints themselves [tighten beanie, tighten beanie], they have to send the gun to the DF first thing in the morning [head explodes, beanie pops off, recapper wishes for alcohol, but it's FAR too late].  Hey, anybody want to guess how this "investigation" is going to get screwed up next?  Loser buys a round at the Naughty Melon.  No takers?  Ok, then.

Pru remembers the serenata…and Tomas refusing to let go of her hand over the coffin…she asks her reflection what to do.

Lola gets ready in the morning and hears what happened at the police station last night.  Lola realizes that Simoneta must be back in town, if Sev is back in town, too.  She wants to go confront Simoneta and she's not ready to talk to her grandparents yet.  Aldonza scolds her.

Cande and Sev snipe at each other in the living room.  Sev thinks Cris is getting out today.  Cande confronts him about shagging Simoneta in the DF.  Cande's not going to do anything, but Simoneta is just using him for money…and to get close to her daughter.  "Oh, you hadn't heard?"  Sev thinks the girl died as a child.  Cande smiles broadly and tells him "the girl" is Dolores Otero Saavedra…that's right, Lola.  Melesio and Dominga's granddaughter.

Dominga is tired this morning.  She didn't sleep all night…because of Cris and because of Lola.  "A veces le duele uno mas el cuero que la camisa." (Sometimes it's your skin that hurts more than your shirt; it's the things that are closest to you that concern you the most.)  Dominga remembers how Lola ignored them in the church.  Melesio thinks it's normal that she's this upset right now and she will forgive them, but she needs time.  A few days aren't enough for a lie so big.  "Remember how many times she asked for the truth and we didn't tell her."  Dominga says she'll die of sadness if Lola doesn't forgive them.

Sev stubbornly insists that Lola is an orphan and her parents died in a car crash.  Cande, still smiling, says her mother did die--she abandoned her.  "I have no reason to lie to you.  Ask Melesio…or your beloved Señora Saavedra…she can't deny it now.  It makes you angry, doesn't it?  That woman deceived YOU…you who thinks you're SO good at manipulating women, right?  Admit it--you were made a fool of!  Instead of getting aggressive, you should thank me.  I did you a favor, opening your eyes….  Oh, and she also lied about her name.  It's not Simoneta…it's Viviana."  I so want to enjoy Sev getting told that he's been PLAYED…but that also just increased the likelihood that Simoneta/Viviana is going to be facing some violence soon.

Aldonza approaches Irma outside her house and asks to speak to her.  She wants her to know that Cris didn't kill Abelardo.  He's incapable of hurting anyone.  She just wants to beg Irma for help.  Irma tiredly tells Aldonza that she had nothing to do with the accusation and if he's innocent, he'll be released.  Unlike Cande, all Aldonza does is cry.  Irma even comforts her and asks her not to cry, but Aldonza just feels so helpless.

Pru runs into Mopey!Valeria's bedroom to tell her that Cris was really, for realz, arrested.  "What good is that to me?"  Uh, maybe you should've thought of that before you called the cops?  Pru tries to tell her to perk up…she's gotta get that man back before Aldonza gets herself knocked up.  "Shut up, mom."  Pru doesn't take the hint.  Val has to get out of there, but she won't say where she's going.  After more scolding from Pru, Val softens and says she's going to go see Mari and apologize for not going to Abelardo's burial.

Lola goes to talk to Simoneta…or should I say, "Viviana Simoneta Saavedra."  Lola says she'd rather not have known.  It hurt to find out her mother abandoned her.  Viv/Sim says there's no excuse.  She was young and immature and she didn't appreciate her…when she finally wised up, Lola was living with her grandparents.  Hey, Lola can be angry at her grandparents, but nobody else is allowed to talk smack about them!  They're her real parents!  They raised her, they loved her!  Simoneta doesn't get to call her "daughter" and she will never forgive her…NEVER!  Simoneta is a stranger to her.  Simoneta may have given birth to her, but a real mother doesn't do what she did and she'd rather keep thinking her mother is buried somewhere in Durango.  "I only came to talk to you face to face and to tell you to forget about me and never bother me again."  Simoneta begs for Lola to give her a chance, but Lola just glares and walks out.  [Nice job, ladies!]

Padre J and Adelina are arguing, yet again, about "Roberta's baby."  Padre J is going to confront Humberto and ask directly if Em is "the baby."  Adelina is worried about what's going to happen if they found out he is…how will this affect Aldonza.  "How about the way it's affected Emmanuel?!  Don't you see him suffering from not having a family?  You see how Lola is suffering from being lied to for so many years?   LET'S BRING THE TRUTH TO LIGHT ALREADY AND END ALL THIS SUFFERING!"  Adelina begs him to understand that she's afraid of Aldonza's reaction.  "She's not a child!  She's old enough to understand anything, no matter how terrible it might be!  Don't underestimate her!"  Adelina starts to argue, but Aldonza walks in and everybody shuts up.  Padre J claims he was telling Adelina that he doesn't need to be looked after anymore and the should go back to their house, but Adelina insists on staying.  And it's not good for a priest to be living with a bunch of women.  Padre J's an awfully good liar for somebody who's so upset about all the lying going on…just saying.  Aldonza says they'll be outta his priestly hair today.  Padre J says he's off.  Things to do, people to see.  Aldonza turns on her aunt for arguing with her uncle when they'd already agreed to move back to the house.  "Well, I don't think he's totally recovered yet, but he's just as stubborn as you are."  Aldonza tells her about the conversation with Irma.

