Pasión y Poder #1 Martes 11/3/15 Debut

Dear Readers,

The Upper East Side, the North Shore, and Newport have become rather tedious in recent times. The death of Ann Grenville and the closing of the ranks on all that concerned her and her family moved me to finally tell the truth in print.

For which reason I am no longer welcome in their circles.

I was due for a change anyway. Having spent more than one season in Purgatory among people with too much money has made me eager for new territory. Even Europe fails to satisfy. Therefore I have set my sights to the south where – with the help of a friend who provided a new identity – I will continue my study of the self-proclaimed upper crust. I will write for Vanidades while gathering all the dirty linen needed for my next novel.

You are the privileged set who will receive the previews. All I ask in return is if you see me at a charity ball or in one of the fashionable restaurants that you keep my identity – and these words – to yourselves.

                                                                                                      – D.D.

Chapter 1: Mixed Doubles

It has often been said that no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. That is true with the exception of a few people with the dubious privilege of serving those who live behind those doors. They are well-paid for their silence and they play their roles in circling the wagons around their employers to prevent any injury to the public image of the household or its masters. Information can leak, however, and sometimes it falls into hands such as mine. These people worry about such things.

Eladio Gómez Luna was handsome enough to be an actor in one of those novelas that get big television ratings. He was tall, fair-complexioned, with impeccably cut dark hair. His smile showed teeth of such perfection he might have starred in a toothpaste commercial. Those who saw him by a hotel pool or a on a beach said his physique was without flaw. He carried himself in public with such an air of confidence that only a select few ever saw the chinks in his armor.
One of those was his beautiful – and abused – wife, Julia.

It was a pleasant evening outside the mansion. However, their argument could be heard from the foot of the stairs.
Why aren't you ready? We have to be at dinner with the Santoses.”
I don't want to go. I don't like going to your business dinners.”
You are my wife and you have to go.”
I said No. I don't want to go. Let go of me. If you insist you will have to kill me.”
If necessary I will.”
One had to wonder who purchased the painting of the crying woman on the couch that hung on the wall facing the top of the stairs. It symbolized the entire dynamic of their relationship.
I'm not pretending anymore. I'm your wife, but I'm not going through with this.”
You are my wife and you will do as I say. I hate you. I hate you!”
I won't do what you demand. I am not your slave.”
Shut up! We're going out. Now hurry up!”
A mirror got smashed in the progress of this fight. The break pattern looked like the beginnings of a spider's web. Julia saw her reflection in it and gasped.

An hour later Eladio and Julia were dining in an exclusive restaurant with the Santoses. They talked about inconsequentials. Eladio checked the time. His gesture was perfectly staged.
How beautiful that watch looks on you,” Julia commented with a smile.
I saw this in the catalog and fell in love with it. It didn't matter what I had to pay at the auction.”
That's from the auction you attended during your week in New York?” said Mariano Santos.
You must come with us next time,” Julia said.
Of course,” Eladio said. “And you must come with us to The Dreams. At the moment it is written up as the best restaurant in all the United States. It takes a while to get a table.”
But don't you need to wait at least a year for a reservation?” asked Sra Santos.
Eladio kissed his wife and smiled.
Julia is dying to know it and she knows I like to please her. Will you be our guests?”
Thank you very much. Of course we will. It will be a pleasure,” said Mariano.
Very good. Now let's enjoy our dinner and not distract ourselves with things like the sale in Acapulco. I know you really don't want to sell it.”
Mariano Santos looked very briefly as though he had been caught off guard.
I have been considering it. It's an excellent piece and very memorable. It's true.”
Would you like to see it?” Eladio asked Julia.
Of course. Whenever you say.”
Well then, let's enjoy the champagne. They say it's the best, but one never knows.”
Salud.”
They clinked glasses and drank. Nothing in Julia's manner or the off-the-shoulder navy dress she wore betrayed her bruises.

Arturo Montenegro and his wife Nina returned home from a party and went up to the master bedroom.
My love,” she said, almost pouting like a child. “You know we left when the party was getting better.”
That's because I have to get up early tomorrow morning.”
But don't you own the company?” she said.
Nina,” he said with a smile. He wondered why she was asking this.
Arturo, did you notice Daniel's new car?”
Of course. It was a birthday present for his wife.”
Well, I want one just like it.” She kissed him. “I just want a different color.”
Your car is new.” He laughed faintly. “I only bought it three months ago.”
Ay, my love, what's wrong with me wanting a new car?”
Simply when you need something I'll buy it. This looks like excess.”
You talk like you don't have money. Or like you're far away from me. I'm afraid.”
I'm sorry, Nina, but don't insist. You won't convince me.” He took off his jacket.
Of course. You say you can't handle other people's humiliations but when someone wants the best...” She looked at him. “Take off your tie. Arturo, I need this car.”
You need this car? I need to put food in our mouths.”
Seriously. I need it.”
Arturo ignored this and went into the shower.

Julia invited the Santoses to their next party. Sra Santos offered to text her the next day. Julia embarassedly admitted she knew nothing about technology.
You don't know how many times I've told her she should have a cell phone,” Eladio said. “But she says “The chauffeur has one. She doesn't want to get calls she'd rather not answer.” He laughed. Julia momentarily looked a little ill at ease.
But I'll give you the phone number at the house. You can contact me there.” She turned to Eladio. “If you will permit me?” she asked as she reached for his solid gold pen.
Of course.”

