Chapter
96: No Valor, No Discretion
Whether
in Roman times, the Renaissance, or during revolutions, the worst
social sin is cowardice. It is always necessary to present a brave
face to the world no matter what one faces and to be discreet about
it. You close ranks around your own and take no potshots at anyone
else lest they backfire. Some people just don't learn that lesson no
matter how many times anyone tries to teach them. Others love to
watch these people defy that lesson at their peril so they can enjoy
the consequences. Or write about them. That's what keeps me in
martinis, cognac, and champagne. – D.D.
Caridad
entered Eladio's office straight from the beauty salon. Despite the
lack of headband her hair was not overly different and she wore more
cosmetics than she had been accustomed to using. Despite its
discreet length, her black skirt was too widely flounced for office
wear. Her blouse was open low enough to compete with Marintia's
normal style. She was too delusional, however, to realize that this
was not going to help her.
“Do
you like how I've changed?” she asked Eladio.
He
was not pleased, but thought it to his advantage to appear so. He
leaned back in his chair and nodded slightly without changing his
expression.
“Perfect.”
“Really?”
“This
is just formal enough for reception.”
“Yes,
that's why I did this,” she said. She was clearly disappointed
with his response.
“Good
job; congratulations,” he said, as he sorted a few papers. “Now,
let's get to work. Please, take a seat.” As she started to he
handed her a book with blank pages. “Here, you'll need to take
notes. I'm going to dictate a letter for Mexico.”
“Are
you sure it doesn't matter to you that Eladio is with someone else?”
Julia's psychiatrist asked her.
“Of
course it would hurt,” she said. “It hurts a great deal because
I love him. I felt like I was able to trust him blindly. But after
that and what's happened, I think I should just leave him to his
life, and to someone else. I can do the same.”
“With
Arturo?”
“No.
No. I don't know with whom, but if Eladio is going after another
woman, then we can say he never loved me as he said. Then I have to
get a divorce.”
Regina
was in her office at GM, but having trouble concentrating on her
work. Angeles entered her office to announce that David was outside.
“Tell
him I'm not here,” she answered.
“He
says he won't move from reception until you come out.”
“Yes,
damn it.”
“What
should I tell him?”
“I'll
take care of it, thanks.” She rose from her desk and went out to
the reception area.
Humberto
was enjoying his favorite poison, a generous amount of cognac, as
Julia came home from her appointment. He put down the snifter as he
heard her call for him and replaced his breathing tube just in time
before she entered the room. He greeted her with a “Daughter,
daughter” and an embrace as the loving father he had never been.
“I
don't want you to live a life you're not accustomed to,” he said.
“But,
Papa, my life is changing completely. I have to learn to move on and
up. Alone. You promised to abide by my decisions, didn't you?”
“Yes,
forgive me,” he said, reaching out to her. “It's just that I've
always seen you as a princess who deserves everything. Everything.”
Julia
laughed. “But this princess has to work very hard. And I'll need
your help with something.”
“Of
course, of course,” he said, watching her as she picked up her
jacket. As soon as she left the room he retrieved his snifter,
removed his breathing tube, and continued to pour the amber liquid
down his throat.
Regina
went out into the company reception area. Angeles followed her
slowly and returned to her desk.
“David,
why are you here?”
“I
have something important to tell you. I'd like you to listen to me.”
“Please
leave me alone.”
“I
told my mother I wouldn't stop seeking you out. Regina, you have to
come with me because I love you. I love you very much. Nothing else
is important and –”
“I
told you no,” she said, with a pained look. “I don't want to
repeat it. Look, if things keep going like this –”
“That
won't happen, Regina. That won't happen, because you also love me.
You do. Accept that, please.”
Finally
she couldn't take any more.
“Yes,
I love you, but I want you to leave.”
“I
can't leave, I can't leave,” said David. As he was about to move
closer, Jorge approached from behind, grabbed his shoulders, and
pulled him back.
“Stop
bothering Regina!” he shouted. Then he pointed at David as he
faced him.“The next time I see you using force you will have to
deal with me.”
Regina
didn't like this turn of events.
“No,
no, no!” she shouted. It was too late. David landed a punch that
almost sent Jorge into the couch. Jorge punched back as Regina
shouted at him not to and Arturo came out of his office.
“David!
You have no business here. Leave.”
“Don't
ask me to leave, sir, because I love your daughter. I know perfectly
well that she loves me, too. Nothing you say or do matters because I
know perfectly well that we will get back together.” He turned
around to Regina. “Regina, tell your father that you love me.
Tell him.”
Regina
said nothing. She was obviously tired of being put on the spot and
Davi knew it.
“Your
daughter says nothing but I know perfectly well that she loves me.
The only thing I hope, Regina, is that you distance yourself from
your father knowing that he hurt both of us.”
Regina
hated these scenes, but managed to avoid adding to this one. She
should have been wondering whether anyone in the office was recording
this on a cell phone camera.
Caridad
interrupted Eladio's dictation to tell him she had been speaking to
Marintia, but needed to cut off the call because it happened when she
was with Gabriela. Eladio assumed it was at the foundation office
and was not pleased that Caridad had been there.
“No,
but Gaby is my son's wife and you have to expect me to be near
Franco.”
“What
I don't want is for you to be near them when you're talking to
Marintia.”
“I
was talking to Franco. I told him he had to confirm his situation.”
“His
situation,” Eladio said, sarcastically. “Franco handled this
badly from the beginning and you know it. Now how to resolve
this...”
“But
we can't leave Marintia alone. Whatever you want to think, that baby
has your blood –”
“Shut
up!” he shouted. “Shut up! We are going to help her. We, yes.
What you want to ask for is money. Well, I can see that. What I
will not permit for any reason is for Gabriela to get hurt. Do what
you can, but nobody is to know.”
He
was in no place to realize at that moment that he was demanding the
impossible.
Caridad
chided Eladio for thinking that every problem can be solved with
money. All Franco wanted was his name. Eladio again told her he
would not give it. She reminded him that Franco was committing the
same mistakes as he had. He didn't appreciate that.
“That's
enough, David. Please leave,” said Regina.
“Do
as she says. Leave, or I'll throw you out,” said Jorge.
“Jorge,
don't interfere,” said Arturo. “Don't complicate things. David,
please leave.”
“By
what right do you tell me this?” David asked. “Excuse me, but if