Cande whines at Cris' jail cell again.  Cris is surprised to hear that Severiano is trying to help him when he was so pissed off at him.  And why?  When Sev is running around with…yeah, Cande knows.  She tells him that Sim DARED to throw it in her face, but whatever...she's sure they'll be breaking up soon.  "Hey, did Valeria come visit you?"  What for?  Cande talks about how Val is so worried about him and still loves him and is the only woman who can make him happy.  "Don't talk smack about Aldonza!"  Cande backs down and the guard, finally done checking Cande's bag of treats, allows her to go into the cell and give it to Cris in person, along with a kiss and a blessing.

Sev greets a crying Simoneta with a backhanded slap and ugly words.  He seems offended that he was sleeping with a woman who used to be married to the son of his workers.  Simoneta tells him she had no idea that he was the owner of Las Animas when they met.  He's angry that she didn't tell him "the truth" and Simoneta, with no heat, points out that he never cared about her life.  "You should have told me!"  He claims that he's never lied to her or deceived her.  He grabs her by the hair and throws her on the floor and we're left with the unpleasant mental image of Simoneta crawling while Sev glowers.

Plenty to discuss about tonight's episode without bringing up the previews...I know, I know, it's just so tempting! Resist, please.

Diva, I am thrilled to see this huge, bountiful recap up so quickly! Thank you so much--your witty commentary always adds an extra layer of understanding and enjoyment.

Favorite: "and how sad is that that he (Chris) has more personal space inside jail than in his own house?". Oh yeah, plus Cande can't get in there to slap him upside the head, what a relief that must be.

Funniest: Tomas' drunken serenade, cutting back and forth to Pru's diversionary tactics inside the house. I still say the writers will have Tomas go to the light (he could become Padre Tomas). Since the writers seem to have planted a bug on the patio, it could happen!

J in Oregon

Gracias, Kat; this is great.

Adelina should be more concerned about what Sev might do if the truth came to light. Emmanuel would be entitled to half his assets when he goes back to Hell because now that there is DNA evidence he has far less to say about the disposition of his assets than he would have back in the days of Juan del Diablo (whose padre natural tried to Do The Right Thing). This would put Emmanuel's life in danger because it's clear that Sev doesn't give a flying damn about him.

Considering that we're just about at the halfway mark what I see happening is this:

Padre J confronts Humberto who then finally asks if he can confess. Padre J considers that an offer he can't refuse and listens to him. Humberto confesses what he and Sev did. He took Emmanuel out of a sense of guilt and both men kept their mouths shut all these years. Candela didn't want to know anything because all she cared about was the scandal and that Cristobal get the entire inheritance when the time came. Humberto now feels even more guilty that he failed to prevent Pru and Val from unleashing their vitriol against Emmanuel all these years.

Of course, the good Padre will urge Hum to tell Emmanuel the truth, but Hum won't do so because this plot point is too big to not save for a later reveal. He will say that this would put his own life in danger because Sev has killed before to protect his own secrets.

Following the pattern of the other situations it would be better for this reveal to happen after Sev is either on his way to prison or back to Satan so that Emmanuel would be safe from him. Cristobal would Do The Right Thing and also welcome him as a brother. The wild card then would be Candela because we would need to worry whether she would try to kill Emmanuel because of her hatred for Roberta.

In the short term, what should happen is Emmanuel going to work for whomever buys Solitario. That would keep him close to that lovely horse and get him out of the path of danger.

More later.

Kat- What a treat to wake up to your marvelous recap. Thank you, Amiga.

Adelina is resisting the idea of searching for the lost child for more than just Aldonza's reaction. She knows there's a whole Pandora's box of dark secrets that would come tumbling out after that reveal that would cast Roberta and her in a bad light, and could very well put those she loves in danger from Sever. But of course, Padre J is right, and this the truth will out eventually. Better sooner than later. Looking forward to seeing him confront Humberto about Eman.

I just about fell out of my chair and my jaw dropped open when Cande compared her pain to the Lagos family's. And again she she actually had the nerve to show up in the middle of the night and make demands of them. Wow!

Loved the serenade. And Tomas does have a nice voice too. The guy singing with him I just realized was the winner of Mexican Idol a few years back, and he and a female winner sang the Abismo de Pasion theme song.

But doesn't Aldonza already know about her mother and Sev? How does this make Adelina look bad? She never saw the allegedly dead baby and in the immediate situation she had to worry about saving Roberta's useless life. I think she's off the hook for any accusation of complicity, but she does realize the danger in the disclosure.

Of course, nobody other than Hum knows that Sev killed Padre Sixto. That's something Hum might be afraid to reveal in the confessional.

Fantastic Kat!! Thanks so much for this amazing recap of the episode.

What the heck with everyone piling on Irma? Cande's move was unforgivable, but her sense of entitlement has no bounds. This woman was supposed to be a what--sweet girl at one time. Yeah, not so sure about that. But even Allie disappointed me. Poor Irma, leave this woman in peace people. She can't do squat for Cris.

My head wanted to explode at the antics at the Keystone Kops station. Can't do the fingerprints? An anonymous tip is what they are going with and nothing else seems good enough...painful to watch.