Nina sprayed on her favorite scent and waited for Arturo. He never took long in the shower.
He was a highly successful businessman, but had not managed his personal life to perfect satisfaction. A mistake he had made many years earlier cost him the woman he had truly loved. He had been forced to marry another. His first wife had been pregnant at the altar, although this fact had been hushed until the birth of their son, Miguel. She had died not long thereafter, leaving Arturo a much sought-after widower. Tall, dark-haired, and handsome with the alpha-male facial features of a film star, he had a very noble and romantic nature.
He therefore was ripe for the picking by Nina Pérez.
Nina was a beautiful woman with dark hair to her waist and a figure out of the latest fashion magazine. She had a brief but disastrous career as an actress. It would have been her golden parachute out of poverty, as it was for many women like her. Beauty, however, only buys so much before talent becomes a necessity so she needed to change her plans. She had decided that she would use her beauty to buy her way up the social ladder to a life of luxury and glamour. Thus far she had been successful, but was always alert to the danger of slipping back down.
So Nina had other ideas about the rest of the evening. She sat on the edge of the huge bed, her crossed legs visible through the slit in the skirt of the dress as she watched the bathroom door. The papaya-colored dress suit her coloring perfectly. The chiffon fabric was draped in a classical style, clinging to her figure as it might to a goddess's. She wore silver chains in her dark hair, as though she were a medieval princess out of a child's fairy tale. This was exactly the dichotomy of image she wanted. When Arturo came out of the bathroom in his blue pyjamas, hoping to get a good night's sleep this was a perfect device to make him change his mind. A few seconds later he found himself unzipping her dress and being seduced into the silk sheets that she had made sure were pressed to perfection that morning. She was determined to have her way with him that night and in more ways than one.

The Gómez Lunas returned home from the restaurant. He was pleased with her performance and wanted an encore in a different venue. She refused.
Don't you think I'm tired of pretending we're the perfect couple?” She said. At the sight of his facial expression she ran into her closet. He sprayed the alcohol odor from his mouth and stood still, thinking.

Arturo's cell phone was set to ring at 6AM and it obeyed. Nina tried to persuade him to stay home and in bed with her but he declined her offer, saying he had to be in the office. The cell signaled that he had messages and he began reading them. He had an important meeting that morning. Nina conceded defeat and kissed him several times. She watched him get up to dress.
My love. Thanks for buying me a new car.”
He paused for a second, unsure of what he had heard. “What?”
Thanks. You're buying me a new car.”
He laughed as though it were a joke coming from a child wanting a new toy. But she was deadly serious.

Simona, Eladio's long-suffering assistant, arrived at the house. She exchanged greetings with the security guard at the front door. Eladio finished a call in his home office. He reproached his personal assistant, the long-suffering Simona, for being late with the morning paper, complaining that he had been forced to read the news on the internet. He demanded to know whether his wife was in the dining room. She barely flinched because she was accustomed to his entitled manner. Making a show of his anger and impatience, he left the room.
Julia woke up and shivered slightly. Her ivory skin was set off beautifully by her black negligée and the dark grey silk sheets. Her brown hair cascaded in waves down her back. She put her diamond ring back on as she looked at the photo on her nightstand. Then she finally got up and opened the drapes over the terrace doors. She stepped outside and uncovered the cage that held three canaries that were already singing their morning song. She went back inside to get food for them and found Eladio.
Do you know what time it is? It's obvious. It's time you were up and tending to your husband.”
I had a headache. I was trying to get a little more sleep.”
You always have an excuse not to talk to me.”
I feel ill.”
You feel ill. How do you think I feel? How do you think I feel when you only have eyes for this?” He took the framed photo of their son David from her nightstand and smashed it on the floor. She looked at the photo and the shards of glass, then at his hostile expression. He had a zero-sum mentality about everything, including human feelings. He could not tolerate her love for David.

Nina was pleased that Arturo had put on the tie she had given him. It was a deep royal purple, one of his favorite colors. He remembered that Nina was going to accompany their daughter Regina to the bridal shop. “You must be very excited about that.”
Oh, yes. Daniela is coming along, too.”
Daniela? Why? It doesn't sound like something she would do.”
Well, it's a deal,” Nina said. “Besides, I want the wedding to be the best and with all the of everything.”
But why? The luggage...” He trailed off, not sure what to say next.
Nina grinned at him, ignoring his slightly pained expression.

Why do you only think of him, Julia?” asked Eladio. “Why don't you realize I just want to make you happy?”
Eladio, please,” she said. “We've talked about this many times – “
I am speaking!” he shouted. Then he lowered his voice. “Don't put that photo back on your nightstand. Because that would make me break every one that's in this house.” He watched her start to cry. “Don't behave like that. Your son is in Monterrey having a good life.”
Our son! He's finishing his master's degree He's working very hard.”
David needs to join my company to help me against that wretch Arturo Montenegro.”
Two great entrepreneurs and you're such enemies. Why?”
You know perfectly well that the war between him and me is to the death!” He grabbed her arm and turned her to face him. He grabbed her throat and turned her face toward his murderous gaze. “And you know how it began, right? Maybe you'd like to talk about the past?”
She looked at him out of the corners of her eyes. This subject was too dangerous to be talked about.

Joshua, Regina's fiancé visited to bring her roses. Deep red ones, the color of velvet. She loved them. He was hoping she was free that afternoon because he had a surprise for her.

Simona was talking to David on the phone. She headed for the stairs to bring the phone to Julia. Eladio was halfway up the stairs. He heard his son's name and took the phone from her as she said the boy was calling to talk to his mother. He talked to David, telling him that his mother felt ill. He ended the call abruptly and handed the phone back to Simona. He yelled at her to put it back and say nothing of this. He pointed to the door out of the living room as he sat down and played with the letter opener he was holding.

Nina came down the stairs in her robe, yelling repeatedly for the maid. She was just as entitled as Eladio, to the point of changing the maid's name because the original was “inappropriate.” “You should be grateful,” she told her. “The new one has more class.” Apparently nobody ever taught her that displaying such obsession with class was clear proof of its lack.
Miguel, Arturo's first-born, was already in the dining room. He was a bookish young man with reading glasses.
Good morning, Nina,” he said. He smiled in spite of what he knew would be her reaction.
You do not exist for me. You're just from the wrong side of the blanket,” she said.
Mother, don't talk to Miguel that way. Respect my brother,” said Regina as she entered with the roses.
Half-brother. He's no son of mine.”
What beautiful flowers. Would you like me to put them in water for you?”
Yes, thanks, Petra,” said Regina. The housekeeper left with the roses. Regina kissed Miguel and sat on his left at the table. Consuelo came down to join them.
Good morning,” she said.
The only thing missing is my other two,” said Nina.
Aren't you staying for breakfast?” asked Consuelo.
Of course not,” Nina said. She paused on her way out to address Regina. “Remember we're going shopping for your bridal gown today.” She left the dining room.
Consuelo offered to accompany Regina but she discouraged her. Daniela was also going to be there. Miguel made an sardonic remark that she would have a very good day in such company. Regina said that she hoped that the wedding preparations would make things better.
Not if Daniela's attire that morning was a valid example of her wardrobe. She came downstairs in what some have called a romper. Except for her auburn hair she looked like Madonna on her Like a Prayer tour.
So why is everyone up so early if Mother isn't here?”
Good morning,” Regina said. “We didn't wake you up and Mother is on her way to the club.”
Alright. In that case I will go back and get a little more sleep.”
She left the dining room. On her way upstairs she passed her older brother, Erick.
Erick! My favorite brother,” she said as she hugged him. She warned him that he might not like the company before going back to her room. He looked back at her briefly before continuing down.

