Pasión y Poder #1 Martes 11/3/15 Debut
Labels: poder
Well, that Eladio sure is a tightly wound jerk, isn't he? He and Arturo need to go on an episode of wife swap.
So, if David is really Arturo's kid, and Eladio barely concealed, then that means Regina can't be Arturo's kid, since she and David seem destined for each other, according to their meet cute, and the James Bond-esque opening credits. Let the baby-daddy bingo begin!
As to whether David is his son, it's possible he's not although I think it's more likely that he is and Eladio is merely blowing smoke with an intent to gaslight Julia.
As to the Montenegro clan, I think that Daniela is the least likely to be Arturo's. Nina married him for his bank balance and is very likely to cheat on him, especially if he spends too much time at the office.
This was a nice premiere episode. I'm liking it already.
I also had the feeling that David may not be Eladio's son. If that were the case, then it would explain why Eladio doesn't get along with him.
Nina is the usual golddigger and she sure knows how to get what she wants from Arturo. Speaking about Nina, already she commits a crime of fashion, by wearing that animal print dress at the bridal shop.
Don't get me started on Daniela's inappropriate wardrobe for the breakfast table and for going out.
A great cliffhanger at the end. Can't wait to find out what happens next.
Per your comment, Vivi, I think Julia is on pins and needles all the time. She walks on eggshells around Eladio because anything can set him off. I also think that a lot of his behavior is deliberate. That's what control freaks are all about.
As my alter-ego said, Eladio simply can't share Julia with anyone including their son. Zero-sum theory works in business but human emotion isn't something that has a limited supply.
Good natured kids (Miguel, Regina) = Arturo's kids
Asshole Kids ( Erick, Daniela) = Not Arturo's kids
Nina was probably pregnant by some other man & tricked Arturo into marrying her in a quickie US ceremony.
Daniela's probably the product of some affair.
Nina is a very appropriate name.
King Eladio is going to provide lots of entertainment.
David is probably Eladio's kid
I really want to watch this one, I hope I have the time to stop by.
Fernando Colunga better stop overacting because I find him to be the weakest link in the cast so far.
I think David IS Eladio's sont but after so many years of fighting about it, Julia doesn't have the strenght to object anymore. She is too used and abused and Eladio too big of a jealous hothead, so I don't see her as having lied all this time. We need more information on the time David was born to be sure but for now I believe that all the kids have the right fathers.
Daniela - UGHHH! !!
Loved the entrada! Finally something different!
So far I like Colunga just because I've always wanted to see him as a villain. I feel like his acting is as wound up as the character he plays. It feels like Colunga doesn't want to get ugly with it, but with a role like Eladio.. You have to.
Hopefully he gets better over time.
Also really like Regina already and Favela does a great job as Nina, she really makes the money hungry villana role work.
And the opening credits are to die for!! Btw I hope it's not very gossipy to say this but I went snooping about the cast and the actress who plays Daniela is actually russian! She said so in an Hoy interview and I was stunned. Sadly theres not much about her online.
Great job Urban!
The short, choppy scenes in television today bother me. When I was watching TdA back in the day I couldn't help but compare it to EPdA, which had longer scenes and flowed much better. It must also feel better to the actors.
Back to this: Eladio thus far reads like a man who understands appearances vs reality. He's a master at keeping the skeletons in the closet so far only because he keeps Julia locked up like a doll. What will be interesting is when we meet her father, who has been described as being a lot like him. He is also played by an actor cast against type. Luis Bayardo has played priests and judges in the past. He is now 80.
For now I will go on the assumption that Eladio is the father of David, Arturo of Erick and Regina, but possibly not of Daniela. I am wondering whether Julia comes from older money than Eladio, who would be a wanna-be enough to know how to play the role in public. Arturo is the one who can expose him because of how Eladio reacts to him.
Arturo isn't old money, but is probably accepted because he can play the role well enough. He comes across as honest, hard-working, and one who expects this of those who work for him. Augustin is his friend. I doubt that Eladio has any of those.
Wow! Great job on the opening episode. Such great detail and dialogue.
I already don't like Erick and Daniela. They could be Arturo's kids who really take after their mother. Regina and Miguel take after their father. But who knows at this point. I will have to get used toColunga being a villain. Not used to that.
I could be wrong, but the way I understood it, Regina was going to be in the same contest as David and that's why she wanted to postpone the honeymoon.
Thanks again Urban!
Hasta Pronto
Really like the opening credits/entrada because it fits the title and tone of the tn so well and is so atypical. But the only entradas I found on YouTube were typical ones with theme songs, including one that seemed legit that was called the new entrada. We'll seen if it changes, I guess. But I hope they stick with this one. I did find this one on Vimeo.