Regina and I are separated, it's your fault.”
“No,
son. It's only that my daughter knows that breaking up with you was
her decision. Ust respect that, as I have.”
“Regina,
Regina, do something, please,” David said to her. “Do something.
Aren't you going to say anything?”
“David,
please leave her alone,” Arturo said.
“Regina,
please say something,” David said. “Please say you still love
me, say anything.”
“Please
leave,” she finally said.
“Leave
her alone!” Jorge said. He was standing behind her.
“Don't
interfere!” David said. “Don't interfere. Stop taking
advantage. You had your chance once and now you're trying to take my
girlfriend. Don't interfere.”
“I
will do as she asks me. Until that stops, I'll defend her however I
can.”
“Regina,
please listen to me. I know you can be brave and you can ask me
anything and I'll comply. I will because I love you very much. I
love you more than my own life. The only thing I hope for, that I
want is that you feel the same. Take the chance and fight.”
“David.
David, please leave,” said Arturo. He was clearly pained at
watching this. David said no more. He picked up his jacket and
left. Regina and her father went into his office.
“I
won't allow David to come back here again,” he said.
“But
what he said is true,” Regina said. “The one precise reason I
won't go back to him is to avoid more conflict between his family and
mine.”
“Let
me decide that. It's more than what he's saying. Go back with him.
We're all adults and we can understand that.”
“Are
you so selfish that you don't get how many ways you've hurt us?”
“How?
I'm defending love, your love. I'm being practical. I'm trying to
help you be happy.”
“Don't
use me as a pretext to defend what you and Julia are doing is killing
my mother! Yes, she is very sad and I can't walk out with David to
fight for my love because the love of my life is the son of your
mistress.”
Regina
hadn't stopped to think about how her needs had always taken a
distant back seat to her mother's, Erick's, and Daniela's. Nina had
tried to manipulate her into marrying someone who would have been
unfaithful to her on their wedding day. That manipulation hadn't
been effective, but the latest one had been.
Daniela
stopped by Franco's office with the latest photos from the shoot to
ask his opinion. This was, however, only a pretext for a seduction
attempt which failed when Gabriela walked in demanding an
explanation. Franco tried to tell her he was reviewing the photos,
but Gabriela was no fool, at least for the moment. Franco looked
afraid for that moment.
Daniela
gathered up the photos from the desk and the folder next to them and
excused herself. “Now that we're done with work, he's all yours,”
she said to Gabriela. As she walked out Franco closed the door
behind her.
“Gaby,
you don't have to be so jealous,” he said. “First with Marintia,
now with Daniela.” He held up his left hand. “I married you. I
love you. Don't you understand me?”
“And
my uncle also married my aunt. He fooled around with your mother and
that slut Monserrat. Marriage is no guarantee of fidelity.”
“Perfect,”
he said as he sat down. “So you think I'm like my father.”
“No.
If you were I wouldn't have married you because if anyone knows how
much my aunt suffers, it's me.”
Caridad
opened the door silently and Gabriela saw her. There was a very
awkward silence.
Humberto
visited Eladio in his office to tell him that Julia was very sad.
She was feeling deceived. When Humberto brought up the company
shares that Eladio had offered David, Eladio explained that David
didn't want to accept them.
“If
you want, I can talk to him to get him to think better of it,”
Humberto offered. “I don't want my daughter or David to be left
unprotected. And what's more, she doesn't want to accept anything
from you.”
“How
would you help me?” asked Eladio. “What can I do?”
“I
don't know. If you want, I can help you.”
He
smiled back at Eladio, who nodded as he kept his usual eagle eye on
his father-in-law.
“When
did it occur to you to help me? What are you going to suggest?”
“The
shares you were going to give to my grandson don't have to precisely
be in his name --”
“Why
didn't this occur to me? Of course, what a good idea!” He reached
for Humberto's hand. He then quickly pulled on it so Humberto was
flush against the desk before standing up to lean closer in and grab
Humbert's elbow with his other hand. “You must think I'm a fool,
Humberto, to not know you'd use those shares to gamble. What were
you thinking? I will not permit this.” He threw Humberto's hand
back as though it hadn't been washed in days. “It wasn't enough
that I've done everything for you so far but now I won't help you
anymore. What more do you want? You lived in my house in luxury,
right? There were your bills, your medical bills, your nurse's
salary. I took care of it all. What more do you want?”
“Understand
me. Julia doesn't want anything to do with you. Least of all,
maintaining me. I have no guarantee she can continue to pay my
bills.”
“That
is your problem. Your bills, right? Well, don't worry. I could see
Julia helping you, and so would David. But I'm not so sure you'd
share with them.”
“I
just want to make sure that things will go well. But now I'll talk
to Julia.”
“What
are you referring to?”
“I'd
prefer you just to stop deceiving everyone. It shouldn't escape you
that this morning Julia received a note from Arturo.”
“I've
just hit the end of my patience,” Eladio said through clenched
teeth. “And you know what happens when I lose my patience?” He
grabbed the wheelchair and turned it toward the exit. “You know
what will happen? I will not control myself. Let's go! Get out and
don't come back to my office. Get out!” He shoved the motorized
wheelchair out and slammed the door behind Humberto. He returned to
his desk, tight as an overwound watch.
That
evening at GM, Augustin advised Arturo that Ruedas was investigating
what holdings Arturo had that weren't previously known to Nina.
Arturo was not surprised at their adversary's persistence. Angeles
came in to inform him he had a visitor. Humberto rolled in just as
she left the office. Augustin left without acknowledging him.
“Excuse
me for bothering you,” Humberto began. “But I had to hurry over.
I'm very worried about Julia. You know her pride is so great she
doesn't want to accept anything from Eladio.”
“Yes;
well done.”
“Well,
as you would imagine, I'm worried about how we're going to go on with
all the bills.”
“Of
course,” said Arturo. “I see. Although I sense that you're more
worried about yourself than about her. Don't lie to me.”
Humberto
was caught off-guard for a moment.
“Well,
I do worry about my bills but her life would be easier if she could
count on your help.”
Arturo
smiled, knowingly.
“My
help has always available to Julia. Along with my love. But that
can't go on if she doesn't want to be with me.”
“Well,
because she's so hurt because of that wretch, Eladio. But I think
this will pass.”
“The
day that Julia asks, I will be there for whatever she needs.”
“You