Julia fed her canaries. She smiled at them and complimented their singing. She was just as much a prisoner as they. Although her cage was bigger and unlike them she felt she had nothing to enjoy in her life. David came home from university, looking forward to seeing his mother. He was very excited and told her he was worried about her. “Father said you weren't well,” he said. She realized that Eladio had intercepted his call. But she was by then a prisoner of her own fear because she said nothing. She merely smiled and told David how happy she was he was home.

Erick Montenegro, Arturo and Nina's first-born, was dressed for the office. His close-cropped hair offered nothing much for a woman to run her fingers through. His attitude was a mirror-image of his own mother's. He was smug, too sure of himself, and guaranteed to be trouble. When Miguel said something about work he said “Don't interfere with that. Here you are merely a bastard.”
I am no bastard. I'm the son of our father's first wife.”
That exactly the same thing,” Erick said. “You are nothing here.” Regina, his younger sister, was indignant, as was Consuelo, Erick's attractive blonde wife. He left for work. Regina, Consuelo, and Miguel calmed down.
Erick enjoyed baiting them. It was difficult to believe he was the son of Arturo Montenegro.

Julia and David were trying to catch up. He was concerned at having been told she was ill. Before she could answer his question Eladio came in, deliberately slamming the door. He was offended that David had passed him over for Julia. “Of course. But remember that you are my son. Or not, Julia?” He slapped his hand on David's shoulder. “David is no son of mine.”
I will not permit you to insult my mother,” David said. He stared directly into his father's face without fear.
Please, David,” Julia said, pulling him back.
You are nobody to tell me what I can say or not say,” Eladio said.
You know how your father is,” Julia said.
Yeah, yeah, yeah; your role here is to beg for him. Start by respecting me.”
I do respect you,” said David. “I'm trying to communicate with you.”
Obviously, this doesn't work. Think about your ways and mine. Don't you realize you have to work with me to nurture the business – “
You know my plans perfectly well. I don't want to work for you. I want to be independent. Can't you respect that? You have Franco.”
He's my godson, not my son.”
You gave him that position above me. That wasn't fair. Since you mistreat my mother I will never work in your business or with you.”
He walked out. Julia tried to follow him, but Eladio grabbed her arm and held her back.
Leave him alone,” he said, calmly. “I don't need him to turn the tables on Arturo Montenegro.”
Eladio was forever demanding respect from his son, but refused to return the favor. Anything short of blind obedience was unacceptable to him. They argued over David's ambition to become an engineer rather than join his father's company where he would be under his thumb at all times. Like Julia was at home.

Augustin gave Arturo his opinion of the proposed car purchase. He thought it ridiculous. Arturo explained that he liked to please his wife. Augustin wasn't so sure. He told him “You work all these hours so you don't have to spend time with your family.”
No, that's not true.”
Of course it's true. Erick and Daniela worry me. They're dead like your wife. Don't spoil them. Take a stand and stick to it.”
Erick arrived, apologizing for being late. That wasn't enough for Arturo.
Erick, it's your responsibility to be here early as an example for our workers. Besides, remember that this is an important day. I'm about to close a deal with Santos.”
Don't worry, Dad. It's our deal.”
Yes. It's our coup.”

Regina went to the bridal shop with Nina and with younger sister Daniela. She tried on a simple strapless dress of chiffon with a wide flowing skirt and a fitted bodice. She twirled as she held out the skirt.
How do you like it?”
It's more for the country than your wedding,” said Daniela.
Are you crazy? No daughter of mine will get married in such a joke of a dress. Regina, you are a Montenegro, not some cheap slut from a tenement.”

David met with a friend. They talked about his problem with Eladio. All he would ever learn from him was how to mistreat women.

Nina did not approve. She considered this dress unworthy of her daughter's beauty and position in society. Not worthy of the society pages. Unworthy of a photo shoot for Vanidades. Daniela agreed with their mother although considering that she was dressed more like Madonna on her Who's That Girl tour she was in no position to discuss fashion taste. Regina was uninterested in their snobbery and defended her choice. They were persistent in their objections. Finally Regina had had enough and ran out of the shop in the dress only to collide with David in the street. She apologized and began to cry. He helped her up and realized he recognized her from somewhere. She recovered both her composure and her conviction. She then returned to the bridal shop and told her mother and her sister off. She would wear this dress whether they liked it or not.

Arturo told the receptionist at Mariano Santos' office that he had an appointment. Eladio appeared and said “You're mistaken, Arturo. He's in Acapulco. But you're wasting your time. The property is mine.”
I don't know what you're talking about,” Arturo said. “I have an appointment with Mariano.”
The deal isn't closed,” Eladio said. “That's why I'm here.”
The receptionist was getting nervous. “Excuse me. By error you both were booked for the same hour.”
An error? Don't worry, Miss,” said Eladio. “The solution is simple. Just send for Senor Santos and he will sell to me.”
Are you so sure?” Arturo asked. “Only if I let you.” Eladio laughed.
I'm not going to lose this deal,” he then said to Arturo. “It'll be very soon before I destroy you.”
For years you've tried and demonstrated you couldn't. And today is no exception.”
Eladio took off his sunglasses.
I've said I'll win this round and I will again. I have everything you want most. Julia is mine and she will be until death do us part.” He stared. “Hmm. It still hurts that you don't have Julia. I can see it.”
Think what you want. And the price of Antulco is negotiable.”
Nothing is signed.”
One's word counts for something. And – “
Mariano appeared behind Eladio. Arturo approached him.
We need to talk.”
I'm sorry, but – “
I insist on knowing which of us offered more.”
No. My secretary is mistaken. I'll take care of it.”
The point is that we've talked and I am prepared to pay,” said Eladio.
We were discussing a deal. You just didn't name a price.” Arturo said.
Say whatever you like, Arturo. My offer will always be better than yours. That's it, so let's forget this nonsense.”
Mariano looked like he was in the middle of a bullring with two bulls charging directly at him.