Have to admit, I wasn't too sure about FC as the story started to unfold. He seemed a bit too wound up, almost forcing trying to be a controlling freak. I would have preferred some subtlety, but the scenes at the end with Jose Pablo were better, so maybe as we move along we will get a more layered man. And one who's suit jacket fits a bit better??
As for our other couple, the obligatory gold digger that got the good guy, but oh what a guy. Episode one and we get a shirtless Salinas. Thank you writers. But Nina is a real piece of work, though I do love the way the staff don't seem too impressed.
Lot of good eye candy in this one and I agree there is a back story to whose kid is really whose since there will be our Romeo and Juliet tale I'm sure with David and Regina.
And SG--well she's always the best. Amazing how she just takes over a scene while standing there. LOVE HER! (And no one better hurt those birds.)

I am having a sad watching mi telenovio Fernando playing a villain. He is an actor who physically inhabits his character. In Alborado, he played Don Luis with the same swagger and strut, but that character had a heart of gold ...plus beautifulb, long, flowing locks, a beard and mustache, a tailcoat ,a riding crop, a huge, black stallion and killer boots. Oh. Yeah. Sigh. Now, I have to watch him play a scenery chewing wifeabuser. I hope that he disls back the fury a bit. Slow, quiet, and steamy would feel more dangerous and deadly in this character. Ick. Oh well, I can still look at him.
That little weasel in the romper is going to be getting on my last nerve...I just know.
I vote for David being Eladio's son because Julia is a good, good girl , and Eladio is just the kind of guy who would be jealous of his own son.
I still do not understand much Spanish, but I think that I heard Nina say "my car" about six times in that scene! We can all see exactly how she gets what she wants.
Daisynjay..I think those little yellow birds are goners. Eladio is probably jelly of even those little birdies.
I am not happy that Susana is playing yet another abused wife.
Your careful dialog translation meant so much, especially in the initial episode. It so helped me understand the character (or lack of) of the pivotal players.
"It would have been her golden parachute out of poverty, as it was for many women like her", "He had a zero-sum mentality about everything, including human feelings" and "Apparently nobody ever taught her that displaying such obsession with class was clear proof of its lack".
This was taut and so tightly wound there scarcely seemed a moment to breathe.
I thought Colunga was perfection and have not been as excited about his performance since Pasion.
Gonzales has already tugged at my heart strings and Salinas has evoked my interest and support. The supporting players all seem well cast.
I thought the look Erick gave Regina on the stairs was lascivious and inappropriate. It made me shiver.
Eladio's cruelty and violence has repulsed me yet I am waiting with baited breath to see what happens next.
Diana
susanlynn, I'm sorry it's hard to see your BLMOE as a villain. I keep thinking that I'd like to see my fave, Eduardo Yanez as a villain but then I say, no - I still prefer to see him in the galan roles.
Diana
1. Ximena of FELS always had shorts and bare midriff tops. How is it that Gabriela (a latter-day Bernarda Alba) never got on her case about that?
2. Aimee of CS 2009 was always in super-low cleavage mode at incorrect hours of the day. Rodrigo should have put his foot down.
Nina might want to see Daniela use her looks to her own advantage, but dressing like a slut won't get her the right attention from the right men.
weeks.
I find the TN way overdone so far, hopefully a little more subtlety is forthcoming.
Not pleased with my telenovio's performance, I'll blame it on the director, can't be my perfect FC. Even a bad guy is not mad 24/7.
FC did such a perfect job of being mad in Amor Real, but of course there was Carla Estrada.
How long do you think it will take for those canaries to be let out of their cage, Eladio out of meanness or Julia to set them free.
I haven't watched many TNs so I'm not familiar with any of the actors so far. Storyline is interesting, although I'm not fond of violence against women, which seems hard to get away from in these Mexican TNs.
I agree that Fernando Colunga is overdoing it as Eladio. It's probably the direction, but even a monster needs to have some charismatic qualities. As has been said, perhaps as he grows into the role, Eladio will have more dimension.
Already love Regina and liking Julia, except for the fact that she's putting up with Eladio's violence. I'd have knocked him off by now and faced the consequences.
Also liking Arturo and David.
Thanks again!
I got a kick out of Fernando Colunga as a villain. My guess is the director wanted him to dial it up high for the premiere so that an audience so accustomed to seeing him as a good guy knows without a doubt that this guy is EVIL, not just gruff. I bet he’ll tone it down as it moves on.
Eladio is a sick puppy. He wants his wife to love him like he loves her, but his controlling has killed that love. He’s definitely smart enough to do DNA testing, but probably hasn’t done it cause deep inside he couldn't bear knowing David isn’t his. But I agree David probably IS Eladio’s son.
Quite a few things were over the top, like that whole bird in a gilded cage thing with Julia. SG is perfect in this role. All these years living in the big city, and she hasn’t been able to sneak a cell phone past her husband? Yikes!