Have to bolt for work, will check in later. But leaving with the image of Tomas running away from Hum's house....sorry folks but the man runs funny. I about spit out my coffee. Have to say he and Pru do lighten the shows. I see a real cougar hookup soon.

Ade--not everything is about Allie.

Daisynjay

Urban- Two people know Roberta murdered Raymundo. Sever and Adelina. Poke Sever too hard, and he is sure to use that information, and Adelina will be the one who gets that crap slung at her since Roberta is dead. I think Adelina sees Sever as a huge hornets nest, capable of harming her niece physically and emotionally if poked, and she doesn't want to do that.

Will finish reading recaps and comments in a moment.

Thank you so much for the recap. When Tomas and Don Oscar started singing I was so glad that you had the recap. I knew we would get a review. I don't know a thing about music, so I thought they were pretty good (And Vivi, Thanks for confirming what I thought...that Don Oscar was the other half of the AdP theme.) Glad to know a professional felt the same. Don Oscar may not have the classic good looks, but my knees went weak when he started to sing. And thank you for the song title, too!

Crap…they're listening in on the patio again.

I hope they heard some of us grumbling about Mari not being good enough for Pato. They better show me a turnaround in Mari's attitude if they want me on board the Pato/Mari ship.

I agree, Daisy.

Aldonza is tough enough to handle this. If she can look her rapist in the eye in public she can handle anything. Trust me on that. The person who needs concern in Emmanuel, who might freak at the reveal that he is the spawn of Satan and a whore. Not to mention growing up in the hell Prudencia and Valeria made the Zapata home for him.

The whole fingerprint thing is so ridiculous. This has been an ID method since Victorian times. Surely there can't be anyplace in Mexico (short of that near-ghost town in LI) where fingerprint identification is impossible. And Lardo was buried rather than cremated, so the body can be exhumed.

Another load of pain for Irma and Uriel on top of Candela's totally selfish actions last night.

That the police station doesn't have a Caller ID to know that the call came from the Zapata house at X hour is equally ridiculous when most of the citizens have cell phones with Caller ID.

Vivi, I don't remember whether Sev knows that Adelina knows. I recall Roberta confessing it to Adelina, but Sev was nowhere near them at the time.

No doubt Adelina sees Sev as a volcano waiting to erupt; he has also threatened her. So when the time comes she will have to convince the Padre that her silence was for their collective protection. That won't be difficult because he already realizes that Sev messed with his car to cause the accident and that the accident was meant to kill him.

However, he still doesn't know about the rape. Considering the agitation he showed at the realization about Emmanuel, that postpones this disclosure even more.

Recognized the singer as the Voz winner. That whole mess with Tomas will have a serio-comic ending, I'm sure.

Of course all of the folks who are having the truth hidden from them are strong enough to handle it. What the people who hold the truth are worried about is how the other person will react to THEM, in addition to not wanting to cause that person pain.

"A veces le duele uno mas el cuero que la camisa."

Thanks for the literal and the metaphoric translation for this. My ears perked up at it when I was watching the episode...but then I got lazy and went on with my business.

What is up with everyone waking up people in the middle of the night. I would not want to live in SL.

But in addition to what I said above, what makes Adelina's hiding truths different than Mel and Dominga, is that Adelina knows there is real danger involved with Sever. People could get hurt or killed if he gets mad. It's serious.

Urban- No. Sever doesn't know if Ade knows about Ray's murder. That wouldn't stop him from using that info to hurt Al, who would surely ask for confirmation from Adelina.

Vivi: Severiano is a sick twisted human being!

Gee, 5ft, this was a great rendering of last night's goings on!

I don't recall that we have had any flash backs of Cande's childhood. What factors contributed to her having such an entitled attitude toward life and everyone around her? She certainly had a chance to be a caring person with a nana like Dom.

Also, Sev the gutter snipe, whose only power comes from who he is married to, and his complete lack of a moral compass. In the short term he is to be feared, but in the long term, things pile up and become uncontrollable. He's going to be smashed like a bug.

I loved Tomas and the guitar guy singing to a choking Pru was some much needed comic relief to this weighty episode.

And, Cande still doesn't know that Cris and Aldonza are married? Oh, man! That spring keeps getting wound tighter and tighter, and will explode pretty soon. I can see Cande throwing an epic snit, and I can see Sev planning how to make his son a widower.

David

I don't think Sev is planning to kill Aldonza; he loves torturing her too much to do that (despite that it could solve his issue about the land). What he might do is tell a big fat lie that he had her first and she enjoyed it. That is the biggest danger of the secret about the rape.

Cristobal knows that Aldonza was raped, but he hasn't made the leap that it was his own father who did it. I don't know if he would because he doesn't know about the other abuses.

Padre J might figure out a way to get a DNA test comparing Cristobal and Emmanuel. If he can do that without involving Humberto and the results come back he will provide the best evidence available to show Cristobal what a monster his father really is.

Candela will also be in the path of the merde hitting the fan because she knew about it.

Thank you, Diiii-vaaah! Thanks, Girl!

Loved last night's episode and love your retelling of it!

That idiot, Tomas, can sing pretty good, can't he! He and Don Oscar were getting down! So Pru is actually thinking of throwing over Hum for this impulsive, irresponsible, dishonest scrub who hasn't managed to launch himself off his parent's couch? Go for it, girl, and all the shame and ridicule it'll bring on your head. But you deserve much worse!

Go Padre! Go Padre! YES! I understand Adelina's fears but PJ made some good points about the anguish poor E-man is going through. PJ should NOT let this go!