Nina was relentless in attempting to guilt-trip Regina about the wedding planning. She insisted it must be The Wedding of the Year. Although she didn't admit it this was the wedding she had wanted. She had married Arturo in the United States with no pomp but a lot of circumstance. She had missed out on being a queen on her wedding day. Daniela backed her up. She never liked that Regina – although a flawless beauty with long auburn hair and hazel eyes – had been bookish and studious rather than interested in fashion and gossip. Daniela even called her a scared little mouse. Regina knew her sister was all about the attention she provoked from others. She asked her mother “Would you want me to be like her? Doesn't go to school, always partying, studies nothing, knows nothing?”
They were saved by the sales clerk who arrived before Nina could answer. Regina told her she would take this dress. After the clerk left Regina and Nina stared at each other. They were always at odds over something.

Eladio took out his checkbook. Arturo reminded Santos about his company's reputation. Both men almost forgot the presence of their common acquaintance when the verbal knifing began. Eladio considered the highest bid to be the last word while Arturo was concerned about doing business honestly. They may as well have been performing a knife fight in a flamenco ballet. Santos sold the property to Eladio.

David was concerned about how his father treated his mother. He tried to get Simona to talk, but she was obviously afraid to. “It's better you talk with her,” she said as Julia came down the stairs. She left them alone. David was anxious. Julia would not admit David was right. “Your father was in a bad mood,” she said.
David was not fooled.
Mother, he's guilty. I know him. I know him perfectly.”
My love, why don't we talk about more pleasant things? Please.”
Very well,” he said after a moment's thought. “I have good news.”
He explained that he was entering a competition that would open doors for him to the right people. Julia was very proud of him. He was almost done with his master's thesis. David also had progress in the thesis he was working on and he honored Julia by telling her before anyone else. He would have called her but she didn't have a cell phone, nor did she know how to use one. David asked why Eladio always questioned that he was his father.
Julia admitted she could not leave the house without Eladio's permission. It was obvious to David that she was afraid to.
Mother, tell me the truth. Father doesn't want us to talk.”
Don't say that. Your father has a difficult personality. He's very jealous. It's not as bad as that.”
I'm outraged at the way he treats you. Why did he ask if I was his son?”
Julia stared. She didn't know how to answer him.

Miguel also had something to celebrate. He had received a commission from a man named Anselmo Campo. Regina was thrilled for him. This was going to change his life. He asked Regina if she could postpone the wedding. “Why don't you talk to Joshua?”
Consuelo came in to announce that Joshua had arrived. Regina told her about the bridal shop visit on the way out.

You know when your father is annoyed he says things without thinking.”
No, Mother. He says hurtful things. Why do you want to be here? Think about it. Get away for a while. It will do you good. Mother, listen to me, if you listen to this man – “
Listen to whom?” Eladio shouted. He had just entered on David's last sentence.
Why do you keep threatening my mother? Come, Mother, let's go.”
He tried to lead her out. Eladio stepped in their path. He grabbed Julia's wrist and pulled her aside before pushing David back.
You know Julia doesn't leave this house unless I want her to.”
Show her some respect! You have to respect her!”
You don't dare talk to me like this! I do what I have to do!”
Please,” Julia pleaded with him.
Mother, let's go. Let's go now. You must understand that – ”
Before she was your mother she's my wife. If you don't like that, get out.” He snapped his fingers as though issuing a military order. “But Julia stays with me.”
Mother, let's go. Let's go.” He held out his hand. She hesitated half a second before taking a step toward him. Eladio watched David's face with premature satisfaction.
My love,” she said as she took his hand. “No.” She released his hand. “I won't go. I will stay here with your father.”
Eladio had her in the crook of his arm. David's jaw dropped while Eladio's remained as smug as usual.
Believe me, your father adores me.” Eladio released her and kissed her. For show. “There's been a few bad moments but –”
I don't understand you, mother.”
Enough! She's your mother! Respect her! The only thing you need to get clear, little boy, is that your mother and I will always be together. Clear?” He snapped his fingers again. “If you want me to be your father you'll come to work in the company.”
The company, Father? I want to be independent. I won't let you manage me as you manage my mother and everyone else. Understand that.” He left the room. Eladio looked as though he had a royal flush in his hand.
You saw that, didn't you? You'll see David but only under my conditions.” Julia tried not to cry, but at least she managed not to sob.
David saw the truth. It was the primary reason he didn't want to work for his father's company. No one in his right mind wanted to work for anyone as controlling as Eladio. He left the house and got on his cycle.

Joshua Solares, Regina's fiancé, delivered the wedding invitations to her. She was thrilled with them, but explained that they would need to postpone their honeymoon for a year. It was about Miguel's competition. Josh was disappointed. Regina wanted to help Miguel and that was very important to her. It would also benefit her career. Josh was agreeable with this. She asked what the other surprise was. He showed off his new motorcycle to Regina. She was excited at the sight of it and they prepared to go out for a spin. He talked about how fast it could go. Just as they opened the gates Daniela simply had to interfere. They joked about Regina being timid about riding it and Daniela tried to mount it. Regina stopped her because she was not properly dressed for it, a most polite understatement. Regina pulled her off the back and pushed her toward the house to dress appropriately. When they returned she had her jacket and helmet but was still wearing her Madonna-style romper. Joshua strapped on his helmet and took off. He moved out like a skier on a slalom course, then did a wheelie in the middle of the road. He lost control and the cycle slid out from under him only to collide with David. Both young men lay in the road. Regina cried out.

Fabulous job on the debut, Urban!

Well, that Eladio sure is a tightly wound jerk, isn't he? He and Arturo need to go on an episode of wife swap.

So, if David is really Arturo's kid, and Eladio barely concealed, then that means Regina can't be Arturo's kid, since she and David seem destined for each other, according to their meet cute, and the James Bond-esque opening credits. Let the baby-daddy bingo begin!

I personally think that FC is overacting at this point. He's not used to playing villains and while his tone of voice is on the money his facial expressions are over the top.