know she'll never ask for anything. She is too proud.”
“Don't
worry. Even though Julia doesn't know, I'll be there for her. If
she needs anything, if she wants anything, I will give it to her.”
“Of
course. Thanks for having so much faith. Now, how must we do this?”
Arturo
looked up and raised an eyebrow as he smiled. He looked Humberto
directly in the eye.
Regina
saw Nina in the study looking over the latest documents from her
lawyer. She begged her not to turn the divorce into a bloody war.
Nina showed the documents to Regina that said Arturo was putting
holdings in other people's names. “I didn't want a divorce, but
your father insists on leaving me. There's no going back, so I have
to defend myself.”
“I
understand, Mother, but think about how difficult this is for us.”
“I
know, but there is no escape for me.”
Regina
sighed as Erick came in. She left without greeting him. Nina looked
at him.
“What's
wrong?” she asked.
“Consuelo
wouldn't let me in or see my son. She gave me the excuse that he had
a cold and I couldn't see him.”
“You
can't permit this. You are the baby's father.”
“Don't
worry, Mama. Things are not staying this way.”
Caridad
dined at Franco and Gabriela's house that evening. She praised the
food and Gabriela went to the kitchen to cut her some of the cake to
take home. While Franco tried to appeal to what he thought was
normal female vanity on her part, she told him she had discussed his
child with Eladio. While Franco didn't lose his temper he wasn't
happy about this. He told her he didn't want her to get involved
because everything would be all over if Gabriela ever found out.
Neither of them saw Justino, who came up from the basement through
the door under the staircase. He paused as Franco said that Gabriela
would never accept a child had with Marintia. Caridad said she was
interested in protecting her grandson. Justino paused for a second,
clearing his throat as he came into their view. He said he was
finished and would leave. As he went out the door Franco stared
after him, realizing he could have overheard or been eavesdropping.
Gabriela came back from the kitchen with a plastic container she
handed to Caridad.
Eladio
let himself into Julia's house and she found him in the parlour.
“What
excuse do you have now?” she asked.
“No
excuse. I just came to let you know that Nina intends to make a
major mark on the foundation.”
“I
have no doubt. The only thing that woman wants to do is to vex me,
just as when she got close to you.”
“Does
that mean you're jealous at her coming to see me?”
“No;
it's not jealousy. It's that we're married and I don't like being a
deceived woman. That's all. Because I know that if she knows about
you and Franco she will tell the whole world.”
“Obviously.
Is that what you think?”
“Did
you tell her, too? How much do you trust her? You know how this
would go. Now leave, please.” She pointed toward the door. He
did not move, so she left the room in frustration.
Consuelo
was slicing fruit when Erick rang her doorbell. As usual, he had
come unannounced. She did not allow him to see the baby. He gave
her a feigned apology at making her feel that his security guards
were meant to spy on her. He dismissed the bald man in her presence
and paid him a wad of cash. The man excused himself and extended his
hand to Consuelo. She did not take it. Erick told him discreetly to
leave. He then apologized to Consuelo, told her he missed her, and
departed. She locked the door and put the chain on it.
Justino
took Clara to dinner at Regina and Consuelo's favorite trendy
restaurant to celebrate his new job. He also proposed marriage to
her. She accepted. He took a pink tulip out of the vase and
promised her to be the best husband in the world to her.
Julia
was reviewing some files in the study with Itza and handed back a
file on a house she was not going to handle.
“Is
something wrong? Are you alright?”
“No,
I'm not alright,” Julia told her. “Because I think my husband is
pursuing another woman.”
“Not
that I want to torment you any more, but really, he's very handsome,
personable, rich. Any woman would find that combination attractive.”
At
the same time, Daniela and her simian brother were double-dating at
the hottest club in town. I have it on good authority that Erick's
date was more attractive than he deserved, with long dark hair and
better taste in clothes than Monserrat's.
“When
Daniela told me you'd be in this club I couldn't believe her,” he
said to Ashmore.
“Well,
youth isn't just measured in years, but in attitude,” he replied.
“Well,
attitude has to compensate for other functions,” said Erick's date.
This indiscretion amused Daniela, who laughed as heartily as she
ever would.
“You
have to ask her,” Ashmore replied.
“Too
much information,” said Erick. They all drank to that. It was
good to know that even Erick Montenegro had his limits.
They
mutually decided to leave because tomorrow was a workday. They all
toasted again, in time to be observed by Franco, who arrived alone.
Daniela was the only one who saw him and she excused herself from the
table to follow him to an area where they wouldn't be seen. He led
her by the hand.
“How
good it is that I found you,” he said. “I've come to talk to
you. Now I have the perfect plan for you to end up with David.”
“You
do? Well, I don't believe you.”
“Remember
the day I presented you to my father? There was such a fight,
remember?”
“Yes,
because of Regina.” She almost rolled her eyes.
“Yes.
So what you have to do is demonstrate to David that you will defend
your love for him. Not like Regina. She's not doing it. She's not
defending it.”
“Well,
yes, but there's one small detail. He loves her.”
“Well,
you're an expert about men, aren't you? Show it.”
“Okay.
But what do you get out of this?”
“You
know my story, gorgeous. It will benefit you; don't worry.”
He
kissed her cheek and left through the nearest exit.
David
was home alone when Caridad paid a call.
“I
want to talk to you, David.”
“What
do you want to tell me?”
“Franco
and you have the same blood –”
“No,
no, no, excuse me but we share blood only thanks to my father.”
“I
know. But since you're half-brothers, you don't have to treat each
other badly –”
“Caridad,
if my father had him first, I wouldn't have a problem. For him to
have had two sons by two different women at the same time isn't good.
There was nothing good about this. Excuse me, Caridad, but the one
who provoked this was you. If you have nothing else to talk about, I
don't want to show any disrespect. The only thing I can say now is
to ask you politely to leave.”
“I
understand.”
She
left, disappointed.
Consuelo
was incredulous that Regina wasn't fighting to keep David.
“If
your parents love each other, show that it doesn't matter. You have
do what's necessary to find a way to be happy with him.”
“No.
I understand your point, but since I'm so annoyed at my father's
deception... He was my hero, the best. My father!”
“But
it's not like that. You have to count on yourself to reach happiness
with him.”
“No,
you're not understanding this. You should know better than anyone