I don't even know what to say about Cande. Comparing HER plight to the Lagos and having the nerve to angrily barge into their home and confront Irma was just beyond the pale! She may not be as vile and vicious as Val, but what do you call that kind of malignant effrontery? GOOD LORD!

The actor playing Sev has the intimidation/humiliation thing down pat with the visual rape technique. Damn! I could gouge that bastard's eyes out every time he does that! It is especially odious knowing he DID and WOULD act on this lust again!
UUuuuf!

And S/V. I know predictions feel spoilery but this is only from between Lila's ears: S/V may die protecting Lola from Sev or in an attempt to bring him down somehow. I don't see the poor thing surviving. Her story is all too plausible: Lusty, nubile, frontal lobe-impaired teenager dtiching the baby and man to be "free" again. Yeah, and I feel Lola, too about it taking 20 years to recognize her mistake. That WAS a powerful scene between Lola and S/V but the bottom line is I fear when S/V stands up to Sev, she's going to pay with her life.

Thank you, Diva! Saving comments for a treat: off today with mucho chores and errands to do!

Lila-"visual rape" is the perfect term for Sev's slimy looks.

I don't see Candela being redeemed anytime soon!

To all newcomers: Thanks for joining us here on the Sombra patio! We have a few rules here: no spoilers (do not discuss anything past the episode covered in the recap); no gossip about the stars' private lives; no criticizing the recap or the recapper. Please remember to thank the recappers. The "Care and Feeding of Recappers" link on the left sidebar near the top of the page covers this in more detail, as does this classic post from Blogmom herself.

Oh, hey, that's Steve! Thought you were a newbie since it seems like you've failed to comprehend that you're commenting on a blog post. Is there a formatting problem, perhaps, that renders them invisible? I'd hate to think that after all these...what is it, months? years?...of hanging out on Caray that the reason you rarely even acknowledge that there's a post up there above the comments is because you can't see it. That would really suck. All that work put in by so many people, day after day, and you've never actually had the opportunity to read a recap. Gotta say, you don't know what you're missing! We really need to figure out what's going on so we can fix it!

I mean, this must be the reason, right? Because if you could see the recap, you'd at least say "Thanks" to the person who wrote it. If for no other reason than it gives you a space to air your thoughts about the show. To do otherwise would be rude.

No redemption for Candela, especially if her reaction to the revelation about the rape is anything less than outrage.

My guess is that she will be indifferent unless either Sev gets violent with her or she witnesses him in a truly egregious act of violence.

As to her "ignorance" about guns from the police "investigation" I call shenanigans. She may not be a fan of firearms, but if she grew up on Las Animas (which I think she did) she can't be unfamiliar with them.

You know what guys, I have not had to adjust my beanie for the ineptitude of the SL and DF police. You know why? Every morning this week I have woken up to a special investigation report by my local NPR (WAMU) about the continuing injustice carried out for YEARS by the DC police, using trumped up assault on a police officer laws to charge and jail hundreds of innocent people. People jailed for just asking the question why a police officer is stopping them. So yeah, nothing the SL police have done so far has surpassed the injustices DCPD has been doling out just with this one law each day. For anyone interested, you can check out the story here: http://wamu.org/projects/assault-on-justice/

What a fantastic and detailed recap! I don;t know how you guys post these so quickly and yet so well written.

5ft Latina - Are we allowed to comment on the previews shown after the episode airs or is that considered spoilers? Based on your rules posted it seems like that would be spoilers but people used to comment on the next episode previews shown in the HEFDM recaps all the time so I'm not sure since I am fairly new and don't have much experience here outside that show & a couple others' posts so I thought I'd ask. Better safe than sorry.

Linda- The avances in this show really give too much away, so 5ft has probably asked us not to discuss them because it can start feeling spoilery. Normally discussing avances isn't a big deal on the Univsion TNs.

Linda, previews do occasionally contain spoilers, so when I recap I generally don't reference them. Also, some of us view in advance and the previews can be different in other countries.

Kat, thank you.

Sara, thank you for yesterday's recap.

I loved Tomas, yes, he is going towards the light.

Cande - doesn't that woman have any self respect. If she did she would have left Sev's sorry a$$ long ago instead of becoming a mirror image of his evilness.

I'm directing a show and we had our first read-thru last night. We've got a great script and an amazing cast. It opens on June 9, so we have our work cut out for us. http://www.herbergertheater.org/calendar/mallecho-15/ if you're curious.

So anyway, I got home last night after the read-thru full of ideas and spent maybe an hour sending emails and making notes before it all leaked out of my ears. And then I got to the recap, which I would have gotten done faster, but I was clearly distracted...and some of those scenes had bad sound balance! Tomas in the bar? I thought the other two guys were saying something sinister until I turned it up louder! That took a ridiculous number of rewinds, since I can't press the correct combination of buttons to make closed captions appear ever since we got a new cable box (at least the box works, unlike the previous 2, so I'll settle for no cc's).

All of which is to say, after staying up later than I should have to get it done, when I wake up in the morning to so many comments expressing appreciation it's all worth it. Thank you!

I will be back later to converse some more, though I suspect you've all got it covered :D

No, the ignoring spoilers thing isn't a rule, I'm just asking if we can leave this one alone because that was way too much info for them to give us in a preview and it's probably going to be a big part of tonight (or be a total mis-lead) so I don't want to steal Sara's thunder!