As to whether David is his son, it's possible he's not although I think it's more likely that he is and Eladio is merely blowing smoke with an intent to gaslight Julia.

As to the Montenegro clan, I think that Daniela is the least likely to be Arturo's. Nina married him for his bank balance and is very likely to cheat on him, especially if he spends too much time at the office.

Julia should know who's the father of her child, shouldn't she? She didn't seem to be fighting the accusations very hard. Then again, she just seems like a nervous wreck in general, whenever that husband of hers shows up or is brought up.

Wow Urban! A fantastic recap of the premiere episode. Thanks!

This was a nice premiere episode. I'm liking it already.

I also had the feeling that David may not be Eladio's son. If that were the case, then it would explain why Eladio doesn't get along with him.

Nina is the usual golddigger and she sure knows how to get what she wants from Arturo. Speaking about Nina, already she commits a crime of fashion, by wearing that animal print dress at the bridal shop.

Don't get me started on Daniela's inappropriate wardrobe for the breakfast table and for going out.

A great cliffhanger at the end. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

We have seen many parents and children of every configuration who don't get along. If David isn't Eladio's son then he can't be Arturo's either if he is to end up with Regina unless she isn't Arturo's.

Per your comment, Vivi, I think Julia is on pins and needles all the time. She walks on eggshells around Eladio because anything can set him off. I also think that a lot of his behavior is deliberate. That's what control freaks are all about.

As my alter-ego said, Eladio simply can't share Julia with anyone including their son. Zero-sum theory works in business but human emotion isn't something that has a limited supply.

Maybe Erick and David were switched at birth. Thanks for the detailed recap!

Regina is probably Arturo's kid.

Good natured kids (Miguel, Regina) = Arturo's kids

Asshole Kids ( Erick, Daniela) = Not Arturo's kids

Nina was probably pregnant by some other man & tricked Arturo into marrying her in a quickie US ceremony.

Daniela's probably the product of some affair.

Nina is a very appropriate name.

King Eladio is going to provide lots of entertainment.

David is probably Eladio's kid

Wow, Urban, what a great start for this telenovela. Your recap was splendid.
I really want to watch this one, I hope I have the time to stop by.
Fernando Colunga better stop overacting because I find him to be the weakest link in the cast so far.
I think David IS Eladio's sont but after so many years of fighting about it, Julia doesn't have the strenght to object anymore. She is too used and abused and Eladio too big of a jealous hothead, so I don't see her as having lied all this time. We need more information on the time David was born to be sure but for now I believe that all the kids have the right fathers.
Daniela - UGHHH! !!
Loved the entrada! Finally something different!

Ive watched the first few episodes online when this came out and been dying to read the caray comments! It's not much fun watching a show without reading humorous Caray comments.

So far I like Colunga just because I've always wanted to see him as a villain. I feel like his acting is as wound up as the character he plays. It feels like Colunga doesn't want to get ugly with it, but with a role like Eladio.. You have to.

Hopefully he gets better over time.

Also really like Regina already and Favela does a great job as Nina, she really makes the money hungry villana role work.

And the opening credits are to die for!! Btw I hope it's not very gossipy to say this but I went snooping about the cast and the actress who plays Daniela is actually russian! She said so in an Hoy interview and I was stunned. Sadly theres not much about her online.

Great job Urban!

I think you guys are right that David IS actually Eladio's kid, and it's all just in his head. That makes the irony even more delicious.

BTW, this is the first time I've shifted things around. I've tried to combine scenes for clarity in the past but didn't because somehow I couldn't make it work. In this case, however, the more extensive narrative style will demand it from time to time. I'll get used to it eventually.

The short, choppy scenes in television today bother me. When I was watching TdA back in the day I couldn't help but compare it to EPdA, which had longer scenes and flowed much better. It must also feel better to the actors.

Back to this: Eladio thus far reads like a man who understands appearances vs reality. He's a master at keeping the skeletons in the closet so far only because he keeps Julia locked up like a doll. What will be interesting is when we meet her father, who has been described as being a lot like him. He is also played by an actor cast against type. Luis Bayardo has played priests and judges in the past. He is now 80.

For now I will go on the assumption that Eladio is the father of David, Arturo of Erick and Regina, but possibly not of Daniela. I am wondering whether Julia comes from older money than Eladio, who would be a wanna-be enough to know how to play the role in public. Arturo is the one who can expose him because of how Eladio reacts to him.

Arturo isn't old money, but is probably accepted because he can play the role well enough. He comes across as honest, hard-working, and one who expects this of those who work for him. Augustin is his friend. I doubt that Eladio has any of those.

Urban,
Wow! Great job on the opening episode. Such great detail and dialogue.

I already don't like Erick and Daniela. They could be Arturo's kids who really take after their mother. Regina and Miguel take after their father. But who knows at this point. I will have to get used toColunga being a villain. Not used to that.

I could be wrong, but the way I understood it, Regina was going to be in the same contest as David and that's why she wanted to postpone the honeymoon.

Thanks again Urban!
Hasta Pronto

AuntyAnn- You are correct that it is Regina and David who will be in the contest. She's and architect and he's an engineer.

Really like the opening credits/entrada because it fits the title and tone of the tn so well and is so atypical. But the only entradas I found on YouTube were typical ones with theme songs, including one that seemed legit that was called the new entrada. We'll seen if it changes, I guess. But I hope they stick with this one. I did find this one on Vimeo.

Wow Urban. Great recap and the detail was amazing!

Have to admit, I wasn't too sure about FC as the story started to unfold. He seemed a bit too wound up, almost forcing trying to be a controlling freak. I would have preferred some subtlety, but the scenes at the end with Jose Pablo were better, so maybe as we move along we will get a more layered man. And one who's suit jacket fits a bit better??

As for our other couple, the obligatory gold digger that got the good guy, but oh what a guy. Episode one and we get a shirtless Salinas. Thank you writers. But Nina is a real piece of work, though I do love the way the staff don't seem too impressed.

Lot of good eye candy in this one and I agree there is a back story to whose kid is really whose since there will be our Romeo and Juliet tale I'm sure with David and Regina.

And SG--well she's always the best. Amazing how she just takes over a scene while standing there. LOVE HER! (And no one better hurt those birds.)