that my father is leaving my mother for Julia. I can't stay with
David. She's his mother! That would be betraying my mother, my
family.”
Consuelo
had no reply. She may have thought that this was not the time to
remind Regina of her mother's shortcomings.
The
following day there was a charity card game at the foundation. All
the tables were occupied. Waiters were serving cocktails as the
women played baccarat. Fanny told Nina to calm down. She should
have also told her not to wear fur to the event. She was the only
woman doing so and it looked so tasteless.
Gabriela
was overseeing the event and all was going well. Then Julia arrived.
She greeted a few people as she walked in until she noticed Nina
facing her direction. Suddenly everyone fell silent. Nina had been
waiting for that.
“What
happened to all of you?” Julia asked.
“It's
that nobody can believe what's happened to you,” said Nina,
feigning innocence.
“What
are you talking about?”
“Ay,
Julia, that your husband was unfaithful and that he had a son with
that woman.”
“You
can think what you want to, Nina,” she said.
“You
don't have to get upset,” said Fanny. “We know what's been going
on. You know we never thought you'd be such a fool to put up with
anything like that.” She started to say more, but Nina stopped
her.
“Well,
if Eladio is capable of something like this, something must be
lacking at home.” She gloated.
“Nina,
I will not allow you to talk this way about my marriage.”
“If
you could, you'd take Arturo away from Nina,” said another woman.
“Hey,
we know Eladio is pretty smart,” said Fanny. “Getting Franco
into the family and marrying him to Gabriela.”
“Eladio
is very capable,” said Nina.
“Yes,
he doesn't like fools,” said the other woman.
“Enough!
Nina –”
“What
I've been saying is true,” said Nina, as she stood. “I've only
been repeating what others have said. There have been many rumors.
And it's all your fault.”
“Many
rumors? I know perfectly well that Eladio was the one who told you.”
“Well,
and I won't deny it. Yes. Because ultimately Eladio and I will be
very close.”
“Nina,
I will not permit that you come to an event at my foundation to
insult me.”
“Aunt,
this isn't the moment,” Gabriela tried to prevent a verbal
bloodbath. “This is an event for the children.”
“Well,
as much as you'd like to hide the truth, Julia, it always comes to
light.” She looked back at her audience and suggested to Fanny
that they leave.
“Ladies,
please, let's continue with the event,” said Gabriela. “Take
your seats, please.” The ladies went back to their tables. “Aunt,
please calm down.”
“How
am I going to? Do you know what that woman just did? And it's all
Eladio's fault. All. I hope Franco is happy because now the whole
world knows he's a Gómez-Luna.”
“Aunt,
you have to know that Franco had nothing to do with keeping this
hidden.”
“But,
look, whose side are you on? Tell me.”
“I'm
on my husband's side, Aunt.”
She
walked away. Julia was not satisfied, but at least the event
continued without further incident.
Daniela
was in the hot seat in Eladio's office. He wanted to know about her
relationship with Peter Ashmore.
“No.
I'm not involved with Ashmore,” she said.
“Don't
lie to me. I know you've been spending a lot of time together.”
“We
get along well. And last night we were celebrating with my brother
because he's going to be my nephew's godfather. But nothing else.
Above all, sir, I think this is my personal matter and I didn't think
you'd get into personal questions or feelings. Yes?”
“Daniela,
I'm telling you this because I want you to be careful. Besides,
Ashmore is one of your father's clients. Be careful. Believe me, in
the long term this will be a problem. As you say, this is your
business, but I just wanted to tell you that.”
“Don't
worry, and thanks.”
“Good.
On the other hand, you will need to concentrate because I have plans
for a photo shoot on the beach.”
“On
the beach? Really?” She became excited, but one could hardly
imagine why.
“What
I want is for you to concentrate even though this is what you want
most.”
“Yes,
sir.”
Later
Daniela went into Regina's office, telling her she was worried about
her. She wore the same red lace suit as before in Eladio's office,
as if to demonstrate her self-proclaimed superiority over her sister.
“I
heard you fought with David again.”
“Who
told you?”
“That's
not important but seriously you're going to regret this.”
“I
have no reason to. And I'm not getting back with the son of dad's
mistress.”
“I
can't believe you're giving up so easily. Well, that's you. And I
hope you don't regret it.”
“Why
are you suddenly so interested in me?”
“You
know, Regina, I'm being serious with you. Every touch, every
expression of affection you take badly. I better go. Bye.”
She
walked out the door. She loved gaslighting her older sister.
David
strode into Eladio's office and asked whether he had sent Caridad to
his apartment.
“No.
What did she want?”
“She
wants me to get closer to Franco because he's my brother. The only
thing I want is to distance myself from him.”
“Look,
I didn't send her.”
“Well,
then tell her. Your mistress or ex-mistress, I don't care. Tell her
not to bother me again.”
“Hey!”
Eladio shouted as he stood. “Show some respect. I'm your father.
Watch what you say and don't try to judge me.”
While
Eladio had no problem seeing his errors from an intellectual
perspective, he still could not allow himself to hear this from the
people he had most grievously harmed.
Clara
gave Consuelo her good news. She wanted Consuelo to be present for
her wedding. Consuelo was very happy for her. She then told her
about what had happened with Erick the evening before. Clara thought
this was strange and told her friend to be very careful.
Caridad
spoke with Marintia, who told her that the baby survived as was out
of danger. She was still worried about paying the bills. Caridad
told her that Eladio would take care of everything. When she ended
the call she ran into Eladio's office to tell him that the baby was
alright only to see him return to his Mr Hyde self.
“You
don't think, do you? Explain to me what the hell you were thinking
when you went to see my son, David?”
“I'll
explain. I just want him to understand Franco. They're brothers and
I just want to help them get along.”
“No,
Caridad. That was wrong. You don't interfere with my son!”
“My
intentions were good.”
“Your
intentions don't matter to me. And I don't believe you. If you do
this again, if you try my patience again, you will regret it.
Arturo
and Augustin sat in the corner office of GM where they discussed the
shares distribution. Arturo looked at the papers.
“Good.
I'll need something else. Some shares in Don Humberto's name.”
“That's
crazy. That fool will gamble it all away. You know him.”
“Yes,
yes, yes.” He closed the folder. “I have it all planned. Give
him the shares of that pharmacy we bought a few years ago.”
“That
business has done nothing since we bought it. It's practically
bankrupt.” Then he understood and began to laugh. “Those shares
are worth almost nothing.”
“Yes.
That's why.”
Humberto