Just saw your comment, Vivi. That is terrible.

Hell, Kat. No pressure. I'm already anxious about the episode. :D

Wow. You sound like you've got a full plate. And it's even harder when you are recapping in "real time" the day the episode airs. Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to recap for us.

Mallecho looks really interesting!!

Stellar recapitulation Diva, lots of love and work into it.

"[head explodes, beanie pops off, recapper wishes for alcohol, but it's FAR too late]"

Thanks Vivi, I see it all too often in third world countries and a friggin travesty it happens in ours. Petty tyrants, power trippin.

Wow, I really am liking Yolanda Ventura's work as Irma

I've bout lost my patience with Adelina

While I know it is comedic, Pru disgusts me

"...I'm just asking if we can leave this one alone because that was way too much info for them to give us in a preview..."

Yes. They did give WAAAAY too much away in that preview. The sad thing is is that will probably be the biggest action tonight.

Now about Cande. I find her to be just as confusing a character. Maybe it's because Sev is so, so, very vile that I can't lump Cande with him. I guess she's complicit. She knows he's done things to get Roberta and Aldonza out of town, but I honestly don't think she realizes he raped Aldonza. She knows they lied to Roberta about the baby, but in Cande's head she probably rationalizes that the baby is still alive.

Again, I am stirred by the few scenes we've seen with her and Dominga where she looked so vulnerable.

I think she's redeemable. By that I mean that she should end up in a convent somewhere feeling guilty, but still able to at least get visits from Dominga. I doubt Cris would want to see her after he finds out she was the one that ordered Sev to "do something".

I'm not sure why Uni has decided that the advances for this tn needs to include all the major plot developments. It's not like them. Usually they are vague, or just make stuff up. But with this tn, they just show us the goods up front. Stop it, Uni! Instead of using your censors to cut much anticipated love scenes, use them on your advances.

Perhaps Cande ends up in a purgatory. A convent attached to the parish PJ presides over. So close yet so far for the rest of her life.

Good morning peeps. Thank you Diva for yet another fun and informative recap. I can usually follow along with what is being said, but thanks to all the recappers for filling in the fine print.

I am LOVING La Sombra. Can't wait for the Tomas and Pru hookup. Still two of my favorites and can always look forward to some thing outrageous from them.

It is a beautiful day here and can't wait to get out and enjoy it. See you all at the Naughty Melon later.

That's a great idea for Cande, tofie!

I didn't like the look on Sev's face as he threw Simonetta down to the floor.

And your description is perfect on the "visual rape". That was so obvious last night in the Kops station I was surprised one of the Bod Squad didn't deck him.

I see how they keep building up E-Man's distain of Sev. Last night he was repeatedly in Sev's face and almost daring him. It just makes it all the more disheartening to know what he will go through when he learns this jackass is his sperm donor and what he deprived him of. I keep walking the fence to have him know and cheer the Padre on because it will be a hit to Cande and Sev who kept the secret, but it may destroy a young man who can't handle the aftermath and could do something stupid.

Mati being mis-cast makes it hard, even if she changes, to cheer her on with anyone. She just comes off odd. Comforting Irma last night, she looked like her sister, not the daughter.

Daisynjay

Our comments crossed, emeraldrose. Tomas and Pru are funny...and sort of gross at the same time.

Diego de Erice is the actor playing Tomas and I really like him. I hope he gets a lot more roles in the future!

You may be right, Daisnynjay. I am so annoyed by the casting of Mari, that it spills over to her character. At least for me it does.

I am thinking that Emmanuel needs to get this horrible news jointly from Hum and the padre. Both of them will need to make him understand the consequences of earlier disclosure. Even then there will be a domino effect on many other people.

If Hum and Pru aren't in divorce court yet this will put them there.

Valeria will really be peeved, as she usually is.

Sev will get violent.

Candela will get huffy and cold.

Aldonza and Cristobal will try to protect Emmanuel.

Dominga and Melesio will be angry at Sev and Candela and protective of Emmanuel.

Renato will offer to file papers to have Emmanuel's name legally changed so he will inherit half of Sev's assets.

All of SL will look at Sev and Candela with new eyes.

Correction; I should have said "colder."

Man, I wanted to smack Sever during that entire scene when he both raped Al with his eyes, and when he dismissively shushed Eman (putting his finger to his lips even), while admiring that he's spirited like his...

Sev does that dismissive shushing thing A LOT. It annoys the stew out of me. It's getting a little old. It's going to end up looking more comedic if he doesn't watch it.

Given how violent Sev is towards women, I find it interesting that so far, he hasn't dared to lay a finger on Candela. That scene where she's obnoxiously gloating in his face about his mistress's true identity and Sev is outraged and fuming, I kept waiting for him to possibly raise his hand to her even as a threat and nothing. I find their dynamic quite interesting. She seems to be the only woman in his life that can go toe to toe with him and walk away unscathed..for now.

Daisynjay - The mis-casting of Mari drives me nuts as well. All the younger crowd is being played by actors various degrees older than their on screen characters but the only 2 that really annoy me are the ones playing Lola and Mari. The actress playing Lola is 35 and to me, looks at least 30 (not the around 22 she's supposed to be) which makes the incessant baby voice she always uses like nails on a chalkboard. That's got to stop.
The actress playing Mari may be 33 but she looks like she's pushing 40. She can not pass for a young 20 something at all and she looks ridiculous in her high pony and teeny bopper clothes. Put her hair down and put her in more mature clothing and she could easily pass for a peer or sister of Irma. The actress looks very old, older than she actually is which makes the casting choice even more baffling.