Daisynjay

Wow..I am in. I have not been watching any telenovelas lately, but this one looks like a good one .Thanks so much, UA, for that verra creative recap.

I am having a sad watching mi telenovio Fernando playing a villain. He is an actor who physically inhabits his character. In Alborado, he played Don Luis with the same swagger and strut, but that character had a heart of gold ...plus beautifulb, long, flowing locks, a beard and mustache, a tailcoat ,a riding crop, a huge, black stallion and killer boots. Oh. Yeah. Sigh. Now, I have to watch him play a scenery chewing wifeabuser. I hope that he disls back the fury a bit. Slow, quiet, and steamy would feel more dangerous and deadly in this character. Ick. Oh well, I can still look at him.

That little weasel in the romper is going to be getting on my last nerve...I just know.

I vote for David being Eladio's son because Julia is a good, good girl , and Eladio is just the kind of guy who would be jealous of his own son.

I still do not understand much Spanish, but I think that I heard Nina say "my car" about six times in that scene! We can all see exactly how she gets what she wants.

Lots of familiar faces and the new ones are pretty.

Daisynjay..I think those little yellow birds are goners. Eladio is probably jelly of even those little birdies.

I am not happy that Susana is playing yet another abused wife.

Urban, this was absolutely incredible. I am in awe of your writing ability and find myself floundering to find the right superlatives.

Your careful dialog translation meant so much, especially in the initial episode. It so helped me understand the character (or lack of) of the pivotal players.

"It would have been her golden parachute out of poverty, as it was for many women like her", "He had a zero-sum mentality about everything, including human feelings" and "Apparently nobody ever taught her that displaying such obsession with class was clear proof of its lack".

This was taut and so tightly wound there scarcely seemed a moment to breathe.

I thought Colunga was perfection and have not been as excited about his performance since Pasion.

Gonzales has already tugged at my heart strings and Salinas has evoked my interest and support. The supporting players all seem well cast.

I thought the look Erick gave Regina on the stairs was lascivious and inappropriate. It made me shiver.

Eladio's cruelty and violence has repulsed me yet I am waiting with baited breath to see what happens next.

Diana

"And SG--well she's always the best. Amazing how she just takes over a scene while standing there. LOVE HER! (And no one better hurt those birds.)" Totally agree daisy!

susanlynn, I'm sorry it's hard to see your BLMOE as a villain. I keep thinking that I'd like to see my fave, Eduardo Yanez as a villain but then I say, no - I still prefer to see him in the galan roles.

Diana

Daniela is definitely her mother's daughter if Nina had grown up with money. She also represents a major pet peeve I have with novela production in general, which is when daughters of wealthy, socially insecure, or controlling parents dress like sluts. Past examples:

1. Ximena of FELS always had shorts and bare midriff tops. How is it that Gabriela (a latter-day Bernarda Alba) never got on her case about that?
2. Aimee of CS 2009 was always in super-low cleavage mode at incorrect hours of the day. Rodrigo should have put his foot down.

Nina might want to see Daniela use her looks to her own advantage, but dressing like a slut won't get her the right attention from the right men.

Urban, thank you for this stellar recap. After watching the first episode, I know this is not for me but had to let you know how much I enjoyed your exquisite rendition of the tale!

Amazing recap UA, sure helped with figuring out the characters, which usually takes me
weeks.
I find the TN way overdone so far, hopefully a little more subtlety is forthcoming.
Not pleased with my telenovio's performance, I'll blame it on the director, can't be my perfect FC. Even a bad guy is not mad 24/7.
FC did such a perfect job of being mad in Amor Real, but of course there was Carla Estrada.

How long do you think it will take for those canaries to be let out of their cage, Eladio out of meanness or Julia to set them free.

Or murdered, like Macarena's doves and Paloma's little Yorkie in ENDA. I don't think it will take more than a half dozen episodes.

Thank you, Urban, for a great recap of this first episode.

I haven't watched many TNs so I'm not familiar with any of the actors so far. Storyline is interesting, although I'm not fond of violence against women, which seems hard to get away from in these Mexican TNs.

I agree that Fernando Colunga is overdoing it as Eladio. It's probably the direction, but even a monster needs to have some charismatic qualities. As has been said, perhaps as he grows into the role, Eladio will have more dimension.

Already love Regina and liking Julia, except for the fact that she's putting up with Eladio's violence. I'd have knocked him off by now and faced the consequences.

Also liking Arturo and David.

Thanks again!

Thanks, UA. Great work setting up this TN. I enjoyed your Dominick Dunne style.

I got a kick out of Fernando Colunga as a villain. My guess is the director wanted him to dial it up high for the premiere so that an audience so accustomed to seeing him as a good guy knows without a doubt that this guy is EVIL, not just gruff. I bet he’ll tone it down as it moves on.

Eladio is a sick puppy. He wants his wife to love him like he loves her, but his controlling has killed that love. He’s definitely smart enough to do DNA testing, but probably hasn’t done it cause deep inside he couldn't bear knowing David isn’t his. But I agree David probably IS Eladio’s son.

Quite a few things were over the top, like that whole bird in a gilded cage thing with Julia. SG is perfect in this role. All these years living in the big city, and she hasn’t been able to sneak a cell phone past her husband? Yikes!

Great to see JS again. Arturo has a beautiful wife with a bodacious bod, but I felt sorry for him when she made the poor man make love to her when he needed sleep for his big meeting -- all because she wants a new car.

Wow, JS and FC are cast perfectly.
I haven't watched the entire episode yet but noticed that the facade of the first house of JS and SG was really the house from MCET, and the sección house from AV with Eduard Yañes

Do you know where I can read the overall storyline with no spoiler

Thank you for this elegant introduction to the story, Urban. I'm not totally engaged yet, but it always takes me a little time.

As soon as I heard the title I knew this had to be told in the voice of the man who loved writing about the rich and shameless.

Pity he only wrote five novels. I'm a huge fan of elegant prose. I prepped for this by reading The Two Mrs Grenvilles which is a serious page-turner. His other books are on my Amazon Wish List for later if I can't find them in a thrift shop.

I think we will see some interesting fashion felonies in this tale but not as many as in comedy series. However, they will stick out like cheap shoes at Studio 54.