what's wrong?” Humberto put his magazine down. She dropped her
coat and purse on a chair and knelt to embrace him.
“Papa,
there was a problem at the foundation. Now the whole world knows
that Franco is Eladio's son.”
“How
did they find out?”
“Nina.
She told them all. They all looked at me either with pity or were
laughing at me or thinking I'm not woman enough for Eladio so he's
looking for someone else. Do you know how bad I feel?”
“Of
course. Calm down, daughter. Calm down. You have to think
positive.”
“What
could be positive about this?”
“In
everyone's eyes you are Eladio's victim. Nobody will look badly on
what consequences you can impose, including getting back with
Arturo.”
Nina
was still riding high when she got home.
“I
haven't enjoyed a benefit in such a long time,” she said.
“Julia
never expected anything like this,” said Fanny.
“This
and more. She's a hypocrite. Really, she's a slut who messes with
married men.”
“She
is, and good that you told her to her face,” said Fanny. There was
a discordant note in her tone, as though she were enjoying a joke at
someone else's expense. “Besides, you had to show that nobody can
mess with you.”
“I've
done that from the beginning. I'm going to pay her back in kind.
I'm going to make her regret for the rest of her life that she ever
messed with me.”
Fanny
grinned at her, as though she were cheering her on. The reality was
that she knew she could never trust Nina with her own secrets from
that day forward.
Gabriela
went to Franco's office. He had missed her that morning because she
had left the house before he got out of bed. She asked him where he
was the night before.
“I
was taking care of some things for work,” he said. He reached
toward her but she moved out of range.
“Yes,
of course,” she said, not believing him. They almost argued over
this until he picked up a file and said he needed to get to a
meeting. He headed for the door.
“I
also want to tell you that the whole world knows you're Eladio's
son.”
He
stopped, turned around, and closed the office door.
“What?”
“Nina
found out and told all the ladies who came to the foundation's
event.”
“What
happened?”
“They
laughed at my aunt, but the ultimate victim is you. My uncle is the
villain, and my aunt – ” She couldn't think anymore.
“You'll
see,” he winked at her and took her hand. “This will work in our
favor.”
He
grinned as he walked out. She stared at him as though she had never
seen him before.
Daniela
stopped David in the corridor and saw that all was not well.
“Can
I help you with anything?”
“No.
I don't think so. It's family matters, and Jorge's interference.”
“Well,
you can imagine I'm going through something difficult with my
parents' separation. So I understand you more than you think. If
you want to let your hair down sometime I'll be there for you. I
need that, too.”
“I'm
very grateful, Daniela, but if I'm close to you I'm close to your
family and that complicates things.”
“Well,
think of it as seeing a friend or a colleague if you want, but not as
a Montenegro.”
“Thanks.
Excuse me.”
Daniela
sighed. She wasn't sure it worked.
Julia
went into Eladio's office, telling him that the disclosure of his
indiscretion had ruined her life. She explained that Nina had made
fun of her in front of the other women at the foundation because of
his infidelity.
“I'm
sorry, Julia.”
“You're
sorry?”
“Yes.”
“It's
Nina's fault.”
“Calm
down. Sooner or later everyone would have known, especially because
our marriage is in crisis.”
“If
we're in crisis, it's your fault.”
“Yes,
I know, but why don't we try to work at it? Why don't we go to the
couples' therapist?”
“No.
That would be for a couple who should stay together. Not in our
case because I'm not interested is staying with you.”
She
walked out.
“Julia
–”
She
ignored him. He took a deep breath and leaned against his desk.