Sara, I actually think that shushing motion that Sev does is a brilliant touch brought to the character and Alexei just works it. It's like his little sign to people, hey hey...I'm in control, don't shout, won't get you anywhere. And dang if it doesn't always work. yep, annoying as all get out since he does it just as people are going to let him have it, but perfect for the character's as a trademark move.

Linda I think Sev threads that fine line with Cande for two reasons: grudging admiration for a woman in he probably never thought he could catch and who can be just as ruthless as he is and the fact she may be still his meal ticket. We don't know for sure how much of the business is tied up with her. She brought the money to the marriage, and my guess is she has her name on a lot of it, especially the manse.

Daisynjay

Cripes, I have a lousy little salad at work today to snarf and my Captcha has to be pictures of pizza and ice cream. Really?? The gods are cruel today.

Daisynjay

That was an awesome recap, Diva! Love "The bartender: YOLO." and I am with you on Don Oscar - what a set of pipes! Glad that he's gotten recognition for them and isn't languishing as a TN extra. And thank you for your take on Cande's whining to Dom. Ugh! She totally needed the reality check Irma gave her (though I SO wanted to see Irma say "Oh, your son's in jail? That's so hard. Let me show compassion for you because all I did today is BURY MY SON." Jesus, Cande, QTF is wrong with you?!)

Kudos to Don Mele for highlighting Lola's perspective. I've been mentally telling her to suck it up and stop pouting, but he's right it's only been a day and it was a HUGE lie.

I guess I spoke too soon yesterday about the show being on the pulse of the audience with beanie tightening moments. WHY is the police guy telling Sev exactly what they're going to do with the evidence? And it occurred to me while watching Sev that he could've gotten Cris out by saying Lardo asked for the gun for protection because the guys to whom he owed money had threatened him. Sev took it from him before going to DF, but didn't have time to lock it away in his gun chest or whatever before leaving and Lardo saw him lock it in the drawer. Oh well.

Yeah, Adelina, where's the cousin over your potential nephew that's suffered emotional and verbal abuse all his life?

Is it just me or is Sev way more upset that I thought he would be about SV lying to him. Is it just because he looked like an idiot when Cande brought it up?

Also que ironia! He lied to Rob about their "daughter" being dead and now he's pissed about Sim lying to him about her daughter being dead.

Wonder what Cande will do when the truth finally comes out and PJ confronts her about her role in the baby scheme...

concern*, not cousin. Don't know where that came from.

Thank you Diva for todays recap amongst your heavy workload. The recappers are so much appreciated

Don't know what problem Steve may be having but I almost quit commenting because almost every time I posted, my post would soon vanish. I didn't do anything but my posts have now been sticking.
Who knows what goes on in the computer world?

WOW! Some nerve. Cande goes to see Irma screeching and yelling at her to drop the charges against Cris? Irma just buried her son. PLEASE!!!

I guess that the lesson of this sad experience is not to gamble with more than you have to loose.

Diva---the previews sure said a lot last night. There could be 15/20 comments on those alone. I don't want to get into trouble so mum's the world but I would guess that the comments will be
sizzling manana.

With all of the people standing around and coming and going at the police station, I'm surprised that no one has noticed that Aldonza is wearing a wedding ring. I guess that Cris still isn't wearing his but Donnie is and they are together as much as possible at this point. No one noticed the ring? QUE?

SO RIGHT ON Vivi as to the SL, DF,
and the US police. this police injustice can be seen right here each and every day. You hit a home
run Vivi. Most Americans have their eyes closed.

What will happen to S/V? I'm staying tuned.
the gringo

Gringo- I think people notice rings on a woman's fingers less, especially if the ring is not a huge engagement ring. If Cande and Sever would stop their rants and threats towards her long enough, they might take a second glance and notice that ring on her left hand. Sever missed the rings on BOTH Al and Cris when he confronted them in DF, and Cande missed it on Cris when he returned home and she slapped him silly. He then took it off when she invaded his room later and has had it off since. Good move if he wants to keep it a secret until he tells his demon parents.

"Also que ironia! He lied to Rob about their "daughter" being dead and now he's pissed about Sim lying to him about her daughter being dead."

Word. Surely that was on purpose...

Since we're on the topic-

1) I've been wondering if that's why the costuming department had her wearing a bunch of rings beforehand, so that it would be less noticeable to ppl afterwards? I'm surprised we didn't get a scene where they took them off and put them on the scapular necklaces or something of the kind.

2) I thought Val would've noticed immediately when she saw her in the square.

3) Does Lola know Cris and Al are married? I know Al told her that Cris proposed, but does she know they already tied the knot?

I don't think so. We would have been shown that scene.

Padre J told Lola that he was sure Aldonza "had a lot to tell" Lola. But it was the same day Lola found out about her mom and in the the next scene Lola was telling Aldonza about that. I don't remember Al telling Lola she was actually married to Cris.

From my recap last Thursday:

"Aldonza and Lola share notes about Sim/Viv. Lola tells her about seeing Sim and Sev kissing and that's why she stopped seeing Sim. Aldonza tells Lola that she and Cris saw Sim with Sev in the DF. Lola marvels that her mother has turned out to be Sev's lover."