Wow, UA right out with an awesome recap. Looking forward to more.

"Information can leak, however, and sometimes it falls into hands such as mine"

"Except for her auburn hair she looked like Madonna on her Like a Prayer tour"...dressed more like Madonna on her Who's That Girl tour"

Yep, FC way over the top and trying too hard. I get it he's the bad guy.

Wished someone else was playing Regina. Michelle Renaund can cry good but that's it.

Gosh, I wished I had Susana González hair

I think I'll have to go back and watch Fernando' trilogy as the gorgeous galán before watching him as a bad guy.

Oh Urban it will be so great and entertaining to have you on board again. You packed everything into this recap.

Just thinking, FC y JS could switch roles with no problem.

We already know from at least one of his films that Jorge Salinas is perfectly capable of playing a control freak jerk, but this is still a stretch for Colunga. BTW, I think Colunga's hair is too short on the sides. It makes his ears stick out and that isn't attractive when he is shot full face.

Colunga's big advantage over Salinas is that he could fit into any period of history while I have difficulty picturing Jorge in anything prior to the Regency period.

Both look good in the right style beard, but I can't picture Jorge with long hair like Colunga had in Alborada, where I think he looked his best.

However, it will be interesting to see these two actors face off against each other through this series although it probably feels weird to Jorge to be "in love" with the actress who played his psycho sister a few years ago.

To those who've watched a few shows, was I crazy or was that the dining room from Refugio? That dining room was such a central location in that one...swear if it wasn't the same, it is a close copy.

I'm actually rather interested to see what Altair's character will be up to. She doesn't seem to be playing her usual naughty girl role, which is nice to see, but she's married to the cretin eyeing up his "sister". I'm a fan of the actress, and she usually gets something meaty to play, so has me curious.

I agree that you wonder what Nina is thinking ripping Regina on her wedding gown and her "favorite" daughter walks around in her old 10 year old romper, let out in a few places. But my guess is she sees herself in Daniela. Regina aspires to an education and doesn't care about "looks" which I'm guessing mumsy just can't wrap her head around. Insecure parents will always embrace the one who is just like them.

Cue Eladio. THough his almost hatred of his son just because he won't enter the business goes beyond not getting life choices. He knows his wife loved someone else and that is betrayal, so the son favoring the mom is a betrayal too? Want this guy's back story. He has some serious issues.

I'm starting a table on the patio with a donation cup for "Save the Canaries".

Daisynjay

Eladio could almost pass for old money; he looks it. However, he betrayed himself in the restaurant scene when he showed off the wristwatch and mentioned paying a lot for it. Old money never talks about personal money, even (or perhaps especially) when dining with an equally wealthy business associate. It just isn't done.

Eladio is not capable of loving anyone, possession is his thing & you better not mess with his stuff.

I agree about FC's hair. I still see some signs of botox.

Nina is all about having attention. Look at how she was dressed last night, like Cookie from Empire's Mexican sister.

Regina doesn't dress to attract attention; Daniela does and Nina values her more for it.

Nina likely doesn't care what type men Regina & Daniela attract as long as they get a lot of attention for it.

Nina probably figures Daniela will attract a rich sap just like she attracted a rich sap (Arturo).

Arturo can't shut down Daniela for dressing like a ho when his own wife dresses like a ho.

If Augustin is right, Arturo hasn't been paying enough attention. If he had he would have observed a pattern of behavior.

If your shorts are so short you have to pull them out of your crack (as Daniela did last night getting off the motorcycle), they are TOO SHORT!

Was Augustin the very attractive man with the gray hair? Because I don't think I've seen this actor in a while (was he in La Verdad Oculta?).

Thanks UA for the awesome recap. So glad you’re back.

Just some comments before reading everyone else’s.

Eladio is one sick puppy.

Not realizing what Nina was saying to Art about the car, reading it kind of made me shudder. She’s kind of creepy. Or maybe that’s just the good recap writing.

Nina changing the maid’s name was kind of funny. The look she gave Regina when she called her by her true name was a hoot.

Did anyone else think that Miguel looked younger than Erick?

I’d like to see David working for Arturo. I hope that David’s not Art’s son. There was a moment between Reg and him. And that definitely was a meet cute.

Best part of the TN for me was when Reg marched back into the bridal shop and told her mother off.

I’m surprised David respects his mother as much as he does. I would have thought there would have been a little bit of resentment that she puts up with Eladio. Of course, it’s classic abused syndrome. He might be aware of that even so young.

Eladio is definitely isolating her. Classic abuser tactics. Didn't catch that about the cells phone. More isolation.

FC was over the top sometimes, but other times his expressions were priceless. For instance, that "neener neener" look he gave his son when his mother told him she would stay with his father.

Recognized the outside of Art’s house, but not sure where I’ve seen it. Also, recognized the staircase in Eladio’s house—again not sure where I’ve seen it. And of course, the wizard painting that was in ACT.

Glad to see Diego from ACT in this, too.

I didn’t think that Regina looked all that thrilled about the motorcycle.

I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to get into this one because I’ve been watching comedies for a year or more, but this one is has me hooked.

Did anyone else see the All Access special they had on P&P yesterday afternoon on Univision?

Nanette

Anon207, I am unsure of his name here but I believe you are referring to Marco Méndez. Yes, he was in LVO as well as one of my favorites from way back, Querida Enemiga as an abusive doctor.

I think he has incredibly mesmerizing eyes and very attractive.

I wish Fabian Robles would show up and things would be complete.

Diana

DNA test. Problem solved.

I think Eladio doesn’t get along with David is he thinks/suspects he isn’t his son and he is insanely jealous.

I admire FC for trying different things—comedy and now as a villain—but it’s almost as if he can’t quite let himself go in those roles. He holds back, maybe out of fear of making a fool of himself, or that he’ll lose fans. Don’t know. I hope he relaxes, because I think he’ll make a great villain. At first I wanted him to be charming like his hero characters with the darkness hidden—except to us, of course. But I’m kind of liking Psycho Nut FC.

Yes, it was nice seeing Marco M and his beautiful eyes again. It's been too long.

I don't think Eladio wants a DNA test. It's much more fun to torture himself and Julia with his accusations and insinuations.

Fernando Colunga LOOKS like a bad guy IMO. That's why I want him to excel in this role.