He is now far less likely to trust her and more likely to try to screw her out of anything she might get out of the divorce.
His shrink might suggest that he could have done this as an expression of a subconscious wish to get it over with because it's one of the biggest things hanging over his head.
There are still other secrets of Eladio's that we don't know about, so here's some food for thought:
Neither Arturo nor Eladio are 60 yet; I'm guessing both are meant to be about 50 (FC's 50th birthday is tomorrow). Arturo's mansion was inherited while Eladio had his built as a wedding gift to Julia. That could not have been a very long time after his dismissal from GM and a corporation of this kind isn't built in a day, a year, or even five years. If Eladio didn't embezzle a serious sum of money from GM or kill Mr Schmidt to get his money, how else could he have afforded the mansion and pay off Humberto's gambling debts?

Kirbo, it was actually much harder to keep track of all the lies in YNCELH because they were mostly verbal inventions in the early weeks. The same person would lie in 6 different ways to 6 different people about the same thing and it was usually about something we didn't witness. I was getting headaches over that until it slowed down a bit in favor of more action that we could remember correctly.
From beginning to end it was marvelous, UA. You deserve the cognac, martini and champagne.

She can put aside money for Humberto's medical bills (if she wants to), give David money or put it in trust for him, and donate the rest to charity if she chooses.

