Maleny runs into Ursula’s bedroom, ready to burst with the
Ivana-Gerry gossip.
“There’s someone else offering a baby to Ivana…Gerry!” Not
only that, but he came out of her bathroom practically naked! Ursula laughs it
off. Even if they slept in the same bed, it would be as girlfriends. Maleny isn’t
so sure. From what she saw, Gerry is all MAN—she’d do him. Ursula says that Mal
would sleep with anybody, including Isidro, and points out that this doesn’t
change the fact that Ivana is sterile. Mal points out that Gerry’s sperm is
perfectly functional. There are thousands of ways these days of making a baby.
As Gerry dresses (awwww!), Ivana explains to him what Maleny
was looking for—the ballistics report from the investigation into her father’s
death. Ivana tells Gerry how she pressured Medina into giving her the report,
using the threat of turning him in for what he did to her in Cuernavaca, and
the carrot of protecting him from Ursula. The report showed that the death of
Hector was NOT suicide, but also that Ursula wasn’t the culprit. Ivana is sure,
however, that Ursula was the mastermind (la mente maestra). She’s sure this
pack of hyenas will do whatever it takes to take MD’s baby, and she won’t
permit it! Ivana also found out that the supposed cause of Hector’s “suicide”
was financial ruin, but knowing how Ursula lies about her family’s finances,
Ivana isn’t convinced this was true. And this time, there was a death involved.
MD tells Clara the truth about Isela’s murky origins, but
feeds her the lie Isela has concocted about why she’s returned to Josefa’s lair—Jo
could have turned her away, abandoned her, or sent her to an orphanage. Clara
doesn’t get it, and thinks that even mistreatment in an orphanage would have
been better than growing up with Josefa! Esperanza tries to be diplomatic, and
says not all orphanages are hell holes. Clara agrees, after having spoken to
Leo about his volunteer work in orphanages, but still feels nothing beats a
loving home (el calor de hogar).
Clara leaves the room to take a call from Leo, which gives
Espy the chance to ask MD why the heck Isela is returning to Jo. MD doesn’t
really get it either, but Isela doesn’t want Jo to know that she (Isela) knows that
she (Jo) is not her mama. (Clear as mud, right?) In any case, they’ve got to
make sure Honoria and company know they have to pretend that no one spilled the
beans. Does this mean Isela will also return to casa Bustamante? MD thinks so.
Espy tells MD she has to tell Max. MD is unsure of doing this, because surely
Max won’t be able to keep his mouth shut. Espy doesn’t think they can just
trust Isela blindly either—she’s been twisted by all of Josefa’s lies and abuse.
MD knows, and plans to keep an eye on her.
Josefa has apparently just dragged Isela from the bus
station—the location of her staged escape with Orlando. She demands to know why
Isela was leaving. “Because I’m fed up,
Mama! I’m tired of how you treat me. It
doesn’t even seem like I’m your daughter.” Jo calls her a liar and says
she’s just a coward and doesn’t want to hurt Alma. Isela agrees, but points out
how she came to spend the holidays with Jo, and she just ruined it as usual.
Isela says she’s fed up with Jo. First, with the stupid vengeance, and then
with taking it out on Alma and her sons, when none of them had anything to do
with Marta and her bad decision. Jo thinks Alma has turned Isela against her,
and it makes her stomach turn to hear Isela calling her a second mother.
J: You have a mother, and that mother is ME!
I: That’s not true!
Orlando fulfills the promise he made to Ari and brings the
check to pay him back directly to his apartment. Ari makes snide comments about
Orly not being off somewhere with Isela. Orly knows that would have been
exactly what Ari wanted, to leave the way free to Doris. But his plan didn’t
work. He didn’t come to fight, because Ari isn’t worth it. He hands Ari the
check, and says now he can get his car back. However, he can never repay him
for what he did for him. Ari smugly tells him that he doesn’t need to
pay him back, because Doris paid him back richly that day (in bed). “You don’t
know how grateful she was for the
favor I did you that day.” Orly keeps
his cool. He doesn’t doubt that Doris asked Ari to help him, because at that
point she was already in love with HIM (Orly). Touché! “Lo que no fue en mi año, no fue
mi daño.” (What wasn’t in my time, isn’t my concern/doesn’t hurt me.) “Perhaps before me there were many or very few,
but what’s important is that she’s with ME now.” Orly leaves with his honor
firmly in place, and Ari’s pride severely dented.