I was incredibly brief about it, but I like to think I would have noted if Aldonza spilled those frijoles...but I was beat last Thursday so who knows.

Vivi???? Wanna help? :-)

"Being treated like a normal person and not allowed to use her position and money to cheat the system…how awful that must feel! Oh, how I weep for you! [Insert solo played on world's tiniest violin here." So funny Diva.... Thanks for your limitless energy and sense of fun while recapping our dear little "La Sombra." Also, loved this..."Padre J's an awfully good liar for somebody who's so upset about all the lying going on…just saying."

I think what is helping Cande is that her resentment of Roberta as her husband's amante and her dislike of her due to her ramera personality is justified. Most women wouldn't want their son to date the daughter of the person who had an affair with their husband and was the fastest woman in town. While she is sooo unreasonable in her actions, her reactions are understandable, at least to me. (Of course, Cande's love of a padre is a road less traveled to say the least!) I see her as being a person who can change, she loves her son enough not to lose him entirely.

Hmmm, not sure Aldonza got far enough that she told Lola of the marriage. I recall she told her Cris found her at Renato's, he was screaming to come in and Cris crashed the car. Lola also inquired how Renato took this and Aldonza saying to Lola she got the man of her dreams and got to keep her bestie. Still cannot remember her saying right out they married. Help

Candela is incapable of separating Aldonza from Roberta, which also means she is incapable of separating from her own son.

I don't remember posting this before, but what is Sev's history of adultery before the curtain went up on this story? Did he cheat on Candela before taking up with Roberta? How long was he involved with Roberta (If anyone ever said anything about that I missed it)? Is it possible that he went after her to stick it to Raymundo, maybe by knocking her up so that no matter what happens he somehow gets some of El Santuario back?

We are not privy to any of that UA. All we know is the affair was in full swing prior to Aldonza and Cris's baptism but the children mighty little so perhaps it had just started.

Severiano does know Cande loved another man when they married but I don't think he cared.

No. Aldonza did not tell Lola about the marriage. First, because Lola was so upset about her mama news, and second, likely because Lola can't keep a secret. Right now Renato (and his dad), Padre, and Adelina know. Can't remember if Renato told Silvia that Al and Cris got married, or just that they got back together.

Ok, good, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. The scene in which Lola and Al were talking after Al and Cris got back from DF was surprising because Al was wearing her ring at the time and Lola was actually holding her hands when she told her that Cris proposed, that's why I thought I had missed Lola getting the big news.

Sandy in TN-good point. They should have her say "anyone but Aldonza" rather than "Val is the only woman that can make you happy" because seriously? Why? Based on what?

If Sev doesn't want Emmanuel to inherit, all he has to do is right him out of his will. The land is Cande's and whatever earnings Sev has made go to whoever he wants. Even Cris could be cut out if Sev felt like it.

write*

I remember. Renato did tell Silvia about the wedding, when he was in his drunk funk. He likely told Pato too, which makes him more loose lipped than Lola!

I'm not so sure about that. Different countries -- and different states within each country that has them -- have different laws about whether one can disinherit an adult child.

The crazy thing about Candela's preference for Valeria is that she thinks that Valeria is just like herself. If that were truly the case, there would be a constant battle between the two of them over who would actually control Cristobal and they would hate each other within a month.

Kat – thank you for the recap!!!

Poor Irma. She buried her son hours ago and she can’t get a break; no peace from Cande or Aldonza. The actress is doing a great job with her demeanor.

Much as I dislike Pru, her scenes were funny. Heimlich maneuver....bwahahahahaaa!

Diasynjay – ITA! While I was watching and looong before I read your comment, I thought Mari and Irma look more like sisters. Silly casting dept at Telerisa!

”Is it just me or is Sev way more upset that I thought he would be about SV lying to him. Is it just because he looked like an idiot when Cande brought it up?”
Right on both counts. Sev believes his megalomaniac self is smarter than anyone else and in control of e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.
I could hear Sheldon Cooper yelling "Bazinga!" when she dropped that little bomb on Sev. It was the one rare time I actually enjoyed Cande.

I already hear the anvil clanging over Sim/Viv's head. Don't y'all? She's been roughed up often enough by Sev that I think he will go a bit too far, next time.

Oh, and that little scene with Pato comforting Mari.....I definitely think those two will be together by the end of this telenovela.

Vivi is right about the wedding. Only Pad Jer, Renato, and Adelina know, right now.

Doris - I know! I don't want to believe it, but the Pato/Mari end game looks real! Ugh!

Sigh. I'll schlump over to that table eventually, I'm sure, if only for Pato's happiness.

Mari and Irma are only 13 years apart in real life. They're closer in age than myself and my sibling. But then, Estelle Getty was a year younger than Bea Arthur and she played her mother on The Golden Girls. And Tanya Boyd and Renee Jones are only 9 years apart and played mother and daughter on Days of Our Lives.

hellashelle - I have made peace with the possibility of a Pato/Mari combo. I think Lardo's death will change her....for the good.

13 years actually sounds just about right for how much older female actors usually are than the folks who play their kids.

The actress playing Lola is in her 30s too. But I don't perceive her as way too old for her role like I do Mari.

Sara.....Glad you find Pru and Tomas "interesting" as well. I loved Diego de Erice in Que Pobre Tan Rico. Great comedian. Also love Jaime Camil also from Que Pobre. He is absolutely a hoot in Jane the Virgin. Love truly funny men.