Great to see JS again. Arturo has a beautiful wife with a bodacious bod, but I felt sorry for him when she made the poor man make love to her when he needed sleep for his big meeting -- all because she wants a new car.
I haven't watched the entire episode yet but noticed that the facade of the first house of JS and SG was really the house from MCET, and the sección house from AV with Eduard Yañes
Do you know where I can read the overall storyline with no spoiler
Pity he only wrote five novels. I'm a huge fan of elegant prose. I prepped for this by reading The Two Mrs Grenvilles which is a serious page-turner. His other books are on my Amazon Wish List for later if I can't find them in a thrift shop.
I think we will see some interesting fashion felonies in this tale but not as many as in comedy series. However, they will stick out like cheap shoes at Studio 54.
"Information can leak, however, and sometimes it falls into hands such as mine"
"Except for her auburn hair she looked like Madonna on her Like a Prayer tour"...dressed more like Madonna on her Who's That Girl tour"
Yep, FC way over the top and trying too hard. I get it he's the bad guy.
Wished someone else was playing Regina. Michelle Renaund can cry good but that's it.
Gosh, I wished I had Susana González hair
Colunga's big advantage over Salinas is that he could fit into any period of history while I have difficulty picturing Jorge in anything prior to the Regency period.
Both look good in the right style beard, but I can't picture Jorge with long hair like Colunga had in Alborada, where I think he looked his best.
However, it will be interesting to see these two actors face off against each other through this series although it probably feels weird to Jorge to be "in love" with the actress who played his psycho sister a few years ago.
I'm actually rather interested to see what Altair's character will be up to. She doesn't seem to be playing her usual naughty girl role, which is nice to see, but she's married to the cretin eyeing up his "sister". I'm a fan of the actress, and she usually gets something meaty to play, so has me curious.
I agree that you wonder what Nina is thinking ripping Regina on her wedding gown and her "favorite" daughter walks around in her old 10 year old romper, let out in a few places. But my guess is she sees herself in Daniela. Regina aspires to an education and doesn't care about "looks" which I'm guessing mumsy just can't wrap her head around. Insecure parents will always embrace the one who is just like them.
Cue Eladio. THough his almost hatred of his son just because he won't enter the business goes beyond not getting life choices. He knows his wife loved someone else and that is betrayal, so the son favoring the mom is a betrayal too? Want this guy's back story. He has some serious issues.
I'm starting a table on the patio with a donation cup for "Save the Canaries".
Daisynjay
I agree about FC's hair. I still see some signs of botox.
Regina doesn't dress to attract attention; Daniela does and Nina values her more for it.
Nina likely doesn't care what type men Regina & Daniela attract as long as they get a lot of attention for it.
Nina probably figures Daniela will attract a rich sap just like she attracted a rich sap (Arturo).
Arturo can't shut down Daniela for dressing like a ho when his own wife dresses like a ho.
Just some comments before reading everyone else’s.
Eladio is one sick puppy.
Not realizing what Nina was saying to Art about the car, reading it kind of made me shudder. She’s kind of creepy. Or maybe that’s just the good recap writing.
Nina changing the maid’s name was kind of funny. The look she gave Regina when she called her by her true name was a hoot.
Did anyone else think that Miguel looked younger than Erick?
I’d like to see David working for Arturo. I hope that David’s not Art’s son. There was a moment between Reg and him. And that definitely was a meet cute.
Best part of the TN for me was when Reg marched back into the bridal shop and told her mother off.
I’m surprised David respects his mother as much as he does. I would have thought there would have been a little bit of resentment that she puts up with Eladio. Of course, it’s classic abused syndrome. He might be aware of that even so young.
Eladio is definitely isolating her. Classic abuser tactics. Didn't catch that about the cells phone. More isolation.
FC was over the top sometimes, but other times his expressions were priceless. For instance, that "neener neener" look he gave his son when his mother told him she would stay with his father.
Recognized the outside of Art’s house, but not sure where I’ve seen it. Also, recognized the staircase in Eladio’s house—again not sure where I’ve seen it. And of course, the wizard painting that was in ACT.
Glad to see Diego from ACT in this, too.
I didn’t think that Regina looked all that thrilled about the motorcycle.
I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to get into this one because I’ve been watching comedies for a year or more, but this one is has me hooked.
Did anyone else see the All Access special they had on P&P yesterday afternoon on Univision?
Nanette
I think he has incredibly mesmerizing eyes and very attractive.
I wish Fabian Robles would show up and things would be complete.
Diana
I think Eladio doesn’t get along with David is he thinks/suspects he isn’t his son and he is insanely jealous.
I admire FC for trying different things—comedy and now as a villain—but it’s almost as if he can’t quite let himself go in those roles. He holds back, maybe out of fear of making a fool of himself, or that he’ll lose fans. Don’t know. I hope he relaxes, because I think he’ll make a great villain. At first I wanted him to be charming like his hero characters with the darkness hidden—except to us, of course. But I’m kind of liking Psycho Nut FC.