Isela continues to accuse Josefa of never treating her as a
real mother would. She warns Jo never to lay a hand on her again, otherwise she
will tell Alma everything about Jo’s abuse and the revenge plan. “Do NOT challenge me/No me reta!”
(retar= to challenge, to dare, call someone’s bluff)
Max is downstairs visiting with MD. On behalf of his mother,
he asks Espy to accompany Alma and MD wedding dress shopping the next day.
Clara and Doris are also invited along. Espy leaves them alone to talk couples
stuff, including honeymoon plans. Max smooches MD and says he hopes their
honeymoon is eternal.
Orlando returns to his workshop/garage to find it unlocked
and completely cleaned out—not a single tool left, nada. He cries out in
frustration and anger.
MD and Max talk about Alma. He tells her how attentive his
father has been and how happy it’s made Alma. Claudio told Max he wants to make
up for lost time with Alma. Max has been looking up alternative treatments for
the cancer, and everything he’s found says the attitude/emotional state of the
person is the MOST important. (If MD was hesitant to tell him about the
Isela-Claudio affair before, there is no way she’s giving up the info now.)
Outside, Leo and Clara eat ice cream and he also mentions
his father’s unusual attentive behavior towards Alma-- as if he’s trying to amend
some kind of guilt. Clara gets pensive, but then jokes with Leo that now she’ll
know if he has a guilty conscious if he all of a sudden starts acting overly
attentive (cursi= corny, sickly sweet). They laugh, smooch and hug. Leo doesn’t
catch the worried look on Clara’s face.
Ivana walks Gerry out and thanks him for not letting this
turn into the second worst Christmas of her life (the first being the Christmas
her parents died). “How could I leave my
girl (mi niña) alone?” Ivana points out that it’s been a long time since he
called her that. “For others, you might
be the great executive, a tough woman, the firm hand (la mano firma), but you’ll
always be my girl.” They tell each other how much they love (querer) each
other. Gerry gives her back the keys to his apartment. “The doors to my heart
are always open to you.” Susana looks on bitterly as they hug and giggle their
way to the door.
MD gives Max a sanitized version of the Isela saga. Josefa
treated her like crap on Christmas Eve, Isela got tired of the abuse, and
decided to leave for good. Max points out that Alma offered their home, and
Isela said she was coming back. MD says Isela wasn’t thinking clearly. She ran
into Orly when she was leaving, and he offered to help, which is why he took
her to Doris’ place. Max says Doris is very noble. MD continues that the idea
was that Isela would stay with Doris until she found a place of her own, but
Orly was never going to run away with her. Max wonders if that’s the important
thing MD was discussing with Isela, but MD skirts around the answer. She
explains how Chelito did the same thing for Isela as she did for MD—convinced her
to confront her problems and not run away. “Max,
I think that if Isela wants to leave Josefa’s home, it’s a good thing. It would
be the best thing. But that doesn’t mean I think she should return to your
house. I’m saying that she should become independent.”
Susana decides to spread some holiday bitterness to Ivana.
She tells her that Gerry is as much of a user as the Santibañez, and that she
(Susana) is the one who would support her in anything—ANYTHING. Ivana decides
to call her on this promise. She explains that Gerry is donating the sperm, now
she just needs eggs with her genetics and a womb. Susana (her eggs and womb) is
the perfect candidate! Susana is rendered speechless. Ivana warns her that if
she wants to stay on the Ivana luxury goodies train, she better get on board
with the surrogate mama plan.
MD tells Espy why she didn’t tell Max the whole truth. Alma
needs to remain positive, and Claudio is behaving. Espy points out that Max
will find out sooner or later.
The Bustamante Boys return home and find Alma and Claudio
cuddled on the couch. Alma asks if they saw Isela. She’s worried about her and
wants her to come dress shopping tomorrow. Leo doesn’t think she’ll be in the
mood. “Clara just told me that Isela
found out Josefa isn’t really her mother.” Caras impactadas de Alma y
Claudio.
Orlando calls Doris to tell her about his workshop getting
robbed. He’s headed to the police station to make a report, and she wants to go
stand guard at his shop. He begs her not to—the thieves might come back. He
wants her to stay with her nana and he’ll tell her how everything went in the
morning.