Can"t wait for tonight, so we can discuss it.

Diego de Erice has been cast in Rosy Ocampo's new comedy. I can't wait to see it.

Sara.....what is the name of Rosy Ocampo's new TN? If Diego is in it, I'm in.

Antes Muerta que Lichita. I think it's gonna be a while before it premieres in Mexico and as of now Univision does plan to air it here. That could always change though.

I'm really not sure I'll ever be at the Pato/Mari table. I'll probably set up a pouty and bitter about it table.

Sara - he is also listed as having been in Amores Verdaderos, but I can not recall his "Vladimir" character. And I wish I could!

I saw that today too, doris! I can't remember him either!

There's some actress listed as Livia Brito's friend in TdA and I can't remember her either. Or her name.

They were probably on one episode in one or two scenes. Drives me crazy when I can't place it.

Diva Kat, thanks for an excellent, entertaining recap. Especially with everything else going on.

I've been watching Sombra in patches and skimming the recaps. Thanks to all the recappers for providing our daily TN manna.

Loved the serenade and our two super singers. Cande and Pru are a couple of delusional small-town...I was going to say divas, but that would be an insult to our lovely Kat. One day they'll be stripped of all their pretentions and get the scorn and ridicule they deserve.

La Divi great recap perfect detail. As always you brought it girl.

Now, mrs. High&mighty cande, I think she was disapointed when they didn't think she was as important as she thought she was. They disobeyed her command, to release her son. Maybe on "game of thrones" it would have worked, or not.

Sev, you'd think he'd show more concern for his son, instead he blames aldonza while he's undressing her. Never mind shes his daughter-in-law, I know he doesn't know that yet, but show some freaken restaint. Stop thinking with your"little sev". Right, look who I'm talkin about.

Simoneta/Viviona, I think I spelled that right. SHE is a sad woman. I'm sorry for her. I hope things get better for her, when she desides she wont be a doormat for sev anymore.

Cris, poor cris. Ok thats my comments so far. There is so much to comment on and not a lot of time. I'll be back.

Again great recap. You guys and girls ROCK!!!

NINA

Well, darn! Thought I'd have a chance to come back and sit a spell, but instead I've had to settle for skimming comments and giggling throughout the day. (((((patio))))) See you on tomorrow's recap!

Diva thank you for the nice recap you prepared for us. I consider it a gift from you and other recappers, and even the daily comments. As your compensation you receive our appreciation and thanks, rightfully so. With all due respect, I am joyfully reading along, until I read scathing reproaches to a recapper who hasn't thanked you or the other recappers. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else, but it bothers me to see someone treated like social outcast because they didn't thank you. You and recappers receive tons of praise, if one or two fail to do so, try to overlook and focus on the rest of your adoring fanbase.Kindly let it go. I just had to say something, and I will no longer post or read recaps if my saying so makes me an undesirable. I started reading blog right before Madeline's got ill, and I became hooked in her wonderful recaps and gracious and respectful treatment of all.

I'm going to speak for Kat.

We deserve the thanks. Some of the recappers on this team pre-date Madelaine by two or more years and have written hundreds of recaps.

Kat in particular has kept two shows afloat without a full team...just like Madelaine.

Some of us have dealt with spammers, flamers and even been asked to stop recapping.

It is only recently that Kat has decided that she would harp on the thanks because the comments that don't include a thanks sound like the person hasn't even read or even WATCHED the show. In fact, there was even a spoiler in one.

We can't all have the personality you would like. If it bothers you so much, don't read the comments. Or, better yet..ignore the two comments that bother you.

I should say, I am speaking for her, but she doesn't know it.

1. Sara has captured my attitude correctly.

2. Madeline was a very kind and thoughtful person, but I'm not her.

3. I don't have a problem with you saying what you said, but I can't promise you that I'm not going to have the self-respect to stand up for myself, either--even if that means that I come off as being rude. Some days I have infinite patience and some days I don't. You know the saying "You teach people how to treat you"? I feel like I've been teaching people that it doesn't matter how they treat me. That what I've done is insignificant and I don't deserve even the "thanks" someone might get for passing the salt or holding a door open. By extension, I was making it acceptable to treat my team members that way. That's not right. They deserve better.

This didn't come from nowhere. It's a response to something that has been going on and getting steadily worse for a long time. There's been an overall increase in trolling and spam and rudeness...I think trying to "vote out" a recapper was the low point... and if we're going to stay an actual community and not get into the typical nastiness that shows up in the comment sections of a lot of other sites on the Internet, that's not going to happen by ignoring it when it starts to creep in. I know that's the conventional wisdom--"Ignore it and it will go away"--but for whatever reason, that hasn't worked. We been trying (and I don't think this is an exaggeration) for years. We ignored, we deleted...it just keeps getting worse. That's what prompted the change in tactics.

I don't think this is something we can really resolve in one day or one conversation. We're just going to have to see how this continues to evolve.

Well, I didn't realize all the negative things that had been occurring. Diva, and since you call out on people for their lack of manners, you certainly can and fi. I apologize I didn't mean to ruffle you or Sara's feather, though I am not surprized. I will gracefully bow out, because the last thing I want to do is make the other readers uncomfortable with going back and forth. You can have the last word, I am comfortable with what I said, so be it.