Leticia, I keep hoping Daniela, under Eladio's tutelage, will straighten up and fly right. It's beginning to seem she is the stable sister and I too wouldn't mind a David and Daniela pairing, Regina deserves it. Regina is too much like David's mother, a walking, talking yoyo.

I enjoyed Hummy last night. First, he goes to Eladio to see what he can get out of him. Then he goes to Arturo to see what he can get when he gets nada from Eladio. Oh, will Hummy be surprised when he finds out that the shares he will revive from Arturo are worth nothing. It should be good when he finds out.
I'm sure Eladio will also find that amusing if he hasn't lost it altogether by then. He's probably been itching to stick it to the old man recently.

UA, respectfullt I wanted to point out that on your 9:05 comment you did not consider that Eladio built Julia her mansion with the money he inherited from Schmidt, who just might have truly died of natural causes and not at Eladios's hand. At this point it has not been revealed. So we cant ignore that that possibility.

Thanks so much , UA, for another excellent recap.I was watching "The Voice" (so good ) , so I only surfed into PyP during the commercials. I did catch Justino 'S proposal. He is a nice guy but...not a good kisser. I also saw the mean girls attacking Julia, who continues to annoy me with her inaction. Stay or go. If you are crazy in love with Eladio , forgive him and get on with your life, and if you cannot forgive him, leave him! I am a pretty pragmatic kind of person. It is what it is. I like this quote, " Anything he could not defeat, outwit, or alter, he simply accepted ..rather like a sponge and it's embedded shell." I am tired and frustrated by these characters just going around and around and around....

Oops; I just realized that Justino overheard about Franco's son, not Franco himself. I should never post before caffeine.
As to whether he will spill, let's see. It would take at least two episodes for him to talk to Clara who will talk to Consuelo, who might tell Regina, who will ultimately tell David. However, if he talks to Caridad first he will be silenced temporarily, which will give Eladio time to think about how to handle his part of the bargain with Caridad.
Since the cat is out of the bag about Eladio being Franco's sperm donor I don't think Eladio has any choice now other than to acknowledge him. If this were taking place prior to 1995 he could get away with denials, but DNA trumps everything now in these situations. Franco is also in the same boat. The issue now is whether Eladio could make his support of Marintia and the baby conditional on her silence about the baby's origin and her promise never to return to Mexico.

However, if he talks to Caridad first he will be silenced temporarily, which will give Eladio time to think about how to handle his part of the bargain with Caridad.
Since the cat is out of the bag about Eladio being Franco's sperm donor I don't think Eladio has any choice now other than to acknowledge him. If this were taking place prior to 1995 he could get away with denials, but DNA trumps everything now in these situations. Franco is also in the same boat. The issue now is whether Eladio could make his support of Marintia and the baby conditional on her silence about the baby's origin and her promise never to return to Mexico.