David Zepeda LOOKS like a bad guy which is why I can't buy him in good guy roles.

I'd like to see Sergio Sendel in another good guy role where he's not wasted.

Is Fabiola G supposed to be good or bad in this one? Because it's going to be interesting to see her in the 9 and 10 pm novelas.

Daisynjay: also my first thought when I saw the birds.

Susanlynn: agree with you, also, on your take with the birds. Eladio wants Julia to love only him. And yet, does everything he can to make her hate him.

Diana: I thought I caught a little bit of something something between Erick and Daniela. Then had to remind myself they were related. Eww!

Only thing that bothers me is the abuse story line. It’s one that can wear on one after awhile.

People have commented before on the blog that in the first few eps the characters overdo their parts so that the audience gets who they are and where they’re coming from. If that holds true, this one should settle soon.

UA: re: Eladio and his point of mentioning the price of things and that he doesn’t mind paying it. Very low-class.

I was at the theater a few weeks ago and a young woman (teenager, perhaps) had on shorts so short that you could see the bottom of her butt cheeks. She was with an older woman, presumably her mother. Can’t believe she let her out of the house like that.

UA..Fernando's look as Don Luis in Alborada was my favorite. It was the reason I got hooked on telenovelas. I think that his worst hairstyle was the one in Amor Real even though it was an accurate hairstyle for that era.

Really? I liked that haircut. There was a fullness to the sides and back that matched the top and he had the fashionable sideburns of that era as well.

I did not like that eway his hair was brushed forward on the sides. He played the part of Manuel well, but he certainly was a flawed galan in that one. He was vindictive and brutal ,and he had a verra nasty temper.

Awesome recap Urban and thank you for it.

It is way too early for me to sort things out but you guys seem to be doing a good job already.

Urban---I did like your comment about old money not bragging about it. You are so right.

Poor Susana Gonzalez, looks like she is in for some rough treatment. Eladio wants, demands her love but how con you love that mean guy? I was waiting for the son to bust him in the chops or give him a black eye to take to work with him.

the gringo

Wonderful recap! Thank you Urban. I look forward to more!

I was spellbound and am already waiting on baited breath for tonight's capitulo!

First off, I am in love with the into, the music and imagery of the cast/character's...just wow! That alone was enough to make me want to watch.

Once into the novela I was intrigued by all of the character's. It's too soon yet for me to dissect the acting, I think the first ep lays the groundwork for the actors to tell who their character's are. I think this was made clear, with perhaps a few over the top moments but nothing that took away from the scenes. As the writing is fleshed out, hopefully the acting will settle and the story will move seamlessly with layers of each character being skillfully peeled back.

I think the cast it top notch thus far and I'm a huge fan of the gorgeous Susana. Her hair, luminous beauty and fragility punctuate the princes in the tower being held by the evil king. I'm not feeling Jorge's flat hair, but I understand we are to see the contrast against Colunga's sever hard character. Speaking of...Colunga just gets better looking with age. I never thought he was all that as a young man, but now he's like aged vintage wine.

I think Nina probably got around quite a bit before Arturo took her out of the ditch she ran into when all of her big dreams of being a star didn't pan out. Most likely at least one of her children are not biologically his. It's obvious Nina feels that her looks and skills in the bedroom are her AmEx card to getting what she wants materialistically, but perhaps not emotionally. She is clearly empty. Daniela is obviously learning this and it's clear she is going to have a hard fall at some point in this TN.

I'm hoping Michelle can bring a bit more in this TN. I don't think she's a bad actress but I'm already getting shades of Aldonza from Sombra.

I too found Eladio leering at his supposed sister's barely covered backside very unsettling.

I think I'm most intrigued by Consuela...what is her story? How did she end up with such a self absorbed man? I'm looking forward to seeing her fleshed out.

I am eager to see who Fabiola is in this TN. I think as a younger actress she is really growing with each role she takes on.

I look forward to chatting with all of you!

UA, I like your introduction to the world of the rich & Hopeless. When I saw the 30 minute
Preview on ondemand last week, I thought it
Might be rich a mans zinger. That Eladio is a piece of work. A legend in his own mind that
One. What is he compensating for? Why is
Juliet so.....intimidated by the beast? Looks
Like he's holdin something over her head, &
Baby boy david may be it. Its like some have been misplaced. Wrong parent, wrong child,
Right parent, right child. Gonna be a hoot to
See this twist unravel. Regina will probably end up with David. When she ran out of the shop and ran into him, that was love at first sight. Its on.

Terrific recap UA. What a great start to this TN.

One thing: I'm pretty sure that Regina's fiance's name is Joshua, not Georges.

I liked Calunga's angry man acting. It starts us off beautifully despising him.

I don't love Salina's hairstyle though. I like it better a little bit shorter.

Where have I seen the actor playing David before?

David is Juan Pablo Minor, Gael in Muchacha italiana viene a casarse, cutie pie

I haven't seen that one. He's been in something else before that that I've seen.

Cathyx- Did you watch Que Pobres Tan Ricos? He played Tato, the snobby ex boyfriend of Frida.

Yes, that's it Vivi. He looks even cuter here because he's a good guy, lol.

Thank you Urban, for your great recap for our reading pleasure. So glad for the detailed conversations.

I love it, I love it!! Can't wait to see FC play this out. I also think that his hair looks better longer, but he's playing a businessman and that is de rigueur haircut. Now JS looks a little odd with his hairstyle with a little bang on each side. Otherwise the two of them look great and I am sure will make this TN a tantalizing one to watch. SG is always a gem and such a good actress. Nina is so cheap looking and it was hard to watch her in that leopard get-up, ditto Daniela. Yes, old money doesn't necessarily have good taste in possessions or fashion, but their code of not bragging, never discussing money and otherwise playing it cool and close to the vest is pretty much always their mantra.

Jose Alberto Castro did it again. A great all star cast, interesting plot twists and the elaborate entradas on all his signature telenovelas :) Forever rooting for Mi idol Jorge. Compared to his roles on LQNPA and Mi Corazon Es Tuyo, I see this as a dynamic role for him. Cynthia err. I mean Susana rocks in the role she's in as well. As for Patricio ooops... sorry I mean Alejandro Nones #thegoodson much?