I don't think Eladio wants a DNA test. It's much more fun to torture himself and Julia with his accusations and insinuations.
David Zepeda LOOKS like a bad guy which is why I can't buy him in good guy roles.
I'd like to see Sergio Sendel in another good guy role where he's not wasted.
Is Fabiola G supposed to be good or bad in this one? Because it's going to be interesting to see her in the 9 and 10 pm novelas.
Susanlynn: agree with you, also, on your take with the birds. Eladio wants Julia to love only him. And yet, does everything he can to make her hate him.
Diana: I thought I caught a little bit of something something between Erick and Daniela. Then had to remind myself they were related. Eww!
Only thing that bothers me is the abuse story line. It’s one that can wear on one after awhile.
People have commented before on the blog that in the first few eps the characters overdo their parts so that the audience gets who they are and where they’re coming from. If that holds true, this one should settle soon.
UA: re: Eladio and his point of mentioning the price of things and that he doesn’t mind paying it. Very low-class.
I was at the theater a few weeks ago and a young woman (teenager, perhaps) had on shorts so short that you could see the bottom of her butt cheeks. She was with an older woman, presumably her mother. Can’t believe she let her out of the house like that.
It is way too early for me to sort things out but you guys seem to be doing a good job already.
Urban---I did like your comment about old money not bragging about it. You are so right.
Poor Susana Gonzalez, looks like she is in for some rough treatment. Eladio wants, demands her love but how con you love that mean guy? I was waiting for the son to bust him in the chops or give him a black eye to take to work with him.
the gringo
I was spellbound and am already waiting on baited breath for tonight's capitulo!
First off, I am in love with the into, the music and imagery of the cast/character's...just wow! That alone was enough to make me want to watch.
Once into the novela I was intrigued by all of the character's. It's too soon yet for me to dissect the acting, I think the first ep lays the groundwork for the actors to tell who their character's are. I think this was made clear, with perhaps a few over the top moments but nothing that took away from the scenes. As the writing is fleshed out, hopefully the acting will settle and the story will move seamlessly with layers of each character being skillfully peeled back.
I think the cast it top notch thus far and I'm a huge fan of the gorgeous Susana. Her hair, luminous beauty and fragility punctuate the princes in the tower being held by the evil king. I'm not feeling Jorge's flat hair, but I understand we are to see the contrast against Colunga's sever hard character. Speaking of...Colunga just gets better looking with age. I never thought he was all that as a young man, but now he's like aged vintage wine.
I think Nina probably got around quite a bit before Arturo took her out of the ditch she ran into when all of her big dreams of being a star didn't pan out. Most likely at least one of her children are not biologically his. It's obvious Nina feels that her looks and skills in the bedroom are her AmEx card to getting what she wants materialistically, but perhaps not emotionally. She is clearly empty. Daniela is obviously learning this and it's clear she is going to have a hard fall at some point in this TN.
I'm hoping Michelle can bring a bit more in this TN. I don't think she's a bad actress but I'm already getting shades of Aldonza from Sombra.
I too found Eladio leering at his supposed sister's barely covered backside very unsettling.
I think I'm most intrigued by Consuela...what is her story? How did she end up with such a self absorbed man? I'm looking forward to seeing her fleshed out.
I am eager to see who Fabiola is in this TN. I think as a younger actress she is really growing with each role she takes on.
I look forward to chatting with all of you!
Preview on ondemand last week, I thought it
Might be rich a mans zinger. That Eladio is a piece of work. A legend in his own mind that
One. What is he compensating for? Why is
Juliet so.....intimidated by the beast? Looks
Like he's holdin something over her head, &
Baby boy david may be it. Its like some have been misplaced. Wrong parent, wrong child,
Right parent, right child. Gonna be a hoot to
See this twist unravel. Regina will probably end up with David. When she ran out of the shop and ran into him, that was love at first sight. Its on.
One thing: I'm pretty sure that Regina's fiance's name is Joshua, not Georges.
I liked Calunga's angry man acting. It starts us off beautifully despising him.
I don't love Salina's hairstyle though. I like it better a little bit shorter.
Where have I seen the actor playing David before?
I love it, I love it!! Can't wait to see FC play this out. I also think that his hair looks better longer, but he's playing a businessman and that is de rigueur haircut. Now JS looks a little odd with his hairstyle with a little bang on each side. Otherwise the two of them look great and I am sure will make this TN a tantalizing one to watch. SG is always a gem and such a good actress. Nina is so cheap looking and it was hard to watch her in that leopard get-up, ditto Daniela. Yes, old money doesn't necessarily have good taste in possessions or fashion, but their code of not bragging, never discussing money and otherwise playing it cool and close to the vest is pretty much always their mantra.