Anita, one of the knick knacks that Eladio has in his office behind his desk is a Mickey Mouse figurine. It caught my eye the other night and since then I have also been trying to identify the rest of them.

The strangest part is that Arturo is filing in the US, maybe he can get away with misconduct in Mexico like Erik’s murder grand jury, or what ever that was, but he is unlikely to hide vast holding with the NYC lawyers they’ll need with this case. Arturo has been scurrying along on the low road for years, I’m hoping he’ll move toward the light, but doubt he can, he has been operating underhandedly too long, he has become una rata sin alma.

As far as I can tell the only reason Arturo is filing in the US is so the production crew gets to shoot some cool NYC locations. From a story perspective, the only thing that could work to his advantage might be whether the location of his financial holdings makes any difference to the timing of their disposition.
Back during YNCELH the issue of life insurance payout came up. I finally found a source that said that a policy can pay out in the case of suicide if that takes place two (or three) years after the policy takes effect. Even in that situation, the payout doesn't happen right off the bat because the insurance company would do a thorough investigation.
It could be possible that hiding assets might have a similar deadline if, for example, it's done six months or a year before filing the divorce petition. I'm sure if there are such laws they also vary by state within the US and in Mexico.

gringo- While Gaby hasn't actually seen the REAL bad boy Franco, she has seen some glimpse of it, but has failed to see the red flags. For example, when Erick was in a coma, Franco said out loud that if Erick died, then he and Eladio could bring down GM, since Arturo would be left devastated. Julia freaked out at the comment. Eladio punched Franco out for saying such a thing. But Gaby who was present as well just stood there beside him and was silent. She even kissed him goodbye before he left.

I have noticed that too. It made me think back to the discussion about how Eladio ties his tie and made me think that maybe he uses that to practice the art of how to tie a tie. LOL

One thing I can't abide is rudeness and bad manners. Last night Nina was boorish and extremely unseemly. She should be ashamed of herself for the way she behaved toward Julia. The acceptable thing would have been for her to quietly stand up and gracefully leave. Up until then she occupied the high ground. She's still the harmed party but her persona is now tarnished. Please, a little dignity pretty lady.
As for Arturo signing over worthless pharmaceutical shares to Humberto, I don't see what he thinks that he accomplishes by this, maybe one of you who is more astute in business matters can explain this to me, but I do see a potential for rich irony... Say what if this company stumbles upon a breakthrough treatment for restless leg syndrome or menopausal hot flashes, shazam, the stock soars and suddenly our favorite senior citizen is impossibly rich and can buy his own racetrack as well as a casino. Then the Humberto Table will open up and there'll be drinks for everyone.

UA, what matters is the signed Financial Affidavit document that Arturo submits in court, in this case in "some cool NYC location..." Perhaps Agustín and Arturo are playing a fun game of Mexican Monopoly, but the implications of every scene dealing with this part of the divorce is that Arturo has hidden assets from Nina.....which is a very dangerous legal scenario. It is no different that anyone hiding assets from investors or business partners, there are laws against it. I think it would be better to undervalue assets, there could be different interpretations of valuations, but moving things around is a big red flag.

I think Arturo is using this to teach Humberto a lesson, which is that he will not be gullible enough to hand over money that Humberto can gamble away. It could also be a way to punish Humberto for his abuse of the women in his life. Eladio has refused to be financially responsible for Humberto now, so this could put Humberto into Shady Pines Lite. This could backfire in any of several ways, but when I think of the fact that Humberto's abuse is what is ultimately responsible for Julia's self-esteem issues we can't fault Arturo for wanting to let him know that karma is a bitch.
As for Nina, remember that beauty does not equal goodness and is often (incorrectly) equated with a lack of intelligence in women. Here she tipped her hand and forgot that Old Money and the outsiders who are accepted need to be both polite and discreet.
While we have no real information about Fanny, I am guessing that she is a Nina past her prime. She seems to be the only woman who bothers much with Nina so I doubt she is Old Money herself.

I agree and I'll add that I'm disappointed that she is spinning her wheels in a truly unattractive attempt to take Erik, Jr. from Consuelo, who is an adoring and attentive mom. My only (weak) defense is that I seen many of my kind, loving friends turn into the "German Wehrmacht" during their divorce proceedings, unfortunately....divorce is war.

Please don't think for a minute that I'm abandoning Nina, I'm simply calling a ♤ a ♤. Like you, I'm also disappointed in her support of Erick in his effort to take Infanterick away from Coni. It is important to note, however, that she is a woman scorned and you know what they say about those folks.