Espy is confused about how Doris is coming dress shopping
with them tomorrow when she was supposed to accompany Chelito back to her
pueblo the next day. MD breaks into a big smile and explains something mysterious
about the tickets Orlando bought to Espy and Clara. We don’t get to hear what it
is.
Meanwhile, the Bustamantes try to understand this latest
news about Isela. Max is particularly confused since MD told him nothing about this.
(Get used to it, Max.) Alma starts to panic and freak out. Leo explains that
this makes it all the more strange that Isela returned to Jo’s home. Max calls MD
to get confirmation. She tells him it’s true. Yes, this was the important thing
she needed to speak to Isela about. She didn’t tell him because she didn’t want
Alma to worry (too late). MD asks how she can help.
That help takes the form of going up to Jo’s apartment to
speak to Isela on behalf of the Bustamantes. Jo tells MD off, saying Isela
doesn’t want to talk to a snitch (soplona) like her. Isela comes out and
pretends to be mad at “Lola” for ratting her and Orly out to Josefa and ruining
their escape plans. MD plays along and tells her that Alma wants to talk to
her. They pretend to tell each other off before MD leaves.
Max tells Claudio that MD didn’t want to worry Alma, but has
just passed on the message to Isela to get in touch with Alma. Meanwhile, MD
tells Espy that she could tell Max was mad at her, but didn’t want to fight
about it in front of his parents. Espy totally gets how he feels. MD tries to
justify herself. Espy reminds her that the truth will always out. If she tells
Max the truth, then she’ll have to tell him the whole truth, which will prompt
Josefa to tell Alma the truth. It’s a no win situation. Espy tells her
sometimes you just have to leave things in God’s hands.
Isela calls Alma. Alma wants to go pick her up NOW. Isela
promises to visit her to chat tomorrow morning.
The next morning, Espy scolds Clara for not minding her
business and for telling Leo about Isela’s mama-drama. Isela requested that
they tell nobody (so that it wouldn’t get back to Jo), and now Leo’s parents
know (and aren’t likely to keep mum about it). Clara apologizes, but it’s also
killing her keeping quiet about Alma’s cancer to Leo (thank goodness she doesn’t
know about the affair!). MD tries to convince her that they are keeping quiet
about all of this for the good of Alma. Clara doesn’t seem convinced.
Claudio tries to stay behind from work to chat with Isela
along with Alma. They all find his insistence strange and say that Alma and Max
will speak to Isela.
Orlando chats with the two homeboys and asks them if they
know anything about the robbery. One of them has just bought a tool with
Orlando’s name on it from one of the local hoods who specializes in stolen
goods. Orly finally gets the info out of the short one that he found out
someone specifically targeted Orly’s shop, opened it up, and led the crooks
there.
Gerry and Ivana sit in her office, drinking wine, and having
a good laugh about how Ivana punked Susana into believing she wants her to be
her surrogate. LOL! Ivana would never want that bitter woman to gestate her
child. They are interrupted by one of the lawyers. He tells Ivana that Ursula’s
strategy is to prove that MD tried to get even with Dan after the false wedding
by accusing him of rape. Ursula will try to demonstrate that MD isn’t a fit
mother, and this is how the Santibañez will get the baby.
Doris stands in front of the workshop with Nana Chelito and
calls Orly. He tells her he just found out who was behind the robbery, and he’s
going to take care of it. He’ll call her later. Doris assumes Ari was behind it
and panics that Orly is going to kill him. She rushes to Ari’s place.
Doris pounds on Ari’s door and is happy she got there before
Orly when he lets her in. She demands to know why Ari keeps making life
difficult for Orly. “Do you want him to
explode?” Ari thinks she’s speaking about the conversation he had with Orly
the day before. He tells her that Orly must not really care about her, since he
didn’t even get jealous when he told him about their roll in the hay the day he
got that car loan to pay Orly’s debt. He asks if Doris has already slept with Orly,
and she says it’s none of his business. He tells her that if Orly can’t or
doesn’t want to, then HE has no problem giving her what she wants. He suddenly grabs
her and forcefully kisses her, clearly intending to take her by force! Doris
screams and tries to fight him off.
Meanwhile, Orly is banging on the door of the person who
actually opened his shop and set the thieves on it—Josefa!
